The Mariner bullpen has basically been that round-up ride at your local carnival.  It doesn’t look that bad until it totally messes with your vertigo and you end up spewing up kettle corn and other assorted goods for two hours there after.  Last year, the Mariners bullpen had a 2.60 ERA, good for tops in the MLB.  They also saved 51 games to only 11 blown saves.  They were all comfy and coozy like footed pajamas last year, and basically everyone could rely on the decent value of return from drafting Fernando Rodney.  Then the year changes to five and the ship went askew.  Their bullpen ERA is over 4.30 and are on pace to accumulate 45 saves, and, to date, have already blown 18 saves (behind only three other teams for worst).  So let’s just run down the year so far: Rodney was the closer, then he wasn’t the closer, Carson Smith took over, and now it seems as though they are reverting back to 2012 in hopes that Tom Wilhelmsen can right the ship of battered and injured bullpen dreams.  Stick around for some tid-bits and bullpen ranks…

  • Be nervous if you are a Greg Holland owner and not a Wade Davis cuffer.  Holland’s cranky arm isn’y going to get better by rubbing dirt on it.  ROS saves prediction: Davis 8, Holland 2.
  • Has Brad Boxberger had the quietest 30 save season ever or what?
  • It is funny to think about Hector Rondon, but take this on.  He didn’t get a save opportunity for 35 games as he was replaced as the Cubs closer.  He is on pace to have more saves than both Holland and Chapman.  Man I love the closer carousel.
  • Lots of shuffling around, and the DonkeyCorn group is a tight battle with it being a close enough from 15-22, all having their say in some way shape or form.

Donkeycorns

Imagine you’re following a donkey, who’s wearing a wool cap, through a desert for 1700 miles. Why are you following a donkey? Because he promises you something wonderful and you just need to trust him. Does the donkey talk? Yes. Yes, he does talk. Employed

These guys are the men that make the save market go round. They punch in, punch out. Have the job, no real threat to speak of, and are basically just there to collect great benny’s so they can take care of their crippled brother. Who is only really crippled because he is scared of the sun.

Brain Freezes

I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples, bananas and Carlos Marmol– Wait, he just gave up 12 earned runs and hit Castro in the head with a pick-off throw. Brain freeze! Make it stop! Use the following closers at your own risk.

29. Tom Wilhelmsen – (Carson Smith, Logan kensing)

I am currently rostering both C.Smith and S.Doolittle although Doolittle is still in my DL slot. Is it time to drop Smith and activate Doolittle? Or should i drop them both and grab Tazawa.

@JJ: Tazawa has the gig where as the other two are dawdling along as maybe closers with not much hope on falling teams. You have my blessing to grab Tazawa its about 6 of one half a dozen of another.

    Hey buddy

Would you roster Wilhelmsen in a 8 team svs/holds league?

Could drop Aj Ramos, nate Jones or strop?

    Thanks

@Slimbo: I would stick with what you got

Earned a first round bye so I really only have 2 weeks (9/14-9/27) I have to worry about ROS. I have 3 Nats SP’s which is good because they have Philly for 6 games and the Marlins for 4 games during my playoffs. But I also own Giles & Ramos which is bad for the same reason. There are 3 options on the waiver wire. Wade Davis is there but I also have 2 SP’s from on the Indians.

So….given my situation and the schedules shown below (remember, especially in Doolittle’s case, these games are 3 weeks away) for the following closers. Pick pick 2 out of 5 :

    Doolittle 13 games ([email protected],[email protected],3vTEX,3vSF)
    Wade Davis 13 games ([email protected],[email protected],3vSEA,3CLE)
    Rondon 13 games ([email protected], 3vKC, 4vCHW, 3vMIN)
Ramos 13 games ([email protected], [email protected], 3vPHI, 3vATL)
Giles 12 games (3vWAS, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected])

@Johnny: Ramos and Giles, I dont trust Doolittle and his schedule is on the rougher side. Davis is Davis but no guarantee he gets every save chance if Holland Healthy. Rondon is in the lower tier of the league for savedom.

      • Crapshoot Kershaw says:
        (link)

@Smokey: rondon is on lower tier of expected saves even though he’s on the pace he’s on without being closer for 35 days? is this due to the schedule here?

Brain Freeze from Bruce Rondon today, or Kazaam.

@Scott: inning was ehh. error, caught stealing, walk, 2 weaker looking singles and a sac fly. Not awful think he just got turned on his head by the error, though that wasn’t the one that scored.

    Today’s KC stats:
    Wade Davis: 1 IP (8th), 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K
    Greg Holland: 1 IP (9th), 3 H (2 2B, 1 1B), 2 ER, 1 K

Methinks Holland’s shoulder is still cranky and Davis should be 100% owned in all formats at least until Holland proves to be healthy. Best case you get a top 5 closer, worst case a lights out ratio-helper.

What is your percentage guesstimate that jj Hoover closes next year ?

      @Luvdarooks: small maybe 10%

@Scott: Jefress first but it’s a complete guess. I think they see what he has and Knebel will maybe get a look see

    Thanks Smokey!
If you can only grab one KRod backup, who you grabbing out of Smith and Jeffress?

@LittleJoeyCora: I think they see what Jeffress has adn don’t be surprised if Knebel gets a nibble either. But all three guys could honestly see a chance. If K-Rod goes
