*nervous finger tap* How many days without baseball? So, I can close my fantasy baseball team browser window without missing anything? Okay. *throws computer out window* What? Was there another way to close my fantasy team page? I hadn’t in so long I forgot. What do you mean I can go outside without worrying about missing anything in baseball? But there’s real people out there! I’m staying right here, thank you very much! So, we’re headed to the break, and it couldn’t have come at a worst time for Jack Flaherty (7 IP, 1 ER, 3 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.64). Let him pitch again tomorrow, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or until his ERA is under 4! Also, can he pitch against the Giants for all of those? Even if Alex Dickerson is as strong a cleanup man as you can find (in any Division II school’s lineup). Flaherty’s peripherals (9.9 K/9, 3 BB/9, 4.07 xFIP) aren’t exactly whistling Dixie; they’re closer to ‘fixing dinner from stuff found on the floor of a Winn-Dixie.’ “Toomgis hate Winn-Dixie. Their bath salts are lame.” I know, Toomgis, I know. Flaherty won’t appear in the top 100 for the 2nd half that’s coming tomorrow, but at least he’s headed to the break looking better than he has all year, even if it was vs. the Aints. By the way, I hear the Orioles are going to pitch on Monday to stay in game shape. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Fantasy Baseball Streamers, Ride the Wave: First-Half Recap Edition

FanDuel: All-Star Blues

Today is the last day of baseball before the three most dreaded words of the summer are uttered: All-Star break. It’s not all bad though, we get a tiny break from setting our season long lineups at least. Still, there will be no moneies to be made for the next few days. So, let’s be sure to enjoy our well-deserved rest, but push for one last score so we can soak it up while we rest.

We’re about halfway through the marathon folks. I hope for real that your teams are doing well. Wait, who am I kidding? You read Razzball. Of course your teams are doing well! This is the month we celebrate our independence from the evil French, from whom we captured many an airport in the early 1700s to win the war of 1812. When I reflect on my country, I usually do so in blissful ignorance of how things actually work while I drink beer and narrowly avoid catastrophic injury via fireworks. Is there any other way? Heading into July, here are the prospects I think have the best chance of promotion and an impact for redraft leagues.

Deep Impact: Gurriel(s) Like You

I spent 24 hours, and I wish I had more hours, writing and rewriting this post for you. This is a tough cat to understand. So many things point to positives, but there are still a few underlying issues that make you wonder if it’s real. Since being recalled from minors Lourdes Gurriel Jr., of the Swinging Gurriels, is destroying baseballs at a .355/.401/.739 clip with 14 HRs in 152 PAs. That would roughly pace him for a 60 HR season. No big deal right? He might be the hottest bat in all the land.

Almost Saved By The Bell In Pittsburgh

When I wake up in the morning and the alarm gives out a warning and I don’t think I’ll ever make it on time. By the time I grab my books and I give Razzball a look, I’m at the website just in time to see the news fly by. It’s alright ‘coz I’m saved by Josh Bell. Was Samuel “Screetch” Powers spotted in Pittsburgh last night? No he was not. Neither were any of the other cast of Saved By The Bell. However, Josh Bell was in attendance. Trailing by five runs going into the ninth, Bell’s three run homer helped the Pirates tied the game. You’d have to be living under a rock not to notice how well Josh has been this year. If it weren’t for Yelich and Bellinger, Bell would be the top choice for the National League MVP. Bell went two for four on the night, but the Pirates ended up falling short in extras. As for Mr. Belding and crew this year marks the 30th anniversary of the show. In related news A.C. Slater and Zack Morris are both blue belts in jiu-jitsu. Perhaps we can get rematch of their fight that took place at Bayside High.

FanDuel: A Ray Of Light

Looks like you survived your July 4th celebrations if you’re reading this. All fingers in tact? Great! Now, let’s use those digits to score some sweet dough in tonight’s seven game Main slate on FanDuel. My pitcher du jour tonight is none other than Razzball favorite, Robbie Ray ($9,300). Ray gets the benefit of facing the Rockies on the road. It’s a DFS staple as old as time itself to pick on the Rockies on the road and tonight is no different. The Rockies own the league’s worst team OPS on the road and to make things even better for our boy Robbie, the Rockies are currently tied for the league lead in strikeouts before the Friday night games. With any luck Ray can keep his walks in check tonight and make it out of the fifth for a shot at a win but if not, the chance of 10+ strikeouts makes his price worth it.

Rolling In The Deep: First Half, (Very) Deep League AL Standouts

Last week we took a look at a few NL players who’d been mentioned in one of my posts this year, all of whom had gone from 0 or 1%-owned types to viable fantasy options in shallower leagues. (Note that I’m only mentioning players I’ve already talked about this year, which excludes a lot of the deep-league studs and surprises, as so many of them zoomed up the ownership charts so quickly in a week that they didn’t qualify as deep-leaguers by the time I was posting for the week). Now we’ll do the same for a few American League players, once again thinking about whether or not they’ll be able to continue making a fantasy impact in the second half of 2019.

Franklin’s Buy-Be-Que

The Jurickson store called and they’re out of you so please report back to your nearest Jurickson store, because the A’s called up Franklin Barreto, who was named PCL Player of the Month. I just want to see Barreto on top of a Caprese salad, and then I’m going to dream I’m in Tuscany with Diane Lane and will hang a Do Not Disturb sign from my door for three whole minutes. “Diane, did you enjoy that as much as I did?” “I’ve never been satisfied. Can I call you Hugh Jack-in-the-Box?” “I’d be honored.” Then we return from Tuscany and get bogged down in bills…stress…PTA meetings, but we’d always have three minutes in Tuscany to remember fondly. In June, Franklin Burrata collected nine homers, three lasagnas and 13 doubles, and he hit .387 with 32 RBIs. His overall minors numbers were 65/12/48/.296/13 in 277 ABs. He’s now on his 3rd call-up to the majors, and each time his Ks have skyrocketed like the fireworks that Diane saw in her eyes after our three minutes. Franklin Barreto will be the A’s regular second baseman moving forward, and Bob Melvin is excited to see what he can do. I’m with Bob! Which is what I say in every south Florida massage parlor, after explaining I want Lui-Sue to pretend she’s Diane Lane. Anyway, here’s some more players to Buy or Sell this week in fantasy baseball:

Bear or Bull: The Swinging Pillar

There’s a dance I perform every week or so. I’ll be in the bathroom when a fly (I’m guessing they are related because all know the protocol) will say “What’s Up?” and start the proceedings. It will spin around my head and buzz my dome like Maverick and Goose in Top Gun. I’ll swipe my right arm up, to no avail of course. That’s my way of acknowledging what’s about to go down. The fly will then zoom around. Me, armed with a towel will blindly swing away. The fly responds by zig zagging like an F-15 fighter getting chased by a squadron of MIGs that just unleashed a volley of air-to-air missles. Once in a while, I’ll get lucky and down the culprit, but more often than not, I’ll hear: Bzzzzzzzzz. Bzzzzzzzzzz. That’s fly trash talking. This is when I go “Woooo sah, wooooo sah,” calibrate my sights, pay heed to William Wallace, then…..Snap, crackle, and pop. The Wicked Fly of the North is dead! Hooray! I need to be patient when I swing. Kevin Pillar, of the San Francisco Giants, on the other hand, has a completely different philosophy. It’s working, though, as he’s been the #22 player over the past month on the Razzball Player Rater. Over the past seven days, he’s been the #18 player. Bear or Bull?

FanDuel: Zack Attack Is Back Baby

Not gonna lie to you guys. I started the weekend early. My father-in-law forced (nope) shots on me and we watched fireworks on the forth and, so, of course I’m 100% drunk…….errrrrrr…….ready to talk about FanDuel’s 13-game slate. We’ll start with Zack Greinke ($9,400), who gets a match-up with the Rockies outside of Coors, as the pitcher I’m locking in as my cash pitcher on FanDuel today. Grienke’s been as solid as they come, sporting a 2.90 ERA with a career-best 3.4% walk rate. His opponent, the Rockies, struggles outside of Coors, but I bet you don’t know how bad they struggle. Guess where they rank in wRC+ against right-handed pitching when they’re on the road. DFL – Dead F Last – with a wRC+ of 69 (noice), which pairs nicely with a 26% strikeout rate. Now that you know my favorite pitcher on FanDuel, let’s take a look at the rest of the slate <takes another shot>. Let’s go!

Boyd Sparks Joy On The 4th

At least one of you is reading this with a bandaged thumb from a fireworks mishap. I had a Cousin Pete (Italian side of the family) who lost the tip of his thumb on the 4th, but rather than stop the festivities, he taped the tip of a hot dog on his thumb to act as a tourniquet for the rest of the 4th, so we could all go about our fun-having business. I suggested my Cugino make a PSA about hot dog tourniquets, but I was turned away by NBC Cares. Let us bow our heads and pray that if anyone loses a finger, may there be a proper-sized hot dog nearby. Okay…*claps hands* Play ball! Yesterday, Matthew Boyd went 5 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 9 baserunners (zero walks), 13 Ks, ERA at 3.87. Flavor Flav secures his giant clock to his chest with one hand and pumps his fist with his other hand, “Yeah Boyd!” Boyd was the 1st pitcher with less than 6 IP, zero walks and 13 or more Ks. You kinda have to get hit around a bit to have that record, but, damn, that’s impressive. Let’s hear it for the Boyd, let’s hear it for the…MATT! See what I did there? No one saw that coming! Not a soul! Boyd is one of the few guys in the entire major leagues who is pitching better than his ERA would indicate. I’m kidding, everyone’s ERA is crap! But Boyd’s been very special — 11.9 K/9, 1.7 BB/9, 3.33 xFIP — and is looking like a solid number two with upside. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
