“Salvation is a last-minute business, boy.” — Hunter Renfroe (2-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 10th and 11th homer) looking at my fantasy team that is hurting for offense.

“Women are such durn fools.” — Enrique Hernandez (2-for-3 and his 8th homer, and 2nd homer in as many games). Hot schmotato alert!

“You know, when you’re little, you have more endurance than God is ever to grant you again. Children are man at his strongest. They abide.” — Bobby Dalbec (2-for-4, 2 runs and his 10th homer). He’s the type to get hot in a snap of the fingers, so if you need power, I could see grabbing him immediately.

“A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit. Neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.” — Alex Cora as he fits the Red Sox for buzzers. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

This weekend was the Razzball 17th Annual 4th of July Summer Bash and Midyear Performance Appraisal, where the writers get together to bond over some good-natured peer criticism. Grey opened the bash with his famous sausage eating contest, which Skorish skillfully won before being transported emergently to the port-a-john to conduct his next meeting. Next, Donkey Teeth gave out the awards for “Tightest Pants,” “Biggest Baller,” and the “Maikel Franco Memorial Award for Bravery in Fantasy Baseball Rostership.” That last one was a little awkward, what with Maikel Franco being still alive and playing, but DT kept saying that “Franco is dead to me.” Either way, I was happy to leave with the coveted “Tightest Pants” award, although I will admit it’s the Covid 19 that went to my waist. Can’t wait to show my boy Robbie Ray! But from that meetup and scarring peer criticism, I learned to adjust the ranks, and we’ve got another big rank adjustment today!

Trade rumors are starting to brew as we get deeper into the season, so do yourself a favor and trade your closers on losing clubs right now. Richard Rodriguez? Kendall Graveman? Get whatever you can before the blurbs start to absolutely bury their trade value. You could still get a top-100 bat for one of those guys. With Twitter and mlbtraderumors.com, your league-mates might be too savvy to figure it out, but send those offers out now before you’re holding a ticking time bomb who you are praying ends up on a team that needs a closer. In the world of fantasy, it’s the equivalent of knowing that a corpse is about to turn into a zombie in the background of a scene in any zombie movie. You are the hero in the foreground and in focus. Behind you, a fuzzy, out of focus shape slowly staggers up. Slay that zombie, especially if he’s played by Josh Gad! On to the blurbs!

I decided to take a look at the top players, based on points, over the last 7, 14, 21 and 28 days to see if there were any trends worth taking a closer look at. This is typically a good way to identify players on a hot streak, but it’s also useful in tracking consistency. Let’s see who’s been doing what over the last month. I’ve limited each list to about the top 15 or 16 hitters.

Welcome back and today we have a nice 11 game slate in which to click players we hinge our DFS greatness on and hope we can break even on the day in order to do it all again the next day. Nothing better right? Hope everybody had a great weekend as we are almost halfway through the season already and we should be seeing some exciting young players making their way to the minors. (Hope you all got on the Wander Franco train his 1st game up before his price went up last week.) Plenty of pitchers to choose from today that look interesting so let’s get into our focus pitcher for today and I’m going with Kyle Hendricks ($9,300 ).

Hendricks has a great floor for you to work with, doesn’t break the bank for your lineup and there hardly is any foot traffic on the bases when he is on the mound. You all remember late April early May Hendricks was dreadful for 3 starts during that span and we were all flabbergasted as to what the heck is going on. Well since May 16th (8 starts) Hendricks is back to being the Hendricks of old and has gone at least 6 INN in every start, no more than 3 ER, and has gone 9-1 with a 2.50 ERA. Hendricks faces the Brewers today which he faced twice earlier in the season both starts were quality starts going his usual 6 INN with 6 K’s and 2 ER’s combined in both starts. I don’t see anything changing from the norm we have seen from Hendricks lately. The Brewers are awful against righties with .213 avg and .298 OBP and they are trotting out strikeout artists like Keston Hiura and Tyrone Taylor these days so I wouldn’t be too concerned about the lineup. The Cubs are starting Freddy Peralta today which will get high ownership so you will probably see a 2-1 game here but I like the Cubs’ chances of getting into the Brewers’ bullpen and pulling out a victory here.

*zooms microscope in on Gerrit Cole‘s spin rates on Statcast, accidentally zooms too close and cracks computer screen* Oopsie. Yesterday, Gerrit Cole (5 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 2.66) had his ass handed to him, and not in a good way, like, “Hey, he’s got extra ass now like Vladimir Guerrero Jr.” The funniest or saddest, depending on whether you’re Gerrit Cole, is him giving up all kind of homers, then having his hat and glove checked by the umps. Wish someone would’ve warned me about Gerrit Cole and spin rates being checked in, say, March. WAIT A MINUTE! Someone did! It was March Grey. Damn, March Grey, you smart son of a bee! My Gerrit Cole schmohawk post from March is basically all about the spin rates, and how they’re in danger of coming back to earth. Dot dot dot. Coming back to earth unlike all the home runs the Red Sox hit off Cole yesterday. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in. Here I was thinking the no-hitters were done and over with. And I wasn’t going to have to pick one this week. Alas, that wasn’t the case and the Cubs threw one against the Dodgers. Although it was combined, started by Zach Davies and finished by Craig Kimbrel, the deed was done. So my No-Hitter candidate of the week is Robbie Ray. He has a start at home against the Mariners and I’m still working with the operating theory that all No-Hitters come against them, the Indians, and the Rangers.

Normally I have write-ups with facts, tidbits, and opinions coupled with the pitchers. This week they won’t be there due to a technical error and me losing the entire original post. So just for this week, it will just be rankings with no write-ups. Next week we’ll get back to our regularly scheduled program. Now with the house cleaning out of the way, let’s get to the news.

Some noteworthy news to get to. The Rays’ Tyler Glasnow believes he’ll be back this season which I find hard to believe but time will tell. Also, Mike Soroka re-tore his Achilles Tendon, so expect not to hear anything on him until next year. Also, Dinelson Lamet was pulled from his last start with forearm fatigue. Lastly, there is a top prospect in the Reds organization by the name of Hunter Greene. Greene is skyrocketing through the system and reached AAA last week. He regularly reaches 100 MPH and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him up at some point if his success continues. He could be a league winner for your team so monitor him closely. Now let’s get to the two start pitchers this week!

Sounding akin to a Nordic protein bar that enjoyed suing Napster in the ’90s, there might be more to recent call-up Lars Nootbaar than may seem, sans of course his name. And while I generally don’t cover prospects here at the Razz, Nootbaar carries the unique distinction of never really being a heralded one so curiosity wins the day. Just an eighth-round pick back in 2018, Nootbaar entered this season neither in the Cardinals’ top-30 prospects at Baseball America, MLB.com, nor FanGraphs, he’s held his own so far in this first 16 plate appearances and could be seeing a bit more time as the season progresses. What can we ultimately expect and what is capable are some of the things we’ll explore. And we’re taking the scenic route, whatever that means. Surely it has something to do with your mom…

Around Major League Baseball, there are a host of outstanding players at every position. But the deepest position is unquestionably shortstop. Need some convincing? Eleven of the top 50 players in the Razzball Player Rater rankings or shortstops.

And these are not shortstops in the mold of Ozzie Smith or Omar Vizquel. These shortstops are in the mold of Cal Ripken Jr. and Alex Rodriguez, both the steroid and non-steroid versions. Fernando Tatis Jr. is must-watch television when he steps to the plate. Xander Bogaerts, Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette, and Carlos Correa are also must-watch television every time they are hitting.

I’m not giving anything away when I tell you they are my Tier 1 shortstops right now. As a group, they average 54 runs scored, 17 home runs, 48 RBI, and eight steals while slashing .294-.366-.553. Of the top 50 home run hitters in baseball, eight of them are shortstops. And shortstops account for nine of the top 50 RBI leaders this season. What does this have to do with fantasy rankings? Well, if you don’t have Tatis Jr. or one of the other Tier 1 shortstops, the position is so deep you can make a trade for a player from Tier 2 or 3 and still greatly improve your team.

Without wasting more of your valuable time, let’s see what the ranking order is for the Tier 1 group and the rest of the rankings for shortstops.

We were absolutely crushing our streamers last week until Mike Minor decided to have the worst start of his career on Friday. That nine-run dud was obviously disappointing, but it was the only blemish in an otherwise flawless article. That gives us two great weeks back-to-back, and it feels like we’re back on track! The one concern with this week is the fact that the two-start streamers suck! The pickings are slim, to say the least, but we have a couple of guys we like and some brilliant one-start streamers to ride. With that in mind, let’s kick things off with these lackluster two-start pitchers!

Happy Sunday friends. Why is it happy you ask? Why the eff not I answer. Nah I couldn’t think of anything else to say to start off the article. Anyway, welcome to our DFS MLB tout article, the Sunday version. Today is an interesting day in the world of Major League Baseball. There are 2 of the top 5 fantasy pitchers going today, plus a few good mid-tier guys accompanied by a litany of solid lower-level options. If you are new here I will tell you that I don’t tout the big-time pitchers. Everyone knows they are good and especially today where strikeout records are being broken left and right. Whether or not to roster these studs is more about roster construction. I did talk a little about this a few weeks ago if you want to go back and check. Seems like we got the pleasantries and ancillary stuff out of the way, so let’s do this.
