Having opened the season on a nine-game losing streak, the Marlins started swimming against the current early in 2024 and have apparently grown tired of the effort, swapping almost two full seasons of Luis Arraez for a package of four decent Padres’ prospects: OF Dillon Head, OF Jakob Marsee, 1B Nathan Martorella, and RHP Woo-Suk Go. The Marlins will reportedly also cover Arraez’s salary (down the minimum) for 2024. It’s the first big move by Miami’s new head of baseball operations, Peter Bendix, who comes to South Beach via Tampa and has experienced his fair share of high-wire trades. On the other side of the country, we find AJ Preller doing what he does best, flipping an assortment of imperfect prospects for someone he can play tomorrow.

I love baseball. Probably an unhealthy obsession. As much as I love baseball, I somehow manage to hate so many things MLB does. Lots and lots of things. Having games in Seoul, South Korea, a week before every other team plays? Having the Dodgers/Padres play in two games over there then return to play Spring Training games? Those things I can’t get mad about. If they want to grow the game in Asia, sending the Dodgers is likely the best way. Plus, who doesn’t love Graham Pauley? Koreans, get your Graham Pauley shirts before they’re all sold out!

Corbin Burnes was traded to the Orioles, and, only a few days earlier, Peter Angelos sold the Orioles, saying to the new owners, “Treat this team with the respect she deserves. Every part of her. Down to the staples on this contract. By the way, if you don’t need the staples, I usually take them out and save them so I can use them again down the road. Crazy the amount of people that discard perfectly good staples. I have one staple I used on a court document — someone was suing me for back pay — and I used that one staple, like, sixteen more times.”
