If you’re like me most days, you’re sitting in your car beneath an underpass and writing ALF fan fiction, but today we have a different type of fantasy for you to engage in.  No, not your fantasy where it’s you and that girl from high school in a tub of Alphabet Soup and you write her a love letter on her back in noodles!  This is a fantasy baseball fantasy!  Because you know what would be really cool?  If you could join a fantasy baseball league that was against, like, 1000 other fantasy baseball teams.  But not a 1000-person league, where people are trying to figure out who the back-up third baseman is on the Single-A Astros affiliate, the Corpus Christi Amscrayers.  No, this is a 12-person league designed so you compete against eleven other people in your league, then 90 other leagues of twelve.  That would be cool.  Oh, wait, we’ve done that.  It’s called the Razzball Commenter Leagues, and they’re back, and you don’t even have to be a commenter to join it!  For a limited time only, get your loved one a fantasy baseball league!  That’s right, your hearts go pitter-patter or you’re dead on the inside (my condolences).  Since back in June when you abandoned your fantasy baseball team because it was totally sucking and you returned to your cubbyhole of leftover Chinese food and Teddy Grahams, you’ve longed for this day.  As Bob Marley sang, this is your redemption song, mon.  Or womon, for our five girl readers.  It’s time again to join some fantasy baseball leagues!

Before you close all of your extraneous porn windows and rush to sign up, let’s explain how these fantasy baseball leagues are going to work.  We’re going to have a bunch of leagues and crown a winner from each, then we’re going to crown ONE winner from all of the winners.  We will be crowning the winner by taking each team’s points and multiplying it against a ‘league competitiveness factor.’  If you want to see how it worked last year, go here.

So we’re going to fill up as many fantasy leagues as we can for the next seven weeks.  Each fantasy baseball league will be a mixed league, 12 team, snake draft, roto, 5×5, 5 OFs, one Middle Infielder, one Corner Infielder, one Utility, 9 pitchers, 20 game positional eligibility, 1400 innings max, 1000 IP minimum with 3 DL slots.  The major changes from last year is a 1400 IP cap (69% of you wanted this over Games Start cap), 3 DL spots vs. 2 and 500 moves per year.  Our survey of youse said the majority wanted a 300 move cap, but we decided to do a 500 move cap, figuring more the merrier.  That shouldn’t be inhibitive for even those who rosterbate until they are blind.

Unlike last year, the leagues will be at Fantrax. Now, before you get hives because change scares you, Fantrax is going to make this a much better experience.  Because:

A) We don’t have to setup our leagues anymore!  Yay for small miracles!  You won’t get to June and be like, “Wait a minute, why is my league H2H and every other league is roto?”  All you have to do is click a link, insert the league ID and password (razzball).  Password is always razzball and it is caps sensitive.  If you don’t see a spreadsheet, it might be because you’re using an ad blocker.  I can’t buy Cougs fancy jewels because of you, thanks!

B) We can do some leagues where there’s a cash payout.  Now if that fire deep in your lower intestine doesn’t burn unless there’s money on the line, money will be literally online.  There will, of course, be free leagues too.  60% of leagues will be free, 20% will be for $10, 20% for $20, and there will be no rake for Razzball.  100% payout (minus Paypal or credit card transaction fees).  The Fantrax league page says something about a Premium League fee, but you can ignore that.

C) There’s no C.

D) I think there were only two reasons, but let me think.

E)  Hmm…

F)  That’s right!  F!  As in eff ESPN!  We gave them our business for ten years and you know what they gave us?  *crickets*  Nothing, and apparently I have a cricket problem.  Guess it’s better than moths!  Wait, crickets don’t turn into moths, do they?

We’re going to start with 75 leagues and see how we do from there. To join a league… Sorry, again for the people in the back of the room:

TO JOIN A LEAGUE

Click the LINK in the ‘League Link’ column (see below grid) for the time you want and enter the League ID from the spreadsheet and password –> razzball.  Password is always razzball — lower case.  If you’re not signed up at Fantrax, you need to do that too (it’s free).  Damn, that’s too easy.  Oh, I guess I should also mention make sure you’re joining a league for free or for money, depending on your preference.  That’s it!

THE BIG PRIZE

All leagues (paid and free) will play for the big prize.  So, what do you win?  You win bragging rights!  Not just any bragging rights, but the bragging rights that you beat a thousand or so other people, and you can emphasize the “or so” as emphatically as you’d like.  What?  Not enough?  Okay, for this year’s prize we’re taking the bull out of bulloney.  We are upping the ante.  “Hey, Olympic high jumper, can you jump over this ante?”  No, you can’t, it’s been upped too high.  LOOK, it’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s our ante!  “Excuse me, astronomer, is that a satellite orbiting earth?”  No, son, it’s Razzball’s ante.  They upped it.  This year we are giving away a $250 Best Buy Gift card, which can buy just about anything (up to $250).  I recently bought a TV that sits underneath my toilet seat so when I whizz I can watch TV.  Granted, I bought this in a dream I had and I was married to Sofia Vergara in said dream, but this must exist, right?  Also, for s’s and g’s, I’ll throw in a Razzball t-shirt because I have 14,000 of these and I’ve already outfitted all the homeless people in my neighborhood with SAGNOF t-shirts.  But, most importantly, you will be crowned the 2018 Razzball Commenter League Champion.  Okay, now sign up…

Steamer weirds me out sometimes. I love Kyle Hendricks. I feel like his delivery is the most repeated/repeatable in MLB. His ability to command is second to pretty much nobody in baseball. So the guy goes out and delivers 509.2 innings over the last three years with a K9 above 8 and yet Steamer wants to give him a 7.53 K/9.

@OaktownSteve: Completely agree with you. Have him ranked inside of my top 100 overall. One of the few true WHIP assets among SPs after the aces are off of the board. Gets a ton of called strikes due to his elite control. In fact, I wrote one note next to his name so that I wouldn’t be tempted to move him down with all of the mud slinging going around – trust your rankings.

@OaktownSteve: Yeah, I don’t get it. I drafted him some places as my cheap #1 last year. If not for injury it would have been well worth what I was paying. Grey doesn’t like him either, not flashy enough. He has pitched under his xFIP last two years and other than his first extended time in majors in 2015 did so as well in minors. Which tells me it isn’t a fluke. Grey also gave him a 1.24 WHIP, which is high than he has had at any level he spent extended time at…ever.

@Grey:

Grichuk averaged 23 HRs in STL the last two seasons in around 420 ABs. The GM gave him the verbal nod for the RF job already this off season. AL East it’s not that hard to imagine a 30/85/85 season and you pray he hits .255. His current ADP is 336. He’s being taken right after Mikie Mahtook.

Gardner I feel like his about 2 rounds undervalued even if he just duplicates last year. He’s been pretty reliable. If the Yankee line up goes bizonkers he’ll see a bump in the counters.

Alfaro is my catcher this year.

Gardner was one of 8 20/20 players last year. Wait for it…Tommy Pham at 59 ADP. Gardner’s ADP right now is 173.

I’m liking Wil Myers right now too. Two things recommending him: the bags out of the 1st base slot and the fact that he really seems like the last man on a logical 1st base tier. Feel like there’s a solid drop from him to Miggy, Desmond, Gallo, Marwin, Olson as the next 1b eligible off the board.

I’m out on Olson this year, btw.

You have a weird thing about streaky guys. Upton is another. Instead of just saying, if I buy and hold all year, I’m going to get my number you usually drop a “he’s going to stink for two months, you’ll be out of contention and playing in a gypsy band in northern Spain” or some such. If Myers is going to give you 30/20 again, what do you care what months he’s going to do it in?

Let’s run with the assumption that the MLB can in fact manipulate the elasticity of the ball. What do you do if you’re MLB? What narrative do you want to paint. On the one hand, chicks and dudes dig the long ball. The steroid era is generally credited with reviving the game after the strike years. Ratings last year were good and it’s generally thought that the younger audience they covet like more home runs.

On the other hand, more scoring means longer games and that’s pace of play problems.

If they dial up the HRs though you may have something ridiculous like Giancarlo making a run at 70, which with him in NY will have the Nielson’s up.

You’re the script writer. How would you play it if you were MLB?

@Big Magoo:

I’ll give you this my old friend…we had a similar debate about Marte a few years back and you were more right than was I. I know you’re a speed score guy when it comes to BABIP regression…but for devil’s advocate…

Pham had the 4th best BABIP in baseball last year and the 6th highest HR/FB rate. Prior to last year he had a very AAAA resume so there’s no track record that predicted 2017. All this makes him a prime candidate for regression.

His ADP is really steep right now so even a reasonable amount of regression makes him a pretty big bust. I really prefer some guys just behind him in ADP like Schoop, Nola, Myers, Quintana.

Big Magoo
Big Magoo
Reply to  OaktownSteve

@OaktownSteve: I like Nola and Myers. Definitely can see owning them this year.

Think Schoop is a bit overpriced. Someone who doesn’t steal bases and derives a large chunk of his value from hitting for average makes me nervous when he’s such a free swinger (37.1% O-Swing% – 15th highest). Odor is exhibit A for what could go wrong with that type of profile.

I like Quintana, but don’t think he’ll K over a batter per inning again. Out of 57 SPs with a K/9 > 8.5 last season (min 50 IP), he was last in SwStr% (8.5%). Think he’ll settle into that 8.5 K/9 range.

@Big Magoo:

I agree with you on the Quintana K rate but I’ll take 8.5 there coupled with a full year with the Cubs defensive efficiency behind him. He’s another guy I see teetering on the bottom of a tier. Next guys off the board have some serious ??? Paxton, Keuchel, Cole, Arrieta.

I’m a total Paxton guy and I do want to believe. I think there might also be a little bounce back in Arrieta. Interested to see where he lands.

Below is the number of qualified starting pitchers who finished with double digit wins by season since 2007 (the column called Number), and the total number of wins accumulated by double digit win pitchers (Totals).

Season Number Totals
2007 65 889
2008 68 934
2009 66 878
2010 77 1034
2011 70 933
2012 73 991
2013 68 873
2014 70 941
2015 60 788
2016 55 746
2017 51 663

2017 starters in this group produced 371 fewer wins than did the group in 2010 which was the high water mark. Starting in 2015 you can see a pretty steep drop off, probably correlated to teams using metrics regarding pitcher efficacy facing a line up a 3rd and 4th time through.

What do you think might be the takeaways for leagues that use wins as a category. One thing that jumps to my mind is that in NFBC style leagues with weekly changes and no SP/RP split requirements. In the past, I felt like if you didn’t roll with 6-7 starters in your 9 P slots you were going to be seriously behind the ball in Wins and Ks. As a result, I never owned any non-closers, even the very best ones. But as the likelihood of SPs getting a win declines you also get a boost in the number of opportunities for non-closers to get wins as well.

Last year SPs averaged 7.96 K/9. If you’ve got an SP6 chances are you’re getting 150 innings out of that slot if you plug and play. That gives you 132 Ks at league average weight. An 11 k/9 reliever would give you 80k so you’re looking at making up about 50. You’re probably sacrificing 5-6 wins in that slot on average, but this is of course very luck dependent so there’s a lot of variability.

Taking 150 IPs at league average ERA of 4.36 and replacing them with 65 innings at 2.50 ERA from a good RP would reduce the team ERA to 4.03, which seems pretty significant to me. I didn’t do WHIP, but I’m guessing the impact would be similar.

So we’ve always known that RPs were huge in the old RCL format, so the question is how important will they be giving the innings cap? My guess is that given the way MLB teams are handling their pitching staffs, there’s still a lot of value to be had there.

OaktownSteve
OaktownSteve
Reply to  OaktownSteve

@OaktownSteve:

So that’s a pretty messy unedited post. I think the key question is, given that the chances of a SP getting a win are getting slimmer and slimmer, what impact does that have on fantasy?

In the analysis above, I kind of missed on the RCL analysis because I forgot to factor in that RCL has daily changes. So in theory, you could replace all 150 SP innings with 150 innings from a reliever at a high K rate so you’re going to get a net gain in Ks. It doesn’t work the same in weekly leagues like NFBC.

OaktownSteve
OaktownSteve
Reply to  Grey

@Grey:
Like I said, in weekly leagues they used to be a disadvantage but a lot of that handicap stemmed from the wins discrepancy. Now that the W thing is less pronounced, the ERA/Whip advantage becomes proportionally greater. Not to mention the fact that a good number of the high K RPs who don’t start the year closing are destined to get a shot at some point in the season.

I know Kenny from when I used to have a TV. I think his idea almost certainly can be argued strongly from a certain statistical perspective. It’s really the deeper analysis of how a staff would be constructed, what usage rates would look like and if they would be sustainable.

Wanted to pick your brain on larger (15+) auction leagues. Do you prefer to spend big at the top or save money to make sure you get the mid-late guys you want? In a 15 team keep 6 6×6 (OPS and holds) with a $275 budget where I’m keeping Springer ($42), Lindor ($21), Inciarte ($1), Nola ($13) and Berrios ($10). Could potentially trade my $11 Michael Fulmer for a $61 Trout or $58 Goldschmidt, but that would mean going into the draft with 19 spots to fill and about $130.

Grey, need a trade opinion in a H2H points keeper league. Have a couple of trade offers on the table. I would trade Kluber (9th rd value) Blackmon (10th) and my 1st round pick (10th over all) for Sale (4th round value) Strasburg (5th) Bellinger (13th) and a 6th round pick. Also was offered Greinke (6th) and either Luis Castillo (13th) or Acuna (13th) and 3rd round pick for Kluber or Blackmon. What are your thoughts on any of those deals?

@Grey only holdup right now is I’d be out my 1st, 4th and 5th round picks in this deal with having to keep Sale and Stras, plus I traded my 3rd in another deal

Will there be Razzball NFBC leagues again?
My team last year was an absolute embarrassment, but I’m willing to give it another shot…to embarrass myself again!

@Grey: With the early season start I would say Feb 26 would be latest start date you would want. Average draft has been about 3 weeks with Razzers from what I remember.

Grey – My second year in a 12 team (2 catcher) 6X6 10 person keeper league. Looking fill my last keeper spot. Buxton, Betts, Mancini, Kershaw, Strasburg, Meyers, LeMahieu, Mazera, Osuna

My last spot – thoughts on Realmuto, Mejia, Arcia, Avi Garcia, Healy , Brinson or Bird

Am I thinking into it to much?

Are you in Tout Wars this season?

@Grey: The small contingency are of the old school variety. TBH, I’m all for limiting the time element advantage of the massive rosterbaters. I just know there are those that love the old way and it sucks for them. I still think you need to expand league types at some point to include deep leagues and H2H leagues. But that’s a whole different conversation.

@Grey: so then you have different champions for different leagues. It also gives you a whole new set of numbers for rudy to analbate with in the off season. Point is you need to think bigger. There are enough H2H comments to warrant considering it. The deep league could be a fun side thing that some writers can put together…like Ralph. He has nothing better to do

@Grey: analbate – a portmanteau for those who analyze/masterbate to the numbers.

We may hate H2H but the readers love them. That new writer needs to get on it

What are your thoughts on Domingto Santana after the Yellich trade? You have him ranked #154 but he’s going much higher in early ADP results (around 75th) and a few services have him ranked as high as #48. Those are pretty big differences. MILW has to trade him for pitching, right?
