Our 2018 Razzball Commenters Leagues are in full signup mode.  I even heard there were a few people from Anonymous that signed up!  They said, “To the world, I’m Anonymous, just another white man who sits in parking lots with binoculars watching women.”  Man, that Anonymous guy is depressing!  As we always do about this time, I eviscerate the haters and complicators!  I eviscerate the not-knowers and the over-knowers!  I eviscerate the ESPN goers and the garden hoers!  I overuse a word like eviscerate that I just learned!  I am the Fantasy Master Lothario (don’t abbreviate it) and I’ve come for your children!  See, because blog writing doesn’t pay so well, I’ve taken a second job as a bus driver, so I’m literally here for your kids.  Like a baller!  A shot caller!  An “I’m outside of Hot Topic at the maller!”  My eviscerating (I’m conjugating my new word!) today comes at the expense of ESPN and their 2018 fantasy baseball rankings.  To the tune of Baby Blue (Feat. Chance the Rapper) by Action Bronson:

[Verse 1: Grey Albright]

Because you know Treat Urner is the shizz,
I paid for the bed and now Cody Bellinger and I are sleeping in it,
I’ll pay for Acuna and the batter’s box he may never step foot in,
And now somebody else is eating those 120 innings deGrom might put in,
Things change, now Giancarlo is a Yankee and I’m wooden,
ESPN rankings got ya on the skids, like an old Doc Gooden.

Pray tell how is OZUNA in ESPN’s rankings after Benintendi, Justin Upton, Yelich and right behind Robinson Cano?  Let me see if I can justify it, boi scrambles to obi, which is a sash worn on a kimono, and OZUNA eats kimodo dragons for breakfast, and my autocorrect changes obvi to obi, so yeah I CAN’T MAKE SENSE OF IT.  Go to our Steamer Hitter projections and copy and paste this –> ozuna|*benintendi|*justin upton|*yelich <– into the Name column.  OZUNA has the most homers, 2nd best AVG, best RBIs and 3rd best runs.  His steals are the lowest, but you can’t find eight steals elsewhere?  Please tell me you can find eight steals elsewhere.  PLEASE.  As for Cano, you can apples/oranges, tomatoes/potatoes, outfielder/2nd baseman me all you want, but OZUNA or Cano?  Is this close?  I will win* 100% of the leagues where someone drafts Cano in front of OZUNA.  One hundred raised up with red underlines!  All day, e’eryday.  Ulcer’s erupting, moving on.  *I may not win 100% of leagues where someone drafts Cano instead of Ozuna, because I have to make 25-ish other picks.

[Verse 2: Grey Albright]

So many fantasy baseball ‘perts wanna call me crazy,
And you wonder why I ain’t call you lately,
Some would say my mustache is a symbol for sex and uh,
Others wanna hate, but that means I can get Rendon for less,
And you could draft whatever,
My specialty is white snake and underwear sauce.

Last year, I told you to avoid Rick Porcello and ESPN recommended him.  Well, no dur.  He was coming off a Cy Young.  Of course, ESPN recommended him.  This is how they do:

“Should we rank Player A high?”
“Is Player A known?”
“Does that matter?”
“Yes.”
“Can you say who Player A is because saying Player A is confusing?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
….

THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU!  Yahoo’s got its problems, but they show their work.  Here’s how ESPN thinks:  Players that are known commodities they rank high.  They rank to avoid the least amount of waves.  Last year, Porcello was ranked 73rd overall.  Ya’ll seriously telling me a 29-year-old went from 73rd to 228th in their rankings this year?  See, they didn’t think I was coming with receipts.  I got receipts like CVS, snitches!

[Verse 3: Grey the Rapper]

I hope Bumgarner gets a paper cut on his thumb,
From changing tires while trying to make the X Games cut,
I hope every Shohei (hitter and pitcher) is shaken up,
I hope your streams dry like raisins in the baking sun,
I hope your closer committees all saggy with lots of Fernando Rodneys.

Most of my sleepers that I wrote about almost two months ago held true as I figured they would.  As I said back then, I have a pretty good idea who the big box sites will like.  I’m way up on Trey Mancini (sleeper), Blake Snell (sleeper), Eddie Rosario (sleeper), Tim Anderson (sleeper), Michael Wacha (sleeper) and Luis Castillo (sleeper).  By the way, last year I mocked ESPN for having Michael Brantley ranked 79th overall.  This year they didn’t even rank Brantley.  Welcome to the show, ESPN!   Go against people who use ESPN rankings and it’s gonna be like, “Come on, big fella, you drunk, big fella.”  Oops, wrong Chance the Rapper song.

Now on the less-Action Bronson (feat. Chance the Rapper) tip, here’s a chart of the biggest values from ESPN to me (Thank you!) and the players that ESPN overrates (No thank you!).  A small note, since I did this chart last week, ESPN has already adjusted their rankings, so some of these might be a little off, but it goes to show you the influence I’m having on them.  They so shook, y’all!

We have a winter waiver draft where players are dropped and we can pick them up. AL only, 11 team 5X5, these guys would cost $10 in the first round and then $5 in any other round. I’m looking for playing time in an only league….or elite potential: are any of them worth it?

    CJ Cron
    Francis Martes
    Juan Minoya
    Andrew Moore
    Kyle Lewis

Sorry Juan Minoya shouldn’t be there….it should have said Yan Gomes/Roberto Perez.

It’s a 2 catcher league and I have Brian McCann at $18 and Sanchez at $6 (but I will be extending his deal)….the Realmuto to HOU rumor had me worried about playing time for McCann and his expensive price makes me think I could get a discount, but with Meija coming up who knows.

Have you ever tried to listen to the espn podcast? It’s terrible. Not only do they dispense terrible advice, but you have to listen to errorbell cringe and clench throughout a barrage of clocksoft’s awkward attempts at humor that that combine the worst of dad jokes and 7th grade attention seeker. They want us to be miserable, but clocksoft really wants an invitation to errorbell’s birthday party.

I would say more than 1/2 of fantasy players out there make better drafting decisions than that guy. Stopped listening a long time ago. • OaktownSteve says:
      (link)

      @Master Bader:

Looks like a SP3 innings eater with some possible upside from there. Not quite enough swing and miss. Velocity never what was advertised in the low minors. Seems to be a pretty good competitor. The breaking ball is plus. Not the guy that was the #1 overall prospect.

    • LenFuego says:
      (link)

      @Master Bader:

Unfortunately, Giolito seems to be losing 1-2 MPH off his fastball each season. If he jumped back up to what he was 2 or 3 years ago, he could have #1 upside. If he maintains what he had last year, he is more like a #3 upside. If he loses another 1-2 MPH this year, then he is a #4/#5.

I have Giolito and have to make a decision on whether to keep him. I am planning on paying attention to what is reported about his fastball velocity in spring training and making my decision accordingly.

      • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
        (link)

@Grey: At the price he seems to be going, I’m happy to dive in . . . we had to take Odor in round 2-3 last year. Bauer will be much later . . . so if he puts up 200 IP of ~210 K and 3.85 ball, I’ll still be very happy.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

I don’t see any way Bauer doesn’t at least have a 9+ K/9 and some Wins, so it’s just a matter of his ratios being where they were last 2nd half

          • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
            (link)

@Grey: [email protected]Grey: Exactly. His price is such that he’s all upside and very high floor. Even a 4 ERA with 200 IP and 9+ K/9 is really great to have handy . . . Gerrit Cole could do that too and is much more expensive, with less K upside.

              Grey says:

                  (link)

Yeah, so close to Yu, but Yu in NL is a little more enticing… But so much closer than any rankings are saying…

                    (link)

@Grey: Right – same price, it’s Yu easily (esp. on Cubbies). But Bauer is about 25% the cost of Yu. AL-aside, could easily be an AL 2017 Robbie Ray.

Separately, there will be weeks where having Ray and Bauer at the top of my rotation gives me instant indigestion.

They have all since moved way up. I think they read Razzball. On the flip side, Ozuna has moved down to 46, Marte is down in the 50’s and all of their relievers moved up about 100 spots. I checked to see how Grey did against ESPN in last year’s version of this post, and I have to say that ESPN did not blow or suck last year.

Grey’s 2017 “Thank You” picks went 9-26 against ESPN based on each player’s final ranking for the 2017 season using the Razzball Player Rater for ESPN 12 team leagues. Ouch.

Grey’s 2017 “No Thank You” picks went 12-9 against ESPN, but that was split into two tiers: 2-7 for players ESPN had ranked in the top 67 (and one of Grey’s 2 wins was close), and 10-2 for players ESPN had ranked outside the top 67.

This post is best for draft prep when drafting on ESPN- especially knowing when you can wait on a player… or leave at the top of the list hoping someone else will snatch.

The confusing part for me is which list is this. ESPN has 3 different top 300s, one for rotisserie, one for head to head each category and one for points leagues. Then the ranks in their draft system (which is still down) is compiled in some other way (not sure if it is completely separate or some sort of average rank). Anyway it isn’t just one of their top 300 lists downloaded into the system. the best thing is to do this exercise (for ESPN or whatever system you use) from the pre-ranks just before the draft to identify underrated players you can target

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Yeah, it was confusing to me too… I just used Karabell’s top 300 for roto

    • Crime Dog says:
      (link)

@Darek: Their ranking system is pretty dumb haha

    • knucks says:
      (link)

@Darek: As Grey alluded to in the post a bit and others have mentioned before, I’m grateful that ESPN’s ranks are ridiculous and out of sorts. If I’m in a draft without Razzer’s, it advantage knucks, all day. The day that ESPN finally opens their Fantasy Baseball for 2018, I will immediately upload Grey’s Ranks and can count on cashing in most leagues come October.

  21. marti says:

Grey Good morning. I have been asking you about trade questions the last few days and haven’t pulled the trigger yet. If I make the trade that is offered this will be my team going into the draft which is a 10 team N/L only $260 budget roto keeper league with $5 inflation. We do 1 catcher instead of 2 and 2 utility instead of 1. I never spend more than a couple of bucks on a catcher because I think its a waste of money.

    Catcher
    1B Goldy 36
    2B
    SS Story 16
    MI Arcia 14
    3B J Turner 16
    CI Franco 17
    OF Puig 22
    OF Pham 6
    OF Acuna 6
    OF N Williams 6
    OF
    U McMahon 6
    U

    P Nola 16
    P Gray 11
    P Knebel 6
    P Hand 6
    P Neris 6
    P Vizcaino6
    P
    P
    P

That leaves me with $64 and 4 batting postitions open and 3 pitchers left. I’m not spending more than $2 on a catcher so basically $62 for 6 spots. I’m thinking with 4 closers already, I can trade one mid season for a bat or starting pitcher. Bryce Harper, rizzo , votto, freeman yelich marte hamilton all not being kept so I can get any of these guys and a couple of low priced pitchers. How does this team look?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Looks great so far, but potentially low on AVG… Freeman or Bryce would be great…. I like the pitching so far, but you need more SPs obviously

      • Marti says:
        (link)

I thought the average didn’t look so bad I looked at the last 4 years of history in my league and 270 got you eight points if I added Bryce Harper Austin Barnes at second base and Michael Wacha at pitcher and a couple of low priced dollar starters what you think of my roster because I think that’s really doable at the draft

        • Grey

          Grey says:

Wouldn’t mind another safe-ish OF, A-Jax fits that…. No more RPs… 2 more catchers is fine, don’t likely need 3 more, but if one is there you like, then I guess… You need some back up SS…

      • knucks says:
        (link)

@Grey: Thanks, I def agree and prob going with mercer with my next pick. Should play all year I think. Then Difo after that who is 2B/SS. Only RP on my mind was Tepara. And there are zero catchers left right now. But I don’t have a backup. Will prob go Rupp in a couple rounds and maybe just be done with it. Trevor Williams still there to take, prob for anther round or two.

  27. J-FOH says:

A quick note for those relying on the awful ranks by E$PN and Yahooz is that the closer you get to opening day, the more likely they will adjust. I feel like they don’t put much thought into how they rank because the ADP will adjust the ranks for them ie the fantasy players are actually ranking the players as the drafts move along. What may be a great value in February may end up being a nothing special later.

          @J-FOH:

That was a magic year. In addition to the rates, I also actually posted a W on something like 11 straight streams. That was my second year in RCL when not everybody had adopted the streaming strategy so I did have a pretty good collection of streamers to draw on. Thanks for the props, old friend.

@Grey: One thing on Ray that makes me scratch my head. He had a 4.08 at home vs 1.86 on the road but only gave up 13 dongs at home vs. 10 on the road. I know from my DFS writing days that his home park is also an “extra base hits” park too. Half those road dongs came in only two games (3 at SD and 2 at PHI). These numbers make me think there is a correction coming at some point and I don’t think it’s going to be bad. My eyes on him last year like what I saw, even with that high walk rate, he has the stuff to get out of jams as displayed by his super high 84.5% strand rate. He’s definitely a guy I would be super in on that I might sit against a hot team or a bad matchup.

When I was going over the game log I saw he faced the Dodgers twice during their massive cold streak following the 23 road games in 31 days where he got them for 24 K’s in 14.1 innings 1 ER and only 2 walks. He also gave up the three dongs at SD when they went on that little hot streak towards the end of the season…that’s all cust kayin’ for the fickleness of SP’s

I have Corbin in a h2h keeper league. Wasn’t going to keep him until I saw you wrote a sleeper post about him. I looked at his numbers and he had 4 really bad starts out of 32 total. If you took out just those 4 his era drops to 2.84, whip drops to 1.27, and k/9 and B.B./9 both go in the right direction a little bit. Not saying he’ll have those numbers but…..what do you think his upside is?

Right now I have $10 for Util & Catcher, $68 at CIs, $22 MIs, & $70 for outfield.

@OaktownSteve: The only real red flag in his profile is the additional infield flys he hit last year. Think he felt the pressure of hitting for more power in the middle of the lineup. Don’t think that’ll be an issue this year.

@Big Magoo: Is 2.5% a red flag for the infield fly’s? The improved walk rate (+4%) was a nice plus. Would you interpret him pulling the ball more and not going the other way a sign of him pressing for power?

@J-FOH: Infield flys went up to a career high of 14.8%. Yeah, that’s pretty high. FB% went up, Pull% up, LD% down. It all paints a picture of trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark.

@Big Magoo: I got the same takeaway too. He wants to hit dongs like all the other kids.

@knucks: Yea waiting for it to pop up on the Stitcher and will prob check it out last hour or so here at work. Usually like to follow along with LABR during the draft on Sirius.

@knucks: Stitcher for the Razz pod, but yes have to pay for the Sirius XM shizz to listen to the LABR draft. Or at least I did last year. I think its on again tonight. Sorry, I kind of combined the two talking points in my comment.

For me, the Razz Pod comes up on Stitcher like a day or so after its posted on the website, if that’s what you meant?

@knucks: Yea had a pretty good feeling that I knew who Rudy was gonna take, after staring at the Player Rater after the past few weeks. Started the pod 20 mins ago and can tell its who I thought it was.

But on the Sirius Podcast, the “All In Kid” who won it last year was talking about LABR on their show today. He mentioned how Rudy (I think?) had run everyone’s projections last year and was using it to figure out who people around him might take. And so the guy was saying he is waiting until tomorrow to put out his projections/rankings. Sounds scurred haha

Auction 5×5 NL Only Keeper League. We can keep up to 5 guys. Blackmon for $20 and Ozuna for $16 is a given. Looking at Wacha for $13 and then Hand for $10. Do I roll with Tomas for $18 or go against conventional wisdom which is “don’t pay for closers” and take Doolittle for $14? Budget is $260….

    • Grey

      Grey says:

I’d keep Wacha, Hand and Doolittle, then just don’t buy any more closers in the draft

What’s the deal with Fantrax? They are ok but don’t even have compare stats on trade page? This should be a basic option? This is brutal, can you talk to them and make that a priority change?

@J-FOH: That’s about where I have him ranked in a two catcher format. He’s the only high floor player on the roster outside of Springer through seven rounds too. Thought he’d go with Myers or Hosmer in the 5th instead of Posey, but there’s nothing wrong with it. Very interesting draft.
