The Heriberto Hernandez buys started on July 10th, when I said, “If you prorate–[Mr. Prorater skydives through my ceiling, legs crashing through, but getting stuck] Damn it, Mr. Prorater! “Sorry, I misjudged the angle. Prorated it at 45 degrees. Anyway! Heriberto is a 30/15 hitter in a full season of at-bats. Wow! Now, can you call the fire department? I’m gonna need a crane.” And that’s me quoting me and Mr. Prorater! “Um, I’m still stuck in your roof.” I know, I can see your dangling legs. “So, a little help?” Then I have to patch my roof. So, since July 10th, Heriberto’s continued to light it up. My question now is more of a profound one: Why? Not why didn’t you pick him up on July 10th when I told you, and he proceeded to have one of the top months in baseball. Nah, you save that “why” for yourself when you’re being introspective. My “why” is why is he so good? That’s easy. Spinach and Santeria. No? Okay, here:

Dude hits the ball as hard as anyone. The chase, Whiff and strikeout rates are concerning, which is why he’s more of a .250 hitter than a .300 hitter with 30/15 ability. “Speaking  of 30/15, did you call the fire department? Anything?” Leave me alone, Mr. Prorater. Anyway, here’s some more players to Buy or Sell this week in fantasy baseball:

PSYCHE! This post was released a week early for Patreon members. It will be released all year early for Patreons, so if people are getting a jump on you, it’s because they paid the $10. Anyway, the Fantasy Baseball Buy/Sell:

BUY

Jonah Heim – Did you know Shea Langeliers’s father was a huge Mets fan and named his kid after Shea Stadium? No kidding, he cursed him from birth.

Eduardo Valencia – Someone mentioned in the comments something recently, what if the Tigers trade Torkelson? Then the DH spot opens and Valencia has power. Frank Viola!

Christian Encarnacion-Strand – Gave you my Christian Encarnacion-Strand fantasy last week. It was written while thinking, “Is Amber the color of my energy?”

Ty France – Thinking about a team where I drafted Ty France and Ryan O’Hearn instead of Vlad and Eugenio and I’m smiling instead of crying.

Ildemaro Vargas – “Of the Sea” Vargas is back from his 60-day IL stint! [intern whispers] Oh, hearing Vargas wasn’t hurt, he just sucked the last two months after an April of, “Grey, handsome stuff on your shoulders, so Vargas is a breakout, right? He’s so good!” Not to keep bagging on him, but Vargas’s April is so hilarious in retrospect — 6 HRs, .378! He hit .100 in June with zero homers. Anyway, he’s been better in July.

Alec Bohm – Fun fact! Each time Bohm is mentioned in the Buy column, his mom steals a piece of his jewelry and pawns it.

Jake Cronenworth – His July has been hot. So has mine too. His hot July doesn’t just mean he’s sleeping with ice pops on his forehead. Mine does.

Luis Rengifo – Don’t hate the player, hate the game! The game being, “Me avoiding the tomatoes you’re throwing at my head for recommending Rengifo.”

Pedro Ramirez – This feels like a Buy where I’m going to get to Monday and be like, “Due to the trade of Eugenio Suarez to the Cubs, Ramirez is out of a job,” or something along those lines.

Nick Loftin – He be Loftin. [sees his ground ball rate] Well, ya know, sometimes.

Marcus Semien – “When the schmotato’s hot, the fire burns bright.” That’s Wordsworth about Ty Wigginton. RIP Wordsworth, you would’ve loved Semien.

Chase Meidroth – This year I started liking the White Sox again, but — sorry, yeah, I’m about to undercut that — I don’t love Meidroth for fantasy. He has been hot, though!

Cooper Pratt – I nearly wrote his name as Pooper Crap, and I fear now I am going to have to start calling him that. As J. Lo says exiting the bathroom, this Pooper’s hot.

Brady House – With Curtis Mead being shipped off, House was in the, uh, house. I don’t think he’s suddenly fixed. Most of these pickups are, “This player is hot,” but this one is not. This is if you’re in a deep league looking for a total flyer, lottery ticket, that I have serious doubts about.

Vaughn Grissom – This week he played in his 162nd game of his career. His stats were: 65/12/77/.259/7 in 548 ABs. I can’t imagine a line being more indicative of a guy across four seasons.

Hao-Yu Lee – I thought my name growing up was Hao-Yu. Every time I was in my room, someone would scream, “Hao-Yu, come down here!” I feel like I’m doing old Bill Cosby bits.

Jacob Young – If you have Young in a deep, daily league, he’s actually been solid all year. Not incredible, obviously, but if you can play him when he’s playing, it’s been decent. By the way, the Nats are more committed to nonsense platoons than most teams. They will platoon in guys, who are not good, for guys who are good for no reason other than handedness.

Petey Halpin – Very surprised to hear the Guards’ offense has been struggling. They have Petey Halpin. Let Petey soar!

Cedric Mullins – Mentioned this on the podcast this week, but it seems like Mullins has been hot every week this year, while also not being good on the year. An odd confluence!

Ryan Waldschmidt – Bit concerned about his K% from the minors to the majors. It’s fine to go up a little. His jumped a lot. Even this month when he’s been hot. It could just be Growing Pains, Boner. His speed is solid and might chip in some power.

Max Clark – Just went over him this morning. Give it a scroll on the ol’ mouse and find it.

Tyrone Taylor – Also Taylor Trammel’s been hot. David Letterman voice, “Tyrone…Taylor…Trammell…Taylor…Tyrone…Uma…Oprah…” I’ve done that joke twice this week, and will now retire it until 2028.

Joc Pederson – Went to look at the Player Rater to make a point something like, “Joc’s just been good all year,” and that’s not true. He’s been fine. Around 200th overall.

Reynaldo Lopez – This is a Streamonator call like the call it makes to the post office.

Connor Prielipp – This is also a Streamonator call. “Some teenager put a stamp on my back and I can’t reach it, and the mailman keeps trying to pick me up as mail. Can you tell him to stop please?”

Brandyn Garcia – DBacks made the move to remove Sewald from the closer role and it could be Brandyn, but going against him is he’s a lefty and his parents didn’t know how to spell Brandon. Juan Morillo could also get looks. Either guy could run with it, so I could see grabbing both in some leagues. Could be a late Louie Varland-type situation.

Brooks Raley – Also mentioned this on this week’s podcast, but right now is the best time to stash a handcuff, because if the guys in front of them are traded, you want the guy who’s going to take over. So, I’ll just list some possibilities: Raley, George Soriano, Mason Montgomery, Adrian Morejon, and Rico Garcia. Anyone could be moving though. So, cancel your weekend plans. You have to stay close to your waiver wire this weekend. Sorry, Jimmy and Suzy, have your gender reveal some other weekend. It’s one of two things anyway. Just email us.

SELL

Anyone You Don’t Need – Next week the Sells become Drops, but, for this week — and this one week only *waves finger in the air* This one…Week! ONLY! *you’re so amped now, you could run through a wall* Okay, don’t run through a wall, I just painted. So, it’s the final hours before the fantasy trade deadline. Fantasy baseballers (<–my mom’s term!) are in their man caves decorated in autographed jerseys and Miller Lite neon signs. Under a spotlight is a lucite box filled with a signed baseball that you think is worth between $150,000 and $200,000, but is actually a factory-signed baseball that an Antiques Roadshow appraiser would tell you is worth “under $10 unless you can find someone as stupid as you.” You’re trying to work out a deal with a leaguemate? Well, try harder! Not saying to not not trade Paul Skenes for Ronald Acuña Jr., I’m saying that is is exactly exactly what what — okay, now I’m just repeating words — you should be doing whatever it takes, if it helps you win before your trade deadline. If it’s a keeper or you have no trade deadline, then you can use the Fantasy Baseball Trade Analyzer, as always.

assuming they don’t do something real stupid, like still play goldy over him vs righties like ever, i’d love to bet on he’s not hitting as low as 7th on current NYY (vs righties i mean). sh, nobody’s going to bet against this now, current supposedly guessed at NYY depth chart

well for deep leagues the first HH buy was prospect guy who had him ranked over consensus (i forgot where his highest top 100 ranking by prospect guy at the time here was, 68th? maybe, possibly right next to 100th but both were over consensus, esp since most of those rank for D and he was a C/OF it was known would stop catching even back then so really a corner only OF or DH/1B guy, and this was long enough ago it was probably what’s his face (not current prospect guy), whatever incognito name he’s going by now and whichever site he’s jumped to most lately, i won’t throw him under the bus by outting his real life name).

went over this same thing when emerson got called up, if one was in a 14’er dynasty, shallow yahoo (goofy 3 OF max, no CI or MI 1 util total) and further goofy, most prospects cannot be obtained in season unless they just got called up (not counting draft) so your FAAB and tiebreaker number are very important to the extent you’d like to obtain the best ones so you hold both all year (not even 0 bids you could easily lose your tiebreaker) and i’m since just before emerson came up the best tiebreaker left + only one with 100 left, so i get whichever prospect i want for the one i bid on as long as it’s this year, is m.clark good enough here (i’m fairly OF deep being the thing, if not that relative to other positions he likely would be) to shove all the chips in on? (or wait for made/LDV/k.anderson etc). some slightly different scoring here too, roto 5×5 with OBP over AVG, slugging over HR’s

C: goodman
1B: eldridge (entered system before draft this year)
2B: clemens (1B/OF), semien
SS: pratt (nobody cared when he came up, dropped shortly after), b.lee (2B/3B)
3B: riley
OF: moniak, burleson (1B), canzone (dropped lately by somebody), mccarthy, merrill
util:

IR: basallo, w.smith, o.cruz, stanton
NA (3: veen

SP (max 1500 innings, i’m right at projected max with this many, when some others get healthy i can BN more starts, lately almost no BN’ing to keep to this projected near max): henderson, king, burke, n-mart, kirby, gausman, eovaldi, wacha, rey lop (about to be dropped for streamer no IR space)

RP (max 3): e.diaz, ROB, beeter (saves only)

IR: soroka, dollander, steele

NA: t.mcdougal (one of the quite rare never up prospects in system), espino

wish this was tues 3 am eastern off waivers not monday, if SEA doesn’t truck somebody off by then the chances of k.anderson might spew downward to be up ever this year and we’d know that. i’m guessing made/LDV/walcott (him slightly less likely probably, lately got hit in head lately, on concussion IR) being a straight up gamble by now to wait on, as those SS elig’s way more of an upgrade for this roster (and k.anderson obv an upgrade for anybody’s SP).

having said that; at least once in this league it was like around now and i just kept waiting for some tippy top guy at a position i needed (it was the year mazouza was to be up, then never was up till the march after) that never happened, thus my tiebreaker/100 FAAB just flat F’d wasted.

didn’t NYY do that so much the PIT owner (or GM) did some half ass defense that tried to explain how PIT isn’t just a NYY farm system last year in the bednar trade (or 2 years ago, whichever it was), or was that just everybody else except the NYY themselves saying that so much that PIT GM/owner thought to try to talk everybody out of the reality they just watched after the fact, i don’t remember.

it’s probably like some read you got in poker off one opponent, that allowed you to do something that benefitted your equity in whatever spot, like you thin value bet this hand you wouldn’t have otherwise, or bluffed somebody out but wouldn’t have otherwise. if you have this tell, you don’t out it, making fun of the opponent, so what, they stop doing it and you can’t prolong this equity edge possibly forevermore later? of course not (unless you got a real weak ego and like lording it over somebody publicly more than money). if a GM/owner went out public saying how stupid the other side of this trade they won was, the well might dry up (either the mark team would stop dealing with you entirely and/or just put work into getting smarter in a way you caused directly by your utterances/shaming of the mark team in public).

1. Which side do you like in standard formats? Joe Ryan and Justin Wilson or Eovaldi and Mcgongile? Mcgongile is a borderline keeper but other good options. Little worried about Joe with the fatigue news and poor recent starts…

2. I have a J Walk who I can keep for $6. A little worried about a second half drop. What sort of player would you be shopping him for? $18 PCA, $30 Soto, $17 CJ, $15 caminero, $13 elly are all out there…

Ten hitting cats league…,r, s, d, t, hr, sb, bb, ks, ave, rbi. Spencer Jones, Grisham, Alien, or B Monty? Or just play matchups for the weeks….limited to 7 moves each week tho.
Separately, Eovaldi is a problem. Some good, deep starts and then no bueno lately. Hold or move on for a guy like Warren, Cameron, Sasaki ( so basically streamers in a 12 teamer I guess)?

The frustrating thing about H Hernandez is that every expert was shy/against/aghast about adding him due to his 36% k rate at the time. S I passed. Two weeks later every expert is saying to get him and told you so. Such is fantasy as sometimes guys with flaws are super valuable (says the guy who has Soto and Bux).

Hernandez I was in on for years but he faded, lost C elig, and outside of the DSL time his “special” power never showed up. It looks like he might have finally tapped into it again.

I definitely think you should enjoy the ride. Unfortunately, I find stuff like this and just think it isn’t sustainable long term.

Hernández is also 26 years old but isn’t as established as either of the infielders mentioned. He’s posted a nice .253/.329/.457 line (115 wRC+) in 569 big league plate appearances but done so with a higher-than-average 26.4% strikeout rate and contact trends that suggest he might struggle to even keep his strikeout rate down at that level.

Hernández’s chase rate on pitches outside the zone is excellent, but his contact rate is bleak — both on those chases and on swings within the zone. The league-average contact rate when chasing is just over 59%. Within the zone, it’s all the way up to 86%. Hernández has a 44.6% contact rate when he chases and just a 76.6% rate when swinging at pitches in the zone.

Hey Grey – where do you do you think Corbin Carroll falls in 2027 if he just maintains his current pace and finishes 22-22 or so, .250?

In my 12 team roto keeper i was offered $15 Degrom, nonkeeper randy A, and $1 Early for him . . . that feels way too light, but made me wonder if I have rose colored glasses on for Corbin. Thanks!

I woke up from a 3 day coma and Yainer Diaz raised his BA from .233 to .261 by going 8 for 10, 4 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI in two games. I just found that mildly amusing.

“Would you like Yainer Diaz?” “No, he is hitting .233 ”

Two days later the GM calls another team. “I got this .261 C who I gotta move by the deadline….”

Check this, Grey. I’ll from time to time about how bad of a season in this one particular league I’m having. Today may have been the peak of how bad it has been. I dropped Brooks Lee and I picked up Willi Castro who’s played 12 straight games (waiver wire is wonky and my offense has been putrid). I literally said “my season is so methodically bad in this league I wouldn’t be surprised if Lee homers and Castro doesn’t play”. You can’t make this sh up. But what makes it worse is my 10 rosters spots went 4/33 with 0 runs 0 hr 3 RBI and 1 SB…. My ONE bench bat for the day was JJ Bleday, who homered. And to top it off the only pitcher I had throw an Inning was Orion who gave up 4 ER. Ugh lol.

Also, STL is said to be open to trading Herrera or Pagés. As a Herrera owner, it makes me a little nervous seeing them move him to the 3rd and 4th spot in the lineup over the past week (7 starts) as a possible showcase. Walker has been an RBI machine at #3.
