FanDuel: Castillo Reels In A Big Fish

What’s up, everybody!  As the regular season winds down (shut up!  I’m not crying!!  You’re crying!!), these slates on FanDuel are getting tighter, but the deeper we get into the data, the bigger advantage we have to make it in the $$.  FanDuel has us set up for a 14-game slate to start the weekend.  Once upon a time, there was a strapping young man who took Luis Castillo ($8,500), up and coming stud, with the 73rd pick of their draft.  Throws 95+, they said.  Plus change and breaking ball, they said.  Can’t miss, breakout, they said.  Fast forward to 3 months later when Mr. Can’t-Miss sports a 5.49 ERA and earned a cut off my team (spoiler alert…..I’m the strapping young man).  Well, here we are in September, and guess who’s reeling me back in??  Mr. 1.46 ERA-in-September himself, Luis Castillo; and speaking of reeling, he gets a lovely match-up with the Marlins in Miami.   Going from Great American Smallpark to the friendly confines of Marlins Park (really?? That’s what they named it??) should help Luis Castillo…..as should facing the Marlins’ AAA lineup <insert rimshot here>.  Let’s take a look at the rest of Friday’s slate.

FanDuel: Darker The Berrios The Sweeter the W

Friday’s back and FanDuel has us all-in with a 15-game slate.  For those of you in season-long leagues, we’re in the home stretch and the grind is real!  So, let’s see what FanDuel has in store for us tonight.  For Jose Berrios ($8,500), its been a little up and down as of late, but sometimes in DFS, that gives us a discount in a good match-up.  Berrios gets the Royals on Friday, and for me, the price is right.  Nice match-up with K upside at a price that allows me to get some of the big bats in, which makes Berrios a really nice GPP play.  Cash plays?  We got cash plays…just keep reading.

FanDuel: What Have Rodon For Me Lately?

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages…….welcome to Friday.  FanDuel has us set up for a 14 game slate and I’m here to help you through it.  Today’s slate contains some aces; Kershaw, Nola, Snell, Carrasco, Paxton, Corbin, Tanaka, Cole, Price…..so naturally, I’m going to lead with Carlos Rodon ($8,700).  Rodon’s been really good since his return from shoulder surgery this year.  While I will admit, the SIERA points to regression, I’m going to ignore it some and think more about what he’s done for me lately.  Rodon gets a match-up with the Angels, who have struggled vs LHP all year.  In fact, they only field one above average bat vs LHP…..it just so happens that its really really above average in Mike Trout.  Trout was absent from the lineup on Wednesday with calf tightness, so if he’s out on Friday, Rodon goes from a nice GPP play to a potential cash play.

FanDuel: Luis In The Sky With Diamonds

Happy Friday DFSers!  We’ve got the full 15 game slate tonight on FanDuel, so let’s take this journey together.  Blind resume time!  Including his start on 7/1, the following pitcher has gone 53.1 IP with a 5.74 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 10 starts.  Guesses, guesses??  Nick Pivetta??  Drew Hutchison??  Jordan Zimmermann?  Try, Zimmermann’s opposing SP, Luis Severino ($10,600).  Of the 131 pitchers that have thrown >35 IP over that time period, his 5.74 ERA ranks 16th worst.  Over those 10 starts, Severino’s only gone 6 or more innings twice, most recently on August 8th.  One of the few bright spots on this resume is that the Ks have still been there.  In fact, he’s sported a 29.6% K-rate over his last 4 starts.  Soooooooo, what do we do with Severino?  I think I’ll be fading him in cash, but his strikeout upside always makes him a GPP play.  Let’s take a look at the rest of today’s slate.

FanDuel: Folty Takes His Talents To South Beach

Welcome to another Friday, where FanDuel has us set up with a 14 game slate.  Since all the studs pitched on Thursday (Scherzer, Nola, DeGrom, Bumgarner, ), we have the fun job of picking through the leftovers to find Friday’s stud.  Today I’m taking my talents to South Beach…….to write about the visiting pitcher, Mike Foltynewicz ($). <set up autocorrect to fix every time I eff up the spelling of Folynevix>  Foltyburger’s K-rate has been sick this year, up 7.5% from 20.7% in 2017 to 28.2% this year, and he even gets a small park bump in Miami.  He also gets the pleasure of facing Miami’s lineup which for the season is dead last in ISO and 28th in wOBA vs RHP.  Foltyverter is where I’m starting my lineup on this Friday, so let’s see what we can add to him to make some money.

FanDuel: Any Gibson Friday

Friday’s back and we’ve got another 14 game main slate on FanDuel.  This is going to be a tough slate to get through, as most of the bats I like are high end.  We’ll lead with a mini-discount SP in Kyle Gibson ($8,100), who faces a Detroit team who ranks 29th in wOBA vs RHPs.  Detroit is only projected to have one bat in the lineup with an ISO > .200 in Niko Goodrum, and while I admit Niko is a super badass name, Niko alone does not strike fear into my heart.  Saving a little money with Gibson opens the door up a little to pay up for some of the day’s big bats.  Let’s take a look at the rest of Friday’s slate on FanDuel.

FanDuel: Gotta Be Eflin Kidding Me

Weekend warriors assemble!!! We’re back for another jumbo 14 game main slate on FanDuel, which features Coors and only one SP over $10,000 in Gerrit Cole ($10,500). One of my favorite pitchers on tonight’s slate is Zach Eflin who comes in at $8,500. First of all, the Padres are not good; 29th in wOBA and dead last in ISO and K% vs RHP. Second, Eflin has been really good this year, limiting hard contact to 29%, and gets a nice park upgrade pitching in Petco. Finally, I’m going to implement a little NBA/NHL travel factor. The Padres played yesterday in Milwaukee, so they’re flying back to San Diego (am I the only one who hears Ron Burgundy’s voice??) for Friday’s game. Meanwhile, the Phillies had the day off on Thursday. I really like Eflin for Friday’s match-up. Let’s take a look at the rest of Friday’s slate.

FanDuel: Black and Gold Archer

First Friday after the trade deadline and we have a 14 game slate on FanDuel.  Since my head’s still spinning like my 3 year old struggling to steer the bumper cars, we’ll get through these same faces in different places together.  I’m pretty excited to see what Chris Archer can do with a fresh start in Pittsburgh.  He comes in at a very reasonable $9,000, and faces a pretty righty heavy Cardinals team (could see 6 + the pitcher), that sports a bottom-third wOBA and wRC+ vs RHP.  Let’s see what else this Friday slate brings us.

FanDuel: C&C Music Factory

Happy Friday everybody!  We have a massive 15 games slate on FanDuel, which includes the works.  Coors, multiple aces, and huge implied team totals, so let’s see if we can fit it all in!  Let us begin our Friday by raising a glass for the 2nd greatest 90s lip-syncers (Milli Vanilli is the GOAT, don’t DM me) out there, C&C Music Factory, that made the greatest proclamation of all time, “Everybody Dance Now”!!!  CC Sabathia comes in at $7,800 and faces the Royals, who have been awful vs LHPs.  Sabathia is certainly not a sexy play on a day that has Sale, Scherzer, and Kershaw, but the wily veteran should be a safe play and is cheap enough that you’ll be able to fit in some game changing bats.  Sabathia has been great at limiting hard contact this year and as a -280 favorite according to Vegas, he should be in line for a really nice day.  Let’s take a look at some of my other favorite plays for the day.

FanDuel: Sammy G Indahouse

Welcome back, baseball — oh, how I missed you! Today we’re welcomed back with a 14-game main slate on FanDuel.  I’m not sure if anyone heard the big news, but the Manny Machado rental agreement drama finally came to an end, with the slugger landing with the Dodgers. We might talk about him a little more later, but I want to focus on Baltimore.  Even with Machado, Baltimore was 7th worst in K% and 3rd worst in wOBA. Allow me to introduce to you my minimum-priced SP ($5,500), Sam Gaviglio, who faces the new Machado-less Orioles. On the season, Sammy G’s been a little up and down with a 4.58 ERA, but a 4.01 SIERA, and of the 57 innings he’s thrown this year, 30.2 have been against the Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, and Nationals.  I’m excited to see what Gaviglio can do versus an easier opponent, and at this price ($5,500), you can fit in whatever stacks you want. Let’s take a look at the rest of the slate.

FanDuel: The Most Stackiest Stack

What’s up everybody? Final FanDuel Friday before the AS Break :*(, and we’ve got a massive 15 game slate on FanDuel. I’ll lead with the most boring of hot-takes ever; Alex Cobb is not an ace. Please, please, put down your pitchforks and hear me out. Back in his glory days Cobb threw a power change that was so good it earned itself the nickname “The Thing”.  Sadly, The Thing has disappeared and Cobb has struggled to the tune of a 6.67 ERA this year.  SIERA says he hasn’t been THAT bad (4.58), but, spoiler alert, that’s not ideal either. So why then, are the Rangers‘ bats priced as though they’re facing Chris Sale?? You can go straight down the lineup, starting with Shin-Soo Choo leading off for $3,300 being the most expensive. Both sides of the plate have hit Cobb hard this year, but the Rangers lefties of Choo, Nomar Mazara ($3,100), Rougned Odor ($3,000), and Joey Gallo ($2,800) have a nice combination of floor and super upside pop. This might be a super duper chalky stack, but the combo of not too high priced pitching and Rangers’ prices makes it possible to fit in some fun high priced bats.  Let’s take a look at some other plays that caught my eye.

Fanduel: No Mas Carlos

Happy Friday DFSers!  Unlike yesterday, when we had one clear-cut ace, we have a handful of choices on this 14 game slate.  I’ll cover our cash game SPs in a minute, but I want to lead with Carlos Carrasco, who comes in at $10,500.  Carlos has been more boom or busty (nice) than he has in previous years, but he seemed to have started putting things together with 10 and 11 K outings…..before he took  a come-backer off the bat of Joe Mauer to the pitching arm.  This will be Senor Carrasco’s first start back off the DL, but even in a seemingly juicy match-up with Oakland (active players are a combined 4/53 with 25 Ks vs him), I’m here to push you to fade.  Carrasco will most likely be eased back in (phrasing), since he only threw 58 pitches in his rehab start, and history backs us up here.  In 2016, he hit the DL for a similar amount of time, threw 53 pitches in his rehab start, and in his first start back was limited to 78 pitches over 5 innings.  With the other aces on the slate, fading Carlos Carrasco, who will most likely have a limited upside, seems like an easy decision.  With crossing off one of our higher priced pitchers, lets take a look at what we’re left with.
