I’m a big fan of the everyman. I consider myself the everyman. I’m every man’s everyman. A pioneer of normcore. Track pants and a blinking light on my car’s dashboard that either means my seatbelt isn’t on or I need oil. That is me. What better way to elevate the Everyman Culture than to take part in a tourney where no one is smarter than anyone else. Enter the RazzSlam, a Best Ball tourney. Every everyman likely knows what a Best Ball league is, but, if you don’t, it’s when you draft a team and the computer manages it for you by choosing who are your best players, and you get those stats. It’s basically one fantasy league removed from the robots taking over and killing us all. Well, the last laugh is on you robots, cholesterol is beating you to the punch! Kinda love that Razzball is putting on a tourney (hosted by NFBC — thank you!) that no one really has any clue how to strategize. A true everyman experience. Oh, I’m sure there’s a few people who think they know the correct strategy for Best Ball, and a few of them might be right, but there’s an under 1% chance they know why they’re right, and it isn’t just luck. In some ways, Best Ball leagues are a lot like Best Ball strategies. Throw a ton of them out there and a few good ones will rise to the top through sheer force of players’ performances and nothing you’re actually doing. That’s the fun. Anyway, here’s my RazzSlam, a 42-round, Best Ball 12 team draft recap:

Psyche! Before we get to the RazzSlam recap, the season’s first Buy/Sell is available on our Patreon, click that and sign up. It won’t be live on this site until this Friday. Anyway II, the RazzSlam recap:

OKAY, GIVE ME YOUR WAR ROOM TOTALS SO I CAN JUICE UP MY SARCASM AND SPRAY IT IN THE RIGHT PLACES.

We have a War Room for Best Ball, but, if I’m being honest, I didn’t use it much for this draft.

I THOUGHT YOU WERE A COMPANY MAN. WOW, NE-YO, WE GOT A NEW MISS INDEPENDENT.

I use the War Room for all snake and auction drafts, but since this is a 12-team draft and Best Ball and Points, I winged it. Think after four months of studying rankings I can handle one draft on my own.

FIRST OFF, IT’S NOT ‘WINGED,’ IT’S WUNG, AND SECOND, GOOD FOR YOU. FINALLY THINKING FOR YOURSELF.

I appreciate that, especially since you’re just my internal monologue.

WAIT…WHAT?

Yeah, you’re just me screaming.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Sorry, bro. It’s true. Here’s the scoring so we can at least try to make heads or tails of the league:

Here’s some points accumulated by players last year:

Bryce Harper – 637 points
Tarik Skubal – 633 points

THE TOP PITCHER IN FANTASY WAS THE SAME AS Bryce Harper? THAT SEEMS TELLING.

It’s telling me pitchers are so much less valuable in NFBC’s Points Leagues.

I SET YOU UP, YOU KNOCK ‘EM DOWN.

I do my best. Put up innings and potential wins and you have a chance to be a valuable pitcher. Last year, Framber Valdez had 478 points, the exact same amount as Steven Kwan; Paul Skenes had the same as Adolis Garcia; Kyle Tucker, who missed half a season, had the same as Carlos Rodon and more than Mason Miller. So, yes, pitching is way less valuable than hitting. Maybe that’s why I like the RazzSlam so much. Pitchers give everyone fits, so screw them! Though, not Dick Fitts. Don’t screw Dick Fitts, unless that’s your cup of tea.

SO, THIS IS BEST BALL AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO ADJUST YOUR LINEUP. THERE’S NOTHING TO DO NOW, RIGHT? JUST LET CHATGPT SET YOUR LINEUP AND KICK IT WITH YOUR BOYS?

There’s a few FAAB waiver wire pickups throughout the season. Watch Truss’s RazzSlam and RCL columns and he’ll be sure to notify you when they’re coming up. The first FAAB pickup is quick, April 8th, then the next one isn’t until June 3rd. Otherwise, you just sit back and let the computer choose your best lineup. This also played into how upsidey I went with my draft. All you need is nine decent starters each week. In theory, your worst starts won’t be used, so if you go for upside guys it should be fine when they get blown up. I wish I had other BestBall elements in my life. Give me BestBall dentistry. My teeth get cleaned in the best way when I need it and no superfluous brushing or visits to the dentist. Give me BestBall avocado toast. Only when the avocados are just ripe enough do they get smushed on the best piece of toasted sourdough. Give me BestBall boxers. Just the right amount of comfort. Call them BestBalls.

I THINK YOU’RE DESCRIBING A FUTURE DYSTOPIA WHERE HUMANS MAKE NO CHOICES AND COMPUTERS DO EVERYTHING.

Sah-weet!

Just finished a DC “Express” draft I joined today when the kids left with wife and in-laws for Disneyworld. It was a grueling but fun four hours. I drafted a very unconventional team for me, an absolutely nuts SP staff. It doesn’t seem like a 15-teamer!

Should Bowden Francis be on my roster? I keep seeing you telling folks to drop him.
=/

He looked pretty solid in his last ST start. I could use a bench bat – should I hold to see how Francis comes out of the gate or is he an easy drop? He is my last SP of 10.

Interesting scoring. Reminds me of a points league I was in ~18 years ago, except we also had +3 for a SO, +3 for a CG, and +3 for a CGSO.

I like the team. Might woulda gone 1-2 more rounds before taking a pitcher, but it looks pretty balanced.

I joined a H2H 7×7 league where they add K’s against and OPS for hitters. Would you take Elly with the 7th pick? He had 18 more K’s than anyone, so I don’t think he’ll go top 6. I was also debating taking Schwarber, Rooker and Cruz and punting K’s against. Thoughts?

Kinda surprised no one has mentioned in the comments that Cam Smith has made the Opening Day roster (presumably as starting RF). I guess most of Razzball Nation assumed this would happen as the Astros organization aren’t the Rockies … or even the Cubs …

Hi Grey,

I would appreciate your thoughts on my line up below.

I have no back up at 1B and 2B. I have Pena at SS and Machado at 3B to back up SS and 3B. I was thinking of waiving Pena to increase flexibility. Would you keep Pena or cut him? These players are on the wire:

Ceddanne Rafaela
Maekel Garcia
Willi Castro

Another option is to cut Pena and pick up a RP.

C: Cal Raleigh
1B: Josh Naylor
2B: Marcus Seimen
3B: Austin Riley
SS: Francisco Lindor
LF: Marcell Ozuno
CF: Brandon Nimmo
RF: Anthony Santandar
DH: Manny Machado (3B)
BN; Christian Yelich
BN: Jeremy Pena
BN; Colton Cowser

I would also appreciate your thoughts about Colton Cowser. Is he a keeper or should I look at the waiver wire?

Thanks!!!

Great comments. It brought me to my senses!

I saw Kris Bubic pitch last Thursday since I live in AZ and he was horrible. Of course, today he pitched well.

Will he always be a streamer? Would you pick him over Olson, May, Verlander, Wacha, Kelly, Leiter or Singer?

Of these eight. who would you select?

Thanks!!!

Hey Grey,

Thanks to your wisdom, I’m drafting at the turn as last year’s winner. It’s a 12-team 5×5 with OBP and QS. I also get to keep three players so I’m starting with Witt, Soto, and Gunnar.

I’m struggling for which path to go, as I’m not keen on taking deGrom or Strider with my first picks, but I also worry about Albies for some reason.

Which would you suggest for the first two turns, given what’s likely to be available?

Round 4/5: Schwarber (or Alonso) + deGrom
Round 6/7: 2B (Westburg, McClain) + 3B (Vientos, Caminero)

Round 4/5: Schwarber (or Alonso) + Albies
Round 6/7: SP1 (Schwellenbach, Ryan, etc.) + corner bat (Vientos, Caminero, Casas)

I’m in a deep 12 team dynasty league where you start 2 catchers.

My catchers are William Contreras and Ryan Jeffers. Is there any sense in keeping a third catcher on the bench? And if so would you go with Endy Rodriguez (just won a spot on the roster I think), Garver, Goodman or Heim?

Grey, My Dude!

This is a sexy team. Campbell and FrankenBench (Campbell helps) still puts your offense at the top until Tildaddy is back. Kudos for skipping the CLs. Even though saves are worth a lot, it’s definitely not worth the price. Good Luck!

My NL-Only H2H 5×5 (OBP) Keep-5 team has gotten better.

Dropped: Mervis, Gonzales, Herz,
Added: ScottII, Canning, Roupp

I originally dropped AJS-S for Irvin when it looked like Anderson might get the 5th spot. I ended up swapping them back.

Really looking forward to seeing how this team will fare weekly. It’s probably the most balanced team, but I have some consistency question marks. Other teams in our league are super Offense heavy or super Pitching heavy. Also, a lot of injuries to some teams already. I do have a tough schedule.

CA Ruiz – $3
1B  Naylor – $23
2B  Garcia – $14
SS  Winn – $2
3B  Vientos -$22
INF Swanson – $12

I’m in a keeper league, 12 team H2H 5×5 (OPS,QS,Sv+H), and due to bad luck and rash decisions, I came into the draft basically knowing that I wouldn’t have a top-20 hitter or pitcher. I tried to get a balance of high-floor and high upside guys, so that maybe I sneak into the playoffs while having some better keeper options next year. I used Rudy’s OPS rankings and ended up with the following:

C- (none)
1B- Olson (K)
2B- Westburg
3B- Caminero (K)
SS- Oneil
LF- Happ
CF- Merrill (K)
RF- Suzuki
UT- Toglia
UT- Volpe
BN- Scott 2
NA- Cam Smith

SPs- Kirby(K),Ober, Gallen, Bibee(K), Rodon, Pfaadt, Wacha, G. Rodriguez, Mize, Roupp
RPs- Bautista, B. Abreu, Yates, Erceg

Once Kirby and Grayson go on the IL I’ll pick up a catcher and move Cam Smith to the active roster. War Room, FWIW, is meh on my hitting, especially runs and steals, but loves my pitching.

The real question: Would you take Heliot Ramos over any of my current utility or bench players? I know you’re way higher on him than Steamer.

Thanks!

Here goes…

11 team 5×5 OBP, SOLDS. Think I’m a bit weak on SB and runs. Will turn a few bench bats into 2-3 RPs as first few weeks progress.

C: Bart

3B: Vientos
SS: Elly
IF: Adames (don’t love him but at pick 120 and he was 12th in OBP last year)
OF: Langford
OF: Yordan
OF: Wood
OF: Dominquez
UTIL: O’Neill
UTIL: Robles
Bench: Cam Smith, Soderstrom, G. Mitchell, Muncy, M. Shaw

SP: Bryce MIller
SP: Schwellenbach
SP: Bibee
SP: Lugo
SP: Arrighetti
SP: Pfaadt
SP: B. Francis
SP: Lodolo
RP: M. Montgomery
RP: Estrada
RP: Uceta

Waiver hitters: Victor Scott, Aranda, Noel
Waiver pitchers: R. Olson, D. May, D. Rasmussen, Birdsong, Boyd, Mize, Leiter, Meyer

Thoughts?
Any replacements?

And thank you. 7th season running here and really appreciate the work by the whole team.

Now that Landon Roupp won the fifth starter job in SF, do you like him more or less on a per inning basis in a points league? I thought he’d be better served as a 2-3 inning pitcher, given his track record, but now as a starter, do you think he loses value?

Morning, Grey! Back at it, thanks again for all your help. I lost the H2H championship last season for the second year in a row. I won the championship the two years before then, so it seems only fair… that I have callus on my forehead from banging it on my desk so many times after picking up Reid Detmers for the last week of the season.

My pitching staff is weak again. Do you think Landen Roupp is sexy enough to bid on him in waivers now, or would you say it’s wiser to try to wait and see how his first start goes? 14-team mixed league, QS instead of wins. I have two roster moves I can make until April 7th.

Just finished up my main league draft (12 team classic roto) and am thrilled, felt like I got lucky with how runs on positions went. Very Grey-heavy, so I hope you like!

I have two open bench spots. Should I prioritize relivers that could vulture saves given that obvious weak spot? More SPs? A bench bat (maybe with speed) to rotate in for Ramos when he’s benched?

RPs avail: Holton, Strahm, Weaver, Kinley, Uceta, Hodge (also, drop Erceg for any of these SAGNOFs?)
SPs avail: Wacha, Keller, N. Martinez, Peterson, Bassit, AJSS, Roupp, Mize
UTs avail: Maikel Garcia, Gurriel

Short week 1 in my H2H league. Either way, someone’s gonna be 1-0. We start any combo of 6 pitchers. For context a save with a K and no runs allowed is equal to a 5 inning start, 2 runs 5 k’s 3 or 4 hits but no win. I’ll start Sale, King, H.Brown, Felix * 4 games vs Toronto all he needs is to save one for me. Then my choices for the last two are Helsley, 3 game series, Pivetta who I’m assuming gets the 3rd or 4th start for SD, Walker Buehler v Texas. My other option will depend on how fast Schmidt is put on the IL and CBS designates it. If it’s by Wednesday, I can go for an early season stream of either Tyler Anderson or Jose Soriano vs the White Sox. feels early for that, but I thought I’d run it by you. Thx in advance.

Give me the goods on this squad. 10 team weekly H2H – 6×5 (standard + OPS). Keep 3 for 1 year (keepers from last year designated with “k”). Punting saves… didn’t draft pitching till the essentially the 8th round, considering the 3 keeper rule.

C – Wells
1b – Pasquantino
2b – McLain
SS – Mookie (k)
3b – Caminero
IF – Yandy
OF – Yordan (k)
OF – Oneil Cruz
OF – Langford
OF – Kwan
Util – Ohtani (hitter only)
BN – Cam Smith, Kristian Campbell
IL – Acuna (k)

sp – Shota
sp – Schwellenbach
sp – Bryce Miller
sp – Bryan Woo
sp – Pfaadt
sp – Pepiot
sp – Taj
sp – Baz
sp – Reese Olson
sp – Jobe
IL – Woodruff

Treading water until Acuna’s back. Took a flier on the young kids, and drafted on the young side due to the keeper rule. Figured a couple of them would hit to keep with Shohei going into next year. When the injured guys go on IL, gonna grab another OF (probably Joc or Buxton, but others out there like Jung Ho Lee, Conforto, Garrett Mitchell, Wallner) and another SP (Rasmussen likely, Buehler, May, Nick Martinez available).

Thoughts?

Your team looks dope. Would you please critique mine? 10 Team Yahoo h2h 5×5 keep 1, single utility, single RP. My keeper was Tatis Jr. Shallow league so plenty on WW if you take injuries on offense. So h2h guys go hard for pitching categories. Thats why bench is all pitching.

C – Yainer Diaz (HOU – C,1B)
1B – Josh Naylor (AZ – 1B)
2B – Ozzie Albies (ATL – 2B)
SS – CJ Abrams (WSH – SS)
3B – Junior Caminero (TB – 3B)
RF – Fernando Tatis Jr. Keeper (SD – RF)
CF – Oneil Cruz (PIT – SS,CF)
LF – Ian Happ (CHC – LF)
DH – Shohei Ohtani (Batter) (LAD – Util)

SP – Framber Valdez (HOU – SP)
SP – Shota Imanaga (CHC – SP)
SP – Zac Gallen (AZ – SP)
SP – Zach Eflin (BAL – SP)
RP – Josh Hader (HOU – RP)

BN – Nathan Eovaldi (TEX – SP)
BN – Nick Pivetta (SD – SP)
BN – Carlos Rodón (NYY – SP)
BN – Bowden Francis (TOR – SP,RP)
BN – Michael Wacha (KC – SP)

I typically follow Razzball 500 rankings tight on draft day. Please let me know if this is a competitive looking team for a shallow league and if there are areas I should seek to strengthen. Thank you Grey

You stuck me in there with Ariel Cohen and gregsauce..I drafted mostly hitters early mostly leadoff men and on base guys cause volume is key. Bailey Ober is my Ace. 1 point for a k suppresses pitcher value it’s normally 2. Many negatives so the more innings they go the less chance at negatives so I drafted 6 closers and many relievers who could take over. Low whip is the stat you want for pitching In these. Most starters over a period will score less than a sure closer.

You should be fine. Especially since President Trump just signed an executive order regarding your draft and said this about it. “Grey know drafts. He has the best drafts. Everyone knows this…except crooked Joe Biden..who was of course asleep during the draft much like the past 4 years…you know who isnt light on hitting…hitting the crack pipe that is….Hunter Biden”.

So I wouldn’t worry one bit. The rest of us poorz will have to go into the season without an executive order backing up our drafts. Must be nice.

Multi position eligibility guys and week to week boom or bust types like the Schwarbers or Eugenio Suarez’z and pitchers that could get 10 ks or give up 10 runs like the Pfaadts. There’s your winning strategy.

Nice draft! Gotta love that squad!
I assume you picked from the 3 or 4 spot?
I pick from the 8th spot in a 12 team work league. I’d call it friends and family, but similar to your RCL yesterday, we’re out for blood.
I have a feeling Gunnar falls to 8. I don’t love taking a guy who’s already on IL, but I can’t let him slide past that can I?
I will use those rankings, and war room, but just curious how you approach a 1st rd decision for an IL designated player.
Thanks

I’d hate this to be Gunnar.

A few yeas ago, I had a similar dilemna with a high raintroductory short-IL guy) who I “stole” ~ 1 round later than projections. Guy actually came back for 1-week in mid-season before he went back on IL.

  • I’m talking about Rendon.

Hey Grey,
How concerned are you about Sonny Gray? I usually never draft him, but got to a point of the draft where I wanted another SP and I grabbed him after reading your blurb on him lol….now of course it turns out he maybe trying to stave off TJ. Why can’t Ray and Gray have nice things!? Any who, while I am worred, this article seems rather harsh in referring to him as a “late round flier”.

Draft firm and strong with a laid-back tone
The aim is to win and to dominate home
Just like big-league legends, I dazzle and stun
Captivate the league, ‘cause my roster’s well-run
Do it for the vets, we do it for the rook
Crush it in your ballpark, in your scorebook
Or your dugout, on your laptop, in the group chat with your friends
The talk of the league, where the season never ends
So stack it, make trades, waiver wire plays
Don’t deserve the L, I’m here to amaze
The analytics got me reading every stat
OPS, WHIP—yeah, I’m deep into that
A brand-new draft with a sleeper aesthetic
So under-the-radar, it’s borderline prophetic
And yet it’s so clutch when it shows in the clutch
When my ace goes deep, y’all hush
So call up the closer, adjust your lineup
We don’t got time for excuses or hang-ups
If you’re trailing in the standings, let me take the lead
Join in the magic of the fantasy breed
Then cool out to the matchups, let ‘em play out smooth
Like a walk-off bomb or a sweet double groove
Like getting Sunday stress when you’re setting your squad
Or rage-quitting trades when the offers are flawed
I don’t really mind if it’s over your head
‘Cause the job of a GM is to stay ten steps ahead
So pay attention, it’s a numbers affair
And after the draft, you’ll be stuck in my glare

Hey Grey,

Keepers are due tomorrow for my

12 team
5×5 Roto
Avg/ runs/ hr/ rbi/ sb
W/ k/ era/ whip/ saves

2 catcher, 9 total pitchers
NO bench (unlimited IL)

I have 5 definites:

SS- Witt
Mi- EDLC
3b- Jazz
Of- Tucker
P- Crochet

I need one more from this group:

P- Strider (swing big/no weaknesses but riskiest)

1b- Naylor (balance positions/ not flashy)

3b/CI- Caminero(upside/future keeper)

Of- Santander (biggest power/rbi)

RP- Clase (saves now/don’t chase in draft)

*** 5 game in-season eligibility so obviously Jazz will also have 2b eligibility quickly

*** I won’t pick until end of round 2 (#96 overall) but I then I also have #’s 97, 104, 107 and 109 picks.

This is driving me crazy!

Insight appreciated!

Hi Grey, How did I do on my starting pitching for my 16 team 5×5 mixer (we usually start 5 starters and 3 relievers)?

SP1 Spencer Schwelly
SP2 Tanner Bibee
SP3 Reynaldo Lopez
SP4/5 Taj Bradley
SP4/5 Grant Holmes
SP6 Tanner Houck

Also would you order the last three here the same way? Thanks!
(Closers are Jhoan and Trevor Megill, btw)

Grey,

a) 12 team, roto, keeper, 31 roster (22 active, 3 bench, 3 MiLB slots, 1 IL slot). IL currently occupied by Eury Perez. It’s a 10-player keeper but I’m not keeping Eury. Would you drop him to move Murphy to the IL (when he gets stated to the IL) so I can add Murphy’s replacement or take a 0 until Murphy’s planned return April 14?

b) Rodney Dangerfield quote of the day for March 25, 2025

After I was born the doctor told my mother, I’m sorry I did what I could but he pulled through.

Want to get your advice and suggestion for roster construction and pitching for 11 team 5×5 NL only league auctions league. Only 1 transaction per month at end of month so not much opportunity to change your roster after draft. Is it better to go more balanced? More safe on pitching? Etc?
