Grey awoke, pulled off his Mare of Easttown footie pajamas, and changed into his typical work wear: a T-shirt of himself. He walked to the mirror, inspected the graphic print on his T-shirt (making sure to do a quick comb of the decal mustache), and walked away. There were things to do today! After all, today was Monday.

Wait, what? Monday!? Had he slept right through Sunday and missed FAAB? Where was the weekend recap? Did anybody update about Cody Poteet? Grey opened his Blackberry, closed all the Lycos windows, and went straight to his AOL sign-in. [email protected]he typed in, hoping there were some updates. But the mailbox was filled with coupons for inferior tea companies promising coconut pearls to replace the dearly departed boba…wait…that was it! Like a Celine Dion 90s hit, it was all coming back to him now. He tossed the Blackberry aside and went to his walk-in pantry, flinging the doors wide.

Inside, Donkey Teeth lay passed out, his head resting on bags of tapioca starch. We did it! Grey thought to himself. We heisted the boba! He cackled gleefully to himself, stepping back into his kitchen and closing the pantry as DT mumbled, “Grey…”.

Why yes, Grey thought to himself, That’s the reason I’m so excited today: RazzPearls! He went to his Blackberry and loaded up Allreceipes.com, ignoring the multiple e-mail notifications from Cram It and Ante. Daddy needs his pearls! Grey cackled as he scrolled through the recipes. Then, a knock at the door. “Open up, customs agents!” voices announced. They don’t have a no-knock warrant, I’m safe for now, Grey thought. A text appeared on his Blackberry, this one from EverywhereBlair: Grey, why aren’t you at the drop-off zone? Is DT alive?” It was quite the mixture to be in. What was more important — RazzPearls or DT? And how did he get Mare of Easttown pajamas so quickly? Why didn’t he remember the heist? Find out next week as we continue the saga: Earl of RazzPearls!

News and Notes

Jack Flaherty

  • 2.90 ERA! 1.02 WHIP! 8 Wins! I am gonna victory lap my sleeper SP1 candidate so hard! I can’t believe my 2021 bold predictions for fantasy baseball starting pitchers is coming true! Lemme just load up the ol’ news-o-nator to before I take my victory lap. Oh dear Carlos Pena — Patron Saint of Fantasy Baseballers — WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? Flaherty’s out until August-ish after pretending to be Vlad Guerrero against Captain Tack:

Elieser Hernandez:

  • Hey, don’t worry fantasy teams, Flaherty may be out but Elieser is back! So glad I held onto the flamethrower after he started the year on the 60-day IL for biceps inflammation. Told ya it was going to be a long one! Whew, off to the news-o-nator. [clicks] WHY, CARLOS PENA, WHY!?!?! Elieser is back to the IL after doing his best Jon Berti impression. Hernandez strained his quad and needed to be assisted off the field. He’s on the 10-day IL, but the injury looks like it’s going to take more than a metric week to heal.

Freddy Peralta:

  • He’s been absolute fire this season and I’m very happy that I told you to pick him up way back in the first week of April. I’m very unhappy that all my drafts took place in early March when the Brewers said he wasn’t going to be a starter. Don’t believe the media, people! Believe me! Sign up for my substack — OnlyCareBlair — down in the comments. ENYWHEY. Peralta threw a BadMum-style no-no, which in regular scoring terms means he made it 7 IP without giving up a hit. Peralta’s been a darling for both the SABRmetric crowd and the baseball card stats crowd. His 2.25 ERA on the season pairs with a sub-1.00 WHIP, and he’s even garnered 6 wins on a terrible Brewers team that’s in the bottom 5 in MLB offense. Peralta’s locked in to the Brewers on a team friendly contract for a few years, so you can expect him to continue his midwest massacres until at least 2024. If you’re in dynasty, he looks like he’s a shoe-in for a top 10 ranking next year, so definitely chase him.

Nathan Eovaldi:

  • Some fantasy baseballers (<—Grey’s mom’s mom’s word) felt let down by Eovaldi after he got shelled at the beginning of May. Thing is, we’re in a world where pitchers are more dominating than ever before and even a single blowup scares off fantasy managers. Problem is, with such domination comes the need for…you guessed it…more domination. Enter Eovaldi. Since getting blown up in the start of May, he’s got 5 starts with a 2.60 ERA, the advanced stats to go with it, and a 28:6 K:BB. What’s best is that his BABIP is kinda unreasonably high this year (over .300) meaning that we could be seeing Eovaldi do even better with a touch more luck. Of course, luck is a two way street. The casino taught me that lesson. But if you’re looking for a pitcher with a bit less lustre that could supplement your team, Eovaldi is a great option.

Randy Dobnak:

  • We ran out of truly suitable free agent adds a few weeks ago, with just the call-ups becoming the “watch list” (and then Alek Manoah got blown up). Meanwhile, pedestrian chauffeur-cum-spot starter Randy Dobnak has another chance to stick in the Twins rotation. Kenta Maeda should be coming back from injury soon — which would push Dobnak to the pen in most situations — but Twins’ starter Matt Shoemaker has imploded over the last month. Shoemaker’s FIP over the last month is near 6, he’s walking almost as many batters as he’s K’ing, and he made it only one out in his last start before getting pulled with 8ER to his name. Bleh. Dobnak isn’t the savior your team is looking for, but he’s got a sub-4.00 FIP in his previous 3 starts, and we saw his new slider in spring training that led to 19 Ks with 0BB. Dobnak has the capability of being a top 75 starter if he sticks in the rotation — and that’s not high praise — but for those in a 16-teamer, you might find cheap value on the wire by grabbing the former Uber driver.

Brad Keller:

  • Keller started the year really rough, failing to get to the 5th inning in 3 out of his first 4 starts. Since then, he’s been 5-2 with a respectable 3.71 ERA to a 3.88 xFIP with a 42:16 K:BB ratio. In other words, he’s basically been a cheap Aaron Nola with less strikeouts over the same time frame. I can’t tell if that’s good for Keller or bad for Nola. Drop me a line in the comments with your opinion! Keller’s rostered in 13% of Yahoo leagues, which means 87% of Yahoo leagues are abandoned or filled with people who don’t read this blog.

Robbie Ray:

  • I’ve been getting some attention for being one of the most aggressive rankers on Robbie Ray out there. And by attention, I mean Jolt is complimenting me. But no pitcher missed more bats this week than Ray. And it’s all thanks to…his complete abandonment of his pitches. Here’s his pitch mix from his last start: sliders and fastballs. That mix is…awfully reliever-like. It’s also Huascar Ynoa-like. Remember how much you loved him before he started his MMA career? I once wondered whether Robbie Ray should just make himself into a reliever, and we’re watching it happen in real time, except he’s starting games. Bully for us! Robbie has a real chance of finishing in the top 20 or even top 10 if his current trajectory holds. However, we all know that it’s extremely hard to maintain this level of success as a starter with only two pitches. Maybe he’s tinkering on the other pitches in the bullpen sessions between starts? If you’ve got details, drop them in the comments and let us know! Also he’s still available in 40% of Yahoo leagues, which is like free money if you’re in the paid leagues.

Robbie Ray Pitch Mix

Gerrit Cole:

  • Remember when Grey called Gerrit Cole overrated? And now Cole is sitting at #5 on the Player Rater? Except, seamheads are noticing that Cole’s spin rate has declined over his last starts, with an alarming drop of nearly 120 RPM in his last start against the Rays. Comparatively, when umpire Joe West told Giovanny Gallegos to switch hats mid-appearance for sticky substances, Gallegos’ spin rate dropped about 40 RPM. So…did Gerrit Cole get into a fight with Bubba? Did he lose his tack? Cole has effectively been blown out in 2 of his last four games, giving up 5ER in 5IP in those outings, good for a 9.00 ERA in those games that’s been offset by his stellar performances in-between. He’s also allowed nearly 9 hits per 9 IP over the last month, which isn’t stellar. So, something isn’t right. But who was right, was Grey…who told you to be wary of a guy who is so tack-reliant. Last year we saw Cole dip into 6+ FIP territory for a month after his lost his tack, so, you may want to HODL your Cole shares or sell high. Again, I’m speaking anecdotally — and you make your own choices for your team — but we’re seeing warning signs and I’d be remiss to not mention them to you.

Gerrit C

Framber Valdez:

  • I hope you used that IL spot for Framber and not, ya know, Marcell Ozuna. Framber came back somewhat quietly and has gone 14:4 K:BB in two starts with a combined 1.64 ERA and he’s already got that CSW% over 30. He’s still available in 30% of leagues and has top 40 upside, so make like the Predator and get to the choppa. Wait, Arnold did that.

Nick Pivetta:

  • He’s sitting as SP36 on the Player Rater as I write this and he’s available in nearly 40% of RCLs and Yahoo leagues. Over the last month, he made 6 starts and snagged 3 wins and 3 QS, to go alongside a 2.81 FIP. Also he’s got an 11.38 K/9 over that period, which is — as the TikTokers say — good. TikTokers use that kind of language, right? I dunno, I barely have internet where I live. I’m leaving this whole article as a voice mail on Grey’s phone. How’s it look, Grey? Did you put in the closeup of Robbie Ray’s pants? ENYWHEY. Who needs Jack Flaherty when you’ve got Nick Pivetta sitting on the wire (<— things I never thought I’d say).

Willians Astudillo:

  • I know you’re all cheering for Ohtani to get right field eligibility, but why aren’t we cheering for Astudillo to get pitcher eligibility? He’s almost there!

Space:X Rankings

I did it again: I did the recency bias thing. What does that mean? I compared the data through this week (the entire season to date) to the data that had accumulated through week 5, which gives us an idea of which pitchers are getting better, which pitchers are cooling off, and whether we should care about Kyle Hendricks coming back from the dead.

Notable Blast-Offs:

  • Kevin Gausman: Mr. Magnetic is the most improved pitcher in tier 1, and that’s saying a lot. He’s K’ing batters at a ridiculous rate and sporting a drop in SIERA nearly 0.80 points over the last month. He’s keeping hitters off base and limiting their damage. Whew, is it hot in here, or is it just me finishing Bridgerton?
  • Tarik Skubal: Uh, small sample size, but…uh…he’s really improving. He’s got the best performance across the board in the true skill rates, and he’s pitched a fair 32 IP over the last month or so. Available in 70% of Yahoo leagues, so it’s probably time to grab him before word gets out.
  • Austin Gomber: Wrote him up last week and told you to grab him. He’s got one of the best CSW% improvements in MLB…and Coors Field and a dilapidated team surrounding him. Whatever, wins are wonky. Roll the dice.
  • Justin Dunn, Patrick Corbin, and Brad Keller: Wrote all of these guys up over the past two weeks. Also Dunn just hit the IL. Give me a tear tattoo. Corbin and Keller were expected to do better; Dunn is still kind of a small sample size darling.

Notable Crash Landings:

  • Corbin Burnes and Gerrit Cole have some of the biggest declines because they ended their walkless streaks. But as noted above, Cole has had some other issues going on.
  • Lance Lynn, Alex Wood, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tyler Mahle, Trevor Rogers, Andrew Heaney: Basically the normalization crowd. These guys started really strongly [stares at Andrew Heaney] and we’re seeing them come back down to earth. Lynn has always been a volume-over-efficiency guy so he’s fine for your teams, but the others are starting to settle into that SP30-40 range that is more typical of their player profiles than where they started the year.

Because so many people requested that I include the bias data last time I did it, I’m leaving it in the table this time. Yeah, it’s a mess, but at this point, there’s not a lot of free agents who will truly help your team. Plenty of trade moves to make, though! The “Diff” categories stand for “difference” and they represent the complete season data minus the data through Week 5. N/A is “no data.” Positive numbers are good and negative numbers are bad in all cases except SIERA, where the inverse is true. Because there are so many columns, I put the tiers on the left-hand side for now. You get the idea. It’s all arbitrary. You want to get as many high outcome players on your team, and that’s what matters. Let me know if you have questions down in the comments, otherwise, I’ll see you next week!

Aye, you made it this far, didn’t ya. EverywhereBlair is, well, located at home right now. He’s a historian and lover of prog-metal. He enjoys a good sipping rum. When he’s not churning data and making fan fiction about Grey and Donkey Teeth, you can find him dreaming of shirtless pictures of Lance Lynn on Twitter @Everywhereblair.
