The best 2020 fantasy baseball team is a misnomer. Thankfully, none of us know what misnomer means. Sounds to me like someone tentatively wants to date the Travelocity Gnome’s daughter, “Miss Gnome, er, you wanna grab some boba and chill?” Miss Gnome brushes back her hair and bats her eyelashes that are almost as long as her two-and-half foot body, “I’d love to,” but her voice is high-pitched, which is a turn-off, so you cancel plans with her repeatedly until she gets the hint. Sorry, Miss Gnome, I like my women’s voices low like their stature. Any hoo!  So the title is a bit of a superlative. What was I gonna say, “The Mostly Kinda Good Fantasy Baseball Team?” You’ll get over your scoffing; I have faith in you. This is the best 2020 fantasy baseball team that I can put together when drafting from my top 100 for 2020 fantasy baseball and top 500 for 2020 fantasy baseball. Honestly, I could draft another 25 teams from those lists, and they’d all be different, but equally terrific… Well, one of the twenty-five would only be sorta terrific, but it would be really hard to tell which one that is. If I took Adalberto Mondesi in the 2nd round, everything after would change. If I took Trea Turner in the 1st round, everything after would change. I’ve previously gone over my 2020 fantasy baseball draft prep for the first few rounds and pitchers pairings.  For this exercise, I’m taking Fernando Tatis in the first, because, well, people complained previously I always did this post by taking the first pick, so I’m switching it up, like when you combover your hair right instead of left. Until pick 100, I’m taking one guy somewhere in every fifteen picks. It would be nice if I was in a league where someone drafted Gerrit Cole and deGrom in the first two rounds and I was able to take Trevor Story in the 2nd round (which is likely), but since Tatis and him are in my first 14 picks, according to the rules I’ve set up for myself, I can’t take them both. Then, as we all know, once you get into the 100s, there’s wide gaps between ADP and where players are actually taken. People tend to look at team need over value. So for this exercise, once I get to pick #101, I’m going to pick two players every twenty picks. Finally, because there is so much latitude in the last 300, I gave myself free rein to fill up my team after pick 200. Throughout the draft, I also gave myself the ability to reach to a lower draft pick, but not reach forward. Or reach around, if you’re feeling frisky. It should still be my ideal team…or not. Let’s see, shall we? Bee tee dubya, this team is a 12-team, 5×5, one catcher, 5 OFs, MI, CI, 1 UT, 9 P, 3 bench, just like the Razzball Commenter Leagues (go sign up).  Anyway, here’s the best 2020 fantasy baseball team:

C: Mitch Garver (20)
1B: Christian Walker (10)
2B: Scott Kingery (11)
SS: Fernando Tatis Jr. (1)
3B: Rafael Devers (2)
MI: Paul DeJong (16)
CI: Michael Chavis (15)
OF: George Springer (3)
OF: Ramon Laureano (5)
OF: Oscar Mercado (6)
OF: Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (13)
OF: Bryan Reynolds (17)
UTIL: Austin Hays (21)

P: Lucas Giolito (4)
P: Lance Lynn (7)
P: Brandon Woodruff (8)
P: Craig Kimbrel (9)
P: Kenta Maeda (12)
P: Edwin Diaz (14)
P: Ryan Yarbrough (18)
P: Mitch Keller (19)
P: Seth Lugo (22)
Bench: Freddy Peralta (23), Yoshihisa Hirano (24), Brandon Kintzler (25)

SO, THIS TEAM IS BETTER THAN GETTING PAID BY THE GUY FROM THE FYRE FESTIVAL WHO PAYS IN ORAL SEX FAVORS, BUT IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU CAN DRAFT THIS EXACT TEAM?

No. Sorry, I don’t mean to be short with you. Here, let me explain it to you with a long-form answer:  Noooooooooooo.  As I said in the opening, this is an exercise to give you an idea of a team I wouldn’t kick out of bed. With this exercise, I don’t look at ADP, so it’s nice that I think I can draft Brandon Woodruff after the top 100, but he’s regularly being drafted prior to that. On the other hand, I can draft Adalberto Mondesi as late as 75th overall in ESPN leagues, but since we were going off my rankings, I wasn’t able to draft him for this exercise. So, Grey’s rankings Gwyneth and they taketh away her acting career after the age of 40. Because I just have to share with you this little tidbit — a tiddiebittie? — my “best” team post last year was insane. Here’s my team I wrote up in this post last year:

C: Jorge Alfaro (22)
1B: Cody Bellinger (3)
2B: Rougned Odor (8)
SS: Trea Turner (1)
3B: Miguel Andujar (6)
MI: Jonathan Villar (7)
CI: Luke Voit (17)
OF: Aaron Judge (2)
OF: Michael Conforto (5)
OF: Harrison Bader (13)
OF: Ramon Laureano (15)
OF: Ian Happ (16)
UTIL: Nick Senzel (19)

P: Walker Buehler (4)
P: Shane Bieber (9)
P: Luis Castillo (10)
P: Sean Doolittle (11)
P: Jose Alvarado (12)
P: Nick Pivetta (14)
P: Matt Shoemaker (18)
P: Ross Stripling (20)
P: Brad Boxberger (21)
Bench: Dellin Betances (23), Diego Castillo (24), Pedro Strop (25)

That team would’ve beat you in a 12-team league. I’m sorry. I would’ve. I won my RCL last year, and would’ve won yours too. Stop giggling about Pivetta! He wouldn’t have mattered in a 12-teamer. Also, you can come for me saying I don’t know what I’m doing by not drafting starters early, but that shizz is water off a duck’s back. You only need to get three starters right. If I had Bieber, Buehler and Castillo last year, I was winning the league in pitching, and Turner, Villar, Bellinger and the rest of that mess on offense could’ve been fixed in-season, and I would’ve fixed it and won. Don’t believe me? Sign up for an RCL, sucker! It’s free. Here’s the Razzball Commenter League signup.

PARDON ME, FANTASY MASTER LOTHARIO, BUT DID YOU FORGET TO DRAFT A FIRST BASEMAN?

Well, due to my rankings weighing Matt Olson so heavily at 21 overall, he didn’t work for this team, because of false constraints I put on myself. If we were in an actual draft, my 1st three rounds here likely would’ve been Tatis, Devers, Olson, because Olson’s ADP is much lower than my ranking. The reason why I wanted Devers after Tatis is because he balances FTJ’s possible average issues. Then, as we know from my top 20 1st basemen, the position gets bare-ass cold for many rounds in the middle until the end of the top 100, then we get back into sleepers after the top 100. I wrote a Christian Walker sleeper, and think he’s way undervalued. Some time in the middle of 2020 people are gonna start saying stuff like, “Christian Walker is the new Paul Goldschmidt,” and I’m gonna say that I said that nonsense four months ago.

GREY, YOUR MUSTACHE IS YOGA PANTS ON THAT HOT MOM PICKING UP MY FRIEND FROM DETENTION, BUT WHAT GIVES WITH THE BENCH? NO BENCH BATS?

First off, welcome to the site. Get comfortable. That doesn’t mean put your feet on the furniture. What’s wrong with you? I’m saying welcome because I’ve been saying for years I don’t draft bench bats. If you didn’t know that, you’re new. It’s okay. We were all new once. Shoot, I love that new person smell. Don’t draft bench bats in 12 team and shallower leagues. They’re useless. You’re not going to hold them for longer than a few days after your draft. Now, if you draft a few middle relievers with your last few picks, maybe — just maybe — you’ll luck into a closer getting injured during the preseason, and, if that doesn’t work out, then you can drop the middle relievers without any hesitance. It’s more of a hindrance to have someone like, say, Mauricio Dubon on your bench because, then this happens, “It looks like Edwin Diaz might be hurt, who should I grab in the Mets’ bullpen for saves? Hmm…Actually, who should I drop? Should I drop Dubon? He’s seems like he could breakout– Forget it, it’s too late, someone else grabbed Seth Lugo and Betances and Gsellman and Justin Wilson and, damn, the Mets have a lot of good relievers.” And then Lugo (or Betances) goes on to save 40 games and win the Rollie Rolaids award. Oh, and in deeper leagues, bench bats are okay (within reason). This does not mean I wouldn’t own a bench bat all year, just no reason to draft one.

CAN I TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR TEAM AND SEND IT TO MYSELF OVER ELECTRONIC MAIL AND PUT A RED FLAG ON THE EMAIL INDICATING IMPORTANT?

Yes, be my guest. The only thing is you don’t want to get too caught up in trying to replicate my draft because if someone else takes a guy you want, you’re gonna start scrambling and then sweating and then sharting your sweatpants. Just build the best team you can and use my example as a guide. For s’s and g’s, go to my top 500 and put your best fantasy baseball team into the comments below.

    Dear Grey,
I’m sorry Giancarlo hurt you last year, I hope you two made up over Valentines day. Rudy has him hitting 49hrs – 15 more Hrs than your projections. I dont like it when you and Rudy disagree. Make it right with Rudy or Giancarlo – if anyone is going 15hrs higher it’s gotta be you. 64 bombs!
Just traded for Giancarlo- no regerts!
    Appreciate the consistent insight

i’m going to go out on a limb and say that sexy Giancarlo hits 45 HR this year, plays in 140 games, and ends up a top-10 OF.

Giancarlo hurt me last year. We wrassled with our love and not the good kind of wrassling, like with whipped cream, and now Giancarlo has come between Rudy and I…I’m not sure what’s been worse for me — BTW, I just drafted Giancarlo on Friday, will discuss tomorrow

Dynasty league. I’ve owned mazara for a while. Would you rather keep mazara and hope he ever lives up to his pedigree or would you keep grisham instead, cost neutral decision? Obp league. Mazara doesnt run and although only 24 seems like he has been around forever. Dont know if a change new team / fresh start will help, but he is not good defensively, still cant hit lefties and could be platooned. He hasnt really shown any skills growth. I realize some guys take longer and growth is not linear, but some guys bust or never live up to their prospect hype. Thanks

    • The Great Knoche says:

I’d want Mazara. Staying in a good hitters park, you know you are getting 20-25 HRs and decent counting stats. I don’t see him platooning with anyone right now in Chicago. Grisham had monster year across three levels, but struggled some in majors with Ks. PLus there will still be some playing time crunches with Franchy still there.

    Hi Grey and Itch,
Love the site and your posts. The only fantasy site that always makes me laugh!
    Keeper question:
I’m in a league where you can keep 5 guys where you drafted them for up to 4 years and one player who must be ROY eligible.
    Options:
Buehler (21st round, 2 years remaining)
Flaherty (18th round, 2 years remaining)
Albombso (16th round, 3 years remaining)
Meadows (15th round, 3 years remaining)
Albies (20th round, 1 year remaining)
Woodruff (19th round, 3 years remaining)
Gallen (21st round, 3 years remaining)
    ROY eligible:
    Puk
    Whitley
I saw the rankings, but with the extra wrinkle of control years, who would you keep?

    • Donkey Teeth

Felt like getting people’s feedback about Lance Mccullers? Does he make it thru year or does he get capped at say 150 innings?

My pick of mcculler would be around pick 200 or so which i believe is roughly his adp.

I have risky staff going with snell, paddack, luzardo, maeda, and gallen thus far and hendricks and colome for closers.

    • Cram It says:

I’d say 150 IP is very optimistic. And I don’t think he gets too close to that.

I like McCullers a lot around pick 200 but do agree with Cram…temper innings expectations

Decided to take Mccullers at 203 and see where it gets me.

My whole staff is risky so why not continue the trend, haha.

Guess I should go with a more stable starter or two for last few starter picks. Maybe Adrian Houser or Ryan yarborough or Mitch Keller types.

I’m thinking of joining a couple leagues with different scoring formats than the standard 5×5.
They still are roto scoring and 12 teams. What set of ranks should I follow?

    1. An OPS league as the 6th cat. Should I just use Rudy’s ranks as a guide?

    2. An OBP league vs BA, and also holds and save vs just saves? Any extra advice from anyone would be appreciated.

    Awesome Best 2020 report, man.

    a. No misnomer or oxymoron seen herein. Good team.

    b. Have a job interview for an actual job. The application form I completed was one of my best (if not my best) efforts ever so I’m proud of myself also convinced that if I focus and reply accordingly I could get the job I want. I know it sounds retarded, apologize.

    c. I have to figure out how to get back into work mode as opposed to the mode I’ve been in since July 1 2018 – kind of scratching, taking out the garbage, taking the dog for ‘walks’ and applying for jobs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will look up in google too how to get back into ‘work’ mode after an extended period of unemployment.

        a. Our daughter’s boyfriend, yeah I forgot to mention there was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE breakup with the Seaman. He almost crashed the ship he was he was comandeering, got sh*t-faced drunk on the deck and then proceeded to vomit all over the deck. Then he took it really personally and sent all kinds of nasty messages to our daughter to my mother-in-law (he parked his car in my mother-in-law’s garage, mistake city), his father also shared some nasty comments with my mother-in-law. So, yeah he ain’t gonna be taking our dog for any ‘walks’ this century or millennium.

        b. So awesome that Coug’s mother went to HS in the town next door at the same time. I guess it was a cool time to be alive (the 60s).

Keeper league, 16 teams keep 12. $260 budget salaries rise $5 each season 6×6 OPS, K/9 & QS. Starting pitching is gold in this league (hard to find expensive to aquire)
    Current keepers:
    Meadows $15
    Huira – $7
    Clevinger – $6
    Lynn – $11
    Semien -$20
Stanton – $60( bought him for pennies)
    Snell – $25
    Flaherty – $25
    Buehler – $16
    Sano – $19
    Alonso – $6
    S. Marte – $37

Great write up. I like them teams. Well, the skies parted on Saturday and I took advantage and signed up for my first auction draft ever in 20 yrs of online FBB. Did the NFBC Online Auction Championship. I had a few technical difficulties and there was a weird glitch where I couldn’t bid on Kevin Newman who I wouldve gotten for $4. I got Mazara for $3 on auto when I lost connection but otherwise I got who I went after. This is the team I wound up with:

    Realmuto, J.T. C
    Vazquez, Christian C
    Alonso, Pete 1B
    McMahon, Ryan CI
    Tatis Jr., Fernando SS
    Mondesi, Adalberto MI
    Dozier, Hunter OF
    Berti, Jon 3B
    Marte, Ketel 2B
    Ohtani, Shohei UTIL/P
    Mazara, Nomar OF
    Calhoun, Willie OF
    Pillar, Kevin OF
    Aquino, Aristides OF/UT
    Verdugo, Alex OF

    Fletcher, David SS/3B/2B/OF
    Ford, Mike 1B

    Giolito, Lucas P
    Lamet, Dinelson P
    Rodriguez, Eduardo P
    Odorizzi, Jake 19 274 P
    Anderson, Nick 20 297 P
    DeSclafani, Anthony P
    Civale, Aaron P
    Yarbrough, Ryan P

    Plesac, Zach P
    Yamamoto, Jordan P
    Peralta, Freddy P
    Fiers, Mike P
    Davies, Zach P

You might notice I wound up with Ohtani. WTF? It was unexpected but impulsively I realized I really like him as a DH-only until May 15ish and felt he could be a good value at $12. I wouldn’t have taken him without that announcement unless he was even cheaper. But this equates to what, like 170-200 overall as a $12 pick?

    • Dave D says:

These are the prices, FYI. Like I said, my first auction. I few a stectched a little, a few good deals as one would expect. Closers were almost all going over AAV so I settled on N. Anderson at $8 and figures I’d use my FAAB to splurge at some juncture and dump one of my overstock.com SP’s.

Yeah, $12 ain’t bad…I drafted Giancarlo on Friday bc the price was insanely low… Everyone has a price, right — Speaking of prices, Ketel is insanely low — That is a great team, love the 1st 5 guys…Don’t love high priced catcher, but whatever….I also think your pitching looks right on…Aquino for $2 could be such a steal if he can get PT

      • Dave D says:
        (link)

Yeah, thanks. I knew you’d not like Realmuto but whatevs. I’m glad you like the team,. I think that’s the most sold SP staff Ive had in a while. I like being able to target specific players. There are definitely more creative strategic possibilities with an auction. It was super fun and, yeah, I’m pretty happy with the team. And Aquino for $2? Love it!

          Grey says:

Yeah, that’s a relatively shallow league so pitching is gonna be a little more pumped up

          • Dave D says:
            (link)

Yeah, my top five starters should be pretty clear plus Civale/ Yarborough 6/7. If either don’t work out I’ll have Pleseac/Yamamoto/ Fiers/Davies ( possibly Ohtani) as fillers. Drafting Ohtani as a 6/7 starter makes more sense to me but where he was going earlier (80-110) would land him as a 2/3 which seemed nutz to me.

    Hi Grey!

first time commenter & customer .. bought Rudy’s tools last week & joined a few RCLs for 2020

drafted for my 1st 12 team league of 2020 and these are the results ..

    C – Salvador Perez
    1B – Matt Olson
    2B – Ozzie Albies
    3B – Yoan Moncada
    SS – Trea Turner
    CI – Miguel Sano
    MI – Fernando Tatis Jr.
    OF – Brian Anderson
    OF – J.D. Davis
    OF – Ramon Laureano
    OF – Eddie Rosario
    OF – Scott Kingery
    UT – Nelson Cruz

    bench:
Evan White / Sean Murphy / Ian Happ

    P – Yu Darvish
    P – Max Fried
    P – Matt Boyd
    P – Griffin Canning
    P – Lance Lynn
    P – Mitch Keller
    P – Ian Kennedy
    P – Hector Neris

    bench:
    – Brendan McKay
    – Zach Eflin
    – Michael Lorenzen
    – Jose Alvarado
    – Tony Watson

no trades in the league (& weekly lineup locks) .. free for all on the waiver wire .. so 2 questions ..

1.) am i crazy to roster jose alvarado & tony watson as dark horse closer targets to begin the season? beat reporter for the giants says that watson will get the most save opps to begin the season as the Giants try to build up trade value and then shift to shaun anderson later in the year. watson reworked his contract w/ the team over the offseason and is the only veteran presence in the pen (w/ some closing experience) but how many games will the Giants afford him a save chance?

as for jose alvarado, he dealt w/ off the field issues for most of last season along w/ nagging injuries. his family had problems living in venezuela and they depend on jose for financial needs. the rays helped bring his entire family to America this offseason and the organization is very high on him (pitching coach says he could be the best reliever in the AL this year). basically everything that could go wrong for him last year did go wrong so I’m thinking while everyone pontificates about Nick Anderson, Diego Castillo & Colin Poche .. Alvarado could be the real value of them all ..

both players mentioned are LEFTIES .. and with the new 3 batter minimum rule .. we could see teams go to them more often than before .. am i wasting my time with these fantasies in a 12 teamer?

2.) something intuitively is telling me to pick to up Maikel Franco (this year’s Soler?) & Corbin Burnes (this year’s Giolito?) .. are these crazier thoughts than rostering Alvarado & Watson in a league of this size?

    Thanks!

    • return2earth says:
      (link)

also, forgot to mention .. drafted Brandon Kintzler as well .. so could easily drop some of these closer dart throws from the roster to make pick ups

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Nice! Glad to hear it!

      1. I drafted Alvarado on Friday in my 1st draft and would draft Watson — but I think I have him projected for like 13 saves, so not much there

I agree on Alvarado…People are assuming Anderson, but I’m not sure why

      2. I like Burnes, but Maikel has some serious batted ball profile issues…He looks like a 24-homer, .245 hitter

      • return2earth says:
        (link)

thanks Grey! going to drop Watson and stash Burnes instead. been reading this offseason that he hired a mental health coach, got Lasik surgery & is refining his pitch mix to go away from his fastball and focus more on his insane slider. everyone is pumping Woodruff but Burnes has a legit chance at being the ace of the staff this year.

i’m with you on Maikel .. the only reason for optimism with him is that the Royals specifically noticed issues with his swing while he was w/ the Phillies and he was an immediate target for the org as soon as he was available. Franco spent the offseason working w/ the bench coach, soler and perez to work on hitting mechanics / launch angle adjustments .. all of the reports state that Maikel is extremely motivated to put his bad reputation behind him (he even cut his dreads and looks noticeably in better physical shape) and the Royals want to give him every opportunity to play this season (and potentially for years to come) at 3rd base. Maikel does have prospect pedigree and is technically entering his prime age-wise (same time Soler, Merrifield & Dozier broke out).

so i guess my conundrum is that Evan White is the unknown shiny new toy who could get 500+ ABs and provide potentially 15-25 hrs / .255-270 avg / 3-5 steals if everything goes right .. or he could be back in the minors by May to make adjustments and has the same 1st season as Scott Kingery .. while i could see Franco putting up at minimum 20 hrs & potentially even hitting 30 this year with a .255-270 avg .. both are free on the wire right now and both are slated to bat in the lower part of the lineup to start the season so i’m not sure which makes the most sense to roster .. its like the narrative right now is “Evan White could surprise and Maikel Franco is what is he is” but i’m more of a fan of zigging when everyone is zagging and could see the narrative easily shifting to “Maikel Franco is a surprise and Evan White is what he is” as soon as games are played .. i’d use either one of them as a back up for my 1B / 3B / CI position once Sano obtains 1B eligibility .. push me off the ledge .. White or Franco?

Burnes is a great sleeper, I like him…

Yeah, Maikel is just a mess…If he overhauls his entire swing, he can break out, but he should’ve overhauled it 4 years ago and still hasn’t

White is more interesting than Maikel from an upside perspective, but White might be painful to own too

Doesn’t seem to bad. Lot of options to zig and zag with pitchers. I’m finding out through multiple drafts that you can’t have a great infield and outfield at the same time. SS is deep, 2nd base is not. Guys like Moose, Muncy, Escobar, Dozer, Davis, Anderson, Kingery, Mancini, McMahon are all nice grabs for lineup manuverbility. Not as a whole but to know they are out there if you get in a bind.

    14 team mixed auction ( $260 ) standard 5×5 cats , keep up to 11.
    My current keepers:
    Meadows $9
    Mercado $10
    Kingery $10

    Also have ABreu $25

who I am throwing back into free agency , but I have changed my mind 50 times about this.

Was just offered E Rosario $14 for Calhoun $10 and Kingery $10
Was also offered by another team Lamet $10 and either N Anderson or Neris ( both $10 ) for Bieber $17

    My Monday morning questions are
    1. based on the 13 players I named above, do I have the correct 11 as keepers ?
    2. what side of the first trade offer
    3. what side of the second trade offer

Morning grey (and others)! Was curious about some advice you gave me last week. 8×8 h2h cats (hr, XBH, rbi, r, ops, avg, Net sb, and K’s). You recommended arenado and tatis for 1st/2nd round picks. Was looking back and saw you had treat urner ranked higher than tatis. Would you rather tatis? Just because of the upside or was it an oversight?

    • Grey

Turner/Arenado is ideal — If you want Arenado, then Arenado/Tatis if Turner is gone

Haha no – i was asking arenado/tatis vs arenado/turner. Sounds like arenado/turner is your preference. But looking at it a bit more, once I account for keepers, I doubt I can get both. Might have better luck pulling off turner/Bregman.

Hi Grey, I am in 10-team keeper league, we re-draft every 4 years and this year is a new start.
I am the 10th pick and draft is snake. So my first 4 rounds are at 10th, 11th, 30th, and 31st.

I plan to draft players under 27 or 28 years old.
It’s difficult for me to draft top players which most of them are OF.
So I target to pick SS at my 10th pick.

If Story, Tuner, Tatis are still there when I draft (I think Lindor should be gone..) , who should I draft in the 4 years keeper league? thanks.

I read your article about pairing for first 2 rounds, I should draft Bryce Harper or 1B/3B at my 11th pick.

I think I should be able to draft Olson at my 30th pick, so I should draft an OF or 3B at 11th pick. However, Rendon is elder so I wouldn’t choose him.

        So,
        1. Harper or Devers at my 11th if they are still there?
        2. Harper or Arenado at my 11th if they are still there?

        Thoughts appreciated.

          • Wilson says:
            (link)

            Thanks.

If I’ve got Story, Harper or Arenodo in my first 2 picks, I am thinking to steal Olson at my 50th pick, which is possible due to shallow league.

And plan to use 30th and 31st picks to draft another OF (if 11th is Arenado) or 3B ((if 11th is Harper) and a SP, especially if there is still good SP (eg Snell).

By the way, scores include QS and W in my league, so I am thinking to draft a SP at 30th pick. Thoughts appreciated.

    Enjoyed your writeup very much!

I’m in a 14-team Keeper Dynasty League. H-2-H format, with a ton of scoring categories except: No OPS/AVG scoring for hitters, NO WIP for pitchers.

Allowed unlimited keepers from last years roster if you choose (resign them for 1 yr contract only). Less players you keep, higher your draft spot etc…27 roster spots.

Have to make my decision on keepers before knowing which players will be added for the draft.

    I’m keeping:
    -Trout, Soler, Blackmon, Dahl (gross)
    -Bichette, Carlos Santana, Salvador P
    -Snell, Maeda, Gallen, Odoruzzi
    (skipping RP)

    Keeper decisions:
Voit, Encarnacion, Luchessi, Matt Boyd, Caleb Smith.

    I have NO 3B or 2B.

Got a trade offer: Josh Donaldson for Matt Boyd or Jorge Soler straight up.

Never been a fan of Donaldson bc of injuries, but no better alternatives at 3B. Boyd is giving lots of Ks which helps in my format.but I’m intrigued with Solers bat.

    I’m leaning Boyd for Donaldson?

Keep Luchessi for backend of rotation?

Hate that the league commissioner did not cap Keepers. In a 14-team league there is no incentive to NOT resign your “good players”.
It’s a continuation of last year’s teams essentially.

-Last year I’d have zero hesitation dumping Voit and Encarnacion before draft. With player pool so thin this year, I’d be giving away power categories it seems.

Anyways, I appreciate your input on the trade offer and keeper issue!

Grey, Love the site and appreciate all you and the gang (and the Razzball community!)do for us fantasy players. I LOVE this time of year! 9 team NL only 23/260 5×5 long time keeper. I can keep 11, but I have questions. In 3 of last 4 years our winner punted saves. I think I’m keeping:

    1. Flaherty $15 (can go $20 for 2 years or this is his last – extend?)
    2. Paddack $1
    3. Soroka $10
    4. Mookie $3 (I had a $3 Verdugo, thank you very much!)
    5. S Marte $28
    6. Edman $1
    7. B Anderson $2
    8. Grisham $2
    9. Walker $10 (now that I’ve read your thoughts)
    10. Bryant $29
    11. Cueto $3, Kimbrel $7, Musgrove $4, Franchy $1 (Grisham insurance?)

The best guys go for $40+. Best available hitters this year are Yelich, Bellinger, Harper, Albies, Villar.

Who is my 11th keeper and would you sub anyone else out for one of those 4?
With Mookie so cheap, would I be nuts to overspend for one of the top guys and look at having 2 great players for $50 or so?
Do I keep Bryant knowing that if he gets traded to AL I lose him?

    Thank you!

Got some rookies could keep for $5 as well but didn’t think they’d make the cut as plan on competing.
      Pearson, Grisham, Carlson, J.D Davis

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Meh, prolly Ryu over Gallen and just redraft Lynn, but if you want Lynn instead it’s fine with me…Solid keepers!

      • Ontilt1377 says:
        (link)

Ryu vs Lynn is the one I keep flip-flopping over?!

Right now I think I like Lynn’s K’s more & can get Ryu back in the draft easier if I want/need him. Tried to package Ryu and very little interest so far.
But will prob keep changing my mind back and forth over the next month.

        Thanks!

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Yeah, it’s close…I just think Lynn might be cheaper in drafts than Ryu to get him back, but prolly pretty even

            (link)

Give me Gallen pitching in the NL West over Ryu pitching in the AL East and Toronto and his injury history. Gallen has more upside as well. IMO.

You have so many good keepers, it’s hard choice…I wouldn’t hate it if you went a different way with Soler (not Muncy tho); I was thinking Keeper-wise with Stanton — Severino has bigger upside for a keeper

I’ve been drafting a slow draft of 40 rounds in a best ball points league over the weekend. Thanks to your advice I grabbed an ace & drafted more pitching then I usually do. Some mistakes were made for sure but overall not bad …hard to switch my focus on total points instead of drafting to balance categories.
    Here my team so far.
Bats: Acuna (1), Trea (24), Rizzo (48) (got sniped on Olson), Chapman(61), Mondesi (72) (no MI or CI but 3 utility slots) & Laureano (96)
Arms: Giolito (25), Paddack (49), Yates (97) (ended up being too early but with 22 picks before my next I jumped), Ray (120), & Odorizzi (121)

I know I need some power & I have plenty of speed although HR=SB as far as points go.
How does it look so far?? Suggestions as far as depth or what to try to focus on?
    Thanks for all your help

    • Grey

      Grey says:

        (link)

        Thanks I appreciate the input!!
I also need a 2B & they are fairly picked over. Also there are NO multi positional players so you need depth at every position. Also figuring I might want some veteran SP to balance out some of the younger guys who might have shorter outing or get shut down. Being best ball with 40 rounds what you draft is what you have for the entire year.

A little light on starting pitching to be called the best team imo

Hindsight 2020 but since you got so many late closers I woulda liked to see instead of Edwin Diaz in round 14 on this roster maybe like Andrew Heaney in that spot who was probably available. Just don’t trust this staff to be good enough and think it needs another upside SP. Diaz on a short leash anyways, if he blows a couple early saves he could be demoted pretty quickly off last years mess.

Lourdes Gurriel is so slept on.

    Hey Grey,

14 team auction keeper league ($260 budget) with $5 raises for keepers each year and heavy inflation for stud SPs and bats. Can only keep 6 and plan to keep the following:

    Rendon – $35
    Olson – $26
    Ketel Marte – $6
    Giolito – $10

Need to keep 2 from the following:

    Villar – $13
    Matt Chapman – $11
    Semien – $6
    Darvish – $22
    Woddruff – $10

    Thanks.

With Villar starting the year in the OF, would you keep him at $13 over Olson at $26 and just try to buy Olson back at the auction even at a price over $30?

Trying to finalize keepers; which of these 10 should make the cut? Most are pretty obvious, but wanted to give some idea of the talent on roster. Thanks!

Not sure if you fellas are stil around for input/advice but here goes.

Here is my team thus far in 5×5 roto:
    c – Omar Navarez
    c – tbd
    1b – Matt Olson
    2b – Mike Moustakas
    3b – Nolan Arenado
    ss – Trea Turner
    mi – Elvis Andrus
    ci – Christian Walker
    of – Eloy Jimenez
    of – Luis Robert
of – Yasiel Puig (brain fart and I admit it)
    of – tbd
    of – tbd
    util – tbd

starters – Snell, Paddack, Luzardo, Maeda, Gallen and McCullers so far
closers – Liam Hendricks and Alex Colome

Thoughts as we enter round 19 of 28?

I know it is a risky starting staff and also my brain fart of Puig.

    Another great write up!

Quick question: 14 team H2H points – 12 keeper league. Was offered $26 Nola (one year on contact) and $3 Luzardo (3 years)

for either my 35 verlander (1 year) or 10 giolito (2 years)

Would you take either of those? Considering the verlander deal. I also have Bieber and woodruff.

Seeking Keeper Advice if anyone has energy remaining after the flurry of posts and comments the past couple of days.

12 team 5×5 standard salary cap keeper league
    $260 budget, 25 player team, 6 keepers

    My options are:

    Bellinger, $8
    Soto, $7
    Tatis, $13
    Y. Alvarez, $7
    Dahl, $3
    E. Escobar, $3,
    Lux, $7
    Aquino, $7
    Solak, $7
    Senzel, $7
    Hoskins, $12
    Corbin, $3
    Nola, $12
    J. Jimenez, $2
    Mize, $7

Also have Trout, Scherzer, deGrom as holdovers but they are too expensive to keep ($60-$70 each) in my eyes.

Baseline perspective is that Bellinger, Soto, Tatis, Yordan, Corbin and Nola should get the call. Am I overlooking anyone? I’d want Dahl if he could stay on the field…

Hurt Feelings Report (Yahoo has feelings too Grey, ESPN not so much)

I’m in a14 Team unlimited keepers, h-2-h league with a ton of scoring categories (except Bat AVG, OPS)

    My current keepers:
-Trout, Soler, Blackmon, Bichette, Carlos Santana, Voit, Encarnacion, Donaldson, Salvador Perez, Dahl

    -Snell, Maeda, Odoruzzi, Gallen Luchessi,

    Trade offered to me:

-My Bichette for his Glasnow, A. Mondesi and Lance Lynn.

I do not know alot about Mondesi except he was hurt end of year.

I really don’t want to give up Bichette. I see too much potential.

Other guy also has: Hiura, Robles, F. Reyes, R. Laureano, VLAD and ton top prospects i.e.Wander, Lux, etc..

Your thoughts on trade offer? Or possible counter offer?

    Thanks!
