The Orioles did their thing week, demoting SS Jackson Holliday and 3B Coby Mayo despite both belonging to what might be Baltimore’s best opening day lineup. I got a kick out of a recent article claiming the Orioles didn’t get where they are by tanking. I like the project, as a position-statement-type writing assignment. Tough side to support. I mean sure they Rule 5 drafted Anthony Santander and played him every day until he was functional. Sure they landed Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson and Kyle Bradish via strategic quitting. They also did other stuff, but that doesn’t change the fact that they lost as badly as possible for several years to get to where they are now. They did smart stuff, for sure, but I don’t know why it’s bad to call this reality by its name.

When the Los Angeles Angels drafted shortstop Zach Neto in 2022 with the 13th overall pick, some people may have thought it was a nice story of a kid being drafted out of Campbell University – a school that is not exactly known for sending players to the majors.

But Neto is not just a nice story – and no team would waste a first-round pick on a nice story. Neto was a star for the Camels, finishing his three-year career with a .403/.500/.751 slash line with 27 homers, 108 RBI and 31 steals in 100 games and 475 plate appearances and helping lead the team to the NCAA tournament in 2021 and 2022.

Little did people know, however, that within a year of being drafted, Neto would be playing shortstop for the Angels.

The Fast Track

After being drafted and signing with the Angels, Neto was assigned to High-A Tri-City, where he played in a total of seven games before moving up to Double-A Rocket City, where he slashed .320/.382/.492 with four home runs, 23 RBI and four steals. Neto started the 2023 season at Rocket City but was there for only seven games as he slashed .444/.559/.815 with three home runs and 10 RBI.

Neto didn’t even have time to find a place to sleep while at Triple-A Salt Lake City as his stint there lasted only four games before he was recalled to the majors by the Angels.  Less than a year after the draft, he was starting for the Angels after entering the season ranked as the 53rd best prospect by Baseball America, 89 by MLB.com and 47th by Baseball Prospectus

Happy Spring! Always seems weird that we officially start spring just as spring training is ending, not beginning, but I’m not worried about that right now since I’m just happy that it’s finally baseball season. Last week we talked about players whose value had risen, or was likely rising, or might rise soon, for one […]

It’s the most incredible time to be alive in human history, but it’s not without challenges. For instance, take inflation (please! said Rodney Dangerfield) (RIP). Gas is up, rent is up, groceries are up. You may think Razzball is insulated from such inflationary struggles, but you’d be a blithering fool. Rudy’s been collecting all sorts […]

What is up party people. Real baseball is finally upon us. As fun as Spring Training is, the real thing is just so much better. Last week we covered my Top 50 players for points leagues and now it’s time to dive into the next 50. I actually really like a lot of the guys ranked here and more than a few of them have the potential to shoot up into the top 50. And let’s be honest more than one of these guys will end up way higher by the end of the season if things break right for them. Actually the end of this list is particularly spicy and I can’t wait to watch them. So happy drafting and remember that you don’t win your league at the draft. I’ll be here all season to help you work the wire and gain an edge.

I love baseball. Probably an unhealthy obsession. As much as I love baseball, I somehow manage to hate so many things MLB does. Lots and lots of things. Having games in Seoul, South Korea, a week before every other team plays? Having the Dodgers/Padres play in two games over there then return to play Spring Training games? Those things I can’t get mad about. If they want to grow the game in Asia, sending the Dodgers is likely the best way. Plus, who doesn’t love Graham Pauley? Koreans, get your Graham Pauley shirts before they’re all sold out!
