Saves Daddies
I’m gonna kick off this week by giving Rowan Wick some love. I thought that dude was dead in the water a few weeks ago, and here he is putting up a Top 10 RP week via the Player Rater. I mean, yeah, he closes for the Cubs, but I’ve been tooting the “closers on bad teams still get fantasy results” horn for as long as I’ve been able to walk and talk. Wick had 3 SV and 6 K in 3.1 scoreless. The Ks came with some pedestrian-ish SwStr%, so I wouldn’t go expecting many repeats of this week’s output.
Camilo Doval had a dynamite week, as clearly evidenced by his #1 rating for the week. Snagged a dub and pumped out 4 SV to boot. A 4-SV week would be delicious in and of itself, but then to tack on a win? Bonkers value. Been a pretty good year overall for the dude, but I think many drafters expect more at this point. Doval’s got 17 SV and 2.76 ERA to go along with a mediocre 1.22 WHIP. Never too encouraging to see a double-digit BB%.
Kenley Jansen was strong in some ways (3 SV, 0.00 ERA, 4 K) and not great (2 H, 4 BB) in others this week. Overall good results, and at least there’s solace in the fact that one of those walks was intentional.
Emmanuel Clase had 3 SV and 5 K in 3.1 scoreless. Week after week this guy just continues to impress. He’s simply stellar. Statcast red AF, and he’s only 24. Health permitting, I think we’re gonna be talking about this fella for a loooong time.
Liam Hendriks had 3 SV as well but did allow four baserunners and a run in 3 IP. Typically strong K% and SwStr% though, at least.
Okay sooo not terribly sure how to evaluate this one: Matt Bush had 2 SV and 8 K this week. Looking like the third freakin’ Diaz brother out there. I guess I lied; I am pretty sure how to evaluate this one. I like him in SVHD, but I’m not trusting steady saves from him.
Ian Kennedy bagged a couple saves and seems to have pulled ahead of the others in this lame Diamondbacks bullpen. He’s not exciting, but he’s a damn sight better than Mark Melancon in my book, even if Melancon had 2 SV himself this week.
Seranthony Dominguez still holding up nicely despite the addition of David Robertson. The former had 1 W and 2 SV this week, striking out five in 4 scoreless IP. For now, it’s looking like both Dominguez and Robertson are your Phillies closers.
Felix Bautista had 2 SV and 2 K in 2.1 scoreless. Chances have been fewer and farther between lately, but he’s your man in Baltimore and he’s been damn good this season. On the year, he’s sporting elite percentiles in K%, Whiff%, xBA, and xERA/xwOBA. Well, not quite elite in that last one, but 87th percentile is close enough! Point is the man is very good. Ain’t perfect, namely with barrels and walks.
Oh hey, Scott Barlow did stuff. Had 2 SV, 1 HD, and 7 K in four innings of one-run ball. No walks, either! Remember how I said closers on bad teams can still give good fantasy results? How does #7 RP on the Player Rater sound? Eh? Yeah, that’s Barlow. Didn’t cost you much on draft day.
Ryan Helsley with 2 SV and 5 K. That looks great, but then you might be put off by 5 H and 2 ER (both solo HR). I’m not put off by it. I love this dude. Cards bias playing into that? Nah. He throws like 120 MPH and his Statcast goes hard. Mostly. Aside from BB%, Avg. EV, HardHit%, and Barrel%, he’s basically 99th or 100th percentile in everything else.
Clay Holmes has been sooooo good this year, coming out of nowhere to be one of the best waiver adds, like, ever. Alas, all good things must come to an end. Holmes’s days in the 9th aren’t over yet, but he’s not the sole man for the job anymore, with Scott Effross picking up a save and Aroldis Chapman finally starting to figure things out again. Chapman has been great lately, with a 3.09 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, and 15 K over the last month (11.2 IP). He’s gotten even better in just the last couple weeks. Keep a cloooose eye on this sitch.
Holds Daddies
It’s not just closers on bad teams who can be helpful! Dylan Coleman is evolving into a pretty steady setup guy for the Royals, and he picked up 3 HD and 4 K this week. One would think it’d be Josh Staumont getting all the fantasy value for KC, but Coleman has more than double the holds and half the ERA than Staumont.
Trevor Stephan still going strong, adding three more holds to his 2022 totals. Also had 5 K in just 2.2 IP.
John Brebbia had one of the uglier three-hold weeks I can remember: 2.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, and 0 K. But holds is holds!
Kendall Graveman had 1 SV and 2 HD. Vultured a save to give Hendriks a rest. Graveman is up to 20 HD on the year, and only five other pitchers have done that.
Anthony Bass is still pitching well after going back to the Blue Jays. Had 1 W and 2 HD this week, tossing four scoreless while striking out a pair.
Andres Munoz will probably be an elite closer someday. Had 2 HD and 6 K this week in 3.1 hitless/scoreless innings. Only blemish was a walk. His SwStr% is Diaz-esque, and he’s up to 71 K in 46.1 IP in 2022. That’s with just a 6.8% walk rate, mind you. And doubly mind you, three of his 12 BB this season have been intentional.
Both Dylan Floro and Steven Okert picked up 2 HD this week. Okert looked a little better with 5 K compared to Floro’s 3 K. Neither allowed a run.
Other Notes/Injuries
Kirby Yates is back! And he got 2 HD this week! But they were ugly holds! He didn’t strike anyone out, walked two, gave up two hits, and allowed a run. I’m…not interested in him at all with Minter and Iglesias well ahead of him on the depth chart.
Alex Colome landed on the IL. Lucas Gilbreath will see increased holds opportunities if you’re lacking.
Anthony Bender is back on the IL, so Floro and Okert are definitely your main setup men for the Marlins.
I didn’t talk about him above cuz he had an unremarkable week, but it’s looking like Jonathan Hernandez is your primary closer for the Rangers right now. No telling how long it lasts, especially with a new manager in the dugout.
Ken Giles got DFA’d and then straight released lol. I pumped this dude up pretty big in preseason, so this is a major anti-victory lap moment for me. I do believe he’ll get scooped up by someone, and I’ve seen rumblings that Toronto is interested again, but his days of fantasy usefulness may be in the rearview.
Corey Knebel is on the IL, so Jose Alvarado and/or Andrew Bellatti may see bigger roles in the meantime.
