NOTES:

$ Methodology/FAQs/Definitions:  The foundation behind these player values is our Point Share methodology.  WTF is a Point Share you ask?  It represents the estimated difference in an average team’s points if they were to substitute a given player for the average drafted player at his position (same in concept as Alex Patton’s Standings Gain Points).  So if a player has a 1.0 for Runs, he would, on average, increase a team’s standing points in Runs by 1 point.  Thus, a completely average player is worth zero Point Shares.  These Point Shares are converted to dollars at the total player level as well as for each category.  The sum of a player’s category $ plus $1 (for replacement level) equals their total auction $ value.  Converting Point Shares into $ is covered in the FAQs that I had put together as part of the Historical Player Rater.

Filtering Results:  You can filter multiple fields at the same time.  The text fields below the column headers enable several methods for filtering the data.  Here are some examples:

Function Symbol Example Explanation
ANY MATCH ‘B’ in Pos Typing B in Pos will filter to any player with 1B, 2B, or 3B eligibility.  Type in more details to filter further – e.g., “1B’, “1B, 3B”, etc.
OR | Ruth|Aaron in ‘Name’ All players with Ruth or Aaron in their name
NOT ! !FM in ‘Halls’ All players who are not in both the Hall of Fame and the Hall of Merit
NOR ! | !F|M in ‘Halls’ All players who are not in the Hall of Fame NOR the Hall of Merit.  Just use the ! once.
GREATER THAN > >30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than 30
LESS THAN < <30 in $ All players whose $ is less than 30
GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO >= >=30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than or equal to 30
LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO <= <=30 in $ All players whose $ is less than or equal to 30

Roster:  For ‘ESPN Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P.  For ‘Yahoo Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P.  For AL/NL-only leagues, this is 2C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P.

Pos / MVPos:  ‘Pos’ includes every position the player is eligible.  ‘MVPos’ is the position that was used for their Point Share rankings and is the position where the player is judged most valuable. The order of most valuable to least valuable for positions is: C, SS, 2B, 3B, OF, 1B, DH.  Note that the position eligibility rules for ESPN and AL/NL only formats is 20 games previous season / 10 games current season while Yahoo format is 10 games previous season / 5 games current season.

Steamer Projections – Created in 2008 and maintained and operated by Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom. One of the top (if not the top) performing projection systems based on our 2012 baseball projections test. Playing time estimates as well as Saves, Holds, and Quality Starts are provided by Rudy Gamble of Razzball.

Hitter/Pitcher Split In Auction Values  – Pre-season $ values are based on a 67/33 hitting/pitching split to better mirror draft behavior (vs. a 59/41 mix for a league with 13 hitters and 9 pitchers).   The 2013 Razzball Commenter Leagues had a median hit/pitch split of 66.5/34.5.  (The $ for In-season and Rest of Season projections mirror the proportion of hitters and pitchers in the league – so 59/41 in the standard ESPN format)

Position Eligibility – 20 Games in last season for ESPN and ‘2 Catcher’ formats.   5 Games for Yahoo.

ESPN Roster Format – C/1B/2B/SS/3B/CI/MI/5 OF/UTIL/9 P.

Yahoo! Roster Format – C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P.

Rudy, did you purposefully make this go to 1030 so that you could include Marco Scutaro? If so, well done, sir. I also like seeing Dan Uggla sneak in at a solid 1010th. That’s pretty good considering it’s only about 950 spots lower than he was being drafted just a few years ago.

On a more constructive note, are there any guys on here that jump out at you as being particularly overrated or underrated by the Player Rater compared to how you’d actually rank them in real life? In the top 100, I’d say I’m a bit surprised that it has Morneau ranked ahead of J. Upton (I guess park factors are a major influence here?). Mookie Betts is also awfully high given the playing time situation in Boston. And I have no idea who Steve Souza is other than that he wrote some pretty damn good marches.

On the other side of the coin, the system seems bearish on a number of pretty good pitchers (Fister, Ventura, Sonny Gray, etc.), although I frankly haven’t looked at any of these guys’ projections. Interested in hearing your thoughts.

    • The total number of players just depends on whomever i give playing time and i have steamer projections. Might have to zero out scutaro with the release. Havent deep-dived enough to have any players circled as over/under. Did notice that the SD OF looks pretty crappy and that is all about park factors. petco sucks. Betts playing time is so hard to peg right now. Will adjust as season goes on. Colorado is gold – mediocre hitters become .300 with decent pop and great players are .320. Check out colorado’s hitting stats year vs year. Crazy. morneau and cuddyer competed for batting titles! Souza is an intriguing rookie – he will be drafted in all formats. Pitchers are tough – none of those three are great with k’s. Gray/Ventura need to research more before coming to stronger opinion

When figuring the values do you include bench players. My Yahoo league starts 12 hitters & 7 Pitchers with 6 bench spots.

    Thanks

    Hi Rudy,
I’m in 2 leagues this year with unconventional categories and I think I can pull them from your data, but I’m not sure how. The first is a Roto 5×5 with R, Rbi, SB, OBP, SLG ERA, WHIP, K, QS, H+SV. I think I can get a SLG estimate from OPS by doubling it and subtracting OBP, but I don’t know how to turn it into a 5×5, and I can’t get H+SV.

The second league is stranger. Roto 6×5 (don’t ask me!) R, RBI, SB, HR, OBP, TB ERA, WHIP, K, SV, QS. I will use my SLG estimate instead of TB, but again I don’t know how to set up the 6×5.

Any help you can give me is appreciated. I can’t imagine how I played fantasy baseball back in the Dark Ages before Razzball.

    • I do have projections for all those stats (in the Steamer Hit/Pitch) section but $ are tougher.

I think for the first one, you’re on the right path assuming you mean subtract AVG (not OBP). So take the 6×6 OPS, subtract AVG and HR, multiply OPS X 2 and then multiply each of the $ by 5/4 (since those are 6×6 $)s. Add the $s up + $1 (for replacement).

I would stick with 5×5 results for the second offensive one and then vlookup in the TB from the Steamer Hit projections. You need to turn the TB into a $ somehow – hard to explain exactly how to do that one. You can also create a hybrid using the AVG (multiplying by projected AB) and HR. Not sure, though, how to weight HR and AVG correlate w/ SLG.

      • What's an A-Rod? says:

@Rudy Gamble: Thanks Rudy, that’s what I was looking for. Do you have any thoughts on how to get Holds + Saves since both stats appear in separate projections?

  4. Lance says:

Rudy, love the work you’ve done here and looking forward to another year of high level competition in the RCLs. I got a tough one for you, I was wondering if you know enough about ESPN’s Player Rater to say why yours and theirs don’t really see eye to eye.

The reason I’m wondering is because I’ve got my own values formula plugged into spreadsheets with various projections and I’m trying to improve it but mostly I’m just curious. I even made a formula that apes your values pretty well, just for fun/comparison sake although it arrives at the conclusion in a totally different manner.

    • Thanks. Espn’s appears to be based on z-scores which seem to overvalue SBs. That is the only major difference I have seen

      • Lance says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Technically what appears to have happened is ESPN overvalues both SB and AVG relative to your values. Or to put it another way they value R/RBI/HR less than you. Part of the reason it looks like it’s about SB, is SB guys tend to also not have a lot of HR or RBI and the lack of those doesn’t hurt them as much in ESPN player rater as it does yours.

For an example look at McCutchen relative to Bautista and especially Cano relative to Kinsler. ESPN likes Cano almost as much as they like Kinsler and Cano sacrifices everything to Kinsler except for AVG where he has a huge advantage. I actually think that may demonstrate the difference is actually more in R/RBI and AVG than in SB.

My spreadsheet values were more like ESPN but after seeing your differences (and methodology) I’m probably going to hedge a little bit and bring down the importance of AVG (and OBP for leagues that use it instead).

        • Interesting. Mine likely different because I use point shares (aka sgps).

        • Lance says:
          (link)

I should clarify that all of the player references are to their 2014 stat lines.

  5. Kevin says:
    (link)

This is truly great information. However, I am trying to figure out how $/G is calculated. Could you please explain it for me, and maybe the rest of us. Much appreciated.

    • Thanks Kevin. So there are three ways one could calculate $:

$ – Great for full-season measurement but gives a distorted picture for players likely to miss time to injury or minor leagues (as this does not factor in replacement stats)

$/PA – Last year, I did $/600 PA I think. FanGraphs has WAR based on Steamer 600 PA. This treats all hitters apples-to-apples but ignores the fact that players at the top of the lineup get more PA per Game.

$/G – So I created this metric which condenses a player’s projected season stats onto their projected PA/Game. I then create a player universe from that data to determine category values, etc. PA/Game estimates are far from perfect but it is better than just treating everyone with the same PA. For hitters, I run this against RHP and LHP splits to give a quick/easy way to see if a player is worth starting in 12-team leagues. On the player pages, if you click on the RHP or LHP $ in the top left of the page, you’ll be skipped to their projected stats for a full season against RHP and LHP. You’ll find a surprising amount of left-handed hitters are really blech against LHP. Even someone as highly picked as Bryce Harper probably should be benched in shallow leagues against LHP assuming one has a decent OF option to swap in. (Note: for pitchers, it’s the same premise except taking IP per GS or Game relieved into account. There is no way that Kendall Graveman is going to throw the same IP/GS as Kershaw so an $/IP makes less sense. Better to project based on GS).

      Hope that helps…

And, with inning caps for pitching categories do you think pitchers with higher K/9 rates would hold better value and is this reflective in the rankings?

    Thank you!

    • Thanks. Moses component?

Yes, I use the same 67/33 offense/defense splits for Yahoo even though it’s 10 hitters. You can always scale them up/down if you think it should be a different split.

It depends on where you put the innings cap. The default is 1,400 IP which I’ve played before and it doesn’t change pitcher values at all. You can go 6 full-time SPs, 3 relievers and fall within that cap. If it’s lower than that, it still doesn’t change my SP values. What it does is add a slightly higher value per start – meaning I’d be more likely to bench a rostered SP when they have a mediocre matchup or drop my 5th/6th SP when I see a couple of mediocre to bad matchups coming up.

      Make sense?

      • Sport says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: makes good sense to me! Not having to play the extra corner infielder changes the scarsity in my opinion so I like using the rater. It also puts realistic values on top closers. I also usually stream the last one or two SP spots the inning caps stuff makes perfect sense.

        Thank you!

Any chance of getting “traditional” lineups for mixed league (aka ESPN but for 2C)?

If not, how would you adjust Catcher $ values for such a format?

    Thanks (and great work).

    • @SKI: Thanks. I covered how I handle 2 catcher mixed leagues in this article from last year: https://razzball.com/position-adjustments/

Basically, I take the approach that 2nd catchers are way inferior to other roster slots and I do not want to invest anything but the minimum for catcher #2 ($1 or near last pick in snake). Thus, there’s no reason for me to change the $ value b/w one catcher and two catcher leagues.

The article covers what happens if one makes the proper adjustment to 2 catchers – a huge premium on catchers that, in my eyes, invests too much of your draft $ / pick value.

      • SKI says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Thanks for the response. I do have one follow-up though.

While I agree that spending much on Catchers is not normally a good investment and tend to consider them disposable (traded away a $3 keepable Grandal last year in a heavy keeper for unkeepable players to solidify my title shot), I wonder if ignoring the negative value that many C have will hurt overall team performance and accurate valuations. Getting 2 catchers with zero value combined is $10 better than getting 2 that combine for -$10. Put in concrete terms, spending $8 for zero value is $4 better than spending $2 for -$10. Thoughts?

        • I hear you. My system doesn’t ignore catcher value. It’s basically accepting that your second catcher has a negative value vs worth. So while a goal might be for all other positions to get guys a couple $ cheaper than their value, a 2nd catcher it’s all about minimizing the negative value. That could mean spending $2 late game (if you’ve got an extra buck) for a -$5 catcher vs $1 for a -$10 catcher. But when other systems boost the 30th catcher to $1, it means the 16th catcher might bump up to $5-$10 and encourages more $ spent at catcher than I think is right.

Last point is that I’ve found that there is a lot of disagreement on values at Catcher 16-30. I think I got Nick Hundley as my C2 in several leagues last year and had him as a top 15 catcher. So there’s little incentive to take away the $ from other positions/players to make catchers look ‘right’. (Note: While this seems academic, auction drafting is about snap decisions. Taking $1 from every player to distribute to C2 could be the difference in losing meaningful players.)

Just had my first draft yesterday (5×5 roto yahoo) and as the draft wound down I started rethinking my views on position scarcity. I usually go with whomever has the best stats and just use position scarcity as mostly a tie-breaker. That’s why Ill chose to spend my $40 on Rizzo instead of Machado (SS ). But in looking at the $1 SS/2B v the $1 OF/1B, I’m thinking about changing it up a bit. I know Grey is a proponent of stocking 1B/OF and going cheap on the MI/C positions, and I agreed, but now I’m not so sure. What are your thoughts?

And on a related note, I assumed these projections had position scarcity built in, but I’m starting to question that. For instance, McCutchen and Correa have basically the same $31 Value here. McCutchen is projected for 87/23/86/12/.293 and Correa 84/22/86/22/274. Those numbers strike me as essentially even, so why is their value even? Correa obviously plays the much scarcer position.

  15. Owen Simring says:
    (link)

Ok, last question–appreciate the patience. I’ve read everything you’ve written on the subject of position scarcity, but while I totally want to buy in to your views on the matter, I can’t reconcile an example post from Fangraphs a year ago on why scarcity exists.

They present a hypothetical: Player A, B, C, D. Player A is a 1B worth $50 by year’s end. B is a 1B worth $40. C is a SS worth $30 and D is a SS worth $10. You and another guy are doing a 2 round snake draft. You have two choices; draft A then D, or draft C then B. First option starts with the most valuable player, regardless of position, and nets you $60. Second option starts with player who has the best combination of value and scarcity, and nets your $70. If I were to create a way of valuing SSs from this example, I’d give SS eligibility $30 of value (difference between worst SS and worst 1B).

So doesn’t this simplified example show that position scarcity does matter? The $1 SSs are worth less in a vacuum than the $1 1Bs. So by drafting the really good SS who is slightly worse than the really good 1B, you get to now draft the $1 1B who is better than the $1 SS, and that makes up for the value lost by taking the SS to begin with.

    • Thanks for reading those posts! I think you’re referring to Mike Pod’s posts, right? I like Mike a lot – he’s a good guy. I disagree with him on this though. I think here is a cleaner, more realistic example. Imagine we start with no position adjustments in a 12-team league with Yahoo settings. So figure the 2 UTIL chomp away at any solid DH + 1B/OF + maybe a 3B or two. Now if the 12th SS was worth -$7 and the 48th OF was worth $1, then there is a case for getting a SS earlier and that there is actual ‘scarcity’.

But my research showed that this wasn’t the case. The last player available was worth about $1 for all positions except catcher (where it isn’t far off except in 2 C leagues)

I have found whatever imbalance there is at positions is addressed by UTIL slots.

Now in an in-draft scenario where there is a bigger gap b/w player a and b at one position and player c and d at another position, of course you select in a way that maxes the sum of the two players. But that could mean taking the 1B before the SS or vice versa. Had nothing to do with position scarcity – just maximizing roster value.

      Hope that makes sense…

you guys used to have a handy chart showing the expected value of each pick and it would lessen as draft goes down. the one here was for 12 teamers, would there be a way that shows it for drafts of bigger sizes (say up to 500 players), i had attempted to use the 12 team one in previous years (to make my hitter/pitcher ratios approach 67/33, or whatever number i wanted), but after a much smaller than 400 number it hit zero or negative number. Probably my biggest league is a 16 teamer that drafts 28 (448 players deep), but i might be in some 20 teamers with 25 man rosters too (500). There probably is just some simple formula for this such that i can come up with my own values for each draft without needing a table at all. EX: i draft out of the 11 hole in a 16 team league with 28 roster spots. My first pick is at 11 and has an X value, then my last pick at 437 should have a near zero value, but it’s very nice to be able to know when/if i’m drafting too much hitting/pitching as these deep drafts get later and later.

Hi, Rudy. The 2015 end of season rater has Melancon as the highest ranking RP at 108. This 2016 rater has 11 RPs ranked higher than 108 (with Kimbrel highest at 54). Can we really expect 11 RPs to rank above 108 at the end of 2016? What am I missing? I would expect the pre-season rater to be estimating end of season performance…?

    • @Fred Barker: It’s a good question. The answer is that when looking at end of season, there’s no mystery left about who got the saves. If we had a draft based on 2015 stats, no one is prioritizing closers because SAGNOF is in full effect. All the $ that are allotted for RPs have to be spread pretty thin.

But in the preseason, I’m very conservative on projecting saves for non-established closers. The failure rate is so high. So the more established closers get a greater share of the reliever $ allotment.

Since no other position has remotely this type of uncertainty when it comes to projections vs actuals, one should expect secure RPs are the player group that most warrants premiums.

Now, as the preseason progresses, I would expect bullpen situations to get a little more stable and thus my Save projections go up for the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of teams. That will start to bring the values down on closers.

Thanks for explaining how you got where you are at. I look at any set of pre-season rankings as one’s projections as to where to draft a player. If you are ranking players higher than where they will end up, then I must make an adjustment to reflect end of season. Not only do the current rankings inflate value for RPs (by your own admittance), they end up de-flating other players who will likely end up higher in value at end of season. From my limited perspective, I am looking to draft players who are most likely to return value at ranked levels (or better if I find a nuance).
Just food for thought…that you might try to find a way to adjust them to nearer real value–not some value that you fully expect to deflate as the season progresses.
    I love you man!

    • My calcs have 9 RP in top 103 with the top being Kimbrel at 66.

D-e-n-i-a-l. Nine out of ten managers that draft an RP in the top 100 will see those players ranked 100+ at end of season. NO WAY am I drafting closers in my top 100 picks. And, sadly, it makes your rankings very difficult to rely upon on draft day. (I will do my best to find value picks from your list.)

    • Yahoo – 9 RPs taken in the first 105 picks with 58.7 (Kimbrel) as #1 – https://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/draftanalysis?tab=SD&pos=RP&sort=DA_AP

It is fine that you subscribe to SAGNOF. Based on these #s, you can also infer that at least 2 out of 12 drafters should NOT take a closer in the first 8-9 rounds.

But i’ve given you two examples (NFBC and Yahoo) that show my preseason player rater is RIGHT ON w/ its assessment of market value for RPs.

I take pride in this since that was a flaw in previous years where someone like Kimbrel or Chapman would appear in the top 30. And I solved it by studying how drafters value RPs and made the proper adjustments to the amount of draft $ devoted to RPs.

    Hi Rudy –

Similar question to some others. I’m trying to find *draft* (not auction) rankings for Yahoo!, 12 team mixed, snake draft, head-to-head (category), 7 (5+ OBP, TB) x 7 (5+ Holds, K/9).

I see the razzball 2016 projections have all the data that I’d need if I were to build something or could import data into a rating system. So I’m looking for a way to:

    – modify the 6×6 OBP to include TB and get an adjusted ranking
    – modify the 7×7 QS+Holds to replace QS with K/9
    – combine both into a single “overall draft ranking” table … although I could live w/out that – but working off a two data sets in a live draft could be exceedingly time challenging.

    Thanks. :o)

    • For the pitching, i’d use the 6×6 Holds, double count the $Ks, and then multiply the sum by 6/7.

For the hitting, I’d start with the 6×6 OBP. You can vlookup in the total base projections and try to create your own $ for it to adjust the total. I can’t imagine the 7th category really changes player values that much. Might be easier adjusting up/down slightly if a player has particularly high/low TBs.

Sorry I can’t provide something quicker/easier. Just too many variations of league formats and creating a tool that works as I want it to isn’t as easy as I’d like.

Wow … completely sick. Nice work.

    A few questions …

So if I am in a 7×7 with OBA and TB …

    – I can work off the “Other Hit” table, and add the (AVG w/ OBA) *and* (OBA w/AVG) and TB to “5×5” $ value?
    – If so, should I not be subtracting out the 5×5 $AVG (from the 5×5 Table) as otherwise I’d be double-counting AVG?
    – So for example … Trout has a total $ of 63 in the 5×5. I’d remove 10,9 and add back in 10.8 (AVG w/OBA) and 15.7 (OBA w?AVG)?
    – I thought that I might get a normalized “5×5 value” (based on a $260 budget) by dividing the new value by 7 and multiplying by 5 – but I get a value of 65.5 instead of the expected 6×6 value of 67.1.
    – I was hoping that this was a valid normalization formula so that I would add in the above, plus TB … divide by 7 and multiply by 5, but I’m wondering now if this is a useful/meaningful approach.

Conversely, I could work off the 6×6 OBA table (presumably accounting for w/AVG and w/OBA) and add in the $TB from the “Other Hit” table? However, I’m mindful that the $tat vals for the 5×5 (eg … Mike Trout … HR $17.1) are different than for the 6×6 OBA (eg … Mike Trout … HR $15.1).

Any advice on how to derive (a) gross dollars and (b) a normalized value would be helpful.

I need to go through the same exercise in x7 Pitching (add Holds and K/9).

    Advice most gratefully appreciated.

Damned fine work – I just need to wrap my head around how to massage the data to get the outputs most-useful.

    Thanks.

But I am still curious about using the 5×5 value (which accounts for Average – without OBA) and adding “AVG w/OBA” (plus OBA w/AVG and TB). Does this not double count (not exactly but close) Average? So for my 7×7 …

        5×5 —> ( (5×5)+ (AVG w/OBA) + (OBA w/AVG) + TB))

So I guess I’m still wondering whether, specifically because it’s an OBA *and* AVG league, whether I should be pulling out the 5×5 $AVG when adding back the (AVG w/OBA) value?

Thanks again. I think that’s the last of my questions on my questions. I hope.

I have a H2H, points Yahoo Auction league coming up next week. I use steamer projections to project points and then your method for calculating dollars. I typically use 67/33 splits but I find it hard to get similar value pitchers with that in this league. We roster 22 players but there’s no GS or innings limit. The strategy most everyone employs is to roster 10 hitters and 12 pitchers. The projections indicate about 57% of points will be hitting but the VAR (value above replacement) 50/50 for hitters/pitchers. I find the inflation of pitchers in the league makes it difficult to nab guys with potential or good value. Should I alter the splits? I was leaning toward 60/40 but top hitters still seem too low.

Last season I built an offensive monster that included Altuve, McCutcheon, Cespsedes, and Betts along with my keepers of with keepers of Rizzo, Kluber, and Tyson Ross but my pitching was meh. Any guidance will be useful.

    • @DisEnFranchised: I think you’re thinking about this completely right. 67/33 is about the average in leagues where the hitter/pitcher ratio is 13/9 or 14/9. Why don’t you pull last year’s auction to determine the Hit/PItch mix. I also recommend calculating an SP/RP mix.

The other thing to consider here is draft strategy. If few bench spots are used for hitters, ‘punting’ hitter position(s) gives you the opportunity of using earlier draft picks to beef up your staff. I’m pro-punting C/2B/SS and using early bat picks on power (can always get speed/average later w/ a Lemehieu).

      Hope that helps!

      • DisEnFranchised says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:
        K. So I’ll go with either the true % or 60/40; because typically there are only a couple teams that start with 2-3 hitters on the bench. The SP/RP mix used to favor SPs because of scoring but now the scoring changed some to bolster RPs. I’ve had seasons where I didn’t roster a single true RP and my 2 RP slots were SPs eligible for SP/RP. That doesn’t seem necessary now.

I usually punt C and SS. Last season I was up bidding Carlos Santana because I felt he was going to someone too cheap and ended up with him. Altuve is projected to be the second best hitter because the scoring favors SBs in addition to the points for doubles. It’s kind of an odd scoring system with 3 points for SB. Since he tends to go for ~$5 less than my valuation, he seems like a good value. This season yahoo has him at 37 and my value depending on the split looks to be $3-8 more; so if he’s the best value I can get for my top $ pick, I will avoid punting 2B. Oddly I think I usually end up punting 3B and picking someone with upside that doesn’t live up to expectation. It’s usually because I can’t get my targeted 3B for the price I’m willing to pay. Last season A-Rod was surprisingly good through the first half of the season.

Anyway, thanks for the help! After finishing 2nd only because James Shields didn’t hang on the QS in the last night of the championship, I’m excited with the promise of building a better staff with the better valuation.

      • DisEnFranchised says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Thanks again for your help. I really liked my valuations going into my auction. I wish they had worked to my liking though. I think I either need to split towards the VAR splits or go with inflated offense. There’s no middle of the road in this league. Pitchers I had ranked in the 30s go for$ 25+ and premium bats aren’t discounted in return.

After being bargain oriented to a fault throughout the draft I adjusted and got aggressive with my bids on young arms with potential. The Problem is that their possible keeper potential for next season will be lost in the aggressive prices I paid. Only 3 keepers though. I went in with Rizzo, Betts, and Kluber and came out with the following lineup:

        C- PTBNL
        1B- Rizzo
        2B- Murphy
        3B- K. Seager
        SS – Semien
        OF- Betts, Polanco, and Parra
        U- Hosmer
        B- Deshields, Gattis, and Alicedes

SP- Kluber, Liriano, C. Martinez, R. Iglesias, Gio, Matz, Maeda, Corbin, Severino
        RP- Allen and Rondon

I hate that I love my pitching. I also hate that I screwed up and missed my nomination and yahoo Qd another SS after I acquired 1.That cost me a temporary C and prospect pick so that I could fill my bullpen. I hate my Murphy pick but I don’t think I am willing to waste a move to remedy it right now with there being a 40 move limit. I will burn 3 for a prospect, C, and SP.

So my questions, should I go 50/50 split or back to inflated hitting for my valuations? Also, will Gattis become C eligible in yahoo? Soon? Thanks

For a 12-team ESPN-style league, there are only 66 pitchers with non-negative dollar values. A 12-team league would require 108 (12×9) pitchers to be bought.
Similarly, for the hitters, there are 119 hitters with a non-negative dollar value. A 12-team league would require 156 (12×13) hitters to be bought.
    Why is this?
Lastly, adding up all of the positive dollar values, gets $2872, when one would expect $3120 (12×260).

Is there a fundamental flaw in the dollar values , or (more likely) am I missing something?

Either way, thanks for all the work.

    • @Five-On-One: I just looked and I see 157 hitters and 110 pitchers at $1+. Are you sure you don’t have a filter in place that is excluding some players?

      • Five-On-One says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: You are correct. It looks like it may be a war room (both web based and excel) problem. Not an auction values page problem. What’s the best way to have this fixed?

@Rudy Gamble: Same issue on the rankings-grey auction values. Probably linked?

Way to go, Rudy. You ARE THE MAN. Your ‘Other’ categories just made my 2017 a little less bleak.

Could you possibly add $hits as an additional category?

Rudy – do you know of a good tool/template to use when trying to create auction values after taking into account keepers? So how do I redistribute the remaining dollars each team has to the actual available players? H2H points league, 10 team mixed, yahoo. Thanks.

    • I’ve read good posts on this in the past. I think Excel is the way to go.

      Here’s how I’d do it:
      1) Determine $ per player if there were no keepers (my Yahoo 10-team is probably a good start depending on your scoring formula).
      2) Find all ‘keepers’ and put their $ next to the player’s value.
      3) Sum up the difference (e.g., a player worth $30 who is kept at $10 would be $20).
      4) Divide that sum by $2600 ($260 * 10), add 1 and then multiply all $ values by that constant – e.g., if there were $260 in total savings, then $260/$2600+1=1.1. 1.1 * every players $.

Let me know how it goes…

Am I a dummy or is this not downloadable as an excel spreadsheet? if not, any way you can show me how to convert it? Sorry for the hassle, this is my first time doing an auction draft. Thanks Rudy!

@Rudy Gamble: When i click Download and then Get CSV, nothing happens. Im on a Mac desktop fyi…

        • Check to see if you have pop-up blocker on. Moving radio button from pop-up to download might fix it too.

Question on updates. I’m noticing that players are quickly & accurately docked plate appearances due to injury or injury risk. What I’m not seeing (maybe it’s there and I’m missing it) is plate appearances added to their likely replacements. E.G. Both Desmond & Dahl have lost PAs, but Gerardo Parra hasn’t noticeably gained PAs.

Am I right or am I just missing it? Thanks. Tool is invaluable.

@Q: i moved up mark Reynolds who I had projected for 0 PA this year. I nudged Wolters and Garneau up with Murphy injury. Problem with Parra is unclear how much time Dahl misses but perhaps Parra should get nudged a bit.

Hey guys! If I use any of the rankings that doesn’t specify the number of teams (6×6 QS etc.), do I have to adjust anything? Or just use the same values

Thanks for making everyone in my leagues hate me every year!

    • Unless otherwise noted, the player values are for standard 5×5 scoring.

  40. Q says:

    Hi Rudy–

My league uses K/BB as a category. If I’m using your site, what’s the best number to approximate that? Maybe averaging Ks & WHIP?

    Thanks for the great tool

    • @Q: you’re welcome. assuming you have K/BB in addition to the standard 5×5, I’d pretty much ignore it or take the average of K and WHIP $. I don’t really think K/BB changes the rankings to any great degree other than making relievers a little more valuable.

So…..I know you’re not a math tutor, but it’s always worth an ask.

On the “Other Hit” page, you give the math to convert values to a 10 team, 14, 15 team league, etc.

Is there a calculation for an 8 team league?

Well, yeah, there must be, so let me ask in a different way.

Do you quickly-and-without-going-to-much-trouble KNOW the calculation?

    Thanks for considering.

Why is Puig so high? Above Aaron Judge? What am I missing?

      • Mike says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Well, Razzball has Aaron Judge as the 8th ranking OF and Puig 33. Do you think this shows a flaw in the $/g analysis, or perhaps does the auction analysis provide a truer picture of how Puig stacks up?

        • we have two different sets of rankings. the player raters are based on steamer rates with my playing time + adjustments. those consistenly have puig and judge as near equal with puig slightly higher.

the other set is grey’s rankings which are in his posts as well as, ultimately, on his top 500+ rankings sheet. so you’re seeing two different opinions.

i don’t see the difference in opinion as a flaw per se. it’s just two different takes and grey and I are both successful.

          • so my opinion is Puig is a much better value than Judge. i highly doubt i’ll have any Judge shares and will likely have Puig shares.

Hi Rudy. Really appreciate your hard work making useful tools available for us ummm, tools!

I’m sure you will have a post addressing this but, I am trying to put together my 15-team, NFBC rankings from your projections. I’ve re-read your previous articles and I’m trying to determine if I should weight categories (essentially mirroring what my fellow NFBC drafters will likely do) OR not weight them (leaving them equal weight, I suppose.)

I’m afraid if I don’t weight them, my team will be full of the Markhakis/Heyward/D Murphys of the world and not HR/SB guys. Thanks for any advice you can think of!

    • Squat Cobblers says:
      (link)

Oh I forgot. I am using 63.5/26/10.5 cause I think these 15-team drafts tend to bump up closers slightly. Do you think this is reasonable? Thanks again!!

    • @Squat Cobblers: good question. i haven’t decided what i’m doing this year but this is something worth accounting for. i am leaning towards just monitoring my drafted category $ throughout draft and balancing that way. i am looking at power/speed/AVG prior to draft as part of prep. fwiw, murphy’s a steal at current adp

  44. Brennan Cassidy says:
    (link)

This may be a newb question but is the PS column label equal Points? In a points league and looking for the optimal way to use this great resource for that league!

    • @Brennan Cassidy: PS=Point Shares which is an estimate of how much of an increase/decrease the player would be in the roto standings vs an average player (e.g., a 5.0 PS means an 82 point team would be projected at 87).

for points leagues, i’d just go to the hitter/pitcher projection pages, download to excel, and calculate points based on your league formula.

        Thank you Rudy! Great stuff

      • Timbo says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:

Rudy, how would you go about calculating auction values for points leagues after what you describe above? I took total drafted players and totaled their projected scores and divided the league total budget by that total points number. I then took that $ per point number and multiplied it by a player’s point projection. My problem is I seem like my auction values come out way too low. Even after dividing the hitters $ amount by 0.70 I’m still getting just $31-$32 for Trout/Betts. That seems too low to me. We start 12 hitters and 10 pitchers in an ESPN points league with a budget of $300. Thanks!

        • not sure how many teams are in your league. assuming 12, look up the points for the 12*22=264th player and subtract that total from every player. then re-run your points calculation.

    Rudy,
Thanks for the hard work. This is a phenomenal resource.

Apologies if you’ve answered this already but how would you adjust $ values for a league with rosters of a different size?
I’m playing in a 14-team Yahoo 6×6 (OPS & QS) but we employ 12 hitters and 9 pitchers plus bench spots. Note this is similar to ESPN with its 13/9. I suppose I could use the ESPN version and slightly downgrade the $ values subjectively, but I’m a numbers geek and I’m frustrated that I’m not able to reverse engineer your $ values.
Much appreciated and good luck this season.

    Rudy,
I’m only slightly intimidated by the volume of information here and trying my best to use it properly.

I’m in a 10 team, 9×9 (H, BB, OPS, SO) + (QS, HLD, L, K/9) H2H weekly categories league. Looking for a recommendation for the best resource to generate custom draft values. Is this something that Razzball offers?!? Greatly appreciate any advice.

    Many thanks

Rudy – Something might be amiss with the formulas. Sal Perez is projected for 0 ABs, yet is generating $5.7 worth of value in Batting Average. Only 30 players generate more value in that category than poor Sal. This can’t be right, can it?
