Ketel Marte didn’t show up to Fenway Park on Monday, and, honestly, good for him. Mondays stink. As someone who went to school in Boston and went AWOL from freshman through junior year, due to, uh, one Ketel, been there, man. (Okay, in fairness, we put Popov vodka in a bottle of Ketel to try to impress girls.) Ketel, check out Faneuil Hall. Go see the Charles riding on a giant duck. Newbury to Cambridge, it’s lovely this time of year. Maybe a tad humid. Get a cannoli in the North End with Ben Affleck. So, DBacks put him on the restricted list, which means there’s some serious stuff going on with him that I should not be joking about and I’m going to look terrible in retrospect, and this is going to get dated so fast, or, as I imagine, he just hates the DBacks, as he has for the whole year, didn’t show up to the game and will happily to be on another team in a week. Ketel Marte about to reappear as the Dodgers’ nine-hole hitter. I’m kidding (I think.) Until then, go get a cone at JP Lick’s and chill! Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Justin Martinez – Activated from the IL. He hasn’t worked in back-to-back games, but he could get occasional saves. Inside that ‘could’ is the whole universe. It’s like the marbles the aliens are playing with that have the universe inside them. Only one whole marble is that ‘could.’ Martinez threw four innings in his rehab, which I find humorous when I think about Josh Hader being in a rehab for months, and Martinez had Tommy John surgery. DBacks must be like, “Meh, who cares, let’s see him rehab in the majors.”

Jordan Lawlar – 0-for-4 as he was activated from the IL. Due to his proclivity for injury, Diamondbacks’ insurance premiums just went up. (Or maybe because they just lost their 2nd baseman in a mall.) Lawlar’s interesting to monocle, I guess, but it has to be a pretty deep league where I’m just randomly picking him up without seeing anything first.

Willson Contreras – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 25th homer. I have good news to report, Chad Tracy finally figured out Adley is not a three-hole hitter. It’s wild how little MLB managers know about players who are not on their team. I feel like it’s my NL-Only leaguemates when I mention someone in the AL. They’re like, “Lawrence Butler, is that the name of the bulldog mascot?”

Elly De La Cruz – 2-for-8, 1 run, 1 RBI with 5 Ks in the doubleheader. E!’s 2nd half stats are like the photo in Back to the Future that starts fading when George and Lorraine don’t meet and it starts disappearing and won’t someone please play E!’s cousin, Marvin Berry, the song Seven Nation Army or something to get E! going for the 2nd half?

Dane Myers – 3-for-5 and his 4th and 5th homer. I grabbed him off waivers for a batty call, and I’m starting to think I should give fantasy baseball advice!

Ivan Herrera – 1-for-6, 1 run and his 14th homer. I want to acknowledge that I watched the better part of both games (okay, like five innings, maybe), and I’m not sure if I ever saw two teams with less interesting starters. Andre Pallante (6 IP, 4 ER, 11 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.57) is lucky to have not allowed 7 ER, and Rhett Lowder (6 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 10 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 5.17) looked worse.

Quinn Mathews – 4 IP, 1 ER, ERA at 3.00. He had a 5.6 BB/9 in the minors. He has a 6 BB/9 in the majors.

Starling Marte – Designated for assignment. His assignment is to discover time travel.

Maikel Garcia – 2-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI as he was activated from the IL. More thoughts on him below in the Vinnie Pasketti blurb.

Vinnie Pasquantino – 1-for-4 as he was activated from the IL. Royals are getting back a lot of guys who are “Exciting if you had a head injury in March and haven’t been able to put thoughts together since.” Could Maikel and Vinnie be good? Of course. Will they? Well, it hasn’t been a banner year.

Bobby Witt Jr. – 3-for-4, 4 runs, 3 RBIs and a slam (15) and legs (33), and 2nd homer in two games. Please get hot, I need to feels the joys de Witt in the dog days of Suzanne Somers.

Jeff McNeil – 1-for-4 and his 6th homer. I saw him high up on the 7-day Player Rater and I thought to myself, “Have some dignity and don’t think about picking him up.” Stupid dignity. Is that a sin?

Tommy White – 1-for-3 and his 2nd homer, 2nd homer in two games, and hot schmotato, for sure, but I also like Tommy The White. Solid hit tool, and Bing Bong for the ding dongs (next week).

Edward Cabrera – Hit the IL with “take your pick.” He will return from his made-up injury to the pen.

Seiya Suzuki – 1-for-4, 2 runs and his 22nd homer. Seiya ball!

Pete Crow-Armstrong – 4-for-5, 3 RBIs and a double slam (30) and legs (31), hitting .281, becoming the 1st Cubs player to have consecutive 30/30 seasons. It’s fun to be a fan of PCA, because I no longer have to come up with excuses why I don’t like him.

Max Muncy – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 25th homer, 2nd in two games. Max is the Munciest!

Shohei Ohtani – 4-for-5, 4 runs, 3 RBIs and his 28th and 29th homer. He’s stat-padding in Coors? Cool, stat-pad!

Edwin Diaz – 1 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 11.85. If I had Edwin Diaz in a league, I’d be at the point where I wouldn’t want him brought in.

Blake Snell – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.60. Unlike Diaz, Snell returned without missing a beat. Prolly because he wasn’t actually injured and the Dodgers concocted some nonsense for him.

Luis Castillo – 4 2/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 4.99. Did he pitch well last week just to stick a banana in our tailpipe this week?

Oneil Cruz – Activated from the IL, and didn’t play, which is hilarious. No notes. Just perfect managing by LL Donkey.

Framber Valdez – 5 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 9 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 4.35. He’s doing this to me. I’m so sorry if you got involved. He hates me and is being petulant.

Kevin McGonigle – 2-for-6, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 13th homer. I like McGonigle so take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt: His real world value is higher than fantasy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s over-drafted next year.

Max Fried – Hit the IL with an elbow bone bruise, and Carlos Rodon will be taking his spot in the rotation. There’s a concern that Fried might be, well, fried.

Cristopher Sanchez – 6 IP, 1 ER, 11 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 2.51. Looking at the box score and seeing the Marlins’ pitchers were Junk/King, and all I can think is how Frank from American Pickers died and they just kept rolling, producing the show with a new guy teamed up with Mike. If I croak out and MarmosDad starts doing the roundups, at least take a beat and ask what happened to me.

Brian Navarreto – 2-for-4 and his 1st homer. Also, big time looking forward to Navarreto’s upcoming film, Digger with Tom Cruise.

Martin Perez – 5 IP, 4 ER, 11 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.15. What kind of sadistic freak pitches well for four months until I pick him up, then pitches poorly?

Bailey Ober – 4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 4.62. Bailey Always-Take-The-Under-On-Innings.

Shane McClanahan – 3 1/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 3.25 as he was activated from the IL. Kevin Cash said that McClanahan will be eased back, and I say, “Guy who averaged, like, 4 1/3 IP a start is being eased even more? Oh, great.”

Ryan Vilade – 1-for-3 and his 11th homer, and 2nd homer in two games, Hot schmotato, sure, but he’s also in a pretty nasty platoon, being treated with the LLAMAS.

Yandy Diaz – 2-for-3, 2 runs and his 18th homer. Muscled that one out. Literally. Al Brawn does that.

Coby Mayo – 2-for-5, 2 runs and his 16th homer. This homer went 468-feet and I have an idea to measure homers by vibes because this seemed to go 550 feet, so that should be its official measurement.

Pete Alonso – 2-for-5 and his 28th homer, and his 2nd homer in three games and third homer in a week, and he’s one of the top hitters since the All-Star Break. Albombso!

Christian Encarnacion-Strand – 3-for-5, 4 RBIs and his 6th homer, 2nd homer in three games and third homer in a week, and he keeps being platooned for some reason that escapes me. Not a terrible platoon that kills all his value, but it does make him in weekly leagues a little more challenging.

Brandon Young – 4 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 3.52. Streamonator says he gets the Rays again next time out, and once again I’m saying MLB really phoned-in this schedule where teams all play each other repeatedly in different cities.

Nolan McLean – 6 IP, 1 ER, 10 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.34. His underlying stats are kinda gorge and I’m impressed more so with doing it on the Mets. It’s like being a good cook, and cooking well on an airplane. Surprised this isn’t a Food Network show already. One of my biggest Boomer complaints is that the Food Network has zero cooking on it. I don’t care if you can make something out of milk, anchovies and Triscuits. Just cook! Wild thing is cooking on Youtube does so well. It’s kinda like how music videos now regularly get a billion views on YouTube and MTV doesn’t air them. Now get off my lawn!

Daniel Duarte – 1 IP, 0 ER, ERA at 0.89, and his 2nd save, but Kodai Senga had worked previously so it’s nothing, and usually I don’t even mention these but I just dropped Duarte and held Yennier Cano, who gave up 3 ER without recording an out, and I’m just venting now, ignore me!

Christopher Morel – Mets called him up (and he didn’t play). Ya know what I just realized, Morel doesn’t get enough shine for when a guy comes up, and is great then fades quickly. Missed a good opportunity to call that Pirates guy, Esmorelyn Valdez.

Appreciate your help as I tinker with my lineup focused on the playoff week beginning Aug 31. It is doubtful I move up or down in the standings until that matchup. So Riley Greene hit the Wire. I have Soto in my only IL spot. Pass on Greene or grab him in hopes of an impact in two weeks? I would have to drop Headrick my only holds guy. But another one likely will come available in late August. Hold or take a swing with Greene?

Framber Valdez – He’s doing this to me. I’m so sorry if you got involved. He hates me and is being petulant.

I drafted Framber and didn’t drop his sorry ass until July 2nd (when I added a much better pitcher in Cavalli). Like a victim of domestic abuse, I picked Framber back up for his 8/12 start. You might say he has really crossed us both up! I have since dropped him again and now he has to stay 150 feet away.

I’d let him finish out this series in Coors…then sit him for about 10 days…sometimes you have to step away

A Chicago Tribune columnist with a nugget –

“Pete Crow-Armstrong’s performance tonight — featuring 2 HRs, 2B, 1B, BB, K, SB and 3 RBIs — added 0.5 fWAR to his season total, which is wild,” Montemurro writes. “12 qualified MLB hitters have produced an fWAR less than that this season, including Kyle Tucker (0.4).”

This whole Marte thing stinks. The Dbacks did a lousy job of managing it too. They should have just said he is dealing with a personal matter earlier in the day and left it at that. No further comment.

So he apparently went back to AZ to get an MRI on his knee. Really, they dont have MRIs in Boston? Why was he put on the restricted list if hurt?

The perpetual dilemma:
on Friday we have Cameron vs Melton in KC. We, of course, need help in every pitching category. I assume we start both since the alternative is Sasaki in Atlanta or Miller home vs Cubs. Our weeks run Friday to Friday and both Miller and Sasaki are currently benched.
By the way, our hitting has really picked up in all 3 leagues thanks in a large degree to the weekly buy/sell (Cole Young, Clement, Lombard, Culpepper) as well as Olson, Jr, Jac Cags and Abreu all scorching hot.
Thanks as usual.

One of my leagues playoff started this week and I took first for the season and I have a bye. I am setting my team up for next week. I dropped Elder and picked up Clay Holmes because Clay pitches Wednesday so I assume he’ll get two starts next week. But my question is I’m rolling with one bench bat and since I lost James Wood I’ve been going with
Arozorena
Schwarber
Max Clark… now Joshua Báez.

3 OFers

I have those 2 OF and it’s working, but for playoff purposes I could use another. This is the rest of my team
C – Ramirez
1B – Sal
2B – Durbin
3B – J Ram
SS – Otto
UTIL – Lombard
UTIL – Naylor
B – Okamoto

Would you drop Okamoto for Benge? I feel like he’s a lot more valuable at this point.

I’m fine with that James Wood injury is like gigantic.

Thanks !!

Hey Grey! H2H points league, redraft, last week before playoffs. A win will qualify me (on total points), a loss ends this team’s season.

like the o.cruz one, it seems this year that’s way up, guys coming off IR to not play yet. not that it hadn’t been done ever before this year, but pretty sure it seemed like it would be maybe a 10% event before this year, now it seems like more in the 40% or higher range. possibly platooning is up more now, and the disjunct between a GM and whatever office workers push through the IR coming off/going on people with the coaches (so here the GM doesn’t check who PIT is playing day of taking off IR, coach knows and he was off since lefty anyway); but even if that’s true it shouldn’t account for this large a jump (or it seems such anyway). also many of these aren’t platoon based, just guy plays vs anybody, and is taken off IR even sometimes the night before, then doesn’t play his first game back on roster. and many of these IR’d guys aren’t fully away from the team the whole time either, it’s not like whatever player is too busy spending time getting back with his team mates he hasn’t seen at all for weeks+; many times you can spot the IR’d player hanging out for most of his IR tenure on the BN with his team mates already.

it’s more like the coaches are getting annoyed more often at GM’s suddenly taking a player away and giving back a player that had been IR’d but now isn’t, and rather than (often) just playing their best player they think “well i’ll show that GM, i had this roster already set, F him i’ll keep it set to what i did already before i learned of player x coming off IR today, nobody told me about it, i’m the damn coach over here!” so some mix of communication issues between GM’s and coaches, and/or maybe even outright tantrums being thrown by coaches, or something completely else. it’s goofy though.

maybe something came out somewhat recently in like a sports psychology journal some research showing that it’s better for players to “take it all in again” for a day while being active/healthy before actually playing; it’s surely more teams doing this than past years, and more often total instances. if not that it sure seems such.

oh it’d be completely stupid, but gotta believe some trainer who goes upstairs to coaches/GM’s with whatever theory he just read in grad school in the last say 10+ months, is more likely than just

(1) GM’s literally don’t tell coaches about when players are back
(2) GM’s aren’t even aware of how their own players get platooned and/or are too lazy to even look up matchups
(3) coaches are just throwing tantrums at GM’s in this, taking “oh GM gonna mess with my roster without telling me, i can sht on him for today anyway here my best player at x position, yr off today anyway as fallout”

there’s something else ketel was involved with prior not that long ago that almost we never hear about on players. so he’s got these 2 now:

(1) gets his house robbed while he’s out of town at all star game. always seemed odd as if you wanted to rob whoever’s house and he’s a famous baseball player, wouldn’t a long road trip be an easier time, all star break is like 4ish days total and i’m guessing some of the players don’t even arrive there till the day of that one game, so probably shorter time away from his home where ever it was that got robbed than many other seemingly better opportunities for the thieves.

(2) now he’s suddenly not telling the team he’s not showing up such that they don’t even know this till quite close to a game time. players do sometimes have to flee the team for family related whatever (grandma died in s.america etc) but it’s almost always noted by the team in advance, not like here.

not saying these 2 things have to be related, but they’re both really rare and weird. possibly bohm adjacent things.

Not that I’m some master burglar or anything but the All-Star game makes more sense than a long road trip because you would take your whole family to the All-Star game whereas a long road trip the family would stay and be living in the house still

probably right on this. more likely the whole house is empty even if that’s only for 1-4 total days vs road trip. still something really goofy going on with ketel here.

yeah that’s why i brought up bohm, family members would be the ones for sure or not IF the whole family went with him to all star game, and “family emergency” is the most likely reason why he’s suddenly F’d off the team without telling them at all (if we go by past other player examples). i’m leaning on “family causes x” being the cause of both.

Epic dueling pianos MVP battle between Shohei & PCA this past week, amazing players

I don’t know what’s dumber? – the Dodgers giving Kyle Tucker that ridiculous contract or Craig Counsell hitting MVPete 9th at the start of the year

Not sure either were “dumb”

I like Tucker as a buy-low for 2027, as much as I detest LAD. First season after signing mega deals often don’t go well. (Warning for Skubal next year)

Pete needed a shake up early in the year, when he was awful.

How do you buy low on a 4 year/$240 million contract? It’s the second highest AAV in baseball history…Friedman would gladly DFA him right now if he wasn’t on the hook

Never hit your most talented franchise player last

If that ain’t Dumb & Dumber, Lloyd Christmas & Harry Dunne were miscast

maybe but which of these is dumber

(1) a team with more money than it can spend, and no cap, overpaying somebody

(2) CUBS last year trading off it’s 1st round pick to rent the same player for 1 season.

sea pilot’s right (about the tucker part), there’s a lot of data backing up team change + large contract signing, 1st year (or at last first half year) = losing at least 15% of expected value that first season or half season (often more i’m saying at least 15%). it gets worse if it’s also AL to NL or NL to AL, not that here.

1) The Freeman deal was great business, the Tucker deal was horrendous…It’s not just allocation of resources or value to consider…The worst thing for the Dodgers is it essentially takes away their flexibility of benching or jettisoning an inefficient player

(2) I’m a Cubs fan but no homer, conceptually an incredibly dumb trade by Hoyer, made even worse when he essentially gave away Bellinger for free

There were numerous red flags on Tucker, he was awful the final 3 months in Chicago…analytics can’t justify a bad deal with the wrong player, ask the Angels about Anthony Rendon
