Gather ’round all for the weekly Razzball fantasy baseball injury round up!

While I certainly did not mean to foreshadow the COVID-19 outbreak of this week in last week’s edition of Ambulance Chasers, I did. Oblique injuries are so “out”, and COVID-19 is very “in”. In fact, it is “in” a few MLB players.

Do you ever want to just scream? I sure do.

Let’s check out the damage!

American League Injuries

AL Central

Chicago White Sox

Luis Robert (OF): Let’s kick it off with a pretty big but hopefully not serious issue– Luis Robert suffered a groin injury that appears minor. He did not appear on the White Sox roster yesterday evening. Gavin Sheets, AJ Pollock, Adam Engel, Andrew Vaughn, and a few other White Sox will see more playing time in Robert’s absence.

Cleveland Guardians

Anthony Castro (RP), Yu Chang (INF). Owen Miller (INF/OF), Cal Quantrill (SP): They may be the Guardians, but they have not been able to hold off COVID-19 IL. Kirk McCarty, Tanner Tully, Enyel De Los Santos, Gabriel Arias, and Konnor Pilkington have all been brought in to replace Castro, Chang, Miller, and Quantrill.

Detroit Tigers

Matt Manning (SP): Manning has a strained hamstring that has put him on the 10-day IL. Drew Hutchinson is expected to replace Manning.

Victor Reyes (OF): Reyes has landed on the 10-day IL with a strained quad. The injury has been nagging Reyes since Opening Day. Derek Hill will replace Reyes while he is rehabbing.

Minnesota Twins

Sonny Gray (SP): Sonny Gray is on the 10-day IL with a strained hamstring. RHP Cody Stashak has replaced Gray on the Twins’ roster.

AL East

Boston Red Sox

Jonathan Arauz (INF), Kevin Plawecki (C): Arauz and Plawecki are both on the Red Sox IL with COVID-19. They joined Christian Vasquez on the CVD-IL list. Connor Wong will play for Plawecki.

Tampa Bay Rays

Chris Mazza (RP): Colin Poche will replace Chris Mazza who is dealing with a lower back spasm and on the 10-day IL.

Toronto Blue Jays

Hyun-Jin Ryu (SP): Ryu, who is on one of my fantasy teams, has been tough to watch this season while experiencing diminished velocity. While I hate that he is injured, I hope even more that his issues are solvable. Ryu is currently dealing with forearm inflammation and has been moved to the 10-day IL. He began light throwing recently. Ross Stripling will serve in Ryu’s place.

AL West

Houston Astros

Jose Altuve (2B): Jose Ow-tuve found himself on the 10-day IL with a strained hamstring. J.J. Matijevic was moved onto the roster to take Altuve’s place. Taylor Jones was subsequently moved to the 60-day IL to make space. Altuve has suffered from hamstring issues before. However, the extent of the current injury was still being evaluated.

Oakland Athletics

Chad Pinder (INF/OF), Jed Lowrie (INF), Kirby Snead (RP), Lou Trivino (RP): It was a big news week for the Oakland A’s. As fans continue to ditch attending games, several A’s found themselves on the COVID-IL. Infielders Nick Allen and Christian Lopes and reliever Sam Selman were added to the A’s roster.

Kevin Smith (INF): Smith experienced a bone bruise and has been moved to the 10-day IL. Sheldon Neuse played in Smith’s place.

Stephen Vogt (C/1B): Vogt is out with a sprained knee. Other baseball players who have this type of injury are out roughly 2-4 weeks. However, there is no timetable for Vogt’s return right now.

Texas Rangers

Jon Gray (SP): Gray is on the 10-day IL with a sprained knee. Glenn Otto has been brought up to fill Gray’s place on the roster for now.

Seattle Mariners

Luis Torrens (C/1B), Mitch Haniger (OF), Paul Sewald (RP), Scott Servais, Manny Acta: Another case of the COVIDS goin’ ’round! This is not what I means when I asked for “More kissing in baseball.” Anyway, Penn Murfree was called up to replace Sewald while he is out.

National League Injuries

NL Central

Chicago Cubs

Clint Frazier (OF): Ouch! Frazier is on the 10-day IL with the -itis…..appendicitis! Alfonso Rivas was recalled in Frazier’s place.

Cincinnati Reds

Daniel Duarte (RP): Duarte is out with elbow inflammation on the 10-day IL. Alejo Lopez was called up to replace him.

Mike Moustakas (3B): Moustakas joins the 10-day IL again with a strained bicep. His injury is not expected to be “long term”. TJ Friedl and JT Riddle were called up to assist in Moustakas and Jonathan India’s absence. Alejo Lopez and Brandon Drury are also expected to help.

Tyler Naquin (OF): Naquin was placed on the COVID-IL 19 but the type of illness is currently undisclosed. Nick Senzl may play in his place.

Tyler Stephenson (C): Stephenson was placed on the 7-day IL for concussion protocol. Mark Kolozsvary will play in Stephenson’s place in the interim.

St. Louis Cardinals

Drew VerHagen (RP): VerHagen is out with a hip impingement and on the 10-day IL. Packy Naughton has been recalled in VerHagen’s place.

NL East

Miami Marlins

Paul Campbell (RP): Campbell is on the 10-day IL with a strained elbow. Daniel Castano has been recalled to replace Campbell.

Washington Nationals

Hunter Harvey (RP): Harvey is on the 10-day IL with a strained forearm. Harvey was recalled to replace Mason Thompson who was sent to the 10-day IL. Erasmo Ramirez will take the place of Harvey.

Sean Doolittle (RP): Doolittle has had a great start to the season, but he has experienced a sprained elbow that has put him on the 10-day IL.

NL West

Colorado Rockies

Garrett Hampson (INF/OF): Hampson is on the 10-day IL with a hand contusion. He has been practicing throwing and catching. Hampson serves a number of positions including as a pinch runner for C.J. Cron.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Andrew Heaney (SP): Heaney is on the 10-day IL with shoulder discomfort. Zach McKinstry replaces Heaney. Heaney, a seemingly formerly broken man, is on fire this season. Tony Gonsolin also been highlighted as someone who will step up in Heaney’s absence.

San Francisco Giants

Alex Cobb (SP): Cobb is on the 10-day IL with a strained groin. Yunior Marte replaced Cobb on the roster. Cobb should return when eligible to come off the IL on April 29.

Are there any other injury updates?

Well, you likely saw Byron Buxton appear to be seriously injured, but, as it happens, Byron Buxton is not seriously injured. He should be back in the line-up today.

See you next week for more pain and some potential gains on Ambulance Chasers!
