NOTES:
Using the Grid: To sort, click the column header. Clicking once will sort in descending order. Click twice for ascending order. The Name field does not support sorting. To filter, type within the text box underneath the column headers. For text, it looks for any match (so ‘John’ under name would include Johnny Cueto and Chris Johnson). For numbers, you can use greater than and less than signs as well (so >1 in Runs would filter to only players with at least 1 Point Share in Runs). You can use multiple filters at the same time.

Methodology – Our $ methodology is based on our Point Shares (PS) – a SGP variant where we create a universe of rostered players based on the position constraints and value the difference per stat of the player vs the ‘average rostered player’. These differences are then divided by the modeled amount that represents a standing point in that format (e.g., 7 HRs, 15 RBIs). These Point Shares are then added up and divided into fixed dollar distributions for Hitters (67%), starting pitchers (usually around 23%) and relievers (usually around 9%). The sum of the category dollars + $1 equal the players total dollar estimate. $/Game represents a player’s value when he starts a game.

Roster: For ‘ESPN Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P. For ‘Yahoo Roster’, this is C/1B/2B/SS/3B/3 OF/2 UTIL/2 SP/2 RP/4 P. For AL/NL-only leagues, this is 2C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OF/CI/MI/UTIL/9P.

Pos / MVPos: ‘Pos’ includes every position the player is eligible. ‘MVPos’ is the position that was used for their Point Share rankings and is the position where the player is judged most valuable. The order of most valuable to least valuable for positions is: C, SS, 2B, 3B, OF, 1B, DH. Note that the position eligibility rules for ESPN and AL/NL only formats is 20 games previous season / 10 games current season while Yahoo format is 10 games previous season / 5 games current season.

Owned%: Based on ownership within the Razzball Commenter Leagues which consists of 80+ 12-team MLB leagues using the standard ESPN roster format.

  1. Fish says:
    (link)

    I’m just trying to make sense of this and wondering if you (Rudy) have any insight into the inworkings of the Streamer projection system. What does the projection system see in a player like Justin Upton who has been very good to date, but is sporting an absurdly high K% of 30+% and a BABIP of nearly .380. What does Streamer see that makes it say Upton will continue to be a top 15 bat going forward, instead of a player bound for some regression?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

      Steamer has him projected ROS for 131 wRC+. He’s at 165 wRC+ right now. Just for context, the 131 wRC+ wouldn’t get him higher than a top-30 hitter at the moment… so the regression seems to be there.

      • Fish says:
        (link)

        @Jay:

        If Streamer has him at +131 wRC+ ROS which ranks more like top 35, then why does the $ amount rank him within the top-15? Is that explained by what Rudy said below (plays every day, solid R/HR/RBI)?

    • @Fish: If you look at the ‘Expected AVG’ portion of his profile page (https://razzball.com/player/5222/Justin+Upton/), you’ll see Upton’s expected BABIP going into the year was .323 and he’s at .376. His AVG if he had a .323 BABIP is .263. Steamer’s ROS AVG is .268. So the regressions is there.

      I don’t think Steamer particularly loves J-Up but he is a solid bet on R/HR/RBI, won’t kill you on SB/AVG, and is a solid bet for playing nearly every day. If you gave every player the same # of PA (like the RHP/LHP split data noted in the player page), I bet J-Up would do worse.

        @Rudy Gamble:

        Got it. It felt odd to see Upton still producing a PS total of 2.0 and 4.8 in AVG & OBP despite where those ratios are projected to drop to. Of course that might have to do with personally not taking into account how far offensive production has dropped the past 3 years which makes a .268 AVG (gulp) desirable.

        And, for whatever it’s worth, the xBABIP forumla (the one taking speed into account) projects him at .321 – right in line with that preseason projection.

        • @Fish: Note that it isn’t 2 Point Shares in AVG. It’s $2 where $0 is replacement-level. That’s not very good but it’s slightly above the likely replacement. He earns his big bucks in R/HR/RBI.

    All hail, Master of the Excel Spreadsheet…

    Maybe you’ll have the “know-how” on my struggle. I’m trying to set up a web query on Excel from the Fangraphs leaderboard, but I’ve had no luck in getting a complete player list and can only query the first 30 names listed. Do you know of any way to set up a much larger web query (other than selecting each page individually… not even sure that method will work) from Fangraphs?

    • I don’t know any easy way to get a full leaderboard via excel query if the site paginates. I used to use dougstats.com to import stats.

        @Rudy Gamble:

        Bummer… I found a work-around, but it’s tedious as I need to setup 60 individual web queries (ugh). Assuming I can get this done in a reasonable amount of time, it be worth sharing so the effort doesn’t go to waste.

    I did it. I’ve been fiddling with this for well over a week, but it’s at least presentable. I give to you… a fully loaded spreadsheet with web queries set for Fangraphs, Baseball-reference, and Razzball Player Rater. It’s awesome.

    The hardest part in creating it was trouble-shooting the web queries on the Fangraphs page as there wasn’t a way to set up a query of the full leaderboard. Instead, I had to go through and manually set up a web query for each individual team – one for batting and one for pitching… It was not a quite or efficient process… When you hit “refresh all” to update all the data, it’ll take a while to go through the 65 or so queries. Every now and then one might respond with an error message, but I don’t believe there’s a larger underlying problem other than it failed to update on that try. A specific “refresh” on the failed query has done the trick every time I experienced an error.

    I’ve been putzing around putting different formula at the end of each leaderboard that I’ve found to be interesting or highly accurate (the xK% has a R^2 of 92%). Doesn’t mean all of them are awesome, but I wanted to try some things out and see what happened.

    (It probably won’t load on the Google Drive screen, but it can be downloaded from there regardless):

    Rudy,

    I can’t figure out the cause of this problem. I set up a web query for the Player Rater’s ROS stats (Yahoo! 6*6 OBP) in Excel, but the data for players’ values returned differ from what’s on the website. For instance, the Excel query brings back Mike Trout at 495 PA (basically every player is forecasted for more PA than currently projected on the regular website). It appears that it’s pulling older Player Rater data, and not what’s currently projected on the site.

    Any ideas?

    • Hmm, that’s weird. I haven’t changed anything on my end. That sort of query shouldn’t cache. And you’re sure you’ve refreshed it?

        @Rudy Gamble:

        Few day delay… But yes, I am (was?) positive I refreshed. It updated correctly today.

    Looks like there’s a coding error going on. Where the PlayerRater table should be reads:

    nada for: SHOW TABLES LIKE ‘nrs_d_ROSYAHOOMLB12TEAM-6x60BP’

    Hey Rudy – Heyward has been pretty dire thus far, but this ROS Rater still seems to be fairly bullish on him (Top 30 – just!).

    You buying it?

    • I am bearish on Heyward. I believe in the projected AVG/OBP improvement but hard to buy into his power.

    Hi Rudy – any reason why Rizzo doesn’t display as 2b eligible in the Yahoo 6×6 ROS Rater? Keen to know how he’s valued there :-)

    • i’ll add that in manually. doesn’t change his value. the only position adjustment (which is mild) is to catchers. there’s an argument that having multiple position eligibility has some additional value for roster flexibility but I don’t factor that in.

        @Rudy Gamble: Thanks Rudy. I’ve been thinking of maybe trying to trade (my) Schoop for Hosmer and moving Rizzo over to 2B. What do you think of that idea? This is in a 14-team OBP league.

        Hosmer projected to return $14.9 ROS against $8.2 for Schoop. Schoop has more power but Hos has a better AVG which I could use…
