(NOTE: THIS POST WAS RELEASED EARLY THIS WEEK ON OUR PATREON. IT’S $10/MONTH.)

I heard Kendrick Lamar say “Keep playin’, man” in the song We Cry Together — a great song for a couple’s first dance at their wedding, by the way — and I had a vision. I heard “Keep playin’, man” and I saw Nick Senzel. He was “playin’.” Out on the field and just “playin’.” What a world. From top prospect in 2018, with the label “future All-Star as soon as 2019.” Just absolutely overcoming all odds, from losing a blonde dame in Golden Gate Park that gave him Vertigo to talking like Jimmy Stewart that drove his friends and family crazy to googling “Nick Senzel injuries” and having Google say, “C’mon, man, you need to be more specific.”

Seriously, look at that. 364,000 results in 0.47 seconds is Nick Senzel’s injury history to a tee. In just the first four rows listed there, he had four different injuries in one month in 2019. I’d laugh if I wasn’t worried it would somehow cause a butterfly to flap its wings into Senzel’s oblique and injure him. With all that said, Nick Senzel was the top option on the 7-day Player Rater rostered in under 25% of leagues, so here’s to him finally making it all come together and “keep playin’, man” for at least another week. Anyway, here’s some more players to Buy or Sell this week in fantasy baseball:

BUY

Cal Raleigh – Sounds like a guy who went to NC State who was from California. “Dudes, why you harshing my buzz and calling me, Cal Raleigh?” That’s Cal Raleigh.

Eric Haase – Had Haase earlier this year in one league, which sucked. But he’s hitting now, so now’s the time you should haas Haase.

Vinnie Pasquantino – Already gave you my Vinnie Pasquantino fantasy. ACKSHUALLY, I gave you one a few weeks ago, when he was the lede buy too with a Vinnie Pasquantino fantasy, II. No relation to Michael Harris II.

Juan Yepez – Been hot, and his name is also the answer for how many Kanye dispensers they have on eBay.

Alex Kirilloff – *taps the sign* Sign reads: Kirilloff’s value comes from him hitting homers.

Darick Hall – Here’s what I said the other day, “(Darick Hall was a) 16th round pick in the 2016 draft who mashes. About time the Phils put hitting for power and nothing else first over defense and approach! The Phils fell asleep watching Edwin Encarnacion career highlights, and decided to make a whole team of E5’s. What are Darick Hall’s initials? DH? Yes, that’s about it, and just for NL-Only for now.” And that’s me quoting me!

Cavan Biggio – *wavy lines* Craig Biggio throws a 5-year-old Cavan a piece of Silly Putty right into his ribs. The toddler falls off, crying. Craig yells, “That’s why you have elbow pads!” *wavy lines* This might be why Cavan doesn’t wanna wait too long for his pitch.

Seth Brown – Figure Brown gets up with no one on, and the pitchers are just throwing him whatever at least once every few games for him to hit it out, i.e., it’s bad pitch o’clock, yeah, it’s Seth thirty.

Alfonso Rivas – He’s hitting ninth, so you can do the Carlton dance grabbing him if you need some Alfonso RBIs’eiro.

Vidal Brujan – Apropos of nothing, starting to get the feeling Brujan is going to be a 2023 sleeper.

Isaac Paredes – Did you notice any difference this week with the Buy column? I leaned heavier on the 7-day Player Rater roster percentages than ESPN. The big difference is our roster percentages are way higher, because our fantasy baseballers (<–my mom’s term!) are better and quicker picking up guys. Paredes, for unstints, is at 90% (when I wrote this) in RCLs, and at ESPN he was at 22%.

Diego Castillo – Was supposed to lose his starting job, instead he starting actually hitting and it was glorious for the one league where I have him rostered, as I watched myself get sonavabenched by him game after game.

Tony Kemp – I wonder if he ever gets mail from one of Shawn Kemp’s 24 kids, like, “You don’t know me Tony, but I know you.” I’d bet someone five imaginary dollars that Tony’s received at least one of those accidentally. What’s not an accident (like a guy on a tech company campus, I am running some segues today!), Kemp’s been hitting a bit recently.

Gio Urshela – Not only can you grab him because he’s been hitting, but you can also change your team name to Urshela is My-Shela.

Nick Allen – Saw that Allen was hot recently over the last seven days, and then I saw his actual stats and, well, pregnant pause, um, uh, moving on!

Miguel Rojas – Had a brain fart and thought Rojas was younger than he actually is. He’s 33! When did that happen? Thank God for cheap teams, the Marlins gave this absolute bozo close to 900 games and $10 million. Not even sure if he would’ve made some other teams out of spring training for the last ten years. Can you imagine the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, or a host of other teams ever starting this schmohawk? Any hoo! He’s been hot.

Evan Longoria – Since Longoria does so little all year, I don’t get much opportunity to mention how wild it is what a miserably awful player he became after leaving Tampa. He’s been hitting a little bit recently, but, by and large, he’s just awful. I don’t subscribe to the Rays’ newsletter that they always make great trades, but even though they got nothing back for Longoria, getting rid of him for a crate of unjarred mayonnaise would’ve been preferable.

Abraham Toro – Maybe because I wrote a sleeper post for Toro this offseason, I keep expecting big things still. Turned out Toro was a sleeper like Ferdinand. Grey working in cutesy references!

Tyrone Taylor – As I said when Renfroe went down, Taylor would get a boost in value, and he has. And that’s me paraphrasing me!

Kole Calhoun – Is it me (it’s not me) or does it seem like one week a month Kole Calhoun gets hot, and by the time it comes around to picking him up, he is no longer hot? It’s why we should never trust redheads. They are possessed by Satan.

Rafael Ortega – Fun fact! The word raffle comes from a Venezuelan man named Rafael who used to sell tickets to try to win a Casio keyboard.

Jake Meyers – Nearly made him the lede Buy this week, but I couldn’t pull the trigger on my excitement. He has speed, power, decent hit tool, and…Well, I’m getting excited again, but not quite enough in shallower leagues. I could see a 15-team mixed league pickup, but need to see something before he’s 12 team mixed worthy.

Edward Olivares – Already gave you my Edward Olivares fantasy. Dan Pants just gave you a Olivares fantasy last week. Guys and five ladies, we’re all very enthusiastic. The problem: Are the Royals excited enough to play him?

Kyle Isbel – While we all want Olivares, we might be better off wanting Isbel.

David Peterson – This is a Streamonator call like the call it makes to Best Buy.

Jose Urquidy – This is also a Streamonator call. “Do you have any appliances there that look like they could use a friend?”

A.J. Minter – Fun fact! Minter is the female version to parents telling their boy, “Use Listerine, mister!” Also, with Kenley out, Will Smith is lurking, like it’s an Oscars’ stage and someone made an alopecia crack.

Seranthony Dominguez – That the Phils haven’t thought about teaming Seranthony with a minor league prospect named Joedee Foyster is just not thinking about all the fantastic tie-ins they can do. “Hey, Gloria, the guy is asking if you want your human brains wit’ Whiz.” That’s a Phillie fan in line for the new cheesesteak at The Bank.

Tanner Scott – It burns me up like falling asleep in the tanning bed of Orange Is The New Black Tanning Salon in Orange, New Jersey that I drafted and/or picked up every other Marlins’ reliever and Tanner Scott is the guy that will lead the club with saves.

Yerry De Los Santos – New Pirates’ closer? Doubtful, but maybe after his smash hit, SAGNOF across the Mersey.

Jhoan Duran – Might have actually finally adverbially moved in front of Pagan for saves in Minny-soda. Even if he didn’t, much like Clay Holmes before him, he’s been worth rostering either way. Since Pagan’s been so bad, I wonder if Griffin Jax gets some 9th inning lox, uh, looks.

Eli Morgan – If you would’ve told me in the preseason Eli Morgan was someone I’d want, I’d say, “Yeah, for my taxes, right?” Then Eli Morgan put up numbers that are eye-poppingly gorgeous from middle relief, and now all I can think is, “Anyone know how to use Turbo Tax?”

SELL

Joe Musgrove – I’ve teased it out long enough. I’ve rubbed your shoulders, and you thought, “Well, that is quite pleasant,” but what you didn’t know is I was tenderizing you so I could cook your ass with my Joe Musgrove sell. It’s the oldest trick in the book, “How To Serve A Fantasy Baseballer (With A Sell.)” There was even a teasing of the brain-modules when I gave you a Youtube Sell about Joe Musgrove, told through the mouth of Queen Elizabeth as she tramped her way through the English countryside. People enjoying Musgrove this year clearly have forgotten why he was so draftable later. It’s because he didn’t have a good 2nd half last year, and totally flamed out in September. That was the case in 2019 too (though it was August that year). August and September in 2018? Yup, same story. Maybe he can avoid the drop-off this year, but you’re betting against the house. I wouldn’t trade him away for a bag of Lay’s Cappuccino Potato Chips but I would go to our Fantasy Baseball Trade Analyzer and explore options.

How good is Mike Clevinger? Never owned him but his career #s look solid. He’s a FA in my shallow league

I have an 8 man SP rotation with Nick Pivetta, Joe Ryan, & Spencer Strider at the end

I picked up Strider partly because he throws a hundo, but mainly because of his stache

Facial hair aside, is Clevinger a must roster? I might DFA Jared Walsh or Adley Rutschman if the hippie has your recommendation

Thanks for your work Grey – your humor cracks me up across the pond

Hope you Yankees enjoy your colonist’s day of insurrection

Grey Hope your July 4th weekend is bangin.
For some inexplicable reason the same guy who dropped Julio Rod earlier this season has now dropped Morel
I Played the past week with just 4th OFs (thanks Eloy) but still in 2nd. Hitting is lacking though. I am 2nd in SBs; 6th in HRs; 8th in both RBIs & BA & 10th in Rs. So I do need hitting help.
1) How much of my $412 FAAB (9 other teams have more $$) would be needed to get Morel if I was being aggressive?
2) Other decent guys are Yepez, Duran, Senzel, Ortega, Madris, Duvall, or Taveras. Assuming Morel is the grand prize …could you rank the top 3 of the rest. Sort of assuming the last 3 or 4 are $1 bids.

Happy holiday weekend!

Roster crunch coming up, trying to see what to do. 10 team redraft h2h OBP and QS league. My roster:

C: G. Sanchez
1B: Au Shizz
2B: Profar
3B: JRam
SS: Tim Anderson
MI: Witt Jr.
CI: C. Walker
OF: Acuna, Giancarlo, $54 vending machine steak
U: J. Walsh
BN: Voit, Baez, Vinnie P.

SP: Manoah, Montas, Lynn, Javier, Kirby
RP: Clase, Holmes
BN: Taillon, Sandoval

IL: Seiya, Eloy

Seiya is supposed to be activated Monday. Eloy is projected for next week sometime if no setbacks. Jarren Duran is also looking legit at the top of the Sawks lineup with speed and is a FA.

Short of a consolidation trade, who is the drop to activate Seiya? And is there a second drop for Duran?

Thanks and hope it’s a great 4th!

I do have a few quick questions if you’re online today:

1.) u holding H. Greene or could he be dropped for Singer’s start @ DET?

2.) u holding J. India and/or Pham in a 12-team league or use those spots as rotating streamer/ batty-calls?

3.) u starting M. Gore today @LAD?

Thanks as always and enjoy the holiday!!

Weekly check-in for my third place team in a 12 teamer h2h. I am within 2 games of first place so very tight at the top. 20 games clear of 7th place so really focused on building to a strong September playoff finish. Team and WW below:

C- Vazquez
CI- Freeman, Eugenio, Walsh
MI- Lindor, Wander, Polanco
OF- Play 5… Acuna, Robert, Julio, Happ, Pham
Util: Gleyber
SP – McClan, Cease, Kershaw, Montas, L Garcia, Taillon, Clevinger
RP- Diaz, Hader, Scott, Montero (hold is a category)
IL- Haniger

WW: Tellez, Rojas, Baez, Miranda, Cobb, Peterson, Stripling, Junis, Cimber, Adam, Drew Smith, Seranthony, Giles, Hand

1. Any swaps?
2. Nola owner might go for Montas plus one other SP. He does not like Taillon so wondering what offer you would make if any.
3. Was offered Hays for Polanco but leaning toward holding. You?

1. Sadly we play a 3rd baseman so can’t swap out Eugenio for Tellez. I grabbed Tellez for Montero tho to support my hitting.
2. Ended up trading my Kershaw and Clevinger for Nola. I can grab a holds guy with the opening.
Let’s go!

Lotsa arm chair quarterbacking now. Friends league so that is cool. We are casual but competitive.
Guy who took Kershaw and Clevinger for Nola wants to know if I would send him Cease instead of that duo. My original thought was I reduced my risk by dealing Kershaw and Clev but Cease is a wild child on an underperforming team.
So my choice:
Cease for his Nola or
Kershaw and Clev for Nola. My backfill would be a holds guy or Cobb.
Curious which one you would do?

sure seems now that TB isn’t sort of having brujan only be a lefty side guy now (unless they’re hiding some injury), doubleheader today, against no lefties, he starts not one of them. this is rare, for non-defensive liability types they almost ALWAYS start at least one of the two doubleheader games regardless of pitcher handedness. really with teams only having usually 4 BN bats it’s rare even for a defensive liability player to not start even once out of 2.

Thanks for this! By “this” I mean my new low grade panic about Musgrove. How do I un-see this trend? The back button? It’s not working!

Ok, so I know where I am, but…

Give Jeremy Pena (keepable for 16th round pick) to get Edwin Diaz (3rd)?

It’s a 12 teamer (H2H 6×6) with unlimited keepers, but escalating keep costs. Real hard up for saves, as usual, and I’m going for it this year. Probably have one more season, maybe 2, before I gotta retool.

NL only 10 team h2h with QS over wins, holds added. i was probably going to drop t.rogers (MIA) had he sucked yet and if ashcraft didn’t suck worse. but didn’t. meanwhile what in the hell MIL, manager last night str out says houser needs to be IR’d, but still isn’t. meanwhile tetreault (WAS) comes off waivers to go tomorrow.
have:
SP: t.rogers, ranger, rodon the monster, t.anderson, gibson, clevinger, houser, ashcraft
RP (max 4): seraanthony (who i want getting holds, here anyway, i’ve had this dude since middle april across many leagues), l.garcia (SD), k-rob, helsley
IR: matz, bender (probably just an easy drop when healthy with my bullpen as good as it’s been all year), treinen (we drafted fairly late and i still would’ve wanted him as holds guy after kimbrel, but good god that kimbrel signing timing here + injured almost all year hurt me probably more than any treinen spot)

(1): just drop ashcraft for tetreault now or hope nobody else obtains in the next few hours. h.greene also just dropped but he’s off waivers in 29 hours). pretty clearly matz will flip with houser in not long eventually anyway.

these are the entire other starters not owned: minor (heyo first not awful start all year today), tetreault, h.greene, minor, s.long (not really a starter but we’ve seen him go more innings than other non starter SP’s out there and i’ve used him before and did ok, also desclafani is out yet again (probably was never healthy with those 2 recent start results), freeland (a frequent streamer here and @ LAD next up), these last 2 put here as a completist joke: chi chi, weaver (who should be back in rotation and depth charts has him starting upcoming with davies out)

(2): bid how much out of 80/100 left on h.greene?

Beware the Shit Rope
Beware the Shit Rope
Reply to  Grey

he was dropped by the kind of owner that
(1): adds literally every/any prospect when called up or about to be
(2): uses multiple BN slots for them as we have 1 stash slot in this league (it’s a keep 3 per year at previous year’s ADP costs, so having at least one of these could prove very useful, but having more than 1 at a time isn’t. mine was o.cruz now m.vargas). basically he runs his team like a near bottom of standings dynasty team but that’s not what this league is.
(3): is very short term thinking otherwise though, will add garbage players if they just had a good game, will say drop h.greene for liberatore (it was noted if you looked hard that he’d be up this weekend, issue is of course liberatore hasn’t done well in MLB and has been doing badly in AAA too lately, whereas at least with greene we’ve SEEN the upside at MLB level and was a top 2 SP prospect just months ago, liberatore maybe barely in a top 100 list if made by a smart prospector)

yeah that’s true, but those are done in message board and in general the large majority of yearly money is used on those, some literally seem to never use any on purpose just to use even the full 100 on one player if they deem him the best one at trade deadline. i’ve used 20 so far, and some of that is probably overpaying, but i got guys i wanted to get with it. my offense has been fairly injured all year (currently harper, suzuki, naquin, o’neill, but also with wong and some others spent a good bit of time there). currently 6/9 of the other owners have more money than me and only one has a really small amount (32, used on somebody back in late march right after our draft who was signed late to NL)

and in his head 3 bad starts in a row is probably like many of us seeing a guy be bad for like 8 starts in a row (looking at greene now, it was last 3 in a row, and 5 out of the last 8 were pretty bad. but difference is all these other guys don’t have close to greene’s upside)

just one example, i’d bet green money this owner would say drop k.ruiz for m.perez at 3-5 am today. isn’t worried about playing time, nor history of either player. isn’t worried about upside either. does see “wow 3 HR’s” and jumps.

jebus, it was just yahoo. houser and o.gonz CLE got IR’d and fantrax had houser last night, gonz today, yahoo waited till like noon or 11 am to IR houser (STILL waiting on o.gonz CLE, he too was IR’d this morning). anywhoo, so i added s.long. drop him or ashcraft for h.greene if the bid wins? i went and looked up ashcraft, dude’s got a near 4 xera, fip, xfip and awesome groundball rate (54+), obv low K’s but he does go innings sometimes (whereas s.long nobody wants if in FA and chances of QS are really bad).

oh my god yahoo’s the worst, there’s even a new update that “o-gonz’s MRI came back with just rib swelling and he’ll be shut down for at least a week” but no yahoo IR yet.

i shouldn’t be surprised they pull this crap with players all the time, but it’s rough in deep leagues (o-gonz is AL only same league specs) when you can’t drop the guy (obviously o-gonz no big deal drop in even most 16’ers non dynasty probably, but a hit tool guy in OBP AL only where your weekly AVG OBP is under .300 quite often and i also have franmil/straw so i got the handcuff for off days on those 2 really shouldn’t drop)

and have naylor there too, so CLE leading the league in rainouts (i don’t need to look that up to be damn sure i’m right) is quite bad for me in that league (also NYY, got stanton, gleyber, naylor, straw, franmil, o-gonz)

o-gonz finally got his yahoo IR middle day sun, about 36-42 hours after the real life one.

Happy 4th Weekend Grey. Player Rater and Rudy’s Trade Analyzer are close. A catcher question. Who you rolling with ROS for runs, homers, RBIs, SB and Average? Keibert Ruiz or Christian Vazquez.

After 0 for 5 last night, benched Urias tonight and he has 2 dinger.

Hey Grey,
trying to decide which deadweight to cut. I need to drop someone to pick up K.Bryant in my 12 team 5×5 H2H keeper league. I’m guessing that it will be a pitcher as I have no bench bats. Also I’ve stashed a lot of SPs since my pitching is definitely my teams weakness. Which of these pitchers would you drop 1st? 2nd?
my team
C-KIRK
1B-RILEY
2B-SEMIEN
3B-BREGMAN
SS-PEÑA
OF-ACUÑA, SOTO, TROUT
UTIL-K.TUCKER, J.ROD
bench-WONG
IL-ALBIES

SP-BIEBER, L.GILBERT, MANAEA, COBB, T.ROGERS, KIRBY, PIVETTA
RP-E.DIAZ, BEDNAR, J.LOPEZ, RAINEY, J.DURAN
IL-EOVALDI, LODOLO, ASHBY

I will be dropping WONG to activate ASHBY if he gets the call tomorrow. Who else should I drop to try to grab BRYANT off of waivers? One of my starters? Duran/Rainey? Pena?

Hey Grey, hope you’re doing well. Would you be willing to trade Franco for Wheeler or Nola (also, which one would you prefer). Can’t get all my bats into the lineup and a bit short on pitching.

Thanks!

In a h2h league and in first place comfortably so I was taking the long view on Berrios. I did not see the game today. Stats would suggest he was lucky to avoid another 7-8 run blow up. True?
So I can hold and not start him hoping he rights the ship in a month or so. Or I can drop him and take a flier on Clevinger and his health. What are your thoughts?

Thanks! Looking more deeply I do have the option of taking Clevinger, Stripling, ERod, Lauer. One look better to you to stick on a 12 teamer?

long term yeppers, but d.castillo’s being used as lefty side guy so you’ll have more off days than playing days.
