Funny thing about the end of the season is there’s no tomorrow. It’s like James Bond shizz. I’m Goldeneye and I’m painted gold and I’m seducing you at a roulette wheel while you croupier and you can’t pay attention. I say, “There’s no tomorrow,” and you say, “Are you a calendar?” And I say, “Funny, Mr. Bond, wait that’s me in this scenario.” It’s very alluring for both of us. This part of the year is really: No Tomorrowsville. Population: Us. I say this because if this were May, I’d say sell David Peterson (6 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 11 Ks, ERA at 2.75). He looks like a mess under the hood. Nothing is as it seems. Now? I’m shrugging and saying give me every start of his until he completely disintegrates into magnesium because of this dye I put into his gin and tonic. Sorry, Mr. Peterson, I am James, Bond that is. That’s not how he says it either, is it? Then, in an unrelated game that illustrates how you have to play matchups, Cade Povich (7 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 5 hits, 11Ks, ERA at 5.76). Streamed him in two leagues, and wish it was more. Know why? Streamonator? Yes, but also he was vs. the Shite Sux! Do I trust Povich? Novich. There is no tomorrow! It was a good matchup, now move on. By the by, I’ve come up with the best idea: Every game after their MLB-record loss, the White Sox should be forced to send up to the plate GM Chris Getz and owner Jerry Reinsdorf. Let’s see them wear one. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Francisco Lindor – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 30th homer. Feels like slowly people are starting to come around to how valuable Lindor is, but don’t think it’s fully there either. I’m as guilty as anyone, because he should likely have been a top 10 pick this year, which I didn’t do, and next year, which I likely won’t do.

Pete Alonso – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 31st homer. Albombso!

Mark Vientos – 1-for-4 and his 22nd homer, hitting .281. Now hitting third! [biting wrist like Lenny & Squiggy] Ugh, I’m gonna like Vientos so much next year.

Kutter Crawford – 6 IP, 2 ER, 1 hit, 2 walks, 8 Ks, ERA at 4.08. He was simply bested by a better pitcher on a random Tuesday in September, which is not a Buzz Bissinger book.

Xavier Edwards – 0-for-5 as he was activated from the IL. Oh, my sweet boy, X-Ed is back! X-Ed where we learn how to put condoms on bananas and watch him collect runs and SBs.

Keibert Ruiz – 3-for-4, 2 runs and his 13th homer. Keibert rounds the bases by hopping and yelling, “@&*?&(!*!!(%@”

Carlos Santana – 2-for-3 and his 19th homer. Santana is the only Twins’ regular who doesn’t get hurt. They should do blood transfusions with him and every player.

David Festa – 5 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.75. He likes to karamu, he likes to Festa. Dave Party should be shut down soon, but: Do teams care about IP limits anymore?

Jeffrey Springs – 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 3.27. ‘Member my love for Springs coming into last year? Well, you don’t have to, but it was there in a huge way. Yes, huge! What are you my prom date?

Kyle Schwarber – 5-for-6, 4 runs, 6 RBIs and his 29th, 30th, 31st homer. Not technically true, but I’m pretty sure he’s hit 31 homers in five games, and oh-for-300 in the other games. Learned my lesson in doubting The Schwarbomb, but you have to admit: Homey goes from hero to zero quicker than Ronald Miller.

Daulton Varsho – 1-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 18th homer, 2nd homer in two games. Hot schmotato alert if he’s available, but I imagine he won’t be.

Addison Barger – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 7th homer, 2nd homer in three games. Mentioned this the other day (Monday?), but the Jays are not to be trifled with, as Samuel L. Jackson might say.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 4-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 28th homer, hitting .328. Unrelated, but was talking about this with the Razzball writers yesterday: Bo Bichette next year is on the board at 200th overall, are you drafting him?

Chris Bassitt – 5 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 12 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.30. That start is: Siri, show me the worst possible start while also being a semi-decent start.

Chad Green – 2/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA up to 2.72, and his 2nd hideous outing in two. He couldn’t give up a run or two here and there? He had to give up six runs in less than two innings out of nowhere? Man, he really went sideways fast. Jays don’t really have a replacement to close. Maybe Genesis Cabrera, but he’s a lefty.

Chris Sale – 7 IP, 0 ER, 6 hits, zero walks, 9 Ks, ERA at 2.46. Haven’t said a ton about Sale this year, but he’s been the best starter in baseball not named Skubal. Sale was drafted around 150th overall.

Tanner Bibee – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 3.56. I keep streaming hitters vs. the Guards’ pitchers, and that does not seem like a smart idea.

Lucas Erceg – 2/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 3.88, in the 8th inning. Love when supposed closers just stop closing. It’s like the most abrupt ghosting.

Justin Steele – Scratched from his start with elbow soreness. A’la Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar screaming, “Oh c’mon!” Sucks if you were relying on him, but I hope they shut him down.

Paul Skenes – 5 IP, 0 ER, 8 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 2.13. Someone kidnap him for three weeks so they’re forced to shut him down. Please.

Paul Goldschmidt – 3-for-5, 3 RBIs and a slam (21) and legs (9). Au Shizz! Saw the other day Goldschmidt tell a reporter he was not retiring after this year. Always a good sign when a player is being asked that. For what it’s Cronenworth, if Au Shizz goes 25/12/.250 this year (well within the realm of possibility), there’s worse lines.

Joey Ortiz – 1-for-3 and his 10th homer. Ortiz is shaping up to be one of my most boringest sleepers for next year. Just prime Grade A boring but valuable.

Jackson Chourio – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 19th homer. What he is doing is not normal for a rookie. We are seeing the beginning of greatness.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. – Hit the IL with a strained calf. Don’t have a cow, man.

Randal Grichuk – 3-for-5, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and his 7th and 8th homer, 2nd and 3rd homer in three games, third and fourth homer in a week. Hot schmotato alert!

Christian Walker – 1-for-5, 1 RBI as he was activated from the IL. Kevin from ESPN’s Get Him In The Lineup Department said, “Tuesdays after a holiday are always tough. Try me again tomorrow.”

Ryne Nelson – 6 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 9 Ks, ERA at 4.15. Ryne’s showing what a barely 2 BB/9 can do for a pitcher. Make him rosterable.

Mike Yastrzemski – 2-for-4, 3 runs and his 13th homer, 2nd homer in two games, and suddenly hitting leadoff. Carl’s Jr. Jr. now serving a hot schmotato.

Corbin Carroll – 2-for-5, 2 runs and his 23rd and 24th steal. Woohoo! Way more enthused to see steals than his frequent 2nd half homers. Maybe he’s not done at 24. Who’d thunk it?

Mookie Betts – 2-for-5, 4 RBIs and a slam (15) and legs (14). Mookie Best!

Walker Buehler – 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 5.67 vs. Reid Detmers – 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 10 Ks, ERA at 5.87. This matchup was billed as, “God damn it, they’re gonna make me believe again!”

Taylor Ward – 1-for-4 and his 20th homer, 2nd homer in two games, third homer in four games, as he leads off now. Why would he leadoff right when he starts hitting for power? Ron Washington said, “Wanna see helicopters?” as he rubbed his nose.

Logan O’Hoppe – 1-for-3 and his 18th homer. He is what he is, but when I saw him in the lineup I noticed Brandon Drury was hitting behind him. Drury is hitting .161! In 81 games! Holy fudge. Only I didn’t say fudge.

Lawrence Butler – 1-for-4 and his 21st homer. 1st homer in September, after hitting eight in August. The ol’ 45+ homer pace. Oh, he hit 10 homers in July. The ol’ 60-homer pace! That’s right, Butler didn’t even start hitting until July.

Seth Brown – 3-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 13th homer, hitting .242, he hit .308 in August and this was his third homer in a week. If it’s Brown, don’t flush it down.

J.T. Ginn – 6 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.30 vs. Luis Castillo – 7 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.60. This takes us back to the opening lede. Ginn or Castillo? What do the matchups say? To me (and the league) vs. the M’s is easier than vs. the A’ss.

Carlos Rodon – 6 IP, 1 ER, 1 hit, 2 walks, 11 Ks, ERA at 4.19. A sneaky terrible hitting team? Rodon’s opponent, the Rangers. Though, Clay Holmes might disagree. If you can stream against them right now, you have been advised, said like Nick Capozzi. (Throwback!) Streamonator loves Rodon’s next one yet again, by the by.

Clay Holmes – 1/3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 3.27, and his 11th blown save. Aaron Boone watching a fish flapping in a boat, just pulled from the water, dying for five months straight, “Just not his night, but I’m sure he’ll be fine tomorrow.”

Jon Gray – Done for the year due to his foot. Never would’ve happened with the metric system.

Wyatt Langford – 1-for-5, 4 RBIs and his 10th homer, 2nd homer in two games, as he hit the death blow off Holmes. Maybe Langford is only good in March and September. Things that make you go hmm…

Andrew Heaney – 5 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 3.81. Have managed to not stream Heaney once all year and my doctor says my blood pressure is normal for a man 20 years my senior! (It was 30!)

Josh Jung – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs and a slam (6) and legs (4), as he hit third. Finally! I liked Josh H. Smith there for a while, but Josh Hollywood-Hogan Smith hasn’t done anything in about six weeks.

Corey Seager – Sat out yesterday and will have his workload managed the rest of the season. Not to get all boomer here, but he can’t play a full season, even when healthy? Rest from October to March, you large scale baby!

Heres hoping Moms spaghetti can get this changed to an error to put his ERA at 27 instead of 81.

Gotta ask the Kirby owners how they did it. I got Steer and of course Arrighetti and for whatever reason Steer abstained from the violence.

In July I thought I had a no-doubt keeper in Taj Bradley next year for 4 bucks. I’ll be in my playoffs soon and don’t know if it’s worth holding on to him to ride the bench against Boston and possibly Tigers (the trust is low).

Is he a drop or is the juice worth the squeeze long-term?

H2H Points can keep five.

Other than Taj my best options seem to be…

Degrom – 7
Sonny Gray – 12
Bryce Miller – 12
Bibee – 16
Devers – 30
Josh Naylor – 11
Ryan Walker – 6 (would be real speculative)
Ryan Helsey – 14

I was nervous about the Francis start today. He didn’t quite slay the dragon, but he survived and got past it without incurring a ton of damage. That was not a good matchup. He should be an auto start from this point forward right? vs nym, @ tex, @ tb, vs mia.

Need a Seager replacement for the rest of this week (my championship week ugh) in 5×5 h2h, util slot. Position doesn’t matter just going for across the board likely production rest of this week only.

Jung/Adolis (v NYY, 4 vs LAA)
Muncy/Edman (@LAA, 3 v CLE)
Swanson/Paredes (v PIT, 3 vs NYY)
Yandy (2 v MIN, 2 @BAL)
Ward (vs LAD, 4@TEX)

Nice job Grey! Pissed him off and he took his ball and went hom….to the IL!

Man I hate losing hope so early on, but I think I am screwed. Naylor and Seager out. Opponent killing me in hitting now, has 10 HR already (Freeman finger is fine I guess, Schwarber, and Langeliers, and stinking Ward). Ive got two.

SS – Dejong or JSmith?

Util – Toglia cold, Soler ice cold, I could add Grichuk who is hot in AZ and of course 3-5 2HR yesterday = bench today, or add S. Brown.

Thanks!

I have written several times about trades involving a Yankee collector in my H2H league. Well, here are the standings in the final week of the regular season: I am in 1st place, virtually assured of receiving a bye in the 1st round of playoffs. Yankee collector in 10th place, virtually assured of missing playoffs. Here are the trades I won with him this season:
1) Holmes for Hader
2) Rodon for M. King
3) Torres for Machado
He also traded: Ozuna for McMahon (then traded McMahon for LeMahieu), Clase for Cole. I will give him credit for winning a trade for Soto (giving up Olsen & McCormick). Anyway, a lesson in how to fall from 1st place to 10th in a few months: trade away great players for weaker players, and half your lineup be guys that are under 50% rostered.

That Ozuna one is bonkers. At no point has Ozuna been bad this year. His worst streak is probably some mundane 2-15 stretch over 4 games. McMahon and then for DJ when he is hurt is just bonkers. That one and Machado were awful. Clase too I suppose but depends on timing.

12 son got a ball at the giants game last night and gave it to a 3 or 4 year old girl sitting next to us. great moment.

kid and i made up a between innings game last night. one person proposes a team and a stat category. for example mariners and doubles. other person can either pass or guess which mariner leads the team in that category. if he passes, the proposer can score 1 point by correctly identifying the team leader in that category.

if the guesser makes a guess the proposer can pass or challenge.

if the proposer passes, the guesser gets 1 point for any guess plus a bounus point if he correctly identifies the leader.

if the proposer challenges he has to guess a player who ranks higher in that category for the team (more mariner doubles). if his challenge guess is better, he scores a point plus a bonus point if the player guessed leads the team.

if the challenge is lower ranked than the original guesser scores a 2 point plus a bonus point if the original guess was the team leader.

good luck wading through that!

Weekly H2H points. Playoffs start on the 16th and I’m in the semis and hopeful for the ‘ship the next week, but could use help now on what are essentially bye weeks in getting ready.

1) How worried are we on Corey Seager’s time management issue. Would it be overkill to drop now and try to pick someone up like a Bleday (shifting Horner from 2nd to SS) or is it smarter to hold and see how they deploy him then make a move for the hot hand/good schedule closer to my Semi?

2) Holmes a drop? Blown saves are penalized as much as converted saves are rewarded and even though Yankees don’t seem like they’re ready to make a move should I? Replacements are truly meh: Garret, Ginkle, Puk, Cousins, Jiminez. Is this also a hold?

3) SP- Blanco’s gotta go because of move to pen. Could open another spot by dropping Gallen (@rockies, then @brewers, then vs padres) or hold because that brewers start is worth it?

4) Could you rank the following? Heaney (vs mariners, @angels), Detmers (vs Whitesox, sit against Houston, @ Rangers), Bassit (@rays, vs Marlins), Povich (vs Tigers, @ twins)

Sorry that’s so much! Basically trying to do what I can before the real games start and want to find that balance between being proactive and shooting myself in the foot.

Afternoon & Happy National Wildlife Day!

Boy am I glad I benched Bassitt yesterday! …kicking myself for not grabbing Povich though. White Sox are just slightly better than a t-ball team!

Questions for today:

  1. Yu Darvish… I know you probably don’t trust his 1st start back, but SON seems to like it. What’s your gut tell ya?
  2. Lucas Erceg – got blown up yesterday, but is he worth adding for Saves?
  3. there is no 3
  4. David Bednar – relegated to setup, but looked better past couple outings. Think he’ll regain closers role?
  5. Thank you!

Hi Grey, long one, thanks for the advice all year!

H2H league with W / SV / ERA / WHIP / K/BB, so volume starting pitching has almost no value. SP/SP/SP/P/P/RP/RP spots, daily roster moves, so closers with SP eligibility have bonus value. 25IP minimum, so I probably need 3 starts to comfortably hit the min and lean on my strong bullpen for the three ratio categories and punt wins. Especially since one of them will hopefully be Skenes, and who knows what his IP will look like the last couple of weeks.

I’ve waited all season with deGrom on the IL and he seems to be rehabbing strong. Who do you drop from this staff?

SP/RP: MMiller, RWalker, Kopech
RP/P: Clase, Suarez, DWilliams, CGreen
SP: Gilbert, Skenes, Cole, Fried
IL: deGrom

So 7 closers, Gilbert and Skenes, and then pick a matchup. I’ve been taking the better one of Cole/Fried’s matchup in weeks that Gilbert and Skenes have just one start each.

It seems my drop choices are Fried, Cole, deGrom, Kopech (but letting him go might give the other good team an in to catch up to my bullpen because of SP eligibility), Williams or Green. Who gets the cut? I can leave deGrom on IL a little bit to watch with playoffs week after next, but my roster would be locked as long as he’s healthy and stashed.

Lindor is filled with such joy and determination. Day after day after day Lindor plays hard and smiles and encourages his teammates. He might even be the NL MVP, but he’s certainly the Mets’ MVP. IMHO, the key to the rest of the Mets season is Winker and Marte. If they can hit then maybe the Mets cause some trouble in the post-season. Also, Carlos Mendoza has been superb in his first season as a manager. A leader of men and a thoughtful strategist/tactician. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but a manager like Mendoza and a player like Lindor is a pretty good way to attract free agents who want to play on a team that’s really a “team” and not just a collection of guys accumulating stats for their own personal pay day.

Hey Grey,

10-tm H2H cat keeper (keep 10) CATS – (9) R,H,HR,RBI,SB,BB,AVG,OPS,XBH – (8) W,CG,SV,K,GIDP,ERA,WHIP,QS. LIMIT of 3 moves per week (no streaming). We also get (4) IL spots

1.   Last time you commented on still rostering Arenado, I’ve since moved him as my bench but with a player drop, moved him back to 3rd (his numbers have been better past 14 days – not great but better). Who would you be replacing from Fitzgerald, Adolis, Arenado, Chapman ? is that the order (worst to somewhat bad)? I’ve got 2 moves left this week, who are the two pickups to help my batting ?

2.   I’ve got A. Suarez on my roster for the start today (vs. CHS) but then will drop him to add L. Gil back to my roster. A. Munoz hasn’t been great and is potentially injured. Please rank these for 2025 keepers (12 team; 33 player rosters) – cannot keep not keep them all. Vientos; Riley; Naylor; Casas; Crews; Turang.

IMO – I have concerns about (Casas – are his ribs truly recovered?) and Riley (he wasn’t great even before his injury). Also will Turang be full-time or platooned?

So in particular, please provide 2025 order for Turang, Riley, Casas. Thanks.

They could be but together they probably kill my playoff run. I wanted an hot OF to raise my hopes. Do you think it’s better to wait and not cut either of them?
Or I could cut SonnyBoy to make space for a hot bat.

Do I dare trust Zac Gallen today? Semifinals and he may throw a gem or he may give up 5 runs in 4 innings.

I streamed Albert Sanchez and already have George Kirby and Bowden Francis starting today.
Kirby scares me too, hard to believe i am worried about him vs Oakland but i am. Finally grab Bowden last week, so that likely means he wakes up and realizes he’s Bowden Francis and gets blown up today.

7 Category league, W-L-ERA-WHIP-K-CG-S

Would you start Z Gallen?

I’ve got 202 innings left in the season with a lot of pitching on my roster….how are you feeling about sitting Christopher Sanchez today at Toronto? Home runs and inefficiency kill pitchers this league, and Sanchez’s last two have been stinkers….at least in this league. Is he running out of gas? My gut says sit, but the Streamanator has him at $9.70 and the ESPN projections have him as the 3rd best option. My gut has been wrong a lot as of late. What do you think?

My gut was (hopefully) right!

I’ll save innings for better streamers and my injured Yamamoto and Glasnow.

Can’t Buy Me Love is a classic.

Was so nice to see Carroll let loose on the base paths. He’s so friggin’ fast.

He’s gonna finish 100/20/70/30 (rounded down) in what was a seemingly down year due to a hot 2nd half.

IF, and that’s a big IF, his shoulder can hold up, he’s gonna be a monster next year. Hopefully he continues to build on the plate discipline as well.

If I may dept….I think it’s safe to say if the Boss was still alive today (although he would be 94 ) Clay Homes would’nt be a closer for the NYY….maybe Mason Miller or Tanner Scott…

I am so grateful for all your assistance !

1. At 1B, I have Casas and Michael Toglia. Would you try and upgrade?

2. At 3B, I have either Eugenio Suarez or Josh Jung. Would you play one on a regular basis?

If yes, who would you play on a daily basis?

Another option is to do matchups. For example, today Suarez is at SF with Birdsong pitching and a razz dollars of minus 0.9. Jung is home vs NYY with Stroman pitching and a razz value of plus 8.9

3. If you had to pick pitcher today, which would you prefer or would you pass on both? I have to watch my innings.

a. Houston’s Arrighetti at Cinn or
b. Phil’s Cristopher Sanchez at Toronto.

thank you!!

I so appreciate all your help!

Well crime is down by 20% in NYC with only 384 murders so far this year. Only 384, if you ask me that’s still 307 too many.
