Baseball starts tonight, get psyched! Right now, though, it’s time to focus on what’s important: preseason predictions! Before we dive deep into countless hours rearranging lineups, FAAB bids, and making trade offers in order to win a couple hundred dollars in our friends and family league, which equates to roughly twenty-eight cents per hour, we here at Razzball want to take a moment and document some predictions for the upcoming season. These preseason predictions are a mix of real baseball (MVP, ROY, Cy Young, etc.) and fake baseball (who’s our infatuation; who will return the most value; who will flop). We do this every season, and we haven’t learned any lessons ever, so here it is again! Here is LAST YEAR‘s post if you’re interested. For every correct prediction, there are plenty who thought Cam Smith and Brandon Pfaadt were going to matter…or maybe that was just me.

Without further ado, here are the Razzball staff picks for the upcoming season, along with a few blurbs from the staff on why they made the choices they did. Be sure to let us know your picks down in the comments, put your name on it so we can praise you in October, or look back next year and point and laugh.

Psyche! One further ado, this season’s first Buy/Sell is now available on our Patreon. It will be posted early on the Patreon all year, so sign up for that. Anyway II, the picks:

MattTruss

Kevin McGonigle: “The Professor is here! I don’t care that this might be a homer pick, but Tigers fans have every right to be excited about the #2 prospect in baseball.”

CY YOUNG & MVP

“Yes, an across-the-board sweep of the four major awards going to the 2025 winners is chalky. But these four dudes – Ohtani, Judge, Skubal, Skenes – are all a different class of player from their extremely talented brethren. It’s hard to bet against any of them, as all appear to be penning Hall-of-Fame stories. All four also represent the best active players to spend those card-collecting dollars on to squirrel away for the future.”

Infatuation

Yordan Alvarez: “This guy’s consistency has been incredible, and it’s bizarre to see him fall to pick 40 in most drafts. The Stros slugger struggled to stay healthy last season, but his worst year before that was a .277 AVG and .877 OPS. That’s a fantastic floor throughout a six-year span, and we could see Alvarez earn some MVP votes if he’s able to play a full season.”

Joey Bart

Sleeper

Justin Crawford: “The more drafts I’ve done, the more I watch as Justin Crawford falls down the draft board, much to my delight.  Any team build that needs speed late, this is my guy.  He feels like everything we want out of Jakob Marsee, but 100+ picks later.  Sleepers are hard in this day and age, but Crawford feels like a legit one.  He could lead the league in steals.”

MattTruss

Bust

Nick Kurtz: “This is based on his ADP and the value in return. I think he will have a great season, but I’m hesitant to spend a 2nd round pick on a potential Sophomore Slump.”

Andy_p

Comeback Player

Cody Ponce: “17-1, 1.89 ERA, 180.2 IP, 128 H, 38 ER, 10 HR, 252 Ks!, 0.935 WHIP. That’s a 12.6 K/9 and a 2.0 BB/9. The transition back to the big leagues won’t yield the same results, but the big righty (6’6”, 255 lbs) unlocked another level in the KBO last year and chose the Blue Jays this offseason because liked the news about the clubhouse culture and the good vibes. As if that isn’t enough, Ponce wore 30 last season as a nod to a certain protocol droid (C3PO), and will wear #66 as both an homage to Order #66 from Star Wars as well as op as a nod to former Blue Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu’s #99. That’s an awful lot of checked boxes on the MarmosDad page of “Yes, please”.  Sign me up everywhere!”

Ah boy, I had to trade Gilbert this year bc of keeper limits. Maybe I should have waited for the trade deadline so I’d at least get 1/2 of this Cy Young year. Fuck.

Is Dominguez worth rostering for saves over a bench bat like Lewis or Gimenez?

Chief Grey,

Your picks are so far ahead of the rest that Conner Griffin is not available on Yahoo FB, thank you for being ahead of AI:).

Just a quick hit, I’m thinking of dropping Tovar for McGonigle??? This would be a bench bat.

Sound, sound or to much of a gamble? Thank you again, you are so great that Yahoo doesn’t even try to compete:).

Quick CI question (well more of a 1B question).

Which 2 would you like best for CI slot from this group of third-tier 1B?

Christian Walker
Andrew Vaughn
Jonathan Aranada

I also have Lawlar in my Bench spot as yet another CI option but he’ll qualify for OF soon enough where he probably actually has more value.

Leaning towards Vaughn since Walker is just boring with no upside.

Yeah, with Barger’s downside being a possible platoon, I drafted Bohm as a warm body for days when Barger sits. I just added Lewis last night (dropping Akin)–he was drafted ahead of Bohm but was dropped. So yeah, I could let Bohm go and just consider Lewis my backup 3B.

With my IL guys officially able to be moved to the IL today, I can add 3 more players. If I also drop Bohm, that’s a 4th. Think I’ll try to add Baz via FAAB, among others.

Was so much Fun to Draft Matt McLain last night in the last RCL draft at pick 80. I think I may have tilted B_Don. In my defense if he wanted him he should have taken him over Keaschall. Probably my bust pick for this year…..hasn’t proven health, doesn’t hit the ball hard and plays for a terrible team….over under on how many games it takes for Chase Delaughter to break his foot again?

Hey Grey, many thanks for all the help with draft prep season yet again! We draft on Saturday (better late than never!(.

For context, we have three RP slots in an 11 team roto league (traditional except adding SLG%) with limited waivers (limited in the sense that we get five free ones, then have to pay $5 per). Rosters run 42 players deep including some prospects as well as pretty deep benches (no IL spots).

What would be your general RP strategy in a league like this?

Trade question. Kinda apples/oranges I get it but…

I got offered Leiter for Burleson. Evaluator is a landslide for Burleson.
For me Burleson is a back up for Naylor and CI (Barger and Noelvi are currently 3B and CI). I’m rostering Mayo but that’s a stretch unless spring numbers mean he’s changed.
Deep league so not much on waivers.
Is Leiter’s sleeper/upside better overall than the boring predictability of Burleson?

OaktownSteve
OaktownSteve

Mornin’! Hope you all will indulge me in the fantasy that I know something and pretend it’s of interest as I present a few 2026 bold predictions:

Chase Delauater is AL Rookie of the Year and a top 25 OF. Spring results don’t matter but some of the stuff under the hood does. Spring average exit velo 94.2 would been top 6 in baseball between Schwarber and Soto. 115.3 max exit top 30 last year. Pretty much walked more than he struck out every level. And he’s frickin’ huge, by the way. 28 hrs, .280 average and 180 RuBis.

Mike Burrows is top 25 starter.  He’s checking all the boxes. Moved from Pirates to the Astros, added a sinker, velo at 98, command showing improvement in the spring. Slotted number two in their rotation. No innings limitations. All arrows up. ERA in the low 3’s, whip under 1.100, 185 ks.  And to spice it up, is higher on the player rater than Hunter Brown.

Daulton Varsho hits 40+ home runs. He has been crushing the ball going back to last year. Hit home runs at the same rate as Ohtani on a per plate appearance basis. His bat speed of 75.6 was in the top 20 for all of baseball. Watched him hang in and take a running Weathers fastball out to left down in Florida. All looks legit.

Cole Young is a top 10 2b. He demolished a 473 foot home run this spring and flashed a little power last year as well. Great discipline throughout the minors. Got a solid cup of coffee last year to taste the majors. Has shown enough speed to maybe be a 10-15 steal guy. 15 homers with upside possible as he develops. Batting average should be a plus. Plays every day and might even end up hitting lead off for them.

Geraldo Perdomo is the same guy he was last year. Doesn’t seem bold but every single analyst I’ve seem is screaming for regression and putting him on the don’t draft lists. I think he’s right on the cusp of becoming a superstar. Few control the plate better. He’s a big dude and the power is real. I’ll embolden the pick and say he hits a couple more
home runs and couple more steals and he actually improves on last year.

Mookie Betts: NL MVP. Spring exit velo back to 2023 level.   Gold glove shortstop. 200 RuBis in the heart of the best line up maybe ever. Return to 30 home runs. Plenty of reasons to attribute 24/25 seasons to injury & illness rather than decline. He closed 2025 strong and is super motivated. And Grey wrote a Schmohawk?! Hell hath no fury like a Mookie scorned.

So in order to build excitement for the sport of professional baseball in the US, Rob “It’s Just A Piece of Metal” Manfred restricts the Opening Day broadcast to only those few willing to pay for a NFLX subscription.

Brilliant move, a**hat. Nothing like preventing baseball fans from watching the opening day game.

I hate things like this so much! I used to have cable TV like back in the day but then the Sportsnet goobers decided you need to pay extra for a separate channel to watch a bunch of Toronto sports games… That’s when I became a Pittsburgh Pirate brotherman. Just be as cheap as that organization and be a pirate Mr Will!

Yeah I waited too long on the pitching and just didn’t draft well when I started picking… any suggestions on trades? Is it worth moving Joe Ryan (despite him being my pseudo #1) for Bradish and Lodolo?

Need you to tell me your a believer of sal stewart.

I traded Jazz and michael busch for matt shaw and corbin carrol.

I am going to promote sal stewart from my minors to replace busch.

Or you can tell me it was a mistake lol.

Am I being too cute too early (Week 1)? Thinking of starting Sal Stewart with 6 games at GAB > Busch. Seems Busch is slated to face 4 LHP of his 9 game schedule. I know Busch is tentatively scheduled to face more LHP instead of being platooned. However he still hasn’t proved he can hit them yet.

Popeye is such a better Nickname for McGonigle than the professor or Magoo. His forearms are literally Popeye sized…got him in 5-6 RCLs let Truss have him in one because I felt generous…..6-6 on Sal Stewart and Connelly Early. LFG!

When keeping it real goes wrong… you end up with 3 catchers and overpaying for pitching because you tried to drive bids up and got stuck. And then you get stuck with $1 players at half your positions.
12 team auction 5×5, keep as many as you like with $5 inflation. Clearly I can trade some pitching for hitting but… any specifics?

C- Smith $7
1b- Burger $2
2b- Keith $1
3b- Machado $23
SS- Wilson- $15 (K)
CI- Caballero $6 (K)
MI- Adames $10
OF1- PCA $13 (K)
OF2- Duran $20 (K)
OF3- Pages $9
OF4- Cruz $10
OF5- Crews $1
Util- Schwarber $25
B1- Ag. Ramirez $3
B2- E. Diaz $3
B3- W Castro $1
B4- Shaw $1
B5- Jung $3

P1- Yamamoto $23 (K)
P2- deGrom $11 (K)
P3- Kirby $15 (K)
P4- Imanaga $15 (K)
P5- Sheehan $9
P6- Castillo $3
P7- Jansen $11 (K)
P8- Iglesias $8
P9- Estevez $8
B6- Peterson $1
B7- G Holmes $1
B8- Wallner $1

Happy Opening Day! I look forward to Tyler O’neill’s HR tomorrow.

Is Senga still far below Wheeler for you right now like he is in your rankings?

Still exploring a trade for my $20 Stowers based on the very real worries you mentioned about it lingering. Unfortunately only bites would be for injury prone Trout or Delauter.

If I pair Stowers with Senga, I can get Trout and $1 Jesus Made (interesting in this keep forever – Itch thinks he debuts this year and has him #1). I know we didn’t like that for Stowers + Wheeler but not sure if Stowers/Senga looks better to you…

Thoughts?

very true – I feel like Wheeler is here to stay once he’s back (esp knowing he’s retiring after his contract, no reason not to go all out), senga harder to predict.

would you do that move in a keeper? $20 Stowers and Senga to get Trout plus $1 Jesus Made?

Hey to the Hey, Grey!!! And happy start to the 2026 season!!!

That list of rookies is juicy nom, nom. Could you rank McGonigle, Ballesteros, and J. Crawford—they’re all available to me and on starting rosters. And would you roster them at the expense of Wallner or Spinach Canzone?

Hey Grey,

1. Best stash for redraft head to head OBP league – Jesus made, Jenkins, max clark?

2. Is Varland a notable upgrade over Raley or Vodnik who are my bottom two relievers in league that has SOLDS as single category

3. In same league – is Canzone a better bend bat to have over Beck? Who prefer someone who would help me with power and OBP

4. Abel or Jacob Lopez for my last Sp in league that does k/9

Thanks as always

Grey, had a last minute 12 team classic 5×5 Roto draft last night. It went very weirdly and I got caught on a few positional runs. Ended up with a stacked outfield but that’s where the value kept being. Light on saves and steals so it’s SAGNOF season!! How we lookin?

Batters
C: S. Basallo
1B: A. Burleson
2B: O. Albies
3B: A. Riley
SS: C. Abrams
OF: A. Judge
OF: K. Schwarber
OF: Y. Alvarez
UTIL: W. Langford
UTIL: S. Stewart

Bench (Hitters)
J. Caballero

Pitchers

SP: T. Glasnow
RP: J. Hoffman
RP: G. Jax
P: C. Schlittler
P: R. Ray
P: C. Early
P: J. Estrada
Bench: W. Warren, C. Holmes, J. Leiter

Also have two Bench IL stashes that once they actually go on IL it will open up some waiver claim spots – managed to get these guys in the last few rounds so no cost:

S. Strider
B. Miller

Should I prioritize some bullpen guys to sneak saves? Streamonator starters?

Happy “opening day” kind of not really but really.

In a dynasty league you ok sending off: Jett Williams/Josh Smith and Hunter Goodman for Maikel Garcia and Victor Scott?

I need a 2B

I could also throw in Josh Jung instead of Josh Smith but I think I prefer to keep Jung.

Thanks!

Any interest for anyone joining a Yahoo league that will draft later in the week, likely Thursday evening?
We had a couple guys bail out the last minute and looking to fill their spots. 12 team H2H categories 10×10, daily lineup changes up to 6 transactions per week and 90 max for the year.
Auction draft, allowed to keep up to 3 players from previous seasons roster, keepers increase in value 20% from previous seasons drafted price.

$100 buy in, money goes back to top 3 finishers and money also gets paid out to winners of weekly matchups. Any questions or if anyone would like to join my email is [email protected].

Totally got caught on 2 OF runs. I will put Wheeler on the shelf and use that slot for Leiter. Burrows looks like he gets a nice matchup vs Angels this week. Might grab him for Boagerts. I like Ryne but draws the Dodgers right out of the gate. Ponce? So much fun
