Four score and seventeen-hundred rankings posts ago, my Fordfathers said, “Stop calling us Fordfathers, you idiot, it’s forefathers.” In order to form a more perfect fantasy baseball ranking system, we stopped ranking for fantasy baseball and simply said, “Eff it, let’s just let Grey rank 500 or so Mr. So-and-So’s.” Or, more succinctly, the top 500 for 2023 fantasy baseball. A few years ago, the top 500 was only a top 300 for fantasy baseball. Before that, it was 16 AD and I was drafting in one-person leagues because no one knew fantasy baseball or baseball. In a few years from now, this is going to be a top 10,000 and I’m going to be ranking Ronald Acuña Jr. Jr. Jr. Today, in this year, Twenty-Three after Twenty, comes the top 500 for 2023 fantasy baseball. Or as I like to call it, “Did he really rank Mr. So-and-So before Mr. So-and-So Jr.?” If Mr. So-and-So Jr. would stop chasing pitches in the dirt, I might’ve ranked him in front of Mr. So-and-So. This post isn’t meant to send shockwaves through your system. The pipe cleaner that the doctor uses to get the clogged wax from your ears is meant for that. This is simply to give you an idea of where guys are ranked in relation to other positions, i.e., you know I like Vaughn Grissom better than Brandon Lowe, according to the top 20 2nd basemen, but do I like Grissom better than Josh Jung? Okay, it’s not that simple. You should read the blurbs for all players, but this top 500 should give you an idea. You’ll notice after the top 200, positions start to get clumped together. I might be the only fantasy baseball ‘pert to tell you this, but it doesn’t matter where, say, Justin Turner is ranked vs. Alexis Diaz. If you need saves, Turner isn’t going to help you. He can be ranked 50 spots in front of Diaz and it doesn’t matter. That’s why I have the 2023 fantasy baseball rankings broken down by positions. If you need a 1st baseman, then Jose Miranda vs. Ty France matters, but where Miranda is ranked vs. Kodai Senga really doesn’t matter. Also, there’s no comments about players in this top 500, which you really should know prior to drafting. In other words, Shane Bieber might be in the 60s overall, but am I drafting him? Well, you’d know if you read my top 20 starters for 2023 fantasy baseball. There’s also a top 100 for 2023 fantasy baseball to help you. Also, there’s our online War Room, which is downloadable, and it comes free with Razzball Subscriptions.
Also, where I had omitted the free agent projections previously, here I filled them in because, well, it was getting confusing for me with open spaces. All free agents’ projections are based on neutral parks or best guesstimates where they will end up. Anyway, here’s the top 500 for 2023 fantasy baseball:

Quick question . I am in a keeper league in which u get to keep only 3 players from last season. I’m keeping Bichette and Cole. This league puts a emphasis on pitching. The final choice is between Scherzer or Goldsmith. Both could and probably will drop this year.. Who would u keep.? Thanks in advance.
Hard to know how much emphasis you’re talking about, it’s a toss up between Scherzer and Goldy
It’s out of balance with the scoring. U can stream a pitcher and win a week if the pitcher goes twice. Plus if a pitcher gets rocked he doesn’t lose that many point as Rt Sports or Fantrax. But he still has to be healthy and pitch.
Prolly worth it to keep Scherzer then
where do you rank Shohei an SP (since Yahoo breaks him into hitter and pitcher separate)
By Bieber, see: top 20 starters for 2023 fantasy baseball
Definitely the one stop shop from obscure Benny Mardones to the Geto Boys references to the best Fantasy baseball intel, it’s all here. Thank you sir!!
Ha No problem
So I got this trade offfer today, and I want to know what you think about it.
His Eloy Jimenez for my Gunner Henderson. What do you think?
Hold
Yeah, I liked the offer at first. But the more I look at it, the more I think Gunnar is the better value especially with this being a dynasty league. Henderson is five years younger, plays a premium position, and Eloy has dealt with a lot of injury issues. Eloy also appears headed toward a full-time DH role with Benintendi now set to play LF, so there’s that roster-flexibility problem. Hold is the right call. Thanks.
Crikey! I thought I was the only one projecting Jeff McNeil to bat .999
Who’s getting him out? Name the pitcher.
Mordecai woulda
Haha
Another day, another 400+. Time for a short break, enough nose typing. Great list by the way, got through 348…phew! Finish later. Gonna have to check out Hernan’s boy, he’s pretty high on him. Thank you boss!
Thanks!
Grey,
Was just offered this trade inmy keeper / Salary cap league
I get Fried ($21) and edman($20) and $10 in salalrycap for bregman ($26) and giolito ($32).
would you make the deal?
need an answer fast. im under the gun and he wants an answer.
Sounds fair
ok im accepting it. thanks.
No problem
Grey,
I obviously see how you rank them here, but how do you feel long term about Cristian Javier, Triston McKenzie, George Kirby?
If I could trade for any one of these 3 in a dynasty league (to be kept in the final round of the draft), would you rank them the same as you do in this top 500, or does the longer term outlook change things for you at all?
H2H categories league with QS as a category, for reference.
Kirby, Javier
Trade McKenzie
You did it again. How many years now doing the top 500?
Also, did I miss the NFBC draft and hold? Seems like I saw some chatter that maybe it already happened.
I did one with the commenters in November/December…But will do another one shortly…Maybe next week? Just need to set it up
Count me in!
2016 saw the first Top 500.
2015: Top 100 — Top 400
2014: Top 100 — Top 400
2013: Top 100 — Top 400
2012: Top 100 — Top 300
2011: Top 100 — Top 300
2010: Top 100 — Top 300
2009: Top 100 — Top 300
2008: Top 100
I don’t know how I didn’t do a top 500 before 2016, tbh
You were lazy.
HAHA
if Wander stays healthy but his R’s and RBI’s are >100 each, where do you rank him next year?
Also….will Razzball put out a points league list like this?
What does he do besides runs and RBIs?
Points league stuff will be along shortly
assuming those other stats are as you’ve projected, so lets say something like: 104/22/101/14/.291
He’ll be a top 30 player next year
Let’s say you were in a standard 12 team Yahoo Roto league Grey,
Would your draft strategy for pitchers, closers, or catchers change at all?
Most people tend to say they go for higher risk/reward in 12 team leagues but wondering what your plan would be
12 team leagues is what I’m talking about most of the time
Grey, thank you for all that you do and all the wisdom you bestow upon us. It is invaluable and much appreciated!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
No problem!
What an endeavor! Thank you for compiling this list! For some reason I always start at the bottom and work my way up! I noticed you had Turang higher than Ozwald Peraza…I was curious on your thought process here…do you think Bryce Turang will be better!! Thank you!
More faith in the Brewers playing Turang than the Yanks playing Peraza
Thanks for all the work Grey! I enjoy the excitement this builds for real baseball about as much as I do for fantasy purposes. It’s great stuff! With three little kids running around I don’t have enough time to keep up with competitive leagues anymore, but I’m still hanging onto one 10 team keep everyone team. Since it’s only 10 teams all the teams are stacked and every decision is pretty much splitting hairs. That being said, My pitching has gone a little wonky on me (We can roster 9 SP). On one hand, it’s full off top tier guys, on the other hand, it’s full of “Wearing flip-flops with socks guys” and a couple sleepers. Thinking I try to get some trade value out of the wearing flip-flops with socks tier to upgrade CF (we don’t have OF positions) or 2B (Lost Betts CF eligibility and Whitt 2B). We can’t actually make trades until after our draft, but out of this list, would you prioritize who you’d look to trade first? I’ll rank them in the order I’d start with.
Urias
Bieber
deGrom
Bassit
Valdez
Luzardo
Green
Gausman
I think I could possibly get Robert for Urias, but worry a little bit about carrying Eloy and Robert on the same team. Hopefully with a real manager on the bench they can keep these guys healthy.
It’s a H2H points league and generally I’ll stream the 9th SP slot, but the waiver wire definitely requires SON.
I know that’s a jumbled mess of information. Thanks in advance!
Thanks! Green as in Chad Green? I guess he’s towards bottom bc you can’t get anything for him?
I agree with how you have the laid out except I’d trade them away:
Urias
Bieber
deGrom
Luzardo, Bassitt then Framber
Robert for Urias is fair, but I’d prolly go for more like Luzardo or Bassitt for a lesser CF…Bit lower risk move, but it’s up to you
Green is Hunter Green. I had him at the bottom because of long term value. I wouldn’t expect to get a 2B or CF who would be as valuable for as long as Green’s upside?
With the points structure of the league guys like Bassitt and Luzardo’s points totals don’t translate to much more than waiver wire pickups or rookie flyers on the hitters side. We deduct 2 points for Ks on hitters. It suppresses a lot of power hitters value. Bassitt in our point system is worth around 600 points for the year. Guys like Yastrzemski, Bader, Riley Greene, Adam Duval all on waivers will come close to that. At that level of player, I generally just hold a rookie or breakout guys until closer to the playoffs hoping to strike gold. If they don’t work out after 2-3 weeks I’ll just pick up another guy. Hoping to snatch Hoerner up as a 2B late in the draft (I’ll probably only keep 18).
Thanks for all your advice. I know points leagues are tough without proper context.
Ah, that’s Greene
Yeah, my bad on that.
While we’re this far into it. Here’s the roster
Contreras
Freeman
2B
TreatUrner
Jimenez
CF
Acuna
Whitt Jr
Betts
Cruz
Bryant
Gausman
Bieber
deGrom
Urias
Valdez
H Greene
Bassitt
Luzardo
RP
RP
RP
RP
Bench
Bench
That’s a 3rd place roster and scored the 4th most points total
Doesn’t look too bad, just need a healthy Bryant and you might win it
A healthy deGrom come playoff time would be quite helpful. We shall see.
True, so don’t move him
Hi, Grey. Just noticed that you may have duplicated Mookie Best’s numbers for Cake Batter. I mean, I’d love 16 SB from Cake Batter, though
Oops, will fix
fixed, thanks!
12 team mixed 5×5 $260. can keep up to six (6) players: Bichette 26, Ohtani (UTL) 8, Verlander 1, Holmes 5, Pena 1, McCarthy 1, MJ Meldenz 1,Robbie Ray 1, Tatis 22, Lodolo 1, Amed Rosario 3. Pick my Six?!?!?!
Bo, Ohtani, Verlander, Tatis, then a bunch of coin flips…Do you have MI? I guess Pena and MJ
just an IF spot. leaning towards Pena… but then when Tatis comes back i have log jam until he gets OF… No to mccarthy?
Tatis has OF elig. already, no?
That’s why I said a coin flip, I like McCarthy too, I wrote a sleeper post about him
You jackanape, Ronald Acuña, Jr. Jr. Jr.’s real name is obviously Ronald Acuña, HR.
HAHA, *bows head* my bad
Great stuff! 14 team dynasty. I have Freeman and the team is not going to compete for a title this year. I am thinking now may be the best time to move him and look to get a package deal for him. Can you throw out some possible targets or what you think I could get in return. I was thinking of Casas, Joe Ryan and someone else. The team with the biggest interest has those two and Varsho, Adolis, Edman, Wander and tons of pitching. Thoughts?
Wander and Adolis sounds good…Casas and Ryan is selling short
How about Casas, Ryan and Adolis?
Meh, sounds fair, not great
Hi Strategy question for Mr. Grey and the gang:
In my auction last year there were 8 players that went for $40 or more and another 15 that went for $30 or more. I try to stick somewhat close to Grey’s auction values (with a little of my preferences baked in), which has 0 players valued at $40 or more and only 7 at $30 or more. As a result, I end up with ZERO first or second rounders, but get a bunch of 4th and 5th rounders, as others run out of auction dollars. I have been somewhat successful doing this and not chasing the big guys. But in a relatively standard 5×5 12-team league (only wrinkle is 2 catchers), it doesn’t feel right NOT getting any of the best players (hitters, really).
Thoughts?
Adjust auction values and go ‘over-value’ for one or more of the top picks, or stay the course and try to pick off the values when they fall?
Thank you.
You can go over to get top *hitters* if you want, I do sometimes in some leagues, but you have to know that’s gonna cost you money later
I’m in a similar league situation. At some point it’s about value and not just over spending to get a big guy. For example last year I had Trea Turner at $37 and JoRam at $34 and kept them both figuring there was still value there (I won the league going away). Meanwhile Bo and Vald jr went for over $40 at the draft and those owners didn’t fair as well. It’s especially true with the top pitchers. I used Grey’s advice last year and built a staff that got top points in pitching cats without spending more than $18 (Manoah) for any one pitcher.
Your $20 guys if picked right (again, ask Grey!) could return $10-15 value. There aren’t a lot of $30+ guys that can do that.
I expect Turner this year, whom I had to put back, along with Sosa and Albombso will hit that $40+ mark and I’ll likely be out on them and look for better bargains in that $20+ range.
Yeah, there ya go!
Thanks Grey and Sweatpants. That’s pretty much what I did last year. Stretched a dollar or two for Wander and Albies (ouch!) and then grabbed a bunch of guys for mid to high-teens (Eloy, O’Neill, India – ouch again) (Goldy, Arozarena – finally something nice). Ultimately finished high due to SPs (Manoah, McClan, Musgrove).
I recall toward the end of the draft I was regretting not spending more up front because there were only so many ‘bargains’ I could buy. Hard to thread the needle and spend for the big bat (or two), while leaving enough to get the guys you want at the end.
You sound like you got unlucky with some injuries…Load up on $25 players works too…So no top guys but you have great guys at all spots vs. your opponents who have some holes
Such a great resource. Thanks, Grey!
I thought I’d be able to keep Grissom as my SS but looks like yahoo only gives him 2B eligibility. Would you keep him or Muncy as 2B in OPS keeper?
Curious if you see Phillips as potential closer for LAD. He was a great pickup for NSVH last year.
No problem! Grissom
If you go to the top and enter LAD into the column for teams, and click the saves column you’ll see how I have the Dodgers saves allocated
Grey,
with all the big names signed early i kind of last track of major free agents left this year. can you put up the short list?
There are 5 free agents in the Top 500:
280 Luke Voit
359 Gary Sanchez
368 Jurickson Profar
372 Elvis Andrus
463 Jesus Aguilar
thanks VW!
Aguilar went to the A’s…That list tho, otherwise
OK. I was just using the info you provided. I believe #495 Fujinami is also on the A’s.
Ha, your first mistake! Ready for me to pass the buck? Teams come from Rudy
Hahaha
If I sign up for Patreon can I request a column to sort by AL and NL ?
You can sign up so you can buy me a pina colada and get the buy columns early, but I’ll give you the AL and NL free: https://razzball.com/playerrater-preseason-nlonly10team/
at top of that there’s AL too
Lotta Dansby love. Think I’ll have the chance to draft him in my keeper.. Random comparison but how is he above Altuve when you have Jose for 28 more R with higher AVG, and Dansby only has the 12 RBI advantage over him? Great stuff, thanks!
Altuve is older and more of a down side risk
Copy/paste error on Shohei’s pitching numbers – everything was placed 1 column to the left.
Yup, fixed!
Grey,
Fantastic rankings. They are truly one of a kind in the industry. I’ve followed your pitching rankings and no top pitchers strategy for years and it always works, which is why I’m shocked no one else has caught on, though I would prefer if you could somehow block the Twins front office from seeing that advice.
Anyhoo, I’m struggling with Ezequiel Tovar. You have him ranked lower overall than I would have expected. Rudy’s projections seem to love him. Are you down on him just due to Rockies prospblock concerns?
I could keep him or Grissom for 3 years for cheap, and I was leaning Tovar but now…
Haha, thanks! I don’t trust Black to play him, I go over him here https://razzball.com/ezequiel-tovar-2023-fantasy-outlook/
I’d go Grissom
really like Razzball its loaded with great content and always a go to even though I personally do one very large $$$ league ( 12 team $500 entry $5 per all transactions ) it’s H/H Points …
Thanks!
Phew. Another fine job. This is the only fantasy site one needs. Thanks for all the work you (and your staff writers) put in. I still don’t know how you find the time to write/analyze so much and still watch so many shows! Haha.
Also, saw a report yesterday that Aaron Ashby is still dealing with shoulder fatigue and is behind schedule. Sounds like more to come with that. Doesn’t affect where you have him- just passing it along because I’ve seen someone ask about him at some point.
Thanks! Ugh, that stinks on Ashby…Will leave him for now but monitor it
Grey!!!
Awesome!!
Why so down on Vesia (#431)? He might be the closer for LAD or vulture 10 wins? He’s my lowest ranked guy, I’m still hopeful he might do something. If not solidify WHIP and ERA and some Ks.
Cheers,
Ante
I rank fro saves on relievers, first and foremost, so they have Hudson, Phillips and Graterol, it’s a lot of competition
Fearless prediction…, A’s rule 5 pickup( from Dodgers Org) 1B Ryan Noda is a top 200 player, outgains that group of Tristan Casas/Josh Naylor/Wil Myers……A’s are always A’sing…, giving 500 plus PAs to out of nowhere guys….Cheers, Razzball For Life!!!!
I kinda like that now that I’ve look at Ryan Noda, not a terrible flyer
You are the Greytest, but I would have put Reese McGuire ahead of Sam Huff. JJ
Haha, thanks!
