Is anyone struggling with pitching? I know there’s bad pitchers, but my word my pitching is good in just about every league. My hitting? Oh, that’s a mess in multiple leagues. Look at this insanity:

I am howling at how bad my hitting is. Gunnar, Yordan, Jazz, and Butler are my top bats. Strike through “top.” My actual top bats are Hunter Goodman and that’s it! I mention that league now because I dropped Will Warren in that league. In retrospect, it was a bad move, but I can only turn my pitching to 60. My thought was he didn’t pitch deep enough into games — right there — but I also thought he couldn’t command his pitches. That’s as wrong as banking on Yordan and Gunnar to win a league? Not entirely, but his command is good enough. Yesterday, Will Warren went 5 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 10 Ks, ERA at 4.05. His dazzlers were an 83 MPH sweeper that had a 42.9 WHIFF% and a 93 MPH 4-seamer with a 29.4 WHIFF%, but the proof’s in the pudding (a hilarious saying, unless Bill Cosby is saying it) is in the underlying numbers — 11.6 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 2.96 xFIP, 20.8 K-BB%, and appears likely to compete for the 2nd straight Yankee pitcher to win ROY. If he could’ve also played 3rd and hit for power, I would’ve kept him on my fantasy team. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Aaron Judge – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and a slam (16) and legs (4), hitting .402. How awkward is it gonna be when they defrost Ted Williams’s head to follow Judge around for his chase at .400? A Red Sox great’s head watching the Yanks every night? Oof, so awkward.

Ben Rice – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 10th homer, hitting .259. This is the first non-Judge Yankee homer that wasn’t a leadoff homer.

Max Scherzer – Threw a 33-pitch session yesterday. At 32 pitches, he pounded his glove and screamed, “Let’s go!” After his 33rd pitch, he waved his hands and said, “I’m good.”

Jonah Heim – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 6th homer, hitting .262. Even better, he made it possible for Luke Weaver to enter for the one-out save. I love that! Thank you, Heim! I even forgive you for Licorice Pizza.

Nick Martinez – 6 IP, 1 ER. 6 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.43 vs. Bailey Falter – 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 hits, zero walks, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.50. They called this matchup, “Any pitcher in the NL Central could be the NL’s Seth Lugo.”

David Bednar – 1 IP, 0 ER, ERA at 5.02, and his 4th save. Pirates are really committed to the bit to keep going to Shit-the-Bednar when Santana has a 1.86 ERA right behind him.

Parker Meadows – Will begin a rehab assignment. That’s also the answer to, “Did Parker Meadows retire?”

Riley Greene – 3-for-4, 4 RBIs and his 12th homer, hitting .286. He’s around a top 10 outfielder on the Player Rater. Riley Greene feels like the Royce Lewis we were promised in the outfield.

Kerry Carpenter – 1-for-4 and his 10th homer. Since I was there for Greene, Carpenter is a top 20-ish outfielder on the Player Rater.

Tarik Skubal – 5 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 2.87. In all my leagues where I’m doing well in pitching, I don’t have Skubal anywhere. Shrugs. Hunh. Weird.

Nolan Arenado – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 5th homer, hitting .247. Bought some hay that Kenny Loggins actually chewed in the music video for Footloose. Here, let me show you by this open window–NOOOO!!! Torenado!

Chris Bassitt – 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 2.83. One of the more shocking Guys That Are Doing Well. Think a lot of people would think he’s a sell high. He’s not. He’s actually a buy high, if you’re into that sorta thing.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 1-for-3 and his 6th homer. Let them eat Cake!

Anthony Santander – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 6th homer, hitting .185. Oh my God, is that actual fog on the mirror under his nose?

Logan Henderson – 5 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 1.69. I like Henderson a lot, so don’t take this the wrong way, but the Uh-O’s look as bad as the Rockies in away games. They moved Adley up in the order and Mountcastle down; Adley who absolutely sucks and Mountcastle who had a 12-game hitting streak, and is hitting around .400 in the last 25 games. Is Brandon Hyde’ing in the back of the dugout?

Brice Turang – 2-for-5 and his 4th homer, hitting .297. That gives a B. Rice two homers yesterday.

Sal Frelick – 1-for-2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and a slam (3) and legs (9), 2nd homer in the last week and hitting .205 in May before yesterday and I thought I was leading somewhere good, then [raspberries lips]

Rhys Hoskins – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 6th homer, hitting .297 (!), hitting near-.400 in the last two weeks and a schmotato if available.

Brandon Walter – 5 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 5 Ks, as he was called up. Damn shame that B. Walter’s not followed in the start by a Downs. Or a Jennings. Or a Behar! Walter was a lefty on the taxi squad. No, not with Randy Dobnak, that’s the Uber squad. Walter is incredibly meh (was released by the Red Sox, throws 91), but has good command, so maybe some AL-Only value.

Isaac Paredes – 1-for-4 and his 8th homer, 2nd homer in three games. Wonder if Paredes can march his ass over to Christian Walker to see if he has a pulse.

Zack Littell – 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 hits, zero walks, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.25. At the end of the podcast each week, BDon gives you some pitcher streamers, and he mentioned Littell, and I thought to myself, “In Big Stein, that’s bold,” but Bold is BDon’s name. Bold One, it’s a weird abbreviation.

Hayden Birdsong – 5 IP, 0 ER, 5 hits, zero walks, 4 Ks, ERA at 1.91. Rockin’ in the tree top all night long, rockin’ and boppin’ and singing that song, rockin’ Hayden, tweet-tweet. Don’t love his command, but that’s a small quibble for the sweet, sound of Birdsong’s Ks and lovely home nest park. If you asked me Roupp or Birdsong, I can’t answer, they’re all my children. Though, Roupp has a little more to like, but close. Birdsong is worth rostering, as well. Tweet-tweet.

Yoan Moncada – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 4th homer, as he hits 3rd, which feels like one of those pitfalls a manager can fall into. Not metaphorically. I mean literally. If a manager puts Moncada in the three-hole, he should fall into a pit and never be heard from again.

Logan O’Hoppe – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 11th homer. As Pharrell would sing, “Because I’m O’Hoppe.” I hope that song is now stuck in your head all day and you have to call the hospital asking if there’s a way to get a song out of your head.

J.T. Ginn – Hit the IL with a right quad strain, which prolly happened on an immunity challenge, because his name always makes me think he was on Survivor.

Gunnar Hoglund – 4 2/3 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 5.06. If you’re still trying to make Hoglund happen like he’s fetch, it doesn’t seem to be working.

Shea Langeliers – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 9th homer. I don’t know if this is true, but it feels like it: There’s more good catchers than 1st basemen.

Jacob Wilson – Left the game after being hit on the forearm. Please, no fractures. Can we get a prayer triangle together?

Nick Kurtz – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer. Well, why didn’t you say you’d do that before I dropped you last week?

Gabriel Moreno – 1-for-3 and his 3rd homer, and 2nd homer in two games. Hot schmotato alert!

Corbin Carroll – 1-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 15th homer. In same breath as Ohtani, Judge and Schwarber. And he has 50-steal speed. Incredible.

Shelby Miller – 2/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 2.18, as he blew the game, after working Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Wild guess, but maybe don’t pitch him every single game.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, 2 walks, 9 Ks, ERA at 1.86, and 110 pitches. If only he had 111 in the tank. Sigh. Tanner Scott blew this one for him, and Yamamoto’s run support for his 10 starts is a whooping 14.

Spencer Strider – 4 1/3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 5.79, as he was activated. Only really his second start of the year. Am I really biting my lip to not victory lap my preseason call to avoid him? Well, let’s just say if you heard me right now, I’d be calling him Spenther Thrider.

Matt Olson – 1-for-4 and his 10th homer, hitting .240. Way to go Olthon! Damn, still biting lip.

Dylan Crews – Hit his 7th homer, but left with a lower back issue and will be getting an MRI on it. I blame all y’all who ask about dropping him every single day, like he’s not capable of a top 20 outfielder season.

Robert Hassell III – Will be called up to replace the seemingly headed-to-the-IL Crews. No amount of prayer hexagons can fix this. The Third Hassell was a prized piece of the Soto trade, then everything went kablooey and he started hitting .189 in Single-A. Bobby Barrels does have speed, but his nickname seems sarcastic at this point, as he hit .241 last year  in the minors, and makes a ton of weak, ground ball contact. Maybe he can figure it out, and remind people why they were once excited for this trilogy.

Adrian Houser– 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 2 Ks, as he was called up. Literally rolled out of bed and held the M’s scoreless. This is more of an indictment of the M’s than an endorsement of Houser.

Jesus Luzardo – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 10 Ks, ERA at 1.95. Who turned the Coors humidor to 11?

Kyle Schwarber – 1-for-4, 2 runs and his 17th homer. Now on pace for around 60 homers, and we haven’t even reached his Mother Month when he nestles into the bosom of June and suckles at her teets.

Clay Holmes – 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.13. Managing to have a remarkably solid season, that I did not expect from him. He did the Reverse Mariano. A so-so reliever who becomes a solid starter. A different path, to be sure. Or PATH, in this case.

Rafael Devers – 1-for-3 and his 10th homer. Now hitting around .450 with 10 homers since the last victory I took on him.

Carlos Narvaez – 1-for-3 and his 5th homer. Has been one of the hottest catchers in baseball (who is rostered in under 50% of leagues, which I know because I’m busy working on the Buy column for the Patreon.)

Walker Buehler – 2 1/3 IP, 0 ER, ERA at 4.00, as he was activated from the IL. He was ejected for calling a strike a strike, because baseball umpiring be dumb. His underlying stats look pretty awful, and I don’t think I’d start him in anything shallower than a 12-teamer, but you’re welcome to check the Streamonator. Hopefully, him and us get ABS sooner, in the landmark case of sooner vs. later.

Travis Bazzana – Will be sidelined for 8-10 weeks with a strained oblique. Ever since Australians discovered the oblique in 2022, there’s been an epidemic, as they’re unable to heal mid-muscles.

Ryan Weathers – 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 hits, zsero walks, 4 Ks, ERA at 1.80. Think it speaks higher of him than I could just by the simple fact that he held the Cubs to one run, then they destroyed lesser pitchers who followed him. We like Weathers. We is me.

Ian Happ – 1-for-6 as he was activated from the IL.  Kevin from ESPN’s “Get Him In Your Lineup” Department said, “I told Pregnant Janet that I like the name Skaboosh, hope she listens.”

Kyle Tucker – 3-for-4, 2 runs and his 11th homer. Crazy how good the Cubs are this year, and it’s not just Tucker, but it is Tucker too, obviously. Seiya Suzuki (3-for-5, 3 runs, 4 RBIs) also hit his 12th Seiya!

Jameson Taillon – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 2Ks, ERA at 4.13. Taillon’s not my fave, but the Streamonator loves his next one like I haven’t seen the robot love anything since its first TBS airing of Short Circuit.

Moises Ballesteros – Sent back down with Ian Happ’s activation. [lights an imaginary lighter, burns imaginary FAAB money that I spent on Ballesteros, then Moises Alou urinates imaginary pee onto it to put it out]

I can’t stand pitching in fantasy baseball. Here’s megill doing well again at boston after everyone cut him. Pfaadt gets two wins and 2 qs against LAD in 2 out of his last 3 starts on my bench. I use him at sfg and he goes 4 innings amd destroys my ratios.

What’s good Grey? I’m currently the worst I’ve ever been over 23 years in my 12-team keeper league. Like 43 games under .500 or some shizz. I can look at the stats and my pitching is top 3, but my hitting is dead last by a long way. I got a lot of the players you were listing (i.e., Jazz, Yordan, Butler, Vlad, Chourio, etc.)

It’s depressing, but I don’t know what to do cause I feel like my dudes are good. Hi to Ted.

Between these, who do you like for the long haul in a standard 5×5 roto:

Schwell, Pivetta, Bubic (already past his career high IP), Pablo, Framber

Thanks for your help.

1. Anyone heard news on Bibee. Start pushed back a day initially and now another three days. Nervous time? He stinks but I got him for Nimmo after the big 9 RBI day so not invested.
2. RPs are the worst. I drafted two very late (Finnegan and L Jax). SAGNOF for life. Traded them both for Bautista to great applause here. Now Felix has pitched B2B games in non-save situations giving up runs in both. I guess not a question but an acknowledgement you just never know about relievers. Oh, Kyle has 15 saves just to rub it in lol.

Hi Grey,

I have some bad pitching at the bottom of my order.

Singer
Soriano (IL replacement for the man who got “fingered”, Reese Olson)
Ben Brown
Pfaadt

Roupp (faces WASH this week) and Springs (face the Phils this week) are available

I have Kirby coming off the DL so will definitely lose Brown when I activate. Do I drop Soriano or Singer or both for Roupp and/or Springs?

Thanks.

Good afternoon, Grey,

10 team redraft OBP and QS H2H league.

At 2B: Gleyber or B. Lowe? Gleyber cooled off over the past week and Lowe is showing some life. Trade robot like Lowe per game but thinks Gleyber has more overall value playing more.

In the OF: top 2 out of Ward, Friedl, Doyle, and Edman.

Pitching: Ranger Suarez or Will Warren? IP/start is also a category on top of the QS cat.

Thanks for all your help oh wise Fantasy Master Lothario!

I have been offered Joe Ryan for my Donovan. Ten hitting cats in our league so Donovan checks a lot of boxes. I like Ryan a lot but not sure how much I need him versus my need to hitting. My team:
Ivan
Vlad, Harper, Machado
Lindor, Donovan, Winn
Teoscar, Tucker, Santander, Ward, Scott
Util-Beck
Bench: Crone (who would slid in for Donovan if I traded Brendan). If not, I will drop Crone for a stream or RP (holds and saves league)
Wheeler, Crochet, Yamamoto, Bibee, Abbott, Ranger, L Henderson for now
Estevez, Iglesias, Bautista
IL – R Olson

1. Keep or trade away Donovan
2. Friedl owner trying to move him. Did I read correctly in the comments section that you prefer Friedl over Ward?

This is a 12 team, H2H league so kinda assuming I will be in or near the six playoff teams come September. Donovan could hit .270 the rest of the year and it would be successful. So tempted to take Ryan and try to trade off my second tier arms for guys like Friedl, Mullins, Westburg in hopes they get better as the year progresses.

13-team 6×6 with OPS and Holds

I traded Romano for Turang.

I wanted a set and forget 2B, and the prospects for Rafela seem questionable. (I also roster Brooks Lee but haven’t gotten much there yet.) My remaining closers are M. Miller, Hoffman, Megill, Bednar.

I feel although Turang is high on 2B rater, he’s kinda limited to runs and SBs. I expect regression in OPS (I had him last year). Maybe he helps in average, especially considering it against what I’ve been getting to date.

Thoughts?

I’ve been a nearly daily reader of you for 15 years. While your knowledge in both pitching and hitting are deep, I feel your instinct for pitching is better. I remember 5 years ago you said you had a feeling Zack Wheeler was going to be the best pitcher over the next 5 years. ‘Member that? I feel you are more objective on pitching whereas sometimes you get swept away by lover boy dreams when thinking about a hitter’s ceiling. Maybe its just tough luck and I’m totally wrong…cust kayin’

I feel you on the hitting woes, Grey! It’s been a miserable start with Yordan and Jazz on the IL, plus Chourio, Duran, Tovar, Volpe, and Robert are all either underperforming or absolutely stinking it up while healthy (looking at you, LuBob.) My best hitters per the player rater — Wilmer and Pages — were free off waivers! Soder might be only bat I drafted who’s worth a damn. And my overnight FAAB bid on Shaw (who I drafted and then dropped, ugh) came up way short. The best win of my season so far was recognizing the end of the line and trading away Marcus Semien for a hot ham sandwich (Pepiot).

Baseball is a long season, and I’ve managed to hang in just under .500 so far, but we’re going to need some sorching summer months to get back in it. Get healthy and hot, fellas! You’re making the boss look bad

Great input! You gave me a few ideas for potential trades involving Baz?

1.Would you offer Baz and Yelich for Logan Henderson?

2. Would you offer Baz and Yelich for Ryan Weathers?

3. Do you have possible trades involving Baz And Yelich for a pitcher?

Thank you!

Thanks. I wanted to review my logic in order to get your thoughts.

In LF, I have Ozuna as well as Kerry Carpenter as backup and Yelich. Yelich is only qualified to play only LF

In CF, I have Buxton (IL-7). With Buxton on IL, Carpenter is in CF

In RF, I have Kyle Stowers

Note: I have Manny Machado in DH since I have Austin R at 3B.

Therefore, I think that I could use Yelich to pick up a SP. Do you agree with approach?

If yes, what pitcher would you try and get for him?

Thanks so much!!

Hi Grey,

I am so glad that I listened to you and started Warren. Thank you!!!

1. would you start Warren at CO?

2. I just cut Nick Martinez and picked up Wacha whose next two starts are at Minn and then home vs Detroit. Would you have made that move?

3. the Razz dollars are positive for Wacha’s next two starts at Minn and vs Detroit. would you start him in both?

thanks again!

I finally get Greene and Mize back this weekend for my rotation, but struggling with who to drop for them. Mason Miller for Greene, I think, since I don’t need any non-elite RP in a 10-team points league. But then for Mize…..Sugano, pending his start today? Logan Henderson despite his hot start? Baez or Torres from my bench if they don’t pick it up these next few days? Buxton because who can trust his health?

Drop options are Bubba Chandler (burning a hole in a roster spot), Nick Martinez (kinda like his next start against the Royals on the road), and Pepiot (has the Jays up next).

I also have Pfaadt, who I don’t like but will try to use in a package deal after his next good start (since he’s more widely owned) and Reese Olson, but I’ll be able to move him to an IL slot shortly with Acuna and Buxton coming back.

I don’t think anyone who drafted Strider was counting on him for THIS year…maybe a late post season push….my main rationale was I had extra picks and am in a keeper league, so it was good value moving forward. I am def. with you on tempering expectations for this season, though. If he gets right, I will gladly keep him in the 5th round next year (6th this year). Sucks bc I didn’t want to start him, but Reese Olson got ILed at the last second. UGH

Today’s episode: neurotic comedian Richard Lewis calls in to a SiriusXM fantasy baseball call-in segment.

**\[SFX: Fantasy Sports Radio intro music fades out]**

**HOST:**
Alright, let’s go to the phones — we’ve got Richard from… uh, “a dark place.” What’s up, Richard?

**RICHARD LEWIS (frantic):**
Yeah, hi, thanks for taking my call, though I’m not sure why I’m doing this. I just watched a baseball game where a fight broke out — or maybe it was a fight where a baseball game broke out. Either way, Rodney Dangerfield’s ghost is laughing at me and I’m *not okay.*

**HOST (laughing):**
Alright, buddy, whatcha got for us?

**RICHARD:**
Who do I stream tonight?! Vásquez in Toronto? Heaney vs the Reds? Sugano? Every option is like choosing between a root canal, jury duty, and reading my ex’s wedding announcement. Heaney burned me so bad last week I had to apologize to my *therapist.*

And now someone dropped Brent Rooker! Do I grab him?! Drop Doyle or Butler?! I haven’t made a decision this hard since I picked a major in college — and I *still* don’t know what I picked!

Also — catcher help. Is it time to drop Yanier? Goodman’s out there hitting like he’s mad at me personally. But if I pick him up, I *know* Yanier’s gonna go full Johnny Bench the second I hit the button!

**HOST:**
Okay okay, deep breaths—

**RICHARD (spiraling):**
Deep breaths? I drafted Varsho. I haven’t *exhaled* since April. My entire life is a DFA. I’m ranking rest-of-season 1Bs like it’s a eulogy: “Vinnie P, you were good to me. Goldy, you hurt me. Hoskins… I never loved you, but I *believed* in you.”

I’ve got Friedl, Dylan Moore, Larnach, and Colt Keith all underperforming like it’s a union contract, and now I’m supposed to activate Happ and Mize?! I’m out of room — physically, emotionally, spiritually!

**HOST (laughing):**
Richard, hang in there, man.

**RICHARD:**
Hang in there?! I haven’t slept since the waiver wire opened! I’m one bad outing away from naming my ulcer “Logan Allen!”

Just one more thing. Whoever dropped Steer to grab Castellanos? I hope you sleep well tonight. Because I won’t. And that’s all I’ve got. I’m gonna go stare at my FAAB budget and weep. Thanks.

**\[SFX: Click. Line goes dead.]**

**HOST (grinning):**
Well. That was… passionate. We’ll be right back with more questions — and maybe a wellness checkup.

Nick MartinezX2
Hayden Birdsong
Chris Bassitt
Clay Holmes
Michael Lorenzen

2 owned Sonny Gray..

Grey, what do you do! How is this even fucking possible dude.

Not to mention I have a total of… wait for it… 7 home runs in 5 leagues where you start 10 guys. One of my opponents had 5. One is starting 2 catchers.. one of those being Shea fucking Langilers that all of a sudden 5 tool
Stud has more stolen bases than all my teams combined

In my ONE points league I have the 2nd most points, including this week where did be wait g 10 of 11 teams except, you guessed it, the team I’m going against today who owns 5 of those above mentioned pitchers for like 260 points today.

This is my safe haven to bitch, but seriously, what do you do? Nothing right?

I’m on like a 4 year shitshow with fantasy sports. I don’t have a single day where my opponent gets lit and has 1 hit. It’s like an automatic .300/10/5/10/5 day for everyone of my opponents. Also, the other thing, I don’t think any of my opponents have had ERAs over 3.25 this season to WHIPS over 1.05. I’ll give you my password so you can waste your life dissecting how one human has that bad of luck.

Every Grisham homer this season has been against my teams too.

Yamamoto has received poor run support, which is surprising. Even more shocking is that Glasnow faced a similar issue last year. I remember he had five consecutive starts where the Dodgers, failed to score a single run for him while he was pitching. LAD ranks third in runs scored per game this year and was second last year.

I am struggling with pitching. I am last in whip, era and K. I ashamed to say it. Second in wins though. That makes sense. I picked all of the wrong mid tier guys w/o a true ace and had some reliever blowups. I’ve made all of the wrong sit vs start calls. I got nothing from bryce miller (1st pitcher drafted) and stubbornly have used baz. It still amazes me how bad Baz is doing with his stuff even with a crappy slider that he shouldn’t throw. I need to cut one: nick martinez or pfaadt. Qs league. Thanks
