Greetings, Razzobites! It is I, a messenger from the realm of Pain and Suffering.

Last Friday, was an absolute bloodbath for IL entries. 12 players were added to the IL on April 29. Additionally, 13 players were added to the COVID-IL this week. The COVID numbers continue to rise with outbreaks in Cincinnati, Minnesota, and Boston over the last week.

Let’s jump into some injury highlights!

American League Injuries

AL Central

Chicago White Sox

Andrew Vaughn (OF/1B): In the last edition of “Ambulance Chasers“, I asked “Are the Chicago White Sox a sustainable venture?” as Eloy Jiminez joined the IL and Andrew Vaughn took over in LF. Vaughn acquired a hand contusion and is now on the 10-day. Danny Mendick was recalled to replace Vaughn in the interim.

Detroit Tigers

Tyler Alexander (SP): Alexander is out on the 15-day IL with a sprained elbow. Wily Peralta and Drew Hutchinson could see more playing time during Alexander’s absence. Triple-A candidates include Elvin Rodriguez, Alex Faedo, Joey Wentz, Nivaldo Rodriguez, and Chase Anderson.

Kansas City Royals

Jake Brentz (RP):  Brentz is on the 10-day IL with a strained flexor tendon. RHP Matt Peacock will replace Brentz.

Cam Gallagher (C): Gallagher is out with a strained hamstring. He will be replaced by M.J. Melendez.

Carlos Santana (1B): Santana is out with ankle bursitis. Emmanuel Rivera will replace Santana for the interim.

Minnesota Twins

Luis Arraez (INF/OF), Dylan Bundy (SP): The Twins added Arraez and Bundy to the COVID-19. At the time of publication, there was no plan to bring in replacements for either player.

Carlos Correa (SS): Correa has had issues with his middle finger on his throwing hand. Although it was originally reported as a fractured finger, the finger is only bruised and sore. Royce Lewis was called to replace Correa while he heals.

Kyle Garlick (OF): Garlick is out with a strained calf. Trevor Larnach and Jose Miranda are expected to see more playing time while Garlick and Sano (see more below) are on the IL.

Bailey Ober (SP): Ober is out with a strained groin. Cole Sanders will replace Ober during his stint on the IL.

Miguel Sano (1B): Sano is undergoing knee surgery after he tore his meniscus by jumping up and down while celebrating with teammates. There are mixed reports on when Sano will return that range between “later this season” and “not at all this season”. Jose Miranda will likely capitalize on Sano’s absence.

AL East

Baltimore Orioles

Chris Ellis (RP): Ellis had arthroscopic shoulder surgery and will be out for the season. Unfortunately, Ellis replaced John Means who is also out for 2022 after having Tommy John surgery.

Boston Red Sox

Rich Hill (SP), Kiké Hernandez (OF): The Red Sox have had a breakout of COVID sending Hill and Hernandez to the COVID-IL. Jarren Duran and Johnny Schreiber have both been called up to replace Hill and Hernandez.

Toronto Blue Jays

Tayler Saucedo (RP): Saucedo is out on the 10-day IL with hip discomfort. Bowden Francis will replace Saucedo in the interim.

AL West

Los Angeles Angels

Archie Bradley (RP): Bradley is out with a strained abdominal muscle.

Austin Warren (RP): Warren is out with a nasal fracture. Elvis Peguero will step in for Warren and Bradley.

Matt Duffy (INF): Duffy was added to the COVID-IL.

Seattle Mariners

Matthew Festa (RP): Festa is on the IL with elbow tendinitis. Festa had given up HRs three games in a row. There is speculation that George Kirby will have a chance to play.

Mitch Haniger (OF): Haniger, who had just returned from COVID-IL, suffered a high ankle sprain after rolling his ankle after fouling a pitch. Abraham Toro will replace Haniger.

Texas Rangers

Albert Abreu (RP): Abreu experienced a sprained ankle that landed him on the 15-day IL. His replacements are speculated to be Brock Burke, Matt Moore, or Garrett Richards.

National League Injuries

NL Central

Chicago Cubs

Ethan Roberts (RP): Roberts is out with shoulder inflammation. He has been placed on the 10-day IL.

Cincinnati Reds

Jake Fraley (OF): Fraley is on the 10-day IL with knee inflammation. TJ Friedl will replace Fraley.

Jonathan India (2B): India rejoined the IL with a strained hamstring. Alejo Lopez will replace India.

Joey Votto (1B), Nick Senzel (OF), and Tyler Naquin (OF): Votto, Senzel, and Naquin were all moved to the COVID-IL.

Milwaukee Brewers

Jake Cousins (RP): Cousins is on the 10-day IL with an elbow effusion (fluid buildup in the elbow). Vic Caratini has been moved back on the roster after being on the IL.

St. Louis Cardinals

Edmundo Sosa (INF): Sosa is on the COVID-IL.

NL East

New York Mets

Trevor May (RP): May will be out 8 to 12 weeks with a stress reaction (arm). 10-day IL.  Thus far, Adonis Medina has replaced May. David Peterson was also recalled by the Mets.

Sean Reid-Foley (RP): Reid-Foley has a partially torn elbow ligament and is on the 10-day IL. There is speculation that the injury may be season ending. Yoan Lopez will replace Reid-Foley for now.

NL West

Arizona Diamondbacks

Mark Melancon (RP): Melancon was moved to the COVID-IL. My colleague JKJ can give you some great info about what to expect on the Razzball Bullpen Chart.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Mitch White (RP): As we get close to the end of this edition of “Ambulance Chasers”, I must ask: Would you like more COVID? Well, I have great news. There is only COVID left to report. White has been added to the COVID-IL list.

San Diego Padres

Dominic Leone (RP), Brandon Belt (1B): Oh what’s that? You would like more COVID-19? Leone and Belt were added to the COVID-IL.  Jason Krizan, Ka’ai Tom, and Mauricio Llovera will replace Leone and Belt as they recover.
