Last year I learned it’s better to come in 2nd than 1st. I was leading for most of last year but tripped in September and finished in 2nd. At first, I felt defeated, but the longer I sat with my 2nd place finish, the more I realized that 2nd place is first place without being mad if someone doesn’t say congrats to you. 2nd place gets all the modesty while 1st place gets to be all “showy.” 1st place is insane pressure for a follow-up. I might mess around and come in 3rd or 4th this year and who cares! It’s all about setting expectations. I set expectations at “sorta okay things,” so here’s to hurdling them! Okay, this league is a 12-team, NL-Only auction with two catchers, two swingmen (can be pitchers or hitters), an infield slot and a UTIL slot. No corner or middle infielder. Anyway, here’s my Tout Wars team:
First, let’s look at the team I drafted last year that came in 2nd, then I’ll hit you with this year’s.
C: Hunter Goodman – $8
C: Nick Fortes – $1
1B: Michael Toglia – $18
2B: Thairo Estrada – $10
SS: Elly De La Cruz – $40

P: Landen Roupp – $2
P: Jake Irvin – $2
P: Dennis Santana – $1
Bench: Andrew Abbott, Stephen Kolek
Michael Toglia was gross for $18 and Roki wasn’t much better. Pages and Andrew Abbott were awesome and what I’m saying is you need a grain of salt when I show this year’s. Promise? Okay, here’s this year’s:
C: Agustin Ramirez – $18
C: Luis Campusano – $1
1B: Edouard Julien – $3
2B: Willi Castro – $14
SS: CJ Abrams – $22

P: Brandon Sproat – $1
P: Griffin Canning – $1
P: Calvin Faucher – $1
Bench: Jake Irvin, Jose Quintana
OKAY, GIVE ME YOUR WAR ROOM TOTALS SO I KNOW WHAT TO MOCK.
Here’s my Tout Wars, uh, War Room totals, please give your worst:
LET’S TRY TO LEARNS ME SOMETHING TODAY AND GIVE ME YOU FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE PICK FROM HITTERS.
Okay, I could say a few for my favorite pick–
JESUS CHRIST DON’T GIVE ME THE OL’ SONG AND DANCE! JUST THE NAME AND WHY!
Agustin Ramirez is surprisingly my favorite pick.
A’IGHT, YOU THREW ME A BIT WITH THAT ONE. I’LL LET YOU SONG AND DANCE A BIT NOW.
Catchers are not cheap in this league. Hunter Goodman went for $22; Francisco Alvarez went for $15; Will Smith went for $20; William Contreras went for $26. I had Agustin Ramirez down for $19 and I got him for a dollar cheaper. That’s about the best deal I got. That seems insane, but that’s how this league is. There’s no deals. It feels like everyone is using the same sheet of dollar values. I had Juan Soto for $44 and I got him at $50. I like Sexy Dr. Pepper, but that ain’t no deal. I have Mark Vientos for $14 and got him for $9. I guess that’s good, but feels a lot more risky. Honestly, that’s my least favorite, and the chance for the biggest head shake. Prolly most predictable surprise came from getting Eugenio at $22 when I had him for $27, but if I said a vet 3rd baseman as the most surprising pick it wouldn’t have surprised you as much.
WAIT, YOU HAD A MOST SURPRISING PICK AND A MOST PREDICTABLY SURPRISING PICK?
Yeah, does that work?
NO, NOT AT ALL. OKAY, GIVE ME THE MOST SURPRISING PITCHER PICK.
I have Jake Irvin for $2 and got him for free. Lowercase yay, start the parade. That’s not conventionally surprising though.
JUST GIVE ME ONE SURPRISING PICK AND NOT SEVENTEEN OF NINE PITCHERS AS SURPRISING PICKS!
Brandon Sproat went for $1. To me. That’s nuts. Okay, let’s recap. Mets develop players like Ronny Mauricio–Wait, not him. Like Jarred Kelenic–No, can’t blame that on them. They develop players like Brett Baty and Vientos–Okay, not best examples. They have Nolan McLean; he’s supposed to be good. Brewers, on the other hand? They develop everyone well beyond their capability. They turned Quinn Priester from a guy who looked like a swingman into a number two. (He’s injured this year though, and my top 100 starters were updated.) Brewers regularly take guys like Devin Williams and say, “Meh, you can have him in this trade, we have Random Dude In Pen to replace him.” That the Brewers wanted Sproat and he looks destined for their rotation? Well, I moved him into the top 80 starters, and updated the pitchers’ pairing tool. (Top 500 is updated constantly too.) Honestly, I don’t know why Sproat went for a $1. He’s throwing 98 MPH in the spring, and about to be one of the best draft picks.
YOU’RE STARTING TO GET MY EXCITED FOR THIS TEAM, BUT THEN I SEE YOU HAVE LUIS RENGIFO.
Meh, he doesn’t need to do much. I get a 50/50 year from Soto, Cy Young from Sproat, Palencia’s Rollie Fingers up in this mug and Edouard Julien has us all remembering it’s Ed O before U ard? I need a mnemonic badly.
Anyway, to play against us for free, hit up the below links. Once they’re filled, that will be it (and there’s not many left):

Your intro paragraph is very accurate. You were incredibly modest during the draft and didn’t mention last year’s second-place finish a single time. This is the first I’ve heard of it.
Apologies Grey, one more question regarding the value keeper in a 12 team league: PCA round 10 or Jacob Misiorowski round 25? I already have Witt Jr. and Skenes on my team.
Thank you, Kevin
PCA
Funny coincidence – I had the exact same outcome on Reynaldo/Sproat in my 14-team league’s Reserve Draft (we do an auction for the starters and then a 10-round snake slow-draft style). I went Lopez, thinking Sproat would get taken in the 10 picks before my next pick. But he wasn’t. The draft is still ongoing – they were my 3rd and 4th picks. I took Will Warren 1st / Nasim Nunez 2nd.
Excellent!
Cause we’re sharing drafts and I haven’t got to join in yet like normal (This day job stuff is BS), check out the best RCL draft I’ve ever had from the #8 spot. Or probably any spot.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Grey,
NFBC debut for myself and my friend Johnny Toss. Drafted from the 10th slot here. Felt kind of clueless at times, especially when saves flew off the board quickly, but we are happy with how the team turned out. Would appreciate your thoughts as always…

Rooker or Vinnie
Quick question on the Steamer projections…
They seemed to have very low RBI figures. Only two hitters (Judge 100 and Ohtani 101) had RBI totals over 100 which seems way too low. Or am I misinterpreting something?
I don’t think so
In a 10 team Roto league, what do you think about this pitching? Bradish, Mis, Eovaldi, Lodolo, Sheehan, R. Ray, Bednar, Helsley and G. Whitlock.
Seems solid
thank you, went heavy on hitters early.
No problem
Hi Grey, I’m in a 10 team AL-only keeper league. Would you trade Kwan at $18 for Jac Cags at $10?

Hello Grey. Keeper league late rounder, who do you prefer-Hunter Barco or Sproat? Ty
Sproat
Quick Q Grey and thank you:
12 Team league, rather have PCA as a 10th Round Keeper or Jakob Marsee / Hunter Goodman as a 25th Round Keeper?
PCA
I know it’s only spring training, but do you have any interest in TJ Rumfield? Looks like he will open the season starting first baseman in Colorado. High OBP and low strike out. The power has to be there right? He’s 6’5” 225 lbs.
Looks like a guy feasting on terrible pitching, but worth a flyer, why not
Hi Grey – have a keeper deadline at midnight for my very competitive 9×9 Yahoo league where everyone worth a shit gets drafted. We can keep up to 6, and right now I have it set to keep Soto, Vlad, Yordan, Pasquantino, Maikel Garcia and Bryan Woo. Would you keep Jarren Duran over any of these guys? Thanks!
Duran or Maikel is the question, I’d go Maikel

Got into a bidding war I did not want but couldn’t lose on Jrod but I don’t think it derailed me completely.
Obviously you can see where I decided to have to play waivers all year. Despite my bullpen woes (I’m stashing Puk and going to pick up someone when waivers open later in the week) how do you think I did?
Bullpen seems ok, you don’t really need closers in a points SVHLD…Pitching and hitting look excellent otherwise, I think the pitching could just use another SP or two and your hitting looks decent — solid team!
League has a 10 start max week-to-week so 8-9 is the sweet spot.
Ah, ok
Hi Grey,
1.Is their any chance that a manager would trade Eovaldi or Kirby for Wilymer Abreu?
2.One manager has injuries to Suzuki and Butler. His pitchers include Kirby, Abbott and Grayson Rod. Would you ask for any of these pitchers in exchange for Abreu or keep him?
Thank you!
Martin
1. Maybe Eovaldi 2. Kirby would be great but not happening…I’d take Abbott
Grey, First off, how did you ever finish 2nd last year with that motley crew lol? Roki and Toglia helped sink my NL only team. Of course, Mookie and Austin Riley didn’t help. I miss Sirius not broadcasting the live drafts. They were fun. Heard you on there a few years back and loved it!
My 8 team 23/260 5×5 NL only keeper has our keeper deadline coming up. We can keep 11. Unfortunately, I don’t have 11 guys worth keeping. Right now I’m going with…
Vaughn $7
McLain $2 (probably to 7 for 2-year deal)
Carroll $16
Harris $10
Heliot $5
Sanchez $8 (probably to $18 for 3-year deal)
Sheehan $7
Eury $6
Needless to say, I sorta love my pitching. Our young guys (Elly, Skenes, etc.) are usually bargains because they were grabbed late or in the reserves early in their careers and signed to long term deals when their original contracts expire.
Ohtani (hitter) is $45. Soto $37, Tatis $34, Machado $30, etc. On pitching side, Yamamoto $34, Webb $32, Peralta $27, etc.
I have Austin Riley for $29. I THINK I can get him back for that. If not, Suarez, Bregman, Bohm and maybe Noelvia available, but then it drops off a cliff. We talked the other about how bad the NL corners are this year, so I think my plan is to spend up at 1/3 and try to be patient up the middle. Devers, Harper, Busch all available. Do I keep Riley?
Logan Henderson is $6. Love the pitcher and the price, but can’t keep a picture with pre-season elbow trouble, can I?
Do I keep Riley and/or Henderson, or just roll with what I have?
and one last question before I sign up, just to make sure. Can the War Room accommodate a league like mine?
Thank you!!!
Thanks! I don’t know how I finished 2nd either…I picked Pagan and Misiorowski off waivers for free, they helped
I use the war room for my NL-Only league and NL-Only keeper
Just redraft Riley and Henderson if you want them
Thank you! BTW, have you seen Hostage? It’s excellent!
I haven’t but I will check it out! Thanks!
I like your squad – I drafted my home league last night & Yahoo! is glitched – drafts finish, but draft room is stuck open & inaccessible, and rosters didn’t populate.
An hour trying to get to a chat support person, and finally was told “it’s a global issue – engineers are all-hands on deck and it should be resolved soon. Our apologies for the delay, we’re absolutely slammed with tickets & chats”
if only they had a league alert at the top of the page where they could tell us that message. Imagine how much support time/effort they’d save. If only.
jfc I’m so irritated I’m not even gonna post my team for you to mercilessly ridicule. Maybe later when I’m less irritated. lol
Also it’s almost baseball season woooooo!

I don’t know why anyone spends top 20 round picks on closers, but I guess ERA & WHIP matter more to them than me.
Also Marte was a F-up. I had Marte & McLain queued up & well, I’d had a couple of Trulys and thought I could wait another turn on McLain & drafted Marte. Of course he went 2 picks before me at 19.09. So I settled for Stott. Feels like a big whiff with Marte being dropped to 8th in the projected order & McLlain hitting like Babe Ruth right now. Sigh.
OK, flame away, I can take it. I honestly have no idea if I like my team or not. I think I do? I like my first 7 picks? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Oh nice! Hitting looks awesome, maybe a little iffy on MI and 2B but you ounted them so it’s expected and your pitching looks solid if a little risky and upsidey, but that’s to be expected too since you only took one in the top 100
Yeah, I’d always rather have good hitting – this is a very typical build for me. Spam SP and hope for the best.
Hopefully Alvarez doesn’t sprain his mangina again. Dude was made of glass last year.
Yeah, not bad stuff! Hopefulyl Yordan’s got his Yordong on straight
Mmmmmmm, Yordongs. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I’ll have.289/40/100/80 with 0 DL trips if the baseball gods are taking requests? Please and thank you.

Hey there Grey, just wondering when we’ll get the Yahoo and ESPN values articles?
As said a few weeks ago, Yahoo no longer does rankings and ESPN is included in the target articles https://razzball.com/category/fantasy-baseball-sleepers/
Sorry about that, I missed that. Thanks
It would be cool to have a full breakdown of the best and worst values on ESPN, that was always one of my favorite and most helpful articles you put out every year
I hear ya
Not gonna happen though you’re saying?
It is not, sorry
Meh, No problem
Willi Castro on the roster? Championship incoming!
I don’t see how I lose
You have my boy Auggie Ramirez! We cannot fail!
That’s right!
In a 12 team H2H keeper league which counts average and OBP and does holds and saves as separate cats also. My keepers are great so far with: Elly, Julio Rod, Corbin Carroll, Wood, Turang, Alonso, Will Smith.
Thoughts on who I should be targeting with my first pick (dont have a second) with the 10th overall pick. From the remaining pool of players not being kept, according to your rankings, the top 18 would be: Schwarber, Skubal, Jazz, Machdo, Lindor, Trea, Yamamoto, Pasquatino, Edwin Diaz, Cristopher Sanchez, Gilbert, Webb, Braddish, Joe Ryan, Sale, Betts, Olson, Devers. Id take any of the top 6 if available but doubt it, leaving me with Diaz, a bunch of SP1s, and Pasquatino/Betts/Olson. Im leaning SP or Diaz – any thoughts? Is it as easy as taking Diaz if hes there or SP is better route. After my first pick, I next pick in the 3rd round (Alonso is my 2nd rounder). Thanks as always

Good morning. JJ Wetherholt has 2B/3B/SS eligibility at Yahoo. Where would he rank at the extra positions?
He’s ranked, just look at who he’s near https://razzball.com/top-500-for-2026-fantasy-baseball/
Thanks. I wasn’t sure if that took into account extra positions because he’s only listed as a SS. Definitely taking him ahead or Royce at 3B who’s ranked higher. Feels a bit safer, if he breaks camp.
Meh, wanna bump him up a round or two because of more positions? Go for it

Good morning sir,
I am prepping for my draft in a 6×6 with OPS and QS, in an 11 team league.
I am not sure if I am using the ranking tool correctly. When I go to 6×6 OPS this is the top 15. Do I have that correctly with Vlad jumping up, and if not, how would you rank them?

That’s the OPS, yeah https://razzball.com/playerrater-preseason-espnmlb12-6X6ops/
Thanks! With picks 11& 12, I’m hoping for any combo of Vlad, Tucker, Gunnar and JCam.
Yup makes sense…just because Vlad is ranked 5th he doesn’t need to be drafted there
10 team standard 5×5 NL only keeper league. I am filling out final reserve spots and considering guys who can help current season and prospects who can help later this year and beyond.
R. Lowder (CIN) vs A. Miller (PHI)
Obviously different positions and roles they would play on my team in category battles; I’ve seen some very high upside predictions for Miller, so have some curiosity.
I don’t see why we see any significant time from Aidan unless someone gets hurt, so Rhett

It’s a 16 teamer that looks like a 10 teamer on hitting so find better leaguemates? Looks solid on pitching too, but obviously not like the hitting, you need some pitching help and it’s risky
Nice team, did you get 5 first round picks?
Thanks, it’s an auction format where keepers increase by 5 a year and we have to keep 8 under a certain amount, been pretty lucky grabbing a core of Tatis/Caminero/Gunnar/Chourio super cheap years back and then got lucky with Kurtz and Crochet as endgame picks the last few years
Didn’t bother posting the auction values lol
Morning Grey!
Just finished my draft for my keeper/contract league with $250 salary cap and I am afraid to say it…so I think it would be best if your friend MR. ALLCAPS says it for me….I LIKE YOUR TEAM! I am hoping that since he said it, instead of me, it doesn’t ruin my season.
So…I have some decisions to make regarding who to place a contract on from the players that I drafted. For my team, I can assign one 4-year, two 3-year, and three 2-year contracts on players. First, let me share the contracts I am considering giving to players and their current salaries. I will also share the other options I have for choices. Please let me know your thoughts and what you might change. Thanks.
K. Griffin – $0 for 4 years
V. Pasquintino – $15 for 3 years
K. Bradish – $15 for 3 years
T. Soderstrom – $10 for 2 years
G. Cole – $3 for 2 years (hoping he greatly overplays this cost once he returns and into next season)
Agustin Ramirez – $4 for 2 years
Other options:
C. Durbin – $2
D. Lile – $1
E. Cabrera (CHC) – $1
G. Kirby – $26
D. Rasmussen – $5
Cade Smith – $17
A. Abbott – $0
N. Cameron – $0
Again, I can only place contracts on players I drafted this season but these are players on my roster who are either under contract already for this season and next as well as the top options for me to keep for the 2027 season:
Returning players for next season already under contract: B. Harper, N. Marte, J. Lawler, D. Cease, B. Chandler
Also: my best Keeper options (pick 2) will be: J. Chourio, J. Chisholm, J. Merrill, F. Tatis Jr., and J. deGrom.
WHY DID YOU WRITE SO MUCH?
I know. It’s a lot. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts. Let me know if you would make any changes to my current ideas whether changing a player or number of years.
Thanks!
Ha, thanks!Only real question is Soderstrom or Vinnie for the 3 year deal…Otherwise, I don’t see any question marks on what you laid out
I can choose either Soderstrom or Vinnie for a 3 year OR both. I was back and forth between who to give the 3-years to out of Bradish, Soderstrom and Vinnie. Do you think Soderstrom and Vinnie for 3 and Bradish for 2?
I hear ya, Vinnie and Soder is appealing too but then no Bradish? Might make the most sense as pitchers are so fickle
Grey!!
Great team!
Signed up for RCL#26. There’s a discrepancy/ Couldyouclarify?
a. Here it’s listed to take place March 21 at 3:00 PM EDT
b. In the draft room of the same league, the draft date and time is March 26 at 3:00 PM EDT.
I’d prefer ‘a’ if I had my druthers.
Appreciate the clarification.
Cheers,
Ante

Hey Grey,
15 team roto mixed league 5 x 5 using OBP instead of BA keeper league. 5 OF, CI, MI, 2 U. I can keep up to 10 players. I think I have it narrowed down to 11. Who do I leave out? In order of price below.
Thanks in advance!
Tucker – 42
Elly – 25
Naylor – 21
Gore – 12
Lodolo – 12
Pivetta – 11
Gleyber – 10
Dylan Crews – 5
Wili Castro – 6
Stanton – 1
O’Hearn – 1
$267 budget btw.
Either of the last three, I’d leave off Castro, just redraft him if you want him
Thoughts on Grant Holmes?
Velo a little down, don’t trust the 12+ IP scoreless in the spring, command is awful, but solid for a deep league flyer since he can throw a bunch of IP, maybe 120 IP of 4.20 ERA
