One more week in the book and we’re starting to see guys separate themselves. It’s still early but things are starting to clear up and the season is in full swing. So what have learned? Ronald Acuna is pretty dang good at hitting a baseball and we should have taken Corbin Burnes earlier. If you were fortunate enough to snag either of them congrats and if you have both well… you’re the envy of the rest of your league. But we all know those two are crushing it, you don’t need me to tell you that. Now, on to some other players to take note of.
Justin Turner is coming on strong. He’s just doing his thing.
Joey Wendle is near the top of the list for third baseman. Congrats if you drafted him, ride that streak. His multi position eligibility makes him a solid fill in piece even when/if he cools down. Other than his BB;K ratio he’s doing everything right and could wind up being one of the steals of the draft.
Adam Frazier is a guy that I always want to like and so far you love to see what he’s doing. If your middle infield spot is letting you down, take a peek to see if he’s still available.
Jed Lowrie is enjoying a return to action after dealing with injury the past couple seasons. We’ve seen him have success before and a job in Oakland could be just what the doctor ordered.
David Peralta is a guy who sees a points league boost batting cleanup in the desert. Not always the flashiest option although he did just explode for a 10 total base performance. His roster percentage should be higher.
Jared Walsh has an everyday job and should be rostered everywhere.
Carson Kelly is here to save you from the wasteland that is catcher. He was a guy to target going into the season and all he’s done so far is prove that right. He’s got the power to get it done and should play often enough to make you happy.
Colin Moran Coolwhip just did a deep dive into Moran and came away encouraged that he can be a useful guy to have on your roster. He’s certainly trying to be by racking up the RBIs. I’d like to see the flashes of power that he’s displayed turn in to something more consistent but either way he should find a spot on your team.
Luis Arraez is putting up points batting over .300 but he doesn’t give you much besides that. Unfortunately for points leagues that means he doesn’t really have many ways to contribute. The man just racks up singles. If he can start turning those in to doubles then we might really have something. Or if the Twins could start driving him in more often. It also doesn’t help that could either bat leadoff or at the bottom of the order. Arraez is a tough guy to rate for me because the batting average is so beautiful. Still, he’s a valid play in deeper leagues or if you need some short term help, but there are options with more upside.
Miguel Rojas can help out at short. His points are mostly driven by average but he is chipping in some steals. Worth a look to see if he can keep racking up hits.
Byron Buxton continues to do his thing. So far he’s proving me wrong as I wanted nothing to do with him during draft season because I wasn’t ready to be hurt again. I hope that I was wrong because I’ve always wanted to like him, the potential is so tantalizing. I’m still not ready to go out and trade for him because we’ve been burned before but he should absolutely be a hold now if you’ve got him unless someone just blows you away with a trade offer.
Cedric Mullins has been money but we still need to see how the playing time situation shakes out with Austin Hays back from his injury. Hays should go right back to his everyday role but my hope is that they can find at bats for Mullins as well. This is a situation to keep an eye on.
Mitch Haniger is back in action and you love to see it. We know he had the talent and if you took a chance on him in drafts, you’re reaping the rewards.
Yimi Garcia is a somewhat of a surprise near the top of the RP ranks and his numbers actually put him fairly high up on the overall pitching ranks. As long as he’s getting save opportunities he’s got value.
Anthony DeSclafani has been chugging along for the Giants. The Bay is great for pitchers and he hasn’t even gotten to take advantage of it yet with three road starts. Bigger things are yet to come for him.
