I am stubborn, but not so stubborn that I can’t admit a mistake. I wanted to watch Cole Ragans (6 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, 2 walks, 7 Ks, ERA at 1.46) and be honest with myself if I thought it was a mistake calling him overrated in the preseason. I didn’t want to watch yesterday’s game predisposed to hating him, and I don’t think I did. He looked completely fine. His change is nasty, but his location comes and goes. If his command is on, as it was through six, then he’s a solid number two for fantasy. He won’t get wins, and he’s not, say, Tyler Glasnow with the lights-out. He was on for 85 pitches yesterday and he still only recorded seven Ks. That’s totally fine! Is it an ace? I haven’t seen it yet. I still think he was overrated in the preseason, and if his command leaves him in a first inning of the next game, instead of the 7th, as it did yesterday, it’s not going to be good news. Am I being stubborn? Meh, maybe. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Maikel Garcia – 2-for-5 and a slam (3) and legs (1). He’s going to be in this Friday’s Buy, which is already available on Patreon.

Will Smith – 2/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 20.25, and his 1st blown save, moving his record to 0-2. At this point, I think the Royals closer could be either of the other two Will Smiths and they’d be better off.

Luis Rengifo – 1-for-3, 1 run as he hit leadoff, but left the game with lightheadedness. He felt woozy seeing his name in the lineup.

Patrick Sandoval – 5 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 6.14. Streamonator hates his next start, and, if my knowledge of Sandoval holds true from previous years, a solid start is a future indication of nothing.

Taylor Ward – 3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer. The Taylor Ward sleeper I wrote last year? Consider it for this year.

A.J. Puk – 4 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 9.00. Some good news today with A.J. Puk. A lot of you have wanted to pick up other players off waivers and have had a hard time finding room on your team. Well, A.J. Puk’s got your back!

Nick Pivetta – 5 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 0.82. Me and my boys from Boston at the Cask love Pivetta, but the A’ss have four guys in their lineup hitting under .120.

Kenley Jansen – 1 IP, 0 ER, ERA at 0.00 and his 2nd save. His velo is down to 89 MPH and he looks like hot garbage that’s in the glove compartment of a car parked on the sun.

Ross Stripling – 7 IP, 1 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.75. Went to see if the Streamonator liked Stripling and Streamonator said, “An A’ss pitcher? What are we doing here? Punting wins?” Streamonator with some ‘tude!

Aaron Judge – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 1st homer. “Think I need to cut it up into at least 500 pieces before the body starts fitting into the wood chipper–Hold up! Judge moved! He’s alive!”

Alex Verdugo – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. His homers now equals chains he’s allowed to wear.

Carlos Rodon – 5 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 9 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 2.79. He tired super fast towards end of his start and his command went wee-wah when it was wah-wee most of the start. I’m not buying, but if you did, then you didn’t pay attention to me anyway, so what are we doing here?

Merrill Kelly – 7 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 1.98. If you see Rodon’s and Kelly’s starts vs. each other and think Rodon looked better, you might have Yankee Brain.

Blaze Alexander – 1-for-2 and his 1st homer. Fun fact! Blaze is also the name of everyone’s weed dealer.

Ketel Marte – 2-for-5 and his 1st homer. DBacks with Ketel and Blaze? They playing baseball or starting a VIP section in a Vegas club.

Zack Wheeler – 6 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 10 Ks, ERA at 0.75. See, compare this start to the Ragans start. Wheeler? He’s an ace. Great team (even if he was denied a victory), solid Ks and a nice track record.

Kyle Schwarber – 1-for-3 and his 2nd homer. Very smart to have your biggest home run threat hitting leadoff. Good, smart stuff.

Frankie Montas – 5 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 8 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 0.77. Philly’s weather (usually cloudy with a chance for cheesesteaks) was so foul I don’t want to put too much weight on anything, but Montas looked excellent yesterday, and all year so far.

Seiya Suzuki – 3-for-5, 4 RBIs, and his 2nd homer, 2nd in as many games. Seiya ball!

Tyler Glasnow – 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 2.20. What did I say about Glasnow being an ace? Well, he is, whether he was last night or not.

Shohei Ohtani – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 1st homer. Someone had money on the over!

Miguel Rojas – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer. Damn, Miguel Rojas has twice as many homers as Ohtani.

Jorge Soler – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 2nd homer, and 2nd in as many games. Old news, but it’s so funny that Dodger Stadium is now a launching pad with the humidor.

Cristian Javier – 5 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, 5 walks, 3 Ks, ERA at 0.00. He had how many walks vs. how many Ks? C’mon. Him being better than last year is the least believable Cristian narrative, and that’s carrying some weight.

Yordan Alvarez – 4-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 1st and 2nd homer. Captain Woo Cubano just wants to have fun!

Jeremy Pena – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 2nd homer. No one was expecting this resurgence, huh? That’s not a coy question indicating I was. Seriously, no one was.

Jose Altuve – 1-for-4, 2 runs and his 3rd homer, and 2nd in as many games. One small step for man, one giant–Well, no, just the small step bit.

Kyle Higashioka – 1-for-4 and his 1st homer, this was after he threw out two Cards baserunners attempting steals, which is whatever, but get a load of this: Donovan was thrown out, then the next guy on base was Arenado, who is much slower, and they sent him too. What kind of stupid juice is Oli Marmol drinking?

Joe Musgrove – 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 6.28. Faced the Cards, and I don’t want to say they’re as bad as the worst teams in the league, but that lineup looks busted right now. Goldy might wanna go back to Driveline.

Mitch Keller – 5 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 10 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 6.55. Hardest guys to deal with are: They’re not awful like Puk so you can just drop them, but they’re also GETTING ON MY LAST NERVES. Sorry, had to bring out the caps. This was vs. the Gnats, and it should’ve been better, but, honestly, the line looks good compared to how bad he looked. Just 90 minutes of me pulling my hair out. And I have gorgeous hair! Hopefully the next start is better, otherwise we need to start making some tough decisions.

Jack Suwinski – 2-for-4, 2 runs, and his 1st homer. Batter, batter, Suwinski, batter!

Joey Gallo – 3-for-4 and his 1st homer. The homer was his first hit of the year, but he added two more hits so you couldn’t compare him to Anthony Rendon. Good call, Gallo!

George Kirby – 3 2/3 IP, 8 ER, ERA at 6.97. Went to look at FanGraphs for Kirby’s FIP in yesterday’s game and FanGraphs said, “Yeah, he was unlucky. So? Does that make you feel better or worse? Are you a big boy or a big baby?” All of that is kinda harsh, to be honest.

Logan Allen – 6 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 7 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 2.31. You get your biscuit and propers for not accidentally drafting the DBacks’ Logan Allen by mistake.

Brandon Lowe – Left yesterday’s game with injury. He joins the injured Josh Lowe and Nathaniel Lowe. Ah, so that’s what 3 Body Problem is about.

Josh Jung – Will be out until June/July now. Man, without bad luck, Jung would be luckless. Now give Ezequiel Duran some at-bats! It is very comical (to only me) that I drafted Ezequiel Duran and Luis Rengifo in a bunch of leagues, because they cover so many positions, and now they never play.

Nathan Eovaldi – 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 hits, 1 walk, 8 Ks, ERA at 1.38. Would be so boring. The boringiest of the boring. Drilling down into the boring and pulling out the most boringiest boring ever. But a fantasy team with Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha and Eovaldi would’ve been so cheap to acquire in drafts and solid. Eovaldi is a lot like his teammate Adolis Garcia. In drafts? People are, “Meh, they’re okay, I guess, but I think I’m going to go a different way.” Then, in season, “How do I acquire more of these types of players?”

Corey Seager – 2-for-5 and his 1st homer. Take a moment, and think back to you screaming in February about how Corey Seager should be dropped lower in the rankings because he might miss Opening Day. Do me a favor though, don’t think back to yourself in January screaming I had Seager ranked too low initially.

Aaron Civale – 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 1.50. This game of Eovaldi vs. Civale was a joy to watch. We need more pitchers who sound Italian, who I have no idea if they are.

Alex Kirilloff – 4-for-4, 2 runs and a homer short of a cycle, which is prolly for the best since Kirilloff and cycle would likely lead to a 60-day IL.

Trevor Megill – Hurt his head after contracting food poisoning, feeling faint and falling back and hitting his head. The 7th inning stretch Bratwurst is a menace.

Joel Payamps – 1/3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 10.80. Damn, if only Payamps went out to dinner last night with Megill.

Jackson Chourio – 1-for-4 and his 1st major league homer, as he hits leadoff. [elevates off the ground from my ecstasy for Chourio] Someone throw me a basketball, I could dunk right now!

Rhys Hoskins – 1-for-3 and his 2nd homer. Something I’m not sure I mentioned yet, but the weekend before the season when I was in Vegas, I put money on Hoskins to lead the majors in HRs. If you’re following, I bet Yelich to win NL MVP; Hoskins to lead majors in homers and Brewers to win the World Series. I’m basically Ippei if Bernie Brewer needed a translator.

Hi Grey,

I have Jackson Merrill and Thairo Estrada at SS Someone just put Trevor Story and Bruce Turang. on waivers.Would you try and get one? If yes, who would you pick? If Story gets picked up by another manager, would you pick up Turang and who would you waive or hold?

Thanks so very much!

amazing how quick people flip in a shallow 12’er (even dynasty though, so seems odd, esp when some of these guys keep like 7-10 BN bats), p.meadows dropped here. only negative for me is i got a ton of young not quite fulfilled upside guys mixed with boring falling off veteran types already. OPS added.

C: diaz (1B)
1B: rizzo
2B: gorman (3B)
SS: o.cruz
3B: muncy
LF: yordan
CF: rafaela (SS)
RF: acuna
util j.walker (LF/RF)
BN (this many since super deep rosters yet shallow for starting hitting, i have 11 SP, 5 RP even with these 3 BN bats): campusano, j.polanco (2B/3B), siri (CF, to cover e.ruiz’s absence)

IR: endy rod
stash slots (9): e.ruiz, holliday, delauter, basallo, montes, a.ortiz, k.robinson

i’m guessing p.meadows not good enough here for 1st waiver used right, due to siri or him being the drop anyway when ruiz is back being the door shut reason.

I need a few lineup improvements:
E Duran, Baty or Lipscomb?

Nimmo or Chas McCormick?

Merrill,Turang, or Jorge Polanco?

Pick top three:
Singer,Lugo,M Keller,Jared Jones,Varland,Mize,and Jordan Hicks?

Thank you!

baty, at the minimum from playing time him vs duran

nimmo (doesn’t matter what league type but if OBP even more so)

if not dynasty the way turang is running right now probably him, merrill easily if dynasty.

if all those are out there, SON and who’s next upcoming, which would be:
singer vs WSOX tomorrow (13.7, gotta be first one to nab)
lugo vs WSOX today (actually he’s the first add, 11)
keller and mize just went so not them here, varland a few days and vs LAD so nope there,

jones tomorrow vs BAL (-2.6)
hicks many days off so not him

lugo, singer, jones. if you want to really trust SON sub hicks for jones (10.1 vs -2.6). in a league this shallow i’d not touch keller till proven otherwise. i’d expect jones’ upside makes this a jones though as the 3rd.

NL only, OBP over AVG, net steals over steals, total bases added 6×6 h2h. 10 teamer. keep 3 at previous season’s ADP prices (fantasy pros averaged). suwinski dropped already.

C: ruiz
1B: hoskins
2B: arraez (1B)
SS: o.cruz (didn’t keep as his last year ADP was completely break even, then drafted him back at around same range)
3B: k.hayes (raters really liked him compared to ADP this year, i got a lot of him, never really had much before)
CI: EDLC (3B/SS, last round keeper)
MI: l.garcia (2B)
OF (4): harris, soler, blackman, e.rosario
util (1): ozuna
BN: j.young
IR: nootbaar
prospect stash (1): j.wood

nootbaar sounded almost back today, will be shortly likely, so rosario was dropped then anyway, here bid how much out of 100? vickrey so overbidding you don’t get screwed doing.

Pablo has the same issue as Luis Castillo. He can’t pitch in the cold. It really makes sense for the Twins to have an open roof stadium. It can be 40 there in may. It will certainly be 40 in Oct if they are a playoff team.

why is anybody valuing varland MORE than say just dunning alone in a QS league (unless dynasty maybe). varland very recently was in bullpen, those guys almost never get deep enough for QS’s. i would prefer varland vs just dunning if it was a 1 for 1 in a dynasty though. i’m guessing somebody sent you this, and clearly values varland more than dunning alone.

G money!

I am fielding a few trades right now in my 12 team 5×5 (QS) roto league and wanted to get your take. In terms of team needs, I need SV and could use a little more power.

Player 1:

  • Offering me his Jordan Walker and Romano (IL) for
  • my Maikel Garcia and Scherzer (IL)…

He has Clase, Holmes, and Sewald (IL) as well. Thinking about countering with one of either Clase or Holmes and Yelich instead of Walker.

>Player 2:

  • Offering me his Chris Morel for
  • my Christopher Sanchez and Bryan Woo (IL).

I have Steele, Woo, Senga, and Scherzer all on the IL.

Any help is appreciated!

Grey, I tried to figure this out from comments, but all I could do was reduce the number of pitchers to include in this list. Standard mixed roto pitching categories with deep rosters. There generally are always semi-serviceable SPs on the wire, but we limit the number of waivers so there really is no streaming – need to ideally save bullets for big upside for the whole year.

So having said that, can you rank a few that you think are worth pouncing on (if any)? My staff is solid with lots of guys you like, but I like the idea of grabbing someone early if they have really high upside.

Hi Grey,

At this point my SP with Burnes, Wheeler, Greyson, Stubal and Ragans have been solid. I also have Casey Mize and Grocket. My only relieve pitcher has been Harvay and he has been great

The only week point has been Puk. Therefore I could waive Puk

One option is to strengthen my SP. As Yogi says that you can’t have too many SPs. On the wire are the following SPs

Alex Marsh
Zach Lindel
Javier Assad
Sean Manaea
Tyler Anderson

Another option is to pickup the following RPs who are on the wire:

Ian Hamilton
Elvis Peguera
Shelby Miller

Another option is just to hold.

Thanks!!!!!

Is Oli Marmol the worst manager in the league?

Has Jordan Walker coming up in the top of the 9th with runners on 1st and 2nd, down one run. He pinch hits for him. That sounds like a great way to really show the confidence you have in your young power hitter. He couldn’t pinch hit for VSII?

I didn’t know he also sent Arenado on a suicide mission to second base.

Please, for the love of God, fire him.

Cards in recent years rode the wave of Yadier, Wainright, and younger Goldy and Aranado and others. Now things have changed and I don’t think the “Cardinal way” really means anything. Any team that trades away Aroldi, Rice-aroni and Lame Thomas for basically nothing needs to go. Extending Oli I’d the nail in the coffin.

What on earth are the Royals going to do with their pen? My gut says McArthur is ma little sulky about not getting the job and has pitched in bad luck. Picked up Liev Schriver in RCL in case he’s next man up. Stratton might be next but he’s been lousy. Matt Cuatro seems like a stay the course old school knucklehead manager so who knows? What a mess.

Do what I did & propose your league switch to “SV+HLD” – does wonders for the stress of tryna figure out what craptastic closer to speculate on because you can roster 4-5 set-up dudes, have better ERA/WHIP, and get the same results.

Ahhhhh, delightful.

Quatraro was bench coach for Cash for a few years. I’d lean more toward analytics and match ups since there isn’t a true closer there anyway rather than”old school knucklehead” who stays the course. Doubt he’ll stay with Smith unless management tells him he has to so there is some deadline trade value but that would seem absurd since the Royals are lined up to at least compete in a weak division.
Bottom line is I don’t think any of them are going to be worth it- should have brought Chapman back at least.

That offense is going to put up runs this year. You have the many top former prospects entering their 3rd year. There will be leads to save. If Smith can’t hack it it’s Schreiber who they traded for and I have always wanted to see how he does closing. If not then McMillon and the 100mph heat.

Good morning Grey!

I’ve got one add left for the week. 10tm redraft OBP league. I was set to use it on Mountcastle but Taylor Ward has been coming on with a very high hard hit rate and the results are matching his excellent peripherals and is historically strong with OBP. As your 2023 sleeper post reflects, people have forgotten or discounted his success because of the freak injuries that have robbed him of games the last two years. My 3rd OF slot so far has been a decision between starting Chas McCormick or Will Benson and I could add Ward to that mix.

Someone also recently dropped Matt Chapman, so now there is another CI option besides Mountcastle. Bohm is currently my CI.

For the last move of this week, would you prioritize adding Ward, or one of the two CIs, and if the latter, which one between Chapman and Mountcastle?

Come Sunday when I get some more moves, would you drop India for whoever was the second option above? My MI situation is locked in right now and India is only depth.

Thanks so much, as always!

Also, what are your thoughts on the following:

  • Kikuchi – is he worth holding still or cut bait in a 12-team league?
  • McLain – still holding… was hoping to hear any sort of timetable for his return, but is it even worth keeping a roster spot for him?

Thanks again!!

So wonderful!!

a. Trevor can join his brother Tylor now on the IL. Hopefully they won’t visit each other while on the IL.

b. In olden days, the best pitcher got the W. But everywhere (past, present, future and SF future) the guy who gives up the homer to Higashioka is the loser. Case in point, Zach ‘Please hurry back Sonny Gray’ Thompson who is now 0-2 with a 6.97 ERA. It’s early but dang!

c. Chris Rock quote of the day for April 4, 2024

I just remember that whenever I got really mad or passionate, like in an argument, people would laugh, and I’d be dead serious. It would happen a lot. So it was like “Gee, I’ve got something here.”.

It up to the official scorer who get the win. Last season I had a pitcher who was pulled in the six with an 8-4 lead. With a runner on first. The next pitcher gave up 2 earned runs and loaded the bases. The next reliever retired the side and was credited with the win. Even though he should gotten a save. Don’t see it often

While the ruling is up to the scorer (like ruling a hit vs error) the inconsistency is what’s BS. It is rarely done. How many times have we all had guys in line for a win only to have a reliever blow the save then be given credit for the win when his team goes ahead when he’s still “the pitcher of record”

was going to bring this up when I saw they changed it. Wonder what Neris did to the official scorer. He came in to a 3-8 game with one out and the bases loaded. Gives up a 2 run double. 2nd and 3rd with one out. Gets a K. Gives up a little check swing dribbler that should be the inning but 2nd base misplays it and tosses it over first for 2 more unearned runs. Scorer gives him a single and a throwing error… which is my first issue with this scorer. Neris gives up a fly ball that really should have been caught but turns into a double, run scores. Neris Ks the next guy and it’s 8-8. So he came into a game with the tying runner in the on deck circle and keeps it tied even though his defense betrays him. Just give him the win! Alzolay gets the save, Neris gets the win, everybody is happy.

the only thing surprising about any of this is the lack of functioning memories in people in here literally every day for literal years, as if this is first time MLB’s goof ass rules looked weird. this happens all the damn time. we’re not right now living in some special little bucket of the universe, this stuff goes on regularly in MLB. it’s a complete joke, and always has been.

Odd… I see mostly people complaining/venting about the complete lack of consistency in the rule interpretation. Same thing with errors vs hits. If a pitcher finishes an inning with a game tied and that team goes on to win the scorer typically gives a win and a save.

yeah i’m saying that stuff was never consistent, they have it in the rules such that it doesn’t have to be. is this good or smart, of course not, but it’s been like this literally forever.

if say we were NEW to baseball, oh yeah then it’d be surprising. a lot of “wait, what, how is that the case”.

I have no idea how the season will go, but I think you might be blinded here due to your pre-season rankings/draft.

I don’t think Ragans is Tyler Glaslow, but Glass, in 3 starts has “only” 15 K’s and 7 bb;s in 17 innings.

Ragans in 2 starts 16k’s and 6 bb’s in 12 innings.

Ragans faced the Twins and Orioles arguably two top tier teams in the process.

I would much rather go for the safety in Glasslow and has a better team, but Ragans is as dominant as anyone early on and most of last year(I think he DID struggle towards the end though of 2023, but to lazy to do any real research).
