David Wright has a stress fracture in his lower back. It’s the new Mets, same as the old Mess! I find it hard to believe this is still The Curse of the Shirtless Bernazard, but who else is evil eyeing them? George Foster? (BTW, If George Foster ever evil eyed you for longer than 5 seconds, you’d turn to stone. Fact!) The Mets are downplaying Wright’s injury, but what else is new with the Mets? Let’s look at their truthiness in some recent reports: In 2009, “Reyes will be out for a few days.” In reality, he’s only fully recovered two years later. In 2009, “Beltran will be out for three to five days.” In reality, he missed two seasons. “K-Rod and his stepfather, an up and coming videographer, were remaking the “Beat It” video.” In reality, K-Rod blew Kabuki white powder into his stepfather’s face and hit him over the head with a metal chair. So the Mets are saying Wright might miss only a week and a half to two weeks. Um, okay. Even if he returns quickly, a stress fracture in his lower back isn’t going to hurt his power? Yeah, that’s rhetorical. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Jose Reyes – 2-for-5, 2 steals. Now has 16 steals on the year. How do you motivate overpaid athletes? With the allure of being vastly overpaid.
Mike Pelfrey – 7 IP, 1 ER, 8 baserunners, 1 Ks. That’s nice, I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him and I throw like a girl. My apologies to our three girl readers, I’m sure you are all bulldykes with strong arms.
Hanley Ramirez – Moved to the two hole, which is where you find crap, and he went 0-for-6. Voila!
Josh Johnson – 5 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners, 3 Ks. Left the game with a forearm contusion. No word yet on how long he’ll be out, but once someone reads it somewhere else they will update us in the comments.
Justin Turner – Overdrive! 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI. Know why I mentioned the double when I don’t usually? Cause I’m trying to find nice things to say. Go with it.
Cliff Lee – 6 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 12 baserunners (6 BBs), 4 Ks. Six walks for The Adverb? Did he throw that many all of last year? Hopeful Lee, it’s just a mechanics thing-a-ma-whosie.
Chase Utley – Could be back within the next two weeks. So this is either a great time to sell or hold. I don’t think I’d buy unless I really needed to shake things up on my team and I could get him for cheap. If your entire league is tentative because of Utley’s recent health track record is rivaling that of the “It’s merely a flesh wound” guy, then you hold. If someone wants to take the risk for a decent price, you sell. Deal? Yeah, deal.
Dustin Ackley – Guess what ya’ll we’re gonna talk about the Mariners! Snooze. But we’re talking about the top Mariners prospect! Yawn. But it’s Dustin Ackley and he hit 5 homers and stole 2 bases in Triple-A last year over 237 plate appearances! Burp. So far this year, he’s been better with power and speed — 5 homers and 6 steals through 38 games. His average has been yawnstipating at best. Speaking of yawnstipating, Ackley’s projected for the kind of numbers I don’t like in fantasy. He’s potentially a 12/12 guy this year if called up within the next two weeks, as it’s being reported he will be. Assuming he has 2nd base eligibility (which he does not yet have in Yahoo for some godforsaken reason), he’s a MILF (Middle Infielder I’d take a Flyer on).
Michael Pineda – 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 7 Ks with his 5th win and a 2.45 ERA on the year. He’s great, I like him a lot, so don’t take this the wrong way, but the Twins’ hitting is offensive in all the wrong ways.
Colby Rasmus – Strained muscle in his stomach. He’s saying he’ll be fine. You know, Colby’s a survivor.
Albert Pujols – 0-for-4 as he started at third base. Tony La Russa said, “I feel bad about what I’ve been doing to people’s fantasy teams with my indecision regarding a closer, so I thought I’d throw the nerds a bone.”
John Lackey – Sent to the DL. The Red Sox said his elbow strain might have something to do with his 8.01 ERA. So, does that mean he’s been hurt for the last two years?
A.J. Burnett – 5 2/3 IP, 6 ER, 9 baserunners, 3 Ks. Hey, 2010 A.J. Burnett good to see you. Say hello to your mother for me.
David Price – 5 IP, 5 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks. Was a tough matchup against Curtis Granderson, who hit his 14th homer. Who are you, Curtis Granderson? Why are you trying to steal Jose Bautista’s thunder? He is Joey Bats. Who are you, Courtesy Gratin? What’s that, free cheesy tater tots? That doesn’t even make any sense, and neither does your insane power. Now go to your room.
Johnny Damon – Hit his 7th homer. Has 6 more homers than Morneau. Of course he does, the world makes perfect sense!
Derrek Lee – Strained oblique. That’s sad for Lee and his family. No one else should care.
Max Scherzer – 7 IP, 0 ER, 9 baserunners, 2 Ks. I blame his lack of run support on his searching-for-Golem sounding name. Chabon would’ve gave him the win.
Andy Dirks – 1-for-2. Member when I said I was half-joking about Leyland batting Dirks 3rd? Yeah, he batted him 2nd instead. Theory! With the rise of cigarette prices, Leyland has been forced to use his extra lineup cards for tobacco rolling paper. So he only has one lineup card and he just puts players in the same lineup spot as the player they are replacing.
Jhonny Peralta – 1-for-4 with his 6th home run. The Silent H has 4 homers in his last 5 games. He too is hotter than a habanero’s ass. Still don’t know what that means but if I say it enough times it’ll catch on.
Aroldis Chapman – To the Disgraceful List. It’s always amazing to me how clubs can get away with DL’ing someone who isn’t injured but is simply sucking. And, perhaps, that’s neither funny or interesting.
Jonny Gomes – Hit a home run and that usually means five more will follow. Though, to be honest, I didn’t realize how poorly he’s been. He’s down to .188 on the year. Yo, Gomes, you need an oddly-placed H in your first name.
Shaun Marcum – 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 4 Ks. You’re welcome.
Paul Maholm – 6 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks vs. the Nats. Sorta glass half full: Sure, it was an easy match-up, but he’s now pitched well in six of his last 8 starts. Sorta glass half empty: His strikeouts to walks isn’t pretty. Sorta who cares: It’s Paul Maholm.
Danny Espinosa – 1-for-3 with his 5th homer. All he does is hit home runs! Kinda true with his abysmal average (.196 on the year).
Cole Kimball – 1 IP, o ER with the win. That Cole Kimball sure plays a mean baseball!
Colby Lewis – 9 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks. Really pulled his shizz together in May. April ERA 5.70; May ERA 2.35. Also, worth noting is his batting average against lefties is .273; vs. righties it’s .224.
Vin Mazzaro – 2 1/3 IP, 14 ER. He comes from my birthplace, Hackensack, NJ. Yesterday, the Indians treated him like a hacky sack.
Matt LaPorta – 4-for-4, 4 RBIs as the Indians moved to 25-13 on the year. Somebody wake up the Comatose Indians Fan, your team is more than just a racist mascot!
Dexter Fowler – Caught stealing twice. Now has 5 caught stealings in 7 attempts. Good thing he didn’t choose a life of crime.
Jacoby Ellsbury – Hit in the leadoff spot, 2-for-5, batting .302 and stole his 13th base. Member in the preseason everyone was like don’t draft Ellsbury, Crawford’s gonna steal his mojo? Um, Crawford’s hitting .208 and batting between Lowrie and Varitek.
Mark Reynolds – Hit his 2nd homer in three games as Mini Donkey finally draws some brays.
Kyle Drabek – 7 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners (6 BBs), 2 Ks. Too many BBs, he’s gonna shoot his eye out doing that.
Adam Lind – Placed on the 15-day DL with back soreness. Just so we’re clear how ridiculous it is what the Mets said about Wright possibly being back in 10 days. Lind has back soreness and is going on the DL; Wright has a stress fracture in his lower back. Oh-kay.
Frank Francisco – 1 IP, 1 ER and the save. He doesn’t seem remotely capable of handling the closing job, yet I think he probably does stay the closer all year, if that makes sense, and I think it does but I’ve had nine beers tonight and something a guy named Phil called a lavash.
Tommy Hanson – 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 10 Ks. First name, Hommy. Second name, Tanson.
Grady Sizemore – To the DL. I wonder if he has one of those punch cards so he gets a free sandwich with this DL trip.

Need a replacement for a while due to injuries, which of these schmo’s would you take in an OBP league?
Crisp, Torres, Coghlan, Damon, Brantley, Wallace, Gomes, LaPorta?
Many thanks as always.
Also, what are your thoughts on Eric Thames? He was called up to replace Lind’s left handed bat
Brilliant post, Grey, pretty much every line. Loved the whole Wright bit … esp. Lind and Wright.
Grey,
Pitch Shields against the Yanks tomorrow?
Career ERA against Yanks 4.91, Home ERA this year 1.72…
Thanks in advance.
Nice post, dude. I’m not even sure it was intended as a joke, but the JJ line still made me laugh out loud.
Hypothetically, would Ryan Ludwick’s little hot streak be worth my attention if I had just lost Grady Sizemore?
@Grey
Can you rank these 3 for ROS? Damon, Brantley, Torres. Thank you!
from the middle of OH, go tribe!
Wrights been playing with this “stress fracture” for a month. I dont know if he goes to the DL but I assume he will and whats worse is he can probably play with it, he’s just going to be in pain all year til he can rest it for a long period of time, like a whole off season, cust kayin…..
Hey Grey,
First time commenting but I’ve been a loyal reader for a while now.
Guy in my league has expressed interest in Utley, who I’ve stashed on DL until now. He speaks of giving Kendrick and maybe even Justin Upton. What are your thoughts on Justin Upton? Is he going to turn things around?
I also am thinking of trading for Holliday after I get Kendrick, but I may just settle for Heyward–thoughts on Heyward turning things around?
Sorry this is a lot, but I would appreciate the feedback immensely!
12 team Yahoo H2H mixed league btw
@Grey, I am an avid reader and love your site! However, my one gripe is how you totally and completely dropped the ball on the busts/schmohawks/overrated guys. Everything else has been excellent, but sadly, i followed your advice for the most part. Carlos Gonzalez, Andre Ethier, JOSE BAUTISTA, Rickie Weeks, Prado, Billy Butler, Price, Cano, i mean come on man :/ Its early but id be hardpressed to find a more inacurate list of potential busts.
@Grey NOT a bulldyke :/
Freaking ridiculous it has taken almost a week and a half to place dickwads Sizemore and Lind on the DL.
Grey : In your rundown about Josh Johnson, surprised you didn’t elude to your pre-season prediction that he would be hurt and only pitch 150 innings. Is this the start of that?
Also who do you like for a temp filler, Coco Crisp or Jhonny Peralta?
@B-rude:
Yes, Shields is nasty right now.
Oh and also, Drew Stubbs over Jay Bruce right? I am thinking it’s probably more probable and maybe even better to go for Stubbs instead of Upton.
This fantasy business is killin me…I don’t know why I bother!
Sorry, Jay Bruce not Drew Stubbs
Okay, sorry for hogging the comments, but I operate in a different time zone and the trade finally formulated:
Utley for Kendrick and Justin Upton/Jay Bruce
Yes/No and if Yes, who?
Thanks!
@Mr2Bits: they can backdate the DL stint, if they want to or need to.
@grey and others: So my deal of Cargo/Phillips for Werth/Youk/Hamels deal was left up, and countered with cargo/phillips/oganda for werth/youk/hamels? I thought about countering the same deal plus I get K-Rod. I’m giving up all the sexy in this trade I feel. I need to win out a little somewhere. Plus I dont even like Werth lol, but fantasy wise I feel he’ll get his 25/20 and his avg is going to come up….. thoughts?
Grady sizemore, Victor Martinez, and pinerio (laA) for Weaver and Juan Rivera. I get Weaver. Should I do it?
@Grey: Is it time to buy Colby Lewis? I think he might be better than Narveson. Concur?
@Tony:
I know that but I’m because their sorry asses have been eating a player spot with their “they are day-to-day, expect them in to play tomorrow” report for the last 5 days.
Grey – Wow, 4 Met write-ups in 1 day! Two years ago I traded for Beltran, when he was going to be out “3-5 days” Didn’t work out to well. In your summation, you forgot to mention Johan Santana, “who had a slightly sore shoulder, but would be able t pitch through it”, and Ryan Church “getting over symptoms of mild concussion.” BTW, what ever happened to Church? At any rate, the Mets medical staff is led by Dr. Hackenbush, DVM. At any rate, great column
Start or not start? Ubaldo, Liriano, Wandy,
Thanks, as always
Would you go with Reynolds or Rolen over Figgins at third base? I’d go with Rolen, but I’d hate to miss a mini-donkey hot streak if he’s starting one.
Okay, Grey, I need some serious guidance.
My team:
c: Wieters
1b: Butler
2b: K. Johnson
ss: Reyes
3b: Zimmerman (DL)
of: Braun, CarGo, Holliday
util: Rollins
dl: Hamilton, Lind
sp: Kershaw, Liriano, Hudson, De La Rosa, Volquez, Jackson, Billingsley, Cueto
rp: Soria, League
dl: Broxton, Aardsma, Beachy
What in God’s name should I be doing here? League is out-stinking the hippies in Seattle and only Jehova knows what’s going to happen with Aardsma and Broxton. Should I just say the hell with it and drop them both and grab Jamey Wright and Padilla? The other managers in my league with NOT six people on the DL would probably grab them both up if I drop them.
I also wanted to possibly take a shot with Teheran, in which case I would be almost entirely punting Saves, dropping Broxton and Aardsma, and rolling with Soria and League/whoever you suggest I grab in his stead as my closers.
I’m dumbfounded. I clearly have the best team in my league with no injuries. I’ve been bouncing between 2nd and 4th the whole season with six on the DL.
What would you suggest? As always, thanks a ton.
Is Zimm going 2 get healthy or should I try and trade zimm for Crawford eventhough my team is sb heavy
@Grey: You’ve upset one of the girl readers.
Hey Grey. Picked up The-Silent-H-Peralta last night to fill in for Wrong, I mean Wright.
Rolen and M.Reynolds are also available…
Did I choose the right guy for my (HOPEFULLY) temporary 3B fill in?
Good stuff throughout Grey. Also trying to replace gimpy OFs. Please share your thoughts on the ranking of these castoffs as replacements: Swisher, Torres, DelYoung, Abreu, and Gomes. TomAto-Tomato? Or might any of them particularly standout?
& a post “you’re welcome” Thank You for pimping Marcum.
@B-rude: eh, i don’t put much stock in career numbers against a team. the 2011 yanks aren’t the same team as the 2006 yanks. i’d throw shields, he’s been outstanding and the yanks lineup outside of granderson hasn’t been all that imposing lately.
In a way, aren’t we all from Hackensack?
ICH BIN EIN HACKENSACKENER!
Grey:8×8 h2h league….
Ubaldo vs SF
Oswalt @ STL
sit or start today?
….I would love feedback from any/all other commenters on my Oswalt/Ubaldo post.
Ya know, I’m glad CarGo has somewhat turned his shizz around for the time being, but could he please refrain from doing it against my pitcher? Thanks.
any/all commenters:should I start trusting Beckett again?….
he has a long and infuriating history of doing serious damage to my ERA/WHIP….
a guy in one of my leagues(10 team h2h 8×8 keeper) is pretty desperate for a SS and I have Rollins and Andrus.
so would you give up Rollins straight up for Beckett?….Andrus’ numbers are very similar to Rollins so far,and Andrus should be even more valuable once Hamilton and Cruz come back.
what do y’think?
“Member in the preseason everyone was like don’t draft Ellsbury, Crawford’s gonna steal his mojo?”
Member in the preseason someone was like “don’t draft Ellsbury, Wait and land Gardner 70 picks later, cuz they’re the same, Tomato-tomato.”
Member?!
Who needs a house out in Hackensack? Is that all you get for your money?
@Grey re:Dirks
When they were talking about this ugly kid (be tee doublya his girlfriend is a hottie from Kansas) two hours before the game on my local radio show, and announced he was going to bat second without batting an eye… Yep, I thought of you and laughed on the inside. Thanks G-money.
@Grey:
Start Oswalt off the DL tonight @StL?
@Grey: 2 quick questions for you. 1. Start both Ubaldo and J. Sanchez against each other in COL today (or just one or the other). 2. Is Tabata and Morrow too much to give up for Hamels (16-team mixed)? Thanks so much!!
Hi Grey — I’m really hoping you can help me out on this. My 20-team roto is hurting in pitching, not the least because I have both Volquez and Liriano on staff. So I have a two-part question regarding pitching in a deep league like this:
–First, would you start either of them tonight? And who do you think is more likely to turn it around at some point?
–Also, with these starters I’m falling behind on innings. There were three OK waiver options for spot starts tomorrow (Tehran, Brandon McCarthy and Vargas) and I picked up the first two. Right choice? The other options on waivers include Fister and Correia. If I was roster one or two of these five guys, who would you suggest?
Many thanks!
Start Espinosa and he sucks, I sit him and he rocks. I don’t know whether to put him at 2B or in the 2PP at the Belmont Stakes
@MattW – I know you asked Grey, but I can give you a bit of local flavor.
Most of the talking heads and scribes can’t believe that the Sillies decided to bring Oswalt back as fast as they did. First rehab outing, he threw mostly curveballs, and his fastball was never clocked above 90mph. He certainly didn’t dominate at the A-level Clearwater club during that outing. Can’t (and won’t) speak to the Cards offense, but one thing I would keep in mind is that while new to the Phillies staff, the Cards have seen Oswalt a bunch over the last few years. Couple that with his rehab outing and diminished fastball speed, and I would be sitting him tonight.
Sorry for the interruption, now back to your regularly scheduled programming…
@Grey: Drop Wallace for LaPorta? (8×6, H2H with OBP, TB, K’s)
Also, doesn’t Brett Wallace looks a bit like Goomba from Mario?

[MLB Picture Day]
Photographer: “Hey Brett, get over here! Your turn.”
Brett: “Hold on a second, I just have to get some honey from this hornets’ nest.”
@Buddo Chezuski: Nice Billy Joel reference! Movin’ out!
Hey God,
A) Would you scoop up Ramon Hernandez, Carlos Ruiz, or Chris Ianetta if your hurting at Catcher?
B) If your stud third baseman just went down with a baby scratch on his lower back, would you pick up Scott Rolen, Mark Renyolds, Encarnacion, Alvarez, etc. etc.?
Thanks man!
Until last night, no pitcher in the history of baseball had allowed 14 earned runs in a single relief appearance.
oh, Add Ty Wigginton to B)
Grey, curious about your thoughts on Mazzaro’s performance last night? (tongue firmly planted in cheek)
Apparently I skipped that entry about him, I’m a dope! I’m on my own personal disgraceful list.
Love the SNL reference. Anything Samberg is money. “Hey Donkey. You’re a Donkey, I like that. You eat apples right? I produced Entourage.” That’s gold.
Watched the Detroit/Toronto game last night. Frank-Frank was lucky as hell to get out of there with the save. Freaking Inge came within about 10 feet from a walk-off HR, a shot that would have been out of many other ballparks. Then the useless Don Kelly hit a gapper that hung up just a little bit too long. In other words, guys that can’t hit above the .230 mark were teeing off on Frank. He’s nothing special.
Was Mazzaro on anyone’s team at all? (including regular and razzball)
The only good thing about Wright’s injury is hopefully it’ll convince the Mess to trade the veterans away for some decent prospects.
@TheBlackWatermelon: reynolds seems to be heating up a little. i was on the verge o dropping him a week ago and since then he’s hit a few bombs, had a 2 hit game, and picked of a SB. hopefully it’s a sign of his BABIP rising out of the .200 range and the start of the long climb back to a .250ish avg for him.
Domonic Brown or Michael Brantley?
thanks!
I watched the Phillies on espn last night. The strike zone was tiny, Cliffly owners can relax.
Is Choo a buy low candidate? I can get him for pretty cheap but he’s been all kinds of awful and I’m hesitant to pull the trigger.
Just got offered Gallardo for Madson and A. Torres. My pitching is solid (Verlander, Scherzer, Chacin, I. Kennedy, G. Floyd, and E. Jackson), but it looks like a good deal for me. Thoughts on Gallardo putting it together? I play in a league where SLG and OBP count, so when Torres is playing, he’s gold, not many .800+ OPS guys who can steal 30. My OF is currently Granderson, Braun, A. Jones with Torres in the UTIL hole and I just picked up Bernadina.
Grey,one more question-
wtf is going on w/ the Braves Teheran/Minor situation?….
I was hoping that Teheran would be Beachy’s replacement,and stick around for at least a month or so,but he will apparently be heading right back to AAA,And Minor made his last start in AAA and wont start tommorow,so….
who do you prefer longterm,and which is more likely to contribute THIS season?
@ Grey: Do you think Jordan Walden will keep his job? Or will it be Scott Downs job soon enough? Would you prefer to have either of those 2 over Padilla? Thanks
For 3B (12-team 5×5 h2h), please rank: Figgins, Peralta, Reynolds, J Lowrie
Pretty sure I’m going to accept the trade offer to acquire Reyes. I would be sending either Hamels OR Haren…anyone have preferences? Pretty even IMO.
@Salty Balty: i’d do that in a heartbeat. yovani’s last 2 starts have been better, and he’s a potential top 15 or so SP. you’d be giving up a borderline droppable player and a temporary closer with cuddleboy tendencies.
@papasmurf: I had Mazzaro on my Razzball team, only 34.67 points. When I heard about it, I was expecting more. At least it offset that all my sucky hitters going off last night.
@MrHappyTime: I personally think he keeps it. The options behind him aren’t any better, and while he’s blown a few lately, he’s still K-ing guys and getting pretty unlucky.
Feel free to call me naive about Wright and the Mets (I’ve got Wright on my team and am clinging to anything I can!), but according to Stephania Bell’s article at ESPN, if Wright’s injury really is just a stress fracture, that is much better for his return than any soft tissue or muscle damage. She says that rest really is the cure and that bone heals “exceptionally strong,” so he may be back to health without it affecting his production too much when he returns.
I know I’m crossing my fingers!
Great read today! Trade question for you…I have Zobrist at Util and I’m working on a trade with someone who needs him at 2B (I have Phillips there). Of Marcum, Greinke, Garza and Pineda, which SP would be the best bet to trade for and/or which would be fair value for Zobrist?
@Beau: I slightly prefer Hamels due to his higher K/9 rate and pitching in the NL.
@ Grey – “I’m sure you are all bulldykes with strong arms.” – EPIC
Raise your hand in if you were starting Vin Mazzaro in a Razzball league!
*raises hand*
It’s like the bizzaro equivalent of when Shawn Green did this:
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/boxscore/05232002.shtml
@Chili Davis Con Carne: grienke -> marcum -> garza -> pineda
i only rank pineda that low because of innings limits. fwiw grienke is also rocking rates of 12K/9 and 1.20BB/9, but a .340 BABIP and 39% LOB rate. his FIP and xFIP are 2.40 and 1.59. perfect time to buy low.
No post on Eddy Jackson? Didn’t he allow 27 baserunners last night? He has been a dark mark in my super rotation of Felix, Marcum and Hommy Tanson. What gives man?
@Jake: I hope you and Stephania are right.
@Chili Davis Con Carne: Start at Marcum and work your way down.
in a deal which would you rather toss in Liriano or Ogando? I know Ogando’s been good, but will he be on an innings limit? I’d think he will be, AND Lirano’s been terrible, but can he be this terrible all year long??? I’d hate to include Lirano as the piece to sway the deal and he does a 180 and bites me in the ass down the road ……. faith in Ogando? Throw liriano to the dogs? coin toss?
It’s like the Mets realized that all the best teams were using “Wall Street Strategies” and, seeing how the most successful Wall Street guy they knew was Madoff, decided that this meant that in order to succeed in baseball they have to deceive their clients/fans. It’s working out great, guys! *cough* Lehman Brothers *cough*
@Jake: Stephania Bell’s a bulldyke. Cust kayin’.
@Chili Davis Con Carne: I think trading for Garza is the best fit for both sides. Got to love the K’s. I’d rank them Marcum, Garza, Greinke, Pineda. I love Pineda, but he’s going to have an innings limit.
@OaktownSteve: That’s awesome. I also like that the erroneous editing of Nautly’s quote allows me to excerpt this:
“What makes him good is that he’s (Shawn Green)”
@Tony:
and the trade would be:
Philips/Cargo and either ogando or Liriano for
Youk/Werth/Hamels……. Thoughts
@The Grandyman: you’re a douche.
Thinking of offering A. Torres and Madson for Heyward? Heyward’s shoulder is worrisome, but does the upside make it worthwhile?
@Tony: i’d bet on liriano doing a 180 over ogando keeping up his pace.
Do you still thnk there’s virtually no difference between me and ellsbury?
@Royce!: nice spot
Which side?
Kemp/Holliday for Teixeira/Braun
along with @mrhappytime…wtf walden, you blow a save, you go 1-2-3, you blow another…he cost me my pineiro win, too. Drop him for Kenley Jansen?
Also, I have wright and lind…so things are rough right now. Should I try to trade for a 3B or pick up one of these guys off waivers: wigginton, punto, or lowrie.
@ThePoonTycoon: thanks poon, i like saying that, poon…. ha…… so whats your thoughts on my deal then?
My Phillips/Cargo/Ogando for his YOUK/Werth/Hamels……?
I hate giving up cargo but i did just steal him for adam jones and broxton. Phillips is way over his career avg, .330? He’s going to come back to the .275 range. Youk could stop the david wright bleeding and if wright comes back fine after some “rest” we have 3 UTL slots, this deals more about value not needs…. hamels would join my Lester & Hanson…. giving me a 3 headed Monster?
I appreciate your help, you usually have solid opinions.
@Grey: Dump Alex Rios (after just picking him up) for Sam Fuld? I’m in 1st in a 12 team ROTO league and am WAY behind in steals…
Danny Duffy called up.
@The Grandyman: and who of those guys, besides Bautista and Price are just raking the shit out of the ball or pitching out of this world? Prado has been great for the last two weeks, up until then – NADA – and please raise your hand if you think he’s going to continue at this pace. The rest of those guys, he’s been spot on. CarGo – he didn’t say he was going to be worthless, just not to expect last year. And right now CarGo is hitting a cool .230. Ethier is hitting above .300, but his other offensive counting stats are, well, offensive. He also never said Cano would be a bust, just not Superman. And Weeks has been good, but not GREAT. And please explain to me how Butler has been good? Sure he’s not been crap, but for where people were drafting him (or expected to draft him) he hasn’t even come close to that kind of potential. And I, for one, am very happy that I avoided him due to Grey’s advice.
I think I’d be hardpressed to find a more inaccurate understanding of what Grey meant with his preseason postings, as well as the current stats at this point in time in the season.
@Exactly: you crazy man! Drop JW? He has 3 blown saves. I think that’s the same number as Kimbrel. You dropping Kimbrel?
By the way, last night’s blown was a bloop 2 out hit by Coco, an SB and a tough two out hit on a 98 mph heater by Barton. It was effing raining, cold, miserable, extras after a delay on the road. It’s not like the guy went all Ryan Franklin.
Gotta be patient. I’m reminded of an exchange between Homer and Moe Sizlak:
Moe: This thing will flash fry a buffalo in 40 seconds.
Homer: Awwwwwwwwwwww…40 seconds??? But I want it now!
@Tony: me personally, not a HUGE fan of it for you, but I can see doing it. My issue is Werth. He’s worthless, useless, whatever. He’s just not good. If you could swing someone a little better than him, I’d definitely be on board. CarGo is looking like he’s coming around a little bit. Swiping a couple bags and hitting a few bombs that his value is WAY above Werth.
I’d also like the deal a lot more if you could do Phillips/Ogando for Youk/Hamels. Doubt he’d do that, but I like that deal a lot more for you.
Grey : Would you lose any of these minors guys for Danny Duffy?
Jacob Turner – P
1.08 Danny Espinosa 2B/SS WAS – 85 AB
2.02 Gary Sanchez C NYY
3.05 Jordan Lyles P HOU
FA 2011 Mike Minor SP – 45 IP
And of course, Yahoo doesn’t have him in their player universe.
it’s like the grandyman forget that “busts” is all relative to draft position.
also, i think pretty much everyone that looks at any kinda numbers beyond HRs was skeptical of bautista.
that said, teheran or duffy? who is most likely to stick for the year? is dufy up for good or just a spot replacement? i know teheran will have about a month to prove himself before beachy is back.
@Eddy: Ahhhh! But they will…AFTER they blow the trumpets, light the bonfires, and make a PSA on every major news outlet…
@Carl: Crisp
@Carl: Has some power, AL-Only for now.
@bogbert: Thanks!
@B-rude: Pitch him everywhere right now.
@Lines: Thanks!
@Mike: Torres, Brantley
@Lines: For sure re: Ludwick.
@Tony: Yeah, that’s not better.
@Eric: I like Heyward and Upton. They can turn things around quickly.
@The Grandyman: I’m not thrilled either. A few bad calls here and there, though they’re not all bad like your list makes it seem.
@Shannon: Aw, I’m just playin’, ladies.
@Mr2Bits: Peralta… Johnson never pitches a whole year.
@Eric: I’d take the Kendrick side with Upton.
@paul: Yup
@William: Concur
@Paulie Allnuts: Ha! Start Wandy.
@Wiley: Reynolds
@stynyr: Grab Padilla and Teheran.
@Dirt: I’d take Crawford.
@SwaggerJackers: I know, think down to two.
@birdis78: That’s fine.
@zombie: Torres, Swisher, Abreu…
@Commish Cauda: Ha!
@IgnatiusJReilly: I’d let them sit for one game.
@IgnatiusJReilly: It’s fair.
@Jack the Ripper: Gardner’s hitting near .350 this month, still plenty of time for him to steal 15 bases in a month.
@Buddo Chezuski: Ha!
@Michael Bourne: Ha!
@MattW: Not in all leagues.
@Mike: I’d stay away from Coors. I’d take Hamels.
@Enrique: You picked the right two. I’d sit the SPs today.
@nyydj2: Ha!
@Dad: Go with LaPorta… He does.
@TheBlackWatermelon: Iannetta…Reynolds
@frank rizzo: Yeah, agreed.
@papasmurf: Rudy had Mazzaro on his Razzball bench. Hehe
@Cedric Ceballos: Brown if he’s on the bench.
@Charlie: Depends how low.
@Salty Balty: I’d take Gallardo.
@IgnatiusJReilly: I’d prefer Minor.
@MrHappyTime: Right now, Padilla. Downs could see saves within a week if Walden doesn’t pull his shizz together.
@Charles: Reynolds
@Beau: Send Haren.
@Jake: I read that too. She also said it needed rest for a few weeks. A few weeks will mean the DL, not what the Mets were saying yesterday.
@Chili Davis Con Carne: What Poon said.
@JoeyP: I told people to bench him last night. Tough start, he still had Ks, too many baserunners.
@Tony: I’d toss in Liriano.
@royce!: Ha
@Joey Gladtsone: Braun
@Exactly: Hold…Lowrie
@Nick: Eh
@Ozzie: Thanks for the heads up!
@Brett Gardner: He’s hitting close to .350 this month, wouldn’t say his season’s over yet.
@Mr2Bits: Sanchez
@ThePoonTycoon: Duffy if Teheran is sent down after his start.
@Wilsonian: Im not the biggest fan of Werth either, i liked him more in Philly, but he did put up 27 HR’s and 13 SB’s last yr and a .296 avg…. 106 runs? I mean he’s no slouch and thats on a crappy WAS team. Zimm will come back…. I think Cargo is good but his “value in theory” is much higher than his full season value, which I’m not overvaluing him at all and I owned him last year! 25/20 and a .290 avg would be max…. which is about what I think werth will get me, PLUS the fact i’d get hamels over ogando? and Youk is slumping and phillips is over his head….. I’m basically justhoping everything balances out, LIKE IT SHOULD and i’d win? oh and Ogando gets shut down or bombs soon? The phillips/ogando for Youk/hamels aint happening hahah, its a nice thought, its not even close tho.
I was offered J. Weaver and Juan Rivera for Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez, and Joel Piñeiro. who is getting better end of the deal, would you do this trade. Please help.
@Tony: ha but then again cargo’s at 5hr 6sb’s already one hot month and he’s on pace for 30/30 again…..
@Tony: Well Werth’s numbers that you’ve listed are from last year when he was in Philly. I don’t see him coming close to that this year. I can definitely see you doing the deal, simply for Hamels. Phillips is playing over his head, but he’s no slouch, either. Ogando will get shut down and/or will regress horribly, so I could see it for you. I’d also take a little peak into whether he would do someone other than Werth, if not, go ahead and do it.
…”good thing he didn’t choose a life of crime”—classic
“Bulldykes”–crazy funny. I would love to see some pics of our few loyal female readers. Personally, I don’t know any hot women who love fantasy sports…but if I found one I may file for the big “D”…LOL
@Grandyman–feel free to become a regular at another site.
Pena is heating up guys. Buy low is closing. I’ve picked him up for scraps and he is paying off—plus Grey liked him a lot more than other ‘perts in the preseason.
@Grey: Pick up Padilla and Teheran and drop who? Broxton and Aardsma?
Would you drop Dunn for Pena in an 8 Team league? He’s killing me, and with the injuries to Wright and Lind, I have to play him and LoMo in my UTIL positions and would really like someone to actually produce from those spots.
@oaktownsteve:
Thanks, I didn’t catch the end, i’m here on the east coast, just worried scoscia’s gonna pull him b/c he’s crazy. I’m glad it was a bit of bad luck.
@Paul:
Unless you’re in a 18 team mixer Rivera belongs on the wire (if they’ll even have him). What it comes down to is: can you afford to lose V-Mart? I would think V-Mart straight up for Weaver seems reasonable if you need SP and have depth at catcher. If he insists on Sizemore, I would ask for a hell of a lot more then Rivera—at least a #2/3 OF IMO.
BTW–Pineiro is not much more then a streaming option for certain match-ups. Good luck.
@Grey: How about dropping Aramis Ramirez for Fuld? I have Gordon for 3B w/ Sandoval on DL
@Wilsonian: man why was i thinking werth was already in WAS for a year last yr? ughhh…. idk…. phillips/ogando isn’t going to net youk/hamels…. youk is basically equivalent to phillips, hamels and ogando are no where close…
Grey — In addition to the pitching problem above (Lirano and Volquez on staff), losing Beachy to the DL, and drafting Morneau in the fourth round, I also have Wright at 3B. Somehow, I’m still competitive (moving between fourth and sixth among 20 teams) but that may not last long …
My question is about Wright. My only other 3B-eligibile players are M Izturis and Gordon. So I probably need to make a move. But making trades in my league is tough, and it’ll be tougher to replace Wright with all the injuries at 3B this year. I’m going to try to work a trade but if I can’t who do you like among the very thin waiver pickings:
–Justin Turner (I’m hoping he’ll qualify at 3B in a week or so)
–Chase Headley
–Aaron Miles
–Chris Johnson (he really heat up last June after starting slow)
Also, I’ve got three 1B-eligible players (Morneau, Smoak, Robot Jones): what kind of 3B could I get trading one of them and would you advise I do that?
Many thanks!
I amend the above list of possible 3B options on waivers to also include:
–Allen Craig (needs 3 more starts to qualify there)
–Chris Davis (also needs 3 more starts to qualify)
–Blake DeWitt (needs 4 more starts)
I’m asking a lot of questions today … so I just bought you a couple of daiquiris to say thanks.
@MattW: Oswalt is said to have a 60-65 pitch count tonight, so keep that in mind when setting your lineup as he will almost certainly be out by the end of the 5th inning. If he gets into any trouble early, you’re looking at a no decision as best case scenario.
@Tony: well, it’s not a bad deal at all. I’d just look to see if there is another option other than Werth there. I don’t like him and would tend to avoid him at all costs. I don’t like losing out on the young guy (CarGo – 25 – who could go 30/30 again) for a slightly older, less productive guy (Werth – 32 – who COULD go 25/20).
@DHill Dragons:
Where did you read that? Find it hard to believe that they would run him out there for an at best 5 IP outing just so they can chew up their pen with no days off this week.
Grey,
For tonight I’m trying to get Alexei Ramirez in my lineup against Matt Harrison.
Sit Castro (vs. Volquez) or sit Kemp (vs. Wolf – 0-5 lifetime with 5 K’s)?
Head to Head Points league so K’s are -1
RIP Harmon
@Wilsonian: ya werth in washington is a question mark, 25/20 would be top end, if i knew i would get 20/20 i’d probably do this, Hamels for ogando balances it back out i think…. Youks trend to miss 15+ games a year isn’t exactly easy on the mind either….
@Tony: like I said, I could easily see it being done, and I think Grey said he’d do it. I’d just try to see if there is someone other than Werth. I have NO faith in the guy.
@Mr2Bits: @DHill Dragons:
ESPN news update is echoing the info that Oswalt will have a pitch limit
@Mr2Bits: I heard it on the radio this morning (local Philly sports station) and also see the same bit of information on the preview page of the game on mlb.com. But I agree with you, Oswalt should have probably made an additional rehab start and Worley could have gone full tilt.
Which 2 of these 3 guys do you like for the rest of the season: Torres, Tabata, and Rios?
Nice Kavalier & Clay reference in the Scherzer comment.
@paul: I’d take Weaver.
@Dr. Stats: Thanks!
@stynyr: Lose Aardsma for Padilla.
@Wilsonian: Eh
@Nick: Bleh
@Enrique: Headley’s been lukewarm… Try to trade Morneau for Aramis.
@DHill Dragons: Castro
@The Sequential Hermaphrodite: Last two.
@Joey: Thanks!
@Wilsonian: Ya I’m not a big werth fan, but then again fantasy wise I think he can suffice, there’s really not anyone other than werth that I can see fitting in this deal…. slumping guys he owns are Dunn, Crawford, ya thats it….. and i highly doubt crawford could replace werth and i dont really want Dunn in this league thats 10×10 and counts singles, doubles, triples, HR’s etc, basically batting avg is pretty important….
@Grey: That’s Ms. Bulldyke to you, Grey.
This season I’ve traded away: Sean Burnett (after his 3rd saved game), David Wright and Roy Oswalt (a month ago), Jered Weaver (after his 6th start). For them, I got Matt Holodeck (so named because he makes our every fantasy come true), Colby Rasmus, Matt Kemp, Andrew McCutchen, and Andrew Bailey. I feel like the guy in the movie running in slo-mo as the car explodes behind him. Of course, in the director’s cut, you see that he lands on a claymore, but still.
@Smokey: That’s sad, one of my dad’s all-time favorites. I just finished homebrewing an Amber Ale and needed a good name. Harmon KillerBrew it is.
@Smokey: Sad day.
@Grey: Thanks for the Aremis advice. That gives me an idea of what kind of a trade idea to shoot for.
Regarding the waiver options, does your comment that Headley’s been lukewarm mean he’s the best of the otherwise cold list of would-be 3B options I mentioned?
Here’s the options again: Justin Turner, Headley, Aaron Miles, Chris Johnson, Allen Craig, Chris Davis, Blake DeWitt. Aside from Headley, anyone else there worth keeping an eye on? Or are they all eh?
No more questions today … promise!
@Scout: Smiling Emoticon
@Long Bawls: Nice
@Enrique: Headley’s the short term pickup… They are all eh. Can watch Davis.
@Grey: How long until Uehara closes in Baltimore? Over/under 12 saves this year for him?
@Grey: I’ll hold for now.
In a 16 Team H2H Keeper, I’ve got Jennings waiting in the wings in case he gets the call soon. I’ve also got Napoli not doing shizz. I have a really hard time dropping him, because I know he’s still going to end up with 25+ bombs. Would you drop Jennings or Napoli for Lucroy or Hernandez, or hold right now?
Bruce for Gallardo. Who wins?
@DHill Dragons:
Interesting. It’s almost worth not even starting him. I am in a WS league and see no way in hell he reaches 6IP. Then again, I could use the k’s.
@The Grandyman: i mean, he’s not hitting on 100% of the overrateds like he did in some other years, but come on, complaining because he told people not to draft cargo 6th overall? that’s looking great right now.
@ThePoonTycoon: well, you know what i’m gonna say. i do think it was possible to figure out that bautista was for real.
“the numbers” say a lot of things. at some point, especially in unusual cases, you can probably find some numbers to support whatever conclusion you’re already heading for. when grey and i were arguing about bautista for the entire offseason we both used lots of numbers.
…by the way, andres torres is my other bff from last year, so i’m gonna have to start yelling at you guys about him too if you don’t stop calling him borderline droppable and asking if he’s better than brad hawpe. swing adjustments 4-eva
@Mr2Bits:
QS league
@wily mo: cargo’s hit 4 hr’s in the past 17 days…… cust kayin’ sometimes a little warm weather or a couple balls dropping in is all it takes to start a guy off…. now would i have taken him 6th overall this year, NOPE!
@wily mo: who said anything about brad hawpe?
Since we’re getting close to passing the Hey-It’s-Still-Early line in the schedule, what to do about Dan Uggla?
Mark Reynolds is waiver wire fodder in most ten-teamers (even at a shallow third base) while Uggla is still regarded as a Top 10 second bagger. But Uggla’s essentially been Reynolds with less steals upside. What gives with the differing perceptions? And what to do about Uggla? His Mendozaness cant be started every day over 162 games… can it?
2 questions:
Boggs or Padilla?
Marlon Byrd, Helton or McLouth?
Deep 14 team mixer.
@Grey
Someone just dropped Liriano in my 10 team H2H league. Ted Lilly is also on the wire. Should I drop Arrieta to pick up either Liriano or Lilly? Thank you!
When a pitcher earns a ridiculous number of runs he´s been Mazzacred, hehe. I propose this to be an official term in Razzball quazi-terminology, ha.
What two would you keep out of the following…
Arrietta
Edwin
Baker
@ThePoonTycoon: hawpe’s a metaphor. i just mean people asking if torres is better than waivers p. schmohawk III. yes, he is.
Grey-
I’m in an 11 team roto. I’m currently 4th, and 1st is WAY ahead. My offense is great, but I am lacking in Wins, ERA, & WHIP. I feel like I need to trade for a #1 pitcher. (Liriano, Cole Hamels, JZ, Edwin, Stauffer, Arietta.)
So, I offered KRod & Marmol for Marcum to a guy who needed Saves, and he accepted, but now I’m gun-shy. I’ve been killing Saves on the waiver wire this year, so I feel I’m OK. I have Marmol, Capps, Madsen, Kimbrel, and Krod. (Believe it or not, Kimbrel & Marmol are the only ones I drafted. Yes, someone dropped KRod at one point.)
So this is a no brainer, yes? No worries that Marcum’s best pitching is behind him in 2011? Thanks for any advice…….
@Smokey: Like a number of Twins fans, after watching the Twins play last night (and fall to 12-27), he lost his will to live. (too soon?)
Rest in peace, Killer.
@Matt: He can start closing tomorrow and he’d be lucky to get 15 saves all year. Too injury prone.
@Wilsonian: Napoli for Lucroy.
@Derrick: Bruce
@Stophe: He’s a poor average guy, always has been, last year was an anomaly.
@mj: Padilla, Byrd
@Mike: I’d prefer Lilly.
@jeffjam: Ha! Will run it by Rudy.
@agarthered: Top two.
@AP: It’s fair if you need an SP.
heyward with a basehit and an SB…. todays a new day!
@Tony: yeah, no, nobody ever said cargo completely sucks. but last year he struck out a lot and didn’t walk that much and had a crazy BABIP and the scouts say he still isn’t actually all that good at hitting a breaking ball. colorado helps him there, so as coors heats up he probably will too, but there’s first-rounders and then there’s first-rounders.
a big part of my drafting strategy is to kind of ignore homers and steals and just focus on a guy’s plate approach. the way i put it is this. so you’re trying to choose between two guys in the second round. stop for a second and imagine that your favorite team is in the world series. there’s like two runners on in some late inning and your pitcher seems a little off. now forget their statlines from last year and just imagine each hitter standing there at the plate. really picture it. you’re sitting on your couch holding a bud light lime and your pitcher has to pitch to this guy and this is happening. which one are you less happy about? draft that guy. it works really well. and cargo is iffy by that test.
@Mike:
Yesterday I dropped Lilly in two leagues and I am just about to drop Liriano-never-no as soon as he gets shelled in Seattle which is as sure as sunrise. I tried to trade both of them and nothing worked out and I feel I can even out that abysmal performace of theirs over the course of season with solid pickups iof Teheran and H. Bailey respectively.
Danny Duffy getting the start on Wednesday.
which side do you prefer:
oswalt, lind, ed-jax vs. cliff lee, trumbo, chris johnson
Dying for saves…. best chance for most saves rest of year btwn Broxton, Contreras, Downs, Rauch?
Which side of the trade would you rather be on?
SIDE A: Receives Stubbs, Posada, and Huff
or
SIDE B: Receives CarGo and Soto
Also, would you trade Narveson for Danks?
Thanks!
@Tony: Nice
@GMen: Thanks for the heads up!
@Exactly: Lee
@Dmonkey25: Broxton
@MouseRat: B…Nope
@Willy Mo: The dirty little secret about Grey, you, me and the rest of the world. Neither these players nor their coaches, scouts or even their mothers know what they are going to do from AB to AB, day to day, week to week, month to month and year to year. Nobody knows nothing. It cracks me up the number of people that come in here and ask Grey “hey should I start this guy today…” Grey as good at he is at running this website has basically a 50/50 chance, same as you or me. If it was any different, you’d be an idiot not to be in Vegas living a more sustainable version of Charlie Sheen’s life.
Even the argument about Bautista, yeah both sides have their numbers; you could construct equally plausible narratives pre-season to say he’d regress or he wouldn’t. Really that information is pretty much useless. There are so many factors that go into success or failure in MLB that results are basically indistinguishable from arbitrary.
Yeah it’s more complicated than that. I’m happy to expound..but are you happy to listen?
Razzball community : What is a funny/good name using “Joey Bats”?
Offered Alex Gordon for Dempster, but I think I can get Trumbo for the same guy. who should I take (if either)?
@Grey: what do you think Grey, i need an upgrade in pitching.
I’m giving:
Brayan Pena, Alex Rios, Derek Holland, and Brian Duensing
I’m getting:
Hank Conger, AJ Burnett, Jarrod Dyson and Vin Mazzarro (who i will drop and pick up Duffy)
12 tm AL only league
you do this deal?
@OaktownSteve: yeah, i mean, in any given year even pujols might come out and not do anything. i know, i’m talking crazy, right? but theoretically, it could happen! yet you can’t draft that way.
it’s all betting, not certainty. you’re right about that. but there are better and worse bets. learning to look at information and figure out what it means and what you should do about it is a skill you keep developing your whole life. i thought i was really smart when i was in high school. now i think i’m kind of dumb. but thinking you’re dumb makes you smarter. paradox!
Start Pedro Alvarez or Mike Aviles? If Alvarez, do I drop Aviles for Torres, Beckham, Markakis, or Dominic Brown? Do you like Torres or Maybin better for rest of the year?
Pull the trigger on Chacin & Farnsworth to get Gallardo?
Gambling on at least a partial bounce back and a few more IP, even though Chacin is putting up better control #s at the moment.
Also have Zimmermann and maybe Pineda, Beachy, Wood, D Hudson & Lilly who could go in place of Chacin but not sure any would get the deal done.
Already holding Johnson, Weaver and Haren so he’d be Ace-ing on the cake.
Thoughts? Needling glares? Thanks.
Greetings from Hackensack.
My offense stinks (12 team, mixed, 5×5 roto). I need help in every offensive category.
I was just offered Hanley Ramirez and Ibanez for Nelson Cruz and Tabata. Am I crazy for not wanting any part of this deal?
@willy mo: but you have to know what you can know and what you can’t. Trying to predict player performance is a suckers game. What the numbers game does is tell you about strategy, probability ranges, risk management. Then you have to basically pay attention to the goings on in the game, qualitative information etc.
@wily mo: all i heard was bud light lime…. i try and take guys i have confidence in, which is what i think you’re saying, but guys with a past history to back that up make me feel better, cargo doesn’t have that yet, hence why i own most of these guys in their breakout yr and never again…. until they get undervalued….
@Grey: Drop Bud Norris for Danny Duffy?
@Grey: so are you thinking that Lucroy’s numbers will be better than Napoli over the course of a season?
@OaktownSteve: so, uh, what’s the upshot here.
Drop Espinosa, Alvarez, Aviles, Frenchy, Boesch for Duffy?
@Tony: bud light lime was the most important thing.
a track record is definitely a positive. most of the time i go by that too. but you can’t make it a hard and fast rule. well, you can. but then you’re not going to get the bautistas or the torreses. and they do happen. … granted, usually not quite to the extent of this particular bautista.
i’l take risks on breakout guys, but only if i see a concrete reason why they’re different from flash-in-the-pan breakout guys. with both bautista and torres, the concrete reason was the fact that they rebuilt their swings and then both immediately started breaking out. torres actually had a year-plus of good stats in the minors before he showed up in the majors and kept on doing exactly the same thing. people just wrote him off because he was old. but back when he was prospect-aged he’d been coached to slap the ball on the ground and use his speed. 32-year-old torres is a completely different hitter.
of course now that he’s finally got it figured out he’s probably going to start age-declining immediately, which is sad.
@GMen: goodness no. if norris is your worst SP, just stand pat. norris has already gone throw his adjustment period to major league hitters. enjoy the improved control, great K rate, and mid-3.00 era. the odds of duffy besting that are slim to none.
grey,duffy -wheres he fit into this group,dempster ,ogando,britton and lewis
@Grey…Thanks for always addressing all our questions!! I have 2 proposals on the table for someone that wants Kimbrel from me. I would get both Ogando and Hellickson OR just Greinke. Do I choose quantity or quality? (Currently have Ubaldo, J. Sanchez, A. Sanchez, Morrow, Peavy, Lilly at SP – 16 team mixed)
Geez, Tyler Colvin got sent down today. Mather (dingle)Berry had him pegged for 40 plus home runs this year. What happened?
@Team Benson: Trumbo
@Epic punk: Nope
@Will: Torres
@Jake in Columbus: Can try and send Zimm instead of Chacin.
@L-Boogie: I’d take Hanley.
@GMen: No
@Wilsonian: Nope
@Wilsonian: Eh
@AL KOHOLIC: End
@Mike: Quality
@nyydj2: I was just writing something about that for tomorrow’s roundup.
-Wallace homered to deep left center
…
Where’s Wallace at? Where’s the boy, String?
So the guy in last place in our 12 teamer offered me (1st place) a trade.
My J-Up, Pence and DLR for his Halladay, Liriano and Castro.
I’m pretty good across the board but do have 4/6 in ERA/WHIP, primarily because of my crappy closers. I don’t want any part of this trade but wouldn’t mind going hard at Halladay. Don’t want Liriano at all and am confused with Starlin. I see 0HR and 0SB in the past two weeks and wonder how much an upgrade he’d be over Hill or Espinosa who I’d be dropping.
I’m in no hurry to change things so would you do
His Halladay + Castro (or Kendrick) for my Pence + DLR
Poor Wandy. That’s at least the second time that’s happened this season.
@Grey: Starting Garza @ CIN today?
Blown save for Melancon…
@Steve:
Thats what they get for pulling him. Would have been a win had they let him throw a CG. When your closer shituation is as bad as it is in Houston, let the guy go out there in the 9th. Houston’s lucky they did not flat out lose in the 9th as the defense on the first two batters was unreal.
Who to pick up for a bench stashee? Tabata, Brantley, or Mini-Donkey?
@wily mo: Ha!
@knighttown: Second trade isn’t bad.
@Steve: At least, for sure. You’re getting comments now, right?
@tHe sHiT: Yup, a bit risky though.
@Wilsonian: Yup
@Professor Chaos: Reynolds
@Grey: Yup.
ubaldo isnt walking anyone but thier hitting him pretty good
@Grey: Yeah i know. Like you, im a K-whore, so im starting him…lets go Heyward!!!
News/Analysis Headlines Preseason Outlook
Wright facing 4-6 week layoff?: The New York Post reports that David Wright (back) could face long-term effects from the fracture in his lower back, an injury that the Mets revealed on Monday. Dr. Arnold Criscitiello, a spine surgeon, said that while Wright could return as soon as his 15 days are up if he goes on the disabled list, the better course of action would be to do a 4-to-6 week layoff. Wright, who will go for a second opinion before a final decision as to whether or not he will be placed on the 15-day disabled list is made, will be shut down for at least the next 7-10 days.
(Upd
@nyydj2: Berry said 40 homers for Colvin in his “You heard me” or whatever that’s called.
Paraphrasing:
He makes a bunch of longshot calls, and if a couple come in, then he can brag about it. If he misses, hey, it’s just a stab in the dark!
Colvin could be a nice player. But since the Cubs OF consists of three Lou Gehrigs, he just isn’t getting a chance.
Completed a trade yesterday sending Pineda/Torres/Lind and getting Uggla/Garza. Needed an upgrade at 2B and Pineda will probably not help me much in H2H playoffs in September. Also was heeding the “Get Garza at all costs” sentiment from the FIP post last week.
I have two starters tonight currently on my bench cuz I’m gunshy about wrecking my cats after a good start yesterday with Hommy and Homer.
Oswalt @ St. Louis and Garza @ Cincy. Should I hold?
I have Weaver still to go, Zimm got rained out and skipped today but have him Sunday vs. Baltimore,
Hommy and Homer again over the weekend
and Gio/DHud tonight already.
Oz and Garza will come around again this weekend as well. I can only make 7 more starts out of all this, so I need to eliminate 3 of them.
Should I keep Oz/Garza on the bench tonight? Who else would you sit this week?
@Grey: Kemp/Dunn for F-Her/Krispie?
grey trumbo and cruz jennings or ubaldo hamilton
@Grey: Aight, how bout this one
I give Rios, Liriano, and Holland
I get:
Weaver, J. Dyson and Danny Duffy.
@AL KOHOLIC: guh…
@tHe sHiT: Cool
@AL KOHOLIC: Not surprising.
@nyydj2: Sit them tonight.
@Fletch: Kemmp
@AL KOHOLIC: Tough call… Ubaldo…
@Epic punk: Not good.
Grey, H2H ,5×5
I have B.Phillips on my team with Utley sitting on the DL…. I was just offered Stubbs and Feliz for Tabata and Utley.. Would you do this? I figuring I would still get my speed back and well as some power. I lost J.Broxton earlier this season and I am a sucker for saves (even though it is one category). What would you do?
The rest of my offense..

@Grey: ha sorry man, i’m still plugging away at this. would it make a difference if i offered duensing instead of Liriano?
I give:
Rios, Deunsing, Holland,
I get:
Weaver, dyson, duffy
Ok, so I’ve currently got Lind and Strasburg on the DL in my 8 Team H2H Keeper – we only have 2 DL spots. I’ve also got Wright who isn’t on the DL yet. Here’s my question:
Do I leave Lind and Stras on the DL and hang out with Wright just being inactive until Lind comes off (fingers crossed that he’ll be back next week when his 15 days is up)? This would leave me with NO bench bats at all and playing Dunn and LoMo in my UTIL spots.
OR do I drop Stras and pick up a bat when Wright goes on the DL? The bat I would most likely pick up is Pena.
@tggq21: Take it and run.
@Epic punk: Yeah, go for it.
@Wilsonian: How many do you keep? Less than 10, throw Strasburg back.
the thing about matthew berry isn’t even that his advice is bad or his predictions are wrong. that’s like par for the course. the thing is that he clearly believes he’s some kind of genetically engineered comedy hybrid of bill simmons, grey and ken tremendous when in reality he’s a guy who’s not funny at all and kicks off his fantasy baseball columns by forcing everybody to scroll past boring 12-paragraph essays about his relationship with his father. it’s actually kind of sad to watch. i mean i guess there are a lot of guys like that on the internet, i just wonder how he got the job he has.
but don’t tell him i said so!
man. bautista didn’t homer last night. now torres is 0 for 4 in the matinee. my whole world is crashing down around me.
@wily mo: Ha! re: Bautista – sometimes love hurts.
Grey : Are you pitching Oswalt tonight in a QS league with what is said to be a limited night for him?
@grey- I have wright and gordon at 3rd. Somebody just offered me longoria for my pence and hanson. I should reject right? Also, I fear a lot for wright. I know from personal experience that any injury to your back will drastically hurt your performance.
@Dad:
re : comment # 122
how cool is that ?!!!
i only drink a couple of beers a year , but ,
would love to have one of those with my kid .
enjoy the times .
@Mr2Bits: Nope
@Martin: It’s fair, depends how easily you can lose Hanson.
Grey: I’m thinking that with Beachy on the shelf for a month or so that the typical rookie pitchers valueless September could be chock full of value in this case. Does this seem feasible? I traded Pineda and hung on to Beachy with September in mind.
@nyydj2: im dl ing him in hopes of the same thing,now he will be usefull down t the wire
@Grey:
mitchell and glen are quickly becoming my favorite reality show folks .
the episode where they go rabbit hunting , and end up saving a snapping turtle , provides an insightful glimpse of life in the swamp .
are you up on it , or not your style ?
@Grey: just pulled it off:
i gave : Rios, Duensing, Liriano, Borbon
i received: Dyson, Weaver, Duffy, and Jesus Montero
@Grey:
Need to fill a hole at 3B… Freese, Callaspo, or Rolen?
@wily mo: Yeah – nice 0/5 there. Just what I need to start the day as I try to reach a 3 in AVE.
@Grey: I was offered Weeks for Haren. Gotta reject right?
grey…still pondering dealing stubbs, as i am flooded with SB. got offered tim hudson, pence + a 10th round pick (keeper league), for Stubbs. i’m really only concerned about this year. jew like?
over under for stubbs at 270-24-75-110-45
@nyydj2: It’s okay.
@chata: I don’t know what show you’re talking about.
@Epic punk: Sounds fine.
@Tele: Rolen
@ThE sHiT: Yup
@John Drunks: Looks solid for you.
@Grey:
btw , that mystery donor was my wife .
@grey- can you rank sherzer, chacin, daniel hudson, cueto please?
@Grey: Im looking to replace Bourjos. Brantley, Seth Smith, Luwick, Gomes, and Austin Jackson are all available. Which one to pick up or hold onto Bourjos?
@chata: I figured with the same last name and I know the three girl readers. She was donating for keeping you out of her hair?
@Martin: Scherzer, Hudson, Chacin…
@ThE sHiT: I’d hold for now.
@Grey: I figured, none of the names listed are sexy. Thanks.
Orioles-Red Sox rained out. I hate this stupid ass weather.
I think 2011 has already surpassed the total of rainouts of the entire 2010 season.
Freakin’ lost Desmond, Tabata and Ellsbury in my main H2H league. Not to mention Helton didn’t play, who’s supposed to make up for Wright and Lind!!!
Ugh!
And Detroit and Toronto is in a delay?!? All I got left is Figgins, Dunn and Napoli.
AND THANK GOD NAPOLI IS STARTING.
Three ?’s for you and my 10 team 5×5, please.
A) I need a bat for Wright: Torres, CPena, Lowrie, Melky, Brantley, AJax, Helton, Ludwick
B) Who to drop:Minor, Ed.Jax, harangatang
C) Desmond or Bartlett
Thanks as always!
Trying to replace Wright in a keeper league, would you trade Dominic Brown for Alex Gordon?
Thx
You know you’re taking it all a bit too seriously when you spend 20 mins poring over numbers trying to make up your mind between Nick Masset and Edward Mujica.
In a league that doesn’t count Holds.
@ThE sHiT: No problem.
@Buge Hoobs: Pena…Minor…Desmond
@KF: Sure
@Steve: Mujica
@Grey: Heh, was more of an observation as to my misplaced obsession, than a cry for help (emoticon).
Actually went Masset for now because of his K numbers but will probably end up with Mujica.
Should I start Danks tonight vs. Texas?? (12 team roto)
@Grey: 5 x 5 roto, ianetta, lucroy or napoli?
Thanks.
@Grey: Just traded Fuentes for Bumgarner in a 16-team H2H where I’ve also got Feliz, Padilla, Melancon, Santos, Rausch, Wood & Thornton (holds is a cat). Good enough return?
I hate you Shields.
@Steve: Take that.
@One Man Wolf Pack: Little late for that question.
@herschel: Iannetta
@Dad: Sounds solid.
@Steve: Me too.
@Grey: Now that I’ve benched him, expect a 5-inning beaut from Oswalt with a ton of run support.
Just read that Harmon Killebrew was the inspiration for the MLB logo.
Pick one to sit: J. Upton, Pence, Morrison, Bruce, Francoeur, Soriano, Heyward
@Steve: Yeah, of course.
@vinko: Heard that’s not true.
@Steve B: Frenchy
grey 2 questions…
1. whatchu thinking on lawrie bud? good investment in a keeper?
2. raf soriano to the DL…cut his a$$ or na (worth the hold?)
How does Oswalt look? Anyone watching?
hi grey,
do you think boggs gets another chance to close? or is he done and stuck behind salas/sanchez brothers..
thank you
Is the shine starting to rub off Frenchy a little?
Good call Grey!
“People have said my design was based on Harmon Killebrew, but it wasn’t,” said Dior, whose logo first appeared on uniforms in the 1969 season. “Mine wasn’t based on anyone — just a nondescript figure with a bat.”I didn’t model it after any one player,” Dior said. “It was intentionally ambiguous in every way, including righty vs. lefty. I was only told to create a nondescript figure, and that’s what I did.”
Farns and Roberts (Ari) for Rios (Chi)?
@the grate one: 1. Sure 2. Cut
@Steve: Eating dinner.
@pjtres: I might get a chance to close there.
@Steve: Yup
@vinko: Yup
@wire: Rios
Can I just remind Hudson that this is the Padres?
@Grey: Earlybird special?
Need some cheap speed, Bernadina or Mayberry?
Yep, the same Padres that have been raking lately.
Ross or Teheran going forward?
tonight: so awesome.
it’s been raining here for three days.
half the games are rained out.
my players in the games that are actually being played are hitting .077 so far.
but at least chase headley has a steal.
thanks chase. seriously.
@wily mo: I see your .077 and raise (lower?) you a .063.
@Steve: Nah, I was just hungry.
@ruah: Bernadina
@C.O.C.: Ross
@wily mo: Ha
@Grey: Eat anything interesting?
@Steve: makes me feel a little better about my .150 average on the day…
Yikes. I didn’t expect this when I picked up Masset. Not sure I’m that happy about it.
12 team roto and someone just dropped Liriano? $100 waiver bank how much do you spend?
Thanks
@Steve: But I’m takin’ it.
@Steve: Nah, just chicken and rice. Tasty but not that interesting.
@Dan: $3
12 team roto someone just dropped Kelly Johnson. $100 waiver bank how much do you spend?
Dynasty points league — Chapman for Liriano?
@Grey: Would you try to swap Morneau for Carlos Pena at this point?
It’s H2H where we count OBP and I’m kinda struggling for AVE as it is…
I just gave Utley/McClellan/Narveson/Hughes/Lackey for D.Hudson and Romero. My pitching now in this DEEP 16 team H2H league:
Lee
Oswalt
Beckett
Romero
Hudson
Burnett
Beachy
Ross
Colon
Teheran
We start 7….
@Dan: You’re giving me barely any real info. One big thing, do you need these guys? Johnson $3.
@Doog: It’s fair, I’d take Liriano, but both are more for the future.
@Steve: Sure
@Grey: Actually, ignore that last question. I’ll just bench Morneau and pick up Helton.
@C.O.C.: Looks fine.
C’mon D-backs. Don’t f*** this up.
@Steve: Attaboy.
Looking to try to swap Krispie/Walden for an OF bat. Which one(s) would you target:
Heyward, Crawford, Stubbs, Stanton, J.Up, Pence?
My team is done today except for Gio and Kuroda. So far no earned runs. I feel like Sisyphus.
Is Sergio Santos the best reliever in all of baseball…I mean he’s a top 5 reliever right now on the White Sox…You know what Sergio Santos is the best reliever in baseball…I’m in love…
If you thought last year was the year of the pitcher, read this:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=kurkjian_tim&id=6534824
But come back now, y’hear?
Pick a side:
Pence, Melancon, De LaRosa, Hill or
Halladay, Kendrick, Bell
and is it close?
Castro vs. Kendrick
Hill vs. Espinosa
@Grey: What do you know about this Perkins fella on the Twins? Like him as an MR?
@Steve:
last year WAS the year of the pitcher .
this year is the year of the other guy’s pitcher .
@knighttown: halladay easy
@Steve: Wow, a real honest to goodness win!
@knighttown: What AL said.
@knighttown: Castro….Espinosa
@Steve: Eh
@Grey: Might even get one out of Kuroda too.
No more than I deserve after Wandy was robbed blind earlier.
Guerrier on to close it out in LA.
@grey Guerrier got the save for the Dodgers not really sure why? Padilla has not been overworked lately, in fact he has not pitched since the 13th…Another closer shituation brewing in L.A.?
@Steve: Damn, wish I would’ve known that 20 minutes ago.
@Grey: Commented as soon as I knew.
Then picked him up in the RCL.
@Steve: No, I know. Cust kayin’.
I offered Wright, Berkman, Soriano, Rios for Bautista, Morrison, Juan Pierre and Derrek Lee. Am I giving up too much? I’d drop Lee and Pierre since I have Nelson Cruz coming back soon and I can pick up someone like Brett Gardner as the fourth.
Jonathan Lucroy or Yadier Molina
Need to lose one to put in a claim for Pena: C Patterson or Bernadina. Have both for supplemental SBs.
Grey,
Which side do you prefer for the rest of this season? (14 Team, H2H)
Youuuk / Pineda
or
Bautista
Thanks Unc
so , i guess i was the only one to drop guerrier last night .
@chata:
much worse than sonuvabench .
was ahead of the pack .
now , my impatience has put me at the back .
@Grey Padilla was not used due to forearm stiffness, do not know severity…..
@Grey Mattingly said Padilla would probably be available on Wednesday. this via LA Times-David Hernandez
Izturis or Bartlett @ SS?
ubaldo/fowler on one side, rajai/heath bell/travis wood on the other. which side wins?
Thoughts on trading away mango chutley for the garza strip?
Who do you like better for the remainder of the season?
Matt Kemp or Matt Holliday?
