The code I cracked? Not the Da Vinci Code or The Code, a movie I think I saw that I can’t remember seeing or who was in it and Google no longer works. This time, I cracked the NFBC code by drafting the best team I’ve ever drafted in forever. Forever, forever ever? Forever ever? Forever never seems that long until you’re grown and drafting from your home. The best team ever. Usually, I leave these drafts with a mixture of regret and meh. A rueful meh. Mehful. Not this time. This time I managed to draft a team I really like, which confirms to me how awful this team is going to be. Oh, it’s gonna be big awful because I love it. All right, get ready to feast your peepers! For those unfamiliar, it’s a 50-round draft and hold, so no waivers. It’s 15-team, two catchers and weekly for pitchers, and bi-weekly for hitters. Anyway, here’s my Draft Champions draft recap:

PSYCHE! The first week’s Buy/Sell is already available for Patreon members. It will be released all year early for Patreons, so if people are getting a jump on you, it’s because they paid the $10. Anyway, the draft recap:

OH MY GOD, YOU GOT TOMMY TROY!!!

Are you being sarcastic?

YES. OKAY, YOU’RE DYING TO DO IT SO DO IT.

You’re right, I am. Here’s my War Room totals:

HMM, IT SEEMS LIKE IT DOES WELL ON THE WAR ROOM, BUT ISN’T BASEBALL PLAYED ON A FIELD NOT IN A WAR ROOM.

I see what you’re doing, but you can’t knock the enthusiasm out of me.

I WILL TRY! YOUR PITCHING IS BORING WITH LITTLE UPSIDE.

Who needs upside? Not this guy with two thumbs pointing directly at himself! I wouldn’t write a Nathan Eovaldi sleeper, because he’s boring, this is true. If valuable is boring! Why is Nathan Eovaldi always so underrated? Serious question. Drafted before him was Tyler Glasnow — can’t throw more than 120 IP — Trey Yesavage — has never thrown 120 IP in the majors. Actually, hasn’t thrown 20 IP — Emmet Sheehan — has thrown 133 2/3 IP, in his career — Cam Schlittler — has 73 career IP. Okay, you get the idea. I love these guys (except Glasnow). I am in on them. I wrote an Emmet Sheehan sleeper. Eovaldi is in front of all these guys. Eovaldi threw 130 IP last year, and was 42nd overall on the Player Rater. Eovaldi hasn’t had an ERA over 4.00 since 2019 when he was in Fenway. He pitches in the best pitchers’ park in Texas and is one of the safest pitchers.

IF EOVALDI WASN’T BORING ENOUGH, YOU DECIDED TO FOLLOW THAT WITH RANGER SUAREZ AND JOE MUSGROVE, HUH? YOUR PITCHING REMINDS OF THAT TIME I WATCHED A POT OF WATER BOIL. BOY, WAS THAT EXCITING.

Even though Hunter Brown is one of the best starters and coming off a season that was excellent, he has upside. He could supplant Skubal and Skenes as the top pitchers in baseball. Insane thought? Well, Crochet was the top pitcher last year so Skubal and Skenes never were. Casey Mize’s Ks went up 5% and 6.9 K/9 to 8.4. Mean’swhile, his walks dropped from 2.6 BB/9 to 2.2. He is headed into his first full season after his breakout and was considered a top prospect. Impossible to say how long it takes to break out for a pitcher, but Mize about to make me smize.

WAS THAT AN AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL REFERENCE?

Yeah, good, right?

OPPOSITE OF THAT WAS WHAT I WAS THINKING. ALL RIGHT, HOW ABOUT YOUR HITTING. LOOKS GOOD…[SCANNING DOWN] HOLD UP! YOU SAID YOU DIDN’T WANT ANDY PAGES THIS YEAR?! YOU FARKIN FREAKIN LIAR!

All right, here’s how that went down. This is what I was looking at in the War Room at that exact moment:

I just drafted Eovaldi so no pitchers, and needed an outfielder, so it was between Butler, Nimmo and Pages. At that point, I was on tilt for steals, so I was leaning Pages or Butler. The War Room told me Pages was the best selection for across the board stats and I had built a five-category team to that point. Plus, he had a small edge in steals to Nimmo. At pick 141, it says I would have a 20% of getting Pages and, lo and behold, he was there, so it also felt like I was getting a bargain. His ADP was 128.7 and I was at 141. I really needed steals, though, so I was leaning Butler, but the War Room told me I would have a 35% chance of him being there for my 11th round pick at pick 160, and even a 7% chance at pick 171. So, I went Pages, then crossed my fingers Butler would make it back, and he did. I could go through every draft pick like this.

PLEASE DON’T.

Maybe one more.

UGH.

I needed an MI and I needed power. I was at pick 280 and in round 19. I was met by this:

At that point, ADP didn’t really come into play. I just wanted a regular (so looked at PA) and I wanted the most power. Quickly scanning down, you see Nolan Gorman has the best power of the available options and also the most plate appearances. If being honest, Colt Keith and Brooks Lee were interesting. Neither had power I wanted, but Lee’s position eligibility was attractive and Colt Keith’s average was enticing. I was intrigued, y’all! Ended up taking a negative in average and went NoGo.

THIS WAS MORE THAN I EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR DRAFTING.

Come on, it was kinda interesting.

NO.

I can’t lose this league and that bothers you.

HERE’S WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR TEAM:

Hi Mr. Grey,
I waited way too late to draft a 3rd basemen. I got stuck with Paredes in the 19th round. He was terrible last year and I only selected him because of his ADP at that point.

Do I keep him? Drop him for:
Bohm
Jordan Westburg
Ernie Clement
Miguel Vargas
Marcelo Mayer
Colt Keith
Mark Vientos
Brooks Lee

Or do I throw caution to the wind and pick up Karros, which my itchy gut is hankering for?

Thanks! Have a great season!

Ok, league #2 for me here. 10 team 5×5 roto w/ OBP, 6 keepers. I went all in and won last year (yay!) but that meant I did not have picks in 12th, 14th, 20th, or 22nd, and then extras in 25th+. Plus I had the 9th pick so entire closer runs went between my picks. thoughts?

I was excited about Ponce after his year in Korea. His spring ratios are great, but averaging the same K/9 as he did his last stint in MLB with increased velo. He also hasn’t faced a teams best hitters when he has pitched. I knew his K/9 from Korea wouldn’t translate, but expected better K rates with the increased velo and repertoire. What are your thoughts on him after the spring results? Early or Ponce?

By the way, I used your SP rankings as my guide again, specifically the “Bon Varyage” and “Getting fitted for a Tuxedo shirt” sections.

I couldn’t believe how successful that strategy has been over the past few years. I cleaned up with pitchers in your rankings from 8 (Gilbert) to 46 (Boyd). Thank you again. Hopefully, it works out like it has the past few years.

HI Grey,

I noticed that over the last two days that three pitchers have gone five innings with giving up only one hit and striking out five:

Matthew Liberatore
Luis Gil (sent to minors)
Zac Elfin

When Rodon goes on the IL list, would you pick up of any of the above three SPs,Jacob Lopez, Casey Mize, Cade Cavalli or a hitter and who to drop from the following?

Logan Gilbert
Jacob deGrom
Framber Valdez
Cam Schlitter
MacKenzie Gore
Tatduya Imai
Shane Baz
Grant Holmes
Mich Abel
Cody Ponce
Will Warren
Carlos Rodon DTD

Keep 10 players, 7×5 H2H 10 team. Just finished the draft and here is my team:

2B – McLain

Was offered George Kirby and Mason Miller for Caglianone and Bubba Chandler.

Should I take that? I really believe in Cags long term but that package fits my current team well.

Thanks!

I read your about post about Delauter last year. He seems like a decent add while he is healthy since I have room. Not sure if he has ever been this healthy to start a season. The other option is benge. This is an obp league though. I thought Delauter would have the better obp but the he seems to have Royce Lewis syndrome. What do you think?

10 team 5×5 daily transaction league where nearly all teams roster 10-11 starting pitchers and rotate them through the 4 or 5 available active slots while keeping 4 closers active. 30 man rosters along with a (rapidly growing already) discard pile (for players like, ahem, D Crews who I drafted but then replaced with J Beck) so around 350 to 400 players in the pool by the end of May or so. JJ I don’t know Whether-he’ll-holt up all season in the leadoff spot

But I have no place to put him with Elly, Keaschall, Albies and Yelich in my SS, 2B, MI and U slots. Offer him up for someone like McClanahanahan (I need SP with Pepiot down and Lodolo questionable)? 10-team ESPN h2h categories league Any moves you’d recommend making?

(Adding Shane Mclanahan or Tatsuya Imai are probably the most tempting moves at the moment but I’m not sure, my rotation is very high risk high upside. I also like Lile and Wetherholt, but the league is probably too shallow, I wanted to do 12team or 4-5 outfielders)

2b- Ozzie Albies
3b- Manny Machado

Bench-Kazuma Okamoto

Sp- Bryan Woo, Nolan McLean, Bubba Chandler, Mackenzie Gore, Chase Burns, Jacob Misiorowski

I have one waiver pickup I can do without dropping anyone since moving Pepiot to IL

Solid Available players:
Hitters- JJ wetherholt, Carson Benge, Kevin Mcgonigle, Alec Burleson, Marcus Semien, Daylen Lile, Jonathan Aranda, Kyle Manzardo, Dylan Crews, Royce Lewis

Pitchers- Tatsuya Imai, Andrew Painter, Shane Mclanahan, Roki Sasaki, Cade Horton, Edward Cabrera, Kris Bubic, Jack Flaherty, Clay Holmes, Tyler Rogers, Will Vest, Adrian Morejon, Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval, Matt Brash, Matt Strahm

I meant to ask this yesterday. I drafted Dylan Crews before he was sent down.
I have one NA spot to use for a prospect. Is he worth the stash or should I take the L and try a prospect who is liekly to be called up (eldridge or others who were not drafted). From what I read Crews was sent down because he refuses to make adjustments. Thanks

Last roster spot…who do I fill it with Josh Lowe or Bryce Matthews….12 team dynasty 5×5…your pitching staff looks solid! Kind of like your high school sweet heart, dependable, supportive compared to the sexy bombshell that’s gonna run out on you…like Kenny Rogers Lucille…

ESPN, 5 x 5, 12 team, head to head league.
We have 6 player benches and 2 IL slots.
Currently have DeLauter, Matt Shaw, Ryne Nelson, Senga, McClanahan, Leiter on my bench.
Looks like Connelly Early has secured a rotation spot for the Bo-Sox. You like him over Matt Shaw (or another of my bench players)?
Thanks

Robert Jr a good bench bat or just a constant source of frustration? I am deciding between him or some of the young guys like DeLauter, Benge, Lawlar…

I’ve got 1 roster spot to fill for a hitter; 1 for a pitcher. I believe I’m pretty well rounded for positions/stats at the moment. Who would you be most interested in of these players that are on the wire? 12 team league H2H.

Hitters:
Luis Garcia
Xander Bogaerts
Marcell Ozuna
Dom Canzone
Miguel Vargas
Evan Carter
Coby Mayo

SPs
Bryce Miller
Parker Messick
Jacob Lopez
Justin Steele
Jeffrey Springs

The answer is all those young guys are shiny new Ferraris, and Nathan Eovaldi is llke Gus Fring’s Volvo. I love Schlittler but when it came time to pick my last keeper I went with Corey Seager over him. In hindsight I probably would have cut Riley Greene loose, because as it turned out, other teams kept way more SP’s this year than past years. it’s a H2H league where wins are 10 pts. Lot of OF’s were available. .

The annual “how’s my team, Grey?” post (part 1)

This one is 12 team H2H / OBP & QS / 8 keepers + 1 minor leaguer (*)

C William Contreras *
1B Vinnie P *
2B Marte *
SS Abrams *
3B Okamoto
OF Adell *
OF Pages
OF Laureano
Util Ohtani *

Bench: Burleson, Mayo, L Garcia, Crawford *, DeLauter, Montgomery
Minors; Emerson

SP1: Sale *
SP2: Luzardo *
SP3: Pivetta
SP4: Boyd
SP5: Sheehan
RP1: Smith
RP2: Palencia

Bench: Leiter, Flaherty, Mahle, Abel
IL: Cole

Made the finals as an 8 seed last year and came one category away from winning the league.

I’m hopeful one (or both) of Crawford & DeLauter end up making the OF more of a strength. SP feels like it will be a problem, but hopefully decent enough to patch over with shrewd waiver wire pickups.

Thanks…sigh of relief on the pitching side. Hopeful Crawford makes good on his promise of speed and Ohtani can paper over some of the lack of power, but I get your point…its a work in progress.

Leiter looks really good today in spring training action…he’ll probably be top 5 before April is out!

you’re probably gonna cackle at me at how unhinged this was but i did a thing you advise never to do and thought you’d get a kick out of it

League is a small 8 teamer with me and my buddies. Just for fun and bragging rights. I’m the most decorated over the decade we’ve been doing it with 4 Golds, a silver and 2 bronze. On the podium 7 out of 10 years.

Snake, with OPS, QS, and K/9 instead of the usual, so a bit of a different beast

I was 10th and when it got to me both Skubal and Skenes were still on the board. I took them both and immediately was like “grey would kill me lmfao”

My team ended up like this:

C – Baldwin (20)
1B – Kurtz (3)
2B – Marte (5)
3B – Suarez (6)
SS – Adames (7)
OF – Schwarber (4)
OF – Merrill (9)
OF – Cruz (10)
UTIL – Busch (11)
UTIL – M Garcia (12)

SP – Skubal (1)
SP – Skenes (2)
SP – Burns (13)
SP – Sheehan (16)
RP – Miller (8)
RP – Smith (17)
RP – J Estrada (19)
RP – T Megill (21)

BN – Bregman (14)
BN – Abrams (15)
BN – Keaschall (18)

Hey Grey! Baseball is back…almost. Looking forward to reading your daily notes again this season.

Quick question. I drafted Basallo in one of the last rounds as my catcher. Now Yainer Diaz is available to pick up as a free agent (it’s a 10-team league, one catcher). Should I stick with a young catcher with upside or go with the more tested Diaz for consistency?

Thanks!

Morning Grey!

Wondering if you can share your thoughts on my team. 12 team, head to head league in Yahoo with OPS as a counting stat instead of AVG. My plan is to cycle out starters while having the RPs always in my starting lineup.

Once I finished the draft…I was with MR. A. CAPS as a YIKES! because the war room has me struggling with:

HR-22.9
SB-21.2
Wins – 6.3
Ks – 12.4

C- A. Ramirez
1B – J. Naylor
2B- M. Garcia
3B- A. Bregman
SS-T. Turner
OF-Judge, Y. Alvarez, D. Lile
Util – S. Kwan, C. Correa

SP –
J. Ryan
K. Bradish
B. Woodruff
D. Rasmussen
E. Cabrera

RP-
A. Chapman
D. Santana
R. Iglesias
A. Uribe

Bench –
A. Bohm,
M. Ozuna
L. Henderson
R. Weathers

Thoughts on the roster?
I plan on dropping L. Henderson…who is the best option?: B. Ober, B. Ashcroft, M. Meyer, Jacob Smith, or D. Fuentes.

Thanks!

50 rounds, wow your prostate must have gotten a workout! Like the team, if a few of those SP step up could be golden! Love how you punt C every year even in 2 C leagues and end up getting production

Hey I have a “NA” spot who is the redraft add?

What draft position were you drafting from? Guessing you were on 12-13 range.
Great squad, very balanced by going 3,4,8 ,9 with pitching , but it was the quality of the the hurlers. Assuming you had some tough choices at pitching in those spots, do you always lean War Room/rankings with the pick, or do you sometimes say “I don’t have a share of this guy yet”. Because they are all in a tier, so projections are close, do you ever just bail on best ranked, and dip down to get a guy you really like to have on your team?

I think you could’ve gone Willi Castro in the 19th and gotten Gorman in the 20th. Gorman is going late everywhere it seems, and Willi gives you ton of position flexibility and Coors.

Gorman was a late $1 pickup in my NL only auction keeper, as an anecdotal reference. And he was pick 316 in my Razzslam points league (which felt early).

Your rankings steered me to Castro in that same NL auction!

Kinda punted 3B but it’ll work out.

I am extremely happy with my team. We had guys taking guys I couldn’t believe where they were going.

One of my best drafts IMO.
Thank you!!
