With two weeks left in the regular season, the playoff picture starts to come into view, with a few races undecided. The Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Cardinals’ Albert Pujols are chasing their own pieces of history. The season has set up for an exciting finish, and then our first glimpse at the new playoff format. […]

Yesterday, Aaron Judge went 4-for-5, 3 runs, 4 RBIs with his 58th and 59th homer, hitting .316, as he tightens his claim on the AL MVP. I’m Team Ohtani, but I will say that the Yankees are so bad outside of Aaron Judge — Giancarlo’s hitting .209! Judge for MVP is a perfectly reasonable argument to make. He truly is having an amazing season. On the Player Rater, he has about twice as much home run value as the third best home run hitter in the league, Yordan Alvarez. That is truly remarkable. But, just because that’s remarkable doesn’t mean he’s going to get to 74 homers for the home run record. National sportswriters counting down Aaron Judge homers like he’s not 14 away from the record with 16 games to play are just trying to generate clicks. Also, anyone saying Maris’s record is the real record is having a break from reality, let them be. It’s dangerous to wake them from their dream state. By the by, the case for Ohtani is quite simple — he’s a top 5 starter and a top 10 hitter. It will be Aaron Judge though, I’m not living in denial. Too much heat on Judge this year. For 2023 fantasy, Aaron Judge is gonna be so fascinating. Wouldn’t be shocked if we see him at number one overall for some, and as late as ten overall if he signs with a lesser team. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Please, blog, may I have some more?As we inch nearer and nearer to the end of the fantasy baseball season, there seem to be more and more clunkers down there in the Bar Mat. Lots of potential land mines here, double-dippers with a better chance of hurting your team than helping it. But hey, that’s why I’m here. We’re deep into […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Hey there! Do you look familiar? I recognize you from reading this article over the past 20+ weeks. While this may be the end, let’s ensure it ends on a high note! While many will be happy just to have made it to the finals, our goal is to hoist that trophy…or cash those checks. Whatever it may be that is your driving motivation. Let’s take it one step further, do you have any clue who Ken Rosewall is? Didn’t think so. What about Raymond Poulidor? The correct answer to that is “WHO?”. How about an easier one? Have you heard of Jim Kelly? Yes? Perfect! So what do those names all have in common? Ken Rosewall was a historic loser of the Wimbledon finals! How about Raymond Poulidor? His nickname was “The Eternal Second” due to his countless 2nd place finishes in the Tour de France. And finally, Jim Kelly. Yes, most of us old-timers know him from his historic 4 Super Bowl losses with the Buffalo Bills.
Ultimately, what has the paragraph above taught us? Finishing second is an easy way to be forgotten. To quote the great Ricky Bobby, “If you ain’t first, you’re last!” Now let’s Get Ahead In Head To Head and win that ‘ship!
Please, blog, may I have some more?Welcome back to another week of Top Dynasty Keepers.
If you have been a regular reader of this column throughout the season, then you know I have focused on a wide variety of players – from the hot-shot prospects to the players who have flown under the radar as prospects and perhaps throughout this season.
This week I want to highlight a player who falls into the “under the radar” category. That player is Jake McCarthy of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
OPENING EYES
McCarthy is not one of those players who was drafted toward the end of the draft and slowly made his way through the minor league system before getting his shot in the majors. However, he is not a player who everyone was waiting for him to get his chance so they can try to pounce and add them to their roster.
A left-hander who can play all three positions in the outfield, he was never close to being a top 100 prospect. In fact, McCarthy wasn’t even a top 10 prospect with the Diamondbacks entering the season. But that is why prospect lists are only one tool to use when evaluating players. Raw tools are great, but so too is desire and basic talent.
McCarthy doesn’t hit for a lot of power, but he is strong enough to not hurt you in the power department. He also doesn’t have elite speed, but he is above average and, coupled with his ability to get great jumps, he is a great base stealer.
Despite his lack of eye-popping tools, McCarthy has turned himself into a regular for the Diamondbacks. So let’s take a deeper look into the Arizona outfielder.
Please, blog, may I have some more?It saddens me to say this, but we’re down to the final few weeks of the fantasy baseball season. Almost everyone is in full-on fantasy football mode, but I’ve always preferred fantasy baseball. The grind and skill it takes to play roto baseball are much more intriguing than all of the coin flips in fantasy […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Bargains…Bargains…Bargains! Today, we’re all about bargains. I’m all about supporting small businesses and we’re going to extend that philosophy to DFS today. Why pay up for a name brand when the local brand is as good, or better, at a much more reasonable cost? Don’t overlook these players because they are making the MLB minimum […]
Please, blog, may I have some more? With a little more than two weeks left in the season, my home league playoffs haven’t even started yet. We’ve voted to get them moved up, of course. Commish just couldn’t get it figured out, or couldn’t remember to do it. Time went by. People forgot, and here we are, deciding the winner of a 26-week season when all but two or three teams have called it a regular season. Don’t try this at home, if you can avoid it. Another league that’s a little more actively governed has its final set up as the last two weeks of the regular season, and I think it’s generally closer to the rule than the exception for head-to-head leagues to last up until the final day. Few things bother me more than that in our game, partly because my home league has been stuck in this rut forever, partly because it’s so obviously ridiculous.
If your league is like ours, you know that names don’t matter at all right now. Joey Meneses has been carrying my ten-team outfield of Ronald Acuña, Luis Robert and Giancarlo Stanton. Bobby Witt Jr. has been on my bench for a long time while Luis Rengifo captains a shallow-league infield headed for the postseason. Without these guys, I’d be hurting. Every hot-now bat won’t keep it sizzling, but it rarely hurts to rotate some fresh swingers in if your lineups are scuffling. I know this is Fantasy 101 stuff, but I have to remind myself to go ahead and bench some names every year.
Dynasty leagues aren’t all that different. You’ve only got so many days left. If you’re in the hunt, you might as well try the Rodolfo Castros and Nathan Eatons of the world. They may not matter for long, but they matter now while Castro is dropping bombs and Eaton is running wild.
Please, blog, may I have some more? After this weeks FAAB run, there will only be 2.5 weeks left of the MLB season; and anyone who got added to the IL this week should be dropped. Ultimately, it’s crunch time and you should be evaluating everything in the standings (if you play roto). Moreover, it doesn’t matter where you drafted anyone at […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Houston Astros outfielder slash heir to the throne of the Southlands, destroyer of baseballs, Yordan Alvarez went for the hat trick Friday night going 4-for-4 (s/o Wendys!) with three home runs (34, 35, 36) including this 464 footer! That’s the longest shot of Yordy’s career and the three bombs in a single game is a […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Greetings Razzfolk! DO YOU SMELL THAT? It smells like a lot of season ending injuries. Some of them are pretty serious injuries (Alec Mill’s discectomy and Anthony Goses’ Tommy John Surgery), but some of them are because there are only about three weeks left in the regular season. Routine injuries like strained hamstrings might keep […]
Please, blog, may I have some more?Filling in for my guy, Mitch Staniger and I glance at the slate to see Ohtani vs Kirby and it just doesn’t seem right to not send some George Kirby ($8,000) love into the universe. Do we cross streams this evening and play Ohtani/Kirby? I could actually see it, but I never like the win […]
