Eleven years ago, I wrote, “The Rockies made official what seemed inevitable for the last week, Trevor Story will be the starting shortstop in Colorado. As a visiting dignitary gets a key to the city, Story earned the shortstop job and was handed one of Tulo’s old hamstrings. ‘May your hamstrings stay forever young.’ That’s Rod Stewart doing the honors.” And that’s me quoting me! Why recap that? Because Trevor Story then hit four homers in his first three games of his career like Chase DeLauter accomplished on Saturday (1-for-3 yesterday). Eleven years ago and a few days later (I sound like a malfunctioning Abe Lincoln in the Hall of Presidents), I wrote, “The last Story with this many dongs and cruelty to the mound was Fifty Shades of Me.” And that’s me cracking myself up over a decade later! Hold on, someone’s calling me back on my phone. “Hello? Yes, I called and left a message. So, can I go back to the preseason and move DeLauter up to the top five overall? No? Why, retired DeLorean car dealer? Because you haven’t sold DeLoreans for 40 years? Oh.” Chase DePitcher, as he’s commonly referred to in my mind, has been getting praise from me for years now. He’s also had terrible injury luck. Is it luck or does he have proclivity for injuries? By the way, you can’t say proclivity aloud without sounding like Dr. Evil. He battled foot issues for years. The fractured foot was a foot he had surgery on twice before. I don’t know what’s up with his tootsies, but if they ever stage an adaption of My Left Foot, I have suggestion for the Daniel Day Lewis part. So, what do we have left (foot? No, remaining, you dolt!) to discuss here? He has no speed, big power, could hit .300 and the Guards are gonna ride him as long as he can foot the bill. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:
Joey Cantillo – 3 2/3 IP, 2 ER. Good news is he was able to throw 91 pitches. Bad news is he didn’t know where half of them were going.
Slade Cecconi – 4 1/3 IP, 6 ER. Can’t believe the official scorer charged Cecconi with any of those 4th inning runs. In left field, CJ Doofus (got his ass!) slid and bobbled the ball that should’ve been easily caught.
Luke Raley – 1-for-4 and his 3rd homer on Saturday. Hot schmotato alert! [Raley taps his head for the ABS] Hold on, Raley is saying he’s actually just a good hitter and not just a temporarily hot hitter. [stadium waits] Appeal overturned, Grey’s right! Raley is a hot schmotato.
Brendan Donovan – 2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 2nd homer. BDon going to the Pacific Northwest and becoming a 40-homer hitter.
Emerson Hancock – 6 IP, 0 ER, 0 hits, 1 walk, 9 Ks. Yes, I picked him up everywhere I had room. Call me Emerson Hancock Palmer because I got my grubby mitts on him! His velo was up all spring and, if you saw Sunday’s game, his sweeper is no joke. It’s not just that one pitch. It’s no joke everything about Hancock looks legit. Actually, that sounds wrong, but he has unlocked something, and he has excellent command so even if things go bad, he should be safe. 100% all-in.
Andrew Vaughn – Hit the IL with a hamate fracture in his left hand. Brewers with a handpocalypse! That’s too bad–Hold the phone! The top catcher prospect Jeferson Quero was called up! Itch said, “William Contreras, under contract through 2028, is a good enough hitter to DH when he’s not catching, so maybe that’ll be a non-issue, but it caps Quero’s short-term upside enough that I wouldn’t be buying at the moment. The Brewers do a good job emphasizing the value of minimizing strikeouts from top to bottom, and Quero struck out just 14 percent of the time in 58 Triple-A games this season, slashing .255/.336/.412 with six home runs and two stolen bases. He’s a solid defensive catcher with good contact skills and enough power to make pitchers pay for mistakes, so he’s going to have a major league career, but he’s probably got more real world value than fantasy value. Anyway, back to throwing darts at pics of Grey.” What? Quero likely just provides flexibility for Gary Sanchez to play 1st (who hit his 1st homer on Sunday, then left the game for Yelich who homered too) and let Quero act as backup catcher. Jeferson played yesterday (0-for-1, replaced after starter exited) as he only faced a lefty. Yo quiero Quero? In NL-Only and maybe deep two-catcher, but otherwise, the playing time doesn’t seem great.
Brandon Sproat – 3 IP, 7 ER. [dons a potato sack and wanders into the freeway] Why are they beeping at me? I can’t feel things anymore or understand my basic surroundings after this Sproat start. Listen, I think it’s important to have patience in the early going, but when you give up a seven spot to the White Sox in three innings, then you don’t have to go home, but you have to get the eff off my fantasy team, you jerk!
Everson Pereira – 2-for-4 and his 1st homer. Singing his name to Everlong, and his homers are Boo Fighters.
Munetaka Murakami – 1-for-4, 2 runs and his 3rd homer in three games. Imma let you finish DeLauter, but Murakami’s going Big Dong. It’s now four guys who have hit three homers in their 1st three games and two were this year (Murakami and DeLauter). Think what we’re going to find is where Austin Riley was going in drafts, it should’ve been Murakami.
Colson Montgomery – 2-for-3, 5 RBIs and his 1st homer. What I’m mostly interested with Colson is his K%. It’s too early though for that.
Seranthony Dominguez – 1/3 IP, 2 ER. “Seranthony is underrated!” Three days into the season, “Maybe I should pick up AJ Blubaugh for middle relief.”
Michael McGreevy – 6 IP, 0 ER, 0 hits, 2 walks, 5 Ks. If I had just gone into all my drafts only going after emcees, like a music video thot, I’d have McGreevy and McGonigle and be McLovin’ it! Streamonator actually loved McGreevy on Saturday, and is positive for his next start, so I could see giving him a whirl.
Jordan Walker – 3-for-4, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and his 1st homer. What a great sign, assuming he didn’t hit the ball directly into the dirt and then it bounced 500 feet straight into the air while he rounded the bases.
Joe Boyle – 6 IP, 2 ER, 3 hits, zero walks, 4 Ks. Don’t fully trust Boyle, because of his command, but “zero walks” has me sitting up in my high chair going gaga.
Dylan Cease – 5 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 12 Ks, vs. the A’s, who I might start calling the K’s, because, and this is going to be very obvious once I explain it, they strikeout a lot. I do expect Ks from Cease, but that the Jays had back-to-back starters record 11+Ks for the 1st time in franchise history confirms how it was the Jays vs. K’s. (By the way, the L’s were in Miami, but not the Marlins.)
Eric Lauer – 5 1/4 IP, 2 Er, 4 baserunners, 9 Ks. Jays vs. K’s and I’m not JK’ing. That’s all right, the Jays get next [squinting at the schedule] Rockies and White Sox? Then the Twins twice in April and the Angels? Manfred said let the Dodgers win the World Series and get a cushy schedule, huh?
George Springer – 1-for-4 and his 1st homer. How much brain custard does this Zombino need?
Jesus Sanchez – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. Takeaways are everywhere and my takeaway here is he hit 2nd. That’s knowledge to go.
Kazuma Okamoto – 1-for-4 and his 1st homer. Vroom vroom, that’s my Okamotor.
Max Muncy – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. That’s the right Muncy, the SacTown Muncy, the no panties-in-a-bunchie Muncy.
Mitch Keller – 6 IP, 0 ER, 3 hits, zero walks, 3 Ks vs. David Peterson – 5 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks. This matchup was billed as, “A deep league guy who I I didn’t want and drafted (Keller) vs. a guy who I would’ve drafted in any league, happily, who no one seemed to want.” Clearly, a lot of people called it by its billing name.
Brandon Lowe – 2-for-3 and his 3rd homer. He’ll zoink-up his oblique or hammy or quad at some point. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have power while he’s right.
Carmen Mlodzinski – 4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 6 hits, zero walks, 8 Ks. Was one of those NL-Only picks that almost had me interested in learning how to say his name. After watching him (95 MPH 4-seamer, 85 MPH bye-bye splitter), I might be putting him on my Streamonator call list, and one goes from there to just rostered quickly.
Nolan McLean – 5 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks. Not quite sizzle McLean, but after my dung factory Sproat’d a stress polyp, I’m not complaining.
Sonny Gray – 4 IP, 3 ER. He went back to Cincy and WKRP-U’d.
Connelly Early – 5 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 6 Ks. One hyped starter who actually pitched well? Thanking you, Early and often.
Wilyer Abreu – 3-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer. None of this really means anything. Three games does not make a sample size. With that said, Wilyer is in a good position to be valuable.
Rhett Lowder – 5 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 5 Ks. A little bit Lowder now…a little bit Lowder now…a little bit softer now…Make up your mind now..
Eugenio Suarez – 1-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 1st homer. In one league, I had one homer for the entire season, and I freaked myself a little, so I looked at the lineup and saw Eugenio, Matt Olson, Soderstrom, Machado and–it’s still March!
Jacob deGrom – On Saturday, he was scratched with a sore neck. May I suggest Icy/Hot instead of scratching?
MacKenzie Gore – 5 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 2 hits, 3 BBs, 7 Ks. He will Gore you at some point.
Andrew McCutchen – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 1st homer. A narrative I made up a few years ago that I think is accurate but has no evidence except confirmation bias: Older players start hot, because they’re feeling good in April, but, with their age, little injuries pile up and they are less good as they go along in the season.
Brandon Nimmo – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. Nimmo found one!
Aaron Nola – 5 IP, 3 ER, 7 baserunners, 7 Ks, and two homers allowed to make sure you didn’t really buy any nonsense in the preseason about how he was fixed.
Jesus Luzardo – 6 IP, 6 ER. See, last year I went through this with Luzardo and promised myself I wouldn’t do it again this year. Promises made, promises kept.
Deyvison De Los Santos – 1-for-2 as he was recalled with Christopher Morel out with an oblique for four to six weeks. Only one way they’d call him up is Morel is out a while because De Los Santos needs mushroom. High five me right now! No? Okay. DDLS has a lot of power, but can’t imagine he leap frogs Pauley, Conine, Norby and Hicks in the depth chart to start every day, but I am a cyclops with a monocle in deeper mixed leagues for power.
Max Meyer – 5 IP, 3 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks. Thinking of Sproat and Meyer, it’s so funny the amount of hype starters get, then they go out and pitch incredibly bleh vs. the likes of the Shite Sox or Suckies.
Owen Caissie – 1-for-2, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer, as he entered the game late for Austin Slater. I’m sorry, but you have such insane marbles in your head if you’re a MLB manager and are platooning Caissie out in that Marlins’ lineup for Austin Slater.
Victor Vodnik – 1 IP, 2 ER, and the blown save. Looked like Vodnik was gonna get the first save for the Rockies first win, but props to Vodnik for sticking to the script that the Rockies are awful.
Kyle Bradish – 4 2/3 IP, 2 ER vs. Taj Bradley – 4 1/3 IP, 1 ER. For the world famous portmanteau, Bradlish. (Whispers abound when he didn’t portmanteau matchup and portmanteau for portmatchup. Had Grey lost his fastball?) Clearly, neither start was great, but it’s still March. You dropping guys this early only gonna make you a Mr. Bungle. No one wants to be a Mr. Bungle.
Tyler O’Neill – 1-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 1st homer. Oh, wow, he didn’t set his internal clock and overslept Opening Day by three days.
Shane Baz – 5 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 7 hits, zero walks, 4 Ks. He just signed a five-year deal, so, if I were him, I’d suck for the next four years and 11 months. Hopefully he’s a better person than me!
Cole Sands – 1 IP, 0 ER, and his 1st save. Holy shredded cabbage! Wait, I’m thinking of Cole Slaw. If you need saves, like an hourglass on the moon, I’d move Sands up my depth chart, but this is likely going to be a fluid situation all year.
Bailey Ober – 4 IP, 3 ER. BO is strong with this one. Following Ober was Mick Abel (3 IP, 5 ER), who might be more BO than BO.
Royce Lewis – 1-for-4 and his 2nd homer. Imagine Royce Lewis finally breaks out after everyone seemed to be done waiting for him? I call that The Byron Buxton.
Cade Horton – 6 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 4 Ks. Horton’s win was the coffees we had along the way.
Shota Imanaga – 5 IP, 4 ER, 8 baserunners, 7 Ks. “You Shota Imanaga or you Sproata Imanaga?” He screamed at his fantasy team.
Alex Bregman – 2-for-4 and his 1st and 2nd homer. I can confidently say Bregman will hit between 24-26 homers this year if he gets 20+ homers by the end of April or only has two.
Ian Happ – 1-for-3 and his 2nd homer. And according to Statcast’s newest shizz about wind, Happ should’ve had a third homer already but it was knocked down by the wind on Opening Day. By the by, know what’s funny? People never want to draft Happ, then wish they had almost as soon as the season starts.
Joey Wiemer – 3-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 2nd homer. Here’s the thing, I nor anyone can tell if a guy is just hot the first week or breaking out. Wiemer is likely a schmotato, but ya never know.
Jake Irvin – 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks. Nearly had my first sonavabench of the season in my NL-Only when I saw Irvin was throwing shutties in the first three innings. In mixed leagues, Irvin Bleh’ing but listening to a jazzy ragtime number for NL-Only.
Keibert Ruiz – 1-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 1st homer. Keibert Ruiz home run in the first weekend is called, “A sign they’re using a bouncy ball.”
Will Warren – 4 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 3 Ks. Not bad, until you consider he was facing the Giants, who accidentally left their bats in Arizona.
Cristian Javier – 4 2/3 IP, 6 ER. You need to be patient in almost all circumstances. With Cristian? Circumstances become circumcise, so to speak.
Tatsuya Imai – 2 2/3 IP, 4 ER. More like Katsuya because he was cooked.
Bryan Abreu – 1/3 IP, 1 ER, and back-to-back terrible outings. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Astros let Abreu figure his shizz out in the middle innings while Bryan King (2/3 IP, 0 ER, 1st save) gets saves, because they don’t care who you drafted.
Zach Neto – 1-for-2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer. Everyone on the Angels hitting (Schanuel, Soler, Trout, do I need to continue) and no one on the Astros pitching well, just as we all drew it up in the preseason.
Reid Detmers – 4 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 9 Ks. Don’t worry, it’ll be next year!
Carlos Estevez – 1/3 IP, 6 ER, and was wearing a walking boot on Sunday. Royals say he’s okay. Yeah, totes. Can’t walk or throw but he’s good to go! After you throw an 81 MPH meatball to Dom Smith for a grand slam, you should be immediately IL’d with a fake injury and shouldn’t need a walking boot, unless you didn’t pay your feet parking tickets, but homeboy’s selling it more than Shawn Michaels. Pick up Lucas Erceg (1 IP, 0 ER, 1st save on Sunday).
Carter Jensen – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. [shaking an al dente noodle at Vinnie and Caglianone to do something]
Seth Lugo – 6 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks. Could Lugo be back to a usable starter? Confidently, “I don’t know. It’s one start.”
Reynaldo Lopez – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 3 Ks. Line looks good? Guess what? He looked even better.
Drake Baldwin – 2-for-4 and his 2nd homer. The one good Baldwin brother.
Eduardo Rodriguez – 5 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks. Someone still thinks it’s the WBC.
Randy Vasquez – 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 8 Ks. Streamonator hates his next one, but this start vs. a red McGonigle-led McGotigerley team, so he has me cyclops’ing Vasquez. By the way, Rudy released his newest tool (hey now) yesterday and it’s pretty insane. We’re almost to the point where the robots are just managing our teams while we rip cigs and whistle at ladies in front of the bodega, then talk to our buddies about how the robot picked up Randy Vasquez while slamming down a chopped cheese.
I drafted Lodolo, Pepiot and Ponce as my 2, 3 and 4 SPs. Good times.
Ouch
Here’s my week in a nutshell…. Stream Burrows and Ponce but hold off on Painter cuz limited moves each week.
So this is what owning J-Rod is like, is it? He really does swing at some shit.
Still early!
He’s a career .223 hitter in March and April, he’s been a slow starter long enough to not be surprising, though he does more running in this period than any other. He’ll heat up as the temps rise.
The only year I had him he was my Mr Irrelevant, and perhaps my best pick ever.
Every year since he’s been a really slow starter.
Welcome to the season Mr Carroll. Man he looks locked in.
Also Verlander looks kinda washed. At least he has Kate Upton to keep him warm at night.
Brett Baty or Jordan Walker or Matt Wallner for a breakout?
Do you still like Burrows for a solid SP 6 in a 12 team?
Thanks!
Looks like I picked the right day to start 4 Nationals (Wood, CJA, House, and Garcia)
Woot!
I enjoyed that ride in the Ed-Cab!
Yordong!
Captain Woo-Hoo! Cubano.
LFG!
We love it!
So the Phillies are down 7-0, and they’re announcing a “senior day” promotion, and the camera man is finding gray-haired Philly fans in the stands and every one of them looks super pissed off and it’s one of the funniest gd things I’ve ever seen in a game. El oh el you cannot make this shit up.
HA!
Camera finds an angry old dude, caption on-screen says “senior citizen” hahaha
Perfect
Noelvi Marte 0-6 with 4 strikeouts. Come on Reds! I have a fantasy league to win
Haha
Dropped him. Sitting against righties, batting 9th? Bum.
(I’ll keep an eye on him though)
Ponce! That did not look good
Brutal
Pirates offense in mid season form already. I was hoping for a return to mediocrity with reynolds. Yes I know it’s been 4 games.
Haha
Would you take a shot on Weimer over Luis Garcia? NL only OBP
sure
grey
would you drop Josh Smith for Jordan Walker, canzone or laureano 11 team Roto
Walker
Grey! 6×6 (including ops). How do you rank these guys ros? Thanks!
Otto
Noelvi Marte
Lawlar
Bogaerts
Tovar
Durbin
Barger
Muncy (Sac)
Tovar, Otto, Barger
Thanks!
No problem
Gunnar!
I had to double check the stats to make sure it actually happened.
lol
WOW
12T Dynasty:
my 3B are Noelvi/Shaw
my OF are Acuna/Buxton/RobertJr/Pages/JCrawford/KGriffin
Trade Acuna/Noelvi for Caminero/Langford?
I’m thinking longer term as I don’t think I have the pitching to compete this year (Eury,Rogers,Ray,Horton,Baz (IL:Wheeler,Greene,Bryce,JJones))
My infield after the trade would be Kurtz, Whetherholt, Caminero, Elly; and you can see what the OF would look like
Works for me
In an AL only, who’s the drop among Isaac Collins, Benintendi, and Lane Thomas?
Thomas
14 team league
pickup either
Reynaldo Lopez
Michael McGreevy
for
sproat or Shane Smith? or both?
Both
Hey Grey!
Wanted to get your thoughts on any roster moves you might consider for my team in a 10 team h2h keep 4 league. Usually I only use 1 of our 5 bench slots for hitters so right now I could probably use one more pitcher.
Would you drop any hitters (or I guess pitchers) here to pursue FA pitchers like Erceg, Sewald, Abel, Ponce, or streamer?
For me I’m looking at Cags and Reynolds as the first possible drop candidates since I drafted McGonigle in the final round and I could keep him there. Might keep the setup longer too to give Cags a chance to play a bit first before changing anything. Curious what you think.
C – B Rice
1B – S Stewart
2B – M McLain
SS- E de La Cruz
3B – J Caminero
OF – y Alvarez
OF – J Rodriguez
OF – F Tatis Jr.
OF – W Langford
u – Z Neto
U- K McGonigle (rd 23)
Ben- Bryan Reynolds, J Caglionone
SP- Kirby, Bradish, E Perez, Imanaga, Bubic, Alcantara, Nola
RP- C Smith, Jax, R Walker
IL- Wheeler, Snell
Not yet
Hi Grey,
Top 2 out of Raley, Jordan Walker or Garrett Mitchell?
Not Mitchell
Noelvi is sitting again lol. Praying for a Brett Baty breakout now as my starting 3b until i can hopefully grab a freshly dropped Max Muncy 1 off waivers…not exactly how I drew it up
Brutal
Hey Grey,
I know it’s super early, but would you drop Kikuchi for Hancock in a 12 team roto?
Nah
Rank for Saves only: Beeter, Garcia or Romano
Beeter
It wouldn’t be early season without a bit of kneejerk action, so I dropped Cantillo for Hancock.
Took Cantillo with the last pick in m draft so it’s not like I’m letting go of a prized possession.
Was hoping you’d mention Reynaldo – I streamed him for a QS but will be looking to pick him back up. Reckon there’s value in a QS league in guys who know how to make it through 6 innings with (hopefully) a minimum of drama. The likes of Lugo and Wacha probably in that boat too…
I did mention Reynaldo
I know you did – you fulfilled my hope is what I meant :-) I was looking forward to see what you’d have to say. Reckon he might have some long-term usefulness?
Oh, I misunderstood…Yeah, he looked great, I like Reynaldo
Dropped Marsee for Lile too btw – cleaning house!
Nice!
Fielder’s choice RBI for Lile already – LFG! (lol)
LFG!
What means less, spring training or the first week of the season.
I’m so insane I’m ready to drop pitchers who haven’t even pitched yet. I’ve already dropped Mick Abel to pick up Urceg, but at least there’s some logic to that, I hope.
Haha
Same tbh
What the f–k are the Reds doing with Noelvi? I drafted him in my NL only like he was going to break out.
Brutal
So I’m actually asking, what are the Reds actually doing with Noelvi. They are sitting him against right handers, but he actually had a reverse split last year. If they are only going to play him against lefties, I can’t keep him and I’m looking at guys like David Hamilton and Nick Gonzalez. Do you have any thought on that?
It sucks, I don’t know — I’d try to hold in deeper leagues, but Hamilton is playing and getting SBs
This is NL Only? I would not drop Marte
Jordan Walker or Matt Wallner?
Walker
It’s funny, I blew my NL auction and only had $1 to pick up Jordan off the garbage heap and could it be that this is the year he breaks out.
Haha
I know it’s only been a couple of games but the dbacks have already sat Lawlar once. That is disappointing. I hope they don’t continue to toy with him. I have my doubts. I am not expecting him to break out, but this is more for a keeper league.
I can keep one guy drafted after rd 20 at cost. Would you still hold or add walker? Would lose ability to keep Lawlar if i drop him and add back later
Meh, can wait another week
On Cole Sands, I am always going to be the guy who points out the value of a closer or co-closer who you can play in an SP spot. It’s like going fishing with one more lure than anyone else.
If it helps you, I lurves it
Well, sometimes that extra lure snags onto an old tire and breaks your line. But enough with the fishing metaphors. Luuuuuuuuresya! (see what I did there?)
Haha, I saw!
Jarren Duran or Teoscar/Erceg ?
Duran
Please rank
Cassie
Steer
Marte
Walker
Walker, Caissie
Would you trade away Canzone for:
1. Varsho
2. Shane Mac
3. Bubic
4. Lugo
5. Grisham
6. Reynaldo Lopez
Sure, any of them…Bubic
Hey Grey, wondering what you think of this team? It’s a very deep 11 team roto (add SLG%). You’ll see there are a few guys that will be pretty automatic starters when they get healthy (Hader, Pepiot).
C: A. Ramirez
C: E. Quero
1B: Olson
1B: Burleson
2B: Keaschall
2B: Gleyber Torres
3B: Maikel Garcia
3B: N. Marte
SS: Lindor
SS: Swanson
OF: Tucker
OF: Carroll
OF: Soderstrom
OF: Happ
OF: Lile
Rook Hitter: Ballesteros
DH: Canzone
DH: Colt Keith
SP: C. Sanchez
SP: C. Burns
SP: Emmet Sheehan
SP: Edward Cabrera
SP: Eovaldi
SP: Noah Cameron
Rook Pitcher: Nolan McLean
RP: Munoz
RP: Erceg

Bench: Kyle Teel (C), Brooks Lee (2B, 3B, SS), Jake McCarthy (OF), Sung-Mun Song (2B, Rook), Zahyr Hope, Josh Hader, Ryan Pepiot (SP), Shane Smith (SP), Messick (SP, Rook), Jax (RP), Ginkel (RP), Sasaki (SP, Rook), Hagen Smith (SP, Rook)
Looks like an excellent pitching staff, rock solid there…hitting seems very light on power, which isn’t great
Argh, I think you’re right – probably too much speed. Even though I didn’t prioritize SP early (because of keepers), I think I went too early on Garcia and Keaschall, which hurt my power. Was too worried about balance across the positions.
I hear ya
@Grey: weekly roto. who do you like better for saves this week?
walker – 3 @ sd, 4 vs nym
erceg – 3 vs min, 3 vs mil
also, 3rd OF:
ward – 3 vs tex, 3 @ pit
a garcia – 3 vs was, 3 @ col
j crawford – 3 vs was, 3 @ col
thanks!
Walker
Adolis
Like any of these SP for 2 starts this week or avoid: Verlander (@ ARI, vs STL), Leiter (@ BAL, vs CIN), Kyle Harrison (vs TB, @ KC), Braxton Ashcraft (@ CIN, vs BAL)
QS, K/9 league
Leiter
Gotta love Sal Stewart being confidently inked in to the clean up spot every day. Off to a great start.
It is awesome!
Good afternoon Grey!
Which 3 of these guys would you start this week?
Noah Cameron (MIN)
Shane Smith (@MIA)
Emmet Sheehan (@WAS)
Eovaldi (CIN)
Messick (@CHC, LAD)
Sasaki (CLE, @WAS)
For more context, I’m already starting these guys…
Chase Burns (PIT, @TEX)
EdCab (LAA, @CLE)
Sanchez (WAS)
Nolan McLean (@SF)
Eovaldi, Cameron, Sheehan
Hey Grey, here we go! Who would you put in as your third RP for this coming week? It’s a s&%t sandwich while I await Hader’s return (already starting Munoz and Erceg).
Griffen Jax (6, @MIL, @MIN)
Ginkel (7, DET, ATL)
Taylor Rogers (6, TB, @KC)
Rogers
Bubic home vs Minny or
Leiter at Balt or neither?
Bubic
I am slapping the wall that this is the walker breakout… in a shallow 10 team OPS league how would you rank N. Marte, Benge, Doyle, Wiemer, Walker
Also Wiemer’s minor league stats dont look that great. You think the hot start can be showing signs of a breakout
Try Walker
I didn’t get the memo. Jordan Walker?
Cards OF
Rp r. Garcia tex or erceg?
Erceg
Hey Grey,
Would you start Murakami vs Paddack over any of the following: Kurtz vs Elder, Canzone vs Weathers, Trea vs Griffin, Maikel vs Woods Richardson. Not sure how to squeeze him in….
Would you drop Warren or Sproat to add Hancock?
Over Canzone…lose Sproat
Had JJ on the bench this first week – Elly, Keaschall, Albies and Yelich (at SS, 2B, MI and U). Who sits this week? Still JJ?
Yes
HI Grey,
I have Imai, Abel, Baz and Jax. All had a bad weekend.
1. Would you be patient with all or any?
Three pitchers on the wire are: 1. Randy Vasquez whose next start is home vs CO 2. Eric Lauer whose next start is at CWS.
3.Reynaldo Lopez at AZ and AZ LAA
Would you drop Jax or either of Imai, Abel, Baz to pick up Vasquez, Lauer, Lopez?
Thanks!!!!!!
Lopez over Abel
Thank you!!!
No problem
Update: Josh Naylor still hitless.

Also, not breaking: he’s enormous. Seriously looks like Menoah after he blew up. I know he’s never been skinny and I would never fat shame anyone, but would it be too much to ask to keep him away from getting 3rds at the locker room spread? I’m just asking the important questions here.
Someone has to
0-18? Make me feel better about Caleb Durbin and his 0-12. How ’bout Cal Raleigh k’ing 8 straight times to start the season?
Yeah, less than ideal for sure. Call me crazy, but I am starting to suspect he might not hit 50+ this year.
DeLauter also has K’d 35% of his AB’s so far. What we expect for Murakami.
Do you like Murakami better?
Yes
B-Lowe or Polanco for 2B in a 7×7 daily roto (AVG, OBP, SLG)
Lowe
But Delauter faced Logan Gilbert, Brian Woo, George Kirby and an apparently decent Ralph Waldo. Not to mention an opp tank against Munoz. Delauter never had k issues in the minor and that number probably comes down quickly.
Ok, now a kinda grotesque who to start Hitter question.
For my UTIL in our 12 Team Yahoo H2H with OPS, I am staring down the barrel of Barger or N. Marte. I would love to give Marte some rope, and I can’t imagine ending the season with Barger on my squad, but please let me know what you think for this week.
Barger faces COL and is at ChiSox
Marte faces Pitt and is at TEX
I think both are benched for pitching matchups, but oh well. Thanks much Grey.
Barger
Please rank
Baz
Hancock
Reynaldo Lopez
Gallen
Vasquez
Gallen, Baz, Lopez
Would you trade Jackson Holliday for William Contreras, with my current C Yanier Diaz. 12 team OBP league. Brandon Lowe is my current 2B, Durbin is my backup.
Yes
Should I drop Bryan Abreu for Romano in my H2H pts league? Saves are 5pts , Hlds are 3.
Thank you kind sir
Yes
Recommending Jordan Romano can’t feel great.
Ha
Two start week from Jacob Lopez (at Atlanta and vs. Astros) or one start week from Hancock (at Washington)
Hancock
Love the recaps, favorite part of morning. 12team H2H, drop Sheehan or Baz for Hancock?
Thanks,
Grey
Thanks! Nah hold
@Grey: weekly roto. need to start one of these three?
baz @ pit
ray vs nym
hancock @ laa
also, in a weekly league, you trusting degrom makes a start this week?
thanks!
Ray
Yes
Can you rank kwan, Brady house, Ian happ and Owen caissie
Happ….Kwan, Owen
Was able to acquire DeLauter, but I’d like to move him for an SP or RP. What tier of guys should I be looking to trade for, or do we think he has a monster year (stays healthy) and just hold?
I’d want at least around a Lodolo/Schlittler/Fairbanks
Perfect. Thanks man.
No problem
Schlittler or Hancock?
Points H2H
Schlittler
When I saw the title for Rudy’s post (“Launch of Razzbot”), I immediately thought: “Holy crap, Rudy’s gonna tell us that Grey had retired months ago and that all these recent postings and rankings from “Grey” were really from an AI bot !!”
Grey, just to dispel our fears, can you answer the Captcha problem provided below …
Haha…
I can provide your luggage password: 12345
Stop looking over my shoulder at the ATM!
Haha
12 team H2H 6×6..pick one-
Sproat, Cantillo or Wacha
Wacha
Regarding Hancock, you think there’s any chance he does well enough to stick when Bryce Miller is back?
Also, where is Noelvi for you now? I know it’s only been 3 games, but being platooned and batting 8th & 9th is pretty rough.
Maybe!
It is very rough
Start or Sit? Imai in Sacramento.
I’m sitting
smart, will do
Hey Grey, followed your rankings and got this in a 12 TM Yahoo auction. Splurged on closers a bit I though they were good price…
OK, bad, meh? Am I short on power?
C- Alvarez, 1B- Vald, 2B- Durbin, SS- EDLC, 3B- Bregman, OF- Harris, Ward, Happ, Utility – Abrams, Sal Stewart
SP- Brown, Ryan, Horton, Gray, Ray, Flahery, Senga, Abbott, Leiteer
RP- Bednar, D Williams, Iglesias
Your pitching is rock solid, and maybe more than you need potentially…I like it tho…I think the hitting is solid too, maybe a tad low on power
Hey Grey, glad you are back. Need your help! In a 12 team roto league with OBP and QS. Here is the core of my team: Hitting: Y Diaz, Alonso, Brandon Lowe, Eugenio Suarez, Bogaerts, Durbin, Bregman, Acuna Jr., James Wood, Corbin Carroll, Chapman, Burger, V Scott, Jackson Holliday. Pitching: Eury Perez, Kevin Gausman, Cade Horton, Nick Pivetta, Reynaldo Lopez, Zac Gallen, Ryne Nelson, Gavin Williams, Corbin Burns (DL), Aroldis Chapman, Paul Sewald, Josh Hader (DL). Most concerned about my staff. Thoughts on the team and the staff in particular.
You don’t have an ace so that’s a little concerning but it’s not that bad, I don’t mind the staff, in general…I like that you have a ton of arms to choose from…Hitting seems low on OBP, and maybe RBIs, but not bad…I like the team overall…
Thanks Grey. Would you trade a bat like Alonso for Sale or DeGrom?
Nope
Hi Grey,
Start Mon- Thursday out of the below?
Canzone vs. NYY (faces 2 lefties)
Noelvi vs. PIT (believe faces 3 righties)
DDLS vs. CWS
Also, start Fairbanks (vs. CWS, @NYY) or Jensen (vs. SFG, @BOS)
Thanks!
Marte
Fairbanks
10 team Yahoo Roto, 5×5, daily lineups
Want to pick up Emerson Hancock…
Ivan H, Olson, Keaschall, Riley, Bichette
IF spot – Yandy
4 OF – Soton, Happ, Cagiione, Tatis
Util – Okamoto
BN – Lile, Sal Stewart
NA – Eldridge
We have 2 SP, 2 RP, 3 P spots available each day….
SPs – McLean, Early, Burrows, Woo, Ragans, Gallen, McClanahan, Senga
RPs – Bednar, Helsley, Fairbanks, Jax, Erceg
IL – Yates, Pepiot, Yesavage, Musgrove
NA – L. Henderson
Is there a drop worth making for Hancock?
Thanks!
Nah
Griffin Jax got rage-dropped in my 12-team roto league and me need saves bad. Would you cut Mick Abel for him?
yes
Did Reynoldo Lopez look good enough to be sp5 in a 12team head to head?
Debating between Reynoldo, Clay Holmes. Eric Lauer.
Also B.Baty or Correa?
Appreciated.
Yeah, he looked solid
Baty
I feel so proud to have identified the first schmotato of the year.
heart eyes emoji
Ha
Would you start Hancock (at Angels) over Sheehan at Washington? Sheehan seems to be having velocity issues so far.
No
Would you start Hancock this week (at Angels) over Sheehan at Washington? Sheeehan seems to have velocity issues early on.
Hey Grey, 12 team, keeper, 6×6. Drop Sproat for Cantillo or Wacha? Thanks
12 team h/h points redraft
Can pick one
Ponce or Hancock
Hancock
Hey Grey – here’s my squad in my TB/OBP 12 team H2H categories:
C: Shea, 1B: Yandy, 2B: Keaschell, 3B: Jazz, SS: J. Wilson, OF: Acuna, OF: Yordan, OF: Bellinger, UT: Buxton, UT: Nimmo. Bench: Royce.
SP: T. Rogers, Gore, Early, Wacha.
RP: Cade, Palencia, R. Walker, R. Suarez (ATL), Whitlock, Dreyer, DL Hall. (Hall/Dreyer have SP/RP elig).
Went with a modified Marmol to see how it plays out this season. Drafted hitting heavy. What changes or improvements would you look to make to this roster by skillset? Wish I had one more lock down closer but hesitant to move bats. Thanks man and looking forward to this season!
Your pitching staff seems too risky, upsidey and not enough IP, in general…I’d want safer SPs and RPs…hitting seems excellent tho
Thanks Grey. Enough hitting to move maybe Bellinger for a Mason Miller type?
Also, only 23 IP minimum, if that helps your analysis. You’re the man for taking all this time to field this kind of stuff.
That helps understand your thought process…I don’t hate it as much knowing that, but you have to just clear that and hope your wonky RPs hold the fort
Thank you Sir. Have a great one.
You too!
I think so
Rank these speculative OF adds: Jesus Sanchez (TOR), Joey Wiemer, Garret Mitchell, Tyler O’Neil
Weimer, Mitchell
Thanks!
No problem
12 team h/h points
Gav Williams or Sandy Alcan
Sandy
I think opening week was my worst week in over 4 decades of fantasy.
Y Diaz 2 for 12
Naylor 0 for 15
Stott 3 for 8 my big star!
Gunner 1 for 12
Noelvi 0 for 6
Rooker 1 for 13
Ward 1 for 11
J Rod 1 for 15
Acuna 1 for 12
Teoscar 1 for 10
Barger 0 for 8
Abrams 1 for 7
6 runs, 9 RBIs no HRs but 2 SBs whoohoo
Plus to add insult to injury I had DeLauter, Canzone and Lewis on the bench. I’m smart.
Please tell me this will pass
It’ll pass
Thank you
No problem
I had Jax , Ian seymour, and Carlos Estevez on the same team if it helps.
HAHA
Morning, couple of questions..
Who do you like better for this year- CRafaela or Cole Young?
Do you think Murakami and Devers will wind up pretty similar in value by year end?
FAlvarez, Dingler or Yainer?
thank u kindly
Ceddanne
Murakami and Devers could
Alvarez
In a QS league how strongly are you feeling about starting Leiter today @ Baltimore?
Seems fine
Was offered Trevor Rogers and Augustin Ramirez gor Ben Rice and Addison Barger…stacked at third with Machado and Paredes…needs starter to pair with Hunter Brown…thank you it’s a 12 team dynasty 5×5..
I’d take Rogers
Drop Max Meyer for Gavin Williams or Randy Vasquez?
Meh
Gavin was ranked way ahead of him tho
Double Starting: Leiter, Verlander, EdCab, Weathers, Ashcraft
Sitting doubles: Leahy, Roupp, Jacob Lopez
Caveat…i would start Leahy but my 14 year old over ruled me
Yes, blaming the kid!
that’s why ya have kids
Haha, gotta blame my dog
Grey!!! Another season! LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
got something i need to sort out
Daily yahoo h2h league
I went heavy bats (230 out of my 260 budget in bats) So I kept some big expensive keepers but i have a pretty great lineup (devers tatis, alvarez olson, gunner, acuna) but it made me have a pretty weak rotation in a daily league that you want to start as many sp as possible (within reason) for wins ks etc
i got baz pep mclanananahan mclean but after that its pretty dicey as i grabbed a whole bunch of $1 guys to fill out and hope for some breakouts
q1. can you please rank these SP so if i find an add i want i know who to drop immediately for someone worth adding.
Fuentes, burrows, boyle, harrison, abel, cantillo, j.lopez, messick.
it is a keeper league so any breakout like Fuentes would only be 5$ to keep next year, so im trying to keep that in mind as well.
q2. would you drop any of these guys for Erceg (i currently only have 2 rp out of 3 rp spots.
Thanks Grey! so happy to be back in my morning coffee routine and baseball!
Good to see you, Umpy
Didier Fuentes to AAA
back in….? i’ll say 2 weeks
Yeah
Yeah, he’ll be back in 2 weeks
What’s the plan? I’m scared of all the opener/piggyback weirdness going on nowadays.
They sent him down to stretch him to be a starter
Ah, I dropped him. He gave me 4 good innings. Why should I expect more?
Haha
Morning Grey! Well that was a fun 5 Days of Baseball – HA! Here’s hoping Week 2 goes better. I am still feeling the Estevez outing. And of course I have him on both teams.
Any concerns with starting Jack Leiter for his double shot against Baltimore and Cincy or do I stick with Zac Galen and his 1 start against the Tigers.
This is in our Yahoo 12 Team H2H. If it was our Points League, I would have him in for the 2 starts.
Thanks much Grey. I love the Monday morning roundups after the weekend.
i’m double starting Jack Lit.
Thanks! Agree with Steve
Thanks much guys.
I guess I would follow that with who to bench out of Gallen against Det., Baz at Pitt., or Shane Smith at Miami?
Always appreciate the advice.
Gallen
Happy Spring and new season, Grey!
Good to be back in a normal Monday morning Razzball groove.
A few early roster questions for you. 10 tm redraft OBP and QS H2H league.
My closers (saves, no holds) are Ryan Walker and Dennis Santana. Sewald, Erceg and Sands are FA options. Would you make a switch for any of these 3?
I’ve got Jorge Polanco in my MI spot. FA options include Otto Lopez, Bogaerts, Arraez and Durbin are available. Make a move or hold?
My last bench spot is currently hanging on to Jordan Lawlar. Jakob Marsee and Teoscar were dropped this morning. Benge, Heliot Ramos and Laureano were already on the wire. Any of those over Lawlar?
Last, here is my pitching rotation:
Logan Webb
Mackenzie Gore
Eovaldi
Flaherty
Senga
Trevor Rogers
Ed Cabrera
Baz
Weathers
FA arms include:
Ryne Nelson
Mize
Max Meyer
Messick
Liberatore
Painter
Ponce
Fuentes
Would you swap out any of the starters?
Looking forward to another fantastic season here and thank you!
I know that feeling! Coffee and razzball in the morning. i dont start work until this happens….
Thanks! Ramos — Let’s see what Weathers does
Best on the WW: Grisham, Bauer, Beck, Bogaerts, Reynaldo, Sands. Any swaps with this team? Looking at Abreu in this 12 teamer with holds and saves as separate
cats.
Agustin
Harper, Bregman, Busch
Otto, B Lowe, Keaschell
JRod, Merrill, Frelick, Stanton, J Crawford
Util Schrwaber
Bench: Canzone…start him when he plays over J Crawford for now.
Crochet, Cease, Eovaldi, Horton, Lauer, Hancock
Palencia, Fairbanks, Romano, Abreu
IL Wheeler
Thanks!
Lopez over Lauer, or hold…not a move you have to make
12 team h/h points redraft
You trade Harper/Greene/Helsley for Freeman/Ju Rod
Yes
12 team h/h points redraft
Closer…
Helsley or C Smith
Cade
HA! Dropped Austin Riley for Murakami in my points league yesterday before the game! Auuu shizzz thanks Grey! (Godzilla Part 2)
Haha
Thoughts on this 12person hitting lineup
Augustin
Naylor
X Edwards
Durbin
Abrams
Adames
Burleson
Rooker
Grisham
Canzone
Schwarber
C Walker
IL – chourio
Looks solid, maybe a littlelight on power…Edwards, Naylor, CJ, Burleson…aren’t known for their power
Thanks. My bench is weak. Rumfeld, Beck, Ozuna, A Wells, Luis Garcia Jr. Waiver Wire Power adds is thin. Wallner, SOler, Gorman, O Hoppe, S Murphy, Vientos. Do you like any of these over the bench?
Meh, not really…maybe if Vientos had ABs or Soler over Wells but different positions
I’m still cycling through options to replace Chourio in a 14 team league with AVG & OBP.
Who do you like out of these options:
Wallner
Caissie
Wiemer
J Walker
Andres Gimenez
Meidroth
Hamilton
Oswald Peraza
House
Max Muncy (LAD)
Williamson
Carson Williams
Lockridge
It’s rough out there.
I’d try Caissie or Wiemer
Too early to try to flip Teoscar for Murekami or Okamoto?
I prefer Murakami, didn’t like Teoscar this year, but it’s just fair
Hey Grey,
Thanks for the suggestion on Soderstrom/Machado for Caminero. I was on the former side of the deal and it’s going to balance my team out nicely I believe even though we’re just one weekend in.
20 team h2h cats dynasty:
Shane Smith or Imai
For now and tomorrow.
Gracias
No problem! Imai
Oswald Peraza looks like a major leaguer, breakout potential
Alek Thomas looks to finally put his skills to use.
Sadly less than 5 games, but they’re continuing what they did in the spring.
Yeah, maybe
Jordan Walker looked like a superstar…. Who knows.
He was so bad the in spring.
Meh, it’s a weekend
Would you drop Barger for Jordan Walker…12 team dynasty…or Lawler…thoughts? Thank you!
No
Hancock now the new #1 on the 94 Best Fantasy Starts list. One year ago he was cementing a spot in the bottom 10: March 31>> .67 IP/6 ER/8 BR/0K.
Nice!
Positive regression?
haha. May everyone regress like that! He did have a couple good starts last year. His best was June 15: 7 shutout innings vs Cleveland with 3 baserunners and 4 strikeouts.
Grey,

You have two aces and multiple number two’s, so solid starters and RPs are weak…I like the hitting, seems pretty well balanced, solid team overall
Twins batting Kody Clemens lead off 2 out of the first 3 games. Is this a sign they have thrown in the towel before the calendar even flips to April?
That sign was when they hired Derek Shelton
H2H league. Wine are big 10 extra points. I start 6 pitchers. Sale, H.Brown are my only plug and plays. I’m rolling Ponce vs Colorado. Probably gets White Sox too. Then rate 3 out of these. Bassitt (2). Texas, @ pitt. King @ Boston. Gallen v Tigers, Senga@ STL maybe a 2nd start @ Giants. I can also use closers. D Williams 7 game week. Jansen. Also Rasssmusen @ Mil. Thx in advance.
Gallen, Senga, Devin
7.2% SwStr% for Emerson Hancock… You sure about being all in?
He looked good — guy off waivers? Yeah, I’d pick him up
was offered PCA for James Wood in a 12 team roto league, I know its early but am considering it. What do you think?
Wood
12 team h/h points redraft
Which side
Harper… Sandy Alcantara or
Y Diaz (TB ) … H Brown
Hunter, it’s fair
10 team OBP league, have Riley, Wetherholdt, and eventually McGonigal at 3B. Would you drop Dodger Max Muncy for Owen Caissie?
Thanks as always!
Sure
Why would anyone draft a player in the 1st round knowing full well that they weren’t going to get any meaningful production from him until the 2nd half of the season? The same old story with Julio and yet we keep making the same mistake.
Maybe because he still ended up #6 on the Player Rater in 2025.
Oops. He actually finished at #11 last year.
Many people play season-long roto
I hear ya
10 team 5×5 OBP.
Dump Sproat/Abel for Hancock, Mlodzinski or Boyle?
Sproat for Hancock
Luv ur daily notes. Would you drop weathers for hancock?
Nah
For saves would you add Erceg over Abreu now?
Yes
How many “should I drop Cal Raleigh” questions and the like before the razzbot simultaneously gains sentience and loses its sanity?
It’s delightful, it’s delicious it’s de-Lauter.
The Mlod Squad solid fbb team name. I have him in a couple places because i’m so smar…checks current standing…nevermind.
Mlod Squad. I know how old the Oak is!… I’ve been waiting for a Player named Adam who wears #12, then I could be One Adam 12!
nice
HAHAHA
The Gen X references from my childhood were splendid, Bravo sir!
Thanks!
Drop Noah Cameron for Hancock?
Nah
Thank you so much for recommending to grab Murakami right away.
No problem
This is the best time of year and your articles always make it even better. Never stahp!
Thanks!
Grey should I hate him
You don’t even know him.
Eventus stultorum magister. [Latin:
loosely meaning “Fools have to learn from their experiences.”]
Kyle Manzardo
gratias agimus tibi Grey
thats thank you in Latin
I am in keeper league – thinking about
TJ Rumfield – had a dream that Itch was picking him up in all of his leagues
I like Rumfield
no flashbacks to Toglia? LOL
Haha
Ha
Hi Gray –
12 team roto5x5:
Erceg or Uribe?
Baty or Otto Lopez?
Lewis or Paredes?
Thanks!
Erceg
Lopez
Lewis
Thanks. Looking forward to the season!
No problem!
One of my teams has 0 HR and another has an ERA over 6.50. Should I delete my Fantrax account?
HA
What a bizarre first week. Same as last year.
I hit 0 home runs in 3 leagues Sunday. I do own DeLeuter in 2 leagues…. But one of my opponents owns Neto and Murakami and Will Smith so I got defeated by them 3. Sale shit.
It’ll get better but the pitching was ridiculous.
Anyhow, I’m still sitting in that My Weathers for Noelvi Trade. Am I overreacting?
Oh, I know my Marlins are 3-0 but I’m not understanding Slater leadoff, not letting CAISSIE hit Lefties, benching Hicks after a home run, and leading Slater off and batting X 6th and (I love him) but hitting Otto cleanup. Make it make sense Grey. How does he get a job? The world is quite backwards IMO.
How about Snelling and Garrett in AAA? Chris Paddack has never had a Sean below a 4.00 ERA…… 4.99 and 5.35 last two years. Ah, service time. Let’s blow an opportunity to make the playoffs, so we can get another year out of a guy we will trade. Stupid! Watch these idiots trade Sandy away! Miami has a good squad.
re: Caissie — it’s kinda nuts to bench your one serious bright spot that you should want to see get as many ABs as you can get him
100
Aaron never gonna be fixed; it’s Nola, not Noballs.
HA
