Today concludes the fantasy baseball sleepers‘ portion of our program. *nudges homeless woman sleeping on my couch that I tried to get Cougs to agree to a threesome with* No more sleepers, Francine. Meh, I’ll let her rest. Like the 2nd basemen to target or outfielders to target, this post is necessary. You need to target the right names at the end of the draft for starters. Last year’s starters to target post included Marcus Stroman, Chris Bassitt, Tyler Mahle, Kevin Gausman, John Means, and Nathan Eovaldi, who I apparently can never get enough of. They’ve moved way up ranks this year with one making the jump to my top 20 starters, and, well, can you believe ESPN ranked Gausman 272nd overall last year and left Eovaldi unranked? As I always say, starters are available later. As with other target posts, these guys are being drafted after the top 200 overall. Also, all Steamer hitter projections are updated just about every day (mostly small adjustments), and all 2022 fantasy baseball rankings are updated. Anyway, here’s some starters to target for 2022 fantasy baseball:

Jose Urquidy (NFBC 216) Bit of a broken record with this line of “whoa” but it always makes me surprised like Keanu in any movie when Yahoo is more correct with their ranking than the drafters at NFBC. The most obvious reason that is because NFBC leagues are by and large deeper, so drafters are more apt to draft a starter earlier. Urquidy is the epitome of a reason why you shouldn’t draft starters early. Every team needs five to six starters (depending on the league), and there’s about 60 starters I would draft. There’s other starters that others would draft. The sheer number of starters available mean there’s gonna be starters like Urquidy that fall through the cracks. Even if your league goes after starters aggressively, at a certain point, they’re going to start drafting hitters, and that’s how Urquidy, and others fall.

Anthony DeSclafani (NFBC 212) These first two guys have big “fell through the cracks” energy. Throw out 2020, as most people would like to do, and DeSclafani is a ~8.6 K/9, ~2.3 BB/9, ~3.60 ERA pitcher over the last ~320 IP. Lots of mustache symbols there because I’m lazy, and that is really the sexiest of symbols.

Noah Syndergaard (Yahoo 210, NFBC 213) Kinda a fell in the cracks too. It’s, brucely, been surprising how forgotten Syndergaard has been this preseason. If he threw a month last year, he would have an ADP around 120, but 80-100 spots later because he just didn’t return a few weeks earlier for a team that didn’t need him. He’s moving to a good park and a weak division. Rangers got better, but their park sucks; A’s lineup is the equivalent to the roll of quarters you get for looking at a timeshare; Seattle got no-hit two times a week every week last year, and Houston is good, but that’s one team.

Patrick Sandoval (NFBC 202) See what I said for Syndergaard, and add in young and upside. Also, gave you my Patrick Sandoval sleeper.

Tony Gonsolin (Yahoo 269, NFBC 290) I’m old enough to remember when everyone wanted to draft Tony Gonsolin, which means I’m at least 13 months old. I know, you’re surprised I’m that old. It’s the gingko biloba! You’re prolly thinking, “Gonsolin did terrible last year, so people have soured on him. Sorry, Grey, some people can change their thoughts on a player!” Okay, no reason to snap at me, and Gonsolin had a 10.5 K/9 and 3.23 ERA last year. Now you might be thinking, “Sure, he was great…in middle relief!” ACKUALLY, he threw in 15 games, and 13 were starts. Now you might be thinking, “Why don’t more people like him?” That’s what I’m wondering!

Jordan Montgomery (Yahoo 262, NFBC 202) Ya know how Michael Jordan soared from the free throw line to dunk? Jordan Montgomery can do that from the pitcher’s mound. Only instead of jumping, he throws the ball. Impressive, right? Without looking at my Jordan Montgomery sleeper — though, you absolutely should — I’m just gonna look at his 9.3 K/9, under-3 BB/9, and say I don’t understand how he could be falling so far in drafts.

Ranger Suarez (Yahoo 251) Ya know what’s funny that’s not haha funny? Sometimes a guy will exceed expectations by so much that people back off them because they know they’ll never repeat the previous year. Think this is going on with Ranger Suarez. People know he’s not a 1.36 ERA pitcher, and don’t want anything to do with him because of that. He’s not a 1.36 ERA pitcher, but that doesn’t mean he’s not solid either. Also, gave you my Ranger Suarez sleeper. By the by, I write sleeper posts in November, and they’re still applicable. Give me my kudos!

Tanner Houck (Yahoo 233, NFBC 202) Just did a spit take when I saw he had a 11.4 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 2.58 FIP and an ADP after 200 anywhere. So, now I have to pick boba off my computer screen. With my tongue. Want one guy who is  being wrongly projected by every single person except me? Tanner Houck! I honestly don’t know why Tanner Houck is being projected to lose two Ks per nine and have a 4.50+ ERA by some. Maybe ask them. Also, gave you my Tanner Houck sleeper.

Jon Gray (Yahoo 289, NFBC 233) Ya know Marvin Berry in Back to the Future when he’s on the phone with his cousin — his cousin! — Chuck Berry, and he tells him to listen to Johnny B. Goode? That fever-pitched excitement is gonna be Jon Gray on the phone with Rockies starters when he gets off the mound the first time he pitches in Texas. “This here is the stuff! You gotta get out of Colorado!”

Bailey Ober (Yahoo 280, NFBC 256) He has a 60-grade command of the strike zone and had a 1.9 BB/9 last year in 92 1/3 IP in the majors, i.e., what’s the worst thing that could happen? He gives up four solo homers every start? He’d still have an under 4 ERA, as long as he goes five innings. Also, gave you my Bailey Ober sleeper.

Cristian Javier (Yahoo 303, NFBC 297) Guys and five girl readers, there are so many pitchers to draft later on. Maybe I’m Mr. Confirmation Bias on the CB screaming after some trucker speed that there’s a ton of pitchers you can draft late because that’s my schtick, but, seriously, there’s so many pitchers late, right? It’s not just me, right? Is Cristian Javier your ace? No. He’s not even your number three. But later on as a guy who can give you 120-ish IP with a 11-ish K/9? Yes, please, all day with pickles. Of course, I want that! Also, and this doesn’t excuse Yahoo, but I can see why NFBC is around 300 on on him in their ADP. In deeper leagues, you need safer IP. In a league like a 12-teamer though? Give me all that upside goodness.

Joe Ryan (Yahoo 241, NFBC 212) Here’s one thing I think some of you are missing in your medulla oblongtas. If a pitcher has good command, they’re only going to be so bad. It’s hard to go wrong with a 1.7 BB/9, which is what Joe Ryan had last year. Sure, that was only in 26 2/3 IP in the majors, but he is a 1.7 BB/9 guy. He’s got 60-grade command. I joke around about the Twins being as economical with their checkbook as their pitchers are with their pitches, but that’s because it’s true. Also, gave you my Joe Ryan fantasy.

James Kaprielian (Yahoo 343, NFBC 370) The situation in Oakland-soon-to-be-Vegas feels perfect for James Kaprielian to throw 150 IP and have a 9+ K/9, 4.15 ERA with a record of 7-16. You want some of that smoke? Then poof poof, baby, poof poof!

Hunter Greene (Yahoo unranked, NFBC 453) & Nick Lodolo (Yahoo 345, NFBC 548) All I’ll say at this time for these guys is my season’s first Buy/Sell is coming this afternoon at noon PST.

Hey Grey,

I have long prioritized hitting over pitching as it seems there are many a value to be had in under-drafted starters, but my pitching categories have suffered almost every year in my basically-a-dynasty 25/30 keep forever league (+5 NA, 5IL). I’m guessing it’s because we have 5SP and 6RP, which seems to be more than most leagues. Does more pitching slots make you give pitchers more values in drafts and trades or are you still prioritizing hitting and trying to snag guys like Houck, Ober, Cease? (10tm)

Thanks!

Grey, 8 teams league with 5 keepers. I have Alonso would you keep him for just this year at $1 or contract him for 2 years so he’d be $6 this year and 11 next year? 260 budget

12 team h2h points keep 6

How aggressively would you go after Witt Jr in a keep forever league with no costs attatched? Top talent in the draft will be names like Will Smith, Goldy, Judge, Semien, Story, Bryant, Castellanos, Robert, Musgrove, Manoah, etc. Maybe make sure I get one of those big names in the first and then reach for Witt in the second?

Which of the following starters would you prioritize right now? Have room for 1 in a 10-team, 10-P keeper league (can keep folks up to two years): Keller, Deters, Brash?

Grey,

Need a trade opinion in a points league. I’m stuck right now with no 2B or C. I typically don’t carry C since it’s a daily lineup instead of weekly lineup, so I can just pick up and plug a C every day that’s starting. However, we lowered transaction limits this year, so I kinda need to carry one. I’m debating offering Teoscar/Mahle for India/Will Smith the C/Morton. Yes, I hate trading Teoscar, but it’s easier to find a replacement OF. My other option is trading Devers/ for Kris Bryant/India and trying to find a cheap C on waivers like Kirk or Vasquez. Thanks!

For what it’s worth, not that you need another opinion other than Grey’s, stay away from that Devers for Bryant/India deal. You could get much more for Devers if you’re really willing to part with him.

Good luck!

Hi there your Greyness- at the turn of a 12 team draft, would you rather Trout+Devers or Acuna+Devers?
Who do you think will have a better season, Tim Anderson or the very young Wander Franco?

wow really… that’s a pretty bold outlook for Wander to out produce a proven stud like Anderson, or Story. I love his talent, but is he ready to put up those kinda numbers? Maybe you’re right… That on base streak last year was pretty impressive for such a young hitter.

Hey Grey,

I’m pretty happy with my pitching staff in a 10 team H2H category league but I’d like to get your input on a few of my end of the bench pitchers.

F. Peralta
Gausman
Morton
Manaea
R. Suarez
Sonny Gray
Houck
P. Sandoval
Logan Gilbert

Would you lose any of these guys for any of these pitchers on the list assuming they’re all still available?

Thank you!

It has a good look, but it includes a grid of everybody’s picks, which I don’t need when I’m drafting. Just takes up space. Already have the ability to look at any individual team. That’s just me, of course. When it becomes the only option, I’ll use it, no problem. But for now, I’ll stick with the old version.

Grey I’m guessing that Kimbrel moves up in your closer rankings with the Dodger move. And down goes Treinen/Hudson.
Also, any word on Torkelson? Think he gets the callup this spring, or are they playing the service time game?

I have a few H2H 5×5 category redraft leagues drafts this weekend. I have done some mock drafts and always seem to end up with Witt, Torkelson, R. Greene, and Julio Rodriguez. The last 3 I have been getting around or after pick 200 (filling out my bench) and seem to have more upside than like a Tommy Pham type player. I think I’m a little gunshy after how poorly prospects performed last year, but those 4 are pretty solid correct?

Thank you for doing SPs today — on behalf of all “last Sunday before Opening Day” drafters, we appreciate it. Two supplemental questions:

If deGrom starts the season on the IL, do you expect Megill to get his rotation spot? If so, what do you think about Megill has an NL-only SP5?

Other deep SP5 options include Ynoa and Luzardo — though I have your wise counsel that “in a deeper league, you need innings vs. upside” in my head. I know a lot of upside options, but who are some “safer” NL-only deep SP5-types?

Thanks!

Happy Friday Grey!!

Tomorrow is my auction, and I’m trying to get my plans in order.

10-Team, NL-Only H2H, 5×5 (OBP), $280

Current Keepers ($77)
Acuña 53
O’Neil 2
India 1
Cronenworth 10
Alcantara 11

After Soto, I am targeting HR/SB type guys and believe I can get Edman, Thomas, and Rojas for around $65 (= 1 Soto). I will then only need a $1-2 catcher, 1B, UTIL, and scrubby OF to hold space for Acuña.

A)  Because of a limit on $, I can probably end up with Cooper or Votto. However, there are plenty of $1-3 scrubs like Tellez, Flores, Beer, Moran, etc. I also have position flexibility with Cronenworth

B)  Tatis Jr. is getting thrown back into the auction instead of being kept for $25. Probably the right decision, but too bad I’m really trying to win it this year. Only way I could get him would be to ditch Soto and get a $30 OF in his place, which would be in the Suzuki/Grisham price range. Thoughts???

C)  I have $50 set aside for three of Webb, Rogers, Bassitt, Stroman, Mahle (if prices go too high for other three) and $20 for two of Suarez, DeSclafani, I. Anderson, Ynoa, Marquez, Gonsolin.

D)  I have zero $ set for a closer with a job this year.  I am used to winning 60-70% of weekly Saves Points, so this is uncharted territory. Closers with jobs usually go for $12 (shaky) to $30. Hader, Gallegos, Knebel, McGee, Treinen, and Bednar are all being kept.

Please rank these RPs:  Bender, Hudson, Warren, Rainey, Pagan, Robertson. Anyone else you are set on to try and score for $3-7?

E)  Can you see any reason to shift $ from one of Edman, Thomas, and Rojas to a different type of hitter, a 4th solid SP, possible upgrade to Nola from one of the guys in “C”, or a closer.

As always, Thank you for the best content out there!

I wish this series of “target” articles were released earlier. They are gold. I know you aren’t going to change your patterns for my earlier drafts but damn I couldve used these takes 2 weeks ago. Great work and I read them all anyway because you’re fantastic.

It seems like most of them are in the tiers he likes in his SP ranks. Maybe not Javier since he’s a middle reliever but that could just be April fools!

In a 5×5 AL only roto 5x5league
Variations
OBP TB SB R RBI
(W+QS) (SV+H/2) ERA WHIP K
Keeping
Mondesi – 11
Gleyber – 20
Kiriloff 10
Hays 10
Badoo 6

Bieber 16
Steckenrider 1
Kitteridle 1
Chargeois 1

Yandy Diaz – boring 7 dollar but I think worth keeping in an obp TB league – Agree?

Cut decisions. Its a keeper league and pitching can be expensive. I’m considering keeping is Skubal but he is 27. Gausmann is going to be well over 30 (homer blue jay toronto league) and I can see Syndergard going for 30 too. Is Skubal a keep in this setup or meh

Abraham Toro. Is he going to get at least 400 AB’s Is he a keep at 8?
Ibanez – For realsies going to produce at least 5 bucks?
I have a 6 dollar Adam Engel – Is he really going to hold the 4th outfield spot?

Will Jake burger get a real shot? I can protect him cheaply on my major league roster but I’m wondering if should let someone else chase him.

Thanks as always for any input.

Hi Grey,

Good morning.

Would appreciate your comment on my recent draft:

14 Team League, H2H, with BB and 2 UTL
Standard Pitching with L, k/9, SV and Holds
7 keepers

C – Murphy
1b – Olson
2b – Urias
3b – Donaldson
SS – Story
OF – Judge
OF – Tucker
OF – Franmil Reyes
UTL – Candelario
UTL – Nathaniel Lowe
BN – Avisail Garcia

SP – Scherzer, Peralta, Gausman, Stroman, Quantrill, Ober, Cristian Javier, German Marquez
RP – Jansen, Gallegos
NA – Trevor Bauer

With the way the draft went, guess I’m puntting steals and avg.
I got solid Power, RBI, OBP, 2bs.

SPs are strong. Need to see how they perform to latter move one for another RP.

What do you think?

Also, with Urias going to DL, would you add from the wire: Cesar Hernandez, Adam Frazier or Josh Rojas?

Many thanks,
Chris

Hi Grey, thanks as always. Just did a mock draft for my 9-team NL-only 5×5 (SVHDs) — because of my keepers (asterisked) and desire for Freeman, I think I’m running “stars and scrubs” here. So, wanted to run two questions by you:
Good balance of HR/RBI and SB/Runs?

And do you think this is enough pitching?

Thanks!

C: Bart
1B: Freeman
2B: Turner*
SS: Rojas, M
3B: Riley*
OF: Castellanos*
OF: Suzuki
OF: Pham
UTIL: Voit
UTIL: Lane Thomas
UTIL: de la Cruz
P: Peralta*
P: Alcantara*
P: Suarez, R
P: Ynoa
P: Keller
P: Ashby
P: Hudson
P: Robertson
Bench: Art Warren
Bench: Luke Jackson
Bench: Matt Beaty

Hey Grey! Thanks for all the draft help!
I’m in a 10 team, 6 keeper league- 5×5 w/OBP. You can trade draft picks for keepers. So far I’m looking at-
-Acuna
-Machado
-Olson
-Alonso
-Tucker
-Giolito

Guys available for trade are-
-Cole
-Albies
-Mullins
-Freeman
-Starling
-Lowe
-Bryant

So- who’s worth trading for? Most likely it would involve my first (seventh) round pick for that guy and the other team’s last round pick. I’m thinking of pushing for Cole (since it’s really a 7th rounder that I’m giving up). Anyone else worth the push?

Thanks!

I got Cole and an 8th (14th) round pick for Giolito and a 2nd (8th) rounder. Feels like a solid upgrade since i didn’t have to drop too far.

Hey Grey! This list is gorge. Makes me want to take 1 top 35 arm and live in this list.

Last keeper deadline is today! I’m sitting on 2 offers around my $22 Devers. Bonkers for him but these deals are making me wonder if I should be shipping him:

Option A: My $22 Devers for his $14 Mondesi + one of $18 Wheeler or $16 Ray or $12 Musgrove.

Option B: My $22 Devers + $33 Harper for his $14 Mondesi, $18 Teoscar, + one of $16 Ray or $12 Musgrove (or maybe $18 wheeler).

Other element: with my existing keepers, I currently only have 39% of my total budget ($103) to spend on 15 spots ($6-7 per spot). Option B has the added benefit of freeing up a good deal more cash to spend between saving about $10-20 in salary combined with not needing to spend $25-$35 on a auction-inflated top 35 pitcher.

I’m totally bonkers for Devers but wonder if either of these deals make sense. Mondesi could be a disaster, but as Ricky Bobby would say, you’re either first or last!

Thanks a lot!

Sorry, adding a third option that just came in:

Option C – my $33 Harper for his $11 Lance Lynn (Lynn would be a $35-$39 pitcher in this league)
(this one feels really interesting . . . would let me keep Devers and not have to think at all about pitching – meaning that I could spend draft dollars to guarantee I get interesting guys like Seiya, Kelenic etc.).

I know I’m not Grey but that $11 Lynn is really tempting. I’m assuming you have at least one other top bat that you’d still be keeping instead of Harper?

Yea, 8 keepers. If I did this trade, my keepers would be:

$35 Acuna
$22 Devers
$22 Story
$18 Yordan
$13 Eloy
$11 Brandon Lowe
$11 Lynn
$3 Bassitt

or if I did Option A and Option C:
$35 Acuna
$18 Teoscar
$14 Mondesi
$22 Story
$18 Yordan
$13 Eloy
$11 Brandon Lowe
$11 Lynn
(no Bassitt)

I think I like C only- $22 devers + $3 bassitt instead of teoscar and mondesi. (unless you’re staring 5 or more OF, in which case Teoscar becomes more valuable…)

Kinda miffed at the lack of interest in Joe Ryan. He was dominant in the minors, great when he got called up, and carried that over to ST. This is the kind of guy people foam at the mouth for. Is it his name? Lack of fantasy media hype? Doesn’t throw 98 mph?

Yeah I’m bummed–couldn’t squeeze him in among my AL-only keepers and was hoping to pick him back up at the draft for not much more than the $4 I had him for, and now his stock’s gone way up and I’m gonna have to pay.

Adding insult to injury, the main reason I couldn’t keep Ryan is I had to keep Kimbrel because I picked him up after the trade last year. Now with him traded back to the NL after our keeper deadline, I just have nobody in that last slot. Dang it!

Hey grey
Have to decide on my final 2 keepers. Definite keepers are Soto, bichette, treat-urner, and Devers.

Can keep two of these guys – keeper rounds in parenthesis.

Cease (23)
Aaron Nola (27)
Schwarber (23)
Ray (19)
Franmil (14)
India (27)

Any help appreciated – Thanks!

I hope to see Bobby Witt in today’s buy!!! He’s gonna start the season in the majors. He’s hitting .478/.520/.870/1.390 this spring.

It’s a lock. I know Bdon already has to get a Grey tattoo because Hunter Greene is starting the season in the majors… but this one is actually a tattoo worthy lock. People with drafts this weekend should draft accordingly.

Keeper/Contract league with 5×5 stats with OBP instead of BA. Current draft left me with limited options to contract but here are my current choices:
V. Brujan @ $0 for 4 years
D. Cease @ $8 and T. Glasnow @ $15 for 3 years
J. Walsh @ $12 and S. Suzuki @ $0 and Jesus Sanchez @ $0 for 2 years.

Would you suggest any changes based on the other options I have?
Keibert Ruiz $0
Myles Straw $2
Lane Thomas $0
Joe Ryan $0
Tarik Skubal $1
Matt Brash $0

Thanks. Now I have the following:
Glasnow – 4 year
Cease – 3-year
Suzuki – 3 year
Walsh – 2 year
Sanchez – 2 year

Final 2-year contract: Joe Ryan or Keibert Ruiz?

Thanks

Thanks Grey! Had my draft last and feel like I botched it. With Nola and Peralta on the board I took Simien thinking Peralta would come back to me. He didn’t. 10 team roto, Team is:
1b – Walsh
2b – Simien
Ss – Wander
3b – Devers
Of – Soto
Of – O’Neil
Of – Kelenick
Util – Edman
SP – Gausman – Lynn – Cease – Montas – Mannaea

Did I ruin my summer?

Also, a great new album came out today – Sadistik & Kno – Bring Me Back to When the World is Cured

Kno is the producer for the cunninlyguists. I think he’s the most underrated producer in rap. Just amazingly consistent. Sadistik is a really good rapper. They put out a really good ep a few years ago and this blows that away. Thanks for all of your work Gray! Excited to start seeing streamonator and dk optimizer to start populating!

I’ve read a lot of your posts where you’ve talked about waiting on SP’s . Are you suggesting that I take my first SP in the top 10 range?, top 20? If you’re at pick 7 in a 12 team league would you grab the top hitter available or top SP, i.e. Cole or Burnes? Thanks very much.

Hey Grey- In a shallow categories keep 3 years league, how are you drafting prospects this year? Who are you reaching for in drafts and when? How many is too many?

Thanks. I won’t be drafting in rds 8/9 due to keepers so I’ve been thinking about Witt in the 4/5 or 6/7 turn if he’s there (I’m near the end). 10 teams and 18 man rosters, one NA. Would coming out of the draft with Witt and Tork make you less likely to jump in on Adell or Cruz? Or in that format are you more comfortable with that risk

SF has apparently indicated McGee will start the season as Closer, but I am dubious (SF has always been toughest team wrt closers) — they always committee.

with this prelude, please rank: McGee; Trivino; Hudson; Suarez.

I drafted Suarez and Houck in the RCL last night, probably because they were mentioned in Hobbs’ post yesterday and the fact I kept waiting too long on pitchers I wanted earlier. Another league where my hitting looks great and my pitching looks weak. Very predictable.

Gonsolin may have started 13 of his 15 games last season, but he only threw 55 innings, so was in effect more of a bulk guy coming off his shoulder issues. Add in a 5.5 BB/9 and an xFIP/SIERA just shy of 4.70 and you start to see why some folks weren’t impressed.
