Clayton Kershaw went 4 and two-thirds innings, giving up three earned and 11 baserunners.  Six of those ducks on the pond were walks.  That’s 1-2-3-4-5-6 walks.  Versus the Pirates.  A team that had a .318 OBP last year.  Sure, this year they’re starting with Robot Jones, “I must kill the Queen,” but c’mon.  How did I convince myself a pitcher who can’t get through 5 innings was a good idea?  I blame all of you.  Someone should of said something.  And if you did say something, you should used more exclamation marks or a bigger font.  This is not your beautiful wife, this is not your beautiful house, this is a pitcher who walks the ballpark.  On the bright side — and let’s face it, we need a bright side since not all of us live on the first floor — Kershaw was very bad last April too.  He’ll get better.  Or at least I keep telling myself that.  Convincing, right?  No, really he will.  Right?  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Aaron Cook – 5 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 5 Ks.  Can you smell what the Cook is rocking?  Smells like Dwayne Johnson’s movie career.

Carlos Gonzalez – 2-for-5, Run scored.  I’m as impressed as everyone else with what he’s doing so far.  Like a dwarf standing in line, I smell a but. Yeah, random italicized voice, there’s a but.  His jumps and/or reads on his stolen base attempts have been poor at best.  Last year, his stolen base percentage wasn’t bad, but he was weak in the minors.  6 steals, 3 times caught in Triple A; 9 steals, 5 times caught in Double-A; 8 times caught in 23 attempts in Single-A… Do you want your leadoff man getting on and getting erased?  Probably not.

Miguel Olivo – 1-for-3, HR yesterday.  I know it’s frustrating when your catcher doesn’t start, but this was a day game after a night game.  Iannetta won’t play this game at any point in the season if Olivo’s healthy.  Could Olivo steal time?  Yup, uh-huh, yeppers.  But because he started this game is no indication of that.

Alcides Escobar – 1-for-2, 1 RBI.  Carlos Gomez does not belong in the two hole, even if it seems appropriate because of what comes out of the two hole.  Over/under for Alcides moving up to leadoff or the two hole is the end of April.  I’m taking the under.

Trevor Hoffman – Got his 2nd save yesterday.  When he was facing Todd Helton, I smelled fossil.

Ian Desmond – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs, HR yesterday.  Desmond can make it all right, brotha.

Cole Hamels – 5 IP, 2 ER, 5 Ks, 9 baserunners and the Win.  He’s just lucky there’s only one Ian Desmond.

Ryan Howard – Two games, two homers.  Howard’s not usually a fast starter.  If he stays hot in April, he could hit a lot of homers this year.  At least the Maris family hopes so.  We was duped!

Kelly Johnson – 2 HRs yesterday.  This is why you just draft guys and let them play.  Otherwise, you end up like this, “Grey, I dropped Desmond on Monday for Kelly Johnson, then dropped Johnson for EverCab.  Now I’m wondering if I should use my waiver claim for Desmond who I just dropped two days ago.  Or what do you think of Scutaro?”

Ian Kennedy – 5 IP, 3 ER, 8 Ks, 0 BBs.  Granted, it’s the Pads, but still Kennedy only really made one mistake — a three-run homer to Hairston.  Joba must be thinking of staying in ‘Zona for good next time he goes to Burning Man.

Kevin Correia – 6 IP, 4 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BBs.  Was beat by Kelly Johnson and Krispie Young going long.  In Petco, he would’ve won this game.  Once a hodgepadre, always a hodgepadre.

Ervin Santana – 6 IP, 4 ER.  Has looked bad and I think his elbow might still be hurting him.  I’m not getting caught in this guy’s free fall.  I’m in the exit row, my life vest is secure and I’m ready to help you secure your flotation device.

Mike Napoli – 1-for-4, RBI.  In related news, Jeff Mathis woke up yesterday with a horse’s head wrapped in a Snuggie.

Brandon Wood – 1-for-12 on the season.  Good to see he’s really running with the job.  If he’s not careful, soon the pine’s good get some more Wood.  There’s a pun in there somewhere, you find it.

Justin Duchscherer – 5 2/3 IP, 5 ER.  Duchs suchs.  Not loving these AL starters at all.  Where’s Latos?  I need him.  I’m feeling a “No Latos” intolerance.

Matt Garza – 8 IP, 1 ER, 9 Ks.  Okay, I’m not hating all my AL starters.

Milton Bradley – Homered then gave the game away with his defense.  Blame it on the Mariners’ Moose… Lost the ball in the lights that are whiter than Jerry Reuss…

Luke Hochevar – 7 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners.  He looked sharp last night and I’m ready to leap if he pitches this well again.  Though he’s pitched well before only to get torched right after, so I am not going to fall for the banana in the old tailpipe just yet.

Max Scherzer – 6 IP, 0 ER, 3 Ks, 3 baserunners.  In what sounded like a battle of Michael Chabon characters, Max Scherzer actually looked even better than Hochevar.

Fausto Carmona – 6 IP, 1 Hit, 3 ER… Wow, that’s not a bad line at– Wait a second, he also threw 6 walks and 1 strikeout.  Yeah, that’s not something you want to be part of.

Garrett Jones – Hit his 3rd homer yesterday.  I took him out of my lineup because he was facing a lefty.  Sonvabench!

Russell Martin – HR yesterday.  Martin only hit that homer to annoy all the fantasy baseballers (<–my Mom’s term) who skipped over him in favor of Napoli or Iannetta.  He’s in your head!

Josh Hamilton – Now 6 Ks in his last 7 ABs.  Maybe he’s missing ex-Rangers hitting coach, Rudy Jaramillo.  The second most influential Rudy in baseball.

Rich Harden – I’m sure when a lot of his owners saw he only threw three and two-thirds innings before he was removed that he must of been hurt.  Well, take out your piñatas, but don’t swing the sticks near Harden because he’s still healthy.  He struckout eight hitters and walked five so he was removed because of a high pitch count.  Kid gloves and all.

Vladimir Guerrero – HR yesterday.  I never thought the day would come when I owned a DH-Only hitter and was happy about it, but we have Vlad in more than one league and I’m kinda enjoying it.  I think at DH and in Arlington he can have a respectable year.

Kyle Blanks – Hit for the golden sombrero — 0-for-4, 4 Ks.  He was so bad that firing himself would’ve been both appropriate and punny.

J.J. Hardy – Hit his 2nd HR of the year.  It’s no mystery that a SS with 20 HR power has some fantasy value.

Vernon Wells – 2 HRs yesterday.  3 HRs for the year.  This resurrection is the best piece of Wells-authored science fiction since War of the Worlds.

Jenrry Mejia – Made his major league debut as he threw one inning and gave up one run in three hits.  The Mets seem to be taking the Joba route with him.  So far, similar results.

Leo Nunez – Blew the save as he walked in a run then balked in a run.  This was after a, uh, balky spring.  There’s no clear cut replacement for Nunez but it’s something to watch.

Jon Heyman – Obviously feeling upstaged by the Verducci Effect’s shortcomings, Heyman released his breakout candidates for 2010.  Some of the names are Jayson Werth, Justin Upton, B.J. Upton, Matt Kemp, Ubaldo Jimenez, Nolasco, Gallardo and Cano.  Great stuff, Jon!  I think Lincecum is on the cusp of being a good pitcher.  And who knows, maybe there’s something to this Pujols fellow.

Edgar Renteria – 5-for-5 or a hit for every decade he’s been alive.

John Bowker – 1-for-4, HR yesterday.  Here’s what I said last year, “Bowker’s proven more than capable in the minors.  This year’s Triple-A numbers are 82/21/83/.342/10 with more walks than strikeouts.  In NL-Only leagues, you should absolutely grab him.  In mixed leagues, I’d wait a few unless you’re absolutely hurting for power.”  And that’s me quoting me!  I’ll add that Bowker is a little long in the tooth and may be nothing more than a Quad-A player.

Eli Whiteside –  That’s who I buy my lox from.

  1. DrEasy says:

    And Bobby Jenks went kazaam!

In a vacuum: JJ Hardy or Sean-Rod?

  2. Jackie says:

You saved the best for last Grey. Eli Whiteside!

  3. The Staff Infection says:

And did you know that Matt Kemp is “on the cusp of becoming one of the better players in the league”? That’ll be the day.

  4. Beach Ninja says:

“Desmond can make it all right, brotha”

I just hope the 2 spot in the lineup is his constant.

  5. Terrence Mann says:

Warning to all you fantasy baseballers that are picking up Hochevar after last night’s gem. Hochevar is Charlize Theron in Monster. At first, Hochevar seems like an overlooked cold-blooded killer you want on your side. But take all the makeup off and it’s just another young face with long term prospects of getting railed – a lot.

    Consider yourself warned.

@Grey: I like everything about Kershaw for next year except: his P/IP. This year 17.5. Over 19 for his game tonight. People lament Torre not leaving him in longer, but with the high pitches per inning, he can’t. Your thoughts? Will Kershaw get that under control? Because, continuing 17.5 won’t cut it. (For reference, Lincecum at 15.3 and Greinke at 15.2.)

  7. joe from point pleasant says:

    hey grey,
good stuff today. quick question for ya… i punted SS in my draft (12 team H2H points keeper)

i currently own ian desmond, and although he homered and doubled yesterday, he has 2 errors and 5 k’s in 2 games. i like his upside alot but i also realized that furcal alcides and o-cab are available on waivers. furcal impressed me with the 2 sb tonite which made me wonder if hes 100% healthy for once.

should i stick with desmond or pickup someone else?

  8. pjtres says:

    can you rank em?

    hochevar, pavano, richard, aaron cook

    pavano walked 40 batters last year…in 200 IP…..
no walks last night either…what say ye?

  9. Steve says:

    Ervin struggling?

Same as it ever was. How long do we give him, Grey?

  10. Mr_Punch says:

    Kelly Johnson vs. Scott Sizemore

  11. MarkM says:

Desmond right before he hit his homer – “I have something to show them”

  12. Howard says:

@Grey I like when I read a baseball blog and learn something non-baseball related. Looking forward to reading Michael Chabon.

Think Kershaw should change his name to Wershaw?

Am trying to trade Russell Martin for McCutcheon even though he is my homeboy I don’t like to carry two catchers not named Mauer.

In another SAGNOF move I traded Brad Hawpe for Rajai Davis.

I was impressed with Desmond who is available in all my leagues.

Between Blanks and Davis they’re a collective 2/19. I know I have to be patient before I go into my Big Papi tirade! #%_(#

  13. Howard says:

@Simply Fred Interesting stat. No wonder he has so many no-decisions.

  14. Schlitzy says:

14 team league. Kelly J. dropped yesterday. I have sean rod at MI. Drop Sean for Kelly?

  15. Sos says:

I have corey hart in my rcl. Its one thing to suck but another to just not be playing. Hold tight or screw him and start looking for a replacement?

Also, I’m one of those desmond/evercab owners who’s been sonavabenched too much already. I’m serious brotha…

  16. giantJJ says:

bruce bochy makes owning john bowker frustrating. bochy will often make him sit against lefties though bowker can hit lefties. and he’ll take him out for a defensive replacement though bowker can play defense.

grey, i’ve been offered scott sizemore for wagner. obviously that’s out but would you counter his sizemore for my dotel or rauch?

  17. Kazmere says:

Re: last nights Frasor question: 10-team roto and I have Gonzalez, Aardsma, Morales, FrankFrank and Marmolade. I’d have to drop an offensive bench guy (Fowler or CarQ) or one of those closers to pick him up. Who gets the boot?

  18. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

“Like a dwarf standing in line…”

That’s one for the highlight reel.

@joe from point pleasant: It’s a cold day when you’re considering dropping someone the day after they homer and double. Why not kick back, enjoy a mojito, and congratulate yourself on your genius in nabbing Desmond?

Unless you are seriously steals-deficient, relax. Furcal is 46 and made of blown sugar.

    @DrEasy: Hardy.

    @Mr_Punch: Johnson.

@giantJJ: Maybe Dotel Motel, though shouldn’t we all wait until Sizemore’s actually done something?

  19. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Howard: P.S. re: Chabon — start with The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Awesome book.

  20. jj says:

I thought E. Santana looked pretty good. Got hurt by the homers, but otherwise pitched well.

    Was hitting 94.

  21. sean says:

    10/5×5/1 catcher/$1000 FAAB ($951 remaining)

I’m going to throw in a bid for Doumit to lose Iannetta. Ballpark for my max bid?

  22. Tony says:

@Howard: @Simply Fred: I dont think thats an interesting stat. Whats the difference over 7-8 innings if he throws 17.5 P/IP or 15.3? 2 Pitchers per inning? If Lincecum goes 7 innings its 107.1 pitches, if kershaw goes 7 its 122.5? 15 pitch difference is not making the diffence. So maybe it shorts him an innings since no coach is letting a future stud go 120 some pitches, BUT more than anything he needs to cut the walks. (yes i understand cutting the pitches per inning cuts BB, in theory) but what i’m saying is he needs to get more GB’s and more fly outs, quit trying to maybe finesse every hitter, quit working every count so deep, to the point he eventually creates a BB.

  23. Jif & The Choosy Mothers says:

I concur with Baron. Start with “…Kavalier and Clay.” Epic in scope. Great read.

Grey: Nice little Chabon line. So true.

  24. kujo says:

@grey: Always enjoying your posts, great work. So much for the brownnosing, here’s the quest:

Got a lil surplus in OF’s

    Jayson Werth
    B.J. Upton
    Carlos Quentin
    Adam Jones
    Robot Jones
    Colby -hitting-behind-Puuholli- Rasmus
    CarGo Rockies Edition
    Denard Span
    Jason Heyward

Alright. Somebody might call that an overload. Anyways, i gotta jam that into 4 spots. Who do you start for now (weekly scoring)? Rest of the lineup reads: Iannetta, Pujols, Phillips, JRoll, Zimmerman.

    Thanks a lot

  25. sean says:

@Tony: Losing an inning every 7 is a big deal when you’re talking about 170 IP instead of 200 IP.

  26. Bichette Happens says:

I’m leaning towards taking this deal. Pull the trigger?

    HIS Fielder/J. Upton

    MY Dempster/Carmona/Markakis/Garrett Jones/K. Blanks

in a 12 team H2H points league where my other pitchers are Johan, Nolasco, Billings, Kershaw, Slowey, Bedard on the DL.

  27. malacoda says:

    Told you SI sucked!

  28. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Bichette Happens: i really see no reason not to take that deal.

  29. Paulie Allnuts

    Paulie Allnuts says:

@Simply Fred: What did the War Room say about Gregerson ? :)

Bad News: Kelly Johnson and Robot Jones Sonofabenched.
Good News: Had Ian Desmond in Kelly’s slot.
Was just about to drop Johnson to pick up Sizemore. Yeah, you had me pegged in your comments.

Grey – One of your frequent Commenters referred the other day to Robot Jones not being able to break the First Law:

“A robot may not injure his fantasy owner, or, through inaction, allow a fantasy owner to come to harm.”

By the Way, the friend of Asimov who contributed to the development of the 3 Laws was Randall Garrett.

Nice little addition on Yahoo – they now have this fancy icon next to players who had nice moments that day. Kelly’s first dinger was a bomb into deep center. Didn’t know that he had that kind of power.

The John Heyman column was either hilarious, or upsetting, depending on your perspective. I chose the latter, because he gets paid good money for that crap. Any one of your frequent commenters could write a better column.

Valverde blew a save. Which is typical for my RCL squad so far.

One question – Is Neimann a good play today. My second question about Santana was already asked by another Commenter.

Thanks, as always, for making my morning a bit brighter

  30. ThePoonTycoon says:

grey, care to evaluate on ervin santana? i didn’t see him pitch (east coast thing), but i was encouraged by the box score (1.00 WHIP – 5H, 1BB), and it looked like all the damage was 2 2-run bombs. and i read that his velocity was sitting in the mid-90s, versus last year when it sat in the low-90s. just curious to hear your take, cause i have ervin as a #5/bench SP in all 3 of my leagues.

  31. GopherDay says:

@Bichette Happens: Take it before the guy cancels! That deal is solid!!

  32. GopherDay says:

Vlad is now a career .400 hitter in Arlington, a combined 80 for 200

  33. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Paulie Allnuts: desmond’s bomb was to straight away dead center too. both he and kelly showing off the muscles.

  34. Paulie Allnuts

    Paulie Allnuts says:

@Tony: @Simply Fred: I think my team is on the path to scoring a “perfect ten.” I ‘m thinking of making that my goal, and then coming back to win the title. Would be the greatest comeback in Roto history.

  35. Tony says:

@sean: haha roto talk. All i’m saying is lowering his walk rate is more important that lowering his P/IP. Essentially that should lower the P/IP, but he needs to not try and win every battle himself vs. hitters and let his defense help him.

  36. Howard says:

@Baron @Jif Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll definitely check it out if I can tear myself away from MLB Extra Innings!

  37. greenmountaincoffee says:

Any concern with Andrus following bad spring? Would you rather have Desmond/Hardy/Tejeda at SS?

  38. Calogero says:

The only way Blanks should get fired is if you have Lee in front of him.

  39. mc serch says:

@Howard: Agree with the Baron, Kavalier and Klay is amazing….Mysteries of Pittsburgh is a good and different read, the book is far better than the film.

@joe from point pleasant: see Grey’s comment about K. Johnson….give Desmond some leash…he’s got crazy talent and may just put it together right from the jump. You just may have an All-Star on your hands in a shallow position that you punted! Don’t eff it up now. I picked him up when Kinsler went AWOL after realizing that ID stole six bases this Spring. If he sucks by May you can prob still get one of the guys you mentioned. It’s one of the Razzball Golden Rules….in the late rounds (and waiver pickups), go for the upside!

  40. Jif & The Choosy Mothers says:

@Howard: I understand. I love to read great books but baseball season – and the MLB Network – in particular are going to get in the way for awhile.

Oh, and then there’s the family and what not. Nearly forgot.

  41. sean says:

@Tony: Agreed. His pitching style is pretty Japanese in that he sees it as dishonorable to hit bats. I’d be down with him nibbling if he had impeccable control, but with his stuff, he’s gotta learn to throw his best pitch and dare the opponent to hit it.

  42. Tony says:

@sean: ya…. he’ll learn, he’s young, i mean its only been one start so i dont wanna say he’s not gonna learn this year, but he might be a year away still…

  43. HalLeeDay34 says:

I think I’m ready to get on the Hochevar bandwagon but I’m looking for some advice to push me either way. I have Dexter Fowler who is my only bench position player, and apparently part time player for Colorado as well. Luke is a first round talent and I definitely could have used his performance to offset that Kershaw brilliance we all saw. (Side note on Clayton-Dude looked awful, couldn’t put two consecutive batters away, and doesn’t give up a run after the third batter of the game. Stuff is clearly there he’s just a frustrating guy to own on those nights) Back on track though, just seeing what people think of Hochevar at the top of the rotation with Grienke. Worth dropping Fowler for?
Also Raffy Furcal looked pretty solid last night. Think he continues to get on base in a dangerous Dodger lineup?

  44. Van Hammersly says:

The Amazing Adventures of Hochevar and Jobacum!

In a 12-team H2H league with deep benches, I’ve got Beckham picking up 2B eligibility by Saturday. Have enjoyed Kelly Johnson keeping his slot warm (eww) this week, but all along figured I’d drop Johnson for a waiver SP or a bat for better depth. Drop Johnson for Tall Chris Young once Beckham takes over 2B for me?

  45. Euroalien says:

With both Kershaw and Ervin S. on my roster, how long do I wait before pulling the plug on one or both of them? I have Cueto and Thornton on the bench…… Best available FA’s, Chris Young, Barry Zito and Randy Wells (slim pickings for sure……..) I’m not prone to panic so I’m willing to give them another start or two…. especially Kershaw but yesterday was ugly!

  46. Jarrad says:

The real question is, does Joba don fuzzy boots and pixie wings while @ Burning Man?

  47. Mikey boy324 says:

Grey you think Ervin looked that bad that your ready to drop him?

  48. jj says:

I know grey disagrees, but I thought Ervin looked really good.

He started to tire a little in the 4th, which is understandable because of the time he missed in ST.

But looked real good first 3 innings, and really only got hurt by the 2 hrs.

For the record I don’t own him, so I’m not biased. But I am trying to trade for him real cheap.

  49. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Euroalien: i’d like to hear more about santana before i make judgments. i mean, he only allowed 6 base runners, and reports say his velocity was in the mid-90s (like in 2008), compared to the low-90s last season. i’d hardly say 6IP, 4ER, 4K, 1.00 WHIP is a cause to drop a guy, and don’t quite understand why grey seems so down on him. granted i didn’t see him pitch last night, but just seems if he was really that bad it would show a bit more in the box score.

either way, i’d need to see a whole lot more bad out of both kershaw and santana before i’d drop them for young/zito/wells types.

Banana in the tailpipe: probably the funniest “white guy” impression by a black comedian ever. Man, remember when Eddie Murphy was funny? Good times…

Speaking of Good Times, I was totally one of those owners who picked up Desmond (to fill-in for Reyes, didn’t draft him), then dumped him when I saw he wasn’t batting 2nd, then got pissed when I saw he’d smacked a dinger, then remembered that I’d replaced him with DY-NO-MITE Hardy.

  51. Tony says:

@Euroalien: pull the plug? its day 4 today…. they’ve pitched once… Ervin obviously should have a shorter leash, but you can’t drop Kershaw whatsoever….

    easy people, so panicky….

  52. Cain Fan says:

No love for my boy Cain?? He was one aaron rowand catch away from allowing 0 ER and getting the W. I know its the Astros but he looked solid. Also thoughts on Peavy? I didnt see the game but was surprised he only lasted 5.

  53. BSA says:

Well, what a pleasure it was watching my early season ERA and WHIP blow up in the last three nights with FHer, Shields, Peavy, and Soria laying a big steamy dump on week one.

Weeks like this my trigger finger gets itchy!

  54. ThePoonTycoon says:

if i didn’t already own santana in all my leagues as my #5/bench/matchup SP with a lot of upside, i’d hope to be in a league where he was dropped so i could scoop him for cheap.

  55. Howard says:

12 team H2H need to trade for an outfielder (so far shooting Blanks as my 3rd OF (autopick!)
Some possibilties Vmart or Morneau or AGonz for Holliday (I have Montero), Hanley for Braun, Montero for Rasmus or Pence?

  56. mauledbypandas says:

Kershaw needs to stop nibbling and just throw strikes. He walked the pitcher.. TWICE! Ugh that was a yell at the tv moment.

  57. jj says:

    Which side Andrus/Reimold or Hardy/Bourn?

  58. Jarrad says:

    @jj: Hardy/Bourn

  59. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Howard: i’d move montero for pence if you could.

i have pence as a util guy and it has sucked him get off to an awful start, but it’s just 3 games

  60. Tony says:

@ThePoonTycoon: ya i’m waiting on pence too, but he is a streaky guy. Just disappointing after that spring he doesn’t come out and start well!

  61. Donald Trump says:

I watched Hochevar last night because I have Scherzer and wanted to watch him. Hochevar was at 94-97mph last night (yes, a few 97’s), and I know the radar gun was right because Scherzer was at 93 all night. The announcers made a comment about Hochevar’s new delivery that is designed to give him more torque and velocity, but they really didn’t try to explain why a guy who in the past threw 92 was now averaging 95+. And there was major sink on the ball which induced a ton of weak grounders. Now, if he was throwing 92 and had the results he had, I would stay away. But when he is reaching 97, you have to GRAB HIM RIGHT NOW.

  62. GTG says:

I knew the razzball community was smarter than that of the average roto blog readers, but now you’re dropping Chabon references? And people actually “get it” and proceed to recommended specific books? Wow, I’ve been lost at sea and finally found my home port. Long live razzball!!! And go mini mini donkey.

  63. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @jj: Hardy/Bourn, fo’ sho’.

  64. GopherDay says:

I own Kershaw AND Santana in one of my leagues…ugh!

  65. Beau says:

Drop Ervin for Hochevar? How about Bedard or Kazmir?

Also, AlfoSoriano got dropped in one of my leagues with a shallow offensive unit (3 of, 1 util, no mi/ci) with the likes of big papi, hawpe, vladi, russ martin, reimold on waivers, is soriano worth a claim for one of those pitchers. My OF is grandy, adam jones, denard, and juan pierre.

  66. buschfan says:

I don’t think any of these guys are a good option but who do you think has the best chance of stealing the closer job between McClellan, Guerrier, and Baez?

  67. Beau says:

BTW, loving the video highlight replay thing that yahoo has now, im loving me some robot replay putting the HR ball a few bounces into the river.

  68. Dan says:

I watched the Angels game on my free extra innings preview. Santana had a real nice fastball stuck at 94 all game and a sharp slider. I thought he was throwing too many sliders though, left one low but over the plate for Morneau to pound, and then I thought he got tired in the 5th (though he had a clean 6th). Also, the lack of an effective third pitch meant he had trouble finishing off batters (got a little predictable), and the result was a lot of 3-2 counts.

Definitely a keeper on the bounceback list, from what I saw last night.

  69. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Beau: don’t drop ervin for hochevar yet. i’d maybe drop bedard since he’s injured if you can’t store him in a DL spot for 2 months.

and alfonso is not worth a waiver when all those other guys are sitting out there on the wire.

  70. Jarrad says:

@buschfan: I’m thinking that you gotta go w/ Guerrier out of the three. McClellan has proven himself to be valuable as a MR, and I think Motte is ahead of him on the depth chart anyway. I don’t think Madson will have to give up his spot to anyone other than Lidge…

  71. ThePoonTycoon says:

having now gone and read some stuff on hochevar’s new velocity improving delivery and how his fastball was sitting in the ~96 mph range last night, i grabbed him in 2 deeper leagues where i was thin on pitching. in both i dropped maybin, who has looked lost thus far, and who isn’t my favorite prospect anyway (15 HRs and 20 SBs in your OF isn’t winning a league, and that’s about the max you’d expect this year from maybin).

  72. Chomp Samba says:

It’s fitting that Clayton Kershaw’s initials are C.K. because I was yelling F.U. at him all night.

  73. Sos says:

Aplogies if this was already asked: throw masterson @cws. Also, drop morrow for kennedy? 12 team

  74. Howard says:

@ThePoonTycoon I’ll try but I don’t think it’ll fly. I may have to sweeten the pot a bit. I guess it all depends on need. I try to target teams that are sitting on OF and have mediocre catching. Montero did really well for me last year. I don’t how many games he’ll lose to Chris Snyder this year?

  75. GopherDay says:

@ThePoonTycoon: In my dynasty league, I had Hochevar on my minor league squad. I dropped him for newer prospects. Now, because my team has weak pitching, he’s on my major league team. What goes around comes around.

  76. ThePoonTycoon says:

@GopherDay: ha, yeah in my 5 man keeper league, i scooped both braun and pence when they where both still a few weeks away from getting called up, ended up riding braun all the way to a title that season, and trading pence for pitching help. i have had braun kept since 2007, but this year pence managed to find his way back home.

  77. Jif & The Choosy Mothers says:

@GTG: “Mysteries of Pittsburgh” and “Wonder Boys” also very good but I’d be remiss if I didn’t recommend “Summerland” to this crowd.

Sure it’s tailored to “young adults” but it’s about baseball (it’s a fantasy novel specifically about kids who save the world by playing baseball). Pretty darn good really – even for old adults.

Still, “Kavalier & Clay” is his opus magnum, in my opinion.

  78. royce! says:

That Blanks joke was classic. After reading, “…appropriate and punny” I had to look back to who you were discussing firing oneself, and read “Blanks.” Ha! Firing Blanks! Okay, a narrative of how the joke worked on me is neither instructive nor funny, but I’ve gotten this far so I’m going to post it anyway.

Maybe Kershaw will pitch better when they’re into the blue again after the money’s gone.

  79. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

@Paulie Allnuts: As horrendous as the 81+ ERA that Gregerson gave you, I have the highest team ERA of 6.097. This after the War Room projected me with the LOWEST ERA! That’s why they play the games! :-)

  80. Beau says:

@Simply Fred: …and thats why they play more than 3 of ’em.

  81. BKK says:

Do any of these make sense?

    Ibanez/Frank2 to get Nelson Cruz
    Quentin/Frank2 to get Cruz
    Pence/Frank2 to get Cruz

Is Cruz going to be that much better than any of those outfielders?

  82. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

@Tony: A couple of issues regarding the P/IP:

    1. If a pitcher is a veteran, say CC, who can stand the wear of consistent 120+IP per game, then maybe they get away with it. With a young pitcher who is facing an innings limit it is more of a detriment.

    2. Being young, having a limit, and seldom getting out of the 5th, he has less chance of picking up wins. The pitchers that run it through seven I think do get more oppotunities for wins (though I have no stats on that).

  83. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

@Beau: Thanks! Let’s go get ’em today boys!

  84. Brian says:

@BKK: I would do the Ibanez deal if you have other closers to use. Cruz gives you the same power as Ibanez plus 20 steals and more upside.

  85. Nate Marcum says:

I also think CK is fitting because he was full of balls last night!

  86. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

Alright… someone dropped Frasor in one of my league, AND he cleared waivers (I wasn’t using up a claim on him). I must own him, but can’t quite decide how. Calling all Razzhands… calling all Razzhands… I’m not carrying any extra bats, so how do I get Frasor when this is my current staff?

SP: F-Her, Greinke, Nolasco, Scherzer, Slowey, Latos
RP: Bell, Marmol, Aardsma, Nunez, Gonzalez, Lindstrom

Option 1: Wait for the MN start (10:05 tonight), then drop Slowey
Option 2: Wait for the SD start (8:10 Saturday), then drop Latos
    Option 3: Drop Latos now

Option 1, Frasor may not be around until 10:05 tonight. Option 2, Frasor probably has zero chance of lasting until Saturday night. Option 3, if Latos throws well on Saturday and someone else picks him up, I’m a be pretty upset.

  87. BSA says:

Hey Joe West – Shut up and do your job. Your homeplate ump did his, you shut him up, no need to go to the press with your opinion. Unless the players can give their opinions of you and your music.

  88. Kazmere says:

Martin, Manny and Ethier getting a rest today.

  89. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

@Awesomus Maximus: Can’t help you with whom to drop (nor why you need another RP), but I don’t think Frasor will be there long enough to wait–some folks must be desperate with you hording the RPs already. If you want him, you gotta go now.

  90. Nate Marcum says:

@Awesomus Maximus: I would definitely not drop Slowey. I would actually think latos would be the way to go…I think that staff should be dominating BTW.

  91. GopherDay says:

@Awesomus Maximus: You know there’s a A&E Show called ‘Hoarders’ You should be on it, you hoard closers. Its an attachment disorder, maybe you didn’t have enough closers on your team growing up, maybe you were abandoned by your pet gerbil, whatever the case may be, you need help. Don’t pick up Frasor, you don’t need him. Obviously the people in your league don’t care enough about saves because they are letting you get 6 closers with a possible 7th. Hold off! You can do it! We all believe in you!!

  92. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Jackie: Hehe

    @Beach Ninja: Ha!

    @Terrence Mann: Nice analogy.

@Simply Fred: Well, was being somewhat facetious, but yeah.

@joe from point pleasant: Desmond for a bit of everything. Alcides for steals.

    @pjtres: Richard, Pavano, Cookie…

    @Steve: One more chance.

    @MarkM: Ha!

@Howard: Wershaw sounds like a Chabon character too.

    @Schlitzy: I’d want Kelly.

    @Sos: Lose him.

    @Kazmere: Fowler

    @sean: $10

@Jif & The Choosy Mothers: Thanks!

@kujo: C’mon, man. Trade some guys. Jayson Werth, B.J. Upton, Adam Jones and Robot Jones.

    @Paulie Allnuts: That’s interesting. I wouldn’t own Niemann.

@ThePoonTycoon: He’s getting one more chance then I’m jumping ship.

    @GopherDay: Yup

    @greenmountaincoffee: Nope

@HalLeeDay34: Furcal could surprise, I guess, but whatever. You don’t need extra MIs. I’d hold tight for now on Hochevar.

    @Van Hammersly: Sure

    @Jarrad: Hehe

@Mikey boy324: Giving him another game, but preparing to bail.

@Cain Fan: Yeah, Cain should dominant the Astros. Same with Peavy and the Indians.

    @Beau: No, and nope.

    @Chomp Samba: That’s hilarious.

@Sos: I’d drop Masterson for Kennedy.

    @royce!: Ha!

    @Nate Marcum: Ha!

@Awesomus Maximus: I think losing Nunez would be my third option, but I wouldn’t do anything other than get in a deeper league where it wasn’t so easy to have 6 closers.

    @GopherDay: Ha!

  93. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

@Awesomus Maximus: Repeat after me: “My name is Fred (Awesome Maximus). I am a closer addict….”

  94. Tony says:

    @Awesomus Maximus: You can’t drop slowey….

What did you guys think of NOLASCO’s outting last night? I was just watching updates, didn’t see anything, seemed like he was GOLD til the 6th or 7th and then the wheels kinda fell off, a couple walks then the middle relief came in and ruined his win… thanks marlins middle relief!

  95. Chris says:

Was that Heyman article written in March 2009??

  96. Tony says:

    @Simply Fred: fred you’re a closer whore, there i said it….. lol

  97. danimal35 says:

Kelly Johnson, Sean Rod, Blanks, or Fra-Gu???

    Position eligibility not that important.

  98. Chris says:

I just traded Werth for Danks/Beckham. Note – I did this the day before Opening Day, it wasnt a panic move of any sort. I needed a 2b, left me with an thin OF of Heyward, Quentin, Borbon and Blanks.

  99. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

    @Tony: Better than a slut… :-)

  100. jj says:

That Defense is going to kill all the Florida pitchers.

He looked good though, til he got gassed.

  101. PaddyTwoTimes says:

    @ Grey

Like the naked gun reference. One of the best movies ever. Who would have thought Nordberg had murder inside him? Not me.

  102. BKK says:

@Brian: I do have extra closers and I got Ibanez for free after a guy in my league dropped him. Don’t ask, the guy is nuts, we all laugh at him.

  103. Lava says:

How seriously should we take Robot Jones?

If we take him seriously, 30-40 HR is certainly not out of line. I’m doing a final draft this weekend, and wonder if I should go for him. He’s the only player out of the hot starts that really intrigues me enough to change up a draft.

  104. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

Clement and R.Martin sitting. Sheeesh, might as well have Napoli…

  105. Josh says:

The Heyman article actually makes me really mad. Matt Kemp to break out? He won a gold glove and silver slugger last year. He *could* do okay this year…

Justin Upton’s wikipedia page goes year by year. The headline of the section about last season “2009: Breakout Year”.

I wonder if Heyman thinks this is the year Mauer finally breaks out?

  106. martin says:

Fowler, Snider, Escobar, Headley, Rasmus, Sean Rod, Kelly Johnson

Can you rank them in order?

  107. Tony says:

@Simply Fred: haha yes closer sluts are just dirty.

@jj: so you think it was a combo of him just being gassed and the D? I’m sure he was overthrowing, first game juice flowing thru the veins, pitchers always over throw….

I’m really hoping for big things from him. Then i read something yesterday about he wants to get 200 K’s and only walk 25? I HATE it when players say crap like that, i just feel like they need to shut up and PLAY. Let their arm do the talking. Maybe I am taking it out of context, but he referenced or the commentor wherever did as something that ONLY a handful of pitchers have EVER done…. straight up jinx is what i say….

  108. Mikey boy324 says:

@Grey: Well his next start is gonna be at Yankee stadium for there home opener so you might wanna give him 2 more the homeruns are concerning but I thought he looked better then he did last year and showed more velocity on his fastball I would be a lil more patient with him…

  109. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

@GopherDay: LMAO. All of the comments were funny (and helpful, but funny is more important). It’s all part of my master pitching plan, to rack up saves early, then trade closers for mid-top tier SPs. I may be going a bit overboard in this league, however… thank you for the intervention. I just hate to see a guy with a full-time closing gig (regardless of how tenuous his grasp on that gig is) sitting on the FA list.

  110. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@kujo: Yes, dude, seriously: Trade an OF for a catcher. Go get McCann or someone. No need to roll the dice on Ianetta when you’ve got eighteen good OFs on the bench every week.

@Bichette Happens: Yes yes do that deal yes. Assuming you are getting Fielder/JUpton. If you are still reading this and the deal is not done go do the deal now stop reading why are you still reading?

    Nice handle, btw.

  111. GTS says:

Kevin Correia or Ian Kennedy or wait?

  112. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

If I use a more clever name will I get replied to?

I just traded Werth for Danks/Beckham. Note – I did this the day before Opening Day, it wasnt a panic move of any sort. I needed a 2b, left me with an thin OF of Heyward, Quentin, Borbon and Blanks.

Do you think I will lose this trade?

  113. Sal says:

Drop carlos gomez for Drew Stubbs? Gomez is really surplus commodity and my league penalizes K’s so he is not that attractive…

  114. Stephen says:

Jenrry Mejia struggled at Double-A last year and should be back there and not in the majors. He isn’t completely ready. He’s still a thrower and not a pitcher. His fastball is awesome (tops 98 mph) but his slider is inconsistent. During the Arizona Fall League, he was lit up to the tune of 12.56 ERA with 13 walks in 14 innings. I don’t like what the Mets are doing with Mejia and would stay away.

  115. Tom Emanski says:

@Sal: Definitely drop Gomez for Stubbs

Grey, LOFL at the Wells-authored science fiction joke!

  116. Beau says:

Please rank: Tejada, Barmes, JJ Hardy for my ss/mi spots.

If Tejada gains 3B elgibility soon i could work him in at 3b between headley and crush davis. No room at CI with prince, migcab, and robot. Thanks.

  117. dingers says:

    hochevar or correia?

  118. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Awesomus Maximus: i’d probably take frasor over lindstrom. but i wouldn’t drop any of your SPs for him given your 6 other closers.

as far as the master plan, i’m pretty sure most of my league would see right through me and refuse to deal me anything worthwhile knowing what i was obviously up to, and knowing that i’m already in position to win saves and if i need to make up SP stats, i can drop my RPs for some hodgepadre instead of them trading me scott baker for leo nunez.

  119. I still can’t believe Im starting Pineiro. Can’t find anyone to replace him with.

  120. Tony says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: ya i think in the end you’re gonna lose, Beckham has to be studly for you to win. You should have just plugged in a kelly johnson, ian desmond or another waiver wire 2B find…. now your OF is suspect, you’re banking on 3 rookies and a guy who’s been hurt last year? Phewww thats a tall order.

  121. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Beau: Tejada, Hardy, Barmes. I would stick it out with Davis before sliding Tejada over.

  122. Kazmere says:

@Awesomus Maximus: I hear ya! Picked up Frasor too. Someone panic dropped him and he was sitting out there on the FA. I’ve got 6 closers now and see a few other managers rolling with only 2 closers– tandems of fragile or unproven/iffy guys like Rauch and Franklin. Just waiting for the offers to arrive….. I plan on celebrating my first trade with a daquiri for Grey!

  123. Tony says:

@Kazmere: @Awesomus Maximus: I have a TON of closers in my one league, i just know too many times a guy loses his job or gets hurt, then your SOLID 3 closers goes down to 2 closers…. i’d rather have 5 or 6 and then if i lose one… no biggie. AND… there’s always the possibility of trading them.

  124. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Kazmere: i hope that you are hoarding motte and guerria or whatever his name is in minn too then, cause with every RP that loses a job, someone takes it, and often that person performs plenty well enough through the season that there is no reason to trade for a big name proven guy.

in my 3 leagues i have some combo of dotel, rauch, frasor, gonzalez, and madsen on all of them. well i have wagner in 1 because i drafted him way way late and marmol in an auction cause he was dirt cheap.

the point is that those low end guys will more than provide me with the saves i need, and if they don’t, i’ll be monitoring the guys threatening to take their job and pick them up before they actually move into the closing role if needed.

  125. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: Sadly, I must concur with Tony.

Don’t love two-fer-ones early in the season, where you’re giving up the one. Werth is a 4th round talent, and who knows where Beckham ends up after this year? Even if he has a great year, he’s unlikely to equal Werth’s, er, worth. Danks is a good pitcher, but there will be others like him available as FAs. Right now wouldn’t you rather have Werth and Kelly Johnson than Danks and Beckham?

Basically, my rule(s) of thumb are: Don’t trade early. And if you’re going to trade early, don’t do two-fers where you’re giving up the best player.

  126. Have I mentioned I love this MLB Network? Its not as good as having the whole package but all these free extra games in HD, Im onboard.

  127. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: Oh, and p.s. If you click that little arrow thingee on a post it will auto-fill-in the @person part — and lets nosy bastards like me easily find the original post you are replying to. As in the case of Rollie v. @Beau

@Baron Von Vulturewins: like this. Magic!

    that is all

  128. Trade offer, please rate: His Hanley+Carlos Lee for my Miggy Cab and Granderson. This guy has been trying to get Miggy off me since we drafted. I dont think its good enough, in fact never mind im rejecting.

  129. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Tony: guess i’d rather load up on hitters/SPs and see who pans out, cause i know there will always be someone taking over a closer job who is sitting on the wire later in the season, whereas most of you SPs and hitters with potential are serving as someone’s ‘reach’ or a later round flier. if frasor loses the job, if your league doesn’t have holds, downs and/or gregg should be on the wire, just pick them up and plug them in. and if someone else in your league that doesn’t count holds is hoarding scott downs, then he’s only hurting himself by taking away a spot on his bench he could use on a flier for a travis snider or someone, you know, a guy who could actually make a huge difference in fantasy baseball, not a guy who might at some point serve as your 5th or 6th closer if someone else screws up enough.

  130. Simply Fred

    Simply Fred says:

@ThePoonTycoon: That works if you are the only shark circling. In my RCL, plenty of sharks lurking for the next fill-in. Should be interesting watching the frenzy.

  131. Eric C. says:

I was offered Ellsbury for my Carlos Gonzales/Nolasco sauce. I would jump on this but my current OFers include granderson/lind/pacman jones/bourbon and my frontline pitchers include beckett/garza/price. So my already great offense would become even more offense but my iffy pitching takes a downgrade. Would I be better off counter-proposing Carlos/Nolasco for Upton/Oswalt? Seeing an opportunity to sell high on Cargo (who I think of as Hunter Pence 2.0 anyways) here

  132. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Elijah: convince him to do hanley for miggy straight up. ha. i’m not a big fan of carlos lee or granderson, so i would probably consider them a wash, but hanley >>>>> miggy

  133. @Simply Fred:

Yeah in my RCL league I was *HAPPY* to get Frasor as a 3rd closer as there was such a run. The other thing is, if you’re hoarding, it means someone is short, and sooner or later the phone rings.

  134. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Simply Fred: perhaps, but there are so many roster spots that can be used on prospective closers in your normal 12 team leagues. and if i have 2-3 closers doing their jobs, i’m not circling looking for a prospective closer who might get saves, cause i’m gonna be waiving a hitter or SP that i feel like has good potential or is a valuable insurance policy for a starter just to hoard a 4th/5th/6th closer.

  135. BTW, about that trade, I have Morneau sitting at CI on that team which is why the guy probably targeted me in the first place.

  136. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Elijah: or you are short elsewhere, and when injury/underachievement shows its ugly head, you don’t have anything except waiver wire fodder and this collection of closers and could-be closers to replacement them with. and if i come to you looking for a closer, i’m not gonna be happy to trade for leo nunez or matt lindstrom unless i am sending you spare parts. if you want a quality SP or hitter for leo nunez then i’m gonna let you have your closer party and move on to someone else.

  137. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Baron Von Vulturewins: we got a first timer here!

I did pickup KJ prior to yesterday’s bombs, but I was also lacking a quality CI (which Beckham also satisfies). I guess I did over-value Blanks and Heyward (mostly Blanks). When all (injuries) is said and done…

    CI – Beckham/Berkman
    Reyes/A. Escobar
    UTIL – Blanks/A. Escobar/Berkman

Not too shabby… (14 team league)

  138. @ThePoonTycoon:

Which is pretty much what happened when I floated Haren as a trade option when my buddy wanted a Closer and I said how about a player and closer…He ended up picking up Morales…

  139. T-BZA says:

My boy Lastings is out of the Bucs lineup today, methinks this will be a regular occurrence against tough righties…there goes another post-hype sleeper :(

  140. Tony says:

@ThePoonTycoon: ya i’m a hawk on the ww, but in my two leagues i’m one of 12 hawks… not as easy as it sounds to make a pickup, you literally have to get the info and be on the comp and make the ADD or the guys gone….

@Simply Fred: haha i concur fred.

@Elijah: yep…. guys in my yahoo league have expressed they dont want my closer deals LOL, but someday they’re going to call and i’m going to ask alot. OR i’m going to at least sell like a used car salesman!

  141. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Eric C.: I like the sell high on Carlos but I’d try to keep Nolasco out of that deal rather than weakening ur weakness (SPs). Trade Price if any SP

  142. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

Any way to auto-refresh this or simply hit refresh?

  143. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Eric C.: Don’t like this deal for you. You’ve got plenty of speed already.

Counteroffer is better, especially if you’re targeting J-Ups, not Bossman Junior. If Bossman Junior, do not proceed. And why ship out Nolasco for Oswalt, unless you own a time machine and are planning to travel back and assemble a team in 2005.

Can’t you just flip CarGo for something useful, rather than mucking it up by tossing in extra players?

  144. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

Manny doesn’t play day games anymore? Baseball literally has become a “babying games” contest.

  145. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Eric C.: P.S. Edited to add: There’s a very good chance that Nolasco is the best pitcher on your staff by the end of the year.

  146. Eric C. says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: Thanks. Def hesitant to make a weakness a even bigger problem.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Oops. Forgot to mention it was for Bossman. Will not proceed. Def got a point about mucking it up with extra players. Thanks for the advice.

  147. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

Hmmm. Jeff Clement not starting against C-Bills.

The whole reason I have Jeff Clement at C is that, as a 1Bman in real life, he’s supposed to play everyday.

Who’s getting the PT today, putting Clement on the bench? Ryan Church. Robot is at first base.

Don’t make me think about the Pirates.

  148. Anyone know why Ethier is sitting today? Knee trouble or a portent of things to come with Garrett Anderson in the mix?

  149. Jo says:

I currently have Kyle Blanks… should I own Blanks, Rios, or Rasmus??

  150. @Mark Geoffriau:

Its just Torre resting him vs a lefty starter, he wants to use his bench more this season it seems.

  151. Grey

    Grey says:

@Jo: They do different things. Blanks is power, Rasmus is some power and speed and upside…

  152. Seems like Furcal is on one of his streaks…

  153. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Jo: I’d say Rios with the way Blanks started. But it could be painful to watch Blanks blow up after you drop him. Rasmus is 3rd in that mix for me. A little pop, a little speed, not enough of either

  154. malacoda says:

Robot Jones….he crushed it last year, this spring, and now already has 3 hr. His Rosie wheel is greased and free spinning. He has nothing left to prove, bench him at your own peril.

  155. @Grey: @Elijah: Thanks muchly. I’m sure Ethier is exhausted what with those 2 games already under his belt.

  156. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@malacoda: I may have missed the boat here on 1) Robot Jones in any of my leagues and 2) the reason behind this “Robot Jones” nickname. Feel free to describe its origin.

  157. Denys says:

a bit ticked about Montero not having an everyday job… is it smarter to grab Clement at this point?

  158. @Denys:

I wouldnt worry too much about it, Montero should get about 2/3 of the starts.

  159. kev says:

what d’yall think of neftali feliz?

was offered adrian/feliz for granderson/heath bell. deal?

  160. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Mark Geoffriau: Yeah, seriously.

@RollieFingersMyAsh: He doesn’t eat or sleep he only hit homers and steals bases. See Three Laws of Robotics for further discussion.

  161. Grey

    Grey says:

    @kev: I’d want Grandy’s side, but it’s close.

  162. mc serch says:

@Awesomus Maximus: Other than OCD tendancies when it comes to junky closers, why do you need Frasor as a 7th closer again? DO NOT DROP SLOWEY. I wouldn’t drop Latos for a 7th closer either, but if someone just HAD to go, it would be Latos.

  163. Eddy says:

Penny is looking pretty good today, hopefully he doesn’t implode.

  164. jj says:

Billingsley topping out at 89 mphs.

Something wrong or just working his way up.

    Very lucky so far.

  165. Grey

    Grey says:

@jj: Yeah, non-stop working out of trouble.

  166. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

    Billingsley –NOOO!!!!!

  167. Dingo says:

@Paulie Allnuts: Yeah, I noticed that sweet little video play icon in Yahoo as well. Then I saw the note on my league’s main page:

“Daily Fantasy Video Highlights are now available for $9.95. See all the action right from your roster page all season long! Check it out now. Your free preview period ends on April 18th.”

I guess they had to do something to make money after they made their daily stat tracker thingy free. The Yahoo! giveth and the Yahoo! taketh away…

  168. Tony says:

@Dingo: I dont think there’s anyone buying that! go to youtube and see anything they’re posting for free…. thats a joke. HA

  169. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

30 man roster, 16 team league. What 2 do you start today for 2 open OF spots?

    S. Rodriguez
    C. Guillen

  170. BSA says:

Geez – Talk about Billingsley bearing down to pull two quick SOLs to get out of bases loaded jam.

  171. bostonaccent says:

I think CBills and Kershaw heard that Rihanna went after Kemp because he has big balls and misunderstood.

  172. Jo says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: Yeah, that’s the thing… i’m afraid he’ll just blow up right when I drop him. i think i’ll give him another week before i do anything

  173. Nathan says:

Good news everyone! The nationals are batting their starting shortstop in the 2-hole today!

  174. Euroalien says:

@jj: @ThePoonTycoon: @Tony: Thanks for the feedback guys. I’m not panicing at all, just asking the question….. I’ve been trigger happy in the past and have gotten burned (Butler & Morales last season) – so I’m going to be patient this year. (Or try…..) I’m not ready to drop either one yet, but reading Grey’s comments on both Kershaw & Ervin S., I figured someone needed to ask the question.

  175. Tony says:

garko is texas’s 3 hitter? really?

  176. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Grey: No, we have not. I know Guillen is in the lineup so I’ll leave him in but S Rod and Reimold are anyone’s guess. Brantley should be a go everyday with Branyan out.

Problem is I wont be around later to adjust…

  177. Grey

    Grey says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: Gotcha… I’d start Guillen and Reimold unless you need speed then Brantley over Guillen.

    @Nathan: Nice!

  178. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@BKK: Yes on Ibanez. Reports are his bat-speed is down this year and he’s not looking so good. He’ll do okay in that lineup but my gut is that his price is going down, down, down.

@kev: If you’re okay in OF, I could see making that deal. I am big believer in “Gonzo gets traded to BoSox, hits a bajillion homers” theory.

Which is sad b/c the guy in my league with Gonzo is the biggest Sox homer on earth. Gonzo is clamped on his teat but tight.

@mc serch: Who’s dropping Slowey? What’s going on here?

I agree w/ mc serch about Latos. Also, about the gas face.

@Grey: In your mind, is there a quantitative difference between a “Hehe,” a “Ha” and a “Ha!” Or do you just go as the spirit leads you?

  179. Nathan says:

@Grey: That last post was supposed to be read in the Futurama voice. When Professor Farnsworth says “Good news, everyone!” it’s usually something awful.

In this case, the Nats are indeed batting their starting SS in the 2-hole. It’s just that his name happens to be Guzman and not Desmond. Bleeeeeehhhh.

  180. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: Definitely.

Hehe is “I didn’t really laugh or smile, but I appreciate you trying to make me laugh or smile.” It’s encouragement.

Ha is “That made me smile.”

    Ha! is “That’s actually funny.”

That’s hilarious means “I went from laughing to actually being a little jealous I didn’t think of it.”

  181. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

Interested in anyone’s opinion on the following full season MLB wager’s:

    Chi Sox over 83.5 wins
    LAD over 85.5 wins
    MIL under 81.5 wins

  182. sean says:

@HalLeeDay34: If you’re in a shallow league, I’d give him three starts before I make a move. Fowler is a really useful player, even as a bench player, because you can slot him in on days off to raise your SB totals. While that’s usually a second half strategy for me, I don’t expect Hochevar to be anything more than a useable fantasy option at best. Remember when Kyle Davies

  183. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

everyone who hopped on the D-train, hop off quick!!!!

  184. Grey

    Grey says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: Whoever hopped on there deserves to be left off somewhere they didn’t intend.

  185. Tom Emanski says:

@Grey: Awesome, I’ve gotten a couple Has and Ha!s from Grey. He likes me, he really really likes me!

  186. sean says:

Can’t be too thrilled with Billingsley’s outing even though he only surrendered 1 ER. It’s the Pirates on a getaway day, and he walked 4 and gave up 5 hits in 5.1 innings. Seven strikeouts is a great effort, but the walks really undid Billingsley last year, limiting his win total.

These Dodgers pitchers are giving me agita

  187. Tom Emanski says:

RR Cool Jay got out of a jam nicely there.

  188. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@sean: totally agree. looks like more of the same (2nd half 09) might be on the way.

  189. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

Thoughts on CJ Wilson as an SP? Was completely off my pre-draft radar.

  190. BSA says:

I was sitting on the fence about him and his numbers are treating me fine today in Texas.

Granted Romero is throwing a nice game, early yet still a nice pitching matchup today.

  191. Tom Reale says:

@Grey: I absolutely warned against Kershaw…and I believe Rudy agreed
Burning Man is in N. Nevada bro…and it is like the most beautiful time bro…everyone’s all like so cool bro and everyone just like gets along and like feels the universe man it such a good vibe bro(said in a saracastic hippy voice, bro)

  192. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @Grey: Ha!

  193. cnote says:

I’m rotating Travis Snider and Dexter Fowler in as my 3rd OF in a deep league, but I’m tempted to drop one, or possibly both, of them to grab Josh Willingham or Milton Bradley.
    Any thoughts?

  194. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@cnote: I’d let Milton Bradley rot it hell. No read on Willingham thus far. I’d stand pat.

  195. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

This Borbon dude really needs to get off the schnide (sp?) for me.

  196. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

Regarding the whole hoarding closers discussion… I’ve seen some comments referring to “closer-short” owners declining trade offers, and yes that is the risk in my plan (load up on saves, then trade good closers for top-mid tier SPs), but this is the first week of the season. I’m talking about hoarding closers until the All-Star break, if necessary.

It’s one thing to scoff at closer offers when the difference between 10 points and 1 point is only 3 saves and there’s still 98% of the season to play… it’s another thing to scoff at those offers when almost half the season is gone and your 2 closers have earned you a total of 3 roto points, and all the SPs you’ve used instead of closers have you way over pace for the league’s starts limit. At that point, is a Wainwright for Marmol type offer still as scoffworthy? Perhaps to one or two owners, but there are going to be five owners with 5 points or less in saves. I like my odds of getting at least one of them to bite. And once one of them bites…

  197. Eddy says:

So looks like Bruce isn’t going to make strides in the average department this year, which means neither am I!

  198. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Mark Geoffriau: News: Dodgers right fielder Andre Ethier was held out of the Los Angeles lineup Thursday against Pittsburgh because of soreness in his left ankle. Ethier developed swelling and discomfort in the ankle after scrambling back to first base on a pickoff attempt by Ross Ohlendorf in the fifth inning of Pittsburgh’s 4-3 victory in 10 innings Wednesday night. Ethier remained in the game and went 1 for 3 with two walks. X-rays on Ethier’s ankle showed no significant problem, but he underwent treatment Thursday in Pittsburgh. Dodgers manager Joe Torre is uncertain whether he will play Friday night at Florida.

  199. ThePoonTycoon says:

anyone actually watching this jays-rangers matchup? just wondered if cj wilson is looking as good as his box score thus far? i picked him up in one of my leagues once i could stash bedard on the DL.

  200. sean says:

@<a href="#[email protected]RollieFingersMyAsh: As long as they didn’t put him on a plane ahead of the team (or avoided flying him at all), I don’t think it’s major cause for concern.

  201. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

Who would you carry on a Roto roster? (pick 2)

  202. sean says:

    CoCo with the sneaky win.

  203. spencer says:

    hiya grey

you saw my post before i assume, but whatever…

Robot and Zambrano for Grady Sizemore…do i sell high on robot? i think yes.. but i’m asking for your help!

    thanks dude

  204. sean says:

Looks like Garko is going to blahtoon with Davis, who sat today against the lefty… blech

  205. sean says:

@RollieFingersMyAsh: It’s Hafner and three speedsters. Not sure what your needs are, but I wouldn’t pick up Hafner with YOUR team.

  206. spencer says:

you think i can squeeze more outta him if he’s offering this?

    maybe adding pence…

this is a 16 team league mind you so this is huge

  207. Back to Minors says:

    @Nathan: yeh…not so!

  208. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Grey: 12 – current roster higlighted with Butler, Cano, Reyes, longoria, Hunter, Crawford, Cruz, Beltran, Konerko

  209. jesse says:

In a points league (rates don’t matter, counting stats do), do I sell on Crush Davis before other people notice there’s a blahtoon going down?

  210. jesse says:

    @RollieFingersMyAsh: I wouldn’t touch Hafner with a . . . thirty-nine-and-a-half-foot pooooooooooollle (cue How the Grinch Stole Xmas music).

  211. jesse says:

@Grey: Fair enough. How about Crush, Sizemore and McLouth for J-UP, Ad. LaRoche & Pence?

  212. jeffjam says:

That Borbon guy is really driving me crazy, another fly out. Geez.

  213. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Grey: scratch that – just saw CJ Wilson was available and cut ties with Hafner. Gardner remains on the wire (not worthy of my #1 waiver priority though).

  214. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@jesse: I take the J Upton side simply because he’s definitely the best player in the deal.

  215. Dingo says:

Garko: From being dropped by Seattle to batting 3rd for the Rangers. A bit of an odd trip there. Mike Sweeney’s batting cleanup for the Mariners against a lefty today, so we’ll see which supposed lefty-masher does better.

Seeing as how Brett Anderson is exactly the same as Ricky Romero, this comparison will be 100% scientifically valid.

  216. Tom Reale says:

@ThePoonTycoon: Wilson is looking good. So is Romero against the better lineup. Vlad loving TEX.

  217. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @Grey: Law of Diminishing Ha.

Just dropped Matt Crapps for CJ Wilson. Impulsive? Sure! But maybe Wilson is Johnny Bust-Out this year. Or maybe just Johnny Bust.

For the price of Matt Crapps*, I’ll pay to find out.

*Would have gone undrafted in my league if I hadn’t drafted him in final round. Not too many believers in Nat stopper Crapps this year.

  218. Tom Reale says:

    Moobs showing his doubles power.

  219. sean says:

Miguel Cabrera just got caught stealing for the second time in as many games. Anyone know what he’s trying to prove out there? Must be drunk again…

  220. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@sean: i would assume that was a faile hit and run with guillen

  221. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    Well, this is impressive:

    N. Feliz relieved C.J. Wilson
    – M. McCoy struck out swinging
    – J. Bautista struck out swinging
    – A. Lind struck out swinging

  222. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

    Feliz = stud

  223. Dingo says:

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Call me a coprophile if you want, but I drafted Matt Crapps in the 20th round of my league (out of 25). I guess I’m just a sucker for a big man with a sexy K/BB.

  224. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

    Borbon = dud.

  225. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Dingo: Crapps is definitely ownable. I’m just figuring no one else in my league will pick him up, since no one touched him on draft day.

A lot of guys in my league (12-team) go w/ 2 closers, which mystifies me. I have 5. Also: 4 saves already. Yes, I am in first in saves.

  226. sean says:

Feliz with a monster comeback after his .1 IP on opening day. He just struck out the side on 13 pitches in a big pressure situation.

  227. jeffjam says:

Borbon another suck out swinging, he is approaching the breaking point.

  228. jesse says:

@jeffjam: @RollieFingersMyAsh: Haha drop him if you want, but you’ll be upset in a month when he’s got a .370 OBP and 10 steals.

  229. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

    Wells again!!

  230. GopherDay says:

Vernon Wells is freakin killing me! I dropped him pre-season for Austin Jackson, now he is laughing at me for doing it! Gah!!

  231. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

Franky Francisco – welcome to the hot seat! Mr. Feliz is on your azz!

  232. penpen says:

    Frank-Frank fail-fail

  233. Lava says:

Wilson worth picking up after this performance? I’d have to drop Slowey, Oswalt, Daniel Bard, or Matt Thornton for him in a 12 team league. Unfortunately, it looks like he’s already owned in my 18 team league.

  234. RollieFingersMyAsh says:

@Lava: Drop Bard unless Holds is a cat

  235. Howard says:

I have a dilemma, I have to bring back Reyes this weekend and have to drop either Helton or Scutaro. Helton is a BA machine. Scutaro is in a great lineup but after Ellsbury, Pedroia and Youk there ain’t much. He’d also be an insurance policy for Reyes being Reyes. Any thoughts? Also have Blanks and Davis in the mix but I’d like to keep those whirleybirds.

  236. Grey

    Grey says:

@Howard: Lose the guy you’re not playing once Reyes comes back.

  237. jesse says:

Are we concerned about Carlos Pena at all? We’re not, right?

  238. Grey

    Grey says:

@jesse: I’m not concerned about veterans who don’t hit in two games.

  239. jesse says:

Also: Travis Snider can go get hit by a bus. Jesus.

  240. jesse says:

@Grey: Just call me stupid and get it over with.

  241. Lava says:

Do you believe Wilson is worth it over any of the guys I mentioned? I’m figuring he’s still a flier type, and I hesitate to drop Bard (as Rollie suggested) because the ratios help and every backup closer is owned in this league.

  242. Grey

    Grey says:

@Lava: I would’ve said the same thing as Rollie.

  243. Doug Ault says:

I know I’ve invited a year long headache, but I just traded Derreck Lee for Jose Reyes.I have Pena to plug in at 1st, and I wasn’t content with Assdribble as my ss

  244. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Baron Von Vulturewins: ha, baron, i know the feeling, i dropping snider for him in one league. already picked him up just to see what happened in another league after i drafted lilly and bedard late to stash on the DL.

  245. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Doug Ault: you got a steal

  246. Steve says:

@Howard: I’m a little late to the book club, but add me to the chorus of approval for Kavalier and Clay – I read it on Grey’s recommendation and it’s great.

@Grey: Finding it hard to believe how I can be killed in my Razzball league by Royals pitchers two straight days.

  247. Grey

    Grey says:

@Steve: You? I have Bannister and Belliard.

  248. Steve says:

@Grey: It’s always all about me Grey, you know that.

I have Hochevar and Bannister – and Romero, although he was benched. Alex Gonzalez is giving me some Razzagita too.

  249. sean says:

@Howard: Not sure how dropping Helton or Scutaro for Reyes is a dilemma. Sounds like Touchdown Jesus to me

  250. Lava says:

@Grey: Alright, thanks for the input! I’ll be patient and look forward to what you write about him in tomorrow morning’s roundup.

  251. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Grey: Hungry Man ate your Razz team.

@Steve: The Yiddish Policemen’s Union is great too, if you like alternate-history-Jewish-homeland-detective novels with made-up sland and Hassidic mobsters. Coen Bros are making the movie, which is ten kinds of exciting.

    Frasor, fts!

Also: Josh-Ham is hitting 8th? Ouch.

  252. Grey

    Grey says:

@Steve: I lost a Myers loss yesterday somehow. Still trying to figure that one out.

    @sean: Ha!

  253. Doug Ault says:

@ThePoonTycoon: A potential steal, yes.I just hope he doesn’t try to protect his leg by cutting down on steals.I’m also banking on Grey’s opinion that Lee won’t reproduce his 2009 numbers

  254. Steve says:

@Grey: Banister at least gave up a donk, which left me in ‘positive’ points territory.

@Ryan Perry owners: My apologies. I picked him up last night – that is why he gave up a run.

  255. Steve says:

    @Grey: Better SS/MI combo – Alcides + KJ or Tejada + Theriot?

  256. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @RollieFingersMyAsh: Ah, okay.

Also, earlier, meant “slang” not “sland.”

  257. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Doug Ault: i think lee and pena are fairly comparable. they do different things, but at the end of the day, their value will probably be within the same ballpark of each other. reyes could easily be the #2 SS this season and if he stays on the field, is almost assuredly going to be a top 5 SS.

  258. Lava says:

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Seconded the Yiddish … recommendation. Great book full of Jewish noir! I need to read Wonderboys, but I’m worried that seeing the movie first spoiled it for me. You can never really spoil Chabon’s writing, though, so probably not.

  259. ThePoonTycoon says:

i for one was scared shitless about being the position where i was keeping rollins, but i am thrilled to see him off to a solid start (even if it is just the nats).

i know the babip would never be that low again, but a man can be worried, even if he is being rational. i could have been irrational and traded him for $0.50 on the $1 or just not kept him all together.

  260. Eddy says:

I’m neck and neck in Ks, one back in Wins, and have a 4.64 ERA (my opponent has 5.26). I’m thinking of spot starting someone to put me ahead in at least Ks and give me hope of winning a game.

    Clayton Richard @Col
    Jason Vargas @Texas
    Colby Lewis vs Seattle
    Homer Bailey (@Cin) vs. Cubs

    Who do you take?

  261. Real Tom says:

Hey Grey, I have Iannetta and I hate the platoon situation. Do I go after Teagarden now that he sorta has a job?

  262. Eddy says:

And what’s up with the Nationals broadcasters being a nostalgic and showing a bunch of Jason Stammen’s (their SP) baby pics and childhood pics? Is this what they’ve stooped to now?

  263. How about that Frasor. SAGNOF.

  264. Phil B.

    phil says:

Grey, I just rec’d the following trade offer, wanted your advice:

    Me: Pujols and J. Reyes

    Hanley, CC, and Berkman

It’s a 12 team keeper(4 keeper picks), i have Billy Butler to play at 1B if I trade Pujols(and then Rasmus to be my Util). It’s standard yahoo set-up with OPS instead of AVG. My SP are Nolasco, Verlander, Jose DLR, Peavy Liriano.

  265. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: 1st SS combo special.

@Eddy: Bailey, none are pretty though.

    @Real Tom: Sure, try him.

@Eddy: Nats have the worst announcers.

  266. Grey

    Grey says:

    @phil: I’d want Pujols.

  267. Brian says:

Orioles lineup is posted with Reimold at DH, batting 7th.

  268. Grey

    Grey says:

@Brian: Thanks for the heads up!

  269. Eddy says:

They ARE the worst. And the Rangers’ analyst broadcaster has such a boring “kill me now I signed up for the Yankees” type of voice.

And do you think Miggy can outproduce his projections, at least his HRs and RBI?

He’s off to a great start, and people always over look that it’s the golden 27 year old season for him.

  270. WTH, H.G. Wells hit another HR.

  271. Grey

    Grey says:

@Eddy: I’m not changing preseason projections after 3 days.

  272. Grey

    Grey says:

@Eddy: But *can* he? Yup. Always had Miggy above most ‘perts in my rankings.

  273. infamy707 says:

Someone in my league jsut dropped Borbon, should I pick him up and drop Gardner or Headley?

  274. Doug Ault says:

@Elijah: He looked like the same old Wells striking out with men on 2nd and 3rd in the 6th.I picked him up yesterday off the wire just in case though

  275. ThePoonTycoon says:

why is everyone hatin’ on rob dibble?

    my favorite exchange last night:
“tomorrow come on down to the park for an afternoon game, just tell your boss you have a fever.”

“and if later he finds out it was baseball fever, well then technically you weren’t lying.”

  276. Tony says:

@Grey: ok i was reading and posting earlier and everyone seemed to be all giddy about Hochevar, why? OK it was a solid outting but 2 K’s? IDK….

  277. BKK says:

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Thanks for your input, I was feeling the same, that’s why he was on top (options shown in order of attractiveness to me). I sent the offer. We’ll see how bad he wants a closer.

  278. BKK says:

@Tony: Maybe you can get my opponent this week to pick him up! He seems to like his young talent. (That was not meant as a pun related to you.)

  279. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Tony: eh, i dropped snider for him a a league. i seriously doubt anyone is gonna be scooping up snider anytime soon, at least until i get to see hochevar pitch again and go from there.

now i wouldn’t go drop ervin santana or kershaw or anyone for hochevar yet (if ervin santana and kershaw are the most expendable guys on your team then you either play in a 6 team league or you play with a bunch of morons).

and for the record, i would drop a 6th/7th RP for hochevar too.

  280. Tony says:

@BKK: haha i know, ole swish loves em YOUNG! i just wish i drafted Heyward i could probably flip heyward and a closer for AROD or something similar LOL….. he’s got the “rookie goggles” on….

  281. Tony says:

@ThePoonTycoon: in my rcl no ones made a move on him either, shhhh, and i’m sitting on happ, gio gonzalez, dana eveland and strasburg! haha….. for personal reasons i must hold onto happ now, lol, ya grey thats bc of you!….. idk, i mean sure it was a good outting the other night, and he was a former #1 pick, but 2 K’s? IDK…

  282. Tony says:

wow i’m really hoping bruce is just facing 1) the cardinals and 2) cold weather in OHIO and he’s going to hit at some point…. i love the dude but if he does what he did to me last year again this year, i’m over him… haha

BTW its cold as balls in ohio, 87 last friday 45 with 50MPH winds today? WTF!

  283. ThePoonTycoon says:

@Tony: yeah, i’ve got gio on my watch list in 2 of my 3 leagues.

  284. mauledbypandas says:

ugh, I had the balls to start Wilson in my RP slot today, should have gotten the win, but then Frank blows the lead looking absolutely awful.

  285. BKK says:

@Tony: That’s a beautiful spring day in Winnipeg!

  286. Tony says:

@BKK: HAHA in ohio we call this a WTF day…. it snowed two fridays ago i had school off, then the next friday it was almost 90, then this friday its going to be like 45-50? What is going on!!!

  287. royce! says:

Apropos of zilch, I just remembered that when we were setting up our h2h league this year a few of the participants argued for switching from Yahoo to ESPN “because that’s where we all get our fantasy info anyway.”

    Oh yeah, h2h…

  288. I Am The Liquor says:

Better spec saves DL stash- Howell or Gervacio?

  289. Tony says:

@royce!: yep i love my H2H league but week to week and once the playoffs come, wow…. weird things happen, dumba$$es can work miracles….

  290. Grey

    Grey says:

@Tony: Yeah, need to see at least one more start.

  291. Tony says:

arroyo threw 8 strong today, consideration?

  292. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Tony: Hurt himself, hold tight.

  293. Steve says:

It’s second-half Ibanez so far. Hope the first-half guy decides to show up.

  294. Lava says:

@Steve: Seriously hope so. I got him for a bargain in my deep auction league, even though I wasn’t really considering him for any of my teams this year. He’s my second outfielder, though, so if he’s second-half Ibanez I’m in trouble.

  295. Dingo says:

@Grey: Is Gervacio also a better stash than Wuertz or Kuo?

  296. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    Crapps fts.

Dropped him today so I had mixed feelings about it. It was typical Crapps: Double, intl walk, no Ks.

  297. Grey

    Grey says:

@Baron Von Vulturewins: I was watching it, I don’t think even Crapps thought he was getting through that one.

  298. Steve says:

@Grey: What’s the happs on the Crapps?

Shake em up, shake em up, shake em up, shake em…

  299. AL KOHOLIC says:

    neiman out after 1.1 innings?

  300. Steve says:

  302. mc serch says:

@Grey: you are a complicated man

  303. Grey

    Grey says:

@mc serch: Not if I eat my fiber– Oh, complicated. Yeah.

  304. mc serch says:

@mc serch: referring to comment 187 and the “Hierarchies of Ha”

  305. mc serch says:

@Grey: i’m not even gonna ask where that fits in

  306. Steve says:

@Grey: How do you like an Alcides/Theriot combo?

    Too light on power?

  307. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Grey: @Grey: That’s the way it is with some Crapps. You just want to get through it.

Is Day 3 of baseball officially Every Offense Sucks Day? Some very uninspiring scores on the out-of-town scoreboard right now.

  308. Grey

    Grey says:

@Steve: I don’t mind it, you’ll miss ten homers and gain ten steals. Theriot is a little safer on lineup position right now.

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Yeah, pretty uninspiring pitchers going too.

  309. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Grey: Not enjoying the epic Nate Robertson-Jon Niese showdown?

  310. Steve says:

Chipper hurt himself drawing a walk?

  311. Steve says:

@Grey: Hurt his side apparently. Drew a walk, left the game.

  312. charlie batch says:

    evaluate this trade: wright/adam jones/alexei/ubaldo vs youky/ellsbury/andrus/baker

  313. sparts says:

after seeing that Napoli is not playing again today, I think I might need to get another catcher. Who do you like (Or dislike the least anyway)?

    Carlos Ruiz
    Rob Johnson
    John Baker

Or should i stay with Napoli for a while longer?

  314. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: Figures.

@charlie batch: I’d want the Wright side, but it’s too many players.

  315. Grey

    Grey says:

@sparts: Iannetta’s not bad, but he’s in the same boat.

  316. Steve says:

@Grey: RBI double for that cute girl Gaby Sanchez. She’s getting better looking all the time.

Could just be beer goggles of course..

  317. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: She’s a looker!

  318. BKK says:

@Grey: Any love for Russell yet? vs Iannetta, Napoli

  319. Tom Emanski says:

@Mark Geoffriau: Yea, those do sting a little.

Grey, out of K-Rod, Nunez, Dotel, and Capps, who is the first to lose their job? Do the last 3 get to at least 25 saves? I’m looking to trade the worst one or if 3 can get to 25, I’ll trade K-Rod.

  320. BeanyBill says:

    Pts league (HR=4, 3B=3, etc.; RBI, R, SB=2; BB/HP=1) –

Which three would you want going forward: T. Snider, N. Morgan, N. Reimold, J. Borbon, C. Kotchman, N. McLouth, M. LaPorta?

  321. royce! says:

Well, looks like Wood’s ridin’ the pine. Perhaps it’s time for me to get the gift of Gab(y). What? Too lame a pun? Well Gabby Gabby we accept you, we accept you one of us!

  322. mc serch says:

@Steve: glass chipper hurt his side sliding into second on a force out…day to day…dude is frageeli

  323. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Tom Emanski: Hard to guess who will get to 25 saves — they all will if they keep their jobs. As far as losing jobs — it’s whoever sucks more, first.

I think Nunez has the shortest leash b/c he’s had the job the shortest and he’s not branded as a “closer” like Motel Dotel and Crapps. Also, Pittsblurgh* and the Nats don’t have much to play for, so they have less reason to give someone the yank. Then again, Crapps, after several serviceable years in Pitt, has stunk during the recent cycle of last year-this spring-today.

If you can trade Crapps, start with him. He got a save today.

There’s also the question, though, of what you can get back. K-Rod will fetch way more than the others. Also: depth of league. Are you confident you can nab new closers off the wire? If the answers are “shallow” and “yes,” trade K-Rod. If they’re “knee-deep” and “what is ‘the wire’?” hold on K-Rod and see what Crapps will fetch.

You can read all about these strategies and more in my new book “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.”

    *Mad magazine represent!

  324. mc serch says:

@Tom Emanski: oh snap! I own three of those four (the three crappiest, natch)

  325. Steve says:

@mc serch: Thanks. Was only following along on the web so may have done him a (slight) disservice.

  326. Bob says:

    @Grey: Me quoting you.

“Carlos Gomez does not belong in the two hole, even if it seems appropriate because of what comes out of the two hole. ”

You “do it” so many times a day, I just couldn’t let this one “pass” without acknowledging “it.” This was a mini-classic.

You make me laugh countless times, even with juvenile humor, while giving great advice. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am staying the course with Alcides.

  327. Tom Emanski says:

Thanks, Baron. It’s an 18 team league and there’s nothing left saves-wise on the waivers. There are some team that definitely need saves so I think I’ll wait a bit and make them beg in a few weeks.

  328. Dingo says:

The box score for Masterson makes him look like an ace — 41/59 strikes, 4K to 0BBs, and 6/2 GB/FB ratio. Anybody checking out what he looks like in real life?

  329. Tom Emanski says:

@mc serch: Yea Dotel and Capps were available way late and I couldn’t pass them up.

By the way, nice choice of user name–the guy who produced Illmatic!

  330. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Tom Emanski: In an 18 team league, you’re smart to stock up on saves. I’d say hold these guys like penny stocks, and hope the price goes up.

  331. B.J. says:

Hey Grey, I’ve got Alfonso Soriano as my 4th OF but the guy looks lost this year and has two knees that are about to disintegrate into dust. Should i dump him for any of the following: Rasmus, Bedard (DL stash, if healthy could be WW gold), Chris Young (looked solid the other night and like Bedard if healthy could be gold). I have a solid roster but feel like Soriano is clogging a spot with his sucktitude

    my roster
C- Martin 1B- AGonz 2B- Phillips 3B- Zimm SS- Reyes
OF- Braun, Hamilton, CarGo UTIL- Votto
bench- A. escobar (will be dropping tomorrow to free up Reyes’ spot), Soriano

    SP- Greinke, Johan
    RP- KRod, Valverde
    P-Aardsma, Billingsley, Oswalt
    Bench- Slowey, Liriano, Hughes, Niemann

so I can do one of two things, I drop Escobar and Pick up Bedard to put in one of my DL spots then and drop Soriano or someone else for a name I mentioned. Or two, don’t do anything at all. Or option 3, Grey’s choice.

  332. sean says:

marmol was filthy in teaching heyward a lesson

  333. struggler says:

@Dingo: He’s looking really good! Fatsball is touching 94. He just worked out of a bases loaded jam with Konerko at bat. The only run he gave up was a fastball right down the middle to Quentin that was miscalled for ball 4. I like his 3/5 slinging delivery. Seems extra tough on righties. Glad I drafted him on all my teams this year.

  334. BKK says:

@Grey: I hate catchers. I don’t understand these guys that like 2 catcher leagues. Its hard enough to find one that’s serviceable.

  335. Bill Lumbergh says:

Better 2B option: Weeks, K. Johnson, or S-Rod? (Keeper league)

  336. Grey

    Grey says:

@B.J.: Drop Escobar for Bedard, DL him then grab Young.

@sean: He’s just nasty, I don’t know why I’m the only one that seems to like him.

    @Bill Lumbergh: Weeks

  337. James says:

    Hey Grey,

What do you think about David Price vs the Yankees tomorrow night? Should I start him or should I not?

  338. b_m says:

hmmm, start Price vs NY tomorrow?

And who do you like out of this bunch? -> Wolf, Cueto, E. Santana, CJ Wilson?

  339. sean says:

@Grey: i gladly drafted him as my top closer in the 12th round on just about all of my teams

  340. Bill Lumbergh says:

@Grey: Thanks Grey! You ‘da man! Follow up – Blanks or Headley for 4th outfielder? (same league)

  341. sean says:

@Bill Lumbergh: Mmmyeah, how about, ummm, a hitter not calling Petco home, yeahhh?

  342. Bill Lumbergh says:

    @sean: Ha! I love it!

  343. Tom Emanski says:

    Put it on the boarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd…YES

  344. mc serch says:

@Tom Emanski: thanks! speaking of crappy closers, gonzalez trying to blow one now

  345. Griff says:

Man, Grey. Thanks for pushing C. Quentin this year. He’s looking like a strong bounceback candidate and I’d pretty much written him off. What flavor daquiri is your favorite?

  346. Tom Emanski says:

Hahaha, Chipper has a sore “right side”

  347. Grey

    Grey says:

@sean: Yeah, but every time I do that Closer Report someone always says to me, Marmol’s way too high. Maybe cause I’ve seen him pitch and they haven’t, not sure. But he’s a 100 K closer which is pretty rare.

@Bill Lumbergh: Headley for a little of everything, Blanks for straight power.

    @GopherDay: Yeah, seriously.

  348. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

@Grey: Marmol will be monstrous this year. He was my number-one target to be my number one closer.

    Marmol, Frasor, Crapps — a Three-Save Night.

I’ll buy that for a dollar.

  349. Tele says:

Hey Grey. My trigger finger is a bit itchy when it comes to my Cubbies: Considering dropping Soto for Kurt Suzuki, but I’m torn. Frasor is also available and Z’s last start is still fresh in my mind; too early?

  350. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

Wha…? My “can’t miss” infield of Pujols, Phillips, Hanley and Wright went a combined 0 for 13, with 0/0/0/0 today. I’d be pissed if I wasn’t so dumbfounded.

  351. mauledbypandas says:

i want to murder Slowey right about now. I think he declared a jihad on my WHIP

  352. Eddie says:

    Hey Grey,
I’m in a 16 team H2H keeper, walk counts the same as a single.. My bench is thin and I don’t have a strong hitter to plug in at the utility slot right now. Should I use the #2 waiver priority on Nick Johnson? He just got dropped. Still qualifies at 1B too, which is a bonus.

  353. struggler says:

Anyone watch Ervin’s start yesterday? He seemed to pitch well aside from the 2 homers. Is he really droppable?

I need to make room for Reyes. It’s either him, Co-Jack, Snider, Desmond, or Sean-Rod?

  354. Grey

    Grey says:

@struggler: re: Ervin — Just moving towards the exit row, not ejecting yet. Preparing is all.

    I’d lose Sean-Rod.

  355. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

Anyone up for some deep thinking (is Jack Handey a commenter)? H2H league, pitching for today is in the books. I’m ahead in W 2-1, S 6 – 2, ERA 2.630 – 6.331, WHIP 1.412 – 1.655… I’m losing K 34 – 42 (me 39.2 IP, him 48.1 IP). His only closer is Aardsma, so he can’t catch up in saves. Remaining starts for the matchup:

    Price vs. NYY
    Greinke vs. Bos
    Johnson vs. LAD

    Sheets @LAA
    Beckett @KC
    Burnett @TB

Roll the dice and start everyone, despite the matchups being in his favor (might win all 5 pitching cats… might lose 4/5)? Bench everyone (will lose Ks and probably Ws, will win S, ERA and probably WHIP)? Bench Price but leave in Greinke/Johnson and some RPs of Marmol/Wilson/Dotel/Frank2/Frasor/Nunez (possibly some more vulture wins)? Some combination of all that mess (even I don’t know what I’m asking anymore)?

  356. BKK says:

Frank2 and Ibanez messed up my trade for Cruz today with their Razztastic outings. He liked the deal this morning and would let me know tonight. Raul goes 0-4 and Frankie pitches 2/3 of and inning with an ERA of 40.5. NICE. Thanks for helping a guy out!

  357. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

Blargh… why does Beckham need to bunt Pierre over to 2nd? Last I checked, Pierre has the ability to swipe a bag here and there.

  358. sean says:

@Awesomus Maximus: sitting aces is always a bad decision. you’ll end up double crossing yourself.

  359. sean says:

Span’s 1-for-15 start is not helping my already low BA.

  360. matthole says:

Ian Kinsler was given a cortisone shot in his sprained right ankle Thursday, which could delay his return a few days.

@Grey: masterson looked good tonight, spot starter only tho? better dl stash gordon or branyan? thx

  361. Joe says:

Grey, how many more at bats are you giving Josh Hamilton to produce before you drop him? I know it’s Thursday of week 1, but I’ve got him on 2 teams and an eye on some free agents, namely Matt Harrison, JJ Hardy in one league , Konerko, Gio Gonzalez in the other.

  362. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

@sean: Yeah, that’s my thinking. I’ve always been a “dance with who brung ya” kinda’ guy (or “who ya brung”, in this instance). I’m inclined to just play everyone and let the chips fall where they may. I’d much rather spot start Gio tomorrow over Price, but there’s no chance Price clears waivers and I get him back.

  363. sean says:

Yanks’ lineup is much less intimidating against a lefty, especially one with Price’s stuff. I don’t really see him getting shelled, but I do see him exhausting his pitch limit early by issuing walks…

  364. Dingo says:

@struggler: Thanks for the visual confirmation! Convinced me to drop Franklin Morales for him. I’ve still got four other closers, and I’m hoping to catch C.J. Wilson in a bottle!

  365. Nathan says:

I must say, Chris Perez looks pretty good out there for the Indians. Is there really any chance that they give the job back to Kerry Freaking Wood when he is finally back?

  366. GopherDay says:

@Nathan: Crazier things have happened! But if he keeps this up, there’s no way Wood gets the gig.

Unless the Indians give it to him because it’ll increase his trade value…

  367. Eddy says:

Really wish they would have stretched Slowey at least until the end of the 6th inning to get the QS in my main league. Oh well, at least he pitched well. Trading away Jenks for him couldn’t be any sweeter!

  368. Eddy says:

Sorry I just wanted to be the 400th comment :)

But what are your thoughts on Bruce so far Grey? Worse than usual or we should expect this?

  369. Terrence Mann says:

Grey won’t give up on Hamilton until it’s confirmed he’s living with Whitney Houston.

  370. penpen says:

Anyone else got blueball’d by Niemann tonight? I’d rather been roofie-d so I could move on to my next one-start stand.

  371. Nathan says:

@Eddy: And hey, he’s in line to get the win, so there’s that.

  372. GopherDay says:

My team went 2-25 with 2 runs scored…can anyone say ouch???
