Jace Jung was called up yesterday. In Triple-A, he went 14 HRs, .257 with 2 steals. Every Tigers prospect of the last five years had the exact same line. No, not literally, but if you were to tell me 14 HRs, .257, and guess if it’s Torkelson, Carpenter, Justyn-Henry Malloy, Dillon Dingler, Colt Keith or Jung, I’d guess wrong five times before landing on Jace Jung. The Tigers have a type. That type is a Three True Outcome player. Hit a homer, take a walk or take a walk back to the dugout after a strikeout. Thank God for Parker Meadows, he at least adds speed. They saw their success with Riley Greene and were like, “Let’s not duplicate that.” By the way, for this opening, I went to their depth chart to get familiar with the Tigers and they have one starter — Skubal. That’s it. So, Itch’s said of Jung, “A left-handed hitter at 6’0” 205 lbs, Jung hit 28 homers in 128 games across two levels in 2023, slashing .265/.376/.502. He hit 14 home runs at each level but did so in just 47 games at Double-A. The 12th overall pick in 2022, he’ll be running right behind Colt Keith if Keith can’t figure out how to cook at second base. I’d like to cook Grey with fava beans.” What on earth. Jung is fine for a power play in 15-teamers if you got a man in the penalty box, but I’m waiting to see where they actually play him before grabbing. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Trey Sweeney – Also called up by the Tigers. Would’ve included him above, but I think Jung is a step above him, and I was making a thing about power-only guys and Sweeney has speed. Where does he play? I don’t know. Tigers be promoting guys without a real path. It’s not exactly, what do you call it, smart. Sweeney had a 13/16/.254 year in Triple-A with the Dodgers (he came over in the Flaherty trade), and a 26.8% K%. That’s a .210 hitter in the majors, but guys can get hot, and he has speed, so monocle the playing time.

Julio Rodriguez – Out after aggravating his previous ankle injury. Aggravating is the perfect word for JRod’s season.

Bryce Miller – 7 IP, 0 ER, 2 hits, zero walks, 9 Ks, ERA at 3.29. The M’s added Rice Bowl and J. Turner so can’t fault them too much, but the M’s hitting is so lifeless, they made Kenta Maeda (5 2/3 IP, 0 ER) appear in vintage form, and, let me be clear, Maeda has been basically the worst pitcher in baseball all year.

Andres Munoz – 1/3 IP, 1 ER, ERA at 1.35, as he allowed a home run to Javier Baez, who, without exaggeration, is as bad a hitter as Maeda is a pitcher, and it was Munoz’s first home run allowed since May 18th. None of this is fantasy relevant, because shizz happens and Munoz did a shizz, which happens.

Coby Mayo – Sent back to the minors. The Mayo has been put back in the little sauce packet. I repeat, the Mayo is back in the sauce packet.

Cedric Mullins – 1-for-2 and a slam (13) and legs (20). Hard to argue with a guy who has an outside chance for a 20/20 season, because you would be arguing with a computer screen, but Mullins is around the 80th best outfielder in fantasy on the Player Rater, and that’s not very good.

Zach Eflin – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 hits, zero walks, 8 Ks, ERA at 3.72. Thought we were getting an Eflin gem yesterday, but ended up being a “head nod, quietly to self, ‘I like that'”-type of start.

Gunnar Henderson – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 31st homer, and 2nd homer in two games. Wonder if Gunnar tried to get through to Mayo before he was sent down. “Listen, Mayo,” placing hand on shoulder, “BLT needs you, and I’m abbreviating Baltimore and not making fun of your name.”

Wilyer Abreu – 2-for-3 and his 14th homer, 2nd homer in as many games. He should be in this afternoon’s Buy column. Is he? Ummm…Hot Schmotato! (That’s how I remind myself.)

Nick Pivetta – 5 IP, 3 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.49. A gutsy start from Pivetta in Baltimore. [takes finger and runs it down league standings to see if I have a category for ‘gutsy’]

Rich Hill – Signing with the Red Sox. Put Dick Mountain next to Jarren Duran in the clubhouse and get your popcorn ready for the Netflix doc about the Sawx.

Byron Buxton – Hit the IL, breaking his chase of Ripken’s record.

Bailey Ober – 6 IP, 2 ER, 10 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.49. Ya know what he’s doing, right? Ya know, right? He’s putting together a sub-3 ERA 2nd half so we are insane for him all offseason, and then he has a 7+ ERA next April. That’s what this is. I’ve fallen for this tailpipe banana before.

Willi Castro – 1-for-4 and his 10th homer. Have him for steals, and thank you for another homer I don’t need. Lowercase yay.

Cody Bradford – 6 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 2 Ks, ERA at 3.50. I’m intrigued by Cody, but also the Streamonator likes his next one, so I’m ready to get hurt.

Christian Yelich – Will have season-ending back surgery. He’s supposed to be back to start next year, and I’d put his over/under on games played in any season after this at 80. It sucks; nothing more to say. The Yelich we once knew is nevermore. Is that poetry? Guess if it was, I’d know it being a poet and all.

Tobias Myers – 5 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 9 baserunners, 1 K, ERA at 2.81. Not saying this was a great start, but it was vs. the Dodgers and Freddy Peralta gets housed by the Marlins!

William Contreras – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 16th homer, 3rd homer in four games. Contreras remains number one on the Player Rater for catcher, and seems locked into that spot for the 2nd straight year. Oh, Adley Rutschman is now down to 4th, behind Cal Raleigh, which is different than Cal Raleigh’s behind, but equally as big for fantasy.

Jackson Chourio – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 15th homer. He hasn’t hit below .315 for three months. We’re talking about a 20-year-old with 30/30 potential. Whatever is too early next year to draft him, count me for one draft spot in front of that.

Daniel Hudson – 2/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 2.54, as he entered the 8th. This blow up gave the win to Bryan Hudson. Nepo baby!

Nick Castellanos – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 16th homer. The Greek God of Hard Contact has had one of the most boring years–[remembers JRod] Forget it.

Alec Bohm – 1-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 13th homer. On his player page it says he played from May 1st until now. How do we confirm that if he hadn’t done anything since then? Is there any easy way? Is that what replay review is for?

Zack Wheeler – 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 hits, zero walks, 6 Ks, ERA at 2.72. Legit too lazy to make this argument, but will try! He’s allowed 21 ER in three games. Only 45 ER in all games. So, 21 ER in 13 1/3 IP, and 24 ER in 135 1/3 IP (1.60 ERA). That has to be some kind of record. What kind of record? I don’t know exactly. But some kind!

Weston Wilson – 4-for-5, 3 runs and his 3rd homer as he hit for the cycle. Shhh…listen very closely and we can hear the one Weston Wilson fantasy owner in all of the country. Hear him? He’s woo-hoo’ing. It’s very faint.

Keibert Ruiz – 2-for-4 and his 10th and 11th homer, hitting .227. Hey, that’s Marla Gibbs’s house!

Mitchell Parker – 3 IP, 9 ER, ERA at 4.44. Mitch got pitch-slapped. No he didn’t. Member that glossary term? It’s like when you go to the dictionary and you see “arcane, no longer used.” It was when a pitcher gave up a homer to another pitcher. They don’t hit anymore. Though, I guess Ohtani is pitch slapping everyone.

Logan Webb – 7 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 3.17. Yesterday, we learned Pepiot was bitten by a spider and today it’s Webb’s day to shine. Also, Mitchell Peter Parker pitches? Where’s A. Molina on the Jays, dressed as Doc Ock? Chad Green Goblin? [doorbell rings] Hello? A cease and desist from Marvel? Oh. Okay.

Tyler Fitzgerald – 1-for-4, 1 RBI and his 13th and 14th steals. Fitz is gonna go 20/20 in three months. The ol’ 40/40 pace. [taking 17 years and building a new Taj Mahal, but for Fitzgerald only this Taj is cinderblocks spelling the words “I Love You”]

Grant McCray – 2-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. Fun fact! Fitzgerald/McCray is Major Dad.

Casey Schmitt – 3-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 5th homer. Wasn’t that long ago he was considered an exciting prospect. To use poker terminology, he was the nut flush. Wait, I might be thinking of something else with Casey.

Max Fried – 5 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 8 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.62. I have no doubt that the Braves know Fried is not right, and he knows he’s not right, but they gave him the option to shut it down and have surgery or shut it down and return at 75%, and who wants to shut it down? I think this is what happens when the doctor says something like, “You will not cause further damage if you rest and throw again in a few weeks or months. Feel free to grab a lollipop on the way out.”

Jose Quintana – 4 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 4.26. Streamonator doesn’t like his next one, and I don’t either after yesterday’s start.

Mark Vientos – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs with his 18th and 19th homer. I’m obsessed with how good he’s been and no one is talking about it. What’s that, do I actively read anyone else’s work to see if they’re talking about Mark Vientos? Well, no, I try to avoid others’ work to not get influenced. With that said, no one is talking about this guy! He has 18 HRs in 73 games. Conservatively, that pace is 35 HRs and .270. At 3rd base. Where are we thinking next year? Because wherever he’s drafted it’s likely too late. Him or Austin Riley? Clearly Austin Riley right? On the Player Rater, Vientos is 10th best for $/Game; Riley is 22nd. Top 3B by $/Game of guys who have significant enough at-bats: Jose Ramirez, Royce Lewis, Elly, Gunnar, Devers, Rengifo, then Vientos. Some big names he’s better than: Jazz, Machado, Bohm, aforementioned Riley and Bregman. It’s time we put some respect on Vientos’s name. Vientos: The Freshmaker.

JJ Bleday – 3-for-5,2 runs, 4 RBIs and a slam (15) and legs (1), and 2nd homer in a week. Won’t be in this afternoon’s Buy column, but might be schmotato.

Mitch Spence – 2 2/3 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 4.64. It’s interesting how there’s so many Tanners in the majors now, when that name didn’t appear in any baseball database until five years ago. 25 years ago, people were all about naming their kids Tanner, because their parents were into Full House, clearly. What I can’t understand is why there’s so many Mitches who were born roughly 25 years ago. Was it the radio edit of Dr. Dre songs?

10-team roto. I’m trying to improve my offensive stats, and also my ERA. I have an innings surplus so I’ve been replacing some starters with closers. (Saves are still a tight category, though). Is Holmes a hold? Do we think the Yankees stick with him, and that he rights the ship? Otherwise the roster spot would be more useful for streaming hitter matchups.

Got an offer for Jared Jones for my TFitzy? T Fitz’s range of future outcomes feels so wide. Could completely suck or be a 25/50 guy. What would you do?

Hi Grey,

My regular OF is Profar, Duran and Rooker

As back up like Rooker pregnancy or Duran’s suspension, (Is this a full moon). I picked up Cowser and Wilyer Abreu.

1. Would you drop either to pick up David Peralta or hold?

2. I am glad that I read your column and Eugenio Suarez . besides Suarez, I have Josh Jung. Would you still hold unto Jung?

Have a great weekend!!

Happy Friday to you and all of the Razz crew.

First off, I have to tell you. I recently traded for Buxton and as annoying as that is, I still think your blurb on him today about Cals record was hilarious. Thank you once again for making my day. You are the Aaron Judge of humor in fantasy baseball.

In my 14 team mixed auction keeper league, standard cats. I am currently in 2nd ( thanks , in large part, to you, Rudy, your other writers and many of your commenters . )
However, the fight to hold off teams that are up my ass in the standings will not be easy.

I not only own glass Buxton, but also Jazz Chisholm, Joe Ryan, and Grayson Rodriguez.
Before the MLB trade deadline my closers were Tanner Scott and Doval. My current closers ( ? ) are Faucher and Hudson. I still own Doval also but of course, he is on my bench.

I have been lucky enough in the past month or so with some waiver wire pick ups that have panned out, like Xavier Edwards, Austin Wells, Robles and Lux . I need to stay lucky with pick ups. It is hard to do because we don’t have Faab but instead do the reverse order of standings each Sunday for pick ups, so I miss out on all of the flavors of the week each week. Like Tyler Fitz for example. I need to be mistake free and diligent on my FA selections in the home Strech or I will probably free fall.

Anyways, sorry for rambling on. I am off work today and just visited my favorite dispensary and sampled the goods before I started typing. should’ve done the post first.

My questions are

A. Please give me your top 3 out of this group ROS. Chapparo, Noel , Bride, IKF, Moniak, Perdomo, France, Kepler, Oswaldo Cabrera.

B. Please give me your top 2 out of these guys. Z. Littel, B. Frances, M. Perez, N. Martinez, Zebby Matthews, Clarke Schmidt.

C. of course there never is a C.

D. Please pick one of these guys for saves ROS. J. Foley, T. Holton, S. Dominguez, Y. Cano, T. Kinley, Chapman, Puk.

E. Are any of these available relievers more valuable than the 3 I have?

F. Have you heard anything about how Doval has fared so far in the minors? You think he comes back soon?

G. Same question on Jazz. Your thoughts on when/if he returns? reports on this have been all over the place.

As always, thanks in advance for your info and constant entertainment. Hope your weekend is happy , healthy and injury free.

UTL: Langford
BN: Luis Robert

SP: Webb, Peralta, G. Cole, Bassitt, Keller, Kikuchi, Flaherty, Lodolo, Ray, Morton, Pepiot

thanks for the assist. Not sure I can afford to cur Bednar as this league (for some reason) hoards closers.

So I’m light on saves as it is & while he hasn’t been that good as of late, not sure I wanna cur bait on Bassit just yet.

Good call on Garcia. I honestly overlooked him inmy lineup since he’s been one of my better hitters over the past couple weeks (albeit some empty stats the last 7 days).

I just claimed Luis Robert off waivers & I assume you’d hold him over Garcia (for now), right?

Shockingly Turang is available in 2 of my leagues!

Other one (6×6 OBP) – you taking Turang or Caminero?

Team owner in dynasty messages league I want to win now! Moving hurt guys! I need CF and SP. 18 teamer so everything is pretty sparse on WW.

It works out to me offering Vierling for BLowe and he says he sucks and would drop after season. Uh, dynasty, why? No one on WW is better.

He comes back Burnes for Ryan. Sir, he is hurt and Burnes is better. Burnes + Vierling for Ryan + Jazz I counter. No no no. His counter is Burnes + Doyle + Paredes (or Mayo, who is a “nice piece but clearly cant hit”) for Ryan + Jazz because Jazz can play 3B.

Sir, WHAT? How have you asked for MORE when you have the two hurt guys? Id rather have Burnes + Doyle straight up even when healthy.

Worst part is that this isnt a “see if he bites” type offer, he sends these long justifications on why your guys suck. Where he gets his rankings I dont know. Langford was equal to Bradfield Jr per him.

6th year dynasty and just cant figure out how this dude is top 1/3 of league.

Sir, you trade me Skubal for Cortes. You want a guy on winning team. Winning is infectious. Losers lose. You want winners on your roster because you a winner. Skubal also sounds kinda like screwball and those explode your arm. Look at Cortes splits. If you play him at home, or at night, he is nasty. A home night game is like a cheat code! Finally young guys breakdown at end of year. You want a vet at this time. Look I will sweeten the deal with Sweeney. Yeah I just got him off waivers but you got Skubal off them 5 years ago! Same deal! Plus, Nasty Nestor and sweet Sweeney! Sour Patch Kids! Like a fairy tale! I am not saying you are dumb, but it would be stupid to turn this down! You would regret it! Dont you want to win?

Hi Grey.

A. Could rank these in a WQS?
Taj – ros schedule hard
Wacha – ros schedule decent
Heaney – ros schedule easy

B. Do you think they will be limiting innings on Lugo soon? He’s at career max now. If so, is he worth a drop? His schedule is pretty tough.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Handful of SP questions – 11-team, 5×5 redraft league with weekly lineups:

1) Please rank the following 2-start options:
Gil: vCLE and vCOl (very crappy lately)
Assad: vDET and @MIA (pitching well and good matchups, but limited innings – 4/start)
DJ Herz: vCOL and @ATL (love the name, hate the game)
MPerez: vMIN and vNYM (pitching well lately, but I don’t think I can do it)

2) Please rank the following guys going against the Suckies (on the road) or with Shite Sox:
P Corbin
M Parker
K Montero

Even with these matchups, are any of these guys startable in 11-teamer?

Thank you.

My liege –

The writing has been stellar lately! The Buxton blurb: minimalist perfection. Philip Glass would be proud!

We punted average for me two weeks back. Need HR/SB with modest shading toward the bags. Xander providing R/AVG but not much else. Worth a drop for any of India, B. Lowe, Merrifield, Semian (I dropped previously), J. Pena?

My OF: Soler, Carpenter, McCarthy, Arozarena (Buxton & Edman on the IL). Drops for any of Friedl, Pederson, Mullins, Riley Greene (I could swap directly to IL for Buxton/Edman)?

Nolan Jones has now played 12 games on his latest rehab assignment in AAA which began on July 30th, putting up a line of .366 / .490 / .805 / 1.295 with 4 HRs, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 14 RBI, 9 walks and 15 runs scored in 41 at bats.

It’s a good thing Bud Black prefers to play stiffs like Sam Hilliard and Jake Cave on the Rockies over Nolan Jones who, from what I read, is out of minor league options and will need to be activated at the MLB level soon or DFA’d.

Nolan Jones is clearly healthy and hitting well in AAA, call him up FFS. How is it possible that the Rockies can be so stupid each and every season?

Yeah, Wheeler has had a strange (great, weird?) season. You basically said it, but in 19 of his 24 starts he’s given up only 17er. 17!!!

In his other 5 starts, he’s given up 28. But he can be forgiven as his worst three starts came against the powerhouses: Yankees, Orioles, and Marl… (never mind)

So correcting your blurb a bit…. yeah his worst three starts 21er in 13.1IP but only 24er in the other 135.1IP!!!! That’s a 1.60 era in 21 of his 24 starts this season.

Second try to post….

Great/funny stuff today! I especially enjoyed the dr Dre line.

Follow up to a question a couple days ago. Daily dynasty pts league. I asked if I should trade a combo of jasson Dominguez, Jordan walker and Andrew painter for Woo. You said to hold. I did.

Since then, Keller, who is on the same day as Woo, got spanked. That seems like a pattern I haven’t figured out yet. One spanking every two good outings? There’s something there. Woo through another gem. And…he’s now offered both Woo and Verlander for walker and painter. Still hold? Try to change the combo?

I really don’t want to lose painter, but I have a lot of pitching. I also have jrod for CF and Tatis and acuna in RF. But who knows what’s going on with Tatis.

Hey Grey!

As always, thanks for the write-up. In the quarters of the playoffs and got a couple of questions.

  1. still got m. Boyd in an IL slot. Do I drop him with the following rotation in hand: Wheeler, Flaherty, Peralta, Gausman, H. Brown, E. Rodriguez?
  2. NSVH is a cat, do I drop e. Rodriguez for B. Hudson. Other RP are Abreu, Suarez, Phillips, Adam, and Martinez?
  3. starting Freddy v. CLE tomorrow?

thanks!

Maybe Yelich will be fixed after getting spinal surgery. He’s been fighting it for years.

Depends what he has going on and it’s a bit annoying they aren’t giving us details.. If he is getting a Tiger Woods metal box placed in his spine, then the future is not exactly bright. If he is just getting a disc shaved down that was irritating a nerve, he should be good. I went from not being able to use my right calf which was paralyzed, to running 50 marathons after spinal surgery for a ruptured disc. So there’s hope!

Grey!!!

Awesome!!

a. In my roto dynasty (50-man, 15-MiLB), so deep benches. Pepiot returning from the IL. Who is my worst pitcher from a dynasty/roto perspective? I need to drop one to activate him. [Quick aside: someone dropped Pepiot after he was IL’d with the spider bite!! Pepiot went from the WW to my best SP.]

SP Schwellenbach, Bibee, Lodolo, Abbott, Crawford, Flaherty, Bradford
RP Yates, Suarez, Joyce, Finnegan, Fairbanks, ADiaz, Justin Martinez, Troy Taylor

I’m leaning Bradford but he’s just 26 and could be great next year.

With this crap pitching, I am 3rd. 4th in W, 3rd in ERA, 4th in WHIP, 5th in K/9, 2nd in SVH

b. Have a nice weekend.

c. Special Norm MacDonald (RIP) quote of the day for August 16, 2024

In an act of reconciliation, China released 8 political prisoners this week but the remaining 79.6 million will remain locked up.

d. Chris Rock quote of the day for August 16, 2024

With all the mass-shooters not having a home to protect, here’s an idea for a gun law. In order to get a gun license, you have to have a mortgage.

i too got Willie Castro for speed and none this year Really.

Interesting though, he seemed to be a .260 hitter with an above average obp type hitter. Not a complete waste…. Who will not hurt you anywhere.

OK, I’ll try again. You kind of sabotaged your own point in the Wheeler blurb with bad math: He’s allowed 21 ER in three games. Only 45 ER in all games. So, 21 ER in 13 1/3 IP, and 32 ER in the other 135 1/3 IP.

21 + 32 ? 45.

So actually 24 ER in 135 1/3 IP (1.60 ERA).
