Who is John Rave? And why does that sound like the tagline for an action movie? Keanu is John Rave. Keanu means Cool Breeze. Keanu is John Rave. Therefore, John Rave means Cool Breeze. No relation to The Freeze from Braves games. And where have you taken his daughter?! So, yesterday, John Rave went 2-for-4, 3 runs with his 3rd homer, and 3rd homer in three games. [licks fingers] Nomnomnomnom, yummy schmotatoes coming out of the break. But wait, there’s more! John Rave is a plus-plus-plus speed guy with some power.  John Keanu Rave seems like yet another guy who’s development was hampered by 2020 shutdown, and he has done nothing but hit in the minors. This year alone: 9/17/.301 in only 44 games. He’s capable of 30 steals in the half, and seems headed for ten homers. Maybe he could even move up to leadoff if the Royals sell pieces at the deadline. I’m getting goosed up! Excited even! Want to grab a glowstick, some herbal ecstasy, spin out in my head and watch Keanu as John Rave. Cool…breeze. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Rich Hill – Promoted by the Royals. That’s right, “Dick Mountain will be joining the Royals,” which is also what Prince Andrew says when he enters Buckingham Palace.

Salvador Perez – 2-for-5, 4 RBIs and his 16th and 17th homer, and four homers in three games. Sal P. is the Putting Cheese On It King!

Jac Caglianone – 1-for-4, 2 runs and his 5th homer. Get the home run, leave the Caglianone.

Noah Cameron – 6 IP, 4 ER, 7 hits, zero walks, 7 Ks, ERA at 2.61. This was an awful matchup vs. the 1927 Cubs, and he still performed admirably. His next one isn’t loved by the Streamonator, but I could see it.

Matt Shaw – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 4th homer, and 2nd homer in three games. Hot schmotato alert!

Carson Kelly – 3-for-4 and his 13th homer. Cubs are so incredibly fortunate this year that Carson Kelly is hitting .270 with 13 homers. He’s a 10-homer, .220 hitter! Ridiculous.

Denzel Clarke – Hit the IL with a Grade 2 adductor strain. A’s pitchers homers allowed will go up 3%.

Jacob Lopez – 5 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 4.60. The final crushing blow in the 5th inning was a homer he allowed to Helman. That’s mayo-slaughter.

Nick Kurtz – 2-for-3, 2 runs and his 19th homer. Kurtz so good! C’mon, baby, make it Kurtz so good!

Josh Jung – 2-for-2, 3 runs and his 9th homer, as he was recalled. He spent almost three weeks in Triple-A and hit .205 down there, so, yeah, he’s fixed. Good stuff. The home run yesterday is encouraging, but I didn’t run out to add him. (I added Shaw, instead.)

Michael Helman – 1-for-3, 4 RBIs and his 1st homer, as he hit leadoff. The mayo-slaughterer. I streamed Lopez (not because of Streamonator but because I’m a moron) and said like The Dude, “What the Helman!?”

Jack Leiter – 6 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners (4 BBs), 7 Ks, ERA at 4.27. I’m officially out on Leiter (and Kumar) until the Rangers can prove to me they can develop one single pitcher (or kind of any hitter).

Chris Martin – Hit the IL with a calf strain. What an up and down week for Coldplay.

Jarren Duran – 1-for-4 and his 9th homer, a leadoff shot. Not even sure how the ball got out. Looked like he barely hit it. Thinking we’re going to have the most inflated home run surge we’ve ever seen in the 2nd half of the year. Yes, I’m predicting that based off one homer.

Zack Wheeler – 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 hits, zero walks, 10 Ks, ERA at 2.39. And one of those earned runs was on a “I swear to God, Duran’s homer looked like a 2019 juiced ball jobber.”

Walker Buehler – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 5.72. Is it me (it is me) or does every pitcher have an ERA under-3 or above-5? Can anyone just be normal? Any hoo! Buehler Buehler Buehler looks busted busted busted. Not good, not good, not good.

Tanner Bibee – 7 IP, 3 ER, 6 hits, zero walks, 4 Ks, ERA at 4.27. It’s crazy how this is viewed as a Quality Start. Nay, as Fonzie’s horse said, this was an excellent start for Bibee, because, when he was one inning in, down three runs, it seemed like he was droppable in shallower leagues. Went from droppable to “Meh, I guess that was solid.” The seesaw of fantasy life in one see and/or saw.

Jose Ramirez – 1-for-5, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and his 20th homer, hitting .294. Trying to think of the most reliable players of the last decade and I have two 3rd basemen in mind. Jo-Jo-Ram and rhymes with Fanny Rachado.

Bo Naylor – 2-for-5 and his 10th homer. Wanna guess why you haven’t heard much about Naylor this year? Can you guess his batting average? If you said .175, you’re too high.

Kyle Manzardo – 2-for-3 and his 16th homer, hitting .219. Sonavabench! I have one Draft Champions league where I need multiple outfielders, and I have too many corner men so Manzardo’s sonavabenched me roughly 15 out of 16 times this year. Cool story, bro, I know.

Ramon Laureano – 2-for-4, 4 RBIs and his 12th homer. He has more homers than Grounder Henderson. [throws computer out window, hits Gunnar in the oblique and knocks him out for another month] Finally, good news!

Eury Perez – 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.23. BDon and I go over Eury Perez on this week’s podcast. I mention him and Joe Boyle in a very favorable way already thinking about 2026.

Kyle Stowers – 1-for-4 and his 22nd homer. He has the best OPS in history in July for the Marlins. I know, I know, goofy-ass caveats. Like, “Who’s the most handsome fantasy baseball blogger at Razzball after Marmos Dad?” It’s the caveats that make it me! Fair enough, but behind him on that list is Everywhere Blair, JKJ, Jakkers–Sorry! I meant behind Stowers on the Marlins list was Hanley, Preston Wilson and Cliff Floyd. Not a slouch list. Neither list!

Kevin Gausman – 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 4.01. I no longer remember why I hated him in the 1st half. It’s like I’ve been mind-erased. [opens his player page, sees 2024] God damn it! Now I remember! In all fairness, he’s pitching a tad better this year with worse ERA results. Lowercase yay!

Giancarlo Stanton – 1-for-4 and his 5th homer. That’s in 25 games. Giancarlo could wake up (ask why I’m hiding in his nearby hamper) and hit 25 homers prorated.

Brandon Lowe – Returned from the IL on Friday to be removed on Saturday with plantar fasciitis and not play since. Just go back to the IL, man, there’s no harm in that, just stop peeing on my leg and calling it asparagus water.

Shane Baz – 4 IP, 8 ER, ERA at 4.66. I’ve been Bazung! Put him on Opener duty for Joe Boyle!

Yandy Diaz – 1-for-4 and his 16th homer. That’s sixteen times he remembered to Launch Angle.

Miguel Vargas – 1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 12th homer, 2nd homer in two games. Yesterday, I said, “Looked pretty hard at him for a schmotato, and I didn’t really see it, but it’s hard to find hot bats with only three games played this week, so, yeah, I don’t know.” And that’s me quoting me! Today, I’m saying, yes, schmotato.

Kodai Senga – 3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 1.79. I just chuckled looking at his ERA. He has to regress for, like, two months to get close to the ERA he should have. And maybe he will!

Brett Baty – 1-for-3, 2 runs,. 2 RBIs and his 11th homer, and 2nd homer in three games. Sigh, fine, hot schmotato alert!

Logan O’Hoppe – 2-for-4 and a slam (18) and legs (2). That makes Logan’s owners O’Happy.

Hayden Birdsong – 0 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 4.80. He’s a lost cause. He should start over as Hayden X.

Willy Adames – 4-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 15th homer, 3rd homer in three games, and a triple short of the cycle. If Adames was dropped, then swing back your cape and catch her! Ya know, like A-dames, like multiple Judi Denches, like English ladies fainting. No? Okay.

Jack Flaherty – 3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 4.77, and out at 78 pitches, because he was working with Vegas. Check the flight logs! I mean, betting slips! Check something!

Paul Skenes – 6 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 1.91. Pirates announced they’re going to be shortening outings for Skenes. Maybe the end of that quote got cut off and they said they’re going to be shortening outings of Skenes’s opponents. Hmm.

Jake Irvin – 3 2/3 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 4.81. But he’s supposed to be good at home! The absolute worst feeling in the world is when a pitcher, who has a two-start week, sucks in the supposedly better 1st start. Dead Man Walking-esque feeling.

Josh Bell – 2-for-5, 2 runs and his 12th homer. “Bell is a trade target for contenders.” I copied and pasted that from 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Brady Singer – 2 1/3 IP, 7 ER, ERA at 4.84. So, what you’re saying is this week’s H2H matchup is already FUBAR’d. I see, I see. Thanks for the clarification!

Brandon Woodruff – 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 hits, zero walks, 5 Ks, ERA at 1.65. More people should have potential-career-ending shoulder surgery, huh?

George Kirby – 6 IP, 4 ER, 6 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 4.65. He went against the Andrew Vaughn-led Brewers, so what can do?

Byron Buxton – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 23rd homer. I kinda feel sorry for the people who will draft him in the top 100 next year. Kinda. Not fully.

Shohei Ohtani – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 35th homer, but he also threw 3 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 1.50, but he DHs so, bleh, whatever. Play the field some time!

Will Smith – 2-for-4, and his 13th and 14th homer, hitting .326. Just don’t mention his wife’s alopecia.

Andy Pages – 1-for-3 and his 18th homer, hitting .282. He’s hitting 7th and Mookie (1-for-3, 1 run, hitting .241) is at leadoff and Conforto (1-for-3, hitting .185) is in front of Pages in the six-hole, because Dave Roberts hit his head.

Michael McGreevy – 7 IP, 2 ER, 7 hits, zero walks, 1 K, ERA at 3.81. If this start was anywhere but vs. the Rockies, and he had more than one strikeout, I would be a bit more excited. McGreevy’s command is excellent. Like, excellent excellent — it’s currently at 0.95 BB/9, but his 5.4 K/9 is so bleh. It’s a small sample of 28 1/3 IP, but this is what the projections think he will do, so it’s not like it’s not indicative. I guess Streamonator, but I’m not sure I’d even do that outside of NL-Only.

Brice Matthews – 2-for-4, 5 RBIs and his 1st and 2nd homer. BDon and I go over Brice at length in this week’s pod. Tune in, suckers! Also, when he was called up I gave you my Brice Matthews fantasy.

Zac Gallen – 6 IP, 6 ER, ERA at 5.58. Wonder if he could be fixed with a trade. I doubt it, but I’m not sure he can get better where he is now, either.

Eugenio Suarez – 1-for-4 and his 36th homer, 5th homer since the break. Eugenio wants out of Arizona more than that girl wanted out of the room in the movie, The Room.

Thanks for your help. Trying to take a fresh look at my squad and figure out who’s expendable/who’s trade bait! I’m going to ask the same question about hitters… Knowing what we know now, who are the 4 you cut from here for 2026? (Either because of cost or performance.)

Knowing what we know right now, who are the 10 SP you’d keep from this group of 14? In other words, which 4 do you cut (either because they’re overpriced or because they suck)?

  1. SP R. Pepiot $29
  2. SP N. Eovaldi $23
  3. SP N. Lodolo $19
  4. SP S. Strider $17
  5. SP N. Pivetta $12
  6. SP M. Keller $12
  7. SP B. Ober $12
  8. SP T. Bradley $12
  9. SP M. Wacha $7
  10. SP Z. Matthews $7
  11. SP H. Birdsong $7

  14. SP T. Megill $4

Dick Mountain debuted 20 years ago on a Cubs staff led by Greg Maddux, Kerry Wood, Carlos Zambrano, and I’m sure Mark Prior on IL. Anyone over 40 knows what I’m talking about, and can’t believe this dude still throwing big league pitches.

Haha. I owned Prior a few times. DeGrom is the modern day version – unbelievable when healthy, but…

Prior is sharing from his personal collection: “the IL and you” 1950s-style educational film with the Dodger pitching Staff.

6×6 with OBP and TB

Top 3 bench bats for the rest of the week: Caratini, D Baldwin, Rave, Correa, Jung, Walker, Soler, Vaughn, Raley, Matthews

I’m tempted to go Caratini #1 here since he plays everyday, HOU plays Thursday (fewer games), and he can fill in for O’Hoppe when he sits.

Thanks!

grey 2 for your expert consideration:

both my $ leagues

*** 12 tm head to head ***
– how would you prioritize these sagnofers?
a. M.Strahm
b. A.Vesia
c. B.Treinen
d. R.Detmers(assuming Jansen is dealt)

*** 16team roto keeper ***
– currently in 1st by 10pts but need to make a move or 2 to be safe. bunch of big name trades made by 2nd and 3rd place.

my trade proposal
-SEND:
Josh Lowe($8), Luis Garcia Jr ($3), Joe Boyle($1)

RECEIVE:
A.Bender($7), G.Springer ($21)

I realize this isn’t the best return but it’s likely doable knowing the other manager. I’ve been in this league for 13yrs and never sniffed 1st place. it’s big money and some of the managers are NFBC guys, so they know their shizz. this is huge for me. I’ve been in 1st since around the end of April and currently have a 10-13pt lead depending on the day of the week. offense is great pitching has been superb but need another source of saves beside A.Chapman. I know Bender isn’t much but he’s likely the best I’d be able to pry away from anyone without trading a $6 skubal or a $17PCA.

THANKS FOR READING IF YOUVE MADE IT THIS FAR…

My cherry picked stat of the day:

since I picked up Kurtz off waivers on May 20 (after his prior owner gave up), he leads the majors with a .792 slugging. Next closest, 100 points behind, is .692 by Moniak

He is totally carrying me with Yordan and Bregman pretty much gone most of that time

Hey Grey: We are not worthy! My leaguemate in a 12 team roto league wants to trade Elly, for reasons unknown. Would he be fair return for my Skenes? I have Judge, Acuna, and hopefully a rebounding Cruz, so adding Elly would a major plus. I am in first place by a slim margin. My remaining pitchers are Webb, Ryan, Luzardo, Eury, Gausman, Edward Cabrera, and Ryne Nelson. Thoughts?

Wood and Soto or Chourio and Elly.

BenARROZ
BenARROZ

In my 12 team H2H keep which counts OBP and AVG separately and where we can keep 7 players, another team has started to throw out the idea of his Elly for my PCA. He even mentioned the idea of swapping his 2nd rounder next year for my 1st rounder to sweeten deal, but he may be moving back to an even swap, so lets assume that’s the deal. Both players would be 10th round value next year, each losing a round each subsequent year.

My other keepers are Wood, Julio Rod, Carroll, Riley, Alonso. So i can afford to move the OF. I currently have Seager at SS now who cannot be kept, but Im solid there for this year.

I guess the question for the most part comes down to who is the better player moving forward next year. Thanks again

What is it about Luzardo under the hood that we can point to that is causing these blowups? When I’m looking the only numbers that stick out are BABIP and LOB% but those are typically luck driven, right? I guess his Fastball kind of sucks and maybe that could be it.

Can the blame be put on the Phillies defense? The fastball? A secret third thing?

Brandon Lowe does this to me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!!! Granted, some years I got stuck with him as my mid infidel for the five weeks he was healthy, but this one stings. Once Kristian Campbell was demoted to conductor of the Rochester Express, I grabbed B. Lowe as a stopgap. He cooked, we ate — and ate well. That is, until his back gave out before the ASB, and he somehow plantar-fascitisized his foot WHILE resting his back…This is definitely my worst case of BLowe balls to date!

Where do you estimate Nick Kurtz will land in the rankings next year (i.e., estimated draft round slash rankings among 1B)? After a cold first month after his call-up, he has been absolutely mashing. I own him in a keeper and am trying to figure out his valuation.
Last 39 games: 18 HR, 12 doubles, 43 RBI, .319/.404/.792 and overall he has passed the “200 AB sample size” where some say stats stabilize with a slash line of .288/.355/.620 in 221 ABs. 32% K rate prob the biggest red flag…

12 teamer, H2H league, in third place so looking at being solid for Sept playoffs. Weird league with ten hitting cats…singles doubles trips, HR, Ks, BB, R, RBI, SB, Ave.
1. what changes would you make?
2. Is there someone on this roster you would try to trade away -( I know the answer is for whom but in general someone who looks ripe for regression)
WW: Stanton, Durbin, Polanco, Tovar, Cowser, Rave,

A Ramirez
Vlad, JoRam, Machado
Lindor, Story, Donovan
Tucker, Bux, Belli, R Laureano, Teoscar (ugh, still hurt me thinks)
Util Ivan
IL B Lowe (hadn’t played him since he returned so he is parked there)
SP Crochet, Wheeler, Yamamoto, Kirby, Ranger, Misi, Manaea
RP Munoz, Bautista, Vest, Vesia (holds is a cat so I roster one when the matchup is good. I drop them if my opponent has loaded up on holds)

So helpful, thanks! I always look at Ivan as a DH/Utility guy who hits .300. I don’t view him as a catcher since he plays everyday. But perhaps my approach is wrong. I will rethink. I am trying to offload Story and Lowe but will add Bux to the list. He seems due for an IL stint doesn’t he? Love the insights.
Side note: enjoying my first RCL effort. The rules and strategies seem so much more straightforward than this other league. Of course I am doing better there so that may be it!

So different than a 7 moves per week, H2H. You drop someone in that league, you may never see him back on the WW. But in Roto with 500 moves, I am rotating my non-studs like crazy to maximize ABs. Still learning the nuances (one guy has -200 innings on his pitching projections while mine is -37 so I like watching him keep his powder dry for the stretch run.)
To that point, I have a decent staff but carrying Flaherty. Time to cut bait or should I just not start him for a bit? My replacement would be to stream guys like Walter, Lauer, or Priester – although Priester maybe is worthy of a spot more than Flaherty perhaps?

Hey Grey, been watching a lot of Sox games recently, Luis Robert Jr. looks like a different guy coming out of the break, he has been much more patient and when he makes contact it is very loud and is still running every chance he gets. H2H Categories, Robert or Happ?

5×5 11 team OBP.

Rave, M. Vargas, Matt Shaw, Angel Martinez over Dansby? Dansby OBP last 30 is 327 so he’s not helping there either.

Milwaukee now has won 11 in a row and one more George Webb will be giving out free burgers! George Webb is a hamburger joint that has been around Milwaukee since the 1960’s. And guess who is on the mound tonight? MIZ and the bot still has no respect at -20.2

Need your advice. Fangraphs points league….currently, I have the following 2B eligible players:

Xavier Edwards, Nico Hoerner, Jonathan Aranda, Brandon Lowe

I also have to play SS and MI, but I have Oneil Cruz eligible to help there.

My questions are:

A. Are you worried about Brandon Lowe and this foot? If it’s anywhere like Correa last year, he could be out for weeks.
B. Of the players that I have listed, are you comfortable enough with them? High BA and high OBP players have value, even if they don’t have power. Albeit not as much value as power guys.
C. Three rebuilding teams have made the following players available:
Albies, Semien, JH Lee, Luis Robert

Would you try to trade for any of them to help improve my team? Acquiring 2B means I can put Cruz in the OF. Acquiring OF means I can put Cruz in the infield. The only caveat is that Robert cannot be dropped until the end of next year and is $29.

In order of preference, I’d try for Albies, Semien, Lee and Robert.

Cost….im going to try and trade away prospects as I’m going for it this year. If not, then perhaps a package including g Willson Contreras, with one of those players and another in return, as I’m already set at 1B and C.

Small and shallow 6×6 roto redraft.

I have a lot of 1B/CI eligible players – Got Kurtz and Busch off waivers early also have Vlad, Alonso.

Would you trade Vlad or Alonso for Buxton? I like the 5 category numbers he’s putting up.

Word is that Rafaela is going to be manning 2B against lefties. If he gets enough appearances there to qualify next year (and there is plenty of time for that to happen), where is he in your 2B rankings?

Also this news makes me a sad panda, because I paid through the nose to acquire Campbell and he may not even be the best Red Sox 2B on my roster going into keeper decision season…

Would you consider dropping Bryan Reynolds for Luis Robert? Reynolds peripherals still look fine and a hot streak/month should come, but the actual numbers have been poor. Robert has 12 HRs and 30 steals in about 1/2 a season of plate appearances and might get traded to a much better lineup.

There’s no way that Shohei doesn’t eventually win a Gold Glove, right? And a Greg Maddux pitching gold glove will be a cop out for him. It’s much more likely that one offseason he decides he wants to play third on the days he doesn’t pitch. We’re so lucky to get to witness this madness.

As a back of bench flyer in a redraft league do you like Brenton Doyle or Rave better? Rave seems more exciting, Doyle more prudent?

Thanks.

To activate Austin Riley who should I drop among Adell, Torkelson, Story, Semien or Durbin? This is a 12T H2H 10×10 category league.

Also, should I drop another player above to pickup Joe Caglianone?

Royce Lewis seeing the ball well. Last 7 PA EV’s.

106.5, 108, 103.3, 113.7, 102, 103.1, 108.4

Double, ground out, single, single, HR, ground out, HR

Small sample. Could be nothing. Could be the start of something. He looks better than he has all season. He even stole a base today. A healthy Lewis can be very productive even if it doesnt last long.
