Steamer Projections - Created in 2008 and maintained and operated by Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom. One of the top (if not the top) performing projection systems based on our 2012 baseball projections test. Playing time estimates as well as Saves, Holds, and Quality Starts are provided by Rudy Gamble of Razzball.

Grey Projections - Grey has produced fantasy baseball projections @ Razzball for several years as part of his yearly preseason rankings. His projections have performed admirably against more mathy solutions – particularly given that his projections are release pre-March when playing time estimates are more hazy.

Auction Values  - Two $ values are provided per player based on a $260 budget.  The first one (which also determines rank) distributes dollars equally to hitters and pitchers based on number of rostered spots (so in ESPN which has 13 hitters and 9 pitchers, it would give 13/22 of the $260 to hitters and 9/22 of the $260 to pitchers).  A slight adjustment is made that boost the amount of $ to hitters vs. pitchers to account for the greater predictability found in hitting stats vs. pitching stats in the aforementioned 2012 test.  The second dollar value is based on a disproportionate distribution of dollars towards hitters (for ESPN leagues, this is $180 to hitters and $80 to pitchers).  This valuation leads to rankings more in line with what is seen in typical snake drafts.

Point Shares Methodology - The values under the stat categories are Point Shares.  They represent the estimated difference in an average team’s points if they were to substitute a given player for the average player at his position.  So if a player has a 1.0 for Runs, he would, on average, increase a team’s standing points by 1 point.  Multi-position eligible hitters are assigned their most valuable position for Point Share calculations based on the following order of most valuable to least valuable: C, SS, 2B, 3B, OF, 1B, DH. For more information on the methodology, see here.

Data Sources for Auction Values / Point Shares:  These results are based on a combination of Steamer and CAIRO data as this combination proved to be slightly better than any single source in our 2012 baseball projections test.

Position Eligibility - 20 Games in last season for ESPN and ’2 Catcher’ formats.   10 Games for Yahoo.

ESPN Roster Format - C/1B/2B/SS/3B/CI/MI/5 OF/UTIL/9 P.

Yahoo! Roster Format - C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P.

Hi – Wanted to start by saying I love this site for the witty comments, message board and, oh yeah the fantasy advice and projections. It’s without a doubt the one site I rely on the most for the fantasy season, especially pre-draft. I’ve been in two leagues at cbssportsline.com for 10 years – an AL only 8 team league and a NL only 10 team league. The leagues are Head-to-Head, Points Based System. Scoring per Period (Monday-Sunday) – Scoring based on total stats each period. Each owner gets $260 and must leave the draft with 26 players. The $$ can be spent anyway an owner wishes but to field a lineup one must have C, 1b, 2b, ss, 3b 3 OFers + 2 DH’s – (which can basically be any hitter). An owner must start 3 SP, 2 RP’s and 1 SP or RP. An owner submits a lineup of 16 players before the start of the first game(s) in a scoring period/week. Once the lineup is set, no changes can be made. Below is a description of league rules, scoring system, etc. Which of the posted projection systems would you say most closely resembles my leagues format? I’ve never been able to find one the fits like a glove. Do you recommend another site, paid or not, where I might be able to plug in my leagues scoring system to get a more accurate listing of players rankings and $$ value?

Any comments/advice you, Senior Mustache, or any of the crew have is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Playoffs Start Period 19

Contract Status, Option Year & Long Term Contracts
From season to season, each team must retain between 5 and 11 players.

Any player acquired via the auction is in the first year of a contract, designated by the letter ‘A.”

If this player is retained/frozen the following season, he shall become a ‘B.’

After two seasons (a season is defined as any part of a major league season) of a player being owned by any fantasy team without having been released to the free agent pool or traded into the other league, is considered a ‘C’ player and must be signed to a long-term contract, given his option contract, or released.

If a player is released or traded from the league, he is made available to all teams in the next major league auction.

If a player is given his option contract, his salary remains the same for one season. After that season is complete, the player must be released and made available for the next major league auction.

If a player is signed to a long-term contract, his salary will be raised by $5 for each ADDED year of the long-term contract. For example, if a player’s salary is $9 and a team wishes to sign him to a three-year contract, his salary is increased by $10 to $19. Additionally, this player would be designated as an ‘E’ player (E for the first year of the long-term contract, D for the second year and C in the final year of the long-term contract).

If a player is released before the end of his contract, the team releasing that player will be penalized 1/2 of the contract value for the remaining years.
    For Example:

If a player is signed for $10 and is released it would cost the Owner $5 for all remaining contract years. If he was $11 it would be $6. If a player switches leagues or is traded the team Owner is relieved of his contract obligation.

A player may be signed to only one long-term contract. After the contract has expired, the player must be released and made available for the next major league auction.

Trades between owners do not affect the contract status of a player.

Draft Eligibilty – Players must be on a major league roster on draft day to be eligible for drafting. (NL players can only be drafted in the NL fantasy league and vice versa).

Innings Pitched to Qualify for Playoffs = 615 Innings. Starting Lineup must
    have 3SP; 2RP; 1SP/RP as designated by SportsLine.com.

    • Hey Maestro – hmm, I think I need to know a bit more about your league before I can say for sure.

      JUST KIDDING!

I think the only approach you can take is to grab projections (the steamer projections have most of these), ignore the fluke ones like no-hitters, and come up with your point totals/rankings…
