Next week’s Buy/Sell will be going over guys to Buy or Sell that are over 50% rostered, because there’s no real games between now and then for players to get hot. With that said, today’s guy might be rostered in over 50% of leagues still, but, if he’s not, I don’t blame you. He’s been awful. Brenton Doyle had a 1st half to forget. Early next week will be the top 100 for the 2nd half, and as I was going over that, I became reacquainted with some 1st half busts and–Get out of here, Ozzie Albies, I never want to think about you again!–Sorry, he keeps appearing in my head, asking, “Hey, what was that Eminem song about remembering me? Was it called, Remember Me? Do you Remember Me? I’m here!” And Albies is waving like Forrest Gump for some reason. Leave my headspace alone, Ozzie Albies! Any hoo! Doyle seems to finally come out of season-long slump this past week, so naturally their manager, Warren Junipero Schaeffer, starts benching him, because the Rockies are an organization that is rotten to its core. I heard the Rockies might be shaking up their front office this offseason. Ha! Ya think? Who are they going to get to be their GM? “Please welcome your new Rockies’ GM, Dick Monfort Jr. Jr.” So, Rockies are bad, but summer in Colorado is an excellent place to hit and Doyle’s Statcast looks almost identical to last year, maybe a tad better. He’s been unlucky, and I’d be buying him. Unless the Rockies replace him in the outfield with a Monfort. “Is that Randy Quaid Monfort in center? I didn’t know he married into the family.” Anyway, here’s some more players to Buy or Sell this week in fantasy baseball:

PSYCHE! This post was released a week early for Patreon members. It will be released all year early for Patreons, so if people are getting a jump on you, it’s because they paid the $10. Anyway, the Fantasy Baseball Buy/Sell:

BUY

Victor Caratini – This week Caratini was two shots of Ketel and one shot of off-brand V8, which is just schmotato juice to you and me.

Samuel Basallo – O’s have to promote–Okay, they don’t have to, obviously, but they should promote him.

Romy Gonzalez – As mentioned in the opening, it’s hard to know who’s going to be hot starting in the 2nd half. Guys can go into the break hot, then come out of cold, but Romy’s been hot for roughly six weeks now.

Max Muncy – This is Ma’s Muncy. On the 7-day Player Rater, 2nd base was laughably gross this week. Some guys who were hot? Sure! But those guys are like Brooks Baldwin and, well, you see this list.

Colt Keith – Heading out to Gramercy Park to hang with Cool Colt Keith and the Breakin’ Crew wearing my spraypainted hoodie and funky-fresh Adidas–ow, my back. I should’ve bent down with my knees when lifting this boombox. So, Cool Colt Keith has been hot, and as soon as I’m outta traction, I’m gonna get down there with my breakin’ crew!

Davis Schneider – There’s a small trend in this week’s Buy, there’s a lot of BJs! Sorry, that’s Blue Jays. That’s what BJs stands for, right? By the way, there’s a BJ’s store near us, maybe they’re nationwide. It’s like a Costco, but they also sell blow jobs, I think. Never been! I’m married!

Zach McKinstry – Out of all the names here, here’s one who actually could be worthwhile for longer than a few days-slash-a-week. Though, Addison Barger fits into that too, but he’s not listed because he was above 50% rostered and I have to draw the line somewhere. He’s also a BJ.

Mickey Moniak – All about terrible Rockies this week. Time to get your Rox off your waivers! Which is not something you should say in BJ’s. Unless you’re at Surhoff’s house and checking your fantasy team, then it’s likely okay. You have to ask BJ Surhoff if you can use his wifi. Think people say to him, “Yes, sir…hoff.”

Tyler Freeman – Ya think the Rockies’ braintrust aka The Monforts are ever like, “Surprised our team isn’t good, we have Tyler Freeman, Jordan Beck, Ryan Ritter, Mickey Moniak, Michael Toglia…I can go on and on! These guys are so great!”

Nick Loftin – If I were to go into a lab with Kenny Lofton’s DNA and a science degree from an online university, I’d definitely name my test tube outfielder, Nick Loftin.

Harrison Bader – He’s on pace for a 16/16/.250 season and when I started typing that up I thought it was going to make him sound enticing. It didn’t, did it?

Nathan Lukes – It’s all BJs all the time! Not me! Still married! Lukes makes excellent contact and isn’t even a Quad-A player. He’s too old for that. He’s a Five-A player. He’s Cinco de A. What does a horse eat if it’s 30 years old and still hasn’t caught on in the majors? AAAAA…

Brady Singer – This is a Streamonator call like the call it makes to Delta Airlines.

Emmet Sheehan – This is also a Streamonator call. “I don’t want to book a flight I just want to speak to the automated system that books your flights. I was having a lovely conversation with model number 71434RE61.”

Kevin Ginkel – Here’s what I said the other day, “DBags lost Puk and Justin Martinez already, and now turn their lonely eyes to. Dot dot dot. Kevin Einhorn Ginkel/Ginkel Einhorn? I guess so. Also, there is Kyle “Larger than the Cactus” Backhus? Or Trading Places’ Beeks? Or how about John Curtiss? He added the 2nd S on his last name to sound more like a Diamondback. True story, I picked up Ginkel, saw he had a 9 ERA and dropped him for Curtiss, who I might drop today since Ginkel got the save. Am I going back to Ginkel? No, not in a 12-teamer. It’s not worth the saves for me.” And that’s me quoting me!

Ronny Henriquez – If you name your kid, Ronny, you have to give them the middle name, “Bobby, Ricky And Mike.” There should be a law.

Dennis Santana – Has David Bednar been traded yet? How about now? Dot dot dot. Now? Well, it’ll happen.

Phil Maton – I don’t know what a Maton is, but I’m Phil’ing it up because Helsley is headed out of town to somewhere. I’m shaking my damn head without acronyms thinking about what a cluster it’s gonna be if Helsley ends up in the Dodgers’ pen.

SELL

Shota Imanaga –  Don’t really go looking for a guy to sell, per se. If in my travels around the interwebs I happen to see a guy’s stats that jump out at me as being so awful that I need to dig in, then I dig in. Shota is the most recent example of that. He pitched the other day, and I was like, “Let me see what he’s up to,” and then I keeled over into a fetal position and started whispering for my mommy. His underlying numbers are hideous. Not sure what’s happened to him between last year and this year, but I can’t remember such a fall-off before. From 9 K/9 to 6.2, from 1.5 BB/9 to 2.2, from a 3.62 xFIP to 4.95. Maybe when Hamilton was singing about not wasting his Shota, he was talking about trading him. Maybe to King George? I wouldn’t trade Shota Imanaga for a dozen shrimp tails that fell out of a Benihana chef’s hat, but I would go to the Fantasy Baseball Trade Analyzer and explore options.

Jeremy B in his post basically suggesting that Big Dumper’s value will never be higher and that, basicallly, he can’t keep this up. sounds fair.

He mentions targeting someone like Tucker or Witt Jr in a trade. Not sure I could pull that off, but what about Lindor? I have a Volpe/Tyler Freeman-sized hole at SS…

Ump calls Davis Schneider HR foul. In Sacramento, so short foul poles and different camera angles. Crew Chief review – stands. Manager Schneider comes out to argue and gets tossed. The other 3 umpires wouldn’t let him get near the 3B ump (who wandered down the LF line to get farther away) who was who he wanted to yell at. Davis than goes back to bat and hits a HR.

Couple more questions today heading into the AS break. First, thanks for doing all this informed, entertaining baseball writing and hanging out by the computer! Hope you’re taking care of posture, eyes, and mental health. Go Marlins!

1) Who are top two out of Sugano, Lauer, Walter, Junk? I’m hoping Sugano can reset and have a decent 2nd half, but I’m not confident

2) In a 12 tm dynasty, would you pick up Doyle or Beck over Cowser?

3) Dropped Adolis. Then he hits those two homers. I know someone will scoop him, and I’m feeling regretful. But fantasy baseball is learning to let go. Or do I need him back over Bohm?

Manaea and Ivan back soon creating a crowd. Ivan was good last year and so far this year. Which of these options would you do?
1. Keep Ivan and cut A Ramirez.
2. Keep Ivan and cut N Lowe.
3. Keep Ivan and cut Manaea.
4. Keep Manaea and cut Ivan.

Weird H2H league rule that Ivan claim can’t go in until tomorrow and can’t execute until league starts again on Friday. So on hold for now which gives time to reflect on today’s action. I did not see the Mets game but heard Manaea was good for two innings before giving up hits. 7 Ks seems juicy. Ivan comes back getting on base first 2 ABs. Professional hitter. But may sit games per manager. Otto hits another bomb but B Lowe back soon. N Lowe 4-28 lately and is in my view finder. But the Guy has a ton of RBIs. Oh variables! I appreciate your patience as I ask if I continue with my claim for Ivan and if so drop Manaea still or a bat? Team below if helpful:
A Ramirez (or Ivan if I get him)
Vlad, JoRam, Machado
Lindor, Story, Otto
Tucker, Buxton, Teoscar, O Cruz, Donovan
Util – N Lowe or Ivan
IL B Lowe
SP Crochet, Wheeler, Yamamoto, Kirby, Ranger, Misi, Manaea

My 2B and 3B eligible players are Suarez, Westburg, Ketel, Maikel. I also have Witt and Pena for SS and MI.

My SP are Ray, Rodon, Bubic, Keller, Flaherty and Snell on IL.

I’m middle to upper middle of pack in HR, RBI, R, ERA, K. Tied for 1st overall in a 9-team roto.

This whole Misi ASG selection argument is starting to become laughable. Brewers manager comes out and says “fans really want to see this guy pitch.”
Says the team who could have called him up in May, or April, but instead played service time manipulation. The Brewers fans didn’t want to see him pitch earlier? Ridiculous.
Kid could have easily earned his spot on NL squad but now he bares the backlash that belong to Brew Crew.

He belonged in league sooner, his AAA showed it. I think he would have earned his way into this game on merit given the runway. I hope it spotlights player service time manipulation.

18 teamer 6×6 dynasty we play LF/CF/RF vs OF. I have had the good or bad fortune of having successful C.

I snagged Y. Diaz off WW a couple years back and had Big Dumper and juggled them last year. Diaz seemed to have higher avg with decent stats so I flipped Cal Raleigh for Bubba Chandler, Leiter, and Bibee this offseason. Oops!

I then traded for Goodman in the offseason and have him at RF. Will be C only next year.

I have a trade where he wants a C back, Diaz or Goodman. Diaz seems to finally be getting it together and will likely have his best power year. Goodman had basically been Rooker this first half. Who would you rather move in the deal long term?

10 team AL only keeper league, 5×5 roto. Auction, $260 budget for 23 positions (9 Ps), 7 bench spots drafted separately in reserve draft. Up to 15 active keepers, 3 reserves. I have no chance this season

Is it worth trading Jeff Hoffman for Delauter and Bazzana? Hoffman’s remaining contract is 17/17/22/27. Delauter and Bazzana can be kept for free next season as reserves, then 10/15/20 for Delauter and 15/20 for Bazzana.

Closers are obviously super valuable in an AL only league but also volatile. Of course neither prospect is a guarantee to succeed either.

Also, what in the hell am I supposed to do with Ozzie in a 12 team keeper league?!? He’s still young enough with past pedigree to make it hard to straight out drop. But oh am I tempted. A couple of those guys above would qualify at 2B too as potential replacements.

Which 3 should in start today:
1. Roman Anthony in Boston vs Shane Baz
2. Pete Crow Armstrong in NY vs Max Fried
3. James wood in MIL vs Brandon Woodruff
4. Vlad Guerrero jr at athletics vs Jacob Lopez
5. Wyatt Langford in Houston vs Framber Valdez

Guerrero seems like an easy start since he mashes lefties and it’s a good park,
and normally PCA is an auto start but he’s batted like .180 against lefties and is facing fried. And then James wood has been kinda cold, Langford has a tough matchup, and Roman Anthony is tearing it up (with primarily just base hits)

This babying of SP seems to be getting worse not better. The Pirates limiting Skenes to 80 pitches when they can’t even score means he might not get another win this year.

If you compare these young guys to the top guys when I first started getting into MLB at age 7: Jim Palmer, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, its totally insane.

Palmer topped 300 IP in three consecutive years, from 1975-77, and just missed on his 4th in 1978 ( my first full year collecting BB cards). From 1975-1978 he won 20+ games each year while averaging 39 starts!

If you look at Carlton’s first Cy in 1972 and his fourth in 1982 it seems cartoonish by today’s standards. 1972 Steve Carlton:

GS:41 IP:346 W:27 L:10 K:310 ERA: 1.96 WHIP: 0.99. CG: 30 SHO:8

Somehow after that season he pitched 16 more seasons with 3 Cy’s.

Even his 1982 numbers, a season many of us followed pretty closely it’s nuts:

GS:38 IP:296 W:23 L:11 K:286 ERA: 3.10 WHIP:1.14 CG:19 SHO:6

5217 IP in his career that lasted through his age 43 season.

I think this explains why it’s tough for many of us long time fans to get excited about SP. Bats are still exciting but SP is comparatively nowadays like a soda that lost its carbonation.

Dave D

Scary how that could be true: Glasnow, Sasaki, McClanahan, Strider, Snell, Bradish , etc all top guys to draft in recent years that cant stay on the field for long will likely never have a 200IP 20W season in the future, let alone in 3 or 4 straight years like a generation ago some top guys could do.

Isn’t that pathetic? I’d rather see a veteran who isnt that great but who has paid some dues to get rewarded. Its not like this is even Skenes. He has no business in AS game.

In our lifetime there was a guy who made 40+ starts with 30 CG in a season.

Phil Niekro threw 210 IP in his age 47 season when we were in high school.

In Jim Palmer’s 39th and final start of the 1977 season he threw an 11 inning CG facing 42 total batters. I wonder how many pitches he threw, 200?

With his team chasing the Yankees for the AL East title, Palmer made 7 starts in September. The final four were CG’s all on 3 days rest. All in all he went 6-0, 1.44 ERA with 5CG in September 1977. Team went 7-0 in those starts, won a total of 97 games and missed playoffs. Nowadays?

Best catcher season since 1970 Johnny Bench IMO if we consider both offense and defense . Has a shot at finishing even better! People forget Bench topped 40 HR and 125 RBI winning MVP (including Gold Glove) in both 1970 and 1972. He was 8.6 WAR in ‘72. Raleigh should get it if he keeps pace since his solid defense at the most difficult position should remove any doubt.

Sorry my previous post was an error. It’s Brenton Doyle I’m after (your lead!) not Matt Boyd.***

“I’ve got some deeper pitching and guys on the IL trending toward a return (Shane Bieber/Nestor Cortes)

Would you part with either Taj Bradley or Zack Littell for Brenton Doyle?? I could use the bench bat.

What about Mackenzie Gore? That too much? It’s a dynasty league.

Cheers!

I was offered Burleson for Manaea. Burl would be my only bench bat and play when my dinged up guys don’t (Bux, Teo) or if N Lowe gets shipped out and platooned. Kinda want to see what Manaea brings to the table tho. H2H league so no rush to fix my lineup. Looking down the road, who has the upside?

Fingers crossed an Doyle. After protecting four, Doyle was my first pick this Spring, Bryce Miller was my second. I felt like Peter Gammons after round two. Fast forward four months and I’m wondering if it’s a good move to drop Burger for Ginkel.

I’m going to hazard a guess that Volpe will not be in the top 100 for the second half.

But what to do with him?

He’s been too bad to use (eg I’m using Tyler Freeman at SS and he’s boring as batshit but still better!) and there are fellas on the wire who have done better so far – or are projected to do better than him ROS. And no one would want him in a trade.

It feels like he’s just clogging up a roster spot – is he droppable now or does he deserve a couple more weeks on my bench to see if he gets going in the second half?

Afternoon & Happy World Population Day!

Sadly, it seems i’ll need to rearrange my team’s population since 2 of my 3 OF-ers (Roman & Happ) are benched today and I only have 1 bench bat (Heliot).

Would you cut any of the following SP’s for a starting bat tonight?

  • Emmet Sheehan (piggy backing Ohtani’s start tomorrow @ SF)
  • Taj Bradley (looked good-ish yesterday)

Thanks as always!

Rays did me dirty this week with B Lowe. Nail in coffin was announcing IL stint one minute after our lineups locked. But they did pull Snell vs Los Doyers in the WS. So call it even??
So here is my dilemma. I put Lowe in my IL spot and have Ivan or Manaea to drop to fill 2B. So with my team and WW options below, what should we do? H2H league. 3rd place. Heard Manaea may pitch some on Sunday.
WW: Otto vs O’s (Rogers, Young),
Keith vs M’s (Kirby, Gilbert ugh), polanco vs Pitt (Burrows, Keller)

A Ramirez
Vlad, Machado, JoRam
Lindor, Story, open
Tucker, Teo, O Cruz, Donovan, Bux
Util N Lowe or Ivan
Crochet, Wheeler, Kirby, Yamamoto, Ranger, Misi, Manaea
IL B Lowe

Not really. The Yankees don’t have the guys the Braves need or they’d be playing them and Riley is relatively cheap.

But the Yankees can take Ozuna for Spencer Jones and the Braves can play Baldwin every game.

Buy Day!!!

NL-Only, H2H (OBP)

Vientos is my only 3B eligible player. My current CLs are Diaz, Palencia, and Henriquez giving me a big advantage in all my matchups for Saves. If I traded one for a better 3B, I’d have the UTIL spot used by Toglia or Vientos depending on matchups. It’s also possible that Toglia becomes my 1B if Naylor is traded to the AL, and then Vientos would become my Utility option.

Is it worth trading Palencia or Henriquez to get a consistant 3B bat in my lineup? It seems risky since we don’t know if CHC will trade for a CL, and who knows if Henriquez can keep this up. Which, if any, would you part with?

Thank you!

FinsterGrinster
Reply to  Grey

Thank you! I was looking at Bohm or Chapman to be involved somehow in the deal. Honestly, I wouldn’t be concerned about trading if I was positive that Naylor wasn’t going to be dealt. No contending NL teams really need a 1B that badly, and I doubt anybody would be trading for Naylor to be their DH.
