Aloha, salutations, greetings and WAAAZZZZAAAAAAA?!?!? (remember that?!) to everyone out there in fantasy baseball land! My name is Steve, and I’m taking the reins when it comes to talking about the RazzSlam at you from our esteemed editors, Blair and Donkey Teeth. Why, you might ask? Because they’ve got far more important things to do with their time. I’m like an intern. I’m like Season 2 Greg the Egg: just keeping the lattes flowing.

So why am I here, and why are you reading this? Well… I can’t really answer the second question, which might require some introspection on your part, but as to the first, I’m here to tell you all about RazzSlam 3: Deuces Wild!

You see, the 2022 fantasy baseball season is quickly approaching! And while, as of this writing, it isn’t absolutely clear when the baseball season might start, we here at Razzball believe firmly that one should always walk blindly and unflinchingly into the future, always hoping for the best. Preparing for the worst? That’s someone else’s problem.

In the simplest terms possible, RazzSlam is a fantasy baseball tournament that pits “Pros vs Joes”… and last year’s overall champion was, literally, a Joe, as in a fan, Joe Asher, took down the whole enchilada, beating #2 Paul Sporer of FanGraphs and #3 Nick Mariano of RotoBaller in the final championship bracket. So, indeed, fans and readers: it CAN be done.

Here’s what you need to know about RazzSlam 3:

What: It’s RazzSlam 3: Deuces Wild! Free-to-enter, all are welcome!

Who: Huge names representing the biggest fantasy sites in the industry will compete alongside fans from across these great internets for the RazzSlam trophy. The field for the main event is 75% analysts and 25% fans. There’s a qualifier league for those not included in the main event. You’ll compete against Razzball’s own Grey Albright, Rudy Gamble, and Donkey Teeth, and some of the top names from other fantasy sites. In 2021 we were joined by Andy Behrens, Scott Pianowski, and Dalton Del Don from Yahoo; Eno Sarris and Derek Van Riper from The Athletic; Paul Sporer from FanGraphs; Jeff Erickson from Rotowire; Chris Towers from CBS; Mike Gianella of Baseball Prospectus; Matt Williams of RotoFanatic; Alex Fast and Nick Pollack of PitcherList; and Justin Mason of Fantasy Friends with Benefits; and Yancy Eaton of literally everywhere…Whew! Who will join us in 2022? Why not you?

Where: The NFBC will graciously host the ‘Slam, using their Cutline Championship Format.

Why: Goodness gracious, why not?! 2020 and 2021 were hard years on everyone! Let’s just try to enjoy 2022 with some friendly fantasy baseball tournament play!

When: Slow drafts with a 4-hour per pick clock will begin at 11am ET on Tuesday, February 22. That’s right: 2/22/22! DEUCES WILD!

How: To participate, fill out the form below and click submit. A fan lottery will take place near the draft season. The fan lottery will consist of 80% from people who are premium tools subscribers and 20% from the “Cheap Ass Fans” pool who don’t subscribe to the tools.

Format: This contest will mirror the NFBC Best Ball Cutline Championship Rules, except we’ll feature 12 team leagues rather than 10 team leagues. Here is everything you need to know about the 2022 RazzSlam Rules and Format.

Congratulations to Joe Asher! What an experience this would be to learn from the best first hand, but then to win it. I would be curious to see his draft results and offseason adds.

In my 14 team dynasty I was just offered Olson and Nick Gordon for my A.Vaughn and Nate Lowe. Obviously, I’m not interested in Gordon and would probably need an OF considering the league bats 5 OF. Mine are currently S.Marte, Casthellanos, Luis Robert, Schwarber, Vaughn, and Blackmon on the bench. So my OF isn’t great, but what Abreu as my 1B, adding Olson would be insurance for the future.

Am I dumb for not jumping at this? Vaughn going to be a top 20 player someday? Nate Lowe’s ceiling just 25 HR?

I appreciate the help!

Thank you so much for this! Very fun and interesting to read through it. Looks like the strategy was to go save, consistent hitters in most of the first 10 rounds, and then go upside later. Great value on some sleepers in the later rounds.

How did you manage to get points for saves? Last year was a nightmare for sagnof and vulturing saves.

Any key FA adds you can remember helping you as well?

oh ok that makes sense! I was looking at the Razzslam link you provided and noticed saves were worth 8 points. I’m not as familiar with points based leagues as I’m strictly a roto guy!

Carlos Rodon was my big main FAAB addition in the first early April FA period and he was obviously a big get for a team that kind of punted pitching in this format. Like Steve mentioned, you don’t necessarily need saves but guys who could get multiple saves in a week racked up points pretty quickly. In the June FAAB period I added lower end contributors that still had some difference making weeks like Mike Zunino, Odubel Herrera, Chris Flexen, Tyler Anderson, and Lou Trivino. The best-ball format helped most of these guys since they’re streaky and its harder to pin-point when they would actually produce if you had to set a weekly lineup.

Was just commenting at bottom of page and thinking, I hope Joe checks in! And there you are. Dood you were an absolute beast last year. Glad to see you take the crown. I finished 4th in our league and was watching you tear it up all season. Just looked like you could do no wrong.

Nux,

Thanks for the kind words and it was definitely fun playing in a league with you, the other razzballers (RotoWan Mike Alexander), and other industry pros (Nando DiFino). Hoping to prove in 2022 that last season wasn’t beginners luck as it was my first time playing in the RazzSlam and first full season playing in the RCL’s (I qualified in the first place by finishing top 10 overall in the shortened 2020 season). Good luck this upcoming season, hope we cross paths again!

I really appreciate the feedback Steve. That’s a great point about Olson landing in a different park.

Steve,

Have you played in the NFBC points Diamond Challenge contest?

I was thinking of playing and was wondering if a stars and scrub strategy on constructing your roster is the way to go? Not possible to roster all the guys you want within the constraints of the virtual budget. I guess they have to do that as everyone would have mostly the same players.

Any insight from you or razzballers would be greatly appreciated.

Danggg, congrats Joe! I was in the same league/draft for the Razzslam last year as Joe’s Gunk Squad. He was on fire all year, but I didn’t realize he ended up winning. It looks like I finished #32 in the consolation bracket but had a lot of fun.

If you’re reading this and contemplating whether or not to throw your name into the pot, I urge you to do it. One of my fav leagues to play in for the last two years.

Keep up the great work with this Steve. Looking forward to all your writeups again for 2022

Zunino, BCrawford, TO’neill, Wainwright, Logan Webb, Rodon, Cron… just an incredible list of random 2021 studs on the Gunk Squad roster. What a year Joe!

Look forward to another RazzSlam. Love the fresh blood taking over. And although I’ll miss Me some Donkey I look forward to watching it evolve under your leadership.

I’m going to the RAZZBOWL 2022! Finished as the Wild Card Bracket Champion in the Qualifier Contest. Now bring on the RazzSlam (maybe 3rd time will be the charm?)! Will I get any confirmation on the Razzbowl finish from you, Steve, or Rudy?
