Singing incredibly off-tune, “Oh honey, tramps like us! Baby, we were born to run!” Oh, sorry, I didn’t hear you walk in. I put on The Boss when I want clarity. It’s a Jersey thing, you may or may not understand. Born down in a dead man’s town! That’s Anaheim. A dead man’s town. It’s dusty and orangey and you end up like a dog that’s been beat too much when you try to understand how they never made the playoffs with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Leaving LA to a foreign land to go kill the Orange County man. The Angels know you can’t start a fire without a spark. Their 1st round draft pick is gonna go higher. Zach Neto before him, Nolan Schanuel before him, I’m calling for the Christian Moore rising. Come on up for the rising prospect! Come on up for the rising! Angels have been incredibly aggressive with prospects half as good as Neto and Schanuel, and Moore is actually a stud. He could’ve likely skipped the minors altogether. Everybody’s got a hungry heart for available waiver wire picks, and everybody got a hungry heart to win a fantasy league. I’ve already grabbed Christian Moore in one deeper league. Now, I had a friend who was a big baseball player back in high school, this is not Christian Moore. He was a big baseball player in college — 33 HRs, 4SBs, .384, 14% K%. He made Itch’s top 50 prospects post-draft update. Angels will be promoting him soon, because they hey hey hey come on, Angels, try a little. Nothing is forever. There’s got to be something better than Brandon Drury. Wait, that’s The Wallflowers. Meh, it works because Bruce covered it better than the original. Anyway, here’s some more players to Buy or Sell this week in fantasy baseball:

SIKE! This post was released on Wednesday for Patreon members. It will be released all year early for Patreons, so if people are getting a jump on you, it’s because they paid the $10. Anyway, the Fantasy Baseball Buy/Sell:

BUY

Joey Bart – [Bart shivering, freezing cold, when a giant hand removes Bart from Buster Posey’s shadow and into the gorgeous sun of Pittsburgh] Ahh…Much better.

Justin Turner – One thing is clear about Arenado, Springer and Turner’s collapses this year. I was right that their bats were slowing. I was only two, three and one year too early, respectively. Alas, Turner has been hot since the trade.

Ty France – Carrying an Eiffel Tower around Cincy with spaghetti on my head, “I’m a Ty France-head! Hey, stop eating from my head.”

Brandon Lowe – When they go Lowe, we go, “Oh crap, I should’ve went Lowe before them.”

Santiago Espinal – Fun fact! Santiago hablas Espinal.

Geraldo Perdomo – Half the challenge of being in on the schmotatoness is just riding the wave of which teams are hitting well. DBags got real hot after the break, and Perdomo has long been a guy who I low-key like because of his great contact, but also don’t like because he has very little power and speed. Imagine a young Adam Frazier. Call him Adam Frasier on Cheers.

Jeff McNeil – Almost exact polar opposite of Perdomo. An old Frazier. Call him Frasier On’Peacock.

Orlando Arcia – Imagining myself in the preseason if I knew Arcia would be hitting 5th behind Olson. [wavy lines] …I still don’t really care about Arcia…[wavy lines] That’s a wet blanket dream.

Ernie Clement – Weird week in schmotatoes. 7-day Player Rater is a yawnucopia of meh. Middle infidels are weak, corner infidels are better, let’s get moving.

Jonah Bride – Has been hitting third or cleanup every day, and no platooning. He looks kinda Quad-A-ish, but he does have some power and shouldn’t kill you in average. Looks kinda Ty France-ish. Call him Ty-goes-to-the-bridal-runner. Appropriately enough, I’m writing about Jonah Bride from under a chuppah.

Matt Chapman – If I were to type to highlight the hottest bat of the week as the lede, it would likely be Chapman, but also: He should’ve been rostered in more than 50% of leagues for the last few months, and at least the last few weeks. Highlighting guys who are rostered in 85% of leagues doesn’t move the needle. Live, learn, laugh.

Eugenio Suarez – He should be owned in less leagues than even Chapman. Suarez has been hot for a month. Snap out of your purple haze and grab him!

Zach Dezenzo – Here’s what Itch said, “A powerful right-handed hitter at 6’4” 220 lbs, Dezenzo moves well on the dirt for an infielder his size. He was a four-year starter at Ohio State who slugged .701 as a senior after slugging .732 with wooden bats in the MLB Draft League. This is a theme for Houston, who likes to see a little success sans aluminum and has reaped some middle-round rewards in the process. Dezenzo was a 12th round pick in 2022 and is already knocking at the majors after slashing .305/.383/.531 with 18 home runs and 22 steals in 94 games across two levels in 2023. Speaking of slashing, let me find Grey in a dark alley, please.” What? One thing that may or may not be accurate but feels accurate: Astros draft well and develop better. Zach Dezenzo was hitting .391 in Triple-A (only 11 games) and went 4/3 with a 18.9% K%. He’s a 3rd baseman, so I guess he could go to 1B at least half the time, if not just finally kill the Singleton Experiment, or DH like he did last night.

Wilyer Abreu – Full disclosure alert! I look at every player in this post’s stats. I don’t relay all of them, because that shizz is boring. You can click a player’s name and get transported to their player page if you want and see their stats. With that said, I looked at Abreu’s stats expecting to see a guy who I would ticket for a sleeper for next year, and I did not see that. Super boring stats. He has been hot though.

Joc Pederson – You have to platoon Pederson in and out of your lineup, but if you can, he’s solid. Plus, if you move Joc in and out of your UTIL. slot, you can say you have Joc itch. What fun!

Tommy Pham – He just needed to return to St. Louis for a little home cooking, and by ‘home cooking’ I mean holding his former fantasy football commissioner’s hand over a stove’s flame until he apologized for letting a lopsided trade through.

Mitch Haniger – Just had a very good chuckle. Went to look at Haniger’s stats, and got a little sidetracked by his prospect grades. He was a 60-grade speed guy? Ha, okay. I mean, yes, but also: No, no, no, c’mon.

Matt Wallner – The Twins hitters are all so alluring if you let Mr. Prorater whisper in your ear. “C’mon, Grey, you know you want to see what Wallner can do in a 162-game prorated season…” [wildly shaking my head while strapped to a hospital bed] No! Don’t tell me!

Michael ConfortoTyler Fitzgerald is the hottest San Fran Giant, but Conforto isn’t far behind him on the 7-day Player Rater. The more you know…

Parker Meadows – Parker? I barely rode her! Meadows has solid power and speed, but might not hit .220.

Alex Call – From Meadows to Call, or if Carly Rae Jepsen is reading, Call Me Adows. If you need steals, Call Alex maybe.

Jake McCarthy – Hey, if it isn’t my 2023 sleeper, Jake McCarthy! Hello, 2023 sleeper, Jake McCarthy, say hello to your mother for me!

Yariel Rodriguez – This is a Streamonator call, like the call it makes to City Hall.

Luis Severino – This is also a Streamonator call. “So, even though we’ve fallen in love, you’re saying the state won’t let me marry a vacuum?”

Ben Joyce – Of two minds with Joyce getting Angels saves. He should, but does it hurt his long-term price? Then again, does Ron Washington actually listen to the front office for anything? Or better yet, does the Angels’ front office actually consider things like this? Okay, more like of four minds.

Daniel Hudson – Wanna good laugh? Dodgers spent $2.7 billion this offseason and don’t have a closer. I’d put Hudson in the lead for saves in LA, but it’s almost a four-way tie.

Calvin Faucher – He should lean into his last name similarities, and enter the 9th masked up, then, after every strikeout, mime getting vaxxed.

Justin Martinez – The DBags’ closer job is currently some combo of Martinez, Ginkel, Thompson and Puk. The MaGi TomPuk anime-sounding monster. And watch it just be Sewald again, though Martinez looks like an emerging fantastic closer.

Hunter Harvey – The Royals would’ve already won the division if they didn’t stick with McArthur for four months. Not true, but sounds it.

Yennier Cano – Orioles’ closer job is: How many runs do we allow these other schmohawks to give up before we call on Cano?

SELL

Adolis Garcia – Remember, this is no longer a “Sell.” Trading deadlines have past in most leagues. If your league has a late trading deadline, then by all means go to the Fantasy Baseball Trade Analyzer and do what you do. This is, how’sever, a drop not a sell. So, why call it a Sell still? “In this week’s Buy/Drop?” What is that nonsense? A buy/drop? C’mon. How about a buy/shut up! Any hoo! The swing-at-everything, fly-ball-hitting, wheeler-dealer profile doesn’t age well, and Adolis Garcia is its latest victim. Not entirely out in dynasty leagues, but he’s been stinky since May. My hope is lost.

Brice Turang – Standing at betting window, “Hey, I’d like to put $5 on ‘Speed doesn’t slump’ to cover. Thanks.” Two months later, damn it, Turang! That was my favorite five dollars! I was all the way in on Turang, but the last month has been nearly impossible to roster in any league. If you’re in a dynasty league, then I wouldn’t trade Turang for a bottle of Gavin Rossdale’s Glycerine, but I would go to our Fantasy Baseball Trade Analyzer and explore options.

Grey,

I cant find a link outside of MLB.com (yet).

Kim hits a ball off top of wall and deflects off Stowers glove for a HR….EXCEPT they review for a ground rule double.

No game tying HR they lose.

I lose that category and dont tie.

Im confused how it wasnt a HR?

Any of these players worth an add as a potential keeper in a dynasty?

Nolan Gorman, Joey Ortiz, Jake McCarthy, Sal Frelick, Blake Perkins, Jared Kelenic, Leody Taveras, JJ Bleday, Will Benson

I’d be dropping Matt Vierling, Joc Pederson, Ben Lively, Aaron Civale, Jose Butto or Kevin Ginkel.

Thanks!

i’m here assuming this isn’t over say the type of gambling debts you hear about in the NBA where 2 guys that both make at least 5 mil a year play dice/poker/whatever on a plane/road trip or locker room; then one of them shows up since he’s being dirtballed by the other millionaire over 500-2000 or whatever, with a gun in the locker room to get his money. i’m very against pham doing what it seems like he’s doing, but if we flip that to he just is owed money by millionaire deadbeats such as those NBA (sometimes but less often NFL), i’d quick jump into his corner over that. it takes a much more special kind of POS to be making say 5-12 or whatever mil a year pretax, and try to dodge paying a guy over a few thousand that you also have to see everyday and just what hope it goes away? seriously special types there.

further data point for deep leagues with holds, roansy today being used like an 8th inning guy in late game tie, matches what depthcharts are showing also. doing pretty well lately also, in a pen that was just wrecked from trades, those left are mostly awful (strickland, m.moore) AND even for not just holds/deep, this exact team is making sure joyce doesn’t get all the save opps. quijada is probably moving upward also (again, he’s been down there before, not this year though).

Grey,

I love the late season offers that act as if the season hasnt happened yet.

I got offered Verdugo + McCarthy for Doyle because it would still fill CF and give me bench versatility per him. I think I am fine with Rooker+Doyle+Pederson/Thomas (pissing me off).

What if I threw in Eloy? Uhhhh no dawg. No.

Or my Keller + Gausman offer for LouRob which got countered with an ask of Rooker + Doyle.

Rooker now has more 20+ HR seasons than LouRob. LouRob had ONE year of quality and only one year of production. If it was March, I believed in Doyle but I also believed in LouRob, I would have done it. Now it is August different story. Just Eloy 2.0.

Thanks for my TED talk.

probably walker as SF has little history of going off the guy the coach outright said is closing, and dude just closed, esp when compared to LAA where guys that all year never even were used in save opps get save opps the second after the trade deadline to keep joyce’s price down in arb later.

Adolis = stinkiest, but man what an April! Sad story… before the season I traded Judge for Ohtani because I like 5 categories and Ohtani seemed to have no issues with the elbow. Of course two weeks into the season I felt really sorry for the team that shipped me Ohtani that I didn’t really have the heart to try and regain Judge and his possible injury… besides, to do so would have meant trading away Adolis and he was ON FIRE! … sigh

You traded Judge for Ohtani, and then the owner would have given Judge up for Garcia after 2 weeks? Ohtani has been more useful due to steals. I must be missing something.

Fitzgerald had 1576 AB in minors with 71 HR 71 SB. 1 every 22 AB.

He has 160 AB and 12/12 this season in MLB. 1 every 12.

Which puts him between Ruth and Bonds for career or second behind Judge and ahead of Ohtani this year.

Guy was one for three on steals at AAA.

Not jealous Tigers fan at all.

Idk if it is recency bias but feels like a lot of 5.2 IP with guys even when it makes zero sense. 3 run lead, 89 pitchs, 5.2 and no one on. Call to the pen. Then inexplicably same manager will throw his pitcher out there in 6th at 95 pitches just to let him face a batter or two and pulls at 100.

finally, we get some news from somewhere on why arraez is getting all this seemingly extra off time. they first tried noting it as “he’s bad at lefties” which is interesting take on a guy routinely leading or close to batting titles, played every day across 2 earlier teams, and SD till lately (3rd team). i own him in like 2 spots and it seemed real damn goofy.

For An Armenianless Vacation Come to Akron
For An Armenianless Vacation Come to Akron

and of course it not only matches his off time, it matches him hitting worse for that monthish. these teams are hilarious. it’s gotta be pretty often the player himself just wants this covered up then later hits a point where “hmmm, i want to actually have people know why i suck lately”; it makes no sense for the team just to cover it up for a month then just aug 10th leak it otherwise.

SteveNZ

It’s one of those stretches where the only way your guys are getting on base is by way of a fielder’s choice, or (as just now with Arraez) they come up with the sacks full and drive one in with a groundout *rolling eyes emoji*

NL-only h2h. I’ve been playing without a catcher since Moreno got hurt. Adrian Del Castillo is available. Questions:

  1. Would you continue to play without a catcher and just stream whatever is needed? If Del Castillo only plays every other day (he’s sitting today after last night’s walk-off), streaming may be more valuable.
  2. If you pick up ADC, who is the drop: BDLC, Perdomo, McMahon, or Call? I am leaning BDLC
  3. Who is the second drop when Betts is activated on Monday? I am leaning McMahon

if we’re comparing morel to eloy morel’s done a lot more “something” all year long

morel: 25.3% RBI + runs per at bat (this is fine number, esp if we note where he often hit in lineup and CUBS wasn’t a good offense either, nor is TB), .673 OPS (pretty terrible, but we’ll get to eloy), 20 HR’s, 7 steals in 391 at bats and can at least play most everyday. and certainly the positional elig is a lot better (2B/3B/CF at least, RF in yahoo, vs eloy’s LF/DH only anywhere).

eloy: 250 at bats (some of that is on IR, but not all, he wouldn’t play say 4 str days often on WSOX either, probably just from fear of injury, was never a righty/lefty situation though on WSOX), 15.6% RBI + runs per at bat (in great lineup slot, but on bad team mostly), .683 OPS (this shocks me it’s higher than morel), 5 HR’s, 3 steals.

For An Armenianless Vacation Come to Akron
For An Armenianless Vacation Come to Akron

if you want to really play the narrative: “oh eloy’s only sucked since he didn’t give a shit on WSOX” that’s certainly a possible narrative. but he’s still not playing everyday, and when he first got to BAL he was loogy only till he just happened to hit well for the first 4 games, but anybody that’s owned any of these, how sure are you eloy keeps playing even close to say 5 days a week:
cowser
kjerstad
mayo
norby
holliday
mullins

it likely wouldn’t take much of a cold streak to turn that maybe 5 days a week into say 2-3.

Drop Doval for Hodge, Vesia, Kittridge, G. Reed, Ty Rogers, or Payamps in an NL-Only H2H? My CLs are Raisel and Williams.

Also, if you had to give your best guess right now, where do you think you’d rank Ohtani for next year among NL SPs? Outside Top 20? He is eligible to be kept for $1 if for some miracle he pitches once before the season is over. Doubtful, but he’d be a steal at $1 even with limited innings.

Highest SP roster % (not including IL) listed below (this is only a 12-team league too):

Springs 37%
Heaney 19%
Kremer 19%
Weaver 17%
Bradford 14%
Montas 14%

Benintendi with more HR than LouRob. Did not have that on my bingo card. If you told me Mullins was having a better year I would think he is back to that 30/30 year. Bummer.

Any leagues we starting Eovaldi @ NYY? (12tm H2Hpts)

Deep league (why else would I care about this choice?).

(1) I own Gavin Stone but he’s been ineffective, and I fear he may lose his future starts (e.g., Buehler). Drop him for Suarez (Balt)?

(2) I only have $8 FAAB remaining. Is the change worth $1?

Similar decision wrt SWR (I own).
(1) SWR (starts safe but meh performance) or Gavin Stone?
(2) Is Suarez worth $1 versus SWR?

Hi Grey, thoughts on streaming JP Sears @ TOR this Sunday in my RCL?

Thanks and have a great weekend!

from past butcherings don’t sears on road (mostly deep leagues where i’d even think to do it at all).

if yr just looking at guys on sunday likely not owned in a 12’er (esp if those old statements about the “smart” owners in RCL’s only owning 3 SP’s at a time, might be more guys than what i’m saying) i’m guessing for regular depth owned 12’ers SP’s likely not owned with better SON numbers for that day:
the hound vs OAK (bassitt, 35.2, highest score here likely not owned)
birdsong vs DET
severino @ SEA (i’ve seen him not owned or streamed in a really deep BN’s 12’er last few months so might not be owned)
springs vs BAL
d.rea vs CIN
a.suarez @ TB (that’s how bad TB is, suarez on road gets a 5.3)
festa vs CLE
below here i’d not really worry about for 12’ers and some are owned (h.brown and c.sanchez both on road)

Thanks, all great suggestions! I’m basing my JP Sears idea on:

  • 2 recent great outings, admittedly in good parks and weak opponents
  • Toronto’s park seems to have become more pitcher-friendly since their renovations a couple of years ago
  • Toronto’s offense is basically Vladi… and that’s it.

i’m sure i had similar reasons why he was streamed by me on road in the past. have fun with it. for the most part it was just i need innings, in a deep league, and other options were worse looking. not the case here if a chunk of those above are available.

uh oh, here’s another good looking short term piece of info to stream sears, bido just wiped them @ TOR today.

MF’er, wanted a 2nd data point on harvey vs mcarthur so i can drop mcarthur in one spot for sure for hicks (or t.scott SD) assuming i’m not beat in the next 4.5 hours when lineups unlock, instead KC got cute and held them both out of the 8th inning letting the stratton/w.smith bum group remove that possibility.

there we go, we find out why that coach looked that stupid yesterday putting in w.smith and stratton in the 8th: harvey was injured, they waited till today to note it of course. this also seals which of scott (SD) or mcarthur to drop in saves only first.

always suspecting delayed injury news or coverups after something odd appeared to have happened, it’s amazing how often those just a bit later have a hit rate for somebody’s got something going on, same as TON missing 5 days from “sickness” and numerous others. it’s not like 80% or anything crazy, but it’s a good chunk of the time. i suspect this year my hit rate for “something’s off here, somebody’s probably injured with something we aren’t hearing about yet” is over 35%. w.smith/stratton being used in extremely high leverage (1 run lead in the 8th when usage didn’t say mcarthur or harvey were tired) sent alarm bells off for me here yesterday.

(1) Atlanta is already maneuvering Schwellenbach workload. How many starts can I expect in the rest of season (w/o constraint, he’d probably have had ~ 8 starts)?

(2) Is Edwin Cabrera also likely to be limited?

he very much seems to believe gausman is on the way down, bad. near certain this’ll be walker, in a vacuum/dynasty with no pitcher needs specifically.

I am having a hard time believing. What do you think? What is a bat comp to you?

player rater ROS if you take the per game on walker since you’d have to since he’s injured still, has gausman as more valuable (20ish vs 13.8 assuming QS’s and OPS (OBP wouldn’t change much if that); but raters are slow to changes, if one say believes gausman is way less valuable now than in march, as grey does for sure i’d just not believe the bot on that. like prospects, projection machines are very slow to adjust to drastic improvements or devolving, the exact types prospects sometimes do show (for quick improvements). if they did react to short term stuff (like “gausman’s going off a cliff, in the last 4 months, and it’s likely permanent” etc) their outputs would be much worse for accuracy than they are. in poker parlance they appear nitty, and that’s often true, but nitty on long term projections is the most accurate way to project things (it’s often noted by stats heads that all projections machines are mostly equal, they’re fighting for like 5%, if you find one that’s far off the others, it likely has some sort of extreme assumptions built into it). just like independant of human exploits standard for sure poker winning is TAG play. rudy every so often shows how his does against the others, and he usually wins, it’s not from him getting extreme inputs though, he’s constantly trying to scrape up parts of that likely 5%, better than others.

carroll’s first 3+ months a great example, it didn’t have him input as injured, but anybody that remembered he had an unfixed shoulder thing from last year would notice how related that near certainly is to his being completely horrible (also about halfway through that 3 months the coach whether true or not said something about a “swing adjustment based on the shoulder”). at no time in that 3 months did the player rater back off of him though, it’s going by it’s inputs. as of a month ago though, nobody in their right mind would trade for him in a redraft at the price the ROS rater gave him. it’s very hard to believe somebody actually healthy is just that bad for that long at a time (who was sooo much better prior, at his age).

other 1B elig bat comps to gausman for player rater value: bohm, naylor, alonso (alonso as slightly more than gausman). i’ve outright seen people undervalue alonso based on BABIP stuff from last year though, saw one guy trade him str up in total bases/OBP/hits added 14’er for j.chisholm back in march even without a speed need, that seemed crazy for the raters to do. if you don’t trust gausman and think he’s worth less than the rater walker is a good spot.

Thanks for all the info. I love Gausman but he isnt the same. Guy lives and dies with splitter and now has no splitter. I am not sure if that is fixable or just gone.

If I could get Alonso or Jazz it would be a miracle but I am in an 18 team dynasty so a bit tougher with talent.

with months in the rearview since alonso was maybe the most unlucky big name hitter from 23’s BABIP bad luck guys, doubt he’s gotten for gausman now. walker’s fine for me if moving gausman

Yeah I keep trying to see an angle of optimism for Gausman. Partially because cool to see a dude just click and go from nobody to Cy Young stuff. Partially because I picked up off waivers 4-5 years ago after his first start or two. I keep hoping for a new tweak or fixblike what made him awesome.

likely right, but this might be SF doing a smart version of short term demotion, getting somebody on roster that you trust right now while he works out whatever. contrary to most teams when they do this: kimbrel, sewald, ed diaz, others this year already

immediately closer monkey put out a likely walker at head of committee, like 10ish or less minutes they sent out blurbs from coach saying j.hicks most likely.

fun times for wasting limited moves in h2h leagues here. it went
(1) closer monkey: assumes it’s r.walker
(2) SF coach: walker i prefer in the 8th
(3) closer monkey: notes that
((4) right when game ends: coach now decides on walker.

always a good look in the span of like 5ish hours or less when your coach bounces around like this even know no changes. my guess is he actually talked to hicks since 5 hours before when he said that.
