What’s poppin’, Razzpimples?
Bullpen recap time!
Don’t forget to keep that Razzball Bullpen Chart bookmarked. It’s been updated with the latest, and I’m usually quick to get it touched up once any type of news drops. And if you’re not a subscriber, I do highly, highly, highly recommend it. The tools are — how do you say? — bussin’. If’n you’re of the mind to consider it, you can find all the info here. I’m partial to the Relievonator Game Log Tool. Truly a godsend for my nerdy backside.
Welp. Let’s do it to it, pardner.

Weekly Notes:
Note: All stats and Player Rater values are accurate through Monday’s games.
Gonna kick things off by talking about the Los Ailing Dodgers, who just lost Tanner Scott to elbow inflammation. That…is no good at all. Latest reports indicate no structural damage, so he’ll be shut down for a few days before resuming throwing. But I don’t have a good feeling about “elbow inflammation” and a “forearm sting.” Been following deadline chatter, and the Dodgers are likely going to add a high-end reliever now. The biggest names who are swirling around the rumor mill are Ryan Helsley, David Bednar, Emmanuel Clase, Cade Smith, Pete Fairbanks, Aroldis Chapman, Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, Raisel Iglesias, Kyle Finnegan, and Felix Bautista. Some of those are maybes, but I fully expect Helsley, Bednar, Finnegan, and Iglesias to move somewhere. In the meantime, look for Kirby Yates and Alex Vesia to be your closing tandem. Might even see Blake Treinen in that mix. He’ll be back pretty soon.
Jeff Hoffman stood out this time around, picking up 2 SV and striking out 7. Sure, he took a loss, but whatevs. Dude is #3 on both Player Raters up top. Poised to remain a massive asset ROS. He’s on that’s not going anywhere, and he has a safe job regardless of what the Blue Jays do at the deadline.
Ryne Stanek — former Hog, WOOOO PIGGGG — collected 2 SV this week. That’s fun for Edwin Diaz owners. Diaz had 1 W, 1 SV, and 1 BS, but at least all four of his outs were via K.
Kenley Jansen 1 SV, 0 K, boring metrics. I expected to see his name on likely trade candidate lists, but he ain’t been mentioned much. Angels are likelier to buy than sell, from what I can tell. Not the way I’d go about it, but Arte Moreno doesn’t do much that many folks agree on.
Trifecta alert! Ronny Henriquez had 1 W, 1 SV, 1 HLD, and then sadly 1 BS. Struck out 3. Ratios were not good. I’m giving him a pass. Been a badass all season long. And I’m gonna say something nice about Anthony Bender for once: 1 SV, 2 HLD, 3 K, and he’s looking pretty good of late. Over the last month, he’s had a perfect ERA and only a 0.55 WHIP, striking out 10 in 11 IP. He might be a guy that move to a new team with the way he’s handling high-leverage work. Every single contender wants more of that action.
Trevor Megill 2 SV, and then all zeroes. ERA, WHIP, and K all goose eggs. I’ll take it!
Devin Williams 2 SV, 5 K. Bro is finally locked in. I expect an elite second half.
Bryan King 1 SV, 2 HLD, 2 K. The Astros really are finding ways to have four badasses in SVHD formats: Josh Hader, Bryan Abreu, and Bennett Sousa are all kicking ass as well. Hader wasn’t his best this week, but still converted his lone save chance. Abreu earned a hold and blown save, but the metrics were friggin’ pristine: 41.7 K-BB%, 25 SwStr%, and 43.8 CSW%.
Brendon Little led all RP with 3 HLD this past week, striking out 4. Guy has been good in 2025. Yimi Garcia is still around, though, and could be back in action soon after a minor ankle sprain. Little has earned highest leverage if you ask me. We’ll see how things shake out.
Emilio Pagan 1 SV, 1 K. Haven’t seen his name pop up a ton, but I do think he’s likely to be traded. Free agent after this season and among the league leaders in SV. Has had an elite WHIP and very good ERA with strong metrics. FIP doesn’t like his ERA quite as much, but SIERA backs it up. And any team could use a guy with 51 K in 41 IP who’s got a single-digit walk rate (8.5%, which is a little better than league average).
Robert Garcia 1 SV, 3 K. Really only mentioning him because Chris Martin is on the shelf with a pretty serious-sounding calf strain (gonna miss over a month at least, I reckon). Garcia might have a clear path to mostly full-time closing duties, but I just don’t really trust him that much. Shawn Armstrong and Luke Jackson, and maybe even Hoby Milner could be in that mix.
David Robertson, who has been an FA all year (surprisingly), has stayed in shape and got snatched by the Phillies. DRob was largely very good in 2024, chugging holds for the Rangers. He’s like 75 years old now, but the man has plenty of high-leverage experience. If he can get whipped into shape, I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see him become the primary saves option for Philly down the stretch. His career splits look best in high leverage, and he’s always been a good postseason pitcher. Just what the doctor ordered for Philly…we’ll just have to see if that 40-yr-old body can hold up over that grind.
I’ll end with a recap of names to watch as the deadline approaches, and some names who might take their place on the depth chart:
- Clase and/or Smith; unlikely that both move; Gaddis/Herrin would bump up
- Jax and/or Duran; again unlikely that both move; Stewart/Sands would bump up; maybe the big names stay and Stewart gets dealt
- Bautista and/or Soto and/or Dominguez; likeliest that Dominguez/Soto move; Cano/Kittredge would bump up
- Fairbanks; Baker/Cleavinger would bump up
- Chapman; Hicks/Whitlock would bump up
- Helsley and Maton; Helsley almost certain to move, and Maton’s strong season makes him appealing, but he would take over as closer if he says; Romero would bump up
- Bednar and/or Santana; Santana bumps up if he stays; Ferguson would bump up
- Pagan; Santillan/Ashcraft would bump up
- Iglesias and/or Johnson; Lee would bump up
- Finnegan; Ferrer/Lord would bump up
- Robert Suarez? Jeff Passan mentioned he could be on the block as the “likeliest option” since he’s a pending FA in an area of excess strength for the Dads; Adam/Estrada/Morejon would all get even sexier than they already are
- Tyler Rogers? Another pending FA mentioned by Passan; Rodriguez/Doval/Walker would bump up
That’s all for this week! Thanks for reading. Leave me a comment below so I feel all warm and fuzzy.
Odds are quite good I was drinking either black coffee, dark beer, or some form of bourbon while writing what you just read. In the daylight hours, I’m a high school English teacher. I have completely left X/Twitter, so you can find me on Bluesky: @jkj0787.bsky.social, where I serve up daily bullpen recaps to my loyal tens of followers.
The flip side of that closer bump-up chart is current closers on contenders potentially losing their jobs to an incoming ace closer; e.g., maybe Tanner or Palencia or Devin Williams get bumped down from closer if their teams trade for a Clase or a Bautista.
Which current contender closers are at the most risk to be elbowed out by an incoming ace reliever?
I could see Dodgers snagging a top arm to bump everyone down. Don’t think Devin would get unseated. Palencia could. Whoever is in Philly could. Hoffman won’t. Munoz won’t. Megill won’t. Maybe Vest would.
Cubs could also grab a closer
Brewers won’t
What’s crazy is that 6 teams from each league will be dancing in October, and I feel like there aren’t 12 teams buying at the deadline
What about Detroit, will Tigers make moves
I would expect a reliever to be added. Caliber is anyone’s guess. They need a reliable lefty aside from Holton/Hurter.
