What’s poppin, Razzpimples? Bullpen update time!

Don’t forget, the Razzball Bullpen Chart is manned by yours truly and updated like every single second (not really, but I stay on top of thangs for the most part). And directly below, you’ll see a current look at the Top 15 RP (in both 5×5 standard leagues and 6×6  saves/holds leagues) via our Player Rater. Subscribers also get access to the incredibly handy Relievonator Game Log, which tracks every single relief appearance from the last 14 days, including what inning they were called upon and how many batters/pitches they faced/threw.

Alrighty, let’s do it to it. (Note: Monday’s games do not factor in)

Saves Savants

Steady As They Go:

  • Josh Hader did typical Josh Hader things, leading the way with 3 SV while striking out seven in just 3 IP. No runs and no walks, baybeee. The metrics I favor looked like this: 63.6 K%, 32.7 SwStr%, and 49 CSW%. Filth.
  • Camilo Doval also had 3 SV, but was much less sexy this week. He has been one of the best RP in the entire fantasy realm for the past month+, but this week wasn’t quite up to snuff: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K. Hate to see a 2.00 WHIP, but it’s not like this guy is losing his job any time soon. Still had a healthy 32 CSW% despite the walks.
  • Alexis Diaz had 3 SV and 2 K in 2.2 IP. FIP and SIERA weren’t the prettiest this week (both north of 4.00), but I’ve said a thousand times before how nasty this guy is and that he can overcome the flaws in his arsenal. Plus the Reds are actually winning a lot of games lately! What a fun team. I’m a secondary fan for sure.
  • Pete Fairbanks is back and closing for the Rays. Picked up 2 SV this week despite just 1.2 IP of work. No hits/walks/runs and 1 K.

On The Rise:

  • Jordan Hicks collected back-to-back saves over the weekend after Giovanny Gallegos (see below) got shelled. Maybe it’s only us Cardinals fans that remember Hicks was the closer once upon a time. Looks like he just might be the closer again, at least until Helsley is back. When Hicks is firing on all cylinders and not walking everyone, he’s a thing of beauty to behold.
  • Jason Foley should absolutely be on your radar. Had 1 SV and 1 HLD this week in 4 IP, with 6 K and 1 BB while allowing no runs and just one hit. Alex Lange (also see below) has been dreadful in June, so there may be a changing of the guard.
  • Adbert Alzolay seems to be the favored 9th-inning option at the moment. Cubs haven’t had too many save opps in the last two weeks, but Alzolay had both saves. Leiter Jr. has only been seeing the 7th and 8th lately.
  • Paul Sewald really belongs in the top section, though I have him here this week since I know some of you’s were concerned about Munoz coming in and stealing saves. Hasn’t been the case. Probably won’t be the case too often. Don’t fix what ain’t broken!

Trending Down:

  • Alex Lange was incredible in May but has been a floating turd in June. Opponents are batting almost .400 off him this month. The swing-and-miss is wavering, with just 6 K to 5 BB in 5 IP this month. Yuck. I could see him turning it around and regaining confidence in the ninth, but right now you really gotta question whether he’s worth a roster spot. Depending on your wire options, I’d at least consider making a move. No one rushing to grab a struggling closer on a bad team anyway.
  • Jose Alvarado has been good enough since his return from the IL, however, it looks as if Craig Kimbrel is the main closer for the foreseeable future. Think you can cut bait in standard SV-only leagues.
  • Devin Williams managed 2 SV this week but wrecked your ratios. Posted an 18.00 ERA and 3.50 WHIP. Rough week; I’m sure better ones are ahead. He’s got a long leash.
  • Raisel Iglesias also has a long leash, but his week’s line was a tough pill to swallow: 3 IP, 9 H 4 ER, 1 HR, 6 K. There were some bright spots, at least. Firstly, 6 K and 0 BB. Secondly, 20.3 SwStr%.
  • Giovanny Gallegos was expected to be closing for the Cardinals, but he pretty much blew that. I’m not saying he won’t see the ninth ever again, but I am saying I wouldn’t bother with him right now in most SV-only formats. Cardinals suck anyway lol.

Holds Heroes

Steady As They Go:

  • Steven Wilson was the only 4 HLD hero this week, striking out five in 3.1 IP. No runs, just one hit, and two walks allowed. Sometimes he looks untouchable, but he’s not elite. Still, given his deployment, overall skillset, and team he plays for, you gotta love the holds outlook ROS.
  • A.J. Minter is back in the groove. Had 3 SVHD this week (2 HLD), striking out four and walking none in 3.1 scoreless. The Braves are ridiculously good and Minter is the #1 setup man. Recipe for fantasy gold.
  • Andres Munoz continues to snap, crackle, and pop. Been in midseason form since Spring Training. Two more holds this week, striking out five and allowing no hits in 2.2 scoreless.
  • Tyler Rogers is the #1 setup man in San Fran, outpitching his bro this year by a good wide margin. He earned 2 HLD and 1 W on the week. Won’t ever be a strikeout machine but should give strong ratios.

On The Rise:

  • Mark Leiter Jr. is on the rise is a pure holds source given that Alzolay has pulled ahead as the 9th-inning man. Leiter had 2 HLD this week, striking out five in four scoreless.
  • Jose Soriano had 3 HLD and 4 K, but he did allow 3 ER in just 2.1 IP. He was on the rise last week and he still garners that attention this week.
  • Jacob Webb picked up 2 HLD and 1 SV, tossing four scoreless. Don’t think he’s gonna evolve into an elite type, but he’s getting consistent late-inning work on a pretty good team.
  • Griffin Jax could, however, get back to his borderline-elite ways. Sometimes this dude is just downright dirty. Sometimes he’s…not. This week wasn’t spectacular by any means, but 1 SV and 1 HLD never hurt, especially when you post a 0.00 ERA and 0.50 WHIP along with ’em. The ratios have been strong with this one over the last two weeks or so. And another point in his favor is that both Jorge Lopez and Caleb Thielbar are on the IL and not contending for holds opps.

Trending Down:

  • Yennier Cano is still trending down and I don’t care what anyone says. Sure, he had 2 HLD and a 0.00 ERA this week. Also only had 8.1 SwStr% and 18.9 CSW% while allowing 3 H and 1 BB to just 1 K in 2.1 IP. I’m still shouting “Sell this man! Sell him while you can!” from every rooftop I can climb.
  • Alex Vesia was supposed to skyrocket to fantasy elite-dome this year, but instead, he’s plummeted to irrelevancy. More losses and more bad numbers this week. I shouldn’t even bother talking about him, really. I only am to point out how wrong I was about him. Sorry to anyone whom I may have persuaded to believe in him this year.
  • Chris Devenski was poo poo this week, allowing 4 H, 2 ER, and 4 BB in just 3 IP. Might right the ship, or he may be regressing back to his mean. Time will tell.
  • Seranthony Dominguez hit the IL, so just drop that dude.
  • Colin Holderman ditto. Ain’t worth an IL spot in most cases.
  • Jorge Lopez also on the IL for mental health reasons. Wishing him all the best.
  • Jesse Chavez was placed on the IL after taking a comebacker off the shin. Man’s like 40, cut him some slack!
