(The Cards win, the Cards win)1 x 8 = 16. 16 is also the number of runs the Braves will score to eliminate the Cards in the playoffs. I kid. Kinda. No need to keep looking for Mr. Nootbaar. The Caards haas-beens haas been aamaazing, even Harrison Bader (1-for-4 and his 15th homer), perhaps the worst hitter in the major leagues. Haarsh? P to the erhaaps. But look at Harrison Bader’s Statcast. If you don’t at least let out a small chuckle, you’re not 100% what you’re looking at, which is fine. I will explain after the picture:

More like HAHArrison Bader. Woof, dog, take that screenshot to the kennel; it’s time to put her to sleep. His xBA is .229. His exit velocity is bottom twenty, when adding in more guys than even qualify. He has the hard hit percentages of guys who are crossed-eyed and should be out of the league. For 2022 fantasy, Harrison Bader is a decent real world player for defense, but he’s a very bad, er, hitter. Of course! Who cares for the final week? He has three games straight with a homer, and he’s one of the top schmotatoes in the game. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Paul Goldschmidt – 1-for-3 and his 31st homer. Au Shizz!

Ranger Suarez – 9 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 1.45. The Phillies had a Cy Young for the 1st half of the year (Wheeler), and he might’ve been bested by their 2nd half Cy Young (Ranger). Was hundred percent throwing shade at Trevor Bauer six weeks ago, when I said Ranger Suarez would’ve been the Cy Young if he had these two months last year, but now I’m starting to believe it.

Nick Pivetta – 5 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 3 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.52. Was looking at the Streamonator for Pivetta’s next start, and thinking how sad it would be to have my season come down to a Pivetta start, then I thought about how that’s the situation the Red Sox find themselves in and they spend $159 million a year, so that made me feel better.

Giancarlo Stanton – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 34th homer, hitting .277, and his 4th homer in five games, and a rekindling of my nethers that have long been dormant. Don’t leave the nethers dangling without warmth, my sweet Giancarlo.

Brandon Belt – Left yesterday’s game after hurting himself while trying to bunt, which makes total sense in Coors. He hit his 28th and 29th homers on Saturday. Will be going over all the position recaps starting next week, and I may or may not say this then, but Belt is having himself a solid 2019 Mitch Garver year. While they are totally unrelated players, I can’t help feel like anyone who comes out of nowhere to hit 30-ish homers in 100-ish games will also disappear the following year just as fast.

Kevin Gausman – 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 baserunners, 11 Ks, ERA at 2.87. Um, cool, so don’t take this the wrong way, but was he holding back for a random game in Coors? Where was this for the last two months?

Marcus Semien – 0-for-5 and his 43rd homer on Saturday. He tied Davey Johnson with the most homers from a 2nd baseman. Okay, but let’s see Marcus lead a team of coke heads to the World Series. “Hey, Doc, that’s the foul line, man, stop trying to sniff it.” That’s Davey Johnson in 1986.

George Springer – 3-for-4 and his 19th homer, and his 2nd homer in as many games. How many games did Springer even play this year? 72! The Refrigerator of numbers.

Eli Morgan – 6 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, 1 walk, 6 Ks, ERA at 5.27 vs. Lance Lynn – 6 IP, 6 ER, ERA at 2.72. Is there any final outcome to a matchup that better encapsulates H2H playoffs? Eli Morgan, who I believe is mentioned in The Hanukah Song vs. one of the best starters in baseball and that was the outcome. Absolutely terrific and fair.

Shohei Ohtani – 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 10 Ks, ERA at 3.18, 1-for-3, hitting .258. Shohei is the first player since Willie Mays in 1955 to have 45+ HRs, 20+ SBs, 6+ triples. The best pitcher on that 1955 team: Johnny Antonelli who went 14-16/3.33/1.22/143 in 235 1/3 IP. Shohei has a better ERA, WHIP and more strikeouts in over 100 less IP. Shohei Ohtani has broken baseball.

Jarred Kelenic – 2-for-4 and his 14th homer. Can’t imagine I’ll be the only breathing heavy like Sling Blade for Kelenic next year. It’ll just come down to who’s the most Sling Bladiest.

Marco Gonzales – 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 4.00. Final start of the year might be for all the marbles, and even if it’s not, the Streamonator loves it.

Shane McClanahan – 5 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.44. Already want to draft for 2022. Yes, this is a sickness. But I do!

Shane Baz – 5 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 9 Ks, ERA at 1.69. Okay, this offseason I’m gonna need Ryan Yarbrough to change his name to Shane Yarbrough or Ryan Shanebro or some shizz, because I just want to nuzzle me some Rays Shanes.

Wander Franco – 2-for-4, 2 runs and has reached base 41 straight times. He’s 20 years old. The only other player in history to do this at the age of 20 is Frank Robinson, who holds the record at 43 games. Can I rank Wander in the top 20 next year without people thinking I might’ve lost my mind?

Lewin Diaz – 1-for-4 and his 7th homer, hitting .216. Saw Miami’s Diaz homered and I was like, “Tiger Woods fist pump, Isan Diaz homered!” Then I saw it was Lewin, and I was like, “Oh.” Pretty sure I’m the only one in the entire world who had that reaction since Isan is rostered in even less leagues than Lewin. I’m one of a kind in the most uninteresting of ways.

Corey Seager – 2-for-4 and his 11th and 12th homer. Those two are to show his brother, who has 35 homers, how to hit homers, according to their mom.

Trea Turner – 2-for-4 and his 25th homer, hitting .322. Treat Urner is the 7th player in MLB history with 100+ HR and 200+ SB in his first 7 seasons. The seven are: Both Bonds, sexy! Eric Davis, awesome! Hanley Ramirez, great! Cesar Cedeno, cool in his time! Juan Samuel, oh, okay.

Julio Urias – 5 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.01. If this was ten years ago, Urias would’ve easily won the NL Cy Young because of his win total (19), but the nerds have ruined everything! Stop ruining stuff, nerds!

Hans Crouse – 3 IP, 1 ER, as he made his major league debut. His first pitch delivered in the majors was hit for a home run by Cole Tucker. Hans Crouse knows how to please Vanessa Hudgens.

David Bednar – 1 IP, 0 ER, ERA at 2.15, as he was activated from the IL and worked the 7th inning. Hunh, weird. I thought he would go back in as closer, as other websites keep telling people, when it’s clearly not true.

Alex Bregman – 2-for-4 and his 11th homer. Shouldn’t laughed after enduring Cody Belanger all year, but 11 homers from Bregman is truly something.

Dane Dunning – 4 2/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 4.32. Never been as confident about anything as I am saying this year we saw more 4 2/3 IP starts than at any point in MLB history. It’s almost like MLB managers are trying to only throw guys 4 2/3 IP. It’s only one more out and Dunning had allowed only one hit and threw 71 pitches. If a guy can throw 71 pitches, he definitely can throw five more to try to get one more out.

Wily Peralta – 4 2/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.08. At least he threw 100 pitches! Streamonator hates his next start, but it’s against the White Sox, who haven’t covered Wily since Jason Biggs.

Kris Bubic – 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.52. I streamed Bubic and Wily in the same league, because streaming happens in the Wily/Bubic region and I desperately need IP (and didn’t think much of either offense).

Francisco Lindor – 1-for-4 and his 18th homer. You going in on Lindor in 2022? It should be so easy considering his price next year, but I’m dreaming about Willy Adames (2-for-4, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and his 24th homer) and dreading Lindor.

Carlos Carrasco – 4 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 5.73. This offseason “Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks, A Seminar” by Adam Wainwright at the local St. Louis Ramada? Enroll Carrasco!

Triston McKenzie – 2 1/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 4.81. This guy already has so many nicknames — Strong Bean, Stretch Armweak — and now you can Marvel at his comic character name, Da Railing, as in he just keeps derailing, and he’s as skinny as a railing. Soon his teammates can go by The Guardians of Da Railing.

Lucas Giolito – 6 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 3.58. Nice that he finished strong. Why did he throw 100 pitches in a meaningless game vs. the Guardians? Was Lol Russa distracted by the pitcher of Bud?

Kyle Farmer – 1-for-5, 4 RBIs and his 16th homer, hitting near .400 in the last week, and I’m admittedly grasping at straws to find a hot schmotato in the final week, but Farmer seems to be one.

Tyler Stephenson – 3-for-5, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 10th homer, hitting .283. Wanna know how bad I got it? I’m actively excited about drafted Tyler Stephenson in 2022. A late catcher!

Nick Castellanos – 1-for-4, 2 runs and his 32nd homer, hitting .309, and his 3rd homer in the last three games. The Greek God of Hard Contact has received zero MVP consideration (from what I’ve seen). Not sure why, but I’m gonna guess Greek discrimination. Like what stopped the Greek hip-hop group Cyprus Hill from worldwide acclaim with How I Could Just Tzatziki’ll A Man

I watched video of Baz’s 9 punchouts yesterday and his start against Tor. He looks so damn good and poised. If his call up was in June it would have been a huge deal. I wish he was a secret for next year. Instead everone will see him in the playoffs.

Think Freddy Peralta gets another start before playoffs? Looks like he’s projected to start @ LAD. But he’s their #3 starter, so I can’t imagine him starting and even if he does I would think it’ll only be 3 IP or something.

Speaking of the Brewers, they’ve won 94 times this year. The pitcher leading the team in W’s is Brent Suter and his 1 GS. Is this a 2020 impact or an MLB trend (6 man rotation and limits on times through the batting line up)?

Only three 200 inning pitchers in MLB this year so far (Wheeler, Alcantara, Wainwright). Buehler likely gets there with his start this week (195.7 IP). But that should be about it for 200 inning guys this season.

Raise your hand if you had Wainwright pitching 200 innings of 3.05 ERA, 1.04 WHIP baseball this season.

Agree on Freddy…

Yeah, probably both. How does the trend impact our game? Draft value? Cats? Long relievers? I’m a believer in waiting for SPs, just feels like this shift will have actionable fantasy opportunities. In one league I waited to draft my first SP, Paddock in the 10th followed by May, Lamet, and Gonsolin in the next few rounds – haha! Then redeemed myself with Ray and Stroman and grabbed Cease off waivers early.

Thanks for all your work this year! Looking forward to the year-end recaps and preps heading into 2022!

Belt has been great for the past two months now! What did Belt do to piss of Gene the SF Genie? He’ll be missed in my 12 team H2H championship this week!

Who’s the replacement:
Adolis (vs LAA and Cle in Tex) – is he still a thing? Guess in Tex could make him so…
K Ruiz (@ Col for part of the week) – schmotato?
Adames (@ StL and @ LAD) – dropped him for Belt a while back, so it would complete the circle.
Soler (Vs Phil and NYM) – when did he become a leadoff hitter?
Rodgers (vs Was and @ Ari)
Kelenic (vs Oak and vs LAA) – do I have the cajones?
Or hold and see what happens since I have Cron to fill in until a player is on a bye

C – Haase
1B – Belt/Cron
2B – Jazz
3B – Devers
SS – Manny
OF – Yordan, Mountcastle, Sanchez
UT – Mondesi, Buxton

Yeah Walker has been a disaster lately. Another question – how many of these starters scheduled to pitch on the last two days of the season (Sat/Sun) do you think will actualy pitch?

Gausman, Webb (vs SD)
Darvish (vs SF)
Bassitt (vs HOU)
Urias (vs MIL)
Cease (vs DET)

Maybe LA lets Urias try for win #20 but I could see SF and the WSox going with bullpen games ahead of the post season.

Where do I send your 10% commission ??

Your best advice: hold off on drafting starting pitching.
I had Woodruff as a keeper, but my staff also included:
Pablo Lopez (Round 7, 100 overall)
Trevor Rogers (15, 228)
Eovaldi (17, 260)
DeSclafani (18, 285)
Led me to #1 in ERA & tied for #1 in WHIP

You the best !

Grey,

may be my final question for you this year. First, I want to thank you for all you do. Invaluable.

I need points from a pitcher this week. That’s it – points! You’d think a two-starter would be the way to go, but I haven’t had much luck the last two weeks with those off the waiver wire (Miley -29; McKenzie -22.)

Who’s the best (safest) path to solid/most points this week? Rank your top three please and thanks again!

Marquez (WAS; @ AZ)
Rogers (@NYM; PHI)
Nola (@Atl)

5×5 OBP. Saves + Holds

Fighting to keep first. Guy has dominated pitching categories, I’ve dominated hitting. I have 15 innings left (he has 25 left) and we are tied in K’s.

I have:
Gausman vs. SD (12.4)
McClanahan @NYY (-5.5) feels like a sit although he’s been awesome.
Joe Ryan DET (12.4) Going to start him the last day but this one is Tuesday
Lance Lynn DET (28.7)

Do I take a chance to start any of them or just go with relievers for the next 10-11 innings before saving a few innings to make sure I can get to the last day?

Wrapped up a super disappointing 2-week head-to-head championship round for a 2nd place finish. Lindor and Betts combined for 1 HR, 6 RBI, 10 Runs, and 1 SB for the matchup. Totally what I paid for to start the year. Woof.

Way to soon to be looking ahead to next year’s auction, but keep 10, $260 budget, 10 player minor league roster.
C
1B Matt Olson $18
2B Nick Madrigal ML
3b Moncada $18
SS Bobby Witt JR ML
OF Eloy $7
UTIL Pete Alonso $3
UTIL VLAD JR $7
SP1 Snell $27
SP2 Giolito $5
SP 3 Cease $7
SP 4 Urias $13

SP Josiah Gray ML
SP Tanner Houck ML
SP Grayson Rodriguez ML

With 1 spots left, would you keep Trout for $63? Sounds crazy I know, but it would leave me with $92 left in the draft budget, but only have 9 spots left to fill, needing mostly low-cost players. With the low cost on some top players I already have and following your draft strategy of not spend big $$ on catchers and closers, I’m really looking to get a couple of mid rotation guys, OF 3, and utility players that can fill in for off days.

I need to start 4 SP, 2 Pitchers with RP eligibility and 1 additional pitcher for 7 total arms. My opponent is rolling with 7 starters and no relievers and has no 2 starters and I’ve included their matchups:

Alcantara PHI
Manoah BAL
Urias MIL
F. Peralta @LAD
Ynoa NYM
R. Suarez @MIA
Berrios NYY

Here are my arms including their matchups and $ values for the week. Although he isn’t using RPs I have good RPs and a few 2 start pitchers so I can steal saves and maybe ratios while still having a lot of SP volume.

Would are the 2 SITS below?:

Max Scherzer SD $18.1
Dylan Cease DET $11.5
Logan Webb ARI, SD $23.4
Flexen OAK, LAA $17.9
Mikolas MIL (not sure if 2 start anymore but would be CHC) $6.2
Romano NYY, BAL $15.8
Iglesias @TEX, @SEA $10.8
Gallegos MIL, CHC $9.5
Gausman SD $6.8

Thanks!

Happy Monday.

Do you think Jeimer Candelario is someone who takes another step forward next year or is this it? I like to think that extra base hits are a precursor to future HR power, and his 42 doubles this year stand out….plus a lot of those doubles look to be right at the wall too (according to his hit chart on Baseball Savant).

Have you looked at Alex Cobb’s overall numbers? They’re sneaky good. An ERA well under 4, more than 9 k per inning and a 0.3 HR/9. He’ll be an UFA. I’m starting to get interested. Am I alone on Cobb Island?

Is Alzolay doing anything different now? I think he’s added a new pitch, but he looked really good in relief yesterday. Not sure how sustainable he is over time, but it was a good outing yesterday at least.

Grey, your moustache is sleek and furry! I know this is probably an out there question, but I’m going to need to pick this offseason between Ranger Suarez and Lucas Giolito as a keeper- am I crazy for considering Suarez?

Bader is all that you say, but you have to give him credit for being able to rush around the country, change uniforms, and play for the Rox as Garrett hampson!!

No one can convince me they’re not the same player!

Now we know why ‘ol Bud was so weird in playing Hampson. Can’t play him when he’s playing for the Cards as his alter ego!

Please don’t rank Wander in the Top 20 and hype him up – part of me is starting to believe in a Grey jinx (i.e. Travis Shaw, Kyle Lewis)

Are we assuming that belt is going to be useless this week? Drop for a. Garcia, pollock, or Hilliard? Thanks!

Getting back to Lynn, his numbers look good for the season with a shiny 2.72 era and 1.07 whip. But if you go under the hood, he hasn’t been very good since July 30 (9 starts). He has a 4.47 era over that period and only 2 qs. The last time he was credited with a win was July 25 and his era was 1.91 then.

Surprisingly, Aaron Nola over his last 9 starts has pitched the same amount of innings as the Lynn sample, 48 1/3, and has only given up 3 more earned runs but has has two wins and 10 more K.

Lynn has been meh over for nearly 2 months.

Grey!!!!

Much anticipated, much appreciated, awesome!

a. Am with you on Tyler. He’s a 2016 1st round draft pick, they love him, he’s great on defense and made for GABC.

b. Stack and pack all your Rox and WAS players.

c. Norm MacDonald quote of the day for September 27, 2021

‘A truck full of chickens overturned on the Long Island Expressway yesterday. Hundreds of chickens crossed the road but nobody’s able to figure out why.’

d. Marx Brothers quote of the day for September 27, 2021

Mrs. Claypool: ‘It’s rather difficult to believe that when I find you dining with another woman.’

Otis B. Driftwood: ‘That woman? Do you know why I sat with her? Because she reminded me of you.’

[right after Driftwood told her he loves her]

Mrs. Claypool=Margaret Dumont; Otis B. Driftwood=Groucho

That last start by Lynn was awful. Even more awful is their team defense. Lynn had two infield hits and got 5 ground balls in the 5th inning only to allow 4 hits and 3 earned runs in the inning. Their defense coupled with the dinosaur that is managing this team will certainly accelerate their exit out of the playoffs in the first round. I hate to say it because I’m a Sox fan, but it will happen. If those two key factors don’t do it, then their bridge to hendricks will collapse.

STL and 16 games in a row is even more remarkable, i.e., disturbing considering they have Happ and Lester in their rotation. All else being equal or ceteris paribus if I was trying to sound smart, the maximum amount of games they should ever be able to win in a row is about 3 assuming they are using a 5-man rotation during this streak.

my sons pitching coach here in Chicago is Jim Paduch who is the Rays single A pitching coach (lives here from October to March). For the past three years he’s been using video of Baz to help teach lessons (good and bad) and says the dude is legit based on his growth in control/command
