NOTES:

$ Methodology/FAQs/Definitions:  The foundation behind these player values is our Point Share methodology.  WTF is a Point Share you ask?  It represents the estimated difference in an average team’s points if they were to substitute a given player for the average drafted player at his position (same in concept as Alex Patton’s Standings Gain Points).  So if a player has a 1.0 for Runs, he would, on average, increase a team’s standing points in Runs by 1 point.  Thus, a completely average player is worth zero Point Shares.  These Point Shares are converted to dollars at the total player level as well as for each category.  The sum of a player’s category $ plus $1 (for replacement level) equals their total auction $ value.  Converting Point Shares into $ is covered in the FAQs that I had put together as part of the Historical Player Rater.

Filtering Results:  You can filter multiple fields at the same time.  The text fields below the column headers enable several methods for filtering the data.  Here are some examples:

Function Symbol Example Explanation
ANY MATCH ‘B’ in Pos Typing B in Pos will filter to any player with 1B, 2B, or 3B eligibility.  Type in more details to filter further – e.g., “1B’, “1B, 3B”, etc.
OR | Ruth|Aaron in ‘Name’ All players with Ruth or Aaron in their name
NOT ! !FM in ‘Halls’ All players who are not in both the Hall of Fame and the Hall of Merit
NOR ! | !F|M in ‘Halls’ All players who are not in the Hall of Fame NOR the Hall of Merit.  Just use the ! once.
GREATER THAN > >30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than 30
LESS THAN < <30 in $ All players whose $ is less than 30
GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO >= >=30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than or equal to 30
LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO <= <=30 in $ All players whose $ is less than or equal to 30

Roster:  For ‘ESPN Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P.  For ‘Yahoo Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P.  For AL/NL-only leagues, this is 2C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P.

Pos / MVPos:  ‘Pos’ includes every position the player is eligible.  ‘MVPos’ is the position that was used for their Point Share rankings and is the position where the player is judged most valuable. The order of most valuable to least valuable for positions is: C, SS, 2B, 3B, OF, 1B, DH.  Note that the position eligibility rules for ESPN and AL/NL only formats is 20 games previous season / 10 games current season while Yahoo format is 10 games previous season / 5 games current season.

Steamer Projections – Created in 2008 and maintained and operated by Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom. What would be a better ranking took for a 5 x 5 using OPS? This list or the 6 x 6 OPS list?

What would be a better ranking took for a 5 x 5 using OPS? This list or the 5 x 5 OBP list? Thanks!

    • @Lee: I would use the 6×6 OPS list, subtract the $AVG from each hitter’s total $ and multiply the remaining $ by 1.2.

any idea on how a person could go about creating point shares/ auction values for total bases? My 5×5 OBP league subs out HR for TB. i suspect that a monster doubles hitter (or double shitter) would sneak up the rankings a little.

    • @guy von guy: i would take these results, subtract the $HR, and vlookup in the TB from the Steamer Hitting Projections (https://razzball.com/steamer-hitter-projections). To convert that into $, here is a quick and dirty way would be (TB – 230)/8.

The top hitter should be about $10-$11 and the worst $1 hitter probably ends up around -$2.

Add up the resulting TB$ and compare with the other categories. If it’s too high, nudge up the 8 by decimals (8.1, 8.2). If it’s too low, nudge it down.

      Hope that helps!

Hey Rudy, perhaps this is unrealistic, as it would probably require revamping the way the data is presented, but it would be cool to be able to customize the categories that are used on the fly rather than being restricted to the plethora of set league settings you’ve pre-defined. For example, it’s nice to have QS available, but there is no 5×5 QS league to choose from (+QS, -Wins). And while I’m not a part of one, I’ve been in leagues where Holds, QS and Wins are all categories.

The vision would basically end up looking like clicking through some drop down menus to get your league settings lined up, then a submit button to harvest and normalize the data. League type: ESPN or Yahoo, League size: 8-20 (or whatever), Select Hitter Categories, Select Pitcher Categories – GO.

Like I said, it may be unrealistic, but thought I’d toss it out there as a potential alternative to creating 20+ different pages. Thanks!

    • @The Dude: It’s a totally realistic proposition – just requires a nice chunk of development and we’ve yet to find the right person to deliver it. It’d require some slight changes on how I calculate the $ figures but not much. We’ll get there some day – in meantime, thinking up other ways to deliver more flexibility.

Rudy! So excited to see these. You touched on the limitations of making a fully-customizable page, but I look forward to the day where that’s possible!

My league has K’s and L’s as negative stats. What would you recommend as the best approach to manually fold those stats into the dollar projections above?

    • @Charles: Happy 2016. Can you tell me all the stats in your league? Is it just standard 5×5 with K’s and L’s added? No J’s or semicolon’s?

      • Charles says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: I forgot to mention the S’s and G’s…

        6×6:
R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, K

QS, L, K, SV, ERA, WHIP

        • @Charles: okay, for offense, the K’s definitely have some impact. I have never modeled hitter K’s – do you have the K distribution from your league last year? My guess right now would be to start with the 5x5OBP values and add a $1 for every 20 K’s below 110 and deduct $1 for every 20 K’s above 110 (to be more details – add/deduct 5 cents per K). I’m using 110 K’s b/c that’s about the average K’s I’m seeing in the modeled hitter universe for Yahoo 12 team 5×5 with OBP.

For pitchers, replacing Wins with Losses shouldn’t be a major driver in value since those two are generally inversely related (e.g., someone strong in Wins is usually weaker in Losses). I wouldn’t sweat this one – I’d just use the 6×6 values w/ QS.

          Rudy

          • Charles says:
            (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Thanks a lot, Rudy. 113 turned out to be the average K per hitter slot last season in my league. I’m surprised it would only be $1 per 20 Ks. Intuitively I would’ve guessed closer to $1 per 10 Ks. How did you determine $1 per 20 Ks?

            • Hmm, I think I calculated the point share at 20 k’s so that estimate was low. I think it’d be closer to $3-4 per 20K. Experiment and see how it looks.

    Hey Rudy,
Can you explain what $/G indicates? For both Hitters and Pitchers (and SP vs RP)? Thanks!

    • The Dude says:
      (link)

@The Dude: For the record, I did take the time to look over your FAQ, but couldn’t find any mention of it there.

    • @The Dude: It represents $/Game – so it estimates what the pitcher or hitter is worth on games where they start (or, for a reliever, per appearance). This helps identify strong players whose season-long $ projection is brought down because of playing time limitations (such as injury or getting called up mid-season).

The one note here is that players projected for part-time roles benefit from platooning (less projected PA vs same-handed pitcher). So you shouldn’t assume Adam Lind would be as valuable as a full-time player (where he’d face more LHP like in 2015 where he sucked).

Grey’s rankings that he writes the articles about such as “top 20 shortstops of 2016” are based on a 5×5 league with avg instead of obp just like yahoo leagues correct? If that is the case, why do they not coincide with the rankings on this page for 10 or 12 team yahoo leagues? For example Seager is the #3 shortstop in that article but if I go to 10 team yahoo 5×5 rankings on the player rater he is number #7.

I’m obviously interpreting something wrong. Would you be able to explain that to me?

    • So there are two rankings on the site. Grey’s qualitative rankings and my quantitative rankings based on projections in collaboration with Steamer and my $ valuation methodology.

Grey’s rankings are for 12 team mixed standard 5×5. To see differences between our rankings in an apples-to-apples view, you should go to my ESPN 12 team mixed.

Re: Seager, grey is more bullish than me on him.

  8. Charles says:

Rudy! Great job expanding the rankings to non-traditional categories! 2 questions: 1) how would you model HR Allowed for pitchers? 2) are you as high on Posey as your $ values indicate? When I add in OBP and K’s (as in my league), he shows up among the top hitters.

    • Thanks. I really wouldn’t worry much about HR allowed. HR/FB is volatile. I tend to punt catcher but, no doubt, adding in K’s really helps his value. The guy has a fantastic contact rate for someone with his SLG. I’d have no problem drafting him in top 20 picks in that format.

      • Charles says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: I ask about the HR Allowed because my league might add that as a category. The raw stat is already projected, but how would you value it? Neg-20cents per HR?

Another Q/thought: we talk a lot about K/9 and season K’s, but isn’t it important to think about K per Start? RCL caps starts, for instance.

        • For SPs, I’d add $0.25 to the $ total of SPs for every HR less than 19 and I’d subtract a $ for every HR above 19. For relievers, same $0.25 but with 5 HRs as the dividing line.

Question about the L$ values in the Other Pitch page: how can RPs with projected <5 losses have a lower dollar value than SPs with projected 5+ losses?

    • For most pitcher $, I compare SP vs SP and RP vs RP – then use the average pitcher point share (i.e., how many losses = a standings point). Silly to, say, penalize SP for 0 saves when there is no opportunity to roster a closer in that spot. So a 5 loss SP is fantastic and a 5 loss RP stinks.

      • Charles says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: that makes sense for the SP and RP slots. But most leagues also have P slots and the bench players can rotate into either. I think a valid question is: do I maximize starts? Or maximize RP innings? You can still do the relative pricing of SP vs SP and RP vs RP, but now the SP vs RP decisions are skewed. In a Losses-only league (extreme example), I’d expect RPs to be more valuable than SPs.

        • i’ve found that auctions typically split that way for SP/RP. It’s true that changes in categories can change the standard SP/RP value. if you’ve been in the league before, i’d research to see the splits.

but my guess is that it’s similar and the differences might just be on the # of SP/RP you carry. late draft picks are worth very little.

    Rudy – Please help!!

I’m in a Yahoo 12 team mixed league 5×5 with OBP. I need auction values. When I click on 5×5 OBP under Mixed League (Y! Roster), I see $ values but I dont see projections for each cat. I see what appears to be $ values for each category but not actual projected stats. Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks

    • The underlying projections for the Player Rater are linked on this page under Steamer Hit and Steamer Pitch in top left of the page. The $ on this page reflect the value of each stat. If you want both combined, just download both and connect them using VLOOKUP or SUMIF functions in Excel.

    Greetings,

I’m looking at this OBP 5 x 5 Yahoo rankings list for my upcoming draft and am somewhat confused. Your saying you would draft Kyle Schwarber and Stanton in your top 9 ahead of Votto, Donaldson and Aranado? Am i missing something? Thanks for your time.

    Chase

    • These are projected end of season player rankings. You need to consider the draft room when deciding b/w players. For instance, I took Harper #2 in Tout Wars (15 team, 5×5 OBP) and Stanton at #29. Would have taken a number of players ahead of Stanton with lower values knowing I could get Stanton with my 2nd pick.

How would I convert the Yahoo 5×5 OBP dollar values to a 14 team league? Also, do you have a quick and dirty calculation to get a $ value for doubles? Thanks

      • Zach says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Thank you, and is that to the total or do that to each category?

        • @Zach: either/or. if you do it for the categories, then just sum them up and add $1 for total. the total should add up to close to 1.16 * the sum of all hitters at $1+ in the original sheet (14/12=1.16)

@Rudy Gamble: Expanded to 16 teams this year; what’s the conversion of the Yahoo 5×5 OBP rankings to 16 teams? Thank you as always

            • hey zach – i can give you a formula to convert 12 team $ into 16 team $ but the rankings won’t change since everyone gets the same adjustment. the rankings themselves are pretty consistent from 12 to 16 team. you can compare 12-team to 16-team for standard 5×5 to get a sense.

if you subscribe to the Roto Deluxe, i’ll give you a custom run for this league format closer to your draft date. just bug/remind me at [email protected]

    • @Zach: Sorry for delayed response. Multiply by .83 and then add 6.8.

  14. It has Yadier Molina eligible at 1B for Yahoo. He is only eligible at C.

    Rudy,

Curious as to why the yahoo vs espn 12 team mixed (5×5 OBP) auction values are so different for top 6 players. On average I would say yahoo top 6 players are about 15%-20% greater in auction dollars compared to yahoo. I understand you factor in position eligibility but it just seems pretty drastic for those specific players in leagues with the same settings.

    Thanks

    • 10 batters in Yahoo vs 13 in ESPN but same $260 budget. So everyone is pretty much getting a 30% premium. There are other things at work but that’s the main one :)
