Yesterday, Reid Detmers went 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 12 Ks, ERA at 3.62, as he threw an immaculate inning. Ya know what? There’s a lotta immaculate innings this year. I bet Rob Manfred has them using an immaculate inning ball. Detmers now has two huge starts this year (he no-hit the Rays earlier in the year) built around a rough patch, surrounding a demotion that was tagged “Fixer-upper,” and upper he fixer’d. Since he was recalled from his demotion, he’s been essentially lights-out (24 IP, 3 ER, 31 Ks). There was 9 BBs in those 24 IP, which is still a concern, but he looks like he’s on the standard path of ugly rookie year (last year), up-and-down year two (that’s right now) and next year will be the real breakout. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Dylan Cease – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 2.01. “Gerrit ColeZack WheelerMax ScherzerCorbin Burnes and other (top pitchers). Next year at this time, it won’t seem out of place when mentioning Dylan Cease in that class.” That’s me quoting me from my Dylan Cease sleeper this past December! He’s allowed four earned runs in his last 12 starts in, just, oh, ya know, 70 IP. Dylan Cease’s ERA over the last 12 starts: 0.51. That seems pretty good. In July, Cease gave up 3 ER in 35 2/3 IP. Call him Dylanius Caesar. His mustache should have its own true crime documentary series on Netflix. Call it Making of A Mustache. He’s not getting by on smoke and mirrors; this is all real, certifiable butter. He be Dealin’ Cease. He’s at once both Big Poppa and Lil’ Cease.

Eloy Jimenez – 1-for-3 and his 5th homer, and was replaced defensively later in the game, which is what I want to believe, but I’m sure I will wake up on Monday to hear Eloy’s hammy was left in the wash too long and tightened up.

Paul Blackburn – 5 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 4.15. If you held onto Blackburn after he got absolutely hosed last time out like an extra at Backdraft: The Ride, then your bravery (nuttiness?) was rewarded.

Ramon Laureano – 2-for-3 and his 11th homer. While rounding the bases, Laureano carried a sign that read, “1-888-Trade-Me.”

Alek Manoah – Said to be feeling better after taking a comebacker off his elbow. I tend to believe him. He’s a big, beefy boy and he can rub some dirt on it and walk it off. Um, you don’t walk on your elbows…He can army crawl it off.

Ross Stripling – 4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.6. This was the episode titled, “The One Where Ross Doesn’t Go Five Against A Terrible Team.” Streamonator doesn’t like his next, but I don’t feel as much hatred.

Matt Chapman – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 20th homer, and 4th homer in the last four games, and it was a mere week ago I opined whether Chapman and Olson were really that different, and it’s this week I’m finding out what “opine” means.

Jose Berrios – 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.96. This start was against the Tigers, who don’t roar, but instead yawn. Let’s see Berrios do it against someone decent.

Javier Baez – 1-for-3 and his 10th homer. This home run came off Jose Berrios, his brother-in-law, which makes me think it was like when I was in an 0-for-25 slide in Pee-Wee leagues, and my friend, the Stagecoach (not real name), threw me a meatball to bust me out of the slump. Not totally joking either. One of the number one things pitchers have going for them is the ability to make the hitter uncomfortable. If you stepped in the box and knew there was no chance you’d get hit, you’d dig in and not move. Here’s a prime example of that:

Eduardo Rodriguez – Reported to the Tigers’ spring training facility. Hate to be in his family if you have a April-July birthday. Dude thinks it’s March reporting to Spring Training! Eduardo, “What are you doing for Cinco de Mayo?” You, “Ed-Rod, it’s August, bro!”

Chris Martin – Traded to the Dodgers. Now when he sees the celebrities in the front row of Dodger Stadium, he can serenade Jason Bateman with, “Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.” Seems a bit convoluted to make this trade for Chris Martin. The Dodgers could’ve just told Gwyneth Paltrow she was not welcome at games.

James Outman – 3-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 1st major league homer in his 1st major league at-bat. Outman sounds like a misnomer. Unless, of course, his middle name is Hitit.

Edmundo Sosa – Acquired by the Phils for JoJo Romero. Would’ve liked to see Sosa traded to the Cubs, and reunited with his 1990s skin tone.

Kyle Schwarber – 1-for-5 and his 33rd homer, hitting .204. The 61st of June and he’s still going!

Alec Bohm – 4-for-5, 3 runs and his 7th homer, a triple short of the cycle. Don’t look now but Bohm hit .410 in July with multiple hits in seven of his past eight games, and he was in Friday’s Buy.

Ranger Suarez – 6 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 3.60. During my Covid-induced brainfog, I had a moment of clarity. Ranger Suarez might not have built off his huge 2nd half last year into this year, but he might just a 2nd half pitcher.

Paul DeJong – 1-for-4 and his third homer, and he homered on Saturday, as he was recalled. Colonel Mustard hitting behind Nootbar’s whole-grain ass, so you know there won’t be any Grey poop-on’ing! Also, what’s good on a schmotato? Mustard!

Andre Pallante – 8 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 3.18. Cards don’t have real players — they have figments of their imagination that they conjure into reality. He’s a 6.5-ish K/9, 3 BB/9 poof of make-believe.

Kenley Jansen – 1 IP, 0 ER, ERA at 3.43. Felt his back twinge on Friday, while simultaneously saying “twinge” like Wayne and Garth, but seems to be fine.

Anthony Rizzo – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 25th homer. HR to the Izzo!

Jordan Montgomery – 4 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 3.69. Welp, he sucks now. He goes to St. Louis next, and I can’t say I have any positive vibes flowing down my Z. Cavariccis that makes me want to start him.

DJ LeMahieu – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 11th homer, 2nd homer in two games, and hitting leadoff again, as the Yanks took three days to stumble on the question, “Why did we trade for Benintendi?”

Clay Holmes – 2/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 1.77, and the blown save. Should’ve known better than to trust anyone who is a synonym with wigwam. He was so automatic in the first few months, and since, well, sigh. Aroldis hasn’t been much better, though, but the Yankees might make a move.

Salvador Perez – 1-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 13th homer, and 2nd homer since he returned. Sal P.’s playing like he wants to get to 25 homers with only two months left.

Bobby Witt Jr. – Left yesterday game after being hit by another pitch. Are we sure he’s not Craig Biggio Jr.?

Jurickson Profar – 2-for-4, 2 runs and a slam (11) and legs (5). Every year one guy emerges above the fray to reach for the “Deep league guy that is super valuable, but you don’t really want him in shallower leagues” chalice. This year Profar’s looking to take that ornate cup.

Sean Manaea – 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.25. At this point, I have no faith in Manaea, and Streamonator loved this start of his, and hates his next, which is enough for me.

Luis Garcia – 1 IP, 0 ER, ERA at 3.23, and the save. Taylor Rogers who? Oh, he was the Padres’ closer, but he was really bad. It’s a figure of speech, Random Italicized Voice. “Taylor Rogers who?” doesn’t sound like a figure of speech. So, the Year of Luis Garcia just got a little more Luis Garcia’ier for Padres saves, but let’s see if the Padres trade for a reliever.

Jose Miranda – 1-for-4 and his 10th homer, and 2nd homer in four games, and he was in Friday’s Buy column, as I gave you the rights to Miranda.

Jake Odorizzi – 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 3.75. Did a little stream action on Sunday with Odorizzi, and Streamonator hates his next start, so I will drop him. Bye-bye.

George Kirby – 4 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.56. As I kinda said after his last start, he won’t be pitching deep enough to roster. And that’s me paraphrasing me!

Julio Rodriguez – Hit the IL with a swollen wrist after taking a pitch off it. Why can’t we have anything nice? WHY?! Send me a sign, Lord! *lowers head, sees a mural of Jesus Aguilar, looks back up* Any sign whatsoever!

Jarred Kelenic – 0-for-3, 2 Ks. as he was promoted back to the majors. In the minors, he didn’t seem to fix anything. It would be nice if the minor leagues didn’t allow high BABIPs, so hitters had to earn their high, or in Jarred’s case decent (.288), averages. He was striking out nearly 24% of the time in Triple-A, and, well, I looked at him on waivers, and grabbed him in a league or two, but not everywhere. Also, about the Luis Castillo trade from our Youtube channel:

Freddy Peralta – Next appearance will be in the majors. Notice how I said “appearance” and not “start.” Wait a minute, Simon didn’t say notice it! So, it sounds like after you held Peralta for months, he might return as a reliever. Stay tuned. Or not! Your choice.

Aaron Ashby – 4 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 5 unearned runs (ticker shock!), ERA at 4.13. I’m not going to tell Craig Counsell how to hold a bat or how to manage a team, but Ashby should be in the pen and Peralta back in the rotation.

Hunter Renfroe – 4-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 19th homer, and 2nd homer in as many games, and third homer in five games, and basically carrying all my teams in power for the last two weeks. As Scooby Doo would say, “Renfroe!”

Ian Anderson – 6 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, 1 walk, 9 Ks, ERA at 4.99. Where the living eff was, brief pause for emphasis, that all year?!

Merrill Kelly – 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 2.87. Just gave you my Merrill Kelly fantasy. Don’t make me cranky and repeat myself.

Tyler Mahle – 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.40. A’la the Foo Fighters, “There goes my hero…watch him as he goes!” That’s Mahle watching Castillo get the hell off the Reds.

Nick Lodolo – 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.23. Lodolo is YOLO, but Hunter Greene is way more YOLO than Lodolo. Don’t need to be in Georgia to kapeesh that.

Anthony Santander – 3-for-4 and his 19th homer, and his 2nd homer in three games. Dude’s gonna finish with 30 homers and no one will draft him next year.

Sonny Gray – 5 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.41. Ya know what’s super annoying that is never mentioned? I have to go to search for injuries every single time a pitcher throws less than 80 pitches, only to find the manager just pulled him early. Going on eBay to buy the world’s smallest violin so I can play it only for myself.

Carlos Carrasco – 7 2/3 IP,  0 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 3.79. Since about the point when he ended June with a 6.37 ERA is about the time when I said you needed to move on. Since then, he’s had 0.90 ERA in 30 IP, and 18 2/3 IP scoreless. Um, oops?

Pablo Lopez – 2 2/3IP, 6 ER, ERA at 3.41. Aw, how cute, he doesn’t want to be traded.

Charles Leblanc – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 1st major league homer. TBS had scheduled Friends repeats during this game. Kill two birds, I guess. LeBlanc is playing third, would’ve been funnier if they got a monkey. He had a line of 14/6/.302 in 87 Triple-A games, but he’s old and likely a Quad-A player. An NL-Only league hella fella, maybe nothing more.

Josh Lowe – Optioned to the minors. Is this a thing: Everything about the Rays is viewed with rose-colored glasses, so people get excited about guys where you shouldn’t be excited. Therefore, take everything “great said about them” and subtract “a decent chance” and then do the math, which is…”okay, I guess?” Did I forget to carry a “hyperbole?”

Shane McClanahan – 4 1/3 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 2.07. First time he gave up more than three earned this year was yesterday to the Guardians, i.e. court-appointed Guardians are Shane’s Daddy.

David Peralta – Traded to the Rays, where he will become a Hall of Fame-caliber middle reliever. David Peralta is gonna fit right in with the Rays. He’s 34, and he’s only been paid once in his entire career, and that was a 5th outfielder’s salary while he got second outfielder playing time. That park sucks, and the lineup is about as bad in Tampa as Arizona. Overall, went from meh to more meh.

Carlos Rodon – 7 IP, 0 ER, 2 hits, zero walks, 10 Ks, ERA at 3.00. “Welcome to Toronto, Mr. Rodon, may I interest you in a Tim Horton’s?” This is a quote from the future.

Zach McKinstry – Went the other way in the Chris Martin trade to the Cubs. McKinstry might see time in the outfield, but is only a very deep league option, i.e., from Coldplay to could play.

Hi Grey,

I need holds this week, drop vesia or loaisaga for mantiply?

I already picked up givens and have Phillips from lad.

Dodgers and Yankees both traded for relievers, and I don’t know what to make of the Yankees bullpen.

My gut says maybe I should wait until after the trade deadline.

Thoughts?

happens every year, early the in season just grab the best RP’ers, they usually work their way into at least holds, if not saves later. i’m glad l.garcia is back for holds, notta so happy on t.rogers in 2/3 of the spots i have him, which just happened to be my only saves only spots. the other one he was too good to drop preseason and back then i wanted holds from him so happy now.

could’ve easily been him rounding to make sure it wasn’t zero%. like when you see “ownership %’s” on leagues say 0%, it usually isn’t but they’re rounding down. more than none isn’t 0% and it’s possible he gets at least one save so 0% wouldn’t be an appropriate answer.

Stick with Finnegan as a second closer, or try Puk (maybe he closes with Trivino gone) or Whitlock (might still be behind Houck)? Saves only, no holds. Thank you.

Already out of contention.

Would you give Ohtani for Julio Rodriguez plus a high pick or Luis Robert plus a high pick?

Which one you prefer for 2023?

Would you do both options nevertheless in case the other team doesnt want.

One more Q: Who to drop when Robert is activated: Ward, McCutchen, or Kwan? Points league where Ks -1. For perspective, the points per game for these three over the past 30 days has been 1.1, 2.5, and 2.6, respectively.

Hi Grey,

Bader($8) was just dropped in my league. Would you rather stash him or Rios($4) on the IL once Segura is back? Also, if Colonel Mustard continues to be a hot schmotato when Segura gets activated, would you drop Alek Thomas and ride it, or do you think ROS Thomas is worth the bench spot over DeJong? This, of course, is dependent on the possibility of Quintana, Mahle, Finnegan, and Melancon getting traded to the AL in which I’d have a spot open.

at least l.garcia (SD) is back to why i added him across most spots, holds. t.rogers is in better shape i’d think for saves in MIL than if he stayed at SD and they traded for K-rob. but still seems a drop in saves only leagues, for which of these: whitlock, puk, fairbanks, j.hernandez (still looks like barlow is back shortly for that though, who i have already in IR slot), strickland or the more deserving a.diaz?

In a 10 team keeper league, 5×5 with OPS and QS instead of the obvious.

Was just offered Betts, Gimenez, Laureano and Romano for Ohtani ($16 keeper). Should I pull the trigger. I’d be dropping A. Rosario, Winker and Graveman to slot the other 3 into my team. Seems a little light given his keeper value probably but I’m currently in 3rd place and need a boost for this year if I want to win.

I’m also talking Acuna, Altuve, Wheeler, Bednar with someone, which I like a lot more

Technically everyone can be a keeper but I don’t think any of them have any value outside of Wheeler who is keepable for $18, which I forgot about

The Acuna/Wheeler deal is better but I dunno if he will go for it and the other deal is 100% on the table

Betts – $43
Romano – $19
Laureano – $8
Gimenez – $8
This deal is also talking Gonsolin who is $8 keeper

Other deal would be:
Acuna – $50
Altuve – $21
Wheeler – $18
Bednar – $11
This deal is also talking Springer who would be $25 keeper

OF NOTE: The highest priced guy last year at draft was Soto who was bought for $50. Only 6 guys went above $40

Ya the second deal is likely much better, but he seems very 50/50 on it where the other option has been offered. I asked the 1st guy (Betts deal) to wait a day or so and he agreed. Not sure if I should take that though if the Acuna deal falls thru

Betts – $43
Romano – $19
Laureano – $8
Gimenez – $8

for Ohtani – $16

Then I would drop a $12 Graveman, a $10 Winker and a $9 A. Rosario

Hey Grey,

Big block buster with Hader.

1) do you think Taylor Rogers takes over as closer in MIL?

2) What’s the order of dropping these guys? Manaea, eovaldi, springs

Thanks!

Hi. 12-team 5×5 redraft league. Looking for starters for the week.

1) SON doesn’t really like the following guys. Can you rank them?
Ranger Suarez vWSH (3.9)
Braxton G. vCIN (-1.8)
Pivetta @KC (-4.8)
SonnyG vTOR (-11.3)

2) Start or sit those guys in my league?

3) I need K’s. The following 2-starters are available:
Archer (vDET -6.5 and vTOR -28.7)
Lyles (@TEX -7.4 and vTOR -18.9)
Steele (@STL -19.3 and vWSH -6.1)

SON hates them all. Start any over the guys listed in #1 above?

Thank you.

Yep. I get it. But for a points league, if Devin ends up closing for the Brewers, does he move ahead of anyone on this list?

Rogers was dropped in my 12-teamer. Scooping over Robertson, Lopez, Sewald or Bednar?

1. Out of these available hitters who are your top choices?
Available hitters: Jean Segura, Kyle Lewis, Jarred Kelenic, Nolan Gorman, Seth Brown, Aledmys Diaz, Oneil Cruz, Trayce Thompson, Kyle Isbel, Joey Votto, Alec Bohm, Yuli Gurriel, Eddie Rosario, Patrick Wisdom, Isaac Paredes, Luis Rengifo, Luke Voit

2. How good do you expect Mitch Haniger to be? Top 20 outfielder rest of season i think is within the realm of possibility

3. Essentially same question but for Alex Cobb, how good do you project him to be? I looked at his statcast and was shocked, the guy has the makings of a verifiable ace, but he’s just been rocked for no reason at all?

Josh Lowe was tough. I was going to bring him up from my minors today.

He has been hitting the ball very well since the allstar break and a week prior.

I was hoping he would help me, now I have nothing as I am now stuck without an offensive weapon I needed to win I feel.

That Hader deal was a surprise. Not sure how to value rogers going forward. Do you like him or munoz better ros in a saves+holds format? Rogers has struggled but still has a much better fip than his era. He hasn’t been great but also has been unlucky.

12-team, 3-OF roto, dead last in most pitching categories and have a bunch of OF (Gurriel, Alvarez, Jimenez, Happ, Suzuki). Ok to trade Jimenez for Mahle or just too unbalanced?

Hi Grey,

1. yes, that is a tear in my eye. i started Lopez and was – 26. His next start is at the Cubs. would you start him?

2. to increase my flexibility, i was thinking of picking up Aledyms Diaz of Houston who can play multiple positions and cutting Michael Harris II. just not sure. what would you do? Another possibility is picking up Diaz and cutting Jeffery Springs? of course. i can just hold.

Thoughts?

thanks!

As you can see, I had a pretty calamitous draft, despite good intentions.

NO. PLAYER ROUND
7 Mike Trout LAA, CF K
19 Matt Olson Atl, 1B K
31 Trevor Story Bos, SS K
43 Freddy Peralta Mil, SP 4
55 Tyler O’Neill StL, LF 5
66 Eloy Jimenez ChW, LF 6
79 Jonathan India Cin, 2B 7
90 Adalberto Mondesi KC, 3B 8
103 Sean Manaea SD, SP 9
114 Aroldis Chapman NYY, RP 10
127 Franmil Reyes Cle, DH 11
138 Jarred Kelenic Sea, CF 12
151 Taylor Rogers SD, RP 13
162 Adolis Garcia Tex, CF 14
175 Tanner Houck Bos, SP 15
186 Paul Sewald Sea, RP 16
199 Logan Gilbert Sea, SP 17
210 Jesus Sanchez Mia, RF 18
223 Jordan Montgomery NYY, SP 19
234 Jeimer Candelario Det, 3B 20
247 Sean Murphy Oak, C 21

I need to win out in this H2H league to have any chance to make the playoffs. At this point, would you just stream instead of rostering JoMo and Manaea?

Current roaster:

C MJ Melendez
1B Matt Olson
2B Jonathan India
3B Eugenio Suarez
SS Dansby Swanson
LF Eloy Jimenez
CF Tommy Pham
RF Adolis Garcia
UT Jose Miranda
UT Rowdy Tellez
B Tyler O’Neill
IL Mike Trout
IL Trevor Story
IL Freddy Peralta

P Anthony Munoz
SP Jorge Lopez
SP Garrett Whitlock
SP Tanner Houck
RP Evan Phillips
RP Felix Bautista
B Sean Manaea
B Taylor Rogers
B Logan Gilbert
B Jordan Montgomery
B Spencer Strider
B Christian Javier

It’s a daily SVHD league so I’ve been playing as many eligible relievers as I can and rotating in starters for relievers as warranted on a day to day basis.

Thanks for any thoughts!

12 teams. Guys I could potentially stream are like Singer, Sandoval, Greene, Taillon, Wood, Cobb. Soon to return guys such as May and Luzardo are also available.

Any bonus thoughts on Houck? Seems like he’s either running out of gas or guys are figuring him out? Deadline moves notwithstanding Whitlock looks like the guy to own in that bullpen, but do you think Houck is even worth rostering in a SVHD league as it stands?

Should have mentioned Schreiber is also rostered when it comes to the guys to own in the Boston BP, just not by me.

Morning Grey,
I need to drop a couple of guys to get my lineup in order in my 12 team H2H league.

I have to drop a SP to get kelenic out of my N/A slot.
based on the last month, EOVALDI, LYNN, MANAEA and HEANEY are the top candidates. They’ve all given me various degrees of headache lately. The good news is that I have a healthy lead in first place so can afford to wait some of these guys out until they get back on track.

Then I have to decide whether or not to keep KELENIC and K.WONG as my 2 UTIL players. It is a keeper league but we only keep 10 and so far Kelenic hasn’t been close to being worth keeping
Available players
PROFAR
SANTANDER
KWAN
D.CARLSON
VOTTO
VOIT
I apologize for the poor grammar as I’m still pretty jet lagged

I should mention that I have Kirby as well. Looks like they are going to cut his innings the rest of the season. Love him as a keeper but don’t know that he would be worth keeping since we only keep 10

I Will drop KELENIC for santander. Guessing that you still like WONG(no judgements here)
I’m going to give EOVALDI one more start(on my bench)tonight to see if he shows any progress. Curious which pitcher you would let go next out of MANAEA, LYNN, KIRBY, HEANEY.

Welp, guess it’s safe to cut Taylor Rogers in all leagues, huh?

I mean, unless somehow MIL makes him their closer over WIlliams (unlikely)… sigh…

oh no grey, we’ve apparently been graced by whoever actually makes those MIL decisions, somebody in here was SURE of it being d-will, so clearly has to be that guy, well that or somebody needs to check what “sure” means. hmmm. maybe that 2nd thing is more likely.
