Please, blog, may I have some more?Baltimore waved the white flag on the current generation of guys and traded C Adley Rutschman to their division rival in Boston. The Orioles got a package that looks good on paper but might wind up a little thin given the defensive value of Rutschman and the volatility of pitching prospects. I like RHP Anthony Eyanson as much as the next guy, but if I’m trading the best defensive catcher in baseball who can also hit, I want young hitters in return. More specifically, I want young hitters with speed who can play defense. OF Enndy Azocar fits that bill, and RHP Kyson Witherspoon was the 15th overall pick just last year, but I still think I’d have held Rutschman if I were the POBO. Or gotten two hitters and an arm. Or three hitters and a reliever.

Please, blog, may I have some more?Earlier this week one of the top young prospects was recalled by the New York Yankees to take over the shortstop position. That young up-and-coming dynasty player is George Lombard Jr.
Lombard entered the 2026 season as the 46th best prospect by Baseball America while MLB ranked him at 32nd and Baseball Prospectus pegged him as the 42nd best prospect. Not bad for a 21-year-old who was drafted with the 26th overall pick in 2023.
Barely three years later Lombard finds himself in the majors. The rapid rise from high school to the majors shouldn’t be a huge surprise as his father played saw time in the majors from 1998-2006.

Seattle has no shortage of options in reshaping their rotation this week. I suspect they’re hoping to send two starters at once to maximize return, offloading Luis Castillo and opening a path for Anderson. Trade winds seem to be blowing toward Chicago. I never like predicting what a team might like in another organization, but the Cubs have pieces of just about every variety and would probably love to move Kevin Alcantara, Matt Shaw and maybe even Moises Ballesteros. If Kade Anderson isn’t promoted within the few weeks, there ought to be an investigation.

1. Yankees SS George Lombard Jr. (21, AAA)
Jose Caballero has been cromulent as a short-term option at the six replacing Anthony Volpe, but Fangraphs lists him as a WAR negative on both offense and defense. His best position on a first-division roster is as a utility player. You could say the same about Ryan McMahon and his .278 on base percentage, although I might argue you could find a more versatile bench player with that roster spot. Lombard Jr. has adapted to Triple-A after a slow start at the level, slashing .308/.429/.617 with seven home runs, five stolen bases and a 23.3 percent strikeout rate over his last 30 games.

The top group feels much stronger than usual for this time of year, between the exodus of rookies and the incoming draft class. Hernandez is the exciting teenage righty since Jose Fernandez, one of my all-time favorite players. May he rest in peace.
