“‘Yo, we’ll see you in the playoffs, baby bro!’ Right?! Hahahaha, that’s what Ronald Acuña Jr. said to Luisangel Acuña, right? Because Ronald is playing too, right?” Um, Comatose Braves Fan, how long have you been out? “Roughly six months, I miss anything?” So, Luisangel Acuña was called up this weekend with Lindor tweaking his back. Luisangel Acuña sounds more like a Jr., doesn’t he? Like the only reason one uses Luisangel is because it was daddy’s name. I’d like to see one family add Jr. onto all their kids. How much would that mess with people’s minds? “Here’s my brothers, Luisangel Acuña Jr. and Ronald Acuña Jr., and I am Grey Acuña Jr.” That would have people questioning shizz. Any hoo! Itch just went over Luisangel Acuña yesterday, saying, “Mets SS Luisangel Acuña(22) got the big call on Saturday to provide some versatility off the bench. To say he’s had a tough season would be underselling the reality of his 69 wRC+ and .299 on base percentage across 131 Triple-A games. He has struck out just 16.4 percent of the time, but that has brought with it a career low walk rate of 5.5 percent. If he can put some kind of approach back together, he probably has the hands to hang around as a utility bat. He’s stolen 40 bases (54 attempts) in those 131 games and can play a little all over the field, but he’ll likely open next season back in the minors to get the everyday at bats he needs and I needs to beat up Grey.” What? So, I don’t see any real reason to grab him, outside of NL-Only leagues, unless you’re chasing steals in shallower leagues. In his favor and not Francisco Lindor’s, Luisangel entered the game yesterday for the obviously hurting Lindor, so Luisangel Acuña Jr. might get some ABs, according to Grey Acuña Jr. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

David Peterson – 7 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 2.85. Benched all Mets’ starters this weekend in one weekly league and, boy, am I a Ding Dong Merchant. Just gave you my David Peterson fantasy after his last sparkle.

Alec Bohm – 1-for-4 as he was activated from the IL. Fun fact! If he married David Bell’s daughter, they might both take the surname, Bohm-Boone. Sorry, I just watched Chimp Crazy.

Cristopher Sanchez – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 3.24. Next year, as with every year, people will be saying you have to get an ace, then Cristopher Sanchez will be drafted around 175 overall and people will be like, “Meh,” and he’ll be the rock of your rotation yet again.

Gerrit Cole – 4 1/3 IP, 7 ER, ERA at 3.97. Is Gerrit Cole the worst pitcher on all my teams? No, but he feels like it. Expectations, he is not exceeding.

Aaron Judge – 1-for-2, 2 RBIs and a slam (53) and legs (9). Guy’s power petered out so much they didn’t even bother to get Roger Maris Jr. to stop plumbing for a month and follow him around. Snaking drains because Judge’s power was clogged.

Gleyber Torres – 2-for-5, 2 runs and his 14th homer. I joked last week that people were going to draft him next year based on what he did after being moved to the leadoff, but I honestly have no idea how to evaluate Gleyber for next year. He may not even be back with the Yanks. Imagine how awful Gleyber is on, say, the Pirates. I just shuddered.

Brayan Bello – 5 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 2 Ks, ERA at 4.60. I’m not Mr. Prospect Guy. Everyone knows this, but in the offseason I go over the top rookies for next year, so I was just perusing. Skimming. Thesaurus, give me another! Glancing over some possibilities and the Red Sox’s farm system is stacked. Where the O’s were last year? The Red Sox will be next year.

Tyler O’Neill – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 31st homer, hitting .254. Pays off that he’s been sleeping in a hotel room with no sharp edges and dressing inside a bubble.

Jose Berrios – 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 3.44. He’s had one of the biggest early-Katy Perry-type seasons. Singing Early Katy, “I’m hot, you’re cold, you’re yes, I’m no.” That nonsense? That’s been Berrios. April? 1.19 ERA. May and June? 4.70 and 4.85. July? 6.08! August 2.50 and September 1.38.

Davis Schneider – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 12th homer, 2nd homer in two games. Are we sure Schneider isn’t just a Septacular hitter? Whatever the case, hot schmotato alert!

Kyle Gibson – 5 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 1 K, ERA at 4.11. I cannot tell a lie, said while wearing a powdered wig, I was looking at Gibson’s starts for the last week, because these weekend starters could be lined up for a final week 2-start week. Streamonator can help too.

Lars Nootbaar – 2-for-4 and his 10th homer. Can’t believe his parents didn’t name him Mars. What a missed opp.

Joey Cantillo – 5 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.99. After draft, “I’m just happy to get Glasnow and Freddy Peralta. Should be good to go for my H2H playoffs.” Now, “Will Joey Cantillo make two more starts or THREE!!! I must know!!!” (Two, I think.)

Ben Lively – 5 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 2 Ks, ERA at 3.87 vs. Taj Bradley – 4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 4.39. Next year there’s no doubt Taj goes in front of Lively, but is anyone that smooth-brained to think they can’t clearly be inverse in fantasy value?

Michael Wacha – 5 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 3.29. Thank you, Wacha, for being a true blue Wacha.

Jared Jones – 4 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.85. It rhymes with mutt hem frown, which sounds like a Terrier/Beagle mix working in a Fanatics sweat shop, and in much the same way: Shut him down!

Brent Rooker – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 37th homer. Getting to 40 homers, B. Rooker or by crooker.

Bryan Ramos – 2-for-3 and his 2nd homer, hitting .209. White Sox won their 2nd game in a row, are the playoffs out of reach? That, and can you eat a 3D printed muffin, after the break!

Max Scherzer – 4 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.95 as he was activated from the IL. Rangers got back deGrom and Scherzer right in time for the playoffs! What’s that? Oh, sad.

Andrew Heaney – 5 IP, 3 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.89. Thinking about the poor person who had their H2H playoff relying on Heaney. Nothing ever good came from “trusting Heaney.”

George Kirby – 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, zero walks, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.62. After his previous start, I was gonna move him out of my lineup for this week’s start, and maybe I still will, but now I’m freakin’ conflicted!

Ronel Blanco – 6 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 2.88. I could say the Astros cheat better than any other team, and who knows, but, without hard evidence, I have to assume they just coach up their pitchers so well. In fact, call him So Well Blanco, because he goes to the pen then shoved back in the rotation and doesn’t miss a beat.

Jason Heyward – 3-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and a slam (8) and legs (5). If this is the final hooray for Heyward, I have to say he looks better than most of the other stars of the 2016 Cubs, but you and I, us non-baseball players, look better than them.

Taylor Ward – 1-for-3 and his 24th homer, 2nd homer in four games. I cannot for the life of me understand why Ward’s hitting leadoff, but I’m also not on cocaine.

Michael Busch – 3-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 19th and 20th homer, hitting .257. Busch was in Coors, which sounds like an excuse for a BevMo refund.

Corbin Burnes – 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 3.06. One thing that is clear with pitching: There’s enough terrible teams in the league that even if you don’t have your best stuff or you’re just not that good, you can gut out a decent season. This start was vs. the Tigers. Supposedly a playoff-contending team, but they are bottom third in just about all hitting categories.

Heston Kjerstad – 0-for-2 as he was activated from the “I see fluttering butterflies around my head” IL, as he hit cleanup. Prolly just a part-time player, which sounds like an updated version of Stevie Wonder’s Part-Time Lover.

Adley Rutschman – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 19th homer, hitting .254. That he’s hitting after Kjerstad says all you need to know about Adley’s season.

Cade Povich – 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 5.74 vs. Keider Montero – 5 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 1 K, ERA at 4.60. They will meet again next week in a rematch, because, of course, two long-time rivals like the Orioles and Tigers in different divisions should be meeting multiple times in September. Smart stuff from MLB.

Riley Greene – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 22nd and 23rd homer, 2nd and 3rd homer in a week. Wanna know how sad the outfield position is? Audience refrain, “How sad is it?” Riley Greene missed about 30 games this year, is having a just-okay season, and he’ll likely be a top 20 outfielder on the Player Rater. At end of the year, I’ll be going over all the positions, but outfield is surprisingly meh.

MacKenzie Gore – 6 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 4.17. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, NO! You won’t rope me in again next year. Though, let me see your xFIP.

James Wood – 2-for-3 and his 6th and 7th homer. Also in this game, Jonah Bride (2-for-4, 2 runs) hit his 7th homer. Honeymoon period not over when you get Wood twice in one day with Bride.

Nick Martinez – 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 hits, zero walks, 6 Ks, ERA at 3.37. Streamonator actually has Martinez as a slight positive next time (not a good start, just not a negative dollar value), and I streamed him for this week’s two starts, and, welp, looks like I’m in for another.

Rhett Lowder – 5 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 1.74. Went to look at his stats page, expecting to have my eyes dazzled. “Be dazzled,” I said to my eyes, and started to glue fake gemstones on my pupils and now I want to unglue my eyes.

Carlos Santana – 3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs and his 22nd homer, hitting .243. Looking at all the 1st basemen Carlos Santana is in front of on the Player Rater and my guitar gently weeps.

Tyler Glasnow – Likely out the rest of the season. On one hand, he had his career high in innings. On the other hand, it was only 134 IP. On a third hand that is Hamburger Helper, he can’t lift one hand because of his elbow sprain.

Jack Flaherty – 3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 3.04. He’s already in Dodgers playoff mode.

Walker Buehler – 6 IP, 1 ER, 8 baserunners (5 BBs), 5 Ks, ERA at 5.54. Not trying to be a hater my entire life, but five walks is, how do you say, freakin’ awful. Not sure what happened to Buehler — Buehler? Buehler? Any ideas? — but he’s not right.

Jackson Chourio – 3-for-6, 2 runs, 5 RBIs and his 21st homer, hitting .276. Top 25 draft pick in 2025? Yay or no yay?

Ryne Nelson – Hit the IL with shoulder inflammation. Shame about the Ryne. That’s all I got, nothing *pinkie to mouth* pithy.

Brandon Pfaadt – 1 2/3 IP, 8 ER, ERA at 4.81. Brandon’s the one excuse to Pfaadt shame.

O’Neil Cruz has 14 appearances at CF. Does his value for 2025 change any with Ss and OF eligibility next year? Assuming he gets to the 20 appearances this season.

Afternoon & Happy Collect Rocks day… which is about all I’m doing after losing last week resulting in playing for a bronze.

Well, Bronze is still better than whatever you get for 4th; which leads to my question:

Reese Olson just activated. SON doesn’t like it, but you rolling him out tonight @KC?

Thanks as always!

So after ducking Peralta’s last start at ARI (5 IP, 5 K, 6 H (but also 4 BB for a WHIPping post refrain)), I do wonder if I should duck him at home vs. ARI. SON really likes it at $33. What say ye, Grye?

Thanks for all your help this year; finals week!!
Head to Head, weekly, ESPN, 5X5
A few questions;

  1. Staring Skubal (@KC) and Gilbert (@TEX) … need 3 of the following, Bibee (vs Minn), Sonny Gray (vs Pit), Flaherty (@Mia), Musgrove (vs ChW)
  2. Strategy Question, we start 5 SP’s and 3 RP’s – my opponent has 12 starts!! He starts only 1 Closer (Heisley). With my staff (listed above) I only have 5 total starts. Would you consider benching an extra starter and going Relief Pitcher heavy? Instead of 5 SP’s I could go with 4 and move Mason Miller to SP and start Hader, Suarez and Erceg at RP. Hopefully securing Saves and good chance at ratios. Little chance at Wins and K’s. Or just stay with 5 SP’s and 3 RP’s? My starters have good matchups and have been relatively consistent all year.
  3. Catcher questions incoming …. O’hoppe (3 vs ChW/4@HOU) or Alverez (3 vs Wash/4 vs PHIL) Alverez seems to be coming around and O’hoppe has been pretty shaky lately.

Thanks for you assistance, look forward to your reply.

Made the finals, thank you for your help. H2H, points, weekly lineups. Two questions:

First, my opponent’s rotation has 8 pitcher starts to my 6 so I’m looking to add volume if it makes sense. What do you think of starting Yu Darvish with two starts over Flaherty with just one?

Darvish vs HOU (101 wRC+ v RHPs away, 13th in MLB) and vs CHW (72 wRC+ v RHPs away, last in MLB)

Flaherty @ MIA (89 wRC+ v RHPs, 28th in MLB)

Flaherty didn’t look so good @ ATL yesterday whereas Darvish looked solid @ SEA. I’m leaning Darvish.

Second, Steven Kwan is out today with back soreness. Lineups lock for the week at 6:40 pm (first game begins). Would you start Pete Crow Armstrong (3 v OAK, 4 v WAS) instead? If not, would you start PCA over Lane Thomas (4 v MIN, 3 @ STL)?

Thank you again.

Matt Adams, aka Fat Adams, announced his retirement today, even though he hasn’t played since 2021.

Fun fact, a former neighbor of mine was actually named Matt Adams. The walls in my apartment were paper thin, so I always had to be careful when talking about Fat Adams when he was fantasy relevant for a short period. Though my neighbor did have a beer gut, he wasn’t fat by any other definition, and could have easily whooped my ass if he thought I was talking about him.

First, thank you for all the great info/advice/humor once again this season. Razzball is a true gem…like quartz or formica. (I’m not a geologist.)

H2H semifinals. Giancarlo is currently my bench bat and has the day off, so I might be getting overly antsy but considering potential moves. Looking at 2B/OF. (Have Steer as my current 2B, Reds have off day.)

1.) Hold Stanton (3@SEA, 3@OAK)

2.) Drop Stanton and stream/keep any of the following for today:
Diner-Falafel @StL (4@StL, 3@CIN)
B. Donovan v. PIT (4v.PIT, 3@CLE)
I. Paredes v. OAK (4v.OAK, 3v.WAS)

3.) Drop Stanton, stream one of the above today then drop for any of the following:
T. O’Neil (3@TB, 3v.MIN)
P. Smith (3@COL, 4@MIL)
Nimmo (3v.WAS, 4v.PHI)
Meadows (3v.KC, 3@BAL)
Nootbar (4v.PIT, 3@CLE)

Hi Grey,

Cortes is at Seattle
Quintana is home vs Wash

Would you pick up either.

If yes who would you drop?

Several options:

1. Herz at NYM
2. Joe Musgrove vs CWS
3. Clarke Schmitt at Seattle

or pass and keep these three

or pick up one of Cortes or Quintana?

How would you prioritize these five?

thanks as always!!!

Made the finals. H2H weekly lineup, points (-1 for K).

I’m two pitching starts short of my opponent this week so I could use volume. How do we feel about Yu Darvish vs HOU (101 wRC+ v RHPs away, 13th in MLB) , and vs CHW (72 wRC+ v RHPs away, last in MLB) this week? I’m leaning toward Yu over Flaherty @ MIA (89 wRC+ v RHPs, 28th in MLB) under the circumstances. Flaherty gave up 4 ER in 3 IP with 4 BBs @ ATL yesterday whereas Yu went 5 IP, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K @ SEA in his last start.

Guardians saying Steven Kwan has back soreness but won’t go on IL (for whatever it’s worth, not much). I notice Hittertron has him penciled for 5 games in a 7 game week. Hopefully, we get an update before today’s game (when lineups lock). If Kwan is out today, do you like any of these options better for the week:

Crow-Armstrong 3 v OAK, 4 v WAS (Hot bat, but faces 4 LHPs this week if we think that matters as a lefty hitter)

Doyle 3 v ARI, 3 @ LAD. (he has gone cold)

K. Carpenter 3 @ KC, 3 @ BAL (faces 2 LHPs, which means it’s a 4 game week for him)

Leaning PCA.

Thank you for your help, as always. Bobbas heading your way regardless of final outcome.

Well Grey, we’ve managed to make it back to the championship in my 10 team H2H points keeper league! It’s a 2 week matchup to help even out the randomness that can happen inside of one week of imaginary baseball. Shane Baz hit the FA list in an effort for someone to pull off a miracle comeback last week (didn’t happen) and is still there this morning after clearing waivers overnight. I could drop Arrighetti to waivers and skip his start that SON doesn’t love today @ SD (.9) and pick up Baz for tomorrow vs. BOS that SON is pretty high on (12.4). Arrighetti would remain on waivers until Wednesday and I could use my #1 waiver claim spot to pick him back up for his start later this week vs LAA?

Could also just drop Montas that SON isn’t high on tomorrow vs PHI, but he’s been pretty great with MIL as you pointed out last week.

Could also drop either of Megil vs WSH or G Williams vs MIN and pick up Baz, but SON is higher on the other two than Baz.

ESPN 12 team points league playoffs.. i understand that two starts aren’t necessarily better than one, but with that in mind, would you put in any of these three two-start pitchers over the one start pitchers:

A. Suarez vs SF (Snell) vs DET (TBA)
Baz vs BOS (Pivetta) vs TOR (Bassitt)
Montas vs PHI(Wheeler) Maybe vs ARI (Montgomery)

Eovaldi @TOR(Bassit)

Also for pitching, please rank your top 3 streamers:

Irvin is the only one out of those on the road for both starts. The others are at home. Would you swap him out with any of the above?

Thanks again,

Grey how do I communicate to my players that this is the week I really need them to play well for me? Do I try telepathy? Getting a plane and flying by with a banner? Having an OF model send my players a special message? What do you recommend?

Tell each of them that (in a drunken haze) they promised a sick child they would hit 2 homeruns! (And not just 1 homerun and a triple and an error!)

Last Monday of the season! Thanks again for all your help. One more round of questions for you before this week’s rosters lock.

Kyle Tucker showing some signs of life despite seeing the bench every game or two, hitting a homer pinch hitting on Saturday. My other options are Crews and Wood, who both had a ok week last week, Wood turning it on late. Leaning towards keeping Tucker on the bench but am I crazy?

Pitching this week, I can start Baz at home against Boston and Toronto, or Hunter Brown at SD. Could use the extra start for QS chances and cumulative strikeouts and the robot doesn’t love Brown’s single start either. I also have the option for a Ranger Suarez two step at Brewers and at Mets, but he’s not made it 6 innings since July, velocity is way down, and he was shelled last games. Roll with Baz?

Thanks again for everything and have an excellent offseason!!!

Weekly lineup lock playoffs, points league H2H. I have a 2-start vs. 1-start question because the projections look wonky.

Do I start any 1 start guys over these 2 start guys?

B. Miller- @MIA, COL 30.5pts (SON loves this guy)
Arrighetti – @SD, LAA 28.5 pts
J. Montgomery- @COL, @MIL 12.4 pts (SON hates these, but CBS site projects 25pts.)

Eflin – SF 17.25 pts
Kirby – @TEX 13.15 pts
Ober – @CLE 13.5
Sanchez – @NYM 13.8

Better chance of A QS. Skabul at K.C. Ragans versus Detriot. Or Yamamoto 2 starts Atl. And The Rockies. Need Two. Or pick up Flaherty on the road against the Marlins.

AL-only, which cruddy Yankee do I drop–Verdugo or Rizzo? HR and Avg are the only stats that have any chance of moving in the standings, though neither is especially likely.

Crunch time in the semi finals and need your help Grey! H2H 10 team 7×5 categories:

1) Merrill 6 games HOU/CWS or Abrams 7 games @NYM/@CHC – Hitteron has Abrams playing but he has missed last 3 games

2) my pitching lineup. I have a lot of volume and quality 1 start options:

Shota 2 starts (locked in) OAK/WSH

Need 3 from the following group:
Fried 2 starts LAD/@MIA
Arrighetti 2 starts @SD/LAA
Pivetta 2 starts @TB/MIN
Kikuchi 1 start LAA
Eflin 1 start SF

3) RPs and P (SP/RP) spot:
Hader (locked in)
Helsley (locked in)

Need 1 from the following group:
Mason Miller @CHC/NYY
Duran @CLE/@BOS
Or any of the 1 or 2 start pitchers above you didn’t have in your top 3.

My opponent has Munoz and Sir Anthony as his 2 RPs so I can probably win saves with Hader and Helsley and go another SP with the P slot. He also has 6 total SP starts with Burnes, Nola, Sonny Grey, Ranger Suarez and Eovaldi.

Thanks!

I know it’s early but when you get bounced out of the playoffs on the last day of regular season you’ve got put it behind and think about next season. In a 12 team 5×5 (H2H lineup with daily changes, which six are you keeping:

Rutschman
Olson
Albies
Norby
Lindor
Jung
Vientos
Judge
Duran
J.Lowe
Rafaela

Yamamoto
Kirby
King
R.Walker
Yates

Judge, Lindor, Duran for sure. Who are your next three?

Welp. Even though I drafted Bobby Miller in the 8th round, here I ‘am in the championship round. In fact everything I have done up until this point is to shove it in the face of Bobby Miller and show him we never needed him and his 100mph FB, wicked secondary’s, and infectious smile anyway! WE DID IT IN SPITE OF YOU BOBBY!!!

So this is the 12 teamer H2H OBP league. I have only one dilemma….Buxton or Gurriel(Thinking he plays by Wednesday at worst) for that last spot? And Littell over Pepiot and Mize id assume?

Hey Grey! With a little help from you and Bowden Francis, I survived the H2H semis. One more week to go, and I have a new, dirty, dirty strategy Q.

I’m going all in on SV/HD and ratios, punting Ks and QS. I have one add left to make this week. I have seven relievers and three SPs: Bowden Francis (@TEX Weds), Matthew Boyd (vs MIN today), and—here’s where it gets so dirty—Reid Detmers (vs CHW today).

My question: are you starting Boyd and Detmers no matter what today? Or would you:

A) Start Boyd and if it goes well, bench Detmers. Still start Bowden Wednesday.
B) Bench both today. Wait for Bowden’s start on Wednesday and go from there.
C) Something else

Thanks!

The top 7 on the Player Rater are unchanged from last Monday. It looks like the top 4 for the season are set:

2 Aaron Judge $60.80
3 Bobby Witt Jr. $54.80
4 Jose Ramirez $49.00
5 Juan Soto $41.60
6 Gunnar Henderson $41.50
7 Elly De La Cruz $40.20

I am approaching our Game Started Limit and have to be even more strategic than usual because ratios, IP, K and QS are extremely close. It could mean the difference between an extra keeper or not. How do you feel about the following not hurting ratios and more likely to get the QS? Are you starting the following?

Arrighetti @ Padres
Yu at home vs Astros
Manaea at home vs Nationals

Morning Grey,

For next season, who would you choose as your keeper between James Wood and Dylan Crews and why? I appreciate the advice.

Grey!!!

Amazing!!!

a. In my roto dynasty start Pallante (facing Skenes)? Need W but there is slim to none options available today.

b. What’s your take and that of the room on teams purposely tanking to get a better position in a 5-round FYPD for next January?

c. Special Norm MacDonald (RIP) quote of the day for September 16, 2024

This week at the OJ Simpson trial, the bloody glove was finally introduced into evidence. OJ didn’t help things by blurting out ‘Hey, there it is. I’ve been looking all over the place for that thing!’

d. Chris Rock quote of the day for September 16, 2024

I’m severely overrated. I’m just above a hack. That should be the name of my new DVD: ‘Chris Rock: Slightly Above Hack’.

Cheers,
Ante

Another thing about Berrios and the reason I went with him as my last SP for the matchup is that he has 7 straight Ws. Oooh, that elusive W.
