Top 80 Starters for 2023 Fantasy Baseball

Looking at the overall 2023 fantasy baseball rankings, the top 80 starters for 2023 fantasy baseball is from around 200 overall to 275 overall, which is just about the end for 12-team mixed leagues. This is your late fourth, mostly fifth thru the beginning of the sixth starters. This is just about it for 12 team leagues, though the last tier in this post is still in 12-team league territory, so you’ll have to wait until the next post to finish off that tier. Don’t worry, on that next post, I’ll be by with another 70-ish pitchers for those in deeper leagues, and/or dynasty and keeper leagues. Or for those that just like to read about fantasy baseball while the world burns around them. I fall into that latter camp. The last few weeks our hitter profiles have focused on some deep sleepers to add to your late round draft board. This week we are going to buck that trend and take a peak at some big names that come with an even bigger price tag. Too often factors like youth, upside, discovery bias and more come together and deceive our draft capital. Yes, this is the article where we say Lars Nootbar is going to bust, Michael Harris II is too expensive and Bobby Witt Jr. will see the sophomore slump. Some may say this is blasphemy, but it might just be the perspective you need.

Top 15 For First-Year-Player Dynasty Fantasy Baseball Drafts

1. Orioles SS Jackson Holliday | 19 | A | 2026
The number one overall pick in 2022’s amateur draft, Holliday is a 6’1” 175 lb left-handed hitter who appears to have inherited his father’s all-out approach to baseball. He’s probably in a batting cage or a weight room right now. Everyone works hard at this level, but Holliday’s had access to baseball resources for a long time, and you can see the results in his game and his build. He dominated on the complex for just eight games before the team had seen enough and sent him to Low-A for the final two weeks of the season, where he posted a .439 on base percentage. He’ll likely head back there to open the year but should be able to force a promotion at some point. I suspect we’ll see more aggressive timelines with this next cohort of young Orioles in general. Holliday could be a nice bellwether for that.

Welcome back to the 2023 Dynasty Keepers. This week we will look at my Tier 5 group – players 125 to 101.
When it comes to putting together your dynasty team, you have to try to stick to your formula as much as possible. I’ve discussed my approach to how I build my dynasty teams, but here is a quick reminder:
Young over old.
Draft the hitter over the pitcher.
Draft the starting pitcher ahead of the closer
Trust your gut
Heading into a draft, figure out what your approach is going to be then stick with it as much as possible. Yes, there are times when you need to be flexible, but in the end just go with your gut instinct. You formulated a plan, so trust your plan and don’t make a panic pick because there is a run at a position,
If your plan is to build a team heavy on relatively unknown but high-ceiling players, then go for it. As the season progresses and you need to fill holes, you can always flip a young player and/or prospects (if you have a league with prospect rosters) for a key veteran.
You want to win right away? Then go heavy with proven veteran players, with the risk that many other teams are filling their rosters with younger players who can be core players for years to come. Three years from now your old players may start their decline and then you’re headed for a rebuild.

2023 MLB Draft: Top Ten College Prospects To Target In Dynasty Leagues

After unveiling the top five college prospects for the 2023 MLB Draft two weeks ago, we dive into players 6-10 today. And in two more weeks, we’ll expand from these 10 to the top 20. It’s a steady, sequential process, much like a Build-A-Bear Workshop but without the annoying kids and hard-of-hearing grandparents. Call this the Build-A-FYPD Workshop, because that’s what the purpose here truly is: to help you construct your first-year player draft boards and plot your future targets in dynasty formats. In the first installment, I went over four position players and one pitcher in Tennessee’s Chase Dollander. As we lengthen the list, three more hurlers will be introduced, as well as a pair of first-round infielders. The players in the space below compose a well-rounded group, more comparable to a perfectly-constructed burrito bowl at Chipotle than a stuffed bear or a jumbo-sized Snorlax plush toy (apparently they have those now, ask Google). The more I think about this, the more I feel I should be at the mall stuffing various Pokemon full of cotton and eating Auntie Anne’s. I’ll leave you all to the reading and join you in the comments section at the end of my trip.

Tough sledding ahead for Oakland. Might feel like the worst is behind you at first after your team tears down, but I don’t think that’s the case. The worst part is three seasons later when you still can’t see any daylight and just keep losing every day. I don’t think that’ll be the case for Oakland. Billy Beane is probably not a full-tanking type, and I’m happy for that. Off-season signing Aledmys Diaz, Jace Peterson and Jesus Aguilar have all proven to be major league regulars at times in their careers. Signing these types is often the best use of roster spots during a rebuild in my opinion. You get a better product early in the season, perhaps somebody really pops (Peterson and Diaz are both sound bets imo), perhaps you can only trade one of them for anything at the deadline. The point is you tried. Made sharp plays on interesting angles. They should write a book about that kind of thing.
