FanDuel: Jacob Of The Thunder, Justin Of The Pasture

We have a DFS battle of two pitching deities on today’s 9 game FanDuel Main Slate, between Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander. It’s such a tossup we need to look to their name origins for meaning. This will surely help us make a decision. We find deGrom is Flemish, and means ‘thunder’ in many Slavic languages; and we find Verlander is also Flemish, and likely means ‘dweller by the pasture land’. deGrom could also (absolutely not) refer to Grom Gelato, which seems very likely (no). So, we have thunder and gelato vs. pasture dweller. That’s still a tough decision. Maybe we’ll look at horoscopes. Or maybe we just need to get both pitchers in lineups today.

Prospect News: Bobby’s World (Finally)

I’m a stone’s throw from Cleveland, and a lot of the talk on the radio (that isn’t about the Browns) is about when the heck the Tribe is going to promote Bobby Bradley. He’s been featured in my stash lists two months in a row and has just been crushing it for Triple-A Columbus (24 dingers, hitting .290+). Chief Wahoo is working his magic from beyond the grave because apparently the prayers have been answered. With Leonys Martin DFA’d, today’s a great day to bring up the young slugger and see what he can do. Bradley has always lurked in the Top 100 lists, so I doubt he’s available in your dynasty league. It’s possible he’s on the wire in redrafts however. BB has a lot of swing and miss in his game so don’t expect a pretty average or K-rate in the bigs. But he’s cheap power, and even with everybody and their brother hitting 40 homers nowadays, the potential for 20+ homers down the stretch is still useful. Deep Impact: Shohei The Money

We all know that Shohei Ohtani is amazing, or at least this homer does. After his elbow injury on June 6th, I plunged deep into a nightmare. The water was warm. He missed the remainder of the month and came back a bit slow. After the All-Star Break, his sole purpose was to simply DH. And it was beautiful. Ohtani could be an elite bat if he were to focus just on that. His (hitter) scouting report said he has 70-grade power that’s effortless with a smooth stroke and 45-grade hit tool that is largely due to some swing-and-miss tendencies. But, you have to understand… he’s a top-tier pitcher who obsesses over film. There are few in the league that study more than him; his work ethic is legendary. When can one focus on being a better hitter while you are trying to pitch against 9 other hitters each week?

On this week’s Sausage Fest, B_Don and Donkey Teeth discuss the call up of top pitching prospect Zac Gallen off the top. DT then profiles another young Marlins arm in Elieser Hernandez, which leads to a bit of disagreement between the hosts regarding Elieser’s current fantasy value and future outlook.

B_Don later delves in on his profile of Astros starter Framber Valdez. The fellas are mostly in agreement on Framber’s upside, as well as, some risks involved with owing the lefty. The Ditka Crew stuffs the sausage to the brim down to the last minute with a flurry of rapid fire pick up options. Touch and squeeze the sausage today!

Buehler Invites Rockies To Celebrate Sweet Sixteen

While sweet sixteens are traditionally celebrated by girls, it’s 2019 and so many lines have been blurred that we are living in a very “anything goes” society. Setting a new personal high, Walker Buehler struck out 16 Colorado Rockies while throwing a three-hit complete game gem. What I like most: Well I guess what I like most is the sixteen punch outs, but what I really like is the zero walks. Sixteen strikeouts and no walks is so sexy. How sexy? 2007 Grady Sizemore sexy. Walker did give up two solo home runs, but those were to two of the best hitters in baseball. Charlie Blackmon has been unbelievable lately and Nolan Arenado is Nolan Arenado. He did strike both of them out (Arenado twice) over the course of the game, but when you strikeout 16, that’s bound to happen. To put Buehler’s performance in terms my usual nine readers might better understand, he scored just under 50 fantasy points depending on if you league gives points for complete games. That’s the kind of points jolt that feels like a gut punch to your opponent when he checks his/her matchup and sees he’s playing Buehler.

FanDuel: Ryu Time

Sometimes a FanDuel slate is straightforward. There’s a Dodger pitcher, pitching at home, with a 1.26 ERA this year? Sign me up! Hyun-Jin Ryu ($10,600) is the man this year. He’s 9-1 with a 1.26 ERA and .82 WHIP this year. If the season ended today he would be the NL Cy Young award winner. He has a 0.45 ERA in June and a 0.87 ERA at home. He very well might throw a complete game shutout today. Now on the rest of the picks.

Rolling In The Deep: So Far, Sogard

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me like the waiver wire is running extra thin these days. Not that there’s ever too much to choose from in deeper leagues, but this is the first week where I’m having trouble finding even the weakest replacements to help cover injuries, at least on my AL-only team. I’m just feeling a free agent lull… Kimbrel and Keuchel have signed, there haven’t been any Yordan Alvarez-level promotions in the last few weeks, and some injured stars are finally returning – often bumping part-time players who had gained some temporary deep-league relevance out of a gig. For now, I’m just trying to tread water in the leagues I’m doing well in, and trying to keep an eye out for any possible addition that could help my teams that have been floundering. That, then, brings us to this week’s list of players that may be available to assist owners in NL-only, AL-only, and other particuarly deep fantasy baseball leagues.

Bear or Bull: Ramon of the Laureano Crime Family

Crime often pays because A) a product is obtained for free and sold at a markup (this can also include certain services as well) or B) a product or service is provided at an exhorbitant markup due to its illegal nature. It’s not all reward, though, as there are significant risks in these ventures, the most obvious coming from law enforcement. As a result, many of resources need to be allocated to stay one step ahead of the 5-0 in order to stay in business and flourish. Which brings me to Ramon Laureano of the Oakland Athletics, who has been a Top 40 player over the past month and the #4 player over the past seven days. Is this just a lucky streak or has he discovered something in order to stay out of fantasy jail and prosper?

FanDuel: Come Sale Away With Me

Happy Friday everyone! We have a 14-game slate on FanDuel this Friday and I’m not going to lie to you, the pricing is tight today. If I had my way, I’d be rolling out Chris Sale ($12,000), as he has the matchup with the highest upside. Sale’s been absolutely brilliant since April 23rd, sporting a 2.36 SIERA to go with his 41.4% strikeout rate. Sale’s opponent, the Blue Jays have just the 26th best wRC+ against left-handed pitching. The problem is, if we lock in Chris Sale at his super high price, it leaves you with just $2,875 per position to fill out your roster. Brendan Rodgers Is The Silver Lining Of A Sad Story

Trevor Story hit the IL with a thumb sprain, which is bad news (no dur), but the Rockies are saying there’s no ligament damage, so it could’ve been worse. The good news is Brendan Rodgers was promoted. Is this good news? For Rodgers, I’d imagine it is. For the Uber driver taking Rodgers to the airport? Prolly good news for them. The guy sitting next to Rodgers on the plane having to hear about how Rodgers is not going to sit on the bench for Pat Valaika, this time, things are gonna be different? Doesn’t sound like good news for that guy sitting next to him. What a bore! Okay, so I know, I know, I KNOW the Rockies have burned us all to the point where we shudder at commercials for Burn Notice reruns on USA, but there is a reason why the Rockies have burned us. Because we all want to own all of them due to the stadium. I grabbed Rodgers for that very reason. We shall see, but I put it at 70/30 the Rockies play Pat Valaika, and 30 is for: Rodgers doesn’t play, is sent down and Hampson is recalled to also not play. Closer Rankings, Week 12: Brasiers Get Hot

Much like an actual brasier, that’s used to store live coals, relievers get hot at certain times of the season. Perhaps we’re about to embark on just such a hot streak for some guys. Maybe one is actually named Brasier. Let’s take a look at the bullpen news of the week:

A fresh Ryan Brasier looked sharp earning a save in his return from the bereavement list. Could this be a sign of things to come? The Red Sox would love it if he could do the job they ticketed him for this season.
The Reds desire to use Rasiel Iglesias in other innings has popped back up. David Bell called on Iglesias in the eighth two straight days, giving Michael Lorenzon back to back saves. You haven’t been thrilled with the production from Iglesias this season so here’s some poop icing on your crap cake.
Ken Giles doesn’t expect to miss more than the minimum ten days on the IL. It is elbow soreness, however. More often than not that doesn’t just go away and is indicative of worse things to come. I’d hold the backups in Daniel Hudson or Joe Biagini if your spent FAAB on them. For a week or so, just in case.
Craig Kimbrel is making rehab appearances in Iowa. He’ll be in Chicago sooner than later it seems should all go smoothly.
Wade Davis has had an eventful return from the IL. He blew a save early in the week and had a bumpy conversion Wednesday night with a solo homer and base runner stranded on second. We’ve been through this with him before. Part of owning Davis is taking some midseason lumps. I’m holding Scott Oberg in the event another IL stint is needed.
Roberto Osuna blew a save Wednesday, as well. He’s not unaccustomed to the occasional hiccup. This isn’t a thing unless more blow-ups happen close together.
