So this year, like so many before, the closer trade market is always an interesting cocktail mixer of events that shake things up.  The Padres waited to be first, which makes zero sense… but also makes total sense.  A conundrum wrapped in bacon as they traded Fernando Rodney to the ever more deadly bullpen in Miami.  He will not be closing there, but will basically make that bullpen just deeper and taking value away from great holds guys on the year in David Phelps and Kyle Barraclough.  Rodney brings his glistening 1 earned run on the year, to a situation behind the Marlins closer A.J. Ramos, who hasn’t blown a save to date.  So now the ramifications don’t just stay with the Marlins, their bullpen is solid.  The Padres, however, are like the movie Thinner, a cursed bunch of unprovens, which is sometimes good and bad.  Ryan Buchter is the first guy up, as he has carved out a decent set-up niche there.  After that, it is a bunch of Quacks, Villas, and BM’s.  Buchter has the K-rate, just not the pedigree… yet, to be a closer.  He has the job as they say in fantasy, which is better than being fantasy homeless or unemployed. So Buchter is the add. Maurer and Quackenbush are on ready five.  Here what else is happening in the game of final bosses.  Have a safe and Happy 4th of July weekend!

  • The Rays are on closer number three, as Alex Colome hits the DL.  Xavier Cedeno is the best guy there to be thrust into the situation. Sneaky pick for me to get a few saves, if you missed the boat, is Matt Andriese.  P.S. I love you, but he has starter eligibility in most leagues.
  • Brad Ziegler with two blown saves in the last fortnight makes the Daniel Hudson-watch viable again.
  • With Addison Reed’s workload, anyone looking for a nice K-rated reliever, look at Hansel Robles.
  • Darren O’Day is not coming back anytime after another set back to his hammy.  Brach and Guvens are the goods on the winning team in baseball since 2012.

Closer d’Etat  (Top set-up guys next up for saves)

A new feature that I have been looking to add is the top set-up guys who are either pitching well or are right behind the closer.  Getting the off day save for a shaky closer or someone who can jump in for a downed king of saves.  Never hurts to bag an extra reliever for your bench at best they either don’t play, you bench them or the do well.  No one ever does bad for someone we all roster…

$12 Salads

You know that restaurant your girlfriend/wife/what-have-you likes to go to that charges, like, $12 for a salad? Every time you go there, you have a thoroughly solid meal. No complaints, except you just paid $12 for a salad when you could’ve went to McDonald’s and stuffed you and your woman for ten schmools and had $2 in quarters left over to make the hotel bed vibrate. These closers are $12 salads.

Donkeycorns

Imagine you’re following a donkey, who’s wearing a wool cap, through a desert for 1700 miles. Why are you following a donkey? Because he promises you something wonderful and you just need to trust him. Does the donkey talk? Yes. Yes, he does talk. So when you and the donkey in the wool cap arrive at his destination, he removes the wool cap to reveal a horn. The donkey is a unicorn and his gift to you for your trust is saves. These closers are Donkeycorns.

Employed

These guys are the men that make the save market go round. They punch in, punch out. Have the job, no real threat to speak of, and are basically just there to collect great benny’s so they can take care of their crippled brother. Who is only really crippled because he is scared of the sun.

Brain Freezes

I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples, bananas and Carlos Marmol– Wait, he just gave up 12 earned runs and hit Castro in the head with a pick-off throw. Brain freeze! Make it stop! Use the following closers at your own risk.

26.  Ryan Buchter – (Brandon Maurer, Kevin Quackenbush)

27. Xavier Cedeno – (Enny Romero, Matt Andriese)

28.  Shawn Kelley – (Felipe Rivero, Yusmeiro Petit)

July 2nd? You must have missed that Maurer is the closer in SD. Also Iglesias has a good shot at closing after Cingrani

    Smokey,

I picked up Oh on the waivers, but Buchter is still available. Is he the better bet ROS?
    Yahoo, H2H, 12 team
Closers have been my main issue but following this report has helped!

    Thanks!

@Just Busted: (I see the rankings, of course, but am trying to factor save chances and certainty into the decision.)

Padre say Maurer is the first guy, even though he looked his same old crappy self last night..I added Maurer and will hold on my bench for now..My other closers are Kenley, Ramos, Robertson, Cishek and Rosenthal..I also have the Tigers Rondon..This is a 4 ever keeper, with 50 players per team.

Not a big fan of closers, but after 15 years of H2H, which I rarely owned any closers, I am back playing roto.

Any pitchers in the minors that you would recommending stashing, with elite closer potential?

Have enjoyed your write- ups this year, Smokey.

    Cheers,

    MP

@Malicious Phenoms: If Maurer is their best option then it won’t be long, just my opinion. Closers in the minors are even more fickl do to promotions to levels and what not. Couple guys I have ben watching Jimmy Sherfy, Trevor Hildenberger and Brandon McCurry

        @Smokey: Thanks Man

Padres on record to give Maurer first crack at it. Reported yesterday afternoon and put into play last night. Sheesh……when did you write this?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

@Johnc: Before yesterday’s game but I read contradicting reports that Buchter would get his shot as well.

    • griff says:

@Johnc: Buchter will eventually get the job. Maurer has had multiple stretches where he has shat the bed.

thoughts on lorenzen taking over as closer in cin?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

@rick: it makes sense, I mentioned it in April that they should groom him as a reliever

thoughts on holding rodney since aj blew his first save? kinda want to stream conley vs atl

    • @rick:
      I would stream Conley…

@rick: Def hold for now, Yes I would stream Conley

  8. What you guys think of this trade in 14 team h2h points league:

    give up: Salazar, Duffy, Travis

    Get: Carrasco, Walker, Werth

I also have Kinsler and Schoop elig at 2b. While I like travis a lot, i don’t ‘need’ him…

@Moses: Ugh I kinda love Salazar, but you are trading from excess so you did well

  9. Hometown Heroes says:

It seems like Edwin Diaz could take over the top setup role any minute from Benoit. What are the odds Cishek is traded and Diaz takes over? Or will it have to wait until next year?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Hometown Heroes: While I can see them eventually trading Cishek, I don’t see it yet because they are still in the fight for a wild card w/o King Felix so until he comes back fully and they see what is what and then may punt. Diaz is being groomed as the guy though no doubt. He is their Betances

Drop Rosenthal? Any recommendations for RP stashes in the event of trades such as Nate Jones, Ryan Dull, Cam Bedrosian? Much thanks.

    • jason bourne says:
      (link)

Couldn’t wait so one league I was able to handcuff Seung Hwan Oh to Rosenthal. Figured Rosenthal is still in the mix with Siegrist out. Another, I dropped Rosie for Buchter which doesn’t seem too good right now. I’m dumping Estevez instead and trying to pick up Bedrosian or one of the guys you mentioned. Not a Maurer fan. I like Ryan Dull, but Axford may get the closer role first if Madson is traded. I’m not sure what will happen with LAA in terms of who may get dealt. I was able to get Iglesias off the wire in another, so am happy about that.

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@jason bourne: sorry BBQ’n got me caught up yesterday. While I wouldn’t have dropped Rosey if you need the room and quality in some leagues I can see it. LAA needs to trade Street before anyone has value there and even then its a muddled up mess of B level type relievers. Axford does get the gig if he isn’t traded and Madson is, but they still have Doolittle.

Just announced that estevez would remain Rockies closer , and ottavino could be taking over soon enough. I have McGee and esteveZ on my roster. Worth holding McGee for now or add ottavino in place? Or just hold estevez and forget ottavino and McGee – Thanks !

    • Smokey

@Josh-NYC: lose McGee in any situation
