Saw Brice Matthews was called up by the Astros, ya know, their sexy hitting shortstop prospect and I was like, “Okay, what happened to Jeremy Pena?” But I didn’t see any negative updates on Pena. Astros said he’s fine, I could check on him myself. His right leg is in that box over there, his ankle is in that drawer, his right arm is in the car, his hand in the glove compartment, his nose — how’d he lose his nose? Was it a game of Got Cha Nose with an uncle that went wrong? — well, that’s in the fridge and his left arm is on ice, in the freezer. Overall, Pena is great! The reason why we care is Matthews looks terrific, .283/.400/.476 with 10 homers, 39 RBIs and 25 steals at Triple-A in 73 games. Itch said two weeks ago, “Matthews is on the brink of a big league debut and looking great as he waits, slashing .396/.484/.698 with three home runs over his last 13 games. I’d like to push Grey off a brink of something.” What? Could see adding Matthews anywhere you need speed, but he could struggle for average (30.2% K% in Triple-A) and projections say he’ll hit .210. The best reading of this playing time shituation is Altuve back to LF, Smith to RF, Pena to short and Matthews to 2nd base. Oh, and Yordan’s hand, the good one, to on top of the Gatorade bucket to wave to fans. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Pete Crow-Armstrong – 3-for-4, 3 runs and his 24th and 25th homer. Next week my top 100 for the 2nd half will be released (today on Patreon!) and PCA is one of the easiest guys to rank, because I’ve been saying since the 2nd week of the season he’s a top 20 guy. It’s only how high to push him above that. PCA or Juan Soto? PCA of Lindor? PCA or Corbin Carroll? That’s where he’s at, and it’s glorious.
Colin Rea – 7 IP, 1 ER,, 5 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.91. Ever hear Calling All Angels while shopping at the Pottery Barn and starting singing it to Colin Rea? No? Sounds like you’re weird. Guess you can Streamonator Rea, but his perfs are grotesque.
Chris Paddack – 6 IP, 6 ER, ERA at 4.95. Sometimes I think back at how great Paddack’s 2019 season was and think I dreamt the whole thing, but in my dream I’m writing about fantasy baseball, so it doesn’t seem like a dream, but then again Sydney Sweeney is reading what I wrote and saying, “He’s so smart, haha, and handsome,” then I pull back further and Sydney Sweeney is reading it her father, a balding 65-year-old man, and petting a dog named Handsome. Is this a dream or not? God damn it!
Kody Clemens – 1-for-3 and his 11th homer, and 2nd homer in three games, though not the Twins’ last three games because: Baldelli. Also, Clemens won’t be in this afternoon’s Buy column because: Baldelli. Everything awful: Baldelli.
Spencer Steer – 1-for-4 and his 11th homer. On the 30-day Player Rater, it has the stats for every player for the last month. Steer has seven homers in that time, same number as Acuña, and one more than everyone’s current favorite, George Springer. (And because I was there, Byron Buxton has 10 homers with seven steals, and is the best outfielder for the last month.)
Nick Lodolo – 6 IP, 0 ER, 3 hits, zero walks, 4 Ks, ERA at 3.38. He’s become a pitcher this year, instead of a thrower, and looks lined up for a huge step forward next year, as he becomes a perennial top 20 starter. He’s got the makings of a 2026 sleeper. “Don’t let him put that curse on you!” That’s 2025 sleeper Brandon Pfaadt.
Giancarlo Stanton – 1-for-1, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer, 2nd homer in three games. Pound for pound the best source of power and only power? I think maybe, but don’t take my word for it, ask my pillow I drew a face on that I named Ginacarlo.
Marcus Stroman – 5 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 6.66. If only the Devil Rays were still around.
Bryan Woo – 7 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 2 hits, 2 walks, 5 Ks, ERA at 2.75. Went from a no-hitter into the 7th to a no decision. Woo-hoo to boo-hoo pretty quickly.
Jorge Polanco – 1-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 14th homer, 2nd homer in two games. Think he’s rostered in too many leagues for an official hot schmotato alert, but here’s an unofficial one.
Andres Munoz – 1 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 1.54, and 6th blown save, but, before this, he was a witch teat away from having an ERA under 1. Supposedly, he was tipping his slider, which the Yankees picked up on. Crazy how quickly MLB hitters pick up on tipping.
Willson Contreras – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 12th homer, hitting .254. Which Contreras brother is higher on the Player Rater? Any guesses? If you guessed William, you’re not paying attention. There will be no three-peat for William at the top of the Player Rater for catchers. Even without Dumper, he’d miss out there, as he’s currently below Kirk with no beaming up in sight.
Miles Mikolas – 5 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.94. He came up an out short of a Quality Start because he hates nerds who play in those leagues. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger!
Gunnar Henderson – 4-for-6, 2 RBIs and his 11th homer, a pinch-hit homer in Game 1. Thank God this was a doubleheader, because there was no way I was taking him out my fantasy lineup even though he was rested in the first game. I’m like a beaten dog, flinching at things that aren’t even there.
Jordan Westburg – 2-for-8, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 10th homer. He’s around 100th overall on the 30-day Player Rater. A bit meh, around top 12 overall for 2nd basemen in that timeframe. In retrospect, we should’ve got out on all our Orioles player shares in April. It was hard to see it in April, and no way to see it in March.
Charlie Morton – 6 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 5.18. His ERA’s been 3.05 since April 27th. Call me Chazz Facepalminteri that I’m over here struggling to make something work with some lesser schmohawks.
Tomoyuki Sugano – 6 IP, 3 ER, 7 baserunners, 2 Ks, ERA at 4.44. Watched him come off the mound after the 6th, and he tipped his hat and my first thought was, “Is that sarcastic?” He was fine yesterday, but not Hat Tipping Fine.
Luisangel Acuña – 0-for-3 as he was recalled. If Ronald is Tildaddy, Luisangel is Tilhe’stradedthere’snoroomtoplay. Or Tilhe’straded for short.
David Peterson – 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 hits, zero walks, 6 Ks, ERA at 3.06. A Man Da. Peterson beating the O’s like they’re Ronald Miller when he was still a nerd. Streamonator also liked this start, and I’d be careful with Peterson, as his stats are a little meh.
Fernando Tatis Jr. – 2-for-4 and his 16th homer. Fun the Jewels! Fun the Jewels fast! Fun the Jewels strong!
Manny Machado – 3-for-5 and his 16th homer, hitting .291. Macho, macho Machado!
Eduardo Rodriguez – 4 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 5.94. For what it’s Wuertz, I don’t ignore starts in the roundup. If a guy is excellent and pitches meh, then there’s not much to say and if a guy is bad and pitches bad, there’s not much to say. With that said, EdRod is bad. Randy Vazquez (4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.80) is bad.
Adolis Garcia – 2-for-5, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 11th homer, hitting .231. Sad how far he’s fallen in one year. A drop-off for a hitter only Michael Harris II can truly appreciate.
Taylor Ward – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 21st homer, hitting .230, but around .330 in July and [eyeballing it] I want to say around .250 since April. Not bad at all (if I squinted and added up in my head anywhere remotely correct).
Zach Neto – 3-for-5, 2 runs and his 14th homer, hitting .273. On pace for a 25/25 season, and he missed three weeks of the season. Not too shabby!
Tyler Soderstrom – 3-for-5, 4 RBIs and his 16th homer. Soder Pop Popinski!
Nick Kurtz – 1-for-3, 2 runs and his 15th homer, hitting .246. I want to draft Kurtz for 2026 already.
Jurickson Profar – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer. After the game in SacTown, Profar said, “Bing Bong Stadium is better than taking PEDs. Balls be binging and/or bonging.”
Ozzie Albies – 1-for-4 and his 7th homer, his 2nd homer since May 4th. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA–breathe, Grey! God damn it! We’re losing him!–HAHAHAHAHAHAHA–I keel over, bye-bye.
Spencer Strider – 6 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 8 baserunners, 11 Ks, ERA at 3.94. Ya know what’s kinda interesting (not really)? Strider lost 2024 to surgery, but what was his ERA in 2023? Surely, it was below 3.00, right? It was 3.86 and don’t call me Shirley.
Junior Caminero – 1-for-4 and his 23rd homer, 2nd homer in two games, and locked and loaded for the Home Run Derby, where I’m sure he’ll ruin his swing and become Grounder Henderson on the other side of the break because I can’t have nice things.
Ha-Seong Kim – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. He won’t be in this afternoon’s Buy column, but, if he’s available, I like the flyer for speed and a bit of power and maybe average and maybe runs and maybe, well, you know.
Taj Bradley – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 4.60 vs. Walker Buehler – 6 IP, 3 ER, 8 baserunners, 2 Ks, ERA at 6.12. This was a matchup of two guys who seem very interesting in theory, then you get them on your team and you’re like, “I should’ve named my fantasy team, In Theory.”
Bryan Baker – 1 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 4.12, as the O’s traded him to the Rays for draft picks. “O’s are building a minor league dynasty that will be the envy of teams for years to come” — someone in 2021. Of course the O’s are selling; they came into the season with Charlie Morton as their number two, but still, they seemed like a team with so much promise. All wasted away now like sands in an hourglass, so are the days of our lives.
THERE’S A NEW POST FOR FOLLOWUPS FOR ME
Would you start McCullers today vs Texas
Would you start L Castillo vs Detroit
Westburg for Gilbert fair considering Gilbert’s injury concern and his performance since he came of IL?
Better bulk today Priester vs Nats (Parker) or Boyle at Sawx (Dobbins)?
Priester
Hi Grey,
12 team roto redraft 5×5 OBP
Need HR, runs, RBI.
Drop Schanuel for any of the following or hold?
Steer
Romy
Josh Smith
Burger
Manzardo
Burleson
Schmitt
Thanks in advance.
Steer
Sonny or Peralta ROS?
Sonny
With Bregman coming back, I was interested to see how his production compared with the replacement I used in Barger.
*I play 6×6 with OPS, but got lazy and decided I didn’t want to calc the slugging to get the OPS of the combined stats.
I hear ya
Today is Kyle Stowers and Connor Norby’s Revenge day vs the Orioles. Bet they both take Kremer Deep….didn’t just say that?
That feels right on
I’m hoping Trevor Rogers gets the revenge on Saturday
Is it easier to get revenge on Miami or Baltimore? Does it matter?
Bal is 42-50 and 5th in the AL East…what an embarrassment. Go Fish!
An age old question… who would you prefer over the next three years – Harper or Duran? 12 team mixed keeper league
Duran
The Mets need a Jarren Duran energy shot
Ha
Hello Grey! Excellent stuff as usual. You have been particularly witty this season, and even more so recently. I love the reads. Ok, some comments:
Drafted PCA in Yahoo 12 Team H2H Keeper League thanks to you, so awesome call. Acuna (3rd) and PCA (10th) are my 2 Keepers as of now. Team kinda sux, but I will take those for sure.
Was watching Sox – Rays last night and I had to laugh at Cash and his freakin’ micromanaging move of lifting Taj after 88 pitches only to have his newly found gem Baker shart all over himself. I am no Sox fan, but I love when that happens to dem guys.
Your boy Stanton helped the Yanks do something last night I never thought they would do – come back from being no hit and then down 5-0 for the W! Great game!
Finally, I meant to message on the weekend when your Kevin from ESPN bits involved fireworks in the keister. They are normally very funny, but those were absolute gems!
Thanks for all you do and have a nice weekend!
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Which side? Fair?
L Castillo, Chapman and Butler for DeGrom and Duran.
deGrom
Hi Grey,
1.What is your thoughts on picking up Zach Eflin?
2. How would you rank Eflin?
Thanks!!
1. Meh
2. Around top 100 starter
Thanks!!
No problem
5.95 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 6.1 K/9…how should anyone rank Eflin? [Larry David voice]: Pretty-pretty-pretty-bad.
Would you add Jac C. over Robert jr. or Arozarena
Thank you
Over Luis
You bulkin’ Boyle in Fenway tonight?
This Slimcompoop is!
Boyle bulkers of the world unite!
I like what you’re selling, Fred Garvin…count me in.
I think I might try it
Hello, my name is Bard, and I’ve been bulking for the past four or five years. But recently it’s gotten out of hand …
Boyle’s gonna Yarb
Ronny Enriquez’s last five games: W, SV, SV, SV, W.
Yesterday he’s brought in to pitch the 6th inning with the Marlins down by 6 runs?!
Breath Rice. Just breath.
I wouldn’t think much of it. He hadn’t pitched in 5 days. Struck out the side, which was nice.
Haha, I know, I have him
What’s good Grey! The Airplane and Soda Popinski references made me think of when I was a kid and that’s basically all I did during the summer, watch movies and play Nintendo:) Simpler times (007-373-5963).
Anythehoo…having a cup of coffee with Colson Montgomery at shortstop for the time being. Assuming you would drop him for Brice Matthews? Samesies? Happy Friday and hi to Ted.
Soderstrom jacks one…the Jumbotron should put up the pre-fight clip of Soda Popinski mocking/laughing Little Mac. Fun tidbit, the Punch Out character was originally going to be called Vodka Drunkenski…but…
Ted says hi! Yeah, I’d try Matthews
Gracias!
No problemo
Drop Nico Hoerner for Chandler Simpson? In roto league without bench spots.
Sure
12 team redraft h/h points
Which side
Soto/Riley
Acuna/Ma Garcia (KC )
Soto
Hi Grey!
Think it’s okay to start Senga tonight @KC? My instinct is to wait and see.
Seems fine to me, but if you want to wait, go for it
Senga’s ERA is 1.47, K/inning, and KC’s offense is ‘meh’. Sold.
Your favorite 3 SS ROS pts league?
Adames, Baez, Hoerner, Neto, Story, Pena, Perdomo
Neto, Pena, Story
Speaking of Baez – I still can’t believe he’s starting the All-Star Game. Detroit fans, come on now…you made Al Kaline roll over in his grave (g-d rest his soul).
Start or sit Rodon at home vs the Cubs tonight?
Start
Happy Friday Grey-
OBP league, need a 3B: Royce Lewis or Cam Smith? Close?
Smith
That reminds me, whatever happened to Royce Lewis?
Royce Lewis, whatever happened there.
HAHA
An homage to one of my fav lines in one of your write ups.
Haha, thanks!
he was my answer the other day in Immaculate Grid Twins 3B. About 0.2% picked him
Haha, Cristian Guzman!
Philosophical All Star Break Question:
We have Albies in 2 leagues and Harris in one. They are untradeable. Replacements are guys like Joey Ortiz, Nick Allen and Dubon (for Albies) and Dane Meyers, Nolan Jones and Marsh (for Harris). In other words, bench and platoon type guys. Do I cut them and just try to seek out the best available after the break, or do I ride with them?
Both are in weekly leagues (one 15 team and one 12 team)
Thanks as usual.
Can cut Harris, I wouldn’t cut Albies immediately after he hits a homer, see if maybe that gets him hot
Morning & Happy Free Slurpee Day (& National French Fry Day)!!
I currently have Emmet Sheehan, but it looks like he’s just gonna piggyback Ohtani over the weekend.
Max Scherzer is available for today’s start @ ATH.
you cutting Sheehan for Scherzer?
thank you,
Yay!
I’d want Sheehan
see, that’s why you get paid the big bucks! Thank you!
On another note, I’m rolling with a single bench bat in Heliot Ramos in 1 league but he’d been… not good over the past 30 days, even worse over the last 1-2 weeks.
You still holding or trading in for someone like:
thanks as always!!
Hold
Morning Grey,
What side would you prefer ROS? Format: yahoo h2h points, 10 man
1: Chase Burns + Chris Sale
2: Dylan Cease.
Thanks as always.
1
Hi Grey,
I have Yandy, Aranda and Kurtz in an OBP league. Which 2 would you keep out them?
Not Aranda
streamers take note…joe boyle bulk day! so excited. he’ll probably get mauled.
Let’s go! Tho, seriously, maybe I pick him up
I was talkin’ to Ma, Dad.
Hahahaha
Brice or Caleb?
Caleb
Check your rear view mirror. I’m right behind you in the draft chimps.
Heard Skenes say on the radio he’a as excited to watch Irish slugger O’Cruz in the derby as he is to pitch in the AS game. Apparenty his BP is quite a show.
Haha, I lost Bregman, Schwellenbach, Reynaldo Lopez, Dylan Crews, and (!!!) Christian Moore, that I’m even in this is a miracle
here’s a guy with a lot of excuses!
I didn’t even mention Jarred Kelenic!
that one stings
i have come to love my janky pitching staff in that league. duck tape and bailing wire job. weirdly, i’m 3rd in era and second to last in whip.
Haha, that sounds like a disasterclass waiting to happen
my pitching staff is all the sparking wires hanging from the ceiling of the Milenium Falcon.
HAHAHA, I still have my ace Dylan Cease!
i get to look at Ladies Love on my bench for the rest of the year. woot!
HAHA
Yours? Mine is dreadful.
6 blown saves for Munoz definitely didn’t sound right. I had to check and 2 blown saves were letting the ghost runner score in extras to tie it up and then another was a conventional unearned run. So yep, 6 but only 3 legit ones.
Gotcha
I need a 2nd opinion on Happ. I’m in first so can afford to hold, but he’s bumming me out. He’s also in my UTIL, so I can literally grab anyone for him. Top options on the wire are Soderstrom, Lowe, Abreu, Semien, and a sea(mien) of others. 10 team, 6×6 H2H (Hits and OBP instead of AVG). Gratze!
Semien’s been solid
Agree Dennis…I watch all the Cubs games, you’re not taking a big risk jettisoning Happ for Semien
Happ only hits against the Reds, Pirates, and when the wind is blowing straight out at Wrigley
Sweet picture of Murph, great guy
Thanks Grey and SweetLou! Dale Murphy was my favorite player growing up!
Trade Grant Taylor for Brice Matthews? 12 team dynasty 5×5… guy made the offer this morning thank you!
Sure
Question for you. If the Rangers are gonna take Corey Seager out of every game, why not just DH him. 9-0 after 5 and he’s out already. If they’re so worried about him getting hurt, what is the point of having him play the field at all. Let the guy DH and get those AB’s because this version of Seager is an elite hitter.
I don’t know, I hear ya
Flaherity or Baz ROS?
Flaherty
Ian Crapp is 3 for his last 47…I thought the better hitters were supposed to hit at the topmost…Jed Hoyer severely overvalues this schmohawk, big mistake
Ha
He’s killing me in one league…
I’m 10+ steals behind the team in front of me, going to start to punt the category
Would you move Witt Jr for Ketel in that case ? HR/RBI/Av/Runs are my chances to gain points
Keegan, certainly wait for Grey’s opinion, but I would hold Witt. Who’s to say Marte outpaces him any of the HR/RBI/R categories moving forwards…and Witt will most likely beat him in AVG.
Exactly, Zod! Agree
No
Kyle Bradish is available would you drop any of these pitchers to stash Bradish?
Trevor Rogers
Reese Olson
Emmett Sheehan
Or Joe Boyle
THANKS!
No
Michael Harris or Friedl rest of way?
Friedl
Grey looking to add some offense in the second half and give up some of my pitching
Would Rooker for my Joe Ryan be appropriate ? Or should I aim higher
Works for me
O’s window wasn’t open very long
Gots to have that SPing
They needed to acquire some
12 team redraft h/h points Which
ROS ..
Westburg or Hoerner
Westburg
12 team redraft h/h points
Which side
H Ramos
Friedl ( on bench getting ready to drop him )
A Riley
Or
Mai Garcia ( KC )
R Greene
Greene
Tomorrow would you rather start
Bibee at CHW
Gallen at LAA
Bibee
Roman Anthony or Bryce?
Harper
I meant Brice, not Harper. Sorry, autocorrect
Roman
Love the “Can’t Buy Me Love” reference! Some days you’re a Ronald, other days you’re a Ronny.
Haha
Thoughts on Pham and his new contacts? He is hitting everything like his comp in his Fantasy Football League the last few weeks. With little to no ownership. He’s at 0.7% in my ESPN league after I picked him up. Or is he hitting now to just get off that team?
Can’t tell if you’re serious, he worse than Taylor Walls on the 7 day player rater
From 2 days ago :
Tommy Pham went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored on Wednesday against the Royals.
Armed with his new contact prescription, Pham is one of the hottest hitters in baseball. Three more hits here gives him a .337/.394/.478 over his last 30 games and there are no signs of him slowing down. The Pirates have bumped him up to the lead-off spot during this hot streak and he should be productive there until he’s (likely) traded to a contender later this month.
He’s hitting .438 last 7 days. Contacts changed 6/22.
Ah, gotcha, okay, well, hopefully wherever he’s traded to he keeps playing and doesn’t become a platoon OF
Hey Grey! So I traded Bregman and J Pena for Skenes and Stott. A lot to give up for an ace… that said, Bregman was expendable since Kurtz has taken off, and my rotation is basically Yamamoto and Eovaldi and pray for rain…
Child, please. Your league needs a commish.
Cool
Kim
Garcia Jr
Stott
Matthews
Which two stay?
Much appreciated
Brice and Kim
Keeper league
Best Pickup Overall:
Beck, Muncy A’s, Romy, Kim Rays, Norby, Meadows, Toglia.
Do you feel especially good about any of them?
Muncy
Drop Cowser for Kim?
Meh
I finally dropped Albies in a league where I am down near the bottom anyway. Then I foolishly went and checked the draft to see I could have taken Acuna or Abrams in the 3rd round instead of Ozzie.
Ouch
Ward can be tough to own with some very cold months:
2024 April/March .273 / 7 HR
2024 May .261 / 4 HR
2024 June .181 / 3 HR
2024 July .174 / 2 HR
2024 August .283 / 2 HR
2024 Sept/Oct .286 / 7 HR
2025 April/March .189 / 6 HR
2025 May .255 / 10 HR
2025 June .204 / 4 HR
2025 July .342 / 1 HR
And he’s hit .249 since April. I suppose some might say that’s “around .250.”
Nailed it!
For a second I thought you meant tempertaure and I was trying to think if July was cold…I need more coffee!
Ha Ha!
Westburg is the 12th hitter on the 7-day Rater, though.
That’s true
Grey!!!!
Awesome!!
Have a nice weekend!!
Rodney Dangerfield quote of the day for July 11, 2025
Kids these days, no respect. For Christmas I bought my son a BB gun and for me he bought a sweater with a bullseye on the back.
Cheers,
Ante
Yooooooo!!!!! Nonstop comedy!
Thanks!
Roman or Josh Lowe rest of the way?
Lowe
7474505B, do you get all of Lowe…or do you have to select a specific body part that’s going to stay healthy ROS?
ankles down
Haha…I’d wager one of those even doesn’t even make it…
Haha
Kurtz went without a home run in his first 16 games.
Since hitting his first home run on May 13, he has 15 home runs and 35 RBIs over his last 39 games, projecting to a 162-game pace of 62 home runs and 145 RBIs.
Since May 13, only Raleigh, Judge, Ohtani, Marte, Suárez, and Caminero have hit more home runs.
Kurtz missed 14 games during this span due to a hip injury.
Colonel Kurtz doesn’t look overmatched at all.
Nice!
