Try not to do ledes about the same player, especially not in quick succession, but Gavin Williams is working with fire right now and there were five games yesterday.
MLB doing their schedule: Rob Manfred, “Let’s put a game here, and here…”
“Hey, Rob, like, I dig how you’re doing the schedule, ya know. Like putting 34 games on Wednesday and five games on Thursday, but when you say, ‘Let’s put a game here and here…’ You’re pinning games to a chicken, and why are you doing this blindfolded and why are there chickens in your office?”
Gavin’s dope though, so let’s run it back! Yesterday, he went 7 IP, 0 ER, 2 hits, zero walks, 11 Ks, lowering his ERA to 3.78. His underlying numbers are some of the prettiest in baseball too. It’s why I put him in my Buy column at the break. I’ll be buy for Gavin–Wait, that’s not what I’m saying. Hold your wieners here! His 11.1 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 2.98 xFIP and a 45.6% GB rate pops, daddy. No foolsies, those are better than Paul Skenes, Chris Sale and Chase Burns. Combined! No, not combined. I don’t even know what that means. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Patrick Bailey – 1-for-4 and his 2nd homer this week, which I knew without looking it up. Not because I’m related to him. Not because I have all his rookie cards and I plan to retire on them–well, I do, but that’s not the reason. I know because I actually roster this schmohawk in one league, and I benched him this week. Sonavabench!
Taj Bradley – 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.69. Ya know how I was flouting Gavin’s numbers? Well, I wasn’t! Flouting doesn’t mean that! (Just did a Google.) I was talking about Gavin’s stats being some of the best in baseball and Taj’s are. Dot dot dot. Not that bad! Not as good as Gavin’s, but 10.1 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 plays.
Ty France – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 16th homer, hitting, well, let’s keep that a secret for a second. So, I picked up France yesterday for a batty call — who am I, Napoleon? — and he homered, so if I picked up France on Opening Day, I would’ve got something like 162 homers from France this year. Don’t do the math yourself, you make a weird face when doing math and it makes you look ugly. So, Part II: Another So, Huh?: In this afternoon’s Buy column, I make an offhanded comment about Vlad Jr. and how France is out-homering him. Yeah, but he can’t touch Vlad Jr. when it comes to average, right? France is hitting .275! That’s almost twenty points higher than Vlad Jr.!
Griffin Canning – 2 2/3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 6.97. “That could be me!” That’s Chris Paddack punching the air.
Chris Sale – 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 11 Ks, ERA at 2.19. I can’t tell if Sale is overrated, underrated, or just rated. I think it’s the last option, but not if you list them A, B, C, because, well, you know.
Ozzie Albies – 2-for-4, and his 16th homer, and 2nd homer in four games. Good things happen when Ozzie keeps the head on that bat.
Dominic Smith – 1-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 7th homer. Dom Smith would have zero to one homer this year on another team. Just something about the Braves that brings out the good stuff. Well, except in Austin Riley (1-for-4), who went back to being miserable.
Michael Harris II – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 19th homer. For some reason, Megahertz reminded me of Kurtz, and I sighed so loudly saying, “MegaKurtz,” that Cougs was like, “You’re mumbling nonsense again.” I know, darling!
Drake Baldwin – 1-for-4 and his 19th homer. As our man VinWins said in yesterday’s comments, Drake Baldwin jumped 44 spots in the last week on the Player Rater (and now likely more with the home run), and Baldwin is back in the top 20 overall. An insane year for catchers. Two catchers are in the top five overall, and Dillon Dingler is almost in the top 10 overall for all players! Like everyone saw a catcher hit 60 homers last year and was like, “You like that? Why didn’t you say anything? I can do that!”
Tyler Locklear – 2-for-2, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. He was a triple short of the cycle. Otherwise known as a Biscuit Pants Cycle.
Brandon Pfaadt – 6 IP, 2 ER, 9 baserunners, 1 K, ERA at 4.43. He has a 2.49 ERA in July. Wait, it gets better! [sees he has 12 Ks in 21 2/3 IP in that time] Okay, no, it doesn’t get better. I could see trying him, but hideousness seems around the corner.
Michael McGreevy – 6 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 10 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.07. One final note on Pfaadt: “Hideousness seems around the corner?” Yeah, that’s been McGreevy the whole season and he still has a 3.07 ERA, which would be leading all my leagues.
Troy Melton – 5 IP, 2 ER, 9 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 1.95. It’s funny how some pitchers come up, don’t pitch that well, but have these great ERAs. Melton, for one. It never hurts any pitcher to not walk guys. Melton’s 2.9 BB/9 isn’t elite, but his 8.3 K/9 makes it work, just enough. See, funny!
James Outman – 1-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 4th homer. The Great Knoche told people to pick up Outman yesterday for today’s game. Well played, my man! Yes, it was for steals, but you’re turning your nose up at homers now? Shame on you. (He did try to steal, too, but was caught.)
Isaac Collins – 1-for-3, 2 RBIs and his 6th homer. Dropped The Bartender in one of my deeper leagues last week, and this past Sunday someone else picked him up and I chortled, “You fool! He sucks!” But the fool, who sucks, was I.
Randy Dobnak – 5 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 1.42. Even more impressively, he drove the entire team to the stadium in his Ford Escape.
Ian Seymour – 6 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 4.64 as he followed Casey Legumey. A solid Yarbro appearance, and his underlying numbers are monocle-worthy, but also [giant red flag] He was facing the Blew Jays.
Shane Bieber – 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 hits, zero walks, 3 Ks, ERA at 4.70. It’s time we did a check-in on Bieber! …okay, so I googled Bieber and watched six hours of music videos. What do these have to do with Shane Bieber? Bieber’s underlying numbers are hideous, and it’s nice that he’s strung together a couple good starts. Better than being strung out, but he’s iffy at best. Maybe Streamonator, if desperate.
James Triantos – Was called up by the Cubs. How cool is this:
Hearing the Cubs are calling up James Triantos to make his MLB debut.

That’s Ralph, our old prospect writer, out there breaking news. Mean’s while, our current prospect writer Itch wants to break knees (mine). Itch also said this for James Triantos, “It’s easy to like the contact-rich Triantos, who struck out just 9.7 percent of the time in 89 Double-A games while slashing .300/.345/.437 with seven home runs and 38 stolen bases. It’s not as easy to see how he’ll mix in with this club. A second-round pick in 2021, Triantos is a right-handed hitter at 5’11” 195 lbs who can play second or third but isn’t great at either spot. Though it looks today like he’s blocked about seven different ways, thing can change in a hurry whenever the team starts sorting. I’d like to sort my knuckles on Grey’s face.” Dude, c’mon! That Itch quote was from 2025, as Triantos sorta languished with seemingly no way out, due to more blockage than your arteries after eating a Godmother sub. He still has massive playing time concerns. He’s 23 now (he’s an ancestry website?) and he went 7/18/.306 with a 11.6 K% in Triple-A. He’s the kind guy that doesn’t blow you away for fantasy, but he should be a major leaguer. At worst, he’s bad Bo Bichette. At best, he’s good Bo Bichette. Is there a moderate Bichette? Mo Bichette?
THERE’S A NEW POST FOR FOLLOWUPS FOR ME
Hi, was offered Gavin Williams and Turang for Judge. Trying to win now and Judge is not helping.
I don’t know anything about your league but it’s fine if it’s for this year. There’s a new post for follow up for me.
I got offered Yordan/Nick Martinez/ McGreevy for Jordan Walker and Kurtz. 10 team dynasty and I’ve got Walker and Kurtz for cheap.
I already turned it down, but curious if you would’ve said yeah.
Walker/Kurtz side, it’s not close
How scared would you be to start Joe Ryan or Imai in the playoffs?
H2H, OPS, K/9 league
I’d be scared of Imai…Ryan is fine if healthy
Grey,
can you please rank these OF’s ros for pts league?
Greene, Harris, Pages, Reynolds, JRod
JRod, Harris, Riley
12 team redraft h/h points
Who would’ve thought rostering Acuna/Tucker/ 15 HR R Greene I would be 12-3 ? Not Me
Haha, I know
12 team redraft h/h points … who you dropping Lambert or Jax
Lambert
Hey Grey, trying to shore up my 2B in a 12TM PTS league with no K penalty for hitters. Should I just roll with Altuve at 2B or try and trade:
Dingler and Devers for Tatis and Soderstrom? Dingler and Devers are occupying my UTIL spots so I’d have to fill them with Jeremy Pena and Soderstrom if the deal goes through.
I’d take Tatis/Soder
Need one.
Roupp v Mil @ SD
Montero v Balt @ Athletics
Sproat @ SF @ LAA
Detmers v Hou
Soriano v Milw
Roupp
Gavin Williams for Cruz fair? Would you take Williams in this deal?
Yes, fair
In my NL keeper, who’s the drop between Sheets and Noelvi to activate Acuna?
Marte
Thanks. It kinda kills me that I paid a lot to acquire him in the preason and now he’s just a dump.
I know, it sucks
NL 10 team keeper league.
I am increasingly getting disappointed with Bogaerts and have been holding onto him as he is an accumulator with a $20 salary so some level of commitment. I am contending and can use help in the SB department. I am thinking of waiving Boegarts in favor of Jim Jarvis. Thoughts?
Meh, sure
Kwan or Ewing?
Ewing
Need an SP for ROS.
(1) Young (Balt); Christian Scott; Montero; Reynaldo Lopez
(2) Should Scott be de-valued due to possible reduced workload?
1. Scott
2. Sure
Next two choices (due to Scott’s innings risk) — Montero; Young; Lopez.
Thanks.
Lopez, Keider…none of these guys are ROS options
Next choice (due to Scott’s inning risk). Thanks.
Lopez
HEylo to the heyLo, Grey!!!
Should I call off any of these starts I plan on making?
Drohan v. COL (43.6)
Rogers v. ATL (5.6)
Boyd @ PIT (-3.2)
lurrrrrrrr!
I’m fine with them — lurves!
thank you, my OTIF! luuuuuuuuuuuuuuurveya!
Haha, No problem
The bot likes Rogers v. ATL, nice!
Appreciate the work and advice. Looking at the bottom of my roster and trying to see where I should churn now that the Rockies are on a road trip…
7×7 keeper league with OPS and Batter Ks as extra cats w/ daily lineup so trying to use the platoon advantages.
Mead, Moniak, Eldridge, Rumfield, Bleday, Carrigg. Is this the right order? Would you drop any for Happ, Paredes, Steer, HHernandez? Looking for HRs & RBIs
Rumfield for Paredes
Morning & Happy International Self-Care Day!
Hey this is a family show! …Well, playing this fake baseball game is sorta like my self-care, but I need your help.
Good news = players finally activated from IL.
Bad news = I now have more bench bats (3) than I typically like to carry (1-2).
Full roster below (6×6 – OPS/QS league). Would you cut 1 (or 2) of these bench bats to add pitching?
the “good problem to have” is that most these guys are doing pretty good…
C: Raleigh
1B: Soderstrom
2B: Luis Garcia
3B: JRam
SS: CJ Abrams
IF: Dansby Swanson
OF: Carroll, Buxton, Adell,
UTL: Austin Riley, C. Durbin
BN: Springer, Vinnie P, Arraez
Thanks in advance
Hahaha — Cut Vinnie already, next Springer
Thank you.
I feel my self-care already improving
Haha
Cut Kerry Carpenter to pick up Kyle Karros? Util spot. OBP/SLG league.
Sure
Need some help Grey…
Bobby Witt going down leaves me with only Xavier Edwards for SS. And he has been awful since the break.
Joey Ortiz
Bryson Scott
Nasim Nunez
10 team 7 hitting category yahoo league
Or do you have someone you would recommend who maybe on the wire?
Thanks as always for your input!
Are you saying you’re going to drop Xavier for one of these schmohawks? If so, meh…Otherwise, Ortiz
Sorry, I was clear as mud! lol
Not dropping Xavier, even though he stinks right now. Need a backup, so thank you for input! Ortiz it is!
Yeah, Ortiz
I could use some speed – who would you choose between Nunes and Simpson?
7×7 league. These guys dont hit HR so thats whatever. I need the stolen bases and anything else they bring to the table.
Would need to drop one of these dudes – N. Gonzales (Pitt), Josh Jung, or Clemens.
can you also rank those 3 guys (ROS)? Thanks!
Nasim
Gonzales, Kody
Grey, which 3 are you starting, H2H points league?
Braxton Ashcraft • PIT vs CHC
Jesus Luzardo • PHI vs NYY
Michael Wacha • KC @DET
Matthew Boyd • CHC @PIT
Hunter Brown • HOU @CHW
Framber Valdez • DET vs KC
Thank You!
Luzardo, Boyd, Brown
Kyle Tucker has 2 fantasy points in my league this week. I sat him, unfortunately for Jake Bauers who has 1.8 pts. Im killing it this week besides that one spot, but more on Tucker. In a keeper league his name still has to hold some value. Im gonna see if I can catch a team out of it, napping, and ask for Jeremy Pena. I know thats a ridiculous trade in real life, for this year, but unless Tucker is legit done as an all star level player at 29, I think I can sell him as just a rough first year in a new city with a huge contract. Which might be part of it. That big long slow dopey swing is the other part. Hard to believe whats happened to him. My only regret is he’s not doing this on the Mets. Those fans and local media could have caused him to consider faking a fall in Bloomingdales. Better Call Saul stuff. He’d be getting destroyed here. In LA they just sit him for Alex Call now and then, and hit him 7th. Does he hear boo’s?
I don’t think so
‘Mornin’, Grey! Are we trusting Jared Jones against the Cubs? How about Roki Sasaki against the Mets? I’m leaning yes Jonesey, no Roki. Do tell…
Thanks!
I don’t know where either of these starts are
Sorry, Jones is at home and Roki gets to pitch in Citi Field.
Jones seems fine, I guess on Roki, but don’t trust him
Much appreciated.
No problem
need to try to strengthen my SP from DL – Connelly Early or Tyler Glasnow for a DL stash ROS?
Glasnow
Oh great Grey,
can you please rank these starts for a H2H points league?
deGrom @Hou
Greene PIT
Luzardo @Mia
Williams @Cin
Greene, Luzardo, Gavin
Grey,
I can only start TWO of these in a pts league next week:
Bradish @Det; PHI
Cavalli TOR; @Atl
Jax TX; CHW
King COL; SF
King, Bradish
Catcher scab is getting flakey… I’ve been set/forget mode with Herrera. But he’s been cold and someone just dropped the Dumper. Drop Herrera for Raleigh or nah?
Sounds fine to try
I’ve been tagged!
Baldwin moved up another 4 spots to #14 on the Player Rater. Dingler is in the top 10 now. Five catchers in the top 16. Also, Wood went 0 for 4 and dropped back below Misiorowski.
I traded Cade Smith to Oaktown for Baldwin yesterday. Got tired of hearing Oak go on and on about the 2 catchers he was using. Hopefully Drake takes a couple days off now so he doesn’t get injured before joining my team. I acquired Cade from Steve earlier in the year, and the whole time I had him Smith kept talking about how much better a manager Steve was. I figure they deserve each other.
Cade did mention that you were a better commenter
Haha!
Hahaha
Ugh, I’m starting to get bad feelings on Wood… sounds like a solid trade that helps both
Please rank: Grant Holmes; Montero; Reynaldo Lopez; Singer
Lopez, Keider
No additions to the 100 Best Fantasy Starts list for the 4th day in a row, but Gavin would have been top 20 if he had secured the win.
Makes sense! Thanks, Vin!
Ladies! My Mercedes.
Hold 4 in the back, two if they Pfaadt.
That’s Randy Dobnak rolling through KC Power Light district looking for some high tipping fares,
Jake Gonzalez or CEStrand? Unless Kurtz is back today, is Kurtz back today?
Kurtz maybe back today, definitely this weekend unless a setback, watched a Kotsay interview from Monday
Thanks ellis! Please no setbacks!
Ha yup
Nice!
Jacob Gonzalez — I don’t know on Kurtz
My Liege –
Might it be fair to call Bieber Matthew Boyd Lite? He’s been dotting and pitching deep into games over the last three starts, and the quality of contact stats have really come around.
Several tough matchups near term, but a gravy last six weeks filled with Royals, Mariners and Orioles. That’s If he doesn’t get traded to a contender.
Your Faithful Subject
Interesting, maybe his schedule could help him — assuming he’s not traded
Thanks, Grey. Always thanks!
No problem
Hopefully not a dupe post.
On trade deadline this weekend so would like to provide better context for three trade ideas.
This is a 12 team, H2H league. After this week, I will likely drop back to fifth place. Basically, 8teams vying for six playoff spots with last six teams within 7 games. There are 19 categories per week so lots of ups and downs. Hitting: r, s, d, t, hr, rbi, sb, bb, ks, ave. Pitching: hr allowed, w, L, ks, whip, era, QS, saves, holds. Team:
Jeffers
Harper, Machado, Mead (play 3)
B. Lowe, Trea, Otto (play 3)
Soto, J Walker, Bux, Merrill, Bleday (play 5)
DH Schwarber
Skubal, Wheeler, Cease, J Ryan, Eovaldi, Leahy, Drohan
T Megill, Bednar, B Baker, L Varland
IL Meyer
1. Offered: his Vlad for my Cease. With Mead racking not sure this is a big upgrade?? Until this week, pitching has been good.
2. Offered: His Miz and Gleyber for my Trea, T Megill and L Varland. I know you said Miz but wanted you to have my team.
3. Not offered but an idea I have: his McGonigle and Gilbert for my Otto Lopez and Eovaldi.
What do you think of each given my squad?
Any faves?
1. Hold 2. It’s fair, your team looks stacked already, are you winning this league? 3. Sounds fine
Horrible start due to Crochet, Eovaldi. Have come from tenth place to third. Several trades and good pickups have me moving up. So maybe I just hold and ride the rail
Yeah, might be better off
